While online shopping is the ultimate luxury, many items are much easier to shop for in person. Denim is high on that list. Sizing can be tricky, especially when you're curvy and looking for the style that flatters you the most. There are so many cuts and styles to choose from, and every body type is different.

Luckily for all of us, in 2024 there are a number of different brands, both high-street and high end, that offer jeans that fit well, look stylish and boost confidence all year round. We spoke to a number of different influencers to help us find the best denim styles for curvy body types. Below, they share their picks for the best denim styles for curvy women.

Sara Brown says, "One brand I go to for wide-leg jeans time and time again is Lucy & Yak. I especially love their wider leg styles “Delores” and “Cole”, which are available in a mix of light to mid washes and black. Their denim is made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton which is also deliciously soft to wear.

Some styles also feature a little bit of elastic at the side of the waistband to help with ease, meaning you don’t feel too squeezed if your body might be more bloated that day. 3. Skinny Jeans

When speaking to the Who What Wear US team, Ketara Milian, one of the winners of Good American's Open Talent Casting spoke about how much she loved the brand's skinny jeans. "Finding good jeans as a plus-size woman can be equivalent to going through an obstacle course", she says.

4. Printed Jeans

Sara says, "I'm very appreciative of the more maximalist denim Simply Be has provided us over recent months. When I had been sized out of the metallic denim or animal print jeans from brands like Damson Madder and Ganni, Simply Be have been the first to make them in my size. I’ve just touched back down on UK soil after my first sunny break this year, and whilst our British weather is taking its time to turn up the heat, a week in the Mediterranean has reminded me of my summer essentials. I’m talking about those pieces of clothing that help you live happily and comfortably throughout the hotter season whilst also looking fabulous. 

At any size, it’s likely you have a different winter and summer wardrobe, but from being plus-size (a UK 24 to UK 26), I’ve found that there are a few extra things that the warm weather ensures I think about. Myself and my bigger-bodied peers are chatting about chaffing, FUPA coverage and how to wear less fabric whilst still supporting bigger boobs. Sounds familiar? Read on for my hacks and top tips for dressing this summer and every summer.

1. Natural Fibres

Firstly, let’s talk about fibres. I want to encourage you to start rummaging for the side labels in clothes and clicking on "product details” drop-down boxes when you’re shopping online. When it’s warm, you need breathability, and natural fibres are your friend. Although I prefer to avoid synthetic fibres all year round, I find it particularly important in the summer. Without getting too sciencey, natural fibres have a hollower structure, meaning they can absorb heat and perspiration and release it into the air. Heat and sweat then pass through the fabric, allowing you to regulate your temperature rather than trapping it underneath like synthetic fabrics do. Linen, cotton, silk and viscose are the fibres I look out for. I’m also pretty obsessed with the look of linen and the relaxed summer vibes it gives off. 2. Great Swimwear 

When it comes to swimwear, I never stick to one style. For the sake of your tan lines and for your comfort, I think it’s always important to pack around three different variations. I find myself wearing smaller and smaller bikinis as the summer or my holiday goes on, as I become used to showing more skin, and I ultimately only care about levelling out my tan lines (sensibly with plenty of SPF, of course). 

My new brand obsession is Youswim, a UK-made swimwear brand that creates pieces in two very flexible sizes covering UK 6 to UK 28. This year, Youswim has added Stretch II to its size range. This is the larger of its two sizes, which now means people up to a size UK 28 can wear the designs. The brand also stated that it’s continuing to work on more fits and sizes, so I’m hopeful we’ll see further increases in the range. I have a couple of the brand’s bikinis, and they’re so soft and comfortable. I highly recommend!

A triangle bikini is a staple, and I wholeheartedly believe, no matter what size or shape you are, you can wear as teeny a bikini as you want to. One of my favourite brands for a triangle set is We Are We Wear, another UK-based brand founded by two women that I used to work with on the design team at ASOS. Founder Natalie has specialised in lingerie and swim design for over a decade so really knows her stuff. They’re passionate about making their brand more and more inclusive, stocking sizes XS to 3XL (UK 4 to UK 30) and working towards genderless silhouettes. 

