The beauty community has always been divided when it comes to the topic of eye cream. These little pots and tubes promise wonders after all, claiming to de-puff, as well as reduce dark circles and boost moisture. I too was skeptical, but after years of rigorous testing and bending the ear of many dermatologists, I've been sold on their merits for years. That is, with a caveat: not all eye creams are made alike. To get the most bang for your buck, you need to select the right one based on your concerns, and my biggest concern happens to be hollowness.

It's a tricky one to treat. As consultant dermatologist Dr Zainab Laftah tells me, hollowness under the eyes is usually down to a mix of genetics, bone structure and the natural ageing process, meaning there's only so much that topical creams can do. However, if you're not keen on more intensive measures, then the expert explains that there are a number of products that actually help stimulate collagen production and improve firmness and the overall look of your delicate under-eye area.

Ahead, a breakdown of what exactly causes under-eye hollowing and the very best products on the market to treat it.

What Causes Hollow Under Eyes?

As Dr Laftah explains, hollowing can be caused by a mix of ageing, genetics and your unique bone structure. "Some people are born with deeper-set eyes or facial features that naturally create a more noticeable under-eye hollow," she says.

Plus, as we age, the bone around the eye socket and upper cheek gradually remodels, while the fat that cushions the area can shrink or shift, and the supporting ligaments become looser. "At the same time, declining collagen and elastin levels cause the skin to become thinner and more lax," she adds. "Together, these changes reduce support beneath the eyes, making hollows and shadows more noticeable and the eye area appear darker or more tired."

How to Treat Hollow Under Eyes

The under-eye area has complex anatomy, so treatment depends on the cause and severity of the hollowness, and should be tailored to the individual. For suitable patients, Dr Laftah advises that hyaluronic acid dermal filler can be carefully placed to restore volume and provide greater support. "However, filler is not appropriate for everyone, particularly those with marked skin laxity, prominent under-eye bags or swelling, as it can sometimes make these concerns more noticeable." In certain cases, fat transfer or lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may be an option.

What to Look for in an Eye Cream

While products can improve the quality and appearance of the skin under the eyes, they cannot replace lost volume or correct the underlying bone, fat and ligament changes that cause hollowness, explains the expert.

That said, retinoids can stimulate collagen production and improve fine lines and skin texture, while vitamin C may help address signs of photo-damage. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen also helps prevent further UV-related collagen and elastin damage. Together, these ingredients can help the under-eye area look smoother and healthier—but opt for gentle, fragrance-free formulas, as the skin here is particularly sensitive. Plus, introduce active ingredients gradually to minimise irritation.

I've never met a Medik8 product I haven't loved, and the Crystal Retinal Ceramide Eye Cream is no exception. It contains retinal, glycerin, squalane and ceramides, all of which are essential for improving the appearance of under-eye areas—especially for those who have hollowing, as it can worsen the look of dark circles and accentuate puffiness. Plus, thanks to time-release technology, it's gentle enough for retinal newbies, yet clinically proven to soften crow's feet and expression lines. Hyaluronic acid filling spheres help combat dryness, dullness and dehydration, leaving the area looking plumped all day long.

2. Obagi Elastiderm Advanced Filler Concentrate

This clever treatment was inspired by needle-based procedures, like filler and Botox, and is clinically proven to fill and soften lines and wrinkles starting from the first application. You don't need to limit it to the eye area; it's also designed to be used all over the face, including the forehead and around the lips, too. Maximum results are seen eight hours after you use it, and over time, I have seen an improvement in the quality and smoothness of the skin in this delicate area. Plus, the precision-tip applicator makes it easy to apply to the smaller contours of the face.

3. Augustinus Bader The Rich Eye Cream

The key is in the name here: this eye cream by Augustinus Bader is incredibly rich and luxurious. Of course, it is on the luxury end, considering its price, but it is powered by TFC8—the brand's proprietary blend, backed by three decades of research and clinical study. The velvety formula is packed with peptides, amino acids and vitamins to help the skin regenerate. A perennial pennywort extract also protects against sun damage, as well as leaves the skin intensely hydrated and firmer-looking after just one use. It's the one to go to if moisture and fullness are your main aim.

4. iS Clinical GeneXC Firming Eye Gel

One of the issues with hollowing under the eyes is that it can make the area look darker overall. This fast-acting gel helps combat that with a powerful blend of vitamin C and peptides, which are supported with low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid to plump and palmitoyl tripeptide-5 to support collagen production. It works very fast; my under-eyes looked brighter in just two weeks—but go easy if you have sensitive eyes; this can tingle and may not work for very sensitive skin. I found I had to build up my tolerance by using a small amount initially.

5. L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Filler Renew Eye Cream

If you're looking for a hard-working eye cream on a budget, you can't go wrong here. This targets the tear trough specifically; L’Oréal's clinical studies found that this delicate area looked 10 per cent less hollow after sustained use. It also contains caffeine to help de-puff, while sodium hyaluronate, which is effective at holding water within the skin, leaves the area looking instantly fuller.

6. La Mer The Rejuvenating Eye Cream

If you're willing to splurge, La Mer's RPC-6 complex contains bio-filling algae to “micro-plump” and smooth the orbital area. In its clinical tests, respondents found a nine per cent improvement in the appearance of the tear trough after 12 weeks, as well as a 13 per cent improvement in plumpness. I also noticed considerable lift after sustained use, and the thick, cushiony texture, infused with glycerin and silicones, left everything feeling so hydrated and cushioned.

