A few months ago, I wrote an article questioning whether New Yorkers were the "new" French girls. In the story, I claimed that the huge interest in '90s minimalism spawned from Love Story, the hit TV show that depicted the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her husband John F Kennedy Jnr, had inspired an aesthetic amongst fashion insiders in the city that wasn’t too dissimilar from that which we often associate with French women.

Whether or not you agree that one might be replacing the other, there’s no denying the growing movement in fashion that has adopted these same codes of Carolyn’s ‘90s minimalism and French-girl style. Every New York influencer, stylist and editor I follow on Instagram claims the same seeming irreverence to trends and commitment to a timeless, neutral capsule wardrobe of pillbox hats, frog-clasp closures and silk scarf belts that ensure the appearance of effortless elegance at all times. The show began at the start of 2026, right after the peak of quiet luxury, and gave classic dressers a renewed passion for their pared-back sense of style.

Countless publications, Substack writers and online commentators documented the meteoric chokehold "CBK style" had on womenswear earlier this year. Every high-street edit and marketing email came with a subject line around getting the look, and understandably so! Bessette-Kennedy’s uniform of knee-length skirts, white shirts, Levi 501s, minimalist tailoring and dresses from Prada and Calvin Klein (she worked for the brand) was supremely elegant. Sarah Pidgeon, who played her in the show, added fuel to the fire by adopting CBK's low-key, highly effective '90s style off-screen, even dying her hair the same specific shade of blonde.

But as the show ended just in time for spring, the new highly anticipated spring/summer 2026 designer collections dropped. These collections had an occasional whiff of quiet luxury and minimalism here and there, but on the whole they painted a different picture. Texture at Bottega Veneta! Ruffles and tulle at Dior! And sequins, florals, feathers and much, much more at Chanel! Finally, maximalism was back on the menu. And it’s not that minimalists are immediately hanging up their all-black looks, but there has been a notable shift, one that made way for more experimental, eclectic and colourful wardrobes; a wardrobe that one might associate with another very well-dressed, highly referenced New Yorker born with the same initials: Carrie Bradshaw.

Worn by Sarah Jessica Parker but devised by costume designer Patricia Field, Carrie’s style needs no introduction. A longtime champion of Manolo Blahnik shoes and the person who made the Fendi Baguette the first-ever It bag, with each episode of Sex and the City, fans knew to expect the unexpected from her outfits. From the Galliano for Dior newspaper dress and the "naked" DKNY slip she's wearing on the side of the bus to the tulle skirt in the opening credits, she was an advocate for some of today’s most divisive comeback trends, including capri pants (even those in camo print), crop tops, bandanas, boob tubes and exposed bras (always with the exposed bra!). Carrie did it all, whilst almost always in heels and always looking—as she’d say—fabulous.

Today, we might be in the midst of summer 2026, but look around on the streets or in your office, and you could hardly tell. I’d estimate 90% of women dress similarly to one of these two iconic New York women of the '90s. The Carrie Bradshaws (CB) of today are those diving into mermaidcore colour palettes, likely having a "Pucci summer" and no doubt invested in one of the latest re-edition designer handbags like the Saint Laurent Mombasa, the Gucci Indy, the Fendi Baguette or the Chloé Paddington. The Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (CBK) gang, however, wear new styles from contemporary luxury brands like Toteme, Khaite and The Row. They’ll be in tailored skirt suits, tank tops with jeans and a thong wedge sandal, and maybe a pair of Celine sunglasses with a black headband for good measure.

Sure, there are some overlaps in their style; some of Carrie’s most-loved outfits were surprisingly low-key (the white bias-cut silk dress when she sees Big outside his engagement party at The Plaza), but those are few and far between. It’s deeper than just minimalist vs. maximalist, timeless vs. trending. Carolyn had a uniform, but if one tried to give the same to Carrie, she’d have it tailored into a miniskirt and put a Tory Burch brooch on it. Where Carrie was appealing because she tried (who else wears heels with athletic shorts for a dog walk?), Carolyn was appealing because she didn’t. Effortlessness was essential to her aloof sense of cool.

And before you tell me that New York style can’t be categorised just by these two women, that I’m forgetting many other well-dressed NYC celebrity inhabitants like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Chloë Sevigny and Zoë Kravitz, to name a few, I know, but they weren’t born with the same initials, so they don’t count here.

Unlike in winter, when putting together a polished outfit seems to happen naturally, summer dressing can present its own set of challenges. When every outing feels hotter and more humid than the last, looking chic is easier said than done. That's why I always find it helpful to have a handful of reliable outfit formulas to call upon during summer's hottest days—and Sarah Jessica Parker has just reminded me of one of the chicest.

