As an esthetician, one of the questions I'm asked more than almost any other is, "How do I get rid of my pores?" It's an understandable concern—after all, smooth, poreless skin is everywhere on social media—but it's also based on one of the biggest misconceptions in skincare. The truth is, you can't actually get rid of your pores. Pores are tiny openings in the skin that allow sebum (oil) and sweat to reach the surface, helping to keep skin healthy and functioning as it should. Every single person has them, and despite what many products claim, they can't be opened, closed or erased.

With that said, pores can absolutely appear larger or more noticeable. Genetics and lifestyle play a huge role in determining pore size, but excess oil production, congestion, sun damage, and a loss of collagen and elasticity can also make them look more prominent. As dermatologist Sonia Khorana explains, people with oily skin often find that "their pores may be more visible or enlarged," alongside increased shine, blackheads, and breakouts. Excess sebum is largely influenced by hormones and genetics, although stress and environmental factors can also contribute.

Fortunately, while you can't shrink a pore permanently, you can make it appear much less noticeable. Keeping pores clear with ingredients like salicylic acid is one part of the puzzle, but it's far from the only solution. Supporting collagen production with ingredients such as retinoids and peptides can help improve the skin's firmness over time, while well-hydrated skin reflects light more evenly, making pores appear softer and less defined. Pore-minimising toners can be particularly effective because they combine exfoliating, oil-balancing and hydrating ingredients in one easy step, helping skin look smoother and more refined with consistent use.

What to Look for

The best pore-minimising toners don't actually minimise the size of your pores; they minimise the things that make them look more noticeable. Which formula is right for you depends largely on what's causing your pores to stand out in the first place.

If excess oil and congestion are your main concerns, look for salicylic acid (BHA), one of the gold-standard ingredients for oily skin. Because it's oil-soluble, it can penetrate inside the pore to dissolve excess sebum and dead skin cells that stretch pores and lead to blackheads. Khorana recommends salicylic acid for helping to regulate sebum production, alongside niacinamide, zinc and retinoids.

Niacinamide is another excellent ingredient to prioritise. As well as helping to regulate oil production, it supports the skin barrier and can improve overall skin texture, making pores appear less obvious over time. If your skin is oily but also sensitive, gentler exfoliating acids such as lactic acid or mandelic acid can offer similar smoothing benefits with a lower risk of irritation.

Hydration is equally important, even if your skin is oily. "Remember not to be very harsh with your skin as it can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to skin dryness and sensitivity," says Khorana. Ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol and ceramides help maintain healthy hydration levels, while supporting the skin barrier. This is particularly important because dehydrated skin can often compensate by producing even more oil, making pores appear more noticeable.

How to Use Pore-Minimising Toners

Pore-minimising toners should be applied after cleansing and before serums and moisturiser. Most formulas are designed to be swept over clean skin using your hands or a cotton pad, although always follow the brand's instructions, as some exfoliating formulas are intended for less frequent use.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is overusing exfoliating toners in the hope of seeing faster results. Whilst ingredients like salicylic acid and AHAs can be incredibly effective, using them too often can disrupt the skin barrier, leading to irritation, dehydration and even increased oil production. If you're using an exfoliating toner, start by applying it two to three times a week before gradually increasing if your skin tolerates it well. Hydrating or barrier-supporting toners, on the other hand, can usually be used morning and evening. Whatever formula you choose, consistency—and daily SPF—is what will deliver the best long-term results.

What to Look For

The most common changes I see in my mature clients are increased dryness, dullness, loss of firmness, fine lines, slower healing and a reduction in overall radiance. Many people also notice that products they used for years suddenly don't seem to perform in quite the same way, simply because the skin's needs have evolved. Cell turnover naturally slows, collagen production declines, and the skin barrier becomes more vulnerable to dehydration and environmental stressors.

Rather than trying to correct every visible sign of ageing, I recommend prioritising skin health first. How to Build a Skincare Routine for Mature Skin

Whenever I'm building a skincare routine for clients, I follow one simple principle: every product should have a clear purpose. Rather than layering multiple products that all claim to do the same thing, I focus on creating a balanced routine that protects the skin during the day and supports repair overnight.

In the morning, the priority is prevention. This means cleansing away overnight oil and sweat before applying antioxidants to help defend against free radical damage, moisturising ingredients to strengthen the skin barrier and, most importantly, a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect collagen from UV damage. No anti-ageing product will outperform daily SPF.

Evening skincare is where I encourage clients to invest a little more time. Is Vitamin C Safe for Black Skin?

"Vitamin C is considered generally safe and beneficial for Black skin. Because melanin-rich skin is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, its antioxidant and tyrosinase-inhibiting properties make it an important feature of maintaining an even and radiant complexion. My caution is to avoid high concentrations of L-ascorbic acid (20%) without a patch test, as it can cause irritation that may lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation," explains Dr Sommerlad.

How Should I Apply Vitamin C?

"Vitamin C is best used in the morning to protect the skin from the effects of outdoor pollution and UV. It is best applied to clean skin as the first layer of a morning skincare routine. Does Vitamin C Help With Hyperpigmentation?

"Vitamin C has a two-pronged approach for helping with hyperpigmentation. First, by reducing the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme essential for making eumelanin and second, by reducing the reactive oxygen species generated from pollution, which can contribute to excess hyperpigmentation and inflammatory hyperpigmentation."

How Long Until I See Results From Vitamin C?

"Think of vitamin C as a way of maintaining luminous, even skin rather than a “treatment” for hyperpigmentation. If you do have dark spots, treat hyperpigmentation first, then use vitamin C to maintain the results. It takes several months of consistent use to see improvement. Remember to be patient; avoid using too many products at the same time, and, as always, sun protection is a must."

What Ingredients Should I Avoid Using With Vitamin C?

"Avoid combining vitamin C with retinoids or strong exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) in the same routine initially, as this can destabilise it and increase irritation risk. Benzoyl peroxide can also cause vitamin C to oxidise, making it less effective. To be safe, you should introduce actives separately, alternating mornings and evenings."

The Formula

Whilst I like to use this to amp up my makeup, it's a skincare product through and through. Made with the brand's Glazing Milk formula, it has a lightweight, milky texture and is packed with ceramides, vitamin E and glycerin to hydrate and boost the skin's barrier.

Even if you don't have particularly dry skin, I personally think this is a great addition to your skincare routine, as it adds an extra level of glow and hydration. As someone with relatively oily skin, I've never found the formula too thick or greasy.

The Shades

The key thing separating this product from the original Glazing Milk is the subtle, pearlescent shimmer. There are four shades available, from a pearly pink to a rich bronze. Shades 01 and 02 are described as sheer, milky bases, whereas shades 03 and 04 have added tints for a warm glow.

At the moment, I'm using shade 02; however, during the winter months, I can see myself switching to 01 for my everyday makeup look.

The Application

What I love about the Highlight Milk is how versatile it is. There are so many ways to use it, but let me talk you through a few of my favourites. If I'm having a "no makeup" makeup day, I apply this all over the skin before going in with concealer and a bit of cream bronzer. Just using these three products makes a huge difference to my complexion, and it's actually the makeup look that earns me the most compliments on my skin.

However, if I feel like getting a bit dressed up and want a matching makeup look, I mix a few drops of this into my foundation, and the results are always 10/10. The Results

Honestly? I can't get enough of this product. I've tried countless illuminating primers, but what I love about this is that the glow looks completely natural. As an esthetician, I notice that some skincare questions come up time and time again, no matter what time of year it is. Alongside how to treat hormonal acne and what to do about enlarged pores, one of the topics clients are often most embarrassed to ask about is bum acne. The reality? It may not be visible, but it's actually incredibly common.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that every bump on your bottom is actually acne. While it can certainly happen, many cases are caused by something else entirely, which is why copying your facial acne routine onto your body doesn't always deliver the results you're hoping for. Identifying what's really going on is the first—and arguably most important—step towards clearer skin.