7. Clarins Total Eye Lift

If you want to treat hollowness, you need an eye cream that helps with lift. This gel-cream promises results in just 60 seconds; the skin immediately looks tighter, and 80 per cent of women in Clarins' study said their eye contour looked visibly lifted and open. The ingredients are worth shouting about, too: there's the natural retinol alternative, organic harungana, as well as smoothing plant extracts like caffeine and cassia flower. They're all gentle enough for those with sensitive eyes, too.

8. Shiseido Vital Perfection Uplifting and Firming Eye Cream

This velvety eye cream fulfils its uplifting claims thanks to the addition of retinol, alongside the brand's SafflowerRED technology, which is designed to target loss the laxity that comes with collagen loss. It's a great all-rounder, with caffeine, and plenty of hydrators, which also target sagging and eye bags, so if that's a concern, this is a great option. I also love the metal sculpting massage tool, which adds a cooling, sensorial touch.

9. La Prairie Skin Caviar Eye Lift

If you truly want to push the boat out, La Prairie's Skin Caviar Eye Lift is a 360-degree approach to under-eye hollowness. It lifts, firms and leaves the area looking considerably fuller after application. This watery, lightweight formula is infused with caviar extract, peptides, lipids and marine DNA, while glycerin and sodium hyaluronate hydrate and plump. In clinical studies, the brand found that 77 per cent of women noticed a lifting effect after eight weeks. Of course, it's incredibly expensive, but if you prefer a lightweight formula packed with powerhouse ingredients and almost-instant results, this may be worth it.

Despite having tried countless cleansers, moisturisers and serums on the market, my quest for glass-like, glowy skin continues. Whilst I tend to keep my skincare routine relatively simple, I'm always up for trying new products that promise a clear, dewy complexion, but, more often than not, these products have excellent marketing strategies but not so excellent results. That said, when I heard that the popular Japanese beauty brand Takami was launching into Space NK, my interest piqued.

Designed for even the most sensitive skin, this gentle serum is as potent as 30% glycolic acid, delivering clinical results without irritation. It almost sounds too good to be true, right? As someone who suffers from dullness, rough skin texture and visible pores, I've been busy putting the product to the test, and I can totally see why it's one of Japan's bestselling face serums.

Housed in a smart blue bottle, this serum comes with a pipette applicator, with a handy line to indicate the exact dose. But what makes the formula so powerful? The product itself is incredibly lightweight, and sinks into the skin in seconds. Anyone else get to the end of summer and start to feel a little...frazzled? My skin is dull and dry, my blonde balayage is looking far too brassy thanks to weeks of swimming and sunbathing, and after months of back-to-back gel manicures, my natural nails are hanging on for dear life. Luckily, as a beauty editor, I have access to some of the best experts in the industry, and I've been asking everyone how I can reset my beauty routine and feel my best for the season ahead.

Below, I've compiled the ultimate guide to caring for your hair, skin and nails, alongside lots of expert tips, tricks and product recommendations. If, like me, you're not feeling 100% and want to step up your self-care this September, I highly suggest you keep on scrolling.

The Expert-Approved, Summer-to-Autumn Beauty Routine

Summer-to-Autumn Skincare

First up, let's talk skincare routines. Whilst my complexion was relatively happy during the warmer months, it suddenly seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Turns out, this is pretty common. "The seasons can definitely have an impact on our skin barrier," says Dr Jason Thomson, consultant dermatologist and head of medical at Skin + Me. "As we move from summer into autumn, the combination of colder weather outside and central heating indoors can mean the skin loses more moisture. It might start to feel tight, dry or flaky. People with sensitive or eczema-prone skin may also notice more irritation or flare-ups."

That said, Dr Thomson tells me that it doesn't mean we have to change our routine completely. "The foundations I recommend are simple: cleanse, treat, hydrate and protect." Whilst your treatment step (and SPF) may remain the same, for example, a retinol or vitamin C serum, it might be your cleanser and moisturiser that need adjusting at this time of year.

"I would swap out a lighter moisturiser for a richer one, and perhaps use a gentler cleanser over an exfoliating one (which may be better tolerated during summer months)," adds Dr Beibei, dermatologist and ambassador for skincare brand Simple.

In terms of ingredients, Dr Thomson recommends looking out for ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide and centella asiatica. "They work in slightly different ways, but all can play a useful role in hydrating, soothing or supporting the skin barrier," he says. "Skin + Me’s Soothe + Smooth Rich Moisturiser is one option I like because it contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid, allantoin and shea butter. CeraVe Moisturising Cream is another good, widely available choice for dry skin. If someone is experiencing particularly dry or irritated patches, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ can be useful as a more targeted layer."

Summer-to-Autumn Haircare

As mentioned, my hair is looking dry and frazzled, and my colour has certainly seen better days. "By the end of summer, our hair has usually experienced months of UV exposure, heat, humidity, chlorine and salt water. These can deplete moisture, roughen the cuticle and cause colour to fade, leaving the hair feeling dry, dull and more prone to breakage," explains Luke Pluckrose, lead stylist at TRESemmé Professional. "Autumn is the perfect time to reset your routine and replenish the moisture lost throughout summer." So, how do we do this?

"I recommend starting with a small trim to remove dry or split ends, then introducing more intensive hydration into your weekly routine," Pluckrose tells me. "Once a week, replace your usual conditioner with the TRESemmé Professional Hydra Molecular Moisture Treatment Mask. Apply it mainly through the mid-lengths and ends and leave it on for three minutes to give dry areas a more intensive moisture boost."