Stepping out on a warm day in New York, Parker reached for a light, breezy cotton skirt cut to the season's favourite midi length. Falling to mid-calf, this "awkward" hemline has become a fashion person's favourite this summer. Whilst undeniably elegant, it's not always the easiest length to style. But either way you cut it, the ‘90s were a time of memorable fashion, at least that’s the case for iconic ‘90s winter outfits.

From the reign of supermodels on the runway to the rise of legendary film starlets gaining cultural cache both on and off the red carpet, this decade delivered so many moments to take stock of. Yet, in my personal and professional opinion, there’s no better season for these tropes to excel than in cold weather.

Those with taste always turn to the past for sartorial inspiration. It’s why you’ll always see Alexa Chung channel her inner Courtney Love in a minidress and leopard-print coat, or Lila Moss take cues from her mother’s archive in a silky slip, fur-trimmed jacket or cigarette trousers. Whilst there’s no shortage of looks to mine if you’re ever in need of exemplary displays of style, I’ve always found that cooler settings are where these ensembles shine.

Prolific dressers of the time period delivered a masterclass in how to combat the elements with aplomb, mixing fuzzy coats with thermal layers to showcase how keeping frostbite at bay can actually be a chic affair.

There’s, of course, Carolyn Basette-Kennedy roaming the streets of New York in vintage Prada and Calvin Klein. Or, the likes of Cindy Crawford, who made every outing all the more sophisticated in her commitment to pared-back but well-edited wardrobe staples. Even, on the other side of the country in Los Angeles, someone like Winona Ryder, who proved that tailoring never goes astray.

The best of all, however, is simply how timeless these looks are. Though nearly 30 years have passed since these iconic ‘90s winter outfits were worn, they haven’t been subjected to the way the passing of time can age things. Yes, triangle scarves and textured hats might be trending now, but to truly wear them well, you must look back at when these pieces originated. In fact, I’d even wager that these items are only relevant now because of the elegant It girls who wore them first.

Season two of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…, is finally here, which means one thing: new fashion looks!

Ah, the '90s. An era defined by MTV, halter-neck tops, and more boy bands than we care to count. And with the boom of the Y2K trend that we've seen over the last few months, it seems we're not the only ones who are feeling a little nostalgic.

The It girls of the era, such as Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and Gwen Stefani, were serving up enough inspiration to carry us right into the following decade.

The subtle layers and laid-back styling made this pixie cut an instant hit when Winona Ryder debuted it in the late '90s.

No one rocked micro braids quite like Brandy Norwood. This was her signature hairstyle on her hit TV show Moesha as well as in her real life.

From the pencil-thin eyebrows to the dark lipstick and the leopard-print collar, this photo of our queen Drew Barrymore is like a time capsule into the '90s. Her flipped hair (and those enamel hair clips) is another huge clue as to which decade we're looking at.

Okay, so in all fairness, this photo was taken in the year 2000. But it's important to call out here because it exemplifies the influence that '90s hip-hop had on style and culture well into the decade that followed. J.Lo's bedazzled bandana accentuating her braided hairstyle is proof.

Carrie Bradshaw is nothing if not a fashion devotee. After all, she is the character who once said she would sometimes buy Vogue instead of dinner because she felt it "fed her more." And while I would by no means advocate for that sort of behaviour, you do have to admire her passion for the cause.

From the original Sex and the City series to the movies and new season on the horizon, Bradshaw's wardrobe has long been a hotly debated topic of conversation. Between the eclectic styling, OTT accessories and sheer number of Manolo Blahniks, there's always been a lot to discuss.

However, while we could spend hours debating the best SATC looks of all time or dissecting in great detail the true meaning behind Bradshaw's latest outfits, today, we're here to recount her penchant for recycling from her own wardrobe.

Over the last few months, SATC fans have been offered glimpses into the filming of the new series, And Just Like That, and of course, all anyone can talk about is the fashion. 

It's been refreshing to see that in 2021, Bradshaw has delved into her own archives to rediscover key pieces she's worn before. Thus far, we've spotted several accessories on set that look quite familiar, including the black studded belt she wore several times in the original movie and the famed blue Manolos she wore to wed Big.

1. The Studded Belt

We were introduced to this studded belt by Streets Ahead in the very first scene of the first Sex and the City movie, and it's been a pretty regular fixture on Bradshaw's waist ever since. She wore the item several times throughout that initial film, and Sarah Jessica Parker has recently been spotted wearing the belt again on the set of And Just Like That paired alongside a fuchsia midi dress.

2. The Blue Manolo Blahniks

Anyone who has seen the first film will remember these iconic shoes. They are the heels Big used to propose with, after all, and Bradshaw subsequently wore the pair to marry him at City Hall. Of course, the memorable Manolos are back for 2021, as the shoes have been spotted on Sarah Jessica Parker on the set of And Just Like That.