The good news is that once you understand the cause, bum breakouts are often very manageable. A few targeted skincare ingredients, some simple tweaks to your daily routine and avoiding some common mistakes can make a noticeable difference. And as with most skin concerns, consistency is far more important than reaching for the strongest treatment you can find.

Ahead, dermatologist Sonia Khorana has helped me to answer the questions I'm asked most frequently by clients, from what actually causes bum acne to the ingredients that are genuinely worth using and the everyday habits that could be making flare-ups better—or worse.

What Causes Bum Acne?

The first thing I explain to clients is that what they're calling "bum acne" often isn't acne at all. According to Khorana, "It's important to remember, it may not be true acne." In many cases, the culprit is actually folliculitis—an inflammation of the hair follicles that's commonly triggered by bacteria, yeast, sweat, or friction. It tends to appear as small red bumps, sometimes with a whitehead, clustered around individual hair follicles.

Another common possibility is keratosis pilaris (KP), which Khorana explains is "caused by a buildup of keratin that plugs hair follicles. It's harmless and isn't caused by poor hygiene." These bumps are typically rougher, flesh-coloured and less inflamed than acne.

With that said, true acne can develop on the buttocks too. "When true acne does occur on the buttocks, it develops in the same way as facial acne, with a combination of excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria clogging the pores," says Khorana. Although this is less common than on the face or back due to there being fewer oil glands in the area, it does happen.

The type of bumps you're experiencing can also offer clues. Folliculitis usually presents as red papules and pus-filled pustules around hair follicles, while true acne is more likely to include blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed pimples. If you're noticing painful boils, recurring lumps, or tunnels beneath the skin, Khorana advises seeking medical advice, as this could indicate another condition, such as hidradenitis suppurativa. Ultimately, identifying the underlying cause is key, as the right treatment depends entirely on what's causing the bumps in the first place.

What Products Are Best for Butt Acne?

For inflamed folliculitis or true acne, Khorana recommends a body wash containing benzoyl peroxide. As she explains, "A body wash containing benzoyl peroxide can help reduce bacteria on the skin and is often useful for inflamed or pustular breakouts." I often recommend leaving it on the skin for a minute or two before rinsing to maximise its effectiveness, but it's worth remembering that benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels and clothing if not thoroughly rinsed off.

Another ingredient I regularly recommend is salicylic acid. Khorana explains, "Exfoliating ingredients such as salicylic acid help to keep follicles clear by dissolving oil and debris within the pore," while AHAs such as glycolic acid and lactic acid "gently exfoliate and give you smoother skin texture over time." If the bumps are actually keratosis pilaris rather than acne, she recommends urea-based body lotions, explaining that they're "helpful for softening rough, bumpy skin and reducing keratin build-up." I also encourage clients to choose fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturisers to support the skin barrier without clogging follicles. Above all, I couldn't agree more with Khorana's final piece of advice: "Ultimately, consistency matters more than intensity."

What Helps Butt Acne?

In my experience, the products you use are only one part of the picture. Lifestyle habits can have just as much influence on whether bum breakouts improve or keep coming back, particularly if the underlying cause is folliculitis rather than true acne.

According to Khorana, "Lifestyle habits play a big role in either triggering or helping to prevent 'bum acne,' which is most often related to folliculitis rather than true acne." She explains that "staying in sweaty workout clothes for too long, wearing tight or non-breathable fabrics, prolonged sitting (which increases heat and friction), and not showering soon after exercise" can all create "an environment of warmth, moisture, and friction that can irritate hair follicles and encourage breakouts." These are some of the most common triggers I discuss with clients, particularly those who exercise regularly or spend long periods sitting at a desk.

Fortunately, a few simple changes can make a noticeable difference. Khorana advises "showering immediately after sweating, wearing loose, breathable clothing, regularly changing out of damp clothes, and gently exfoliating a few times a week to prevent buildup of dead skin cells" to help minimise flare-ups. Ultimately, it's these small, consistent habits that make the biggest difference over time.

1. Topicals Clearly Acne Body Mist

If you’re dealing with breakouts in areas that are difficult to treat (i.e., your bum), a mist format can be a game-changer—and this is one of the most effective I’ve tried. It uses a blend of exfoliating and antibacterial ingredients to help clear existing blemishes, prevent new ones from forming, and improve the appearance of post-acne marks over time. I love that it’s so easy to incorporate into a routine: simply spray it onto clean, dry skin and let it absorb without any rubbing or mess. It feels lightweight and refreshing rather than like a traditional acne treatment, making it much easier to stay consistent with.

2. Naturium The Energiser Mandelic Acid Body Wash

Mandelic acid is one of my favourite ingredients for body breakouts because it's effective without being overly aggressive, and this cleanser showcases exactly why. It gently lifts away dead skin cells and helps keep hair follicles clear, making it particularly useful if your bumps are caused by congestion or folliculitis. I also appreciate that it creates a satisfying lather without leaving my skin feeling squeaky clean or uncomfortable afterwards. Over time, I've found it helps smooth rough texture as well as reduce the frequency of flare-ups.

3. Dr Sam's Flawless Neutralising Gel Roller

One of the biggest advantages of this treatment is how easy it is to use. The roll-on applicator makes it simple to target individual areas without getting product all over your hands, and the lightweight gel absorbs almost instantly without leaving any sticky residue. I like using it after showering on areas that are prone to recurring breakouts, and it's particularly good at calming angry, inflamed spots before they fully develop. It layers well underneath moisturiser too, making it easy to slot into your existing bodycare routine.

Whenever I feel a deeper spot starting to develop, this is the treatment I reach for. The concentrated gel delivers active ingredients directly where they're needed, helping reduce redness and congestion without drying out the surrounding skin. It can be used on both face and body—I find it works particularly well on stubborn individual blemishes that seem determined to linger. Because a little goes a long way, one tube also lasts surprisingly well.

5. Clinisoothe Skin Purifier

If your skin is easily irritated or you find traditional acne treatments too harsh, this is a brilliant alternative. Rather than relying on exfoliating acids, this gentle hypochlorous acid mist works to support the skin’s natural defences, helping to calm redness, reduce irritation, and keep bacteria levels balanced. I particularly like it after workouts, shaving, or whenever my skin feels more reactive, as it feels instantly refreshing without any stinging or dryness. It’s not an overnight quick fix, but with consistent use it can help create a healthier skin environment that’s less prone to recurring flare-ups.

Many people skip moisturiser when treating body acne, but I always recommend using one—and this formula is ideal. The lightweight cream combines hydrating ingredients with PHAs, so you're gently exfoliating while supporting the skin barrier at the same time. With regular application, it leaves skin noticeably smoother and softer while helping reduce the rough, congested texture that can lead to breakouts.

I don't think body masks get nearly enough attention, and this is one I frequently recommend to anyone struggling with congestion on their body. The mineral-rich clay helps absorb excess oil and impurities while leaving skin feeling incredibly clean and refreshed. I like using it once a week as a deeper treatment when my skin feels particularly congested, and it always leaves the area looking smoother (as well as clearer) afterwards.

“An SPF stick can be a useful addition to a sun care routine, particularly for targeted application and topping up protection throughout the day. If you have oily skin, I’d recommend giving Avène’s Cleanance Mattifying Aqua-Gel a try. With a cooling gel formula that aims to reduce shine by up to 50%, this moisturiser is perfect for those with acne and blemish-prone skin. The water gel texture absorbs into the skin instantly without heaviness, allowing those with oily skin to get the benefits of hydration without the risk of clogging pores. As someone with dry skin, I can only really see myself reaching for this on those really hot days when I want something that feels weightless and breathable; however, I can guarantee that someone with oily or combination skin will fall in love with this formula.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm always on the hunt for mature-skin product suggestions due to how nourishing they are on my dry skin. Caudalie’s Premier Cru rich cream is an anti-ageing formula infused with TET8™, a patented technology that aims to blur fine lines and wrinkles, restore firmness and reduce dark spots. I personally love how thick this nourishing cream is; however, if you have normal to oily skin, there’s also a non-rich cream iteration available that will give you all of the skincare benefits without the risk of clogging pores.

