This month, ahead of the launch of her new makeup collection with Max Factor, we sit down with actor Priyanka Chopra, who's all too willing to reveal her most-trusted beauty buys, how she styles out a bad-hair day, and what she considers to be the ultimate beauty faux pas.

A bright lipstick!

Leave it alone!

You only have one product to use for the rest of your life—what is it? 

This is tough… I would have to say lipstick or lip balm.

What’s the best piece of beauty advice that you have ever received?

No matter what, wash your face before bed.

It’s a bad-hair day—what do you do?

Throw my hair in a topknot.

What is your signature fragrance?

I don’t have a signature fragrance. I use fragrance to evoke a mood. All of the characters I play, for example, have their own fragrance too. It’s actually a ritual for me to pick a fragrance for a character that I feel embodies her. Right now, I am wearing Cartier La Panthère.

Strong lips or a strong eye?

Depends on the mood and the look, but I’m really into a moody winged eyeliner right now.

You’re having your nails done—what’s your go-to colour?

Anything other than nude. When I’m on a job, my nails are almost always nude, so when I’m not on a job, I like to do something colourful and fun.

What is your beauty philosophy in a sentence?

Less is more.

What is your favourite lipstick colour? 

Golden Dust from my new collection with Max Factor. It's a pumpkin shade, which I love.

What’s your biggest beauty no-no? 

Not removing your makeup before you go to bed!

Candles, reed diffusers or nothing at all? 

Candles.

If you could share one piece of beauty advice, what would it be? 

I think it would be the importance of skincare before you apply makeup. I always took care of my skin, but when I started working with Pati Dubroff, she always prioritised my skincare before a makeup application, and the makeup just looked better.

What beauty product do you recommend to everyone? 

My new Max Factor collection, of course. Each shade is designed to flatter all skin tones.

Name one beauty product that is always in your handbag. 

My Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara.

Are you team dewy or matte?

Matte for lips and dewy for glowy healthy skin—I love Max Factor Miracle Pure Foundation for this finish.

One of my nail shades, especially Starry Night. The bold blue just pops!

Your worst hairstyle (or hair moment) ever…

I [had my hair] cut in a "lop" once, and looking back, it was a questionable look.

You have to wear your hair crimped or blue eye shadow for the rest of your life. Which do you choose?

Crimped hair.

Makeup primer—love it or hate it? 

I’m a big believer in priming the skin, especially for the red carpet. It keeps everything in place and even.

Confession time: How often do you clean your makeup brushes? 

Probably not often enough.

What beauty rule do you always break?

Are there beauty rules? I think beauty is a tool that allows you to express yourself and your creativity. We are all different, and what is right for me may not be right for someone else. So I don’t really believe in breaking beauty rules, because there aren’t any.

Would you rather have ultra-skinny brows or bleached brows? 

Bleached brows.

Which celebrity’s hair would you love to steal?

No one—honestly, I think my hair is pretty great.

Which era of beauty inspires you most? 

I think the '60s. The early part of this decade was all about elegant eyes, delicate shades, and the mid-part of the decade was dramatic with bold mod eyes. I feel like this really embodies me. I’m moody with my makeup and love to play and experiment with different techniques. So this feels like my era.

Eyelash curlers: Love them or hate them? 

Love.

Best beauty hack? 

Bowl of ice water if you don’t have any face tools! It shrinks the pores and chisels the face.

When it comes to celebrity makeup artists, Mary Phillips is basically considered royalty. She's responsible for some of the most iconic makeup looks of the past few years. I’m talking Jennifer Lopez’s bronzed and glowing Venice Film Festival look (yes, the one when she made her 2021 red carpet debut with Ben Affleck), Kendall Jenner’s most beautiful Met Gala moments and just about every Hailey Bieber makeup look I’ve ever saved on Instagram.

As someone who doesn’t find makeup application easy but also champions a natural-looking, fresh-faced look, I have been somewhat obsessed with Hailey Bieber’s makeup—it exudes health and radiance without ever appearing too contrived. And as her long-time makeup artist, if there is one person in this industry who knows the answer to the age-old beauty question of how to achieve naturally flawless-looking skin, it’s Phillips.

So when Hourglass gave me the opportunity to pick Phillips’s brain on all things makeup and skin, I knew that it was my one shot to get to the bottom of what really goes into her trademark fresh, glowing looks. I realised some time ago that the thing that sets Phillips apart from other celebrity makeup artists in L.A. is her ability to work with skin rather than against it, and I wanted to know her tips.

Unsurprisingly, I’ve been overthinking it for far too long. It turns out the secret lies in six very simple steps.

