Season two of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…, is finally here, which means one thing: new fashion looks!

Season one was full to the brim of the fashion-forward and unexpected combinations that we've come to expect from Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda. Carrie's new BFF Lisa Todd Wexley may be a new character, but the looks created for her have already given us a sense of her truly spectacular style. Our first sneak peek of season two has already got the fashion set talking thanks to costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago's of-the-moment styling. Last season, Rogers and Santiago kept Carrie's styling fresh yet true to the original series, combining modern looks with throwback styles that had us reciting, "It's not a bag—it's a baguette." 

The first look at season two of And Just Like That… saw Sarah Jessica Parker wearing a utility boilersuit and carrying a pigeon clutch bag. 

For season two, Rogers and Santiago continue to show off their ability to combine mismatching styles in perfect harmony along with classic, elevated looks that have become synonymous with Carrie Bradshaw. We're sure there is a whole new wave of brilliant Carrie looks on the horizon, as well as impressive 'fits from Charlotte, Miranda, Lisa and yes, even Samantha, who is set to make an appearance in the new season after being absent from series 1.

It was the most memorable scene from the series finale: Carrie Bradshaw coming to the Pont des Arts Bridge in Paris, a spot where she and Big had finally professed their love for each other, to scatter his ashes. 

And it was a poignant moment in more ways than one—because in saying goodbye to Big, we said hello to the old Carrie, who emerged from a chrysalis dressed to the nines in a dazzling neon-orange Valentino Couture ball gown, fuchsia gloves and Timmy Woods Eiffel Tower bag.

Here was the old Carrie we loved; the Carrie we hadn’t seen since Sex and the City; the Carrie who treats her shoes like children, who can put on an outrageously frou-frou dress because she damn well feels like it and wear it as nonchalantly as the rest of us wear jogging bottoms.

But we had to wait a whole series to meet her again.

Let’s face it. Sex and the City had a lot to live up to this time around. When it first hit our screens in 1998, the show was every woman’s must-watch—setting trends, sparking debate, breaking taboos and liberating women. Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte ghosted men before ghosting was even a word. When it came to sex, nothing was off-limits. 

Above all, though, it was a fabulously escapist ode to fashion; a weekly runway of looks we could only dream of wearing. Forget sex—the fashion is still what it’s most remembered for, even 18 years after the final episode. 

So did the new show live up to expectations? To answer that, we need to remember that it comes hot on the heels of a global pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, Me Too and a climate emergency. The three women (sans Samantha, who is much missed) are now in their 50s, no longer fully paid up members of the shop-till-you-drop, no-strings-sex noughties. The characters needed to move on, and so did And Just Like That.

But in making it feel more real, in the great words of Ms. Bradshaw, I couldn’t help but wonder if it lost its way. 

I have two (very small and tenuous) things in common with Carrie. I am also a writer, and I’m in my 50s. Although I don't have an artfully curated vintage/designer wardrobe, I love fashion and have worked in magazines for much of my career.

There aren’t many programmes starring fashionable women of my age, so a reboot felt like progress. And I wanted to be challenged like Sex and the City used to. However, in its eagerness to be relevant, it felt like it was following the issues of the day rather than spearheading them—paying scant lip service to things like gender politics and menopause. 

And when it came to the fashion, there also seemed to be a lag.

Once, Carrie’s closet was the star attraction. Sure, some of it wasn't to everyone’s taste. The men’s ties, flat caps and crocheted baker-boy hats were a step too far for most, including me. But it set trends, and even though we all first poo-pooed a tutu, I still own several, albeit watered-down versions in my wardrobe.

At times in And Just Like That, Carrie’s wardrobe seemed to lose its mojo, leaving other characters to steal the limelight. Ultimate boss Lisa Todd Wexley (aka LTW) blew Carrie out of the water with her accessory game, sweeping into a scene with an exuberant swoosh of a giant beaded necklace. Her safari jacket (episode nine), courtesy of Jeremy Scott for Moschino, had the entire contents of a makeup bag strapped to it—bonkers, yes, but it made you hit the pause button. 

Sure, the fashion in And Just Like That had the hallmarks of classic Carrie—her trick of throwing on a mad, quirky accessory only she could pull off. And making even the edgiest, hardest-to-wear high fashion look easy.

Back too, were the familiar style staples that made Carrie so watchable: clashing prints, pretty vintage silk dresses and intricately embroidered dress coats. Old favourites were pulled from the archive, nodding to our more sustainable times and delighting fans: the "wedding” Manolos, the "Roger” belt and the white Chanel booties. 

But while there were glimmers of the old Carrie—special mentions to her vintage rainbow ’80s Norma Kamali madras blazer (episode four) and delicious bubblegum-pink Carolina Herrera dress (episode three)—there was nothing that made you sit up on your sofa and take notice.