Aside from a hydrating hair mask, I'll also be reaching for a purple shampoo once a week to help banish brassiness, alongside a hair gloss to boost shine.

Summer-to-Autumn Nail Care

I went to my nail appointment the other week to get my gels taken off and give them a breather, and I was quite surprised by just how weak they were. Months of colourful nail art and gel manicures have definitely taken their toll, and I'm ready to give my nails a reset. "After travelling, spending time in the sea or pool, and being exposed to sun and heat, it’s often the skin around the nails that needs the most attention," says the expert team at one of my favourite luxury nail salons, So.Shell. "Autumn is a great time to focus on hydration — I recommend using cuticle oil daily, as well as a nourishing hand cream, especially one containing urea, to keep the skin soft and prevent dryness."

According to the expert team at So.Shell, consistency is key. "Apply cuticle oil at least once a day — ideally before bed — and massage it into the cuticles and the skin around the nails. Keep your hands moisturised and wear gloves when using cleaning products or when your hands are exposed to water for long periods."

Another reason your nails might not be feeling their best is if you've worn gel polish for longer than recommended. After a very busy summer, I'm definitely guilty of this one, but luckily, the experts have some great advice. "If a client has experienced significant damage, we may recommend taking a break from gel enhancements while the damaged part of the nail grows out. During this time, we focus on keeping the nails short, protected and well moisturised with cuticle oil and nourishing products."

I'll be investing in some at-home autumn nail polishes, such as Chanel's Rouge Noir, until I'm ready to book in at So.Shell once again.

Summer-to-Autumn Bodycare

Last but not least, let's talk body care. I feel like this step is often overlooked, but after a summer of UV exposure, salt water, chlorine and more, our skin is definitely in need of some TLC. "I treat the skin below my neck exactly as I would my face –particularly the décolletage, shoulders, arms, hands and legs, which have often accumulated significant UV exposure," says Dr Anna Persaud, This Works CEO and biochemist. "The neck and décolletage deserve particular attention because they accumulate UV exposure but are often neglected. I use the This Works Perfect Cleavage and Neck Serum across my neck, chest and shoulders for antioxidant and firming support."

Another thing you can add to your routine? Red light therapy. "Photobiomodulation using red and near-infrared wavelengths is interesting after periods of increased UV exposure because it can support cellular energy production and the skin’s own repair processes, while helping to modulate inflammation and support collagen and skin resilience," Dr Persaud tells me. If you've been thinking about it, now might be the time to invest in an at-home LED device.

Alongside these recommendations, I always try to incorporate some kind of scrub to get rid of all that dead skin, alongside lots of hydrating body lotions, serums and oils. "Vitamin C is another important part of my post-summer routine, and I use it on my body day and night," adds Dr Persaud. "I use the This Works Perfect Body Vit C Glow."

Around this time of year, I like to switch out my summer scents for autumnal fragrances, and this goes for my bodycare, too. Gone are my coconut and vanilla shower gels and body creams, replaced by fresh, crisp, invigorating delights.

I’ve always had a bit of a lip balm addiction. There’s always one on my bedside table, one (or three) in my handbag, a couple in my desk drawer and, much to the frustration of my husband, a few more scattered chaotically around the house. And whilst autumn’s arrival feels like a natural time to talk about the best ones—traditionally the weather starts to cool, and the air feels a little more harsh—I’ve found that dry, chapped lips can be just as much of a summer problem as they are an autumn and winter one. Emerging from a season of pretty intense heat and sun exposure, I’ve found that my lips are already feeling chapped, tight and flaky. Which is why I’ve been on a quest to find the best lip balms for dry lips.

For me, a good lip balm is less of a nice-to-have and more of a daily beauty essential, and the best ones are those that genuinely make a difference to the condition of my lips long-term. Plus, I’m fickle, so while they do need to deliver on intense hydration and rich moisture, I’m partial to ones that also smell amazing and look great too. I’ve tried hundreds over the years, but before we get into the ones I’m willing to pay genuine lip service to, I wanted to know exactly what causes dry lips and how we should be looking after them.

What Causes Dry Lips?

Unsurprisingly, dry lips are one of the most common skin issues. “It’s because the skin on our lips is much thinner and doesn't have the same oil glands as the rest of our skin, so it loses moisture more easily,” explains aesthetic nurse and founder of R&R Aesthetics, Caroline Hall. “Cold weather, sun exposure, air conditioning, dehydration and repeatedly licking your lips can all make it worse.” However, Hall does mention that if you are experiencing persistent or extreme dryness then it could point to an underlying issue like an allergy (to skincare or even toothpaste) or a condition like eczema. “Lips that are continually cracked, sore or inflamed are worth getting checked rather than simply applying more lip balm,” she advises.

How to Choose the Best Lip Balm

It seems that the key to choosing an efficacious lip balm is to spend a bit of time looking at the ingredients list. Hall recommends choosing a balm that contains ingredients that both add moisture and help to seal it in. Her top pick? Good old-fashioned petrolatum: yes, that’s Vaseline. “Petrolatum is one of the simplest and most effective options for reducing moisture loss, while ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides and squalane can help soften and support the skin barrier.” For daytime use, rather than an overnight treatment, Hall also suggests looking for a lip balm with SPF to combat UV exposure, which can cause dry and damaged lips.

As for any ingredients to avoid? “I’d be careful with anything that makes your lips tingle, sting or feel particularly cooling. Ingredients like menthol, camphor and some fragrances may actually irritate already dry or cracked lips,” Hall explains. She also recommends avoiding lip scrubs or exfoliators when lips are very dry. “If the skin barrier is already damaged, repeatedly exfoliating it can make the problem worse,” she says.

1. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume Lips

When my lips are really struggling—particularly during instances where I've been unwell and I'm dehydrated, or I've spent a lot of time outdoors—then this is the lip balm that I always come back to. Rather than a glossy balm or tinted formula, it's a real barrier-focused product that feels like it really tackles repairing compromised lips and helps restore their health. It has quite a thick texture that really coats the lips and helps to take the sting out of any particularly dry or uncomfortable patches, yet it isn't sticky in the slightest. It's a great option to keep by your bed and apply generously overnight, just because it does have that thicker consistency that makes it feel more like a treatment, but it would make a decent everyday option too if you really struggle with dry or very chapped lips.

2. Mecca Cosmetica Lip De-Luscious SPF20

I’m a big believer that lip balm should ideally come with SPF, particularly because it’s an area that’s very easy to forget when applying sunscreen. And as someone who has actually burnt their lips in the past, I am well aware of just how sore they can be. Mecca Cosmetica’s Lip De-Luscious is the balm that I've been reaching for most during the heatwaves this summer for that very reason—it contains SPF 20. Plus, it's also packed with shea butter, plant oils and vitamin E so it doesn't compromise on hydration either. It's moisturising yet feels lightweight, and delivers the prettiest pink sheen to lips so I tend to skip my usual lip glosses and lipsticks when I wear this. The pot is robust enough to chuck into handbags and beach bags too, yet it's pleasingly weighty so feels quite luxurious when you take it out to reapply too.

3. Alpha-H Peptide Lip Perfector

I’m always sceptical of lip products that promise plumper-looking lips, and have always hated those intensely tingling glosses that practically burn your lips into looking more full. However, this one from Alpha-H has only recently landed on my doorstep, but I've been wearing it every day since. While the peppermint oil does give a slightly refreshing tingle, it's the science-backed peptides that really do the heavy lifting when it comes to plumping and smoothing lips. Even if it's just a subtle wash, I rarely step out of the house without some kind of tint on my lips so I'm always going to be tempted by a lip balm that offers both hydration and colour. And, like so many other people, Rhode’s Peptide Lip Tints have become a staple for those days when I want to feel more put together without actually wearing lipstick. Packed with peptides, shea butter and vitamin E, the formula feels nourishing and glossy while the tint provides a sheer pop of colour that can easily be applied without a mirror. I particularly love Jelly Bean, a sheer and slightly shimmery pink, and Colada, a summery pink-bronze shade.

Although this isn’t purely a lip balm, I’m including it here because it’s one of my favourite multipurpose products for tackling seriously dry skin—and that includes lips. When mine are flaky, tight or in need of some serious TLC, I like applying a generous layer of this before bed and letting the hardworking formula do its thing overnight. It feels rich and protective, thanks to pharmaceutical-grade petrolatum, ceramides and hyaluronic acid, without needing to constantly reapply. And I love that I can also use the same tube on dry hands, cuticles and other rough patches. It’s definitely not the prettiest lip product in my collection, and the texture is much more ointment-like than a traditional balm, but when it comes to rescuing dry lips, it delivers.

Traditionally, I've always considered injectable treatments as occasional beauty appointments—you book a consultation, have the treatment, and return when the results begin to wear off. But increasingly, I've noticed aesthetics clinics are borrowing from a model more commonly associated with blowdries and gym memberships. Enter the injectables subscription. The obvious appeal is that a subscription can make the cost of regular aesthetic treatments feel more manageable by spreading it across the year, and also give you a clearer idea of what you are spending. But I think it's important to remember that injectables aren't quite the same as a monthly manicure or facial. What Is a Rich Cream?

Much like the name suggests, a rich cream is a thick, deeply nourishing moisturiser designed to hydrate and repair the skin. If you’ve ever stood in front of a skincare shelf wondering whether you should be reaching for glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid or something else entirely, then you’re not alone. Exfoliating acids can feel confusing at the best of times and, if you don’t already use them regularly, the idea of adding one into your skincare routine can be slightly intimidating. Let’s be honest—hearing the word acid in the context of your face can feel a bit scary. Add in the fact that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to exfoliation and it all gets a whole lot more complicated.

The good news, however, is that you don’t need to get a degree in chemistry to work out which acid is right for your skin—we’ve created a comprehensive guide to do the hard work for you. You see, different acids work in different ways, with some being suited best for congestion and breakouts, others for dullness, and some for uneven texture and pigmentation. The key is finding one that works with your skin rather than simply opting for the most potent formula you can find. (Trust me, I’ve been there.)

Ahead, we spoke with Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, GP, aesthetics doctor and owner of The Aesthetics Doctor to get the lowdown on exactly how adding an exfoliating acid to your routine can benefit your skin. Plus, we’re breaking down the three main categories (that’s AHAs, BHAs and PHAs) and sharing the key acids within each, as well as product recommendations, so you can work out which ones will work for you.

What Are Exfoliating Acids?

Simply put, exfoliating acids are chemical compounds that help to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells and the skin in order to remove them more effectively. “Rather than relying on physical scrubs, exfoliating acids help the cells to shed more evenly and the result is smoother, brighter-looking skin, improved texture and, over time, a more even skin tone,” explains Dr El Muntasar. And it’s not just surface changes either. “Depending on the acid, they can also help unclog pores, reduce breakouts, soften fine lines and improve the absorption of other skincare products,” says Dr El Muntasar.