1. Prep the Skin

This is a makeup step that I often overlook (and almost always skip when I’m short on time). Phillips insists that prepping and priming the skin is key to a fresh, natural base. "A natural-looking glow always starts with prepped skin. I highly recommend using a skin tool, such as a gua sha or jade roller, after moisturiser. It helps with product penetration, increases blood flow and decreases puffiness before starting your makeup application,” she says. For an extra complexion-smoothing boost, Phillips also recommends using a tinted SPF formula in the morning: "It helps protect skin from UV rays and provides sheer coverage simultaneously.” 

And the skin prep doesn’t stop there. The key to an even complexion, Phillips says, is an oil-absorbing primer—but it’s no good just slapping it on all over. "Using a primer before foundation helps with visible pores, and I love the Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Primer for its skin-perfecting, blurring effect. Apply your oil-absorbing primer to the T-zone, leaving the skin on the high points of the face super hydrated. It’s the best way to tackle shine without sacrificing glow.”

2. Apply a Light Layer of Foundation

When it comes to foundation application, Phillips warns that going in too heavy can jeopardise your overall finish. "Over-application doesn’t look natural. Less is more. Start with a light layer of foundation so you can still see what areas need extra coverage with concealer,” she says.

Look for creamy foundations with light-to-medium coverage that melt into the skin rather than sit on top of it. Opting for a formula that's lightweight and delivers a subtle radiance (instead of a cakey, matte finish) will help ensure your natural glow shines through.

3. Apply Concealer Only Where You Need It

Mary Phillips is also makeup artist to Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

While some makeup artists recommend applying concealer before your foundation to get a full-coverage, long-lasting finish, when it comes to Phillips’s iconic fresh-faced looks, any step that risks over-application should be avoided at all costs. "I prefer applying concealer after foundation to ensure I am focusing only on the areas that need the extra coverage,” she reveals. "I apply it with a brush and blend it out with a sponge, setting with a light dusting of powder.”

When it comes to areas of concern like dark circles, she advises using a colour corrector rather than packing on concealer. "Using a colour corrector under a full-coverage concealer will help to minimise the appearance of dark circles and brighten the under-eyes at the same time,” Phillips reveals.

Similarly, when it comes to spots, it’s wise to keep things minimal. She advises, "I use a very small, flat brush and apply concealer directly to the area of concern. Once the concealer is dry, I lightly dust powder over it to set.”

4. Powder in the Right Places

You will have likely already noticed that Phillips is a fan of setting powders, and this isn’t something you see too often amongst makeup artists who are keen to get a glowing look. The secret, she says, is in knowing where to apply it. "Because I prefer a fresh-skin look that glows, I don’t like to use too much powder. It’s about balance; knowing where to powder and where to let the skin shine through,” she says.

According to Phillips, areas to apply powder include the under-eye area to reduce concealer creasing and fading as well as the T-zone to take down shine.

5. Apply Bronzer and Blusher

Mary Phillips is the makeup artist behind some of J.Lo’s most iconic beauty looks.

After you’ve nailed your base, it’s time to go in with some colour. "Once you have lightly set skin with powder, add bronzer and blush,” says Phillips. Cream formulas, she says, can be great options. "A cream blush is always great because you can apply it with your fingertips to add colour to cheeks, eyes and lips!” On top of this, cream formulas also tend to be more foolproof when it comes to blending, melting into the base you already have rather than sitting on top of it.

6. Add Glow to High Points Only

There’s no doubt that Phillips’s beauty looks rely on highlighter to amplify radiance, but the way in which it’s applied leaves you questioning whether there’s any product on the skin at all. Her top tip is to be very careful with where you apply your highlighter. "Be sure to add shine to the skin on the high points of the face, such as the tops of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and brow bone,” she says.

However, if visible pores are an area of concern for you, think carefully about where you add other glow-boosting products. "Products that aim to boost glow can make skin texture more pronounced, so I wouldn’t suggest using them in areas you are trying to minimise and blur,” she warns.

Enhance your natural curls or opt for a sleek ‘do, there is a handful of specific techniques to try. While wet hair’s popular appearance is on the red carpet and rather glamorous, the hairstyle can be translated into an everyday look. The ultimate benefit? Going with an easy wet hair look not only looks stylishly cool, but relieves damaged hair of hot tools. Bella does the silky slick back the best. Layer a considerable amount of gel to the crown of your hair to smooth it back leaving your ends loose and free.

Embrace Sofia's incredibly glossy style by playing with this half-up pony. Add extra product at the roots to create the ultimate wet illusion.

This gives me major early 2000's vibe when everyone was obsessed with the art of scrunching. It saved time and honestly, looked professionally done—a la Ashley Graham here. 