If you’re well-versed in the skincare world, it should come as no surprise that Caudalie is in this round-up twice. In fact, I’d been using the brand’s Vinoperfect range years before I decided to try the Premier Cru cream. Using viniferine, a plant derivative that’s over 60 times more effective than vitamin C, this lightweight gel formula effectively reduces dark spots without causing the irritation that vitamin C is known for amongst those with sensitive skin. I typically shy away from anything that claims to reduce hyperpigmentation, due to the fear of causing a breakout; however, rest assured, this formula remains gentle on eczema-prone skin despite the active ingredients included.

A face cream that also doubles as sun protection is a great way to streamline your skincare routine, and Bioderma’s Pigmentbio SPF50+ face cream is a brightening formula that will leave your skin looking glowy and healthy. With LumiReveal™ technology that regulates melanin, this SPF is an effective dark spot remover for those of us with hyperpigmentation. So, how does this magical stuff work? As the name suggests, the formula is infused with red and black tea extracts, alongside an active bio-cherry fruit essence. These extracts temporarily "tan" the skin, adding a bronzed finish whilst also smoothing the complexion. As mentioned, this product doesn't need time to develop. Instead, it comes with a handy guide colour so you know exactly what sort of finish you're getting. In my opinion, this takes all the stress out of using fake tan. The product currently comes in one universal shade, but would add more of a warm, sun-kissed effect to darker skin tones, rather than a very deep tan. I'd love to see a wider range of shades from the brand in the future.

The Application

There are lots of ways to apply By Terry Tea to Tan, but after rigorous testing, I believe I've found the best method for the most natural finish. When it comes to the face, I like to spray a small amount onto the back of my hand, then take a flat bronzing brush and buff the product into my skin. You can apply it all over or focus on the areas where the sun naturally hits, such as the tops of the cheeks, nose and forehead. If I'm tanning my décolletage, I tend to use a similar method. But if I'm doing larger areas of my body, such as my legs, I like to spray it directly onto the skin and use a large brush or my fingertips to blend it in.

The Results

After a week spent inside recovering from a nasty throat infection, it's safe to say that I wasn't looking my best. There might have been a heatwave in London, but my complexion would have anyone thinking it's the middle of winter. For my grand return to the office, I knew I could rely on By Terry's Tea to Tan to bring my skin back to life. Anyone who knows me will attest to the fact that I lean towards the finer things in beauty. For the most part, my skincare routine, makeup bag and shower shelf comprise luxury beauty products. Like any beauty editor, I'll never stop banging on about the importance of wearing SPF, and for good reason. It's the one skincare rule dermatologists agree is non-negotiable because the damage caused by UV rays is often invisible until months (or even years) later.

Whilst you might associate sun damage with holidays abroad, even years of basking in the British sunshine can leave their mark. From stubborn hyperpigmentation and fine lines to a loss of firmness, the effects of UV exposure have a habit of catching up with you.

The good news? There’s plenty you can do to prevent further damage and improve what’s already there. We asked a consultant dermatologist and founder of Self London, Dr Anjali Mahto, to reveal the six most common signs of sun damage, what they really mean for your skin and the best ways to treat them.

1. Hyperpigmentation & Sunspots 

If you've noticed little dark patches or sun spots appear on your face, hands and chest, Dr Mahto says this is the result of excess melanin production and appears in these areas as that's where cumulative exposure is highest.

She adds, "Prevention through daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential, but for existing spots, ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide and azelaic acid can fade them gradually." However, she caveats: "Stubborn, deeper pigmentation usually requires professional treatment like BBL, which targets melanin directly at the depth where it actually lives."

2. Dull, Rough Skin

Skin that's lost its glow faster than the sunshine disappears after a British heatwave? "UV damage breaks down collagen and elastin, causing the skin to lose its smooth, reflective quality and feel sandpapery," reveals Dr Mahto.

She recommends consistently using a retinoid and exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) as they can improve surface texture over weeks. "For more significant textural damage, laser resurfacing delivers faster, more meaningful results by stimulating collagen remodelling."

3. Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Fine lines are often one of the first signs that years of UV exposure are catching up with your skin. "Whilst they're a natural part of ageing, spending time in the sun without adequate protection can speed up the process, meaning wrinkles appear earlier and become more pronounced," explains Dr Mahto. "Collagen degradation creates visible creasing, particularly around the eyes and mouth where the skin is thinnest," she adds.

Yep, here comes the R word again. "Topical retinoids help prevent further damage and can produce modest improvement," advises Dr Mahto.

4. Redness & Broken Capillaries 

For anyone who deals with rosacea, this one will come as no surprise. "Sun exposure damages blood vessels, causing persistent flushing and visible broken capillaries," reveals Dr Mahto.

"Whilst facial sunscreen use and anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide can reduce redness, treatments like BBL selectively target these vessels and close them off, providing lasting improvement that skincare cannot achieve," she adds.

5. Loss of Firmness & Elasticity

UV-induced elastin degradation means the skin loses its ability to bounce back; what used to snap back now stays creased. Dr Mahto says, "This is difficult to address topically because elastin regeneration in adult skin is minimal. Treatments like HALO that trigger controlled injury and fibroblast stimulation can restore some elasticity by promoting collagen and elastin remodelling."

Topically, peptides are your best bet as they can act as chemical messengers that signal skin cells to build new elastin and collagen fibers. At the same time, other types block the enzymes that break down these essential support proteins.

6. "Thickened" Skin

If your skin is starting to look a little leathery, it might be time to pay attention. "Chronic sun exposure causes the skin to thicken unevenly and lose its natural luminosity, taking on a weathered appearance. This requires a multi-pronged approach: strict sunscreen going forward, retinoids for ongoing cellular turnover and potentially in-clinic treatments to remove damaged layers and stimulate renewal," advises Dr Mahto.

If you have oily skin, I’d recommend giving Bioderma’s Dry Touch Sunscreen a try. Formulated with mattifying powders to soak up excess oil and a cellular bioprotection patent to protect the skin against premature photo-ageing, this water-resistant SPF melts into the skin without leaving behind a white cast or greasy residue. This makes it ideal for those with both oily and acne-prone skin, who often have trouble with heavier sunscreen formulas, especially when temperatures rise.

I often find myself looking for mature-skin product suggestions due to how nourishing they are. As I mentioned above, an SPF that effectively protects me from the sun and treats my skin concerns at the same time will always get a yes from me. And Avène’s Anti-Pigmentation sunscreen does just that. Packed with azelaic acid to target acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation, as well as iron oxides, which help to ward off the high-energy visible light that causes dark spots, this formula has been praised for its ability to even out skin tones and reduce further hyperpigmentation. I have to admit, I haven’t used it long enough to see the full skincare benefits; however, its glowy and hydrating formula is enough for me to continue using it.

6. SVR Sun Secure Blur SPF50+ Perfecting Mousse-Primer

Finding an SPF to sit under your makeup without pilling can be a challenge, but luckily, SVR’s Perfecting Mousse-Primer is a hybrid formula that allows you to both protect and prime your skin. Not only is the mousse texture extremely fun to apply, but it sits beautifully under my foundation, meaning I don't have to worry about flaking or dry patches. I do have to note that it’s not fragrance-free, which might be an issue for some, but as someone with sensitive, eczema-prone skin, this did not cause me any issues.

7. Caudalie Invisible High Protection Stick SPF50

An SPF stick is one of my go-to ways to top up my sun protection when I’m on the go around the city. Enriched with nourishing grape seed oil and cocoa seed butter, Caudalie’s Invisible High Protection Stick is moisturising without feeling sticky or greasy. It has a clear consistency, almost like a lip balm and keeps my skin soft and moisturised while providing a smooth, invisible finish. When I have a full-coverage base on, it can disturb the products on my face slightly, so this product is best for no-makeup or light makeup days.