If you’re a little hesitant to get started, then good news: Dr El Muntasar points out that exfoliating acids are actually one of the most well-researched and effective categories of skincare ingredients, as long as they’re used correctly. “The biggest mistake that people make with exfoliating acids is doing too much too quickly,” says Dr El Muntasar. “People often combine multiple exfoliating acids with retinoids, vitamin C and physical scrubs, thinking they’ll get faster results. In reality, that usually leads to irritation, dryness and a compromised skin barrier.” He also suggests starting out slowly—just once or twice a week and increasing if your skin is tolerating the ingredient well. Plus, SPF is key. “Freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, so sunscreen becomes non-negotiable and daily SPF even more important,” Dr El Muntasar explains.

Who Should Use Exfoliating Acids?

As we’re talking about such a large category of products, most people actually will be able to find an exfoliating acid that works for them. However, Dr El Muntasar points out that they might not be suitable all of the time. “If your skin barrier is damaged, you’re experiencing an eczema flare, active dermatitis or significant irritation, I would usually focus on repairing the barrier before introducing exfoliation,” he explains.

As for those with sensitive skin? He advises that you don’t need to avoid acids altogether if you have rosacea or sensitivity, but should choose gentler acids (like lactic acid or PHA), introduce them gradually and use them less frequently. “Stronger isn’t always better anyway,” explains Dr El Muntasar. “A lower-strength product used consistently often gives better long-term results than an aggressive product that leaves the skin inflamed.”

Every exfoliating acid has its own strengths and Dr El Muntasar advises that “the best acid really depends on the skin concern you’re trying to treat rather than assuming one is universally better than another”. So, with that in mind, keep scrolling as we get into the three main types of exfoliating acids—AHAs, BHAs and PHAs—and explain what they do, who they’re best for, and the best products to shop from each.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Alpha Hydroxy Acids, or AHAs, are water-soluble acids that work primarily on the surface of the skin, loosening the bonds between dead skin cells and encouraging them to shed to leave your skin smoother, brighter and more even. They’re particularly useful if your main concerns are dullness, rough texture or uneven skin tone.

“Glycolic acid is excellent for improving dullness, pigmentation and fine lines because its small molecular size allows it to penetrate effectively, while something like lactic acid is slightly gentler and also attracts water into the skin, making it a great choice for people with dry or more sensitive skin,” says Dr El Muntasar.

Glycolic Acid

The smallest AHA molecule, glycolic acid, can penetrate effectively into the skin, making it one of the more powerful exfoliating acids. It’s particularly good for improving dullness, uneven texture and the appearance of pigmentation and fine lines.

Lactic Acid

A slightly gentler AHA than glycolic acid, lactic acid exfoliates while also helping to support skin’s moisture levels. It’s a good option for dry or dehydrated skin that still wants the benefits of chemical exfoliation.

Mandelic acid

With a larger molecular size than glycolic and lactic acids, mandelic acid tends to exfoliate more slowly and gently. It can be a good choice for sensitive or blemish-prone skin and can help with uneven tone and texture.

Malic acid

Found naturally in fruits such as apples, malic acid is a larger AHA that offers relatively gentle exfoliation. It’s often combined with other acids rather than used alone, helping to brighten and smooth the skin.

Beta Hydroxy Acids

The first thing to know about beta hydroxy acids, or BHAs, is that they are oil-soluble. “That means they can travel into pores to dissolve excess oil and debris, making them the gold standard for oily, acne-prone or congestion-prone skin,” says Dr El Muntasar. “The primarily used BHA is salicylic acid, which is particularly useful for blackheads and recurrent breakouts.” BHAs also help to dissolve the build-up of oil and dead skin cells that can contribute to congestion, while also providing surface exfoliation.

Salicylic acid

The best-known BHA, salicylic acid, is oil-soluble and can penetrate into pores to help clear excess sebum and dead skin cells. It’s particularly useful for breakouts, blackheads, congestion and oily skin.

Polyhydroxy Acids

Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are often considered the gentler cousins of AHAs. “They have larger molecules, so they penetrate more slowly and tend to cause less irritation,” explains Dr El Muntasar. “They’re ideal for people with sensitive skin, rosacea-prone skin or those new to exfoliating acids. They still improve skin texture but are generally much better tolerated.” They also have humectant properties, meaning they can help attract and retain moisture in the skin. They won’t necessarily deliver the same intensity of exfoliation as an AHA or BHA, but they can be a useful option for maintaining smoother, brighter-looking skin without overdoing it.

Gluconolactone, lactobionic acid and galactose

PHAs are one of the less-readily available exfoliating acids in the UK market, so we’re going to lump the key acids together in one here. Gluconolactone is the most common, and works to gently exfoliate the skin while helping to attract moisture—a great option for sensitive or dehydrated skin. Derived from lactose, lactobionic acid is another gentle PHA with exfoliating and humectant properties. It can help improve the appearance of texture while supporting skin hydration. Finally, galactose is a naturally occurring sugar that can be used in PHA formulations.

The newer CyroGlow Plus features more LED bulbs around the outer eye area, nose and lips, delivering superior LED coverage to these areas compared to the original model. My Experience

The experience of the new CryoGlow Plus feels exactly the same as the original, which I already love. They have the same treatment modes, cooling under-eye settings and overall design aside from some updated colourways. However, you can see that the new version has more LED bulbs around the mouth, nose and outer eye area, which improves the coverage of the LED benefits on your skin. The optimised battery life is a welcome addition, however, meaning I don't have to charge it up quite as frequently.