Perhaps her fashion exuberance was dimmed for a reason. Props to the show’s stylists for not giving two hoots about age-appropriate dressing. As all women over 40 know, this is a ridiculous (and slightly insulting) notion. Could they have been nodding to the fact Carrie was a grieving widow? Perhaps so, but like the old Sex and the City, which never let a plot get in the way of a good outfit, I kept on wanting more. 

I read a piece recently where a writer said they would have liked to have seen Carrie in trainers. I disagree. Carrie is heels. 

And therein lies the rub: In the cries for realism, did the fashion escapism get lost? Carrie has always been fabulous, frivolous and, dare I say it, fictional. She is a bright fashion light, a tonic for the times we are living in. She doesn’t need her star dimming. 

Let’s hope this series was just a warm-up. With discussions reportedly in progress to greenlight a second series, it seems like we could be seeing more of Carrie and co. 

And if that big orange dress is a sign of what’s to come, I’m looking forward to it.

5 Standout Style Moments From the Series

1. Seema

Real estate agent Seema Patel brought the sex back. Her raunchy leopard-print Etro trouser suit in episode six and statement gold lamé brought the sex that seemed to be lacking following Samantha’s no-show. 

2. A Nod to the Opening Credits

There were glimmers of Old Carrie in episode four when she came out of her brownstone wearing a huge white tutu, a 2022 nod to Sex and the City’s opening credits. 

3. The Moschino Safari Suit

The safari suit! The boots! The shades! Everything LTW wore was over the top, but alighting from a white Cadillac for a charity event in episode nine, this Jeremy Scott for Moschino outfit topped them all. The look of the series.

4. THAT Tulle Dress

Most people can still cite their most memorable outfit. Mine was the impossibly romantic mille-feuille Atelier Versace gown Carrie wore in a Paris hotel room for the final season of SATC, dusted off again for And Just Like That in episode eight.

5. Rainbow Co-Ord

The vintage 80s Norma Kamali madras blazer and matching jumpsuit in episode four was a fashion rainbow that made your heart sing. SJP is known for being heavily involved in the styling of the show, and her confident use of colour is one of her trademarks.

Next up, our key trends for spring summer 2022. 

Carrie Bradshaw is now back on our screens, and just like that many of her wardrobe signatures are making a quick revival. Carrie will forever be associated with corsages, namesake necklaces and Manolos, but to me one of the most Bradshaw trends of all is the ballerina skirt. In the opening sequence of Sex and the City she wore a pink tank top with a white tutu, which stylist Patricia Field found for $5. In series six when Carrie moved to Paris with Aleksandr Petrovsky the ballerina skirt returned for her final scene where she gets slapped and then is reunited with Mr Big. To be precise it was a sage green knee-length tulle skirt.

Sarah Jessica Parker has said of the now iconic look: ‘I think I loved the tutu dress that I wore at the end of the Paris episode because it was an outfit that was about an image that Carrie had, which was, like so often happens to Carrie, what she wanted to project onto the scenario of wearing that dress, a pie in her face. That outfit got to tell so many stories, and it was such a romantic outfit and it was so delicate and it had so much grace to it, and it ran around Paris, and that was not how she had imagined that outfit.’ 

The tutu has made a return in the spin-off series And Just Like That, as Sarah Jessica Parker has been seen filming in an ankle-grazing white tulle skirt. It’s also making its way back into our wardrobes, as I’ve started noticing tulle ballerina skirts trickling into new-in sections. Raey, the label available on Matchesfashion, has made a beautiful knee-length recycled tulle skirt in the Carrie sage green, as well as black, red, yellow and many more shades. Arket has also created its own take in a beautiful mossy green. Raey styles the skirt in a distinctly modern way in its imagery, with an oversized jumper worn over the skirt, giving it a more relaxed and feel less costume.

Carrie Bradshaw is nothing if not a fashion devotee. After all, she is the character who once said she would sometimes buy Vogue instead of dinner because she felt it "fed her more." And while I would by no means advocate for that sort of behaviour, you do have to admire her passion for the cause.

From the original Sex and the City series to the movies and new season on the horizon, Bradshaw's wardrobe has long been a hotly debated topic of conversation. Between the eclectic styling, OTT accessories and sheer number of Manolo Blahniks, there's always been a lot to discuss.

However, while we could spend hours debating the best SATC looks of all time or dissecting in great detail the true meaning behind Bradshaw's latest outfits, today, we're here to recount her penchant for recycling from her own wardrobe.

Over the last few months, SATC fans have been offered glimpses into the filming of the new series, And Just Like That, and of course, all anyone can talk about is the fashion. 

It's been refreshing to see that in 2021, Bradshaw has delved into her own archives to rediscover key pieces she's worn before. Thus far, we've spotted several accessories on set that look quite familiar, including the black studded belt she wore several times in the original movie and the famed blue Manolos she wore to wed Big.