8. Nuxe Sun Oil Gold Shimmer SPF50

An SPF oil is my go-to sunscreen formula in summer, when I want something that doesn’t leave a white cast on my body, and Nuxe’s Sun Oil Gold Shimmer SPF 50 gives me this, plus a shimmery, high-shine finish that’s reminiscent of being on a sun-soaked getaway. It has the most gorgeous true gold finish, which blends in with my deeper skin, but this formula will work for medium and light skin tones as well. And if that doesn't convince you, then let it be known that it also smells incredible, with notes of sweet orange, tiaré flower and vanilla.

What Is an SPF?

Consultant dermatologist, Dr Mary Sommerlad says, “SPF stands for sun protection factor and is a marker of how much protection a sunscreen formula gives a person from the rays of sunlight that can burn the skin and contribute to skin cancer formation, known as ultraviolet B (UV-B). In the UK, SPF is usually given as a number, such as 30 or 50. This number indicates that, when sunscreen is applied correctly, your skin takes 30 or 50 times longer to burn than it would without protection. As the amount of UVB reaching the skin varies by time of day, it may be simpler to think of SPF 30 as blocking about 97% of UVB rays from affecting the skin, whilst SPF 50 blocks around 98%. This difference is important, especially if you have had skin cancer, work outdoors or have outdoor hobbies."

Add in sweat, makeup breakdown and friction, and you've got a recipe for congestion and irritation."

6 Beauty Tips for Surviving the Summer Heat

1. Avoid Heavy Creams

A big fan of Charlotte Tilbury Magic cream, it's something I have to press pause on during a heat wave. Dr Mahto tells me that's because 'heavy creams sit on the skin uncomfortably.' Instead she clarifies more often that not, 'a gentle cleanser and a non-greasy SPF are enough'. Good to know.

2. Protect Your Barrier

Many people assume their skincare products have stopped working during a heatwave, but the picture isn't quite accurate. "In reality, it's often the air conditioning drawing moisture out of the skin," reveals Dr Gizem Seymenoglu, a London-based medical aesthetic practitioner.

She adds, "As humidity drops, the skin loses water more easily, leaving it feeling tight and dry. Those who have sensitive skin are much more vulnerable to moisture loss in air-conditioned environments."

Whilst it's tempting to reach for more skincare products, supporting the skin barrier is key; with a simple routine, regular moisturising and staying hydrated are usually far more effective.

3. Skip Actives

Along with many of you, retinol and acids are part and parcel of my skincare routine, but Dr Mahto advises giving them a miss, especially if your skin is reacting to the heat. Instead, I've been reaching for niacinamide-based products, which help boost radiance, minimise the appearance of pores and strengthen the skin barrier. Bakuchiol is also a plant-based alternative to retinol that is well suited to sensitive skin and is proven to work in the same way, minus the irritation.

4. Always Reapply SPF

So many people apply SPF as part of their morning routine and then completely forget about it for the rest of the day, but sun protection isn't a one-and-done step. When the UV index is high, SPF is even more vital. "A mist makes reapplication incredibly easy, especially if you're wearing makeup," advises skincare expert Anel Lamaine, founder of Skin By Anel Lamine.

5. Keep Your Moisturiser in the Fridge

This easy hack is totally worth is as it feels so satisfying applying a cool gel moisturiser or sheet mask to my face. Dr Mahto also adds that it's worth "using a cool compress in the evening", and I'm a fan of keeping my cryo tools in the fridge, massaging them over my face and down my neck before I go to bed.

6.  Apply Skincare ASAP After Showering

"One of the most impactful skincare habits in summer is the one most people skip: applying a barrier-supportive product immediately after cleansing or showering, before the skin has fully dried," says Dr Athalye. "That short window is when the skin is most receptive to repair." She adds, "Look for plant-based oils with a fatty acid profile compatible with the skin’s own lipid structure, such as coconut oil or manuka leaf oil. These support barrier repair whilst helping to address the bacterial environment on the skin’s surface that can interrupt healing."

Every year, without fail, my legs emerge from winter hibernation looking exactly as you'd expect after spending the majority of the year hiding beneath jeans, tights and thick socks. 1. This Works Perfect Legs Skin Miracle

When I think of tinted leg serums, it's this one that springs to mind first as one of the OG formulas in this category. If you are as averse to fake tan as I am, then this is a great product to start with, as it feels almost like applying a body lotion. It's silky, lightweight, and there's plenty of blending time with it so you can really work it into the skin before it sets without rushing. Rather than a total colour transformation, it simply makes my legs look a bit healthier—kind of like I've spent a long weekend outdoors in the sunshine.

I also appreciate how comfortable it feels on the skin throughout the day. Even during the recent hot weather, it never felt sticky or heavy, and there were no noticeable streaks or patches either. I was nervous about it leaving marks on my clothing or furniture (especially considering how damn sweaty I've been during the heat), but it stayed put until I washed it off at the end of the day. I really wasn't expecting to like this product much, as it looked like a bit of a faff to apply and reminded me of a classic tanning product. However, not only is this incredibly easy to spritz on when you're in a rush, but the colour payoff is incredible. The spray means that you can cover large areas really quickly before buffing it straight in with a tanning mitt. And compared with some of the more subtle formulas, this delivered a really strong bronze colour to my legs immediately. I also liked that you have the option of shaking up the bottle for a glowy shine or leaving the formula still for a matte finish. The only thing to be wary of is that the mist application means it can get a little messy. It's worth popping a towel underfoot to catch any overspray.

"Retinoids, including retinol, don't directly brighten the skin but accelerate skin cell turnover, helping pigmented cells shed more quickly while improving skin texture and fine lines," says Mr Al Janabi.

Finally, "Chemical exfoliants such as glycolic acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid help remove dead skin cells that contribute to a dull complexion. Used appropriately, they can enhance the effectiveness of your other brightening products," he notes.

My review: I'm a big fan of Skin Rocks in general, but for me this is a standout product. I've been using it since it launched in 2024, and I love how it protects skin as well as brightens over time. It is well formulated in that it doesn't cause any irritation, and it has a creamy, almost lotion consistency, which is perfect for those who don't dig a traditional serum-y texture. If you're looking for a decent multi-tasker, then this is it.

3. Medik8 Crystal Retinal

Why it's the best: Medik8's Crystal Retinal has earned cult status for good reason. Rather than using traditional retinol, it contains retinaldehyde (retinal), a next-generation vitamin A that's proven to work up to 11 times faster than retinol while remaining surprisingly gentle on the skin. Available in a range of strengths, it allows you to gradually increase potency as your skin builds tolerance, making it one of the most user-friendly retinoid systems on the market. If you're looking to attack fine lines, blemishes and dullness at the same time, then look no further.

My review: If I could recommend just one retinoid to someone, it would be this. The step-up system takes the guesswork out of using vitamin A, and despite its potency, I've found it far less irritating than many retinol formulas I've tried. Within a few months, my skin looked smoother, brighter and more refined, with a noticeable improvement in post-blemish marks and overall texture. It's one of those products that quietly transforms your skin the longer you use it.

4. Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment

Why it's the best: Sunday Riley Good Genes remains one of the benchmark lactic acid treatments thanks to its ability to deliver noticeably smoother, brighter skin without the sting often associated with stronger exfoliating acids. The silky texture layers well with other skincare, and the formula combines exfoliation with hydrating and soothing ingredients, making it a favourite for those seeking radiance and refined texture.

My review: I won't lie, I was disappointed when Sunday Riley replaced glycolic acid with lactic acid in their hero product. Happily, though, the re-reformulated (it was lactic, then glycolic, now back to lactic again) version still works an absolute treat, delivering the same smooth, radiant-looking results I've come to expect.

5. Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

Why it's the best: Often regarded as the gold standard of vitamin C serums, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic has built its reputation on science rather than hype. Its patented formula combines 15% pure L-ascorbic acid with vitamin E and ferulic acid, a trio that works synergistically to neutralise free radicals, protect against environmental damage and dial up your glow. Beyond this. it helps improve the appearance of fine lines, firmness and uneven skin tone, making it one of the few vitamin C serums with decades of clinical research behind it.

My review: This is one of those products that lives up to its legendary status. Yes, it's expensive, but I've yet to find another vitamin C serum that delivers the same healthy, lit-from-within glow. The distinctive hot dog-like scent isn't for everyone, but it's a small price to pay for one of the hardest-working antioxidant serums on the market.

1. TLC Melt Hydrating Balm Cleanser

I love a cleansing balm, and I was so excited to get my hands on this. The sweet, fresh, uplifting scent made the boring task of taking off my makeup a whole lot more fun. Plus, when applied to the skin, this balm melts into a nourishing oil, which means it removes even the most stubborn of mascaras. After washing it off, I couldn't believe how soft my skin felt. For a first cleanse, you really can't go wrong with this.

2. Soft Reset Foaming Cleanser

For my second cleanse, I went in with the Soft Reset Foaming Cleanser. I'll be honest, I don't usually like cleansing foams, as I personally find them very drying, but thanks to a cocktail of nourishing ingredients, I didn't experience that tight, stripped feeling after using this. It did take me a little while to get used to using the pink foam (yes, it's pink!), but I have to say, there's something about the colour and the scent that makes this product so joyous to use. It might not be a cleanser I reach for every single day, but when I need a boost, it's this I'm choosing.

3. Triple Up Hydrating 3-in-1 Toner & Primer

I was a bit confused by this product at first, but once I got the hang of how (and when) to use it, I pretty much fell in love. I tend to apply a few pumps before my moisturiser or before applying my makeup, as it adds the dewiest, juiciest effect to the skin. Plus, it acts as an extra hit of hydration on those days when your complexion is feeling a bit dry or dull. The nourishing ingredients and lightweight formula get top marks from me.

4. Sunshine Dew Glow Essence

As soon as I saw the name of this, I couldn't wait to try it. Anything that promises a dewy glow is right up my street. Similar to the product above, this is a great one to apply before makeup, as it adds this really beautiful, naturally radiant finish to the skin. Thanks to the nourishing texture, it also allows any foundation or concealer to glide on smoothly. I can definitely see this becoming a staple in my daily routine.

5. Cloud Bounce Hydrating Moisturiser

Last but not least, let's talk about moisturiser. I always struggle with moisturiser, as I have dry skin, but it also gets clogged easily, so I can't use anything too rich. In my opinion, this product is the perfect middle ground. The combination of baobab, glycerin and squalane left my skin feeling silky soft, and thanks to the lightweight, cloud-like texture, it didn't feel heavy or greasy to use—10/10 from me.

If you've ever noticed a tiny white bump sitting stubbornly beneath the skin—most commonly around the eyes, cheeks or forehead—there's a good chance you've encountered milia. Unlike acne, blackheads or congestion, these small bumps don't typically respond to your usual blemish treatments, nor can they be easily squeezed away. In fact, attempting to do so often causes more harm than good.

Whilst milia are completely harmless, they're one of the most common skincare concerns I'm asked about as an esthetician. Their appearance can be frustrating, especially when they seem to linger for months or even years without changing. Adding to the confusion, many people mistake them for whiteheads or blocked pores, leading them to reach for products that aren't actually effective.

The good news is that milia are incredibly common and, in many cases, can be prevented or improved with the right skincare approach. Understanding why they form is the first step. Factors such as skin cell turnover, product choice and even individual skin characteristics can all play a role in whether you're prone to developing them.

To find out exactly what milia are, why some people seem to get them more frequently than others, and the best ways to treat and prevent them, we spoke to dermatologist Sonia Khorana. Ahead, find what you need to know about these persistent little bumps, and the ingredients and treatments that can help keep them at bay.

What Are Milia?

"Milia are small, white or yellowish bumps that form when keratin becomes trapped beneath the skin's surface," explains Khorana. "They are harmless and common around the eyes and cheeks." Although they're often mistaken for whiteheads, milia are actually tiny cysts filled with keratin, a protein naturally found in the skin, hair and nails. Unlike acne, they don't develop because of excess oil or bacteria, which is why traditional spot treatments rarely make a difference. They can occur at any age and are particularly noticeable in delicate areas of the face where the skin is thinner. Whilst they pose no health risk, many people choose to address them for cosmetic reasons.

What Causes Milia?

According to Khorana, "Milia occur when dead skin cells and keratin become trapped beneath the skin. They can develop naturally or can be associated with skin damage, heavy occlusive skincare products or reduced skin cell turnover." Essentially, when the skin doesn't shed dead cells efficiently, they can become trapped beneath the surface and harden into the small cysts we recognise as milia.

Genetics may also play a role. "Some people seem naturally more prone to milia due to differences in their skin and how it sheds dead skin cells," she adds. "They may also be more likely to develop if they use richer skincare products or have skin that is slower to renew itself." This is why some people can use rich eye creams for years without issue, whilst others develop milia seemingly overnight.

How to Get Rid of Milia

The most effective long-term approach is to encourage healthy skin cell turnover. "Ingredients that support skin cell turnover can help reduce the appearance of milia over time. Retinoids and gentle exfoliating acids, like lactic acid or PHAs, can help encourage the skin to shed dead cells more effectively," says Khorana. Prevention is equally important. She advises avoiding "very heavy or occlusive skincare products, especially around the eye area", and warns against picking or squeezing milia, which can irritate the skin and increase the risk of scarring.

For existing milia that won't budge, professional extraction is often the quickest solution. "Milia can be professionally removed by a dermatologist or trained therapist, typically using a sterile needle or small blade to create a tiny cut in the skin before extracting the trapped keratin," she explains. "The procedure is pretty quick and causes minimal pain."

As an aesthetician, milia is one of the most common concerns I encounter with my clients, particularly around the eyes and cheeks. For this edit, I drew on both my professional experience treating clients prone to milia and my own testing of these products over several months. For a beauty editor, I’m somewhat of a sceptic when it comes to techy skincare tools. I listen to my fellow editors (and dermatologists!) rave all day about at-home lasers like the Lyma Laser Pro and microcurrent devices like the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro, all promising “glass skin” and snatched jawlines. Still, I shake my head in disbelief. Why? Because, partly, it all sounds too good to be true. But mostly, it’s because I’m scared of them, and I’m not ashamed to admit it!

As someone who grew up fearing sunburns and slathering on the sunscreen, and who never touched her hands to her face in middle school for fear of developing pimples, it sounded antithetical to press an electronic device against my skin and hope it didn’t fry my brain. But something about the Omnilux Contour Mask (a popular LED mask) caught my attention—and no, it didn’t totally have to do with the fact that Bella Hadid and Jasmine Tookes are fans. That’s only part of the reason.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

If you’re interested in learning more about this device, we have to start with the main event: red light therapy. These low-level light wavelengths are used in skincare treatments for a myriad of reasons—most relating to anti-ageing—and were once only available in a dermatologist’s office or clinic. But with the ever-growing category of red light tools, including handheld wands, showerheads and vibration plates, it’s easier than ever to take these techy treatments home.

“LED masks use specific wavelengths of light to stimulate biological processes in the skin without causing injury or downtime through a process called photobiomodulation,” board-certified dermatologist and director of Cosmetic Dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care Kseniya Kobets, MD, tells Who What Wear. “Red light (around 633 nm) helps calm inflammation and stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin, while near-infrared light (around 830 nm) penetrates deeper and may help support tissue repair and collagen production,” she explains. Omnilux’s Contour mask is essentially a supercharged, award-winning, FDA-cleared mask for all of your skin-softening, cellular repairing, and collagen-producing needs.

To see for myself, I tested the product for 13 days—though I now plan on wearing it for much longer. Keep reading for my full review.

What Is the Omnilux Face Mask?