3. The Flower Brooch

Keen-eyed SATC fans noticed this flower brooch looked somewhat familiar, and the women behind the Instagram account @everyoutfitonsatc managed to narrow it down. Bradshaw first wore this brooch in season three, episode two alongside her forever-favourite fur coat. For 2021, the accessory has been elevated somewhat, now appearing on the lapel of a very chic oversized white blazer.

Bradshaw clearly has a liking for floral accessories, as the character wore a similar lavender flower brooch in the original series alongside a white tank, pink trousers and Dior Saddle bag.

4. The Fur Coat

While we have yet to see this Carrie classic on the set of And Just Like That, it is worth a mention simply for the sheer number of times Bradshaw has worn it already. This coat was a staple in the early seasons of SATC and reappeared in the first movie (when Bradshaw left the house on New Year's Eve in a snowstorm, no less). I'd almost put money on the fact this coat will be back again at some point. Watch this space.

And just like that… we all fell totally and utterly in love with Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe, again. In the span of just a few days, the New York paparazzi has been busier than they have probably been throughout the entirety of the past year documenting the sidewalks that Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon have been strutting down while filming segments for the reboot of Sex and the City. While the jury is still out on whether Carrie has the technical know-how to launch a podcast (yes, that's her job now) or whether each episode will be totally stripped of sass and LOLs without Samantha or whether the new script is any good (a single page leaked, and the world went wild), what we do know is that the fashion is still igniting passion. 

For this new series entitled And Just Like That…, every OG fan has been wishing the same thing: Please don't let Carrie be any less adventurous or trendsetting or joyful with her outfit choices just because she's in her 50s. Fortunately, the looks thus far have not disappointed. Revered costume designer Patricia Field was the progenitor of Carrie's kooky aesthetic in the old days, and while she is too busy on Emily in Paris to be signed up for this gig, a dear friend and former colleague from the previous seasons, Molly Rogers, is the person responsible for this high-pressure wardrobing in 2021. We know our gut feelings about the ensembles, and our audience sure has shared their reactions on social media, but what do we think SJP and her stylist are really trying to say about Carrie 2.0? I reached out to behavioural psychologist Carolyn Mair, PhD—author of The Psychology of Fashion and founder of Psychology.Fashion—to drill down into the nitty-gritty of what each colour, cut, detail and accessory might be portraying, subliminally or overtly. 1. THE BRIGHT DRESS (AND THAT BELT)

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Carolina Herrera dress; Streets Ahead belt; Judith Leiber bag

The psychologist's take: Mair says it's definitely "girly (obviously because of the colour) but also bold and modern," and it's true that there's nothing too saccharine sweet about this shade of mauve and the business-like shirt-dress style. "Because of its colour, it says, 'Look at me,' and because of its volume, it says, 'But keep your distance,'" she adds. So perhaps Carrie is more guarded and that little bit tougher going into her new era? The spiky belt and stiletto heels would echo this idea. And yes, that belt is the one from the first movie.

An editor's take: Vibrant shades of pink have been trending for some time, and it's only natural that Carrie's full-skirted tutu and bodysuit was reinvented for the reboot. There's a lot to translate directly from this look and into our current wardrobes.

2. THE GINGHAM CORSET SKIRT

The psychologist's take: "Flirty and fitted," says Mair. "It’s sexy and reminiscent of a corset, yet it's demure because of the length. Gingham is traditionally associated with children's clothes, so it looks youthful, energetic and fun. It says, 'I feel great' and 'This is going to be a great day.'" Time will only tell whether the plot correlates with the mood of this ensemble, but this particular gingham skirt has inspired many a comment on Instagram, with shoppers desperate to know how they can get hold of one.

An editor's take: Carrie has always leaned heavily into accessories, but it seems even more apparent in this series, with piece upon piece piled high. Could it be that the clothes themselves are more demure and the add-ons bring the kook? It's a fail-safe formula for many of us to follow when we feel more comfortable in classic clothing items.

3. THE MIX 'N' MATCH JUMPSUIT

The psychologist's take: "I love this! This shouts class and style," says Mair. "The jumpsuit alone draws attention but suggests a more reserved approach than some of the other looks. It says, 'You will need to get to know me first.'" So could this be worn for a new friend or lover? There are plenty of new cast members for Carrie to get acquainted with. "The jacket is a fun addition that brings animation to the neutral nature of the jumpsuit, and because it's fitted, it accentuates the flowing skirt part of the trousers. It 'softens' the look, making the wearer appear less aloof and more approachable. The hat, bags and shoes are all statement pieces that draw attention in a way that suggest business (two bags) and uncertainty (two bags)," she adds. Mair, like many of us, felt a bit stumped on the jaunty hat—is it just a piece too far?

