From the Loewe basket bag to Celine's oval sunglasses, there are just some luxury cult items that stylish people will always choose to invest in, and the dress category is definitely not short of options. For the past few years, however, I've noticed that elegant dressers have consistently turned to one particular style as a timeless and sophisticated throw-on for summer—Staud's Wells dress. And with dress season officially here, I've finally been influenced to invest in one myself.

Staud's Wells dress is designed with a corset-style bodice and a midi-length a-line silhouette, creating a flattering fit that will suit all body types. This makes the timeless yet comfortable dress the perfect throw-on solution on those days when you don't know what to wear. The slightly formal shape of the dress also means you can easily take the style from day to night with a simple change of footwear and accessories. I'd personally opt for a pair of suede sandals and a raffia tote in the day, and swap these out for a pair of heeled flip-flops and a statement clutch for evenings.

Starting at £255, this is by no means a cheap dress, but its undeniable quality and styling versatility make it one worth considering investing in. Not to mention the natural fibres will make for a much more durable item that will have a lifespan that extends longer than cheaper synthetic materials. Made up of 95% cotton and 5% spandex for some extra stretch, this lightweight and breathable dress is ideal for the warmer weather but can equally be layered under a relaxed blazer or cashmere cardigan when autumn comes around.

Early last year, Kendall Jenner did her part to make the Staud Tommy Bag an It bag, when she carried the zebra version on repeat occasions. A year later, she's proving that the bag has staying power, as she just wore a newer colorful iteration of the bag out and about in New York. The Tommy Bag is a '90s-style baguette shoulder bag covered in beads. This season, the offerings include animal prints, pastel gingham styles, geometrics patterns, and in Jenner's case, a colourful psychedelic print called Millefiore. 

No matter which you choose, each one of the bags is beautiful in person, and the style is roomy enough to hold all of your essentials and more. It's also a great piece to add some excitement to your wardrobe if you tend to wear a lot of basics and neutrals (which is perfectly fine, of course). And around the £200 mark, it's far cheaper than most designer It bags, which can set you back £2k or more.

I regret to inform you that autumn's It sneakers are already sold out, but I still thought you should know about them because Katie Holmes wore them, which is noteworthy for obvious reasons. And who knows, maybe they'll restock, or maybe you'll want to shop for a similar pair. The trainers in question are from Staud's second collaboration with New Balance, which is an epic marrying of two It brands which, of course, produced a pair of It sneakers.

For the collaboration, Staud updated New Balance's classic 327 sneakers with a bold burgundy N and a gum sole. The resulting shoes are in perfect step with the season's retro-sneaker trend and would look exceedingly cool with a variety of autumn outfits (like Holmes' coat and jeans). I ordered a pair as soon as they were released a couple of weeks ago, and I noticed that they were pretty much wiped out on every site that sells them (Shopbop, Net-a-Porter, and Farfetch included) the day they were released.

We've all heard the phrase "all dressed up and nowhere to go," but this year the term has been given entirely new meaning. With restrictions on social gatherings and forced closures of pubs, bars and restaurants, we all literally have nowhere to go, though that certainly hasn't stopped our favourite influencers and It girls from continuing to dress up. Between shimmering minidresses and floral embellished midis, influencers worldwide are persisting with putting on their finest even if it is simply to bake a cake, work from home or lounge on the couch.

A few weeks back, Who What Wear UK introduced Dress-Up Fridays, an initiative which encourages us all to put on something extra special to celebrate the conclusion of the week (and ensure we're getting out of our activewear at least once every seven days). And with influencers constantly sharing images of themselves at home in bright, beautiful dresses, it couldn't be easier to find inspiration to put on you Friday best.

Between Emili Sindlev in Ganni, Monikh in Rixo and Nnenna Echem in Who What Wear Collection, you don't have to look very far to track down a gorgeous dress. So without further ado, here are 10 outfits I want to copy this week for dress-up Fridays, even if I am just sitting in my living room.

