Jeans and white trainers go together like salt and pepper—they’re one of those styling combinations that never really date. Now, of course, the exact way we wear them evolves from season to season, and the chicest take on the pairing has just arrived fresh from Cannes, courtesy of model Poppy Delevingne.

Stepping out in a pair of long-line straight-leg jeans, Poppy leaned into the denim silhouette that fashion people are backing hardest right now. Forget cropped jeans, which so many of us instinctively reach for once temperatures rise, or the barrel-leg styles that dominated last summer—this season, it’s all about relaxed, '90s-inspired straight legs.

And whilst slim-sole trainers are still having a major moment, Poppy took a more timeless, and arguably far more comfortable, approach, opting for classic gum-sole white trainers to carry her from the airport straight into the glamour of the South of France.

To complete the look, she layered on a striped knit, a leather jacket and a rich cognac-toned shoulder bag. With her jeans softly pooling over the tops of her trainers, Poppy's look was relaxed, understated and perfectly suited to Cannes’ elegant atmosphere.

As someone who possesses next to no makeup skills, I spend an impressive amount of time trying to copy other people’s faces. And no, I don’t mean that I sit at home following those hour-long YouTube tutorials that require a million shades. (I admitted defeat on those long ago.) Instead, I save Instagram looks of my favourite celebs looking their understated, natural, glowing best and analyse every aspect of their makeup so that I can give it a go myself.

Only I never get it quite right, and I think there’s a very valid reason for it (besides the fact that I’m useless, of course). You see, the sort of natural-looking, no-makeup makeup aesthetic that I lean toward is actually incredibly tricky to pull off. The whole premise of the look is that you shouldn’t really be able to tell where the makeup is at all. And frankly, when I’m trying to decode looks painted by expert hands that have spent years perfecting the art of disguise, I stand no chance.

So in a bid to get to the bottom of what makes a really great natural look, I decided to scroll through my Saved folders to see who, exactly, is behind these seemingly unachievable, chic looks. Painting the faces of basically every celeb whose makeup I swoon over, from Alexa Chung and Poppy Delevingne to Nathalie Emmanuel and Jodie Comer, Florrie White was undoubtedly the makeup artist I needed to speak to. So for half an hour, I grilled her on every tip and trick she has up her sleeve to achieve the ultimate no-makeup makeup look, and this is everything she had to share.

1. Start With Skincare

"It’s really important to invest time in your skincare. When I work on models and actresses, I spend longer prepping their skin than I do applying makeup. For me, it’s important to wash your face and give it a massage for a few minutes. A lot of people still don’t cleanse their faces at night, and I try to explain to them that it’s like eating off of a dirty plate. It’s all about priming yourself for the next morning. If your skin is in its optimum state, the products go on so much better.”

2. Get Mixing

"I apply more concealer than I do foundation. When I’m working with concealer, I always add in an aqueous cream. For clients, I usually prep skin with CeraVe products and also mix them. I do a pump of CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Serum, a swatch of a few different concealer shades and mix it all together to get the perfect match. I doubt anyone has time for that in everyday life, but you can get very similar results if you have clean skin and apply your serum and cream before doing your makeup. That way, you have a really creamy base for your concealer to melt into the skin and keep some of its natural texture. Salma Hayek taught me to put creamy concealer on around the eyes, wait one or two seconds, leaving it to go a little tacky, and then blend it in. It gives it time to set.”

3. Groom Brows 

"I think grooming your brows and filling them in is important, but it’s about moving away from the graphic, heavy Instagram look. I brush up the brows and add two tiny little brush-like lines in the roots at the front. Get a product that has a waxy, angled pencil on one end to avoid hard lines and a spoolie on the other end. I love Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil.”

4. Get Curling

"Eyelash curlers are really underrated. A lot of people don’t know that when you’re curling your lashes, not only does it create the effect of long lashes and lift, but it allows more light to catch the eye and makes them sparkle a bit more. My favourites are Kevyn Aucoin. They have a red rubber strip that allows you to actually see the lashes and get close to the root. Then I just wiggle some mascara into the roots only. That way you don’t have full mascara lashes. It’s just creating a nice frame for the eyes.”

5. Reach for Sticks

"I love cheek sticks. My go-tos are the Clinique Chubby Sticks. For contour, I just do stripes from the hollows of the lips to the hairline and then under the jawline. Then you can go ahead with a highlight stick too. I also always use a brown shadow stick or kohl pencil for the eyes. You can literally just rub your finger on the top of the stick, dot it on the outer corners and then just blend it in. It’s the perfect quick cheat to define the lash line.”