1. The Studded Belt

We were introduced to this studded belt by Streets Ahead in the very first scene of the first Sex and the City movie, and it's been a pretty regular fixture on Bradshaw's waist ever since. She wore the item several times throughout that initial film, and Sarah Jessica Parker has recently been spotted wearing the belt again on the set of And Just Like That paired alongside a fuchsia midi dress.

2. The Blue Manolo Blahniks

Anyone who has seen the first film will remember these iconic shoes. They are the heels Big used to propose with, after all, and Bradshaw subsequently wore the pair to marry him at City Hall. Of course, the memorable Manolos are back for 2021, as the shoes have been spotted on Sarah Jessica Parker on the set of And Just Like That.

3. The Flower Brooch

Keen-eyed SATC fans noticed this flower brooch looked somewhat familiar, and the women behind the Instagram account @everyoutfitonsatc managed to narrow it down. Bradshaw first wore this brooch in season three, episode two alongside her forever-favourite fur coat. For 2021, the accessory has been elevated somewhat, now appearing on the lapel of a very chic oversized white blazer.

Bradshaw clearly has a liking for floral accessories, as the character wore a similar lavender flower brooch in the original series alongside a white tank, pink trousers and Dior Saddle bag.

4. The Fur Coat

While we have yet to see this Carrie classic on the set of And Just Like That, it is worth a mention simply for the sheer number of times Bradshaw has worn it already. This coat was a staple in the early seasons of SATC and reappeared in the first movie (when Bradshaw left the house on New Year's Eve in a snowstorm, no less). I'd almost put money on the fact this coat will be back again at some point. Watch this space.

And just like that… we all fell totally and utterly in love with Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe, again. In the span of just a few days, the New York paparazzi has been busier than they have probably been throughout the entirety of the past year documenting the sidewalks that Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon have been strutting down while filming segments for the reboot of Sex and the City. While the jury is still out on whether Carrie has the technical know-how to launch a podcast (yes, that's her job now) or whether each episode will be totally stripped of sass and LOLs without Samantha or whether the new script is any good (a single page leaked, and the world went wild), what we do know is that the fashion is still igniting passion. 

For this new series entitled And Just Like That…, every OG fan has been wishing the same thing: Please don't let Carrie be any less adventurous or trendsetting or joyful with her outfit choices just because she's in her 50s. Fortunately, the looks thus far have not disappointed. Revered costume designer Patricia Field was the progenitor of Carrie's kooky aesthetic in the old days, and while she is too busy on Emily in Paris to be signed up for this gig, a dear friend and former colleague from the previous seasons, Molly Rogers, is the person responsible for this high-pressure wardrobing in 2021. We know our gut feelings about the ensembles, and our audience sure has shared their reactions on social media, but what do we think SJP and her stylist are really trying to say about Carrie 2.0? I reached out to behavioural psychologist Carolyn Mair, PhD—author of The Psychology of Fashion and founder of Psychology.Fashion—to drill down into the nitty-gritty of what each colour, cut, detail and accessory might be portraying, subliminally or overtly. Keep reading to find out.

1. THE BRIGHT DRESS (AND THAT BELT)

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Carolina Herrera dress; Streets Ahead belt; Judith Leiber bag

The psychologist's take: Mair says it's definitely "girly (obviously because of the colour) but also bold and modern," and it's true that there's nothing too saccharine sweet about this shade of mauve and the business-like shirt-dress style. "Because of its colour, it says, 'Look at me,' and because of its volume, it says, 'But keep your distance,'" she adds. So perhaps Carrie is more guarded and that little bit tougher going into her new era? The spiky belt and stiletto heels would echo this idea. And yes, that belt is the one from the first movie.

An editor's take: Vibrant shades of pink have been trending for some time, and it's only natural that Carrie's full-skirted tutu and bodysuit was reinvented for the reboot. There's a lot to translate directly from this look and into our current wardrobes.

2. THE GINGHAM CORSET SKIRT

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Norma Kamali skirt; Celine shoes; Monrowe NYC hat

The psychologist's take: "Flirty and fitted," says Mair. "It’s sexy and reminiscent of a corset, yet it's demure because of the length. Gingham is traditionally associated with children's clothes, so it looks youthful, energetic and fun. It says, 'I feel great' and 'This is going to be a great day.'" Time will only tell whether the plot correlates with the mood of this ensemble, but this particular gingham skirt has inspired many a comment on Instagram, with shoppers desperate to know how they can get hold of one.

An editor's take: Carrie has always leaned heavily into accessories, but it seems even more apparent in this series, with piece upon piece piled high. Could it be that the clothes themselves are more demure and the add-ons bring the kook? It's a fail-safe formula for many of us to follow when we feel more comfortable in classic clothing items.