An editor's take: There's a lot here to unpack, but essentially, tailored, smart jumpsuits are a brilliant choice for those days where a dress just doesn't feel radical enough. You can make like Carrie and do some experimental layering, but a key piece like this will stand up on its own, too.

4. THE PASTEL COAT

The credits for this look are currently unknown. We'll keep you posted!

The psychologist's take: "Classic, plain and loose, this is a very different look to all the others," explains Mair. "It's delicate (colour) and suggests vulnerability (silhouette). This look would be chosen purposefully to project the wearer's mood. It says, "I don't want company, but if you must, approach with care or stay away.'" Should we be expecting a major upset? Did Carrie lose a recording? Or Big? We need answers!

An editor's take: Many online commentary has centered around this look being supposedly "dowdy" or too subdued, but I actually think it's elegant and understated. Not every outfit has to be loud and wild, and perhaps, that's something Carrie has also come to the conclusion of in her 50s. I am rather enamoured by the white mules, and they feel a lot more like her previous wardrobe than the many other platform shoes pictured here.

5. THE PARTY LOOK

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Fendi bag; Saint Laurent shoes

The psychologist's take: "This one suggests openness, an attitude towards experimentation and welcoming new experiences. The bold colours, shiny fabrics and sequinned bag reflect light and draw attention. Each would grab attention on its own, but in combination, they have a wow effect that says, 'Notice me—I'm up for fun.' The neutral colour of the coat tempers this a little and perhaps suggests, 'But I might need a little warming up first.'" This appears to be the message throughout and perhaps rings true with the Carrie we already know: She's open and fun, but those traits are mostly reserved for the inner circle.

An editor's take: As the world of parties and socialising starts to open up, a fresh injection of outfit ideas is more than welcome. The way a jazzy dress has been calmed by a more demure outer layer is a good hack for chilly British evenings, and I adore the purple Fendi paillette baguette—who wouldn't?

It was back in July 2021 that the reboot of everyone's favourite fashion-centric show, Sex and the City, officially began filming in New York City before And Just Like That launched in December the very same year, and it's safe to say that the series got the whole Who What Wear team talking. There was plenty of newness on the cards in season one, but thankfully one thing remained the same: the fashion. That's right, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte were back in action and wearing some very on-brand outfits for each of their characters. (Sadly, Samantha was not part of the new spin-off, and her sassy ensembles and witty one-liners will continue to be sorely missed.) 

Season one didn’t disappoint when it came to standout fashion moments, with highlights including a sequin Fendi bag, feather headpiece and, of course, plenty of enviable shoes. And it looks like we can expect just as much sartorial joy from season two. Thanks to paparazzi images, we have the very first look at what the ladies are wearing in the second season of the show. Naturally, Carrie is leading the way on the accessories front thanks to a J.W. Anderson pigeon clutch bag, which she’s paired with a utility-esque boilersuit, sky-high Dior sandals and tights. Meanwhile, Charlotte is looking every bit the Upper East Sider in a sheer polka-dot blouse complete with bright pink bow, a black pencil skirt and sleek pumps. 

These first look images are a clear indication that costume designer Molly Rogers, who worked with former lead Patricia Field on the previous series, is continuing to evolve the character’s style (who didn’t love the bohemian lift to Carrie’s ensembles in the first season?) whilst also nodding to each of their signature aesthetics. And if anyone could understand where to take 50-something Carrie's wardrobe, it would be someone who has already analysed it inside and out.

Ah, the 1980s. The decade of shoulder pads wider than doorways and hairstyles dependent on whole cans of hair spray was not an easy time for minimalists or shy and retiring types. Many people who lived through the extreme fashions of the day recoil in horror now at the thought of them returning. Eighties outfits were all about ultra-conspicuousness and being noticed. From meringue dresses and rah-rah skirts to leg warmers and stilettos, Spandex and lamé to door-knocker earrings and giant sunglasses, this was the era of OTT style, and the '90s took a sharp about-turn following the visual overload.

Now, with time and distance from this wild fashion period, not all 1980s ensembles seem quite as hideous as they once did. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if you look closely, you'll find many key looks from the ostentatious epoch cropping up in today's coolest trends. Puffball dresses and puff sleeves are certainly back. Just think of the cloud-like frocks bouncing all over IG. Cut-outs and tight LBDs are popular once more—the S/S 22 runways say so. Oversize suiting is in, as are baggy jeans, loafers and baseball caps. Together, they were the power combo of the 1980s, and today, they're looking just as great in influencer circles.