6. Lighting Is Key

"The key thing is that people need to re-educate themselves with how to apply highlight. Makeup shouldn’t be a paint-by-numbers thing. We’re forgetting the artistry. My recommendation is to do your makeup in one well-lit mirror, and then go into another room and catch yourself in another mirror. That way you can see if you want to add anything else. If you have clean, moisturised skin, it’s so much easier to see where the natural light bounces off, and that’s where you should be applying your highlight. Mother Nature is rarely wrong.”

7. Swap Lipsticks for Balms

"Mixing lip liners with balms allows you to even out the shape of your lip and add a little bit of colour without looking too ‘done.’ It’s sort of a cheat. Even better are tinted balms, like the Dr. Lipp ones that just give you a little sheen.”

8. Always Carry an Eyeliner

"It’s quite clever to carry two or three products that can elevate your day look into something more done. Applying an eyeliner to your waterline and then scrunching your eyes up makes eyes look a bit lived-in and French-girl cool. I also always carry a nude or red lipstick in my bag to add over liner or balm. It’s always fun to have a little pot of glitter, too!”

Any recent set of street style images can prove it: Chanel's bouclé jackets, while never out of style, are particularly in fashion's good books right now. Another year, another stellar Glastonbury. While we love the festival for its music, much like any other big event on the calendar it's also a place for some supreme A-list fashion spotting. But this year there were no flower crowns, no impractically long maxi dresses dragging in the mud, or any other silly kind of attire. Instead, celebs were opting for a much more practical approach to their festival-wear. From Poppy Delevingne in a denim miniskirt and hoodie to Rita Ora wearing a cagoule, this was truly the year that the A-list did festival normcore.

A shearling jacket, a hoodie, tea dress and hiking boots? Why, we were wearing this at the weekend too. 

On Poppy Delevingne: Coach Moto Hiker Boots (£375).

While Ora might be going for the more adventurous approach with the fishnet tights, she's still wearing a rather sensible waterproof over the top (we're calling it the Balenciaga effect). As for Mary Charteris, the leather jacket, denim skinnies and wellies are classic festival attire. 

Laura Whitmore opts for denim cuts-offs, a silk shirt, bare legs and wellies. But we've really got our eyes on that incredible leopard-print handbag.

Alexa Chung is undoubtedly the queen of festival dressing. Once again she wins with this look that includes a classic Barbour, The Smiths T-shirt, PVC trousers, and Hunter wellies.

Another perfectly sensible outfit, this time from Edie Campbell. Shearling jacket, T-shirt, black trousers and a bag that leaves your hands free to hold onto your drink. 

A dress that covers you up but also gives you room to breathe should the weather get a bit warmer? Once again, Zara Martin, like the other A-listers at Glastonbury, has opted for a casual and utterly practical ensemble—10/10.

While Kate Moss's younger sister opts for the tried-and-tested festival attire of shorts and a top, the pretty white blouse gives it an edge. 

A catsuit doesn't always have to be bold and patterned; in fact, it can be much more wearable as proven by Daisy Lowe's black version here. Simply pop a bomber jacket over the top. 

Another brilliantly normal outfit from Poppy Delevinge at this year's Glastonbury. A bomber, a sweatshirt, skinny jeans and wellies is our new go-to festival look. 

Suki Waterhouse knows a good bargain when she sees one, which is why she's chosen a playsuit from Urban Outfitters for her festival get-up. Pretty yet practical (as in, not dragging in the mud).

Black skinny jeans, a black vest top, and a spot of rainbow fringing embraces the festival trend without going too far (flower crowns, we're looking at you). 

Stop right there and just admire the fact that Alexa Chung is wearing a Fonzie T-shirt. Accompanied by a black hoodie, denim shorts, and a bomber, this might just be the most normal festival outfit of the lot.

Nestled within an ultra-glam corner of Palm Springs, Poppy Delevingne has just launched her latest collaborative collection with swimwear label Solid & Striped, hosting a chic party with American e-commerce giant Shopbop.com. Well, where better to showcase the picnic-blanket ginghams and blue-and-white colour palette of the new drop than in the glorious Californian sunshine?

