I feel like this is a safe place to admit I've never owned a puffer jacket. Considering I live in the UK, where it's cold for more months than it is remotely warm, this seems crazy, right? There's a few reasons why I've swerved puffers year after year (even though I'm perpetually cold). The first reason being I've found a lot of them, well, ugly. And the second main reason being every time I've tried them on they seem to swamp my 5'4" frame. If there’s one thing we can rely on it is that Hailey Bieber will always be right on trend. Over the past few weeks, the Who What Wear team has noticed a particular trainer is popping up on our fashionable friends and celebrities alike, and of course Hailey is all over it. Enter Adidas' Samba, a flat silhouette which was designed primarily as a football shoe. Since being spotted on the likes of Bella Hadid and Lila Moss, the shoe has taken off, but Hailey’s pairing of the Adidas Samba and baggy jeans is one of the best combinations we’ve seen this season.

But it isn't just a shoe trend that Hailey got so right this week. In one fail swoop she's also nailed the puddle pant trend, opting to pair her Sambas with baggy, loose jeans that fall over the shoe and right to the floor. In true style icon fashion, Hailey's look pushes puddle pants to a whole new level, and pairing them with Sambas is a winning combination. Arket’s puffer coats have become somewhat of a cult classic in fashion circles over the past few years. In recent years I've been on my own hunt to find the perfect puffer coat, searching everywhere from Prada to Primark. And after months of trawling, I've finally settled on ARKET's long down coat, a style that already has a history of being extra popular. Back in February 2020, the shopping search engine Lyst revealed that amongst the biggest-selling trophy pieces of the season (many of which were expensive and designer), ARKET's perfect puffer made it into the top 10. With its simple cut, elegant and neutral colourways, handy hood, slits with popper fastenings on each side to adjust for more movement and roomy pockets, it ticks all of the boxes for what one needs from a practical coat—and at £249, the cost per wear over a series of cold winters speaks for itself.

Last year, I set myself the task to find the cosiest winter coat on offer. After a week of searching, I settled on an oversized puffer from Arket, which is made from recycled down and is quite possibly the warmest thing I’ve ever put on my body, and it has in fact remained a staple this year, too.

While we're still to see out the last few weeks of winter, we already find ourselves curating spring outfits. Of course, we're excited about the dresses we'll finally be able to take out of storage, the sandals that will require us to book in for the first pedicure we've had in months, and the basket bags we'll carry in the crook of our arms. Above all else, however, we're most looking forward to the jackets we'll be investing in. 

Owing to the fact we live in Britain, which is known for its changeable weather, jackets form an integral part of our spring attire. As such, we always keep our eyes peeled for the best styles to drop. Leave it too close to April, and we guarantee all the chicest-looking options will be long gone. 

For 2020, the jacket scene is certainly shaping up to be diverse. On one side, you have '90s-style blazers and safari jackets that all come in varying shades of beige. On the other, there are polished tweed textures. Then, slap bang in the middle is the newest take on the puffer jacket trend.

1. LEATHER BLAZERS

Style Notes: Leather blazers were all the rage in the early '90s, and for spring 2020, they've made a huge resurgence. Zara's option is ideal if you're keeping tabs on your purse strings. Though, Reformation's real-leather iteration proves tempting. 

2. TWEEDY TEXTURES

Style Notes: Bouclé has long had ties in fashion, thanks largely to Chanel, which keeps the jacket very much a part of its design DNA. However, it seems that 2020 is the year that other designers have given it a whirl, too, to very chic avail. Use it to dress up your go-to denim. 

3. SAFARI STYLES

Style Notes: Picking up where the worker jacket left off is the safari jacket. While very similar, the safari jacket comes in a palette of neutrals (with the exception of rust and green) and has a nipped-in waist, usually by way of a coordinating belt. Sleek but practical, it looks best worn over floral midi dresses with chunky boots.

4. PRINTED PUFFERS

Style Notes: Having made our peace with the fact that the puffer jacket will always make us feel the teeniest bit like the Michelin Man, we're now embracing more statement styles than before. The fashion set agree and have been wearing printed puffers on repeat.

5. QUILTED FINISHES

Style Notes: Having previously been considered as country-wear, cosy and cool quilted jackets are proving just as prevalent in urban settings this spring. Wear yours with a chunky knit and leather trousers now, then with denim shorts and simple jersey tops for summer festivals. It's what Alexa Chung would want.