Where does one find authentic inspiration for vintage fashion trends all these years later? Well, you're still best off digging into the archives, but rather than focusing on the more attention-grabbing looks from the period, it's worth cherry-picking some more wearable outfits from the biggest celebrities of the time. For all of Princess Diana's fancy gowns and prim skirt suits, there were some cool, casual moments too. Every barely there outfit Cher wore was counterbalanced with something more approachable for an average human without a stadium audience to entertain. Next Up, Autumn/Winter 2022 Trends: The 15 Fashion Looks You Need to Know About

There are many things that will be different about the confirmed reboot of Sex and the City. For starters, it's going to be called And Just Like That…, a phrase plucked from Carrie Bradshaw's internal monologue and whimsical writing style. 'Tis a new chapter for the New York City gals, one they shall be venturing into as a threesome—Kim Cattrall has opted out, which won't come as a surprise to anyone who keeps up with the news on this cult TV show. "The series will follow Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s," reads the HBO press release. While we all want to know how things worked out on the love-life front, the Who What Wear team is most excited about what's to be served up in terms of fashion looks. 

Personally, I was never a fan of the storylines or characters (apart from Samantha, so boo). Don't @ me. Carrie's incessant whining and fairly terrible track record as a supposed best mate always put me off binging the programme as many others did, and it's very likely I've missed a cult-favourite episode here and there. Being a teenager in a boring countryside village, I didn't feel any sort of resonance for their lifestyle to begin with, but I was always very conscious of the impact it had on style and trends. At the time, the bold decisions made by costume designer Patricia Field rumbled far beyond the avenues and streets of their home city and encouraged women across the globe to be more adventurous with their wardrobes, just like Carrie. She made certain items iconic and synonymous with her quirky, never-predictable look—from exposed bra straps and tutus to a major Fendi Baguette moment. We don't have visibility yet on whether Patricia will be part of the crew when filming starts again later this spring (could it be time for a switch up? I'd like Shiona Turini as an alternative option), but I have taken it upon myself to do some predictive work for whoever lands the gig.

I hope that her working-from-home wardrobe won't be as casual and uninspired as mine is, and I have high expectations of the new designers and brands she'll want to flaunt, support, and be pretty woke about. There's a great deal of young talent available in the States these days, so perhaps, the mega-brands of Europe won't figure as prominently. Although, it'd be hard for her to resist the eclecticism of Gucci. But most of all, I don't think the journalist should be approaching her style any differently for turning 50. Age-appropriateness needs to be removed from our minds once and for all, and perhaps, this SATC renaissance might be the catalyst for a shift in perceptions. 

Will Carrie succumb to trainers and sensible flat shoes? Could she ever own a—gasp—tracksuit? Fingers crossed she'll come back to our screens with a big dose of fashion escapism instead of anything too realistic because goodness knows we all need it. I can't hear the plinky-plonky theme tune without instantly conjuring the pink bodysuit and tutu to mind. While I'm personally more partial to Sarah Jessica Parker's off-screen outfits, there's no doubt that her real life fashion choices can often seem inspired by her best-known role. Last night, attending the New York City Ballet 2019 Fall Fashion Gala, SJP wore an incredible hot pink gown (AKA the colour of 2019) with mismatched shoes. The whole look was the definition of fabulous and there's nothing I would want to change about it. The Zac Posen dress included huge, puffy sleeves and was draped in all the right places while still showing off SJP's incredible figure with a fitted bodice. The neckline was just slightly off the shoulder and her neat high bun meant this feature was beautifully highlighted. 

This is all before we get on to the controversial shoe trend she was wearing. SJP, always one to embrace a more interesting detail (not to mention it's a big microtrend for autumn), went all out and wore one pink and one gold heel. While you could definitely try this trend out yourself, there's no denying it would be quite an effort to ensure you got two pairs that worked (not to mention you'd have to buy the two pairs of shoes too). However, sometimes investing in a small detail can take your outfit from great to incredible. Carrie, I'm sure of it, would be proud. It'll hardly come as a surprise when I say that I love Sex and the City. As a woman who works in journalism and fashion, it's no shockers that I love a TV programme about a fashion writer who lives in New York. Like a Monty Python fan who obsessively recites the funniest lines from The Holy Grail, there are plenty of outfits of Carrie's that I still think about and will often reference.

The pink Oscar de la Renta gown she wore to the ballet. The newspaper Dior dress. Or how about the Prada look she wore to Smith's theatre debut? All of these outfits will remain some of my favourites ever seen on screen, but there are some others that are best forgotten: Off the top of my head, there's the pinstripe suit she wore for her first day at Vogue, her confusing love of flat caps and her even more odd choice of cycling shorts (yes, I know people love them right now, but I'll never be on board).

All of this reflection on Carrie's wardrobe leads me to one conclusion: Sarah Jessica Parker's style is much better than her most famous character's. As I said, while there are plenty of Bradshaw looks I still love, in general, SJP's ensembles are far more superior. Call it age or just a love of good taste, but Sarah consistently nails it when it comes to her style.