Anyone acquainted with Poppy's Instagram account will know just how much of a jet-set glamazon she is. From private helicopter jaunts to a wedding marathon that spanned the globe, she is no stranger to packing up a suitcase for any given location—and looking mighty good when she gets there. WHO WHAT WEAR UK: Are you a capsule packer when it comes to your holiday wardrobe? 

POPPY DELEVINGNE: I’m quite a chaotic packer, and I never usually think too much about it. I choose my favourite things, a mixture of high street and designer, then enjoy playing dress up when I get there.

WWW UK: Do you have a favourite suitcase? 

PD: Can I have two? Mulberry and Globe-Trotter. I love to mix 'n' match. 

WWW UK: What do you think is the vital thing about finding the right swimsuit? 

PD: For me, it's all about the fit. I need a swimsuit that I can do cartwheels in!

WWW UK: How would you describe the differences between your holiday and regular wardrobes? 

PD: On holiday, I never want anything too fussy. It's all about throwing something on and feeling sensational. The eyelet hooded robe from my collection with Solid & Striped does exactly this. When I'm working and going from city to city, I opt for pieces with more structure—I so appreciate beautiful tailoring nowadays.

WWW UK: What do you take on the plane as your survival kit?

PD: As soon as I get on the plane, no matter where I'm headed, I head straight to the bathroom and give myself a little mini-facial. I'll spend 10 minutes in there adding all the lotions and potions until I'm a slippery seal, and then I'll sit down and get to my e-mails. Sisley does an amazing hydration mask, and MV Organic does a beautiful rose water mist.

WWW UK: Do you have a place in the world wear you always feel happiest? And if so, what do you wear there?

PD: The English countryside with my husband, where I tend to wear his clothes or spend my entire time in the bath. I'm all about getting cozy.

WWW UK: Are there style no-nos that you embrace on holiday?

PD: For me, the beachier the hair, the better. I welcome beach hair with open arms on holiday. Au naturel is key.

What to wear? This predicament is greatly heightened when the occasion in mind is your wedding day. Fashion editors are not immune to the bridal pressure cooker either; if anything, it adds more gravity to people’s expectations. The lead-up to my wedding involved the usual whirlwind of questions facing a newly engaged woman: What dress would I go for? How would I wear my hair? Which designer would I choose? The hunt was on for the dream dress but it just didn’t go as well as I’d hoped.

Being curvy, tall and a lover of carbs, I couldn’t imagine myself in something slinky, nor did I want to go down the meringue route. I made multiple appointments to try on wedding gowns but my heart didn’t flutter. Quite the contrary, I felt doomed to look like an avalanche of crêpe de chine. I just couldn’t find a 360-degree fit for my shape that oozed my style. As options narrowed and lunch breaks were filled up with snow flurries of manic dress searches, I called it quits on bridal pret-à-porter. The dress just didn’t exist. Yet.

The haute pursuit begins! If something is classed as couture, then it means that a piece is made-to-measure for your body. You can choose a designer dress from a collection and have it fitted exclusively to your shape. Wonderful, but what if you want to go one step further and design your own garment? One could save up £200,000 and hit the marble halls of Paris where an exclusive design is made for you from one of the prestigious haute couture fashion houses, but considering there's a minority of regular global customers, this is unlikely for most.

If you don't own a yacht or have six digits to spare, then fear not, another option is available. You could find a British-based dress designer costume designer who can make a gown especially for you. Some call it design couture—a process that includes a toile of your body, an exclusive design, a garment made in-house, and personal fittings to underscore the design process. Bridal-designers-cum-courtiers are like gold dust because only a select few fashion houses make one-of-kind gowns; the industries main focus is on ready-to-wear. I found the right one via recommendations from friends at Brides magazine, but some determined Google searches would unearth your local options.

Who What Wear UK: There’s so much to organize for a wedding day. How important is it to share information about the event planning with the dress designer?

Anita Massarella: It’s very helpful to know as much as possible. I like to get a background of the bride’s wedding vision, and if there’s a storyboard or Pinterest link to ideas then that helps me to get a sense of the couple’s personality.

WWW UK: What questions do you often ask the bride about the wedding plans?

AM: Is the day going to be formal or more relaxed? In a grand venue or outdoors? Home or abroad? Even if the bride is still forming a plan for her big day, it’s helpful to know the wider context so that together we can create a suitable design for the season. As soon as the colour theme for the venue is decided, it’s important to inform your dress designer so that it can be reflected in little flourishes on the garment, if at all.

WWW UK: It’s hard to know what credentials to look out for in a fashion house or dressmaker. How do you identify where to go?