It's really started to get a little frost-bitten out there. Yes, it's December and it's always this chilly, but I still never quite seem to be ready for it. Those of you that, unlike me, are prepared, seem to be beating the cold weather by swaddling yourselves in a shearling, borg or teddy-bear coats, and now I'm spotting the fuzzy texture crossing over to the bag department en masse. This winter, shearling bags are everywhere. 

It's no wonder that one of the snuggest and warmest fabrics around is becoming a cult favourite with the fashion crowd. We've been granted our fair share of "duvet" dressing over the years with quilted coats, skirts and jackets but this takes it to a whole new level.

The dynamic duo Proenza Schouler sent their models down the runway in tailoring and draping - punctuated with shearling pouch bags, artfully folded over and tucked under the model's arm. This is the perfect example of the versatility of this fabric and how darn good it looks with black leather. 

I love the evolution of this trend and how brands have utilised it in such varied ways. You have multiple hues from the ever-colourful Kurt Geiger, fluid shapes from Nanushka and artfully trimmed totes from Gucci and UGG x Telfar. Now while I'm on the topic of the latter, the two have come together to bring the shearling and suede experience of one to combine with the handbag genius of the other. They have created a scale of sizes, all adorning a shearling trimming to the logo and edges. 

Other cult brands who can boast that this isn't their first rodeo in the teddy/shearling department include Stand and Staud, so you won't be surprised to see them in the running for some of the best offerings out there right now. The much-loved DeMellier Tokyo bag is also now available in a delightful shearling finish.

One more thing I love about the shearling texture (I know, I'm a little obsessed with it but I'm nearly done, I promise) is that you can enjoy the borg-like bobbly texture or a fluffier surface like that of the Hereu bag which is just so, so soft.

Until last season, it felt as though street style had reached its maximum, nothing could top it. Every look was more outrageous than the next, and copying street style outfits felt nearly as approachable as wearing haute couture runway pieces to the office. But then something happened last London Fashion Week: Everyone wore beige. Alexa Chung stepped out in a beige co-ord and flat sandals, and rest of the fashion set followed suit (pardon the pun). Practicality in its chicest form replaced the wild looks we were becoming accustomed to seeing. This doesn't mean that street style trends became boring; they just feel more authentic.

For autumn 2019, it feels like a one-stop-shop kind of outfit is the major takeaway. Simplicity and calm is the trendsetters' response to the chaos in the world. This London Fashion Week, sustainability took centre place (the BFC show space has curated a Positive Fashion Designer Exhibition featuring sustainable innovators), and designers and street style stars alike are responding to this well.

The showgoers, celebrities, influencers and trendsetters are shifting away from hyped-up new pieces and are moving toward more long-lasting favourites. As was the case in New York, Bottega Veneta pieces are everywhere, but even these cult pieces are forever buys. Other key items of season's past have been reappearing (hi, Shrimps bag!), while the newer trends we're seeing are more along the lines of styling tricks to keep your existing wardrobe feeling fly.

BROWN LEATHER

Whether it's vegan, vintage or genuine, we keep seeing brown leather all over London this week. Net-a-Porter's Elizabeth von der Goltz's head-to-toe Nanushka and Stella McCartney mix is so chic. 

Who What Wear U.S. Managing Editor Kristen Marie Nichols gives us a minimalist take on brown leather, pairing her kitten heels with matching flared trousers and a simple white button-down. 

Emili Sindlev proves that this trend works for maximalists too. She pairs her vintage-style jacket with a Chanel bag, a printed dress and knee-high boots for a fresh take on the trend. 

For an autumnal take, Deborah Reyner Sebag mixes her vintage-style leather skirt with a grey cable-knit T-shirt and Bottega Veneta heels. Cosy and classic? Love.

PATCHWORK

We're seeing lots of patchwork pieces both on the streets and the runways. As designers continue to experiment with upcycling and preventing waste, we expect to see a lot more of it. Jessie Bush's Andersson Bell knit jumper is a major autumn mood. 

