I personally haven’t owned one since sadly parting ways with the cult-favourite leopard-print midi skirt from Réalisation Par back in the late 2010s. A lot of things have changed since then, from the quality of fabrics to the style’s availability on the market, so I threw down the gauntlet and took to changing room after changing room in an attempt to weigh up which satin skirts were actually worth the investment. 1. Aligne Ari Lace Satin Slip Skirt

Style Notes: After spotting Katie Holmes wearing the cognac-coloured version of this set whilst out in New York a few weeks ago, I knew my quest for the best satin skirt would have to start here. Honestly, I think it could’ve also ended here, too, as this piece is an incredible contender. The slip style features a juxtaposing trim that Aligne creative director Ginny Seymour tells me arose from her interest in contrasts.

“I wanted the softness and fluidity of satin but framed it with something a little more unexpected, which is where the placement lace came in,” she explains. “The references ranged from ’90s slip silhouettes to vintage lingerie trims. There were Parisian elements for sure, but also that slightly undone London sensibility we’re known for at Aligne.” I simply adore wearing it as a set, as it feels like a subtle homage to the underwear as outerwear trend. (Albeit at a more appropriate level.)

Two major caveats, however. It fits true to size but does run slightly longer, so petite women make note! (I’m 5”5’ and found myself wishing it was an inch or two shorter.) It also crinkles ridiculously easily. Now, this comes down to the very nature of satin as a fabric, but I did find that after only a few hours of sitting, it was creased all through the front. This might not be an issue for some, but as someone who despises wearing linen for this precise reason, you might be deterred from investing in something you’ll have to regularly iron.

3. Reformation Carolina Skirt

Style Notes: Sweet, Carolina. After noticing this Reformation skirt all over my feed, I knew I’d immediately be featuring the style in my edit. Not just because of the style’s virality and appeal, but because of how premium it looks both in the brand’s e-commerce shots and on my FYP. This style is made from 100% silk, so it is already far superior in quality to other pieces I tried on. But, because of the delicate material, it did feel quite lightweight in comparison to other heavy-duty and durable pieces. This is a style that can see you through the year with some clever styling, like pairing it with a chunky jumper, pendant necklace and knee-high boots as Reformation has done below. Still, I do think it’s considerably more suited to balmy climates. The fabric was incredibly soft on my skin, and I’m already picturing wearing it come spring in one of the brand’s trendier and seasonal shades.

4. Mango Satin Lace Skirt

Style Notes: Whenever I’m in need of good-quality basics at a more affordable price point, Mango is typically the first place I’ll turn. Whilst this style does lack the delicate draping and glossy sheen that more expensive styles boast, it truly does the job and does it well, making it a reliable piece of clothing that will only decrease in cost per wear. It’s an unfussy and straightforward style that will still make you appear incredibly classy, so if you’re looking to expand your wardrobe for 2026 and beyond, I’d make a case for this style to be thrown in the mix. My one note is, again, the length. I find knee-length skirts hard to style with certain shoes, so I do think this is a piece that would benefit from being worn with a heel. Be it a soft block heel on a ballet pump or a sharper razor-point style on a boot, anything slightly flat will, unfortunately, make your legs look slightly truncated.

5. DISSH Charli Satin Maxi Skirt

Style Notes: As a London-based fashion writer who was born in Sydney, I take great pride when brands that were founded on home soil make a name for themselves on the international stage. DISSH is one such label. Located on Queensland’s tranquil coastline, DISSH is revered for their relaxed cuts and refined silhouettes, which inject a sense of casual lightness into this tough sartorial landscape. These are pieces that are true complement earners, and the way this style skims your body will have you inundated with them. A true mid-rise, this style sweeps the floor but fits like a true mermaid silhouette in the sense that it contours to your limbs before flaring out slightly close to the hem. Style Notes: High-street titan Zara is like a treasure trove, with pieces that can suit any need, budget or concern. Walking into the brand’s Oxford Street store, I was overwhelmed by just how many satin skirts were available. From asymmetrical shapes to floor grazers, there were truly too many to pick from. But any concern I had about spending hours in a changing room whittling down the best styles was immediately quelled when I saw this piece hanging on the rack. Style Notes: Whilst I had never actually tried on Whistles previously, I was impressed by the selection in store and the quality of the brand. What to Look for When Shopping the Best Satin Skirts?

When it comes to shopping for the best satin skirts, the most important factor to consider is fabric. For the uninitiated, satin isn't actually a specific material, but a kind of weave that creates a glossy effect with high shine on one side and a matte finish on the other. Whilst silk is the most common natural fibre to be used to make satin skirts, you'll often see synthetics like polyester and nylon in the mix, too.

In addition, Seymour notes that there are specific design elements to contemplate, too. "You want a satin with enough weight to drape beautifully rather than cling," she notes. 1: I WON’T SHUT UP ABOUT: CARTIER'S LOVE COLLECTION

I have a milestone birthday coming up at the end of the year, and I am very clear about what I’d like, even if I have to self-gift in order to receive it: Cartier’s Love collection. This is a classic range, first introduced in 1969 with its instantly recognisable signature screw motif and fixtures, is worn by literally every editor, stylist and insider—in fact, we wrote all about the history of the Love collection here. But what’s even more exciting about it right now is that there are totally new additions to the Love family. Introducing Unlimited: featuring a subtly chic ridged effect, the Unlimited bracelets are particularly ingenious as they snake and move unlike the original bangles. Not only that, they can also be fastened together to create longer, wrap-around bracelets. You can mix finishes like white gold with yellow, for example, or stay true to one metal. My preference? I like to combine all yellow-gold pieces with different textures to feel considered but not overly perfect—like a brushed metal alongside a shiny or ridged piece. Family members—pay attention!