The treatment modes are exactly the same, including Better Ageing, Blemish Repair, Skin Sustain and Under-Eye Revive (which you can set at 5, 10 or 15 minutes, depending on how long you want to use the cooling pads without the LED). Similar to the original, you can also track your progress and see how many sessions of each treatment you have completed each week. It also comes with snap-on cooling under-eye plates, should you need them to enhance the fit of the mask on your face, and the same adjustable straps so you can ensure a snug fit. I can confirm that this is an LED mask you can wear whilst walking around without fear of it sliding off!

After a month of testing, I can't say that I've seen a huge difference from the improved coverage around the eyes, lips and nose just yet, although I do feel reassured that I'm having better coverage in those areas overall, and those benefits will be revealed after a couple of months. My complexion definitely looks noticeably less red, more glowy and even since I've been using this LED mask. The treatments are also shorter compared to other LED masks that often require 10-30 minutes, depending on the model. In comparison, the LED treatments on Shark's device just take 4-8 minutes, making it really quick and easy to add into your skincare routine before bed, or to quickly de-puff your eyes in the morning (it's been a total blessing during allergy season). Out of all the LED masks I've tried, this is by far the easiest to stick to as a habit, and that consistency plays a big part in the results you see in your skin.

Final Thoughts

As I've mentioned, I already loved the original CryoGlow Mask, so I like that this newer version now has better LED coverage around the eyes and lips, in addition to the enhanced battery life. Do I think you need to upgrade to the new version if you already own the original? No. But if you've been thinking about buying a Shark LED mask for a while, then I do think it's now worth investing the extra £40 and upgrading to the CryoGlow Plus instead, especially if your concerns are around your eyes, lips or nose.

Can I be completely honest for a second? Every time I hear a new skincare brand is launching, I think: "Do we really need another one?" I find creating the perfect skincare routine confusing enough without throwing even more products into the mix. Whilst the price point certainly adds to the appeal, what first grabbed my attention was the brand's efficacious ingredients and simplistic approach to an everyday skincare routine. I've been busy putting the brand to the test, and within a few days of using the products, I already knew I would be writing a full review on Prequel. I’m not someone who pores over my skin in the mirror each day, yet it’s been impossible for me not to notice the gradual emergence of dark spots on my skin over the last few years. I’ve had pigmentation on my skin since I was a teenager, due to post-acne scarring, but two bouts of pregnancy melasma and some more discolouration after the summer mean that I’m starting to feel a little self-conscious about it all. And with sun exposure often making pigmentation more noticeable, whether that’s existing marks becoming darker or new areas of discolouration appearing, I reckon that I won’t be the only one out there feeling this way.

Hyperpigmentation is the term used when areas of skin become darker than the surrounding skin due to an increase in melanin production. But it isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are different types of hyperpigmentation, with everything from sun damage and hormonal changes to inflammation and blemishes playing a role. Whatever the cause, pigmentation is incredibly common—and one of the most asked-about skincare concerns for good reason—but it means that the best approach depends on what’s causing the pigmentation in the first place.

To help make sense of it all, we’ve spoken to dermatologists and skincare experts about what causes hyperpigmentation, which skincare ingredients they recommend and the products they rate. From daily SPF to targeted serums, there are plenty of products for hyperpigmentation, and this guide covers the best ones to fade dark spots and improve uneven skin tone.

What Is Hyperpigmentation?

In simple terms, hyperpigmentation is when patches of the skin become darker than the surrounding area due to excess melanin production. “It’s an umbrella term that isn’t a diagnosis itself, but a sign that can result from several different conditions, and the treatment depends on the cause,” explains consultant dermatologist Dr Faraz Imran, The Skin Investment Clinic. “Therefore, what works well for acne marks isn't necessarily the best treatment for melasma or sun spots.”

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

While there are many different causes, experts seem to agree that the most common is sun exposure—which is one of the reasons that wearing SPF daily is so important. “UV exposure ramps up melanin production, which is one of the main triggers for hyperpigmentation,” says skin health expert Holly Mason. “ But inflammation from acne, cuts or eczema can also leave dark marks behind, and hormonal shifts—particularly during pregnancy or with birth control— can trigger melasma too. And certain medications and irritating skincare products can also play a role.”

What Ingredients Are Best to Treat Hyperpigmentation?

Experts are unanimous that a broad-spectrum SPF applied daily is the single most important treatment for preventing and also treating hyperpigmentation. "Without sun protection, pigmentation often recurs despite using active ingredients,” says Dr Imran. In terms of active ingredients, though, the most effective is a topical ingredient called hydroquinone, which Dr Imran explains is prescription-only in the UK due to its potency, and should be used under medical supervision.

Thankfully, there are plenty of over-the-counter ingredients that are also efficacious at treating discolouration. “Vitamin C, niacinamide, and azelaic acid are excellent for brightening and calming pigmentation, while tranexamic acid has become increasingly popular for melasma specifically,” says Mason. “Retinoids and gentle chemical exfoliants like glycolic or lactic acid also help by speeding up cell turnover, although I’d recommend introducing these gradually rather than layering everything at once.”

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

If you’ve come to this guide hoping for a quick fix for hyperpigmentation, then prepare to be disappointed—treating it is more of a long-term game. “Skin cell turnover takes around a month, so most people won’t see visible change for six to 12 weeks,” says Mason, who stresses the importance of sticking to a skincare routine. “Consistency is far more important than any single ‘miracle’ product and sporadic use won’t shift stubborn pigmentation,” she says.