The Omnilux Contour Face Mask is a flexible, strap-on mask that you wear for 10 minutes (it will automatically shut off after the time is up, so you never worry about accidentally wearing it for too long) for three to five days a week. While the brand states that results are most noticeable after four to six weeks of use, I was able to spot a few differences in just two weeks of wear. What results, you may ask? Allow me to explain.

This mask utilises a mix of eye-safe red and near-infrared light bulbs inside the silicone face. The FDA-cleared device offers a noninvasive, dermatologist-recommended 10-minute treatment that stimulates collagen development and repair at the cellular level. With consistent and long-term use, wearers will experience the minimisation of fine lines and wrinkles, tauter skin and a smoother complexion.

“The goal isn’t dramatic lifting or wrinkle removal but gradual improvements in skin quality—including smoother texture, softer fine lines, reduced redness and healthier-looking skin with consistent use,” Kobets explains. I also found this mask to be great for rosacea, as the cocktail of lights was able to reduce the appearance of my skin’s natural redness within this short testing period. (If you want to target acne, your best bet would be the Omnilux Clear.)

“Omnilux remains one of my go-to recommendations because it uses wavelengths that have some of the strongest supporting data behind them: 633nm red light and 830nm near-infrared light,” she adds. “It has also been around for a long time and was one of the first companies I used for both in-office and at-home LED treatments. It won’t replace in-office procedures, but for patients looking for an at-home option to support collagen, improve skin quality, and maintain results between treatments, I think it’s one of the more credible devices on the market.”

How to Use It

Using the Omnilux mask is so simple it hardly needs explanation—however, I too was overwhelmed by all of the cords, remotes and lengthy instructions manual when I unsheathed my device. So let me break it down for you!

Start by charging the handheld remote (called the battery controller in the instructions) with the provided plug-in. It takes about five to six hours to take a dead battery to a full charge, which you’ll know you’ve reached when three dots glow on the face of the remote. As the battery dwindles (you’ll likely get 10 treatments out of a single charge), the lights will decrease from three to two and so on to keep you up to speed. Just make sure you unplug the remote from the mask as you charge it, as this can cause electrical issues down the line.

From there, simply attach the corded remote to the mask, fasten one strap over your head, and the other around the nape of your neck. When you’ve reached a comfortable position, press the remote’s button down until the red lights kick on. From there, you can rest your eyes, read a book, or go about your day—the LEDs are eye-safe and FDA-cleared, so you don’t have to worry about wearing goggles underneath or squeezing your eyes shut.

My Honest Review

I’m not overly obsessed with skincare tools, but this is one that I’ll start using more frequently. Not only did this serve as a relaxing wind-down ritual before bed, but I genuinely did notice a difference in the firmness, texture and tone of my skin. As a 26-year-old, I’ve started to notice the very minute signs of ageing: whisker-thin fine lines around my eyes, the faintest hint of marionette lines and rosacea. With just two weeks of use, the device has subtly reduced the redness in my cheeks and plumped my skin. I’ve also found this tool to be helpful with the occasional breakout—I wore the Omnilux after developing a pimple, and it decreased the size and tone of the spot within a day.

Who Is the Omnilux Contour Face Mask Good For?

“I think LED masks are best suited for patients looking to improve overall skin quality, support collagen production, reduce mild redness and inflammation and complement a broader skincare or in-office treatment plan,” says Kobets. “They’re also popular after procedures like microneedling or dermaplaning because many patients find them calming.”

Who Should Not Use It?

Kobets recommends that melasma patients refrain from using LED masks. “While red light itself is generally not thought to worsen pigmentation, some LED masks generate a noticeable amount of heat,” she explains. “Heat is a well-recognised trigger for melasma, and I have personally seen some melasma-prone patients report worsening pigmentation with frequent use of heat-generating devices. This is especially important in patients with severe or vascular-predominant melasma, those undergoing hormonal changes such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, or perimenopause, or anyone whose pigmentation is known to flare with exercise, saunas, or heat exposure.”

Final Verdict

In all, I enjoyed adding this device to my routine over the last two weeks, and I plan to continue using it in the future. I saw results in certain areas, like the reduction of redness and the minimisation of blemishes, almost overnight. However, I expect things like fine line reduction and overall plumpness to take some time. After the intended amount of use (four to six weeks, per the brand), I assume that I'll be greeted with much brighter and smoother skin when I look in the mirror.

While I enjoyed having this be part of my evening routine—it gave me 10 solid minutes to unwind—I wouldn't say it's a 100% necessary tool to own, unless you have a spare £350 to donate toward your skincare regime. It's one worth adding if you want an effective tool that's guaranteed to be safe for most skin types.

How does a red light therapy mask like Omnilux Contour compare to an in-office LED treatment?

“In-office LED treatments are generally more powerful, but at-home devices have become much more sophisticated,” says Kobets. “I usually tell patients that professional treatments may provide a stronger dose, but consistency is where at-home devices shine. An LED mask won’t replace lasers, fillers, neuromodulators, ultrasound tightening, or radiofrequency devices, but it can be a useful adjunct for improving skin quality and supporting recovery.”

Of course, collagen supplements can't replace a good skincare routine, a healthy diet or daily SPF application, but they can be a great way to support your skin from the inside out. Skincare such as serums or LED masks can only do so much superficially, and a collagen supplement can help to boost your results from the inside out. To help find the best collagen supplements around, I've rallied the Who What Wear UK editors to try and test different collagen supplements over the past three months. But first, I've enlisted the expertise of Dale Pinnock, 'The Medicinal Chef' and nutritionist, to take us through what we should know about collagen supplements and what to look for.

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is the body's most abundant structural protein. It provides strength and support to tissues, including the skin, joints, bones and blood vessels," says Pinnock. "In the skin, collagen helps maintain firmness, elasticity and hydration. As we age, collagen production naturally declines, contributing to wrinkles, thinning skin and a loss of elasticity. Those concerned with skin ageing, reduced elasticity, dryness or menopausal skin changes are likely to benefit the most," he says.

What Does Research Say About Collagen Supplements?

In the early days of collagen supplements, there was a lot of scepticism around their efficacy. However, growing research is now showing that they can indeed bring benefits to our skin. "In the early days of collagen supplements, I would say it was deserving of that scepticism, but we have moved on light years from those first crude products," says Pinnock. "The evidence has strengthened considerably over the past decade. Multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses have shown that collagen supplementation can improve skin hydration, elasticity and the appearance of fine lines. What's becoming increasingly clear is that the benefits depend not only on the amount of collagen consumed, but also on the type of collagen peptides being delivered and how effectively they are absorbed," he says.

However, a collagen supplement cannot be a replacement for a balanced and varied diet. "Collagen should be viewed as part of a broader healthy ageing strategy that includes a nutrient-rich diet, adequate protein intake, sleep and sun protection," says Pinnock.

"The most exciting developments in this area are not necessarily about taking more collagen, but about delivering the most biologically active collagen peptides in forms the body can efficiently absorb and utilise. It is also worth noting that benefits tend to be enhanced when individuals take other steps to signal collagen synthesis through skin care, etc." In other words, collagen supplements work best when used in conjunction with a good skincare routine, a healthy diet and collagen-inducing treatments.

What to Look For

There are also different forms of collagen to suit different dietary requirements. "Marine collagen is rich in Type I collagen, the main collagen found in skin, making it particularly popular in beauty-focused products," says Pinnock. "Bovine collagen typically contains both Types I and III collagen, which also support connective tissues. Vegan products don't contain collagen itself, but instead provide nutrients that support the body's own collagen production," he says.

However, not all collagen is created equal. "I would look beyond simply 'hydrolysed collagen' and consider the form of collagen being used," says Pinnock. "Smaller bioactive peptides, particularly collagen tripeptides, are attracting significant scientific interest because they appear to be absorbed more efficiently and may stimulate collagen production within the skin more effectively. There is simply more getting where it needs to go to do the job," he says.