From spectacular looks for the Met Gala to just classic jeans and a nice top outfit, SJP knows how to dress with elegance but is by no means boring. With that in mind, allow me to take you through some of her best-ever looks. "Sorry Carrie, I can't. Don't hate me."

Yesterday though SJP was photographed walking to lunch with Michelle Obama, and the shots look like they could be promotional material for another chapter of Sex and the City. 

SJP wore a printed maxi dress with a fitted shirred bodice, oversized puffy sleeves and delicate ruffles on the skirt. She then paired her breezy maxi with a pair of gold block-heel pumps with an oversized crystal buckle, gold medallion necklaces and a pair of classic aviators. Swap the shoes for sandals and this is an outfit that could be just as appropriate for the beach, as it is for lunch with the former first lady.

Shirred dresses have become increasingly popular this summer thanks to brands like Rhode, Dôen and Sleeper, which are using it in their cult designs. If you're not exactly sure what a shirred dress is, it's when the fabric has horizontal lines of thin elastic thread stitched into it in order to draw the fabric together and create a stretchy, flattering panel that will snugly fit waists but also expand.

It's been 15 years since new Sex and the City episodes hit our screens, but undoubtedly, Carrie Bradshaw remains a major style inspiration. We've already noticed her favourite shoes making a comeback in 2019 and defined the pillars of her winter capsule wardrobe, but this latest Carrie renaissance has moved beyond the realms of fashion.

Yes, Carrie Bradshaw's hair has been making a comeback, with Instagram's most fashionable girls stepping out with her iconic waves. For reference—and for the true SATC fans—we’re talking Carrie curls circa Season 2 here. Arguably the most distinctive Bradshaw style, this hair is flat at the roots and wavy through the lengths—less volumised than her Season 1 curls and less styled than her Season 4 bob—for an effortless style that never looks too try-hard and errs on the right side of messy and dishevelled.

One could question whether this kind of scruffy, brushed-out style is the perfect combatant to really outré outfits: Would you agree that a crazy-bold ensemble looks all the more laid-back with the right kind of undone 'do? In addition, it can also add depth to a more bohemian vibe, such as the models seen at Chloé's surf-inspired S/S 19 show. But just how easy is it to get the look yourself? We asked top hairstylists to spill the beans on exactly how to get Carrie hair in the comfort of your own home and which products you should have on hand to maximise that cool-girl texture.

The most important thing about this Carrie Bradshaw look is to forget about perfection. The key to perfection, according to celebrity stylist Jay Birmingham. "Forget being overly neat. The charm is that slightly unkempt feel so try not to overly perfect this style." Similarly, Joico ambassador Bruno Marc Giamattei said that this hairstyle can really require as much or as little styling as you like: "The beauty of it is that unkempt feel, which is captivating."

There a few ways to get the look yourself. "One of the most simplistic ways is to tie your hair into medium sized buns when damp," Giamattei told us. "If possible, try to sleep with this style in overnight to give your hair adequate time to dry and mould into that waved shape." Come morning, simply untie your hair to reveal naturally disheveled hair.

If you're looking for a more distinctive wave, try plaiting your hair instead of twisting it into buns. "To create the flatter shape at the crown, make sure you don't begin to plait the hair until closer to the mid-lengths," Joico's Paul Watts advised us.

If you can't face the thought of sleeping with damp hair to get the look, heat-styling is another easy option. Jonny Long, co-founder of Lockonego salon, said you should first dry your hair with a nozzle to create shine. Once dry, use tongs or straighteners to add in waves. The key to the Carrie look, though, is to take a paddle brush and lightly brush out the waves.

The trick to keeping your hard work in place? "Scrunch your hair from the bottom with one hand, and mist in some hair spray at the same time," Birmingham said. "This will add even more volume and help to stop your waves from dropping down throughout the day."

The fashion pack have been favouring straight- and wide-leg jeans of late, but as for the celebrity set, they remain collectively loyal to one denim style in particular: skinny jeans.

We all know that the Duchess of Cambridge is the queen of re-wearing her royal wardrobe, whether her chosen item is a more affordable find from L.K. Bennett or Zara, or a luxe investment piece from Gucci or Alexander McQueen. She knows what she likes and how to subtly tweak any given item to inject a dash of newness. Sure, she's not going to start wild or complex layering, but in a simple switch up of shoes, jewellery, hair and bag choice, a classic (and recognisable) item can feel revitalised.

Case in point? Today's look from Kate as she stepped out solo to visit the D-Day exhibition at Bletchley Park. She chose to wear a sassy (see that thigh slit?) navy polk-dot 1940s-inspired dress that we saw her debut not so long ago. We're glad she's giving such a statement piece some extra time in the spotlight.