Don't want to over-do the gel? Loosely work the gel into your middle part creating the wet illusion without completely weighing your hair down. 

As the queen of wet hair, Kim nails this 'do by opting for thicker, fuller curls rather than loose beach waves. By alluding to a fullness in her wet curls, Kim's hair is far from unruly. Scroll threw a few of Kim's hair must-have products to create the ultimate sheen to her hair. 

Proof that your hair does not need to be down to pull off wet hair. First, comb gel through your straight middle part smoothing down your hair to each side. Complete the look by pulling your hair back into a low bun. Does it get any easier? 

This is a simpler wet look for Selena, however, she reveals that your hair doesn't have to look drenched in order to dabble with the trend. Opt for more of a damp look by gently wetting your natural hair texture and simply, letting it go. 

Like Bella, heavily gel your bangs back and allow your ends to be loose. Take a cue from Zendaya and go for curl to dress up your look into the evening.

Another glossy ponytail to flaunt wet hair. Try calming the ponytail with a fashionable braid and complete this hairstyle with a final pass of oil to add shine. 

Short hair? No problem. Strategically comb your bangs back, creating defined lines on the sides. By doing so, you create a tamed wet look. Pro tip: gently brush out a few fly aways in the front as Kaia does to loosen the look. 

Adding a headband is always a good idea. It's an easy trick to update wet curly hair. 

Another master of wet hair, Miley has been a true stan of the style. Her look is easy to execute, yet still refined. Gel your natural hair until it begins to look wet. Once you achieve the wet look, make sure to go back through and make sure there are no fly-aways. 

Ditch the middle part and slick your hair all the way back to create that 'middle school swim team hair.' Wear this wet hair look like Sofia in a cozy sweatshirt or dress it up with gold hoops and sequined number and you're ready for a night out. 

Though similar to Kaia's other wet hairstyle, if you have short hair, sometimes the smallest tweaks can make the biggest difference. Here, Kaia's bangs are softly gelled to the side, making for a softer wet style.

The Big Apple is currently hosting another New York Fashion Week, but as much as I love runway shows, the U.S. Open always has my full attention at this time of year. I've been known to sneak in tennis-related stories at every opportunity I get—but I'm far from the only fashion person who loves tennis. Meghan Markle and Anna Wintour are both attending the women's final match at the U.S. Open today to support Serena Williams, and both are seated in her player's box.

Having been friends for years, it came as no surprise that Priyanka received a much-coveted invitation to the royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. So what does one wear to the biggest event in one's social calendar? A designer favourite, Vivienne Westwood, of course! 

For the Met Gala in 2018, the theme of which was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, Priyanka wore a decadent velvet gown and gold headdress from Ralph Lauren.

After a good few days of speculation, including all the outfits in the run-up to the event, we’ve finally been given a glimpse of Sophie Turner’s wedding dress. Unsurprisingly, the bridal gown was designed by Louis Vuitton’s creative director, Nicholas Ghesquière, who also dressed the actress for the Met Gala and many high-profile moments before that. The designer revealed on Instagram early this morning that he was behind Turner’s wedding dress.

The floor-length dress was a classic ball-gown skirt with a band around the waist and fitted lace sleeves. While it’s definitely a more demure kind of design, the low neckline and open back made this the perfect style for a modern bride. Under the lace sleeves was a white bodice with cap sleeves (perhaps designed so the sleeves could be taken off and the dress transformed into the evening look?). We may have to wait a while to discover if that’s the case.

Turner married Joe Jonas in France for their second wedding after a surprise white chapel ceremony in Vegas in May 2019, where only a handful of the couple’s friends attended (including Diplo, who live-streamed the event). Before their big day, Turner and Jonas spent the past week in Paris with a small group of friends and family enjoying pre-wedding celebrations all over the City of Lights before heading to the countryside.

Lucky for us, we got to see Turner’s Parisian summer ensembles, alongside some stellar looks from her sister-in-law, Priyanka Chopra. As for the outfits the night before the wedding, an Avignon restaurant called La Mirande played host to her guests, who all looked ultra-glam in a series of all-white getups. We were particularly enamoured with Ashley Graham’s sassy beaded slip dress, while Sophie herself is rumoured to have worn red. Chic.

Whenever awards season or fashion week rolls around, there's one brand we always spot celebrities using to prep their skin. In fact, it's hard to scroll through Instagram and not seeing a celebrity wearing a 111Skin sheet mask or eye mask.

The People’s Choice Awards always bring about a unique red carpet experience. It’s a huge honour to be at the annual event, especially if you’re a nominee, so the fashion is dialed way up.
