I'm Anti-Trend, But These New-Season Items Work With My Winter Capsule Wardrobe

As 2024 (dare I say it) almost draws to a close, I've entered the reflection phase (albeit a bit more prematurely but I can't help myself when Christmas is on the horizon!) One thing is for certain this season, I'm inspired. You may have deduced that winter isn't typically my favourite season, but since moving to Paris, I've witnessed winter style through a fresh lens when it was previously a dreaded season for fashion.

With that said, this year I'm exploring the opportunity to experiment. As someone who observes trends meticulously and ponders extensively (truly, sometimes for a year but more on that later) about worthwhile pieces to invest in, I pay attention to the small details. This winter's trends have not disappointed on that front. To my delight, subtlety has been embraced by aspirational designers and followed onto the high street. The whipstich is back gracing coats, as are scarf features and colour pallets are rich and classic. Strathberry

Iona Woven Pure Wool Cape

The scarf jacket is the ultimate anti-trend piece. Spearheaded by Totême last year, it's proven itself to be a trend-defying piece, as it's still a highly coveted (not to mention functional) style a year on. Last year, scarf coat offerings were few and far between but this winter there are many iterations including Strathberry's, coming in at much less than the designer price point. This piece comprises 100% wool which trumps Totême fabrication!

Belted Double-Faced Wool Coat

This is perhaps one of my favourite coats thats ever graced the high street (huge statement, I know). After being on the hunt for a mid-priced wool rich and polyester free coat last winter, I stumbled across the camel version of this exact coat. It's a clean silhouette sans front facing pockets, which lends it a streamlined and polished look. This year COS have released this grey hue and a black version. Size down for a true to fit shape as it features drop shoulders and a generous drape.

The bouclé texture offers something unique as most outerwear features a flat profile.

I have very specific requirements for boots this year. Knee-high, taught and heeled (though comfortable for everyday wear) this pair by Clarks fits the bill. I have it on good authority that they're also extremely comfortable.

There's one swimsuit trend that has really gained momentum so far in 2018 —belted retro one-pieces. Belted bikinis are a classic Bond girl move, as both Halle Berry and Ursula Andress wore belts around their bikini briefs, but this year it has moved into swimsuits. "This season, swimwear is more elevated than ever, with designers referencing the '70s, '80s and '90s," says founder of Beach Flamingo and swimsuit expert Lily Russo. "Belted leotard shapes and go-faster stripes are your reference points for this trend. These sporty suits have been reworked in of-the-moment primary hues and rainbow palettes to make them one of the most-flattering and eye-catching trends of the summer. Nestled within an ultra-glam corner of Palm Springs, Poppy Delevingne has just launched her latest collaborative collection with swimwear label Solid & Striped, hosting a chic party with American e-commerce giant Shopbop.com. Well, where better to showcase the picnic-blanket ginghams and blue-and-white colour palette of the new drop than in the glorious Californian sunshine?

Anyone acquainted with Poppy's Instagram account will know just how much of a jet-set glamazon she is. From private helicopter jaunts to a wedding marathon that spanned the globe, she is no stranger to packing up a suitcase for any given location—and looking mighty good when she gets there. As we type, she's already moved on from the West Coast down to Mexico…

So with the Bank Holiday weekend in sight, and perhaps an inkling to book a summer vacation, we thought it high time to catch up with the model and fashion oracle to get her top tips for travelling in style. WHO WHAT WEAR UK: Are you a capsule packer when it comes to your holiday wardrobe?

POPPY DELEVINGNE: I’m quite a chaotic packer, and I never usually think too much about it. I choose my favourite things, a mixture of high street and designer, then enjoy playing dress up when I get there.

WWW UK: Do you have a favourite suitcase?

PD: Can I have two? Mulberry and Globe-Trotter. I love to mix 'n' match.

WWW UK: What do you think is the vital thing about finding the right swimsuit?

PD: For me, it's all about the fit. I need a swimsuit that I can do cartwheels in!

WWW UK: How would you describe the differences between your holiday and regular wardrobes?

PD: On holiday, I never want anything too fussy. It's all about throwing something on and feeling sensational. The eyelet hooded robe from my collection with Solid & Striped does exactly this. When I'm working and going from city to city, I opt for pieces with more structure—I so appreciate beautiful tailoring nowadays.

WWW UK: What do you take on the plane as your survival kit?

PD: As soon as I get on the plane, no matter where I'm headed, I head straight to the bathroom and give myself a little mini-facial. I'll spend 10 minutes in there adding all the lotions and potions until I'm a slippery seal, and then I'll sit down and get to my e-mails. Sisley does an amazing hydration mask, and MV Organic does a beautiful rose water mist.

WWW UK: Do you have a place in the world wear you always feel happiest? And if so, what do you wear there?

PD: The English countryside with my husband, where I tend to wear his clothes or spend my entire time in the bath. I'm all about getting cozy.

WWW UK: Are there style no-nos that you embrace on holiday?

PD: For me, the beachier the hair, the better. I welcome beach hair with open arms on holiday. Au naturel is key.