Truthfully, I’ve tried a few marine collagen supplements prior and was immediately worried it would taste fishy. But to my surprise, I couldn’t detect it in my morning cappuccino at all. It’s unflavoured, and whilst it does have a subtle aftertaste mixed into water, in stronger flavoured drinks, it’s basically undetectable. I took a teaspoon of the supplement each day, and it easily mixed into my coffee (but it did reduce the froth in my coffee, FYI).

"Ingredients-wise, this marine collagen powder has 500 Dalton-weight peptides, which is the optimal low-molecular weight for effective bioabsorption into the body. I don’t recall an aftertaste or any digestive issues when taking these supplements, and I appreciate that the process wasn’t messy. In fact, it was a relief not to have another pill to remember to take. Because the ampoules were sealed, they were easy to throw in my handbag and take on the go.

"Three months later, I definitely feel like my nails are stronger and my skin bounces back faster when pressed. I didn’t wear much foundation before, and I’ve stopped altogether, in favour of quick swipes of concealer, because my skin seems brighter too. The overall experience felt elevated and more premium than sucking a pouch or stirring powder into water. The only con is that I wasn’t able to pinpoint the supplement as the specific catalyst for these positive changes. The taste wasn’t too pleasant, but it was worth the small sacrifice in knowing that with every sip, I was reaping the benefits of supporting skin elasticity, hydration, barrier strength and long-term wellness.

"What’s more, I can often have somewhat of a sensitive stomach, so whilst I’ll spare you the gory details of previous mishaps, I’m relieved to say that this didn’t upset my digestive tract one iota throughout the entire duration I was trying it. To provide the most comprehensive review, I was quite rigorous throughout the testing process to ensure the most accurate outcome. (It’s here I should note that I was on holiday in Bali for two weeks, which also certainly did contribute to my overall glow and lit-from-within effect.)

"All in all, I did find my skin was brighter and even-toned, my scalp felt healthier, and my nails felt less prone to breaking, so I have no hesitation in recommending this product. I’ve tried collagen powders before, and while I’ve always liked the idea of the potential benefits, the taste has often stopped me from making them part of my daily routine. This one completely surprised me," says managing editor Poppy Nash.

"Rather than having that unmistakable collagen flavour and smell (often described as slightly fishy), it tasted and smelt more like a lighter, less indulgent chocolate milkshake. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I started having it as a pudding after dinner every night! This supplement comes in powder form, with a recommended serving of 35g (around two heaped tablespoons), delivering 10g of collagen peptides alongside 20g of protein per serving. One of the biggest selling points for me is the added protein content. It feels like you’re getting more than just a beauty supplement, which is especially appealing for someone like me who generally struggles to get enough protein in their diet.

"I mixed mine with milk every day and found it blended really easily, with no chalky texture or annoying residue left at the bottom of the glass. I usually used my coffee machine milk frother—which I’m not entirely convinced the machine appreciated!—but it did the job perfectly. If you’re using just a spoon, expect to put in a little more effort.

"After using it consistently, I started noticing small but welcome changes: my skin looked clearer and bouncier, and my nails felt noticeably less brittle. I’m definitely planning to keep taking it, especially as I’m getting married later this year and want my skin to continue improving. The packaging also deserves a mention. I loved that there wasn’t a plastic measuring scoop hidden inside the tub—it’s been removed to reduce unnecessary waste, which feels like a nice touch. Based on my usage, I’d say one tub per month seems accurate, and since a simple tablespoon works for measuring, skipping the extra plastic scoop makes complete sense.

It has a genuinely lovely taste, it's easy to incorporate into a routine, has added protein benefits and is good value for money with thoughtful packaging. However, I’d love a little more guidance around alternative ways to serve it. Can it be added to coffee, or is it best enjoyed as a shake? If you’re not someone who wants to have a ‘milkshake’ every day, you might be better off with a creamer or gel form. Would I buy it again? Absolutely."

7. Absolute Collagen Skin Pro

Editor Review: "I’m always up for trialling a skin supplement. After all, if it’s science-led, research-backed and rigorously tested, what’s the harm in trying? I’m equally happy to try anything that might give me brighter, plumper and generally healthier-looking skin, so I started gulping down Absolute Collagen’s Skin Pro liquid collagen formula to see if it delivered on its promise of a visible transformation," says copy editor, Georgia Seago.

"Each dose comes in a single sachet, and you simply rip off the top and squeeze it into a drink or food to consume. You can also squeeze it straight into your mouth, which is what I do for ease. It has a tropical flavour but also kind of tastes a bit fishy (that’ll be the 8000mg of hydrolysed marine collagen in easy dose), and is a thick orange gel. It’s hardly delicious, but it’s totally fine once you chase it down with water. It also contains 120mg of vitamin C, 120mg of hyaluronic acid, 50ug (micrograms) of biotin and 16mg of niacin: all good stuff that contributes to the increased moisture, strength and overall health of skin, hair and nails. And the added vitamin C turned out to be really handy for me, because I’m taking iron and absorption is known to be boosted if swallowed with vitamin C, so taking my sachet would in turn remind me to pop an iron tablet.

"I didn’t experience any tummy issues with this, even if I took it on an empty stomach, and it was overall really easy to fit into my routine. I haven’t noticed any huge differences, but I’d say my skin does seem more hydrated in general, and there’s a slight improvement in my psoriasis patches, which have appeared less dry and irritated. I also had a few red patches around my nose, which have cleared up. I would keep taking Skin Pro to give it a real chance at improving skin dryness, but for me, the packaging is a barrier. Unfortunately, single-use plastic sachets are pretty wasteful, so I’d love to see the brand figure out a more environmentally friendly option."

When to Take Collagen

Timing is far less important than consistency," says Pinnock. "Whether it's taken in the morning, evening or alongside a meal, the key is daily use. Most of the studies showing benefits have involved continuous supplementation for at least two to three months. I personally take it in the morning or throw it in my post-workout shake," he says.

Retinol is one of those skincare ingredients that tends to sit in a league of its own. If you’ve spent any time in the world of skincare, you’ll know they’re often spoken about in slightly reverent tones, and for good reason. Derived from vitamin A, retinoids work by accelerating skin cell turnover and supporting collagen production, which is why they’re so commonly recommended for concerns like fine lines, uneven texture, breakouts and pigmentation. They essentially encourage the skin to behave more like a "younger" version of itself, gradually refining and resurfacing over time.

But as effective as it is, retinol is not always an easy fit. In reality, it can be quite a commitment, and as an aesthetician, I’m increasingly asked about "retinol alternatives" from clients who either can’t tolerate retinoids or simply don’t want to use them. The adjustment period alone—referred to as retinisation—can involve dryness, peeling, redness, increased breakouts and general sensitivity whilst the skin builds tolerance. And for some people, that isn’t a journey they want to take. Others may not be able to use them at all, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or anyone with a compromised skin barrier or highly reactive skin.

"Someone might avoid retinol because it can cause dryness, redness, peeling or irritation, especially for sensitive skin," says dermatologist Sonia Khorana. "It’s also often avoided during pregnancy, and some people find the increased sun sensitivity or the need for a gradual introduction annoying."

Naturally, this has created a market for so-called "retinol alternatives", a phrase that’s become something of a skincare buzzword in recent years. "A 'retinol alternative' is an ingredient that aims to provide some of retinol’s benefits, such as improving the appearance of fine lines, texture or uneven tone, but with a lower risk of irritation or sensitivity," explains Khorana. "The exact benefits and effectiveness can vary depending on the ingredient, but I don’t personally like this wording as nothing is comparable to retinol."

Whilst "retinol alternative" sounds like an easy and obvious swap, the reality is far more nuanced. Retinoids are unique in how they communicate with skin cells, and very few ingredients truly do the same job in the same way. Instead, what we tend to call alternatives are usually ingredients that support the skin through different pathways—think brightening actives, gentle exfoliants, hydration boosters or antioxidant-rich botanicals that help improve the overall look of skin over time.