This Topshop dress is an instant cult favourite already. We love how this showgoer layers a puff-sleeved tee under it as an early autumn styling trick.

Patchwork denim is an old-school classic. Matching this cropped jacket with oversized jeans is the trend-driven styling, but this would also work with white denim and a T-shirt.

You can definitely find many patchwork pieces (and Naomi Shimada's cowboy boots) in the vintage shops off of Brick Lane or Portobello Market if it's a trend you want to jump on first. 

ROOTED AND BOOTED

Like flat shoes, glove-like slip-on biker boots have been spotted everywhere lately. Jessie Bush has been wearing her Pradas with dresses and miniskirts all week, proving their durability and high comfort level. 

British Vogue's Donna Wallace wears a knee-high Alexander McQueen pair for a more trend-driven look. 

The team from Browns Fashion shows us how versatile these boots can be by wearing them with leather trousers and a floaty black dress. 

BIG WHITE DRESSES

Whether it's Simone Rocha or Zara, these timeless white puffy dresses are wildly popular. They're super flattering and comfortable, so it's no wonder, really.

Wearing a puffy white dress with chunky flat boots balances out the volume up top. We love this Rejina Pyo number with a more fitted waist. 

In true Scandi-inspired style, why not pair a puffy white dress with trainers? Seeing how versatile these frocks can be, we're not expecting this trend to end any time soon. 

BAGS GONE ROUGE

Burnt red hues have been the mega-trend for accessories this season. As the warmer version of navy, it's a timeless way to add a jolt of colour to your looks.

Mansur Gavriel's vegetable-tanned pleated leather bucket bag is an Instagram star in its own right. It's like carrying a little piece of art on your arm.

This shade—autumn's answer to terra-cotta—pairs well with other earthy tones like olive and taupe, both of which have also been spotted across London Fashion Week.

This colour fits in well with every kind of personal style, from minimalism to retro chic. We love how this showgoer pairs her burnt red bucket bag with brown platforms and a prairie dress. 

UTILITY IS KEY

Like flat boots, utility is the other practical and chic trend that's been spotted all over this week. We love the simplicity of Chrissy Rutherford's white Frankie Shop jumpsuit.

Having missed out on useful pockets for decades, womenswear designers are making up for lost time with oversized pockets on jumpsuits, jackets and cargo trousers. 

The always-chic Lisa Aiken balances out longline workwear shorts with a sheer top and strappy leopard-print heels.

GATHERED SLEEVES

Statement sleeves have been trending for years now, and each season, there's a new version to fall for. Like the sleeves on the puff dresses, the gathered-sleeved trend is a bit longer on the arm, offering an autumn option. 

Florrie Thomas frames her blue silk dress with light accessories like her Stella McCartney bag, cream thong shoes and white pearls. 

Monica de La Villardière, ever the minimalist with a twist, pairs her gathered-sleeved top by Ports 1961 with Vince shorts and a zebra-print Anya Hindmarch bag.

Marie Claire's Pénélope Goldstone's dreamy Staud dress does all the work for this outfit. We love how she uses simple accessories—like her Zara headband—to complete the look.

Infiltrating the world of It bags is no small feat, especially when you're going up against arm candy heavyweights deeply rooted in fashion history (think the likes of Chanel, Gucci and Chloé). Which is precisely what makes the accomplishments of this particular brand all the more impressive. It may have been born 2015, but 2018 has certainly served as Los Angeles–based cool label Staud's breakout year. Looking through my wardrobe recently, I realised the vast majority of pieces I love and wear on a daily basis are made up of my favourite contemporary brands. Of course, I still save up to buy those key designer purchases, but they’re not the items I rely on day in and day out.

Contemporary brands, on the other hand, are the bread and butter of my daily wardrobe. They’re the pieces I pick out first thing every morning, no matter what season or city I’m in. Even during fashion month, when I’m travelling I often wear more statement, fashion-forward pieces, and I actually prefer to wear contemporary brands because they’re more under the radar. I love wearing pieces that feel like hidden gems.