Alessandra Rich is one of fashion's most adored dress designers and has put K-Mids into a very reputable realm when she chose to wear this strong-collared, button-through dress back at the tail-end of last year for Prince Charles's 70th birthday party. However, the pictures the royal family supplied to the public at the time only revealed the top half of the DoC's look. Now we get to see the whole dress in full (and with accessories).

From the off, we could tell it was a piece from Brit designer Alessandra Rich. We’d recognize her retro-inspired items anywhere. But we knew Kate Middleton wasn’t the only celebrity to fall for this flattering, modest style…

Then it hit us. Back in June of last year, Sarah Jessica Parker wore it for a swanky soirée in NYC. Pairing it with sleek white courts, it was a look Carrie Bradshaw herself would have been proud to wear. Unlike SJP, who styled hers with a black belt, white pumps and an unbuttoned neckline, Kate chose a more tonal route today, opting for cornflower blue suede courts and a navy clutch. We happened to notice that the entire look beautifully matched her whopper of a sapphire engagement ring—never a bad idea.

It also proved to be a hit in May when Meghan Markle’s former Suits co-star Abigail Spencer chose the very same dress to see Meghan wed Prince Harry in May 2018. Who knows? Maybe she and Kate exchanged style notes post-ceremony.

As anticipated, the £1750 dress sold out some time ago, but there are still many Alessandra Rich dresses to be had, and one, in particular, that's quite similar. Somewhere after the early '00s, shoulder bags got a little lost at the forefront of fashion. Once perfectly nestled in the armpit of every stylish lady—from Sarah Jessica Parker to Gabrielle Union—the shoulder bag was perhaps deemed too practical. So instead, we toted. We clutched. We belted our bags. We even carried baskets in the crook of our arms. Meanwhile, the humble shoulder bag waited patiently for a triumphant return.

When I told my flatmate that Vogue had declared "the best bag of the season is somewhere in between the length of a can of hairspray and a landline phone," she laughed. She told me that outside of fashion, shoulder bags haven't gone anywhere. Case in point? Lorelei Gilmore. She wore shoulder bags all the way through seven seasons of Gilmore Girls and the Netflix special. Now that's commitment.

But experts in the fashion world insist shoulder bags are only now making a comeback. My friend who is a buyer says, "We have seen the rise of the shoulder bag to go along with the recent trend of '90s nostalgia."

"The shoulder bag offers the hands-free option," my friend told me. We saw this with the return of the Dior Saddle and Fendi Baguette but expect other classics to return, like Gucci's Jackie bag. For his spring/summer 2019 collection, Simon Porte Jacquemus (aka the man almost solely responsible for the biggest accessory trends of 2018: micro bags and that one giant hat) sent a massive bag down the runway that went viral. But alongside that bag were a number of—you guessed it—shoulder bags. Cue the Instagram set. Shoulder bags no longer live in the darkest corners of closets. They will be everywhere.

Whilst the glitzy smaller versions of the shoulder bag like the Fendi Baguette (loved by Paris Hilton, for example) have been at the beginning of this born-again trend, expect to see classic, bigger styles to rise in popularity too. To get ahead of the look now, we'd suggest channelling Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.

For further proof, here we have model Bella Hadid juggling life: holding onto her boyfriend, The Weeknd, and a bag of macarons. This was all made possible thanks to her hands-free shoulder bag. It's practical, chic and can sometimes hold a book without being bulky. So how are shoulder bags only just now coming back? What have we fashion people been doing to survive without them this whole time? I, for one, am ready for shoulder bags to come back and stay.

In all honesty, I’ve never been much of a Sex and the City fan, but as anyone who works in fashion knows, Carrie Bradshaw was (and still is) a major style force. Style Notes: In the summer, Carrie wears florals, but in the winter, it’s all about checks, plaids and tartans. Even a simple tartan scarf will add the right kind of kook to her cold-weather ensembles.

Style Notes: The fancier the skirt, the more likely Carrie is to wear it in the day (or night). She certainly doesn’t let the temperature stop her either, so dig out your party skirts and get to wearing them.

A few years ago when I moved to NYC, the words of Carrie Bradshaw echoed in my mind: “When I first moved to New York and I was totally broke, sometimes I would buy Vogue instead of dinner. I felt it fed me more.” And yes, I too found myself penniless at times but craving inspiration, which I filled by poring over the pages Vogue. I started watching Sex and the City back in the mid-2000s as much for the dream of one day living in Manhattan as for the fashion. The whole thing captivated me, as did Carrie Bradshaw, with her daring wardrobe choices and love for all things fashion. My personal style choices didn’t always align with hers exactly, but I always appreciated the risks she took in the name of style and how she lived and breathed fashion.