3. THE MIX 'N' MATCH JUMPSUIT

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Dries Van Noten jacket; Claude Montana jumpsuit; Paco Rabanne bag; Saint Laurent sandals

The psychologist's take: "I love this! This shouts class and style," says Mair. "The jumpsuit alone draws attention but suggests a more reserved approach than some of the other looks. It says, 'You will need to get to know me first.'" So could this be worn for a new friend or lover? There are plenty of new cast members for Carrie to get acquainted with. "The jacket is a fun addition that brings animation to the neutral nature of the jumpsuit, and because it's fitted, it accentuates the flowing skirt part of the trousers. It 'softens' the look, making the wearer appear less aloof and more approachable. The hat, bags and shoes are all statement pieces that draw attention in a way that suggest business (two bags) and uncertainty (two bags)," she adds. Mair, like many of us, felt a bit stumped on the jaunty hat—is it just a piece too far?

An editor's take: There's a lot here to unpack, but essentially, tailored, smart jumpsuits are a brilliant choice for those days where a dress just doesn't feel radical enough. You can make like Carrie and do some experimental layering, but a key piece like this will stand up on its own, too.

4. THE PASTEL COAT

The credits for this look are currently unknown. We'll keep you posted!

The psychologist's take: "Classic, plain and loose, this is a very different look to all the others," explains Mair. "It's delicate (colour) and suggests vulnerability (silhouette). This look would be chosen purposefully to project the wearer's mood. It says, "I don't want company, but if you must, approach with care or stay away.'" Should we be expecting a major upset? Did Carrie lose a recording? Or Big? We need answers!

An editor's take: Many online commentary has centered around this look being supposedly "dowdy" or too subdued, but I actually think it's elegant and understated. Not every outfit has to be loud and wild, and perhaps, that's something Carrie has also come to the conclusion of in her 50s. I am rather enamoured by the white mules, and they feel a lot more like her previous wardrobe than the many other platform shoes pictured here.

5. THE PARTY LOOK

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Fendi bag; Saint Laurent shoes

The psychologist's take: "This one suggests openness, an attitude towards experimentation and welcoming new experiences. The bold colours, shiny fabrics and sequinned bag reflect light and draw attention. Each would grab attention on its own, but in combination, they have a wow effect that says, 'Notice me—I'm up for fun.' The neutral colour of the coat tempers this a little and perhaps suggests, 'But I might need a little warming up first.'" This appears to be the message throughout and perhaps rings true with the Carrie we already know: She's open and fun, but those traits are mostly reserved for the inner circle.

An editor's take: As the world of parties and socialising starts to open up, a fresh injection of outfit ideas is more than welcome. The way a jazzy dress has been calmed by a more demure outer layer is a good hack for chilly British evenings, and I adore the purple Fendi paillette baguette—who wouldn't?

There are many things that will be different about the confirmed reboot of Sex and the City. For starters, it's going to be called And Just Like That…, a phrase plucked from Carrie Bradshaw's internal monologue and whimsical writing style. 'Tis a new chapter for the New York City gals, one they shall be venturing into as a threesome—Kim Cattrall has opted out, which won't come as a surprise to anyone who keeps up with the news on this cult TV show. "The series will follow Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s," reads the HBO press release. While we all want to know how things worked out on the love-life front, the Who What Wear team is most excited about what's to be served up in terms of fashion looks. 

Personally, I was never a fan of the storylines or characters (apart from Samantha, so boo). Don't @ me. Carrie's incessant whining and fairly terrible track record as a supposed best mate always put me off binging the programme as many others did, and it's very likely I've missed a cult-favourite episode here and there. Being a teenager in a boring countryside village, I didn't feel any sort of resonance for their lifestyle to begin with, but I was always very conscious of the impact it had on style and trends. At the time, the bold decisions made by costume designer Patricia Field rumbled far beyond the avenues and streets of their home city and encouraged women across the globe to be more adventurous with their wardrobes, just like Carrie. She made certain items iconic and synonymous with her quirky, never-predictable look—from exposed bra straps and tutus to a major Fendi Baguette moment. We don't have visibility yet on whether Patricia will be part of the crew when filming starts again later this spring (could it be time for a switch up? I'd like Shiona Turini as an alternative option), but I have taken it upon myself to do some predictive work for whoever lands the gig.

I hope that her working-from-home wardrobe won't be as casual and uninspired as mine is, and I have high expectations of the new designers and brands she'll want to flaunt, support, and be pretty woke about. There's a great deal of young talent available in the States these days, so perhaps, the mega-brands of Europe won't figure as prominently. Although, it'd be hard for her to resist the eclecticism of Gucci. But most of all, I don't think the journalist should be approaching her style any differently for turning 50. Age-appropriateness needs to be removed from our minds once and for all, and perhaps, this SATC renaissance might be the catalyst for a shift in perceptions. 

Will Carrie succumb to trainers and sensible flat shoes? Could she ever own a—gasp—tracksuit? Fingers crossed she'll come back to our screens with a big dose of fashion escapism instead of anything too realistic because goodness knows we all need it. So below you'll find the outfits I'd really like to see Carrie wear for the modern age, based upon some of her best looks from seasons past.