Essentially, contemporary brands aren’t your big-ticket buys—they’re your stealth purchases, the ones people don’t necessarily know where you got them. They’re the ones that form your everyday functional wardrobe and are the answer to a perfect shopping fix.

We all know keeping it cool in winter can be pretty tricky. And who isn’t super excited about wearing winter coat coats, knits, and boots when the first days of autumn start to show their wonderful colours? (Even if we do get tired of wearing the same pieces over and over again while struggling with winter-burdened, ghostly skin.)

But rest assured, I’m here to help you solve that problem. Ahead, I’m laying out three key rules to follow if you want to tap into French style. I’ll also tell you which popular pieces you’ll never see Parisians wearing in the winter, as well as the staples everyone needs to own. Let’s dive into winter styling à la Française!

Rule number one: Don't give in to too comfortable pieces

I know—Uggs are comfortable. But would Catherine Deneuve wear Uggs? I’m guessing you already know the answer. When it’s been cold for months and the days stay short, it can be tempting to leave the house in a puffer coat and winter beanie. But if you want to follow the French rules of winter styling, it’s best to leave these pieces at home. On a more serious note: I find that for me, placing style over comfort motivates me because it makes me feel good about myself.

I know it sounds weird, but I believe the key to the cool French-girl vibe is to neither overdress nor underdress. Always ask yourself: What would Catherine Deneuve wear? As a side note, this tip only works for those who live in the city. I wouldn’t recommend wearing heels in the countryside. I’m not that cruel.

Rule number two: Try not to accumulate winter accessories 

This is much easier said than done. While it’s fun and easy to go accessory-free in the summer (since you’re wearing fewer pieces of clothing), over-accessorizing in winter can make you look like a “Sapin de Noël”, aka a Christmas tree. (Yes, it’s a saying.)

I rarely come across women wearing the full winter package in the streets of Paris (oversize beanies, knitted gloves, oversize scarves, furry boots). It’s just too much. Wear leather gloves (if it’s really very cold) with a turtleneck layered under a men’s coat to make you appear lighter and more French.

Rule number three: Chose the perfect essentials and be playful with them

Sometimes it’s cool to be playful and wear your French basics (like a men’s coat, oversize knit, or the perfect jeans) with some fun items. To me, wintertime is the perfect season to wear glitter, velvet and furry numbers. Mix these with your everyday essentials. After all, it is party season.

Fluffy Details

Fluffy details are my absolute go-to’s for party season. Pair them with a fun pouch and some cute heels (preferably fluffy as well).

Velvet

Velvet can look so chic if paired with something super simple. It’s also perfect for going out.

Fur Coat

I love furry, vintage-looking coats. You see so many of them wandering the streets of Paris. They pair perfectly with a simple outfit. Wear one with a T-shirt, jeans and boots.

Boots

One can only call herself French if she owns at least one pair of super-cool boots.

Jewelry

And of course, pair all your outfits with some cool jewelry.

Staud is one of those under-the-radar brands that slowly seeps into fashion girls’ consciousness one Instagram at a time. I first became aware of the line when I scrolled past a picture of Alexa Chung sporting the brand’s now-staple Bissett bag, double-tapped and immediately added it to my cart. The brand also caught the eye of Net-a-Porter’s senior buyer, Lisa Aiken, through social media. “Ever since, I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to do something special,” says Aiken. Just what is that something special? An exclusive capsule collection that launched with Net-a-Porter on May 29, marking the first time the line will be shoppable via a multi-brand retailer and available to order in the UK. 

When I broke the news in the L.A. office, all the editors collectively grinned. Indeed, the announcement marks an exciting time for Staud and for fans of the brand alike (myself included). The line is a little over a year old and already has cult status among in-the-know women. Breaking onto the larger shopping scene seems like an intuitive next step. Staud’s George Augusto confirms: “It was always our dream to launch on Net-a-Porter.” Business partner, Sarah Staudinger adds, “It’s the perfect segue into the wholesale market.”