And Dr Imran agrees: “Most evidence-based treatments require patience. Early improvements may become noticeable after six to eight weeks, but meaningful improvement usually takes around three to six months of consistent treatment and diligent sun protection. Melasma, in particular, is a chronic condition with a tendency to recur, so maintenance treatment is often required,” Dr Imran says.

For this piece, I spoke with skincare experts consultant dermatologist Dr Faraz Imran of The Skin Investment Clinics and skin health expert Holly Mason to get their advice on which products really do work to improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation over time. I'll be the first to admit that when it comes to skincare, I'm very sceptical of bold marketing claims. The Formula

This formula features a blend of AHAs and BHAs. These chemical exfoliants work together to remove dead skin cells, decongest and reveal your glowiest complexion yet. It's got everything from glycolic acid, tartaric acid, lactic acid, citric acid, salicylic acid and...you get the point. At first, I thought it sounded way too harsh for my sensitive skin, but the brand has added soothing plant extracts which seem to minimise irritation. Targeting texture, breakouts and oiliness, it's safe to say that my complexion laps this stuff up.

For me, the biggest plus is that it combines AHAs and BHAs, meaning I can keep the rest of my routine simple, knowing I'm getting all the actives I want in one effective formula.

The Application

Although the serum doesn't feel too irritating, I don't actually apply it every night. I started very slowly, applying it once a week and seeing how my skin reacted. I now use it about two to three times a week, and on the days I'm not using it, I focus on protecting my skin barrier and using lots of hydrating, soothing products.

When you first apply it, it can feel a little tingly, but this soon subsides. It might sound weird, but I actually quite like it, as it feels similar to my in-clinic treatments. It has a nice, lightweight, refreshing gel texture, and sinks into the skin instantly.

The Results

I'm not about to sit here and tell you that this skincare product has changed my life, but it has dramatically improved my complexion. The glow was almost instant, and after using it consistently for over a month, I feel my skin's texture has already started to improve, too. In fact, when I stop using it, I notice an immediate difference. In terms of enlarged pores and blackheads, I do think it will take a little longer (and perhaps more regular use) to notice a big change, but the way things are going, I can already tell it's working. My complexion looks healthier, my foundation goes on more smoothly, and my overall skincare routine seems to be working a whole lot better. I now refer to it as my missing puzzle piece.

This product is an investment, but in my opinion, the level of active skincare ingredients is definitely worth it. Plus, it saves you from buying multiple serums, as it covers so many bases in one go. Bravo, Drunk Elephant, bravo.

As someone who works in beauty, it should come as no surprise that I take my skincare very seriously, and I’m lucky that my job gives me the privilege of being able to try a wide range of cleansers, SPFs, and, of course, moisturisers daily. And after many years of swatching, testing, and comparing, I’ll let you in on a secret: the best face creams I’ve tried all come from the French pharmacy. Loved by editors, dermatologists and beauty enthusiasts alike for their extensive skincare selection, French pharmacies offer affordable yet effective moisturisers that are difficult to find in your standard British chemist. And the most popular formula by far is none other than Embryolisse’s Lait-Crème.

Launched in 1950 by a Parisian dermatologist, this rich cream was initially created to treat skin diseases and infections. However, it soon gained a cult following among makeup artists for its ability to plump, hydrate and prep the skin for foundation. And its popularity has only grown since. Almost eight decades later, this French moisturiser has a bigger following than ever, loved by the likes of editors, TikTok beauty influencers and celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian alike. So, of course, when it launched in the UK in 2019, I knew I had to give it a go, and I’ve been hooked ever since. And now, with the sensitive-skin and retinol-like versions launching in 2021 and 2024 respectively, I knew I had to give these newer formulas a try as well.

The Formula

A rich cream through and through, the original Lait-Crème is a whipped lotion that hugs the skin and leaves it feeling plump and nourished. With a blend of shea butter, aloe vera, hydrolysed soy protein, and mineral oil, this formula works perfectly on my dehydrated face and body; however, I would note that this might feel too heavy on those with oily or acne-prone skin.

In comparison, the Lait-Crème Sensitive has a much thinner and runnier texture, which those with oilier skin might prefer. This is because it replaces mineral oil with plant oils, which makes it well-suited to those who have sensitive skin. However, I do have to note that this doesn’t feel as nourishing as the original formula, something that might be difficult for those with both dry and sensitive skin, as the original cream contains fragrance.

Finally, the Lait-Crème Retinol-Like is by far the richest of the bunch, with carnauba wax and apricot kernel oil at its base. These ingredients create a much denser moisturiser that’s ideal for plumping skin that needs a pick-up or if you want to reduce skin texture and fine lines. Plus, because there’s no actual retinol, anyone can use this freely as a night mask to wake up with deeply nourished skin.

My Verdict

I really didn’t think that anything would top the original Embryolisse Lait-Crème for me; however, I’ve managed to make room on my skincare shelf for all three formulas. Whilst the original cream remains my go-to daily, the sensitive version is perfect for the heatwave days we’ve been experiencing here in the UK, and the retinol-like formula comes in handy when my skin really needs that extra boost of hydration, as well as when the weather cools down.

They all sit well under makeup, and none leave a white cast on my deeper skin tone. In fact, they leave me with a healthy-looking glow that’s been hard to replicate with other moisturisers I’ve tried. Not to mention that this product can be used as a classic moisturiser, a makeup primer or a gentle cleanser, making it perfect for those who want to streamline their skincare routine.