1. The Tutu 2.0

I can't hear the plinky-plonky theme tune without instantly conjuring the pink bodysuit and tutu to mind. The flouncy, voluminous looks and cute colours followed Carrie right through her journey from the TV series to SATC movies, so I'm sure the idea will continue, especially considering this kind of look is particularly popular in 2021.

2. The Sassy LBD

From teeny-tiny jersey creations like this one to wrap dresses and more sombre options (see the above tube dress pictured with the rest of the SATC crew), these women sure knew how to invest in little black dresses for all occasions.

I never forget a good dress—fictional or real life. One such frock that will forever be permanently imprinted on my brain is the naked dress Carrie Bradshaw wears for her first date with Big in Sex and the City (season one, episode six). For the uninitiated, Carrie wore the naked dress in a photo shoot to promote her column and then decided to wear it on the date. It was short, stopped above the knee and had straps, but you couldn’t tell, and it was a perfect match for her skin tone. Hence naked dress. 

Despite the fact that you would need real confidence to wear such a dress, I’ve found a similar version on the high street—from COS, no less. While the Scandi brand is known for doing pared-back dresses, sassy styles it isn’t. So it was a pleasant surprise to discover such a dress from the high-street store. Next up, the biggest spring/summer 2020 fashion trends you need to know. 

She spent many a morning tapping away at her laptop; pontificating on the meaning of love, men, and Manolo Blahniks; mooching 'round her flat in boxer shorts; cradling a cup of coffee; and gazing blankly out the window. Yes, I have no doubt that Carrie Bradshaw would be well-versed in the art of working from home if she lived in modern-day Manhattan. We might've left her immortalised in 2004, but it doesn't take much to picture her in 2020, iPhone in hand, navigating the politics of online dating during lockdown, all the while updating her Instagram feed with arty mirror selfies and desperately tweeting Il Cantinori about its takeout service. (She hasn't used her oven in 25 years.) 

Of course, we all know that in reality, a freelance writer with a designer shoe habit could never afford to live on the Upper East Side, but this is magical TV land, and we'll take all the escapism we can get right now. So in the spirit of things, we couldn't help but wonder what CB would wear at home had the series run today.

We decided to fabricate four imaginary working-from-home looks that we would've loved to see Ms. Bradshaw in and included plenty of references to some of her most iconic getups but updated them for 2020. From clogs (who else would dare to attempt this trend?) and fluffy mules to blinged-up cardis and menswear shirts, scroll down to see the outfits Carrie would wear during lockdown.

Style Notes: Carrie could never resist the opportunity to pad around her bedroom in an oversize shirt and socks, and I can imagine that this would lend itself to a dress-from-the-waist-up Zoom call. Classically, she would allow a glimpse of bra (NSFW is so 2019) and add a bit of bling via a chunky chain.

While I'm personally more partial to Sarah Jessica Parker's off-screen outfits, there's no doubt that her real life fashion choices can often seem inspired by her best-known role. Last night, attending the New York City Ballet 2019 Fall Fashion Gala, SJP wore an incredible hot pink gown (AKA the colour of 2019) with mismatched shoes. The whole look was the definition of fabulous and there's nothing I would want to change about it. The Zac Posen dress included huge, puffy sleeves and was draped in all the right places while still showing off SJP's incredible figure with a fitted bodice. The neckline was just slightly off the shoulder and her neat high bun meant this feature was beautifully highlighted. 

This is all before we get on to the controversial shoe trend she was wearing. SJP, always one to embrace a more interesting detail (not to mention it's a big microtrend for autumn), went all out and wore one pink and one gold heel. While you could definitely try this trend out yourself, there's no denying it would be quite an effort to ensure you got two pairs that worked (not to mention you'd have to buy the two pairs of shoes too). However, sometimes investing in a small detail can take your outfit from great to incredible. Carrie, I'm sure of it, would be proud. It'll hardly come as a surprise when I say that I love Sex and the City. As a woman who works in journalism and fashion, it's no shockers that I love a TV programme about a fashion writer who lives in New York. Like a Monty Python fan who obsessively recites the funniest lines from The Holy Grail, there are plenty of outfits of Carrie's that I still think about and will often reference.

The pink Oscar de la Renta gown she wore to the ballet. The newspaper Dior dress. Or how about the Prada look she wore to Smith's theatre debut? All of these outfits will remain some of my favourites ever seen on screen, but there are some others that are best forgotten: Off the top of my head, there's the pinstripe suit she wore for her first day at Vogue, her confusing love of flat caps and her even more odd choice of cycling shorts (yes, I know people love them right now, but I'll never be on board).

All of this reflection on Carrie's wardrobe leads me to one conclusion: Sarah Jessica Parker's style is much better than her most famous character's. As I said, while there are plenty of Bradshaw looks I still love, in general, SJP's ensembles are far more superior. Call it age or just a love of good taste, but Sarah consistently nails it when it comes to her style.