2: UNDER THE RADAR: LEOPARD PRINT COATS

I had a black coat once, and it bored the hell out of me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been seeking out alternatives that bring a little joy to the darkest months. First, my interest manifested in thrift and vintage stores, hunting down interesting secondhand, faux-fur trimmed leather coats, mad shearling things or pink shangtung silk opera coats—nothing remotely understated. These days, I’ve managed to find an option that provides all of the entrance-making drama but actually works effortlessly with plenty of outfits from casual to dressed up: leopard print. The gateway coat was Rixo’s Milly, a style I’ve worn on repeat since the first autumn it was released. The shape works with plenty of silhouettes and formulas underneath (from silky slips through to jeans-and-jumpers) and the fabric ages nicely. I’ve recently seen new versions coming through from Prada and Queens of Archive, and frankly, if I get lots of wear out of something, I’m never averse to buying multiples that offer a little something different. Top tip: always look out for a leopard print that feels more random and less like a repeat, it’ll make it look more premium.

3: ASK HANNAH ANYTHING (about style)

“Bag ideas to buy secondhand?”

Hannah says, Okay, reader, I love you for asking this! So long as you’re using a reputable source with authentication, it’s always a fantastic idea to consider buying a designer handbag secondhand. For two reasons: because It styles often come around again (so if you hit that trend curve early or late, you’ll be very pleased with yourself for picking up a popular item at a lesser price—I managed to do this with a gold Fendi Baguette!) and it can also be a way to commit on a smaller scale to such a big purchase. If you’re looking for throwbacks that are current again, search for: Fendi’s original Spy styles, anything Prada (literally all of their handbag designs stand the test of time), ‘00s styles like Mulberry’s Roxanne or Chloé’s Paddington and the Balenciaga City. Sorry to the circle skirts that dominated over the summer months, but I've been studying the runways and scanning the celebrity style scene, and it’s clear that the most fashion-forward have reached a consensus: pencil skirts are taking over as the most significant shape of the season.

Whilst they had an undeniable moment at the autumn/winter 2025 shows in February—not to mention the spring/summer 2026 runways that just wrapped—runway trends don't necessarily guarantee success amongst the street-style set. Pencil skirts, however, have got the official seal of approval, and interestingly, every excellent look I'm seeing uses a very specific footwear formula.

Catching my eye as she made her way to the Chanel front row for Matthieu Blazy's debut, Kendall Jenner wore a hip-slung pencil skirt that skimmed the knees, teamed with two-tone pumps featuring a razor-sharp pointed toe; a skirt and combination that elongated her frame whilst adding elegance in ways a ballet flat could never match. A chic pairing for a number of reasons, the pointed toe elongates the leg whilst both pieces riff off each other's inherent poise to reinforce a supremely chic silhouette.

Also spotted styling the elegant combination, model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was out this week in a leather iteration of the trending skirt silhouette, paired with a luxuriously fluffy coat and black pointed-toe heels. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez wore a seafoam-green ensemble with a black wide-brim hat and matching pointed-toe heels, adding height to her frame and elegance to her outfit.

1: I WON’T SHUT UP ABOUT: STRETCHY BOOTS

If you’ve been reading this newsletter from the start, you’ll know about my personal struggle with knee-high boots. I’ve always had small feet but thick calves, and this ratio means that knee-highs have never been my friend. I discovered one leather, zip-up pair that works (shout-out again to Realm), but otherwise, there’s a particular style I always go back to: stretchy suede-and-leather pull-on boots. The offering now is far chicer than when this kind of hybrid leather fabric was first introduced, and my collection includes styles from brands such as Whistles, Me+Em and Charles & Keith, all the way up to Prada, L’Autre Chose (a now-defunct French shoe label, which was so good) and Dora Teymur. If there’s a stretchy, chic knee-high boot out there, I will find it. I like that they provide a sleek finish for many outfits, working well with midi skirts and even under trousers.

2: UNDER THE RADAR: SKIRTS ‘N’ SHIRTS

Shh! Don’t tell my dresses, but right now, I only want to wear one specific outfit formula: skirts with shirts. There’s something grown-up and polished about wearing separates, and I feel you can add a little more personality to an outfit you actually have to assemble. This combo is ideal for the in-between weather days of early autumn, where you can pair a woollen skirt with sandals, for example, or a flippy summer skirt with some cool knee-high boots (now that you know where I like to buy them!). Typically “masculine” shirts help counterbalance the prettiness of a skirt and provide a smart option for office days. I recently bought a perfect pink shirt from COS and have my eye on a skirt from Róhe. Autumn has arrived and with it comes a shift in the fashion mood. The light, playful motifs of summer—polka dots, florals, lace—are giving way to things that are more serious and more grounded. On the high street, one pattern is cutting through the noise: checks. Never too far away from the zeitgeist, the classic print has been reimagined into something a little less traditional for AW25. That much was clear at the brand’s fashion show last weekend. Amidst the expensive-looking knitwear, elegantly cut coats and polished accessories, all of COS’s It items had one unifying theme: they were checked. On the streets of New York, guests arrived in head-to-toe COS, and almost every outfit hinged on the pattern—whether it was the Draped Checked Skirt styled with elevated shirting, or the Merino Wool Jacket worn with its coordinating micro-check skirt, which nodded to the year's ongoing obsession with preppy style. Even the humble Checked Flannel Shirt, available in classic beige or statement blue and black, was spotted repeatedly, cementing its place as a new-season essential.

Oh, I remember wearing pencil skirts. But the looks from 15 years ago are by no means comparable to the chic pencil skirt outfits I've spotted emerging with abundance during this summer-to-autumn transition.
