White sneakers paired with a sundress of sorts had been *the* Copenhagen-coded dress outfit to wear for some time, but 2026 calls for something different, and while out for the night in NYC, Charlotte Lawrence just gave us what could be the new dress-and-trainer look of today.

Okay, I'll admit it: until recently, I didn't own many pairs of trainers. Style Notes: It's a big year to be a Cecilie Bahnsen fan. While the source material asks what makes a human, the hybrid shoe trend asks what makes a trainer? Is it sufficient enough to have a gum sole and a laced element? Or, does there need to be something deeper beneath the surface? Either way, these mutant silhouettes continue to dominate, from trainer-loafer hybrids by New Balance to the sneakerinas endorsed by the likes of Louis Vuitton and Vans.

Shopping experts also add that these unconventional hybrids also act as a gateway for new consumers to engage with trainers. "Whilst the popularity of sneakers as a fashion shoe has diminished over the last few seasons, with the increasing prevalence of alternative flats ie, ballet flats, Mary-Janes and loafers, they are still often the entry price point item into a luxury brand and thus a younger customer's first interaction with it," adds Chartrand.

Style Notes: Trainers will never deviate from their functional usages, so it's only fitting that designers mine the environment and exercises that they shine. So far, we've seen asphalt circuits serve as a source of inspiration through the form of the F1-inspired Puma Speedcat, bars and beams with Miu Miu's Gymnasium sneakers and the track and field with Maison Margiela's sprinter sneaker.

"Given the wider nostalgic revival seen in fashion, retro silhouettes continue to dominate; however, we have seen a shift towards both ballerina styles and sportier, technical options tapping into trekking, basketball and boxing," Chartrand adds. "Both Dries Van Noten’s best-selling sneaker and Chloe’s Kick, for example, took a ballet turn for Spring/Summer 2026, with Gucci’s Shift style, Prada’s Collapse sneaker and Miu Miu's Gymnasium trainer innovating in this space too. Michael Rider’s Celine debut featured boxing high-tops and more literal sport elements were also seen in Margiela’s Sprinter, Puma’s Speedcat, Balenciaga’s City and Nike’s Astrograbber styles," she continues.

So, what's next? As someone who grew up playing the sport, the popularity of Asics transports me right back to the days of Saturday morning netball, so I can only imagine this sport becoming a repository. (Seriously, how chic would a bib-esque top by JW Anderson be?) I can also see more preppy pastimes like horse riding and polo come to the forefront. (Jilly Cooper would certainly approve.) From sleek handbags to high-quality outerwear, there are particular instances where exceptional craftspersonship makes splurging that bit of extra cash worthwhile. Trainers, however, don't typically fall under this umbrella for me. In fact, the high street currently has so many options that higher-priced iterations rarely catch my attention.

However, when I want a pair that is just that little bit more trend-led, that will also stand the test of time in my wardrobe, there are a few slightly more expensive trainer brands that I turn to. These brands sit at a (sometimes significantly) higher price point than their high-street counterparts, but due to their cult status as well as their undeniably fashion-forward designs, I think they're well worth the cost.

From ultra-luxury cult brands to slightly more affordable favourites, with even a few buzzy collabs in the mix, I’ve rounded up the seven fashionable trainer brands to invest in this season and beyond.

Style Notes: I had to start this round-up with the brand that brought us arguably the most popular trainer style of 2025 so far: Puma. It’s my job to spot emerging cult-buys the moment they land, and this afternoon, my radar lit up when Jacquemus and Nike’s hotly anticipated Moon Shoes finally dropped on the Jacquemus site.

Marking the fourth footwear collaboration between the two powerhouses, the trainer reimagines the original Moon Shoe silhouette through a Jacquemus lens, nodding to the design’s racing origins whilst incorporating a ballet-inspired refinement.