From spectacular looks for the Met Gala to just classic jeans and a nice top outfit, SJP knows how to dress with elegance but is by no means boring. With that in mind, allow me to take you through some of her best-ever looks. "Sorry Carrie, I can't. Don't hate me."

While scrolling through the endless trove of Sex and the City paparazzi and still images recently, I found myself thinking that Carrie Bradshaw's summer style resonates more than ever now. She was the epitome of the late '90s/early 2000s fashion girl, and seeing as that's the way many 2019 fashion girls aspire to dress, I'm here to make it a little easier on you all.

Another fun thing that I did recently was create a budget capsule wardrobe of 14 outfits, each under £100 and often using the same pieces, which probably sounds impossible, but I like a challenge. Carrie Bradshaw's style, like many peoples', becomes more experimental heading into warmer weather. The sun and heat can bring out the most confident and daring of looks, and her outfit output during New York's hot and sticky summers were about as wild as they get: Combining rather "extra" pieces (like feathered headbands and tartan miniskirts) alongside unexpected sporty items was a trademark CB patented many years before the street style set.

Wearing strappy heels with everything—even the weirdest or most casual of getups—was her norm. No accessory was an accessory too far, and odd colour combinations (such as lime green and candy pink) were all too easy for her to pull off.

At the time of airing, the case of Sex and the City's closets were what we aspired to have but didn't necessarily feel confident enough to copy ad nauseam. However, it would appear now that the summer of 2019 is bringing out the inner Carrie in many a woman we admire. When Italian designer and It girl Gilda Ambrosio combined a fluoro pink tennis skirt with lace-up heels and a flannel lumberjack shirt, it set this train of thought into motion. However, as I looked a little deeper on the feeds of Instagram, I could see Bradshaw's kooky influence all over. 

From pink tutus—like the one she so famously wore in the opening credits—to the kind of lingerie-as-daywear combinations only the leader of the pack could pull off, she is clearly the driving force behind many new outfits, whether this crowd realises it or not. Keep scrolling to see what I mean…

Style Notes: The look that started a chain reaction: This tennis skirt, vintage tee, flannel shirt and strappy pink heels combo is just the kind of mad thing Carrie would have whipped up on a whim.

It's been 15 years since new Sex and the City episodes hit our screens, but undoubtedly, Carrie Bradshaw remains a major style inspiration. We've already noticed her favourite shoes making a comeback in 2019 and defined the pillars of her winter capsule wardrobe, but this latest Carrie renaissance has moved beyond the realms of fashion.

Yes, Carrie Bradshaw's hair has been making a comeback, with Instagram's most fashionable girls stepping out with her iconic waves. For reference—and for the true SATC fans—we’re talking Carrie curls circa Season 2 here. Arguably the most distinctive Bradshaw style, this hair is flat at the roots and wavy through the lengths—less volumised than her Season 1 curls and less styled than her Season 4 bob—for an effortless style that never looks too try-hard and errs on the right side of messy and dishevelled.

One could question whether this kind of scruffy, brushed-out style is the perfect combatant to really outré outfits: Would you agree that a crazy-bold ensemble looks all the more laid-back with the right kind of undone 'do? In addition, it can also add depth to a more bohemian vibe, such as the models seen at Chloé's surf-inspired S/S 19 show. Many of the girls had unruly Carrie hair to match their slightly hippie-inspired clothes.

But just how easy is it to get the look yourself? We asked top hairstylists to spill the beans on exactly how to get Carrie hair in the comfort of your own home and which products you should have on hand to maximise that cool-girl texture.

The most important thing about this Carrie Bradshaw look is to forget about perfection. The key to perfection, according to celebrity stylist Jay Birmingham. "Forget being overly neat. The charm is that slightly unkempt feel so try not to overly perfect this style." Similarly, Joico ambassador Bruno Marc Giamattei said that this hairstyle can really require as much or as little styling as you like: "The beauty of it is that unkempt feel, which is captivating."

There a few ways to get the look yourself. "One of the most simplistic ways is to tie your hair into medium sized buns when damp," Giamattei told us. "If possible, try to sleep with this style in overnight to give your hair adequate time to dry and mould into that waved shape." Come morning, simply untie your hair to reveal naturally disheveled hair.

If you're looking for a more distinctive wave, try plaiting your hair instead of twisting it into buns. "To create the flatter shape at the crown, make sure you don't begin to plait the hair until closer to the mid-lengths," Joico's Paul Watts advised us.

If you can't face the thought of sleeping with damp hair to get the look, heat-styling is another easy option. Jonny Long, co-founder of Lockonego salon, said you should first dry your hair with a nozzle to create shine. Once dry, use tongs or straighteners to add in waves. The key to the Carrie look, though, is to take a paddle brush and lightly brush out the waves.

The trick to keeping your hard work in place? "Scrunch your hair from the bottom with one hand, and mist in some hair spray at the same time," Birmingham said. "This will add even more volume and help to stop your waves from dropping down throughout the day."