So rather than thinking in terms of replacements, it’s more helpful to think in terms of support. The goal isn’t to replicate retinoids exactly, but to find ingredients that deliver visible improvements in tone, texture and radiance in a way that feels comfortable and sustainable for your skin.

1. Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is one of those underrated skincare ingredients that doesn’t always get the hype of retinoids, but absolutely earns its place in a routine. Naturally found in grains like barley and wheat, it’s a multifunctional active that helps gently exfoliate the skin, unclog pores and calm inflammation. It’s particularly well known for improving the appearance of redness, post-breakout marks and uneven skin tone, which is why it’s often recommended for acne-prone or rosacea-prone skin. Whilst it doesn’t act on the skin in the same way as retinoids, it can still deliver some comparable visible improvements in texture and clarity, just through a different and generally more soothing pathway. For those who find retinoids too harsh, azelaic acid often becomes a reliable alternative that's effective without irritating the skin.

2. Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol has become the most recognisable name in the "retinol alternative" conversation. As Khorana explains, "Bakuchiol is the best-known retinol alternative. A plant-derived ingredient that can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone, often with less irritation than retinol." Derived from the babchi plant, it’s often positioned as a gentler option for those who want visible smoothing and brightening benefits without the dryness or peeling associated with retinoids. Whilst it doesn’t interact with retinoid receptors in the same way, it is thought to support collagen production and provide antioxidant benefits, helping skin appear more even and refined over time. It’s especially appealing for sensitive skin types or anyone wanting a slower, more comfort-led approach to skin renewal.

3. Peptides

Peptides are also often included in "retinol alternative" conversations, although again, they don’t actually function in the same way as retinoids. As Khorana explains, "Peptides are not true retinol alternatives, as they work differently, but they help support skin firmness and smoothness by signalling the skin to produce more collagen, and are often well tolerated by sensitive skin, so are great if you can’t use retinol." These short chains of amino acids act as messengers within the skin, encouraging processes that support repair, strength and resilience. Rather than speeding up cell turnover like retinoids, peptides focus on reinforcing the skin’s structure over time, which can help improve the appearance of firmness and smoothness.

4. Niacinamide

Niacinamide is one of the most widely loved multitaskers in skincare, and whilst it isn’t a direct substitute for retinoids, it can help address some overlapping concerns. It supports the skin barrier, improves moisture retention, helps regulate oil production and can gradually refine the appearance of pores and uneven tone. This makes it especially useful for creating a calmer, more balanced complexion over time. "Some botanical extracts are marketed as 'retinol-like' because they may support skin renewal and improve signs of ageing, though the evidence is generally less extensive than for retinol," says Khorana. This is an important distinction, as the effectiveness of botanical ingredients can vary significantly depending on the plant and formulation. Whilst they don’t replicate the cellular activity of retinoids, they can help support overall skin health and radiance, particularly through antioxidant protection and calming effects, making them a softer, supportive option in a routine.

Younger generations are drinking less alcohol (a Drinkaware survey from 2025 showed 49% of young adults choose no- and low-alcohol drinks to moderate their drinking, nearly doubling since 2018), sober-curious culture has gone mainstream and wellness retreats are beginning to resemble medical institutions rather than spas.

The global wellness economy reached $6.8 trillion in 2024 and is projected to be worth $9.8 trillion by 2029, driven largely by preventative health and personalised wellness. This surely proves that wellness is no longer simply the umbrella term for faddy habits or January detoxes; it has expanded to shape how we think about health, and perhaps nowhere is that shift more visible than in the rise of longevity culture.

Like any cultural movement, longevity has its controversial spokespeople. Contentious social-media content comes from divisive figures like Bryan Johnson, a tech entrepreneur, who has become known for his heavily documented "anti-ageing protocol" and for utilising biomarker tracking to supposedly reverse his biological age. At the same time, the likes of Andrew Huberman and Professor Tim Spector marry the worlds of science and wellness via podcasting, whilst Gwyneth Paltrow's wellness platform Goop helped pioneer the idea of wellness as a luxury aspiration long before longevity became fashionable. There is no doubt that many of these people have faced scrutiny for their sometimes polarising messages, but their impact on wider wellness trends is irrevocable.

What’s interesting is how many worlds longevity now overlaps with: beauty, fitness, luxury travel, fashion and, of course, social media. A decade ago, the concept of "anti-ageing" and all its negative connotations sat in the beauty space in the form of products and treatments available only to those who could afford their steep price tags. Today, the luxury angle remains (it's not lost on me that the pursuit of ultimate health and wellbeing requires an awful lot of time and money), but the product is different; it's sleep tracking, blood panels, infrared saunas, cutting-edge supplements, glucose monitoring and recovery therapies. Luxury itself is beginning to look different, too. Where status was once conveyed through monetary excess, it now increasingly looks like restraint: prioritising sleep, drinking less alcohol, tracking recovery, investing in health rather than handbags and booking wellness retreats over party holidays.

This is where places like Clinique La Prairie come in. Perched above Lake Geneva, the legendary Swiss clinic has spent decades attracting royals, celebrities, CEOs and wellness insiders with its highly personalised approach to preventative health and longevity. But what once may have felt OTT and slightly futuristic now feels surprisingly aligned with the current cultural mood.

So, fully invested in the longevity discourse, I decided that 2026 was the time to finally book a stay at Clinique La Prairie to decide for myself if the new world of luxury wellness really does hold all the answers to living a better life. On arrival, what struck me most was how different it felt from traditional luxury wellness. This wasn’t simply about massages and green juices. The atmosphere sits somewhere between a medical clinic, a luxury hotel and a sci-fi-esque wonderland. Conversations revolved around inflammation, recovery, sleep quality, stress management, nutrition and cellular health.

Diagnostics and testing form a central part of the experience, creating a version of wellness that feels highly personalised and deeply data-driven. There’s something both fascinating and slightly confronting about seeing your health translated into metrics and biomarkers. It forces you to think about wellness seriously as long-term functionality. The goal isn’t simply to look better; it’s ultimately about preserving quality of life for as long as possible.

There's still an element of indulgence, though; this is Switzerland, after all. One of the standout treatments during my stay was a facial using La Prairie products, which marries high-end relaxation with results-driven formulas. My skin looked noticeably brighter and more sculpted afterwards, but what made the experience interesting was how seamlessly beauty and longevity were positioned together. At Clinique La Prairie, skincare isn't treated as separate from health; it is part of a much broader conversation around ageing well.

Since returning home, I’ve become far more intentional about my day-to-day habits. Sleep has become a major priority, and I use the Eight Sleep Pod to track recovery and better understand how stress, travel and routine affect my energy levels. I’ve also incorporated more preventative treatments into my routine, including the San Lueur Advanced LED Light Therapy Facial Mask and the Hair Regrowth Helmet, alongside saunas and more regular lymphatic drainage massages. Nutrition-wise, my focus has shifted heavily towards gut health and reducing inflammation. I used to avoid carbs (because I was led to believe they were "bad"), but I now make sure to include healthy grains and balanced carbs in my diet, which has completely changed the way I think about wellness trends that encourage restriction.

Exercise has become less aesthetics-focused, for me, too. I’ve been prioritising strength training and increasing muscle mass, particularly as more research points to muscle health being one of the strongest indicators of healthy ageing. I also take a more targeted approach to supplements now, incorporating daily creatine, omega-3, zinc and vitamin D after discovering I was deficient. Of course, everyone's approach to exercise, diet and supplements should be tailored to their own health and goals, but this is what works for me. At the clinic, I learned that it's not about blindly following what’s fashionable, but about understanding what you actually need.

But perhaps the biggest takeaway from my stay at Clinique La Prairie has been that longevity really isn't about extreme optimisation or chasing immortality, despite what the tech billionaires on social media might have you believe. Beneath all the science and diagnostics, the message is surprisingly simple: the small things done consistently matter most. And maybe that’s why longevity resonates so strongly right now. In a culture historically obsessed with excess and immediacy, it offers something different: the idea of taking care of your future self in the present.