AM: If you cannot find what you want in ready-to-wear (i.e. off-the-peg collections) then having something designed uniquely for you is a great option. Enquire if the designer can offer exclusive designs or to what extent they customise dresses. We create one-of-a-kind couture dresses but not all places do. It's also okay to ask how many years of experience the designer has. Do read the client testimonials on their social media and website; it’s clear when a brand has a good reputation. You ideally want a team that can deliver the entire package: create an exclusive design to suit you, produce the dress pattern, make the dress in-house and provide the professional fittings.

On Kate Moss: John Galliano Haute Couture veil.

WWW UK: Where do most of your brides get their dress ideas from?

AM: Mainly Instagram, Pinterest or cut-outs from society events in the back of Vogue, Tatler etc. I’ve noticed that when people look at photos from formal events, like polo or Ascot, then it’s easier to see a range of different clothing designs worn by real people with varying figures. It can be less daunting than looking at models.

WWW UK: Once you’ve found the right person to collaborate with and to make your dress, what’s the best way to kick-start the design process?

AM: You don’t need to know the fabric or design terminology, a good designer can interpret what you want by the way you describe what you like. For example, an experienced designer will be able to tell from a photo if the bride wants something soft, bias-cut and clings to the body, and billowing chiffon coming from the back of it, or if the structure of the dress needs to boned, corseted, stiff dress etc.

WWW UK: There are so many different fabrics to choose from. How do you pick the right one?

AM: Identify how you would like your dress to move and sit on your body. If you want it to sway and flow, then chiffon is perfect for that. If you want a stiff dress then gabardine holds its shape; but this where the designer's expertise comes in. Just remember that the style of the dress needs to work with the choice of fabric.

WWW UK: How do you get ideas into one cohesive design?

AM: Begin with an outline of a body sketched on a piece of paper. Drawing out ideas is a great starting point. I tend to go step-by-step from talking about what neckline would suit the client to the favoured sleeve length, how it fits the waist etc. At each stage, you need to consider how the design works as a whole and how to keep it all in proportion with your shape.

WWW UK: When the design is agreed, what’s the next step?

AM: The next stage is finalising which fabrics will be used in the lining, for the main body of the dress. This process involves looking at lots of fabric samples with your designer and exploring which shades suit your complexion. I go as far as including the bride in choosing the very buttons and hand-picking the beads that will be sewn on! You can decide which beads, what colours, what shade, what size! If you’re making a dress from scratch, you can even cherry-pick embellishments or fabrics that suit the shade of your eyes.

WWW UK: How can a bride get the most out of dress fittings?

AM: Wear a really good fitting bra, and the heels that you are going to wear on the day (or of a similar height) because that will affect your posture. A good designer will offer you the opportunity to make adjustments at your fitting. Do take the opportunity to amend the design slightly or be more bold with decisions, like lowering a neckline slightly or exaggerating the silhouette of the dress by asking for the fabric to be nipped in a little.

WWW UK: On a second fitting, is it a good idea to bring the extra outfit details?

AM: Absolutely! The second fitting is where you can road test all of the elements of your look to see what works. If you’re having a hair trial then come in for a fitting with the hair and makeup trial. It’s also a good chance to try out the veil to make sure all the final pieces come together. If you are having a tryout for your bouquet, bring it in at this point. Then you can check that everything is perfect. Don’t be afraid to point out details that you want to be tweaked. And when you have your final fitting, do bring a bottle of chilled champagne and your best friend and/or your mother to soak in the fun of it all!

Decked out in Chanel couture, Delevingne revealed everything from her ideal day in New York City to her favourite drink (beer, to our surprise!). But the best part of it all? She opened up about what she just can't live without during the crazy fashion week period. You might want to take notes...

“[I always pack] a sense of humour, eye drops. You need some great staples, like a pair of leggings, maybe some YSL ankle boots, a good masculine, minimal jacket, then some good tees from someone like James Perse. A great red lipstick from somewhere like Topshop, I always wear Rio Rio Red. Maybe a Tom Ford Flamingo Pink. Or CHANEL does a really good one called Lune Rousse which I really love. [I also always carry] a vast supply of hair ties, I love nothing more than a topknot. Lip balm! Music, I always want to be dancing. I want to dance through my life so I take an iPod with me everywhere...One second its really aggressive rap, and the next second its All Saints, and the next second it’s Kings of Leon. It’s kind of intense."