Style Notes: This sultry sheer nightie is more Samantha than Charlotte; however, desperate measures were needed to reignite the spark with husband Trey in Season 3. The fashion crowd are into sheer fabrics for daytime this season, but these lacy numbers are (IMHO) strictly for the bedroom only.

First of all, who doesn't need a little Carrie Bradshaw in their lives (and wardrobes)? Whether she's flaunting her insane designer handbag collection or wearing an actual bird on her head (see the first movie), there's really nothing she can't pull off in her signature "Oh, this old thing?" style. It may have been 20 years since Sex and the City first aired, but the show is still one we watch reruns of just for its witty commentary and truly iconic fashion. It only takes one look at the viral Instagram account @everyoutfitonsatc—which does exactly what it suggests: chronicle every noteworthy fashion moment from the show—to remember Carrie's best (and occasionally cringe-worthy) outfits.

Although everyone had a field day with the show's summer style, Carrie's autumn outfits are equally noteworthy but far less appreciated. Since she inadvertently predicted some of the biggest 2018 trends in the game over a decade early, so many of her autumn outfits feel just as relevant today. Remember when she styled a strong-shouldered blazer or took a risk and wore a pair of cargo trousers with her mules? I not only revisited her best autumn looks, but I also created a Carrie capsule wardrobe of her key pieces. If Carrie herself could actually budget, she'd be all over the following under-£100 pieces.

An '80s-inspired blazer

Okay, maybe skip the capri-length leggings and ballet flats with this, but embrace a little Carrie-esque drama in this strong-shouldered blazer.

Itty-bitty shoulder bags

It was the 2000s, and no one made baguette bags look chicer than Carrie Bradshaw herself. We have a strong feeling she'd be all over this leopard-print one from Topshop.

Slim oval shades

Since Carrie Bradshaw in athleisure is shocking enough as it is, I'm simply not going to address this one-off moment and instead direct your attention toward her very chic '90s-style oval sunglasses.

Throw a newsboy cap on it

Speaking of things I'm actively not addressing, Carrie is making all sorts of contradictions in this outfit. Nonetheless, there's something in me that wants to say it's all okay because she threw a very autumnal newsboy hat on top of it all, and (sue me) but it just works.

Don't hate me, but cargo pants are a thing

If you're like me, you have a lot of feelings about the return of these "ugly" pants, but if anyone could throw caution to the wind and just do it, it's Carrie. We'd probably skip the football T-shirt, though.

Get yourself a statement jacket

One of our top style lessons from the Manhattanite herself? Be bold. While Carrie wore her fair share of eccentric accessories, you can still channel her attention-grabbing style through a statement-making jacket.

Literally anything crystal-embellished

If the term "extra" had existed in Carrie's time, she'd probably have a nameplate necklace with the word that so accurately and succinctly describes her style. I mean, what better way to dress up your NYE pajama look, right?

Pearls—and loads of them

Pearl jewellery is experiencing a revival right now, meaning Carrie was way ahead of her time (but tell me something I don't know). This pretty baroque pearl necklace is the number one way to wear pearls à la Carrie but still feel current.

It bags, It bags, It bags

Her designer bag collection is obviously next-level, but to channel this particular Carrie look and not emerge broke on the other end, go for a similar (unbranded) belt bag.

Oliver Twist, but make it fashion

Under any other circumstances, this kind of aggressively historical look would feel off, but of course on Carrie, it somehow works. Take the pinstripe motif but leave the knickerbockers and suspenders to interpretations of Oliver Twist.

Recently I was skimming through some episodes of Sex and the City and I realised just how good all the fashion was. This is a well-documented point, sure, and there is plenty of literature to back up the importance of Carrie’s wardrobe, but this is where I divert. When watching some of those classic episodes set in the early 2000s, it wasn’t Carrie who stood out to me but Charlotte—and it occurred to me just how underrated Charlotte’s style is.

She’s largely known as being old-fashioned and the conventionalist, which there is an argument for, but what struck me is how great some of her outfits are. In particular, she has a thing for classic styles like bustier tops inspired by corsets that fit with her proclivity for romance. And the decades-old pieces remind me a lot of pieces designers like Brock and Markarian are bringing to market today.

I’m personally a fan of bustiers—and even wrote a story about the “nouveau milkmaid tops” that are taking over 2018. Charlotte’s versions were just a precursor, but they are now ones I’m looking to as inspiration for what I’m wearing currently. Ahead I’m trying out the trend for myself and breaking down the tops I imagine Charlotte wearing in 2018, whether designed with a flouncy peplum hem, a sweetheart neckline or covered in a delicate floral print.

The first time I tried to tap into Charlotte's look

I decided to try out Charlotte’s look after watching some old SATC episodes. This top doesn’t have boning or any major structural elements, but it mimics the look of a bustier.