But now, what might have seemed "out there" or even "tacky" suddenly seems cool. I’ll blame it on the ever-present nostalgia in the fashion industry and its impulse to recycle decades-old trends. And right now, it seems like just the right moment for pieces from the early 2000s to start bubbling back up. Many of the trends Carrie Bradshaw wore are returning, and I have a hunch she would wear many of them again in 2018. Dior Saddle Bag

Carrie demonstrated her affinity for Dior saddle bags in the ’90s, and we know she would be into the logo versions that are popping up everywhere right now.

PVC Shoes

If there’s one thing Carrie is known for, it’s her love of shoes. There’s certainly no trend she hasn’t tried, and that includes PVC sandals.

Square Necklines

Carrie is clearly into square necklines, and so are we. They’re a subtle nod to the ’90s that we’re seeing everywhere.

Headbands

Headbands are back, and we envision Carrie wearing a version like these velvet or topknot styles.

Strappy Sandals

Here’s another shoe trend we could easily see Carrie wearing. Strappy sandals are trending at the moment and are poised to be the summer’s It shoe.

Minidresses

From hot pants to short hemlines, Carrie is on board for all things mini. Naturally, minidresses would be part of her summer attire for strolling around the streets of Manhattan.

We’ll be taking some cues from Carrie (as always) to help guide our summer outfit choices this year.

For children of the '90s, Sex and the City will always be a touchstone when it comes to clothes. The slip dresses! The fur coats! The slingbacks! The way Carrie wore a belt around her bare waist and what looked like a crown of thorns around her bun (that one definitely required a slightly more open mind), and the way Samantha wore fuchsia trouser suits with clip-on earrings!

There are Instagram accounts dedicated to the wardrobes of the famous foursome—@everyoutfitonsatc is full of Carrie-isms like, "My relationship is at a standstill so instead I'm evolving my look"—not to mention flourishes on the A/W runways that looked straight out of Patricia Field's style playbook. Toga's collection featured brooches pinned delicately at the throat and clustered on the lapels. It reminded me of Carrie's first foray into the Vogue office in a pinstriped suit with a paste brooch on her collar.

But it's not just SATC outfits that seem to inspire every few seasons. Take a deep dive through Sarah Jessica Parker's personal clothing choices circa 1986 and you'll be surprised by how, for a want of a better word, now they look. The Balenciaga-esque blazers that could fit her and then-boyfriend Robert Downey Jr. comfortably inside: check! The vintage-looking cowboy boots: check! She even wore scrunchies (not something her onscreen persona would condone, but big news among Scandi influencers right now).

This got me thinking about a theory—if you just wore clothes that SJP would have worn in the '80s, you'd pretty much look like Kendall Jenner or Gigi Hadid do now. They're both big fans of the bra top as an actual top—sorry, SJP did it first—and the room-for-two checked blazer. 1. The boxy blazer

The borrowed-from-my-boyfriend tuxedo blazer, the pristine tennis socks, the cat-eye sunglasses—it's a little bit Lady Di, and a lot what all the cool girls are wearing now.

2. The bra

Bella Hadid, Karlie Kloss and Kendall Jenner are today's poster girls for the bras-as-tops movement, but SJP beat them to it by roughly 30 years. The trick is to wears yours with a trouser suit—preferably one with a high-waisted bottom half and a roomy fit—so you can do the big reveal later in the evening when you've got a bit of Dutch courage.

3. The slip dress

Carrie was a pioneer of the "naked" dress (remember the beige number with the teeny straps she chose on her first official date with Mr. Big?), but SJP knows a thing or two about its cousin, the slip. It's totally fine to wear something you could have slept in if you add a blazer and a tousled updo, right?

4. The cowboy boot

Flats were an aberration to Carrie, but SJP likes to mix it up. This fringed suede jacket plus mid-calf-length cowboy boots combo should have equalled rodeo roadkill, but with SJP’s T-shirt dress and straw hat, it's somehow quite fabulous.

5. The leggings

Supermodels love swapping jeans for leggings, but SJP got there first. She could be going to aerobics or she could be going shoe shopping—we may never know.

6. The trench 

The trench coat refuses to go out of fashion, especially the oversized, hand-swallowing style put forward by SJP. Very 2018 Olsen twins, don't you think?

Sartorially speaking, Fearne Cotton and Sarah Jessica Parker are pretty far apart. Yes, they both like to experiment, but where the former is more rock 'n' roll, the latter is very New York. However, this week both women have adopted a penchant for wearing the same tights-and-shoes combo: a pair of fishnets with metallic heels. Of course, each wore this look in a completely different way. For Fearne, it was about sticking to her signature style, with a pair of metallic green Vivienne Westwood ankle boots and fishnets, paired with a silver miniskirt and black. Whereas SJP went for a signature demure-but-kooky stance with her tights and added a pair of metallic purple stilettos (from her eponymous shoe collection) and a floral dress. SJP's style is unwaveringly out there. Just look at her ability to print- and colour-clash. Fishnets add yet another dimension.