Of course, there’s no need to invest in all three formulas, so further down, I’ve advised on which version of Embryolisse’s Lait-Crème you should invest in based on your skin type. However, trust me when I say that regardless of which formula you choose to try, you won’t regret investing in it.

Retinoids, niacinamide, and vitamin C might dominate the skincare ingredients conversation, but if you ask me, azelaic acid is one of the most overlooked ingredients on the market. Despite being recommended by dermatologists for decades, it still doesn't receive the same attention as many of today's trending actives, which is surprising given how many concerns it can address at once. Whether you're dealing with breakouts, persistent redness, post-inflammatory pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and even rosacea, azelaic acid is one of the few ingredients that can tackle them all while remaining incredibly gentle on the skin.

It's an ingredient I've used in my own routine for years and one I recommend to many of my clients as an esthetician. Unlike stronger actives, which can sometimes trigger irritation before delivering results, azelaic acid is generally very well tolerated, making it particularly useful for people with sensitive skin who still want to treat concerns such as acne or pigmentation.

"Azelaic acid is a famously multitasking ingredient," explains consultant dermatologist and Simple ambassador Beibei Du-Harpur. "At prescription strength, it is a treatment for skin conditions such as acne and rosacea, and it can also help with some types of pigmentation concerns. Because it's very safe, it is used a lot in pregnancy and in those trying to conceive. As it is a treatment for rosacea skin, which is very sensitive, it is a really helpful option for those with multiple skin concerns who are prone to irritation."

While prescription formulas remain the gold standard, over-the-counter azelaic acid serums have become increasingly sophisticated, making it easier than ever to incorporate the ingredient into your daily routine. Below, dermatologists explain exactly what azelaic acid is, how it works, and who can benefit most from using it.

What Is Azelaic Acid?

"Azelaic acid is an active ingredient that is found in both prescription and cosmetic skincare formulations," says Du-Harpur. "It is also a naturally occurring substance found in wheat and rye."

Consultant dermatologist and Head of Medical at Skin + Me Jason Thomson adds that it's also "a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid that can be produced by malassezia, a type of yeast that normally lives on the skin." He explains that it has "been used by dermatologists for decades to treat acne and rosacea, as well as concerns such as hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone." Despite the name, it doesn't behave like exfoliating acids such as glycolic or salicylic acid. "Although it is called an acid, it works differently from exfoliating acids such as AHAs and BHAs and is often gentler on the skin," he adds.

What Does Azelaic Acid Do?

One of the reasons dermatologists love azelaic acid is because it targets several different pathways in the skin simultaneously. "Azelaic acid is a real multitasker, which is why we recommend it so often," says Thomson. "It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm redness and inflamed spots, making it particularly useful for acne and rosacea. It also helps to normalise the way skin cells are shed inside the pores, reducing the blockages that lead to blackheads, whiteheads and acne breakouts."

Beyond blemishes, it also works on pigmentation. "Azelaic acid can inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the production of melanin," Thomson explains. "With regular use, it can therefore help improve post-acne marks, melasma, and other forms of hyperpigmentation."

Du-Harpur notes that while prescription formulations have the strongest evidence behind them, cosmetic products can still be worthwhile. "Because of its usefulness in these skin conditions, cosmetic formulations have been developed containing azelaic acid, albeit at a lower percentage than the prescription formulas. These may provide some of the benefits the prescription products do, but it's worth mentioning that most cosmetic formulas haven't been assessed at the final formulation level, so the benefits are theoretical based on the presence of the ingredient rather than being formally tested for effectiveness."

Who Is Azelaic Acid Suitable for?

Perhaps azelaic acid's biggest strength is how many people can benefit from it. "It is suitable for most people but particularly those with sensitive skin alongside other skin concerns," says Du-Harpur. "It can help with redness, spots, and mild pigmentation concerns. It doesn't yield dramatic changes but can gradually calm and improve skin concerns over time."

Thomson agrees, particularly highlighting its versatility. "Azelaic acid is suitable for a wide range of skin types and can be particularly helpful for people with acne, rosacea, post-acne marks, melasma or uneven skin tone," he says. "It is often a good option for people whose skin is both acne-prone and sensitive, particularly if they struggle to tolerate retinoids or stronger exfoliating acids."

He also points out another major benefit: "Azelaic acid can generally be used during pregnancy, unlike topical or oral retinoids, which must be avoided. This can make it particularly useful for pregnancy-related acne or melasma," although he advises anyone using medicated skincare during pregnancy to discuss it with their doctor or dermatologist.

Are There Any Downsides to Using Azelaic Acid?

Compared with many active ingredients, azelaic acid has relatively few drawbacks. In fact, Du-Harpur points out that "it is actually a treatment for reaction-prone skin (and rosacea), so it is generally well tolerated." Instead, she says the main limitation is that "sometimes its benefits need time to manifest, and it can also be insufficiently effective if used alone, meaning it may need to be used alongside other actives."

Like any skincare ingredient, some irritation is still possible, particularly when first introducing it. "Azelaic acid is generally well tolerated, but it can cause irritation, particularly when someone first starts using it or introduces a higher-strength product," says Thomson. "Possible reactions include tingling, stinging, itching, redness, dryness and mild peeling."

Fortunately, this can usually be minimised by introducing it slowly. "I would normally recommend using it every other night or two to three times a week initially, then increasing the frequency as the skin becomes accustomed to it," he says. "Applying a simple moisturiser alongside it and avoiding the introduction of several active ingredients at the same time can also help."