Important question: Does the internet need yet another article about Carrie Bradshaw's style? Maybe not, but here's why I think we need to talk about her just one more time: I believe that Carrie was leading the charge for a tonne of trends 13 years (and more) ago and that these predicted some of the biggest looks for 2018. Now, you could say that fashion is cyclical and that the outfits she was wearing then have just come back around again. But some of the pieces she was wearing then were kind of niche (e.g., naked shoes) and weren't as big back then. However, many of her signature pieces are all the rage now. If you're a massive fan of Sex and the City and can't get enough of Carrie Bradshaw's style (hi, everyone), then I suggest you keep scrolling to see all the trends she predicted and where to shop key pieces now.

#1: Transparent Shoes

Style Notes: Back when this episode first aired in the late '90s (the one where Carrie says to Big, "Your girl is lovely, Hubble." If you know, then you know), all eyes were on that knockout dress. But now we're all about those transparent, "naked" shoes. 

#2: Woven Bags

Style Notes: We probably don't need to tell you that basket bags have been everywhere the whole of 2018, and not just for the summer. We can see this being big throughout the rest of the year. 

#3: Old-Fashioned Hats

Style Notes: While Carrie opted for a flat cap, the 2018 version of wearing an old man hat is the baker boy cap trend.

#4: Millennial Pink

Style Notes: When I first saw this look, I was all about the ill-advised Hermès scarf styling. Now? I'm all about the pink. Millennial pink, of course. 

#5: Frills

Style Notes: You can't move for frills on the high street and in designer collections right now. Shout out to Carrie for giving us life with this look first, though. 

#6: Strappy Dresses

Style Notes: Call this an extension of our love for the slip dress, but the strappy dress (whether loose or body-con; midi or maxi) has been one of our favourite looks of 2018. Not only has it been a staple for the summer, but also we'll be layering a roll-neck underneath for the coming months. 

#7: Clashing Florals

Style Notes: Olivia Palermo is a dab hand at clashing prints, but this look from Carrie is great styling advice: Opt for opposing colours but keep your top simple. 

#8: Flirty Polka Dots

Style Notes: If you're not a fan of the ubiquitous athleisure, then you'll be pleased to know that more flirty styles (like polka dots) are coming back.

#9: Dresses Worn Under Jeans

Style Notes: We've seen this idea throughout most fashion weeks, but we guarantee it'll ramp back up again in the colder months.

#10: Knotted Jumpers

Style Notes: Okay, okay, this trend isn't exactly groundbreaking. But this trick of knotting your knitwear didn't come back until the end of last year, with both Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung doing this look. We've also seen it on a lot of bloggers recently (case in point), but Carrie was doing it way back when.

#11: Bows on Everything

Style Notes: It doesn't have to be a bow belt around a dress; it could even be a bow on a shoe, on a top or on a coat. Basically, bows on everything is good to go. 

#12: Maximum Layering

Style Notes: Proof that Carrie Bradshaw can wear anything and still look good. This layered look is still one I'm trying to re-create. 

#13: Princess Dresses

Style Notes: We'd be lying if we said we weren't jealous when Alexander Petrovsky gave Carrie that pink Oscar de la Renta dress. While we don't all have artist boyfriends who are willing to buy us such extravagant gowns, the ultra-pretty princess dress is still a must for any wardrobe, even if you're just going to dance in McDonald's wearing it.

Sarah Jessica Parker wore a few trends as Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City that were definitely more out there: shoulder-swallowing floral brooches, butt-ruffle miniskirts, and belts worn over bare midriffs, to name a few. Others, however, are more than welcome to make their way into the real world—such as the royal-blue bejeweled Manolo Blahniks from the movie that became instant classics after Mr. Big proposed with one in lieu of a ring in their walk-in closet.

The style, known as Hangisi pumps, comes in more than a dozen colours and several different heel heights, from flat mules to vertiginous stilettos—and according to new data compiled by online shopping platform Lyst, it's the most searched-for wedding shoes of the year. Lyst analysed search data and surveyed 100 brides-to-be for its just-released Wedding Season report, finding that 60% considered their shoes to be as important as their dress, and 20% thought they were even more important.

From search data, Lyst also found that brides were looking to break from tradition when it comes to footwear and predicts that less than 30% will buy cream or white shoes for their wedding day. Rather, bright colours and embellishments are a hit with newly betrothed shoppers, with the pink Hangisis leading the pack in popularity and statement styles by Sophia Webster and Jimmy Choo beating out more muted options.

She really didn't want to be tied down to one job because she loved going from gig to gig and being what she called a 'journeyman.' She tried various ways to get out of it, including telling HBO she would film three projects for free if they'd release her from her contract!" 

Well, fortunately that didn't happen, and we got to enjoy the Carrie Bradshaw we know and love.

As well as SATC’s stellar writing and depiction of female friendships, fans tuned in week after week to see what Carrie would wear on the streets of Manhattan.