If you’re looking for swimwear with more coverage and support for swimming in, I would suggest trying out Fabletics. The brand has pieces in sizes XXS to 4XL (a UK 4 to a UK 28-30). I love the look of the higher neckline, zip-front bikini tops and swim shorts, especially for when I’m swimming in my local sea pool in Margate. 

Another brand shout-out goes to Alpine Butterfly Swim. It’s a US-based luxury swimwear brand, and its quality is incredible! It designs really fun styles of swimwear and cover-ups that are unlike what I’ve seen before available in this size range. The brand offers sizes XS to 6XL, which equates to a UK 4 to UK 42. 

Just before I share my swimwear selection, I need to share my favourite bikini hack. If, like myself, you have a flatter bum but a bigger belly, wear your bikini bottoms back to front. This gives you more coverage at the front and a little cheekier bit of less coverage on your bum. I pretty much do this every time I wear a bikini now, but of course, you can always switch it back around for a different fit. It’s just great to have more options from one garment.

3. Summertime Support

As it heats up, we’re wanting to wear fewer layers and less fabric, but this comes with its own set of issues. If you’re plus-sized, it’s likely you have a bigger bust or chest, too, so how can you get enough support from your underwear to wear skinny straps or no straps at all? It’s also unlikely that you’ll want to keep wearing tights, so how can you prevent chaffing whilst wearing the dresses you want to? 

One way I’m tackling the strap situation this summer is by not wearing a bra altogether, but I absolutely need some boob support to feel comfortable. I’ve been trying out Manners London. Sally, the founder and self-proclaimed "titty witch,” creates pieces in sizes UK 4 to UK 36 made from thick jersey that hugs your body enough to also support your boobs. Manners offers easy staple styles in classic colours alongside bolder prints. I’ve recently been wearing the brand’s crop vest top, and it has been freeing to wear something without the stress of bra straps on my shoulders. Next up, I want to try its halter-neck top and square-neck vest.

When navigating strappy dresses, sometimes I’ll choose to wear a bikini top instead of a bra for support. A string bikini can work well underneath a halter neck or if you’re wearing something with cut-outs on the sides. I’ll simply try to find a bikini top in a similar colour to the dress or top so it blends in easier. 

If I’m wearing something slinkier, a bias-cut slip dress or a body-hugging knitted dress for example, I like to wear shapewear. I know shapewear isn’t for everyone, and it definitely isn’t a must, but I love it. It gives me a better posture, clothes seem to hang smoother, and it generally makes me feel secure and supported. I also turn to it for protection against thigh chaffing. In my lingerie drawer, I have an arsenal of shapewear, ranging from lighter support to firm. In this round-up you’ll find my long-standing favourites along with some newer styles I want to try. One final tip… Invest in some anti-chaffing balm. Mine has revolutionised my summer wardrobe, and I’m finally enjoying summers of miniskirts again!

Confession: All I can think about at the moment is my spring/summer wardrobe. It might be too chilly to fully embrace it right now, but I’m longing for those jacketless days, lusting after warm sunsets with friends and prepping for a sunny season of joyful occasions. There’s no denying that the coming months bring so many opportunities to get dressed up and feel a little fancy, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably already planning what to wear. 

However, anyone above a size 18 knows the frustration of finding the perfect dress, then realising the brand doesn’t make your size. (Honestly, brands, expand your sizes—you’re missing out on my money, honey!) I’m a UK size 24/26, and I’m absolutely obsessed with hunting down the best pieces available in plus sizes. 

Whether you’re going to a summer wedding, a garden party or your friend’s 30th birthday weekend away or on a special date night, I’m hoping this selection of event dresses can help you with your search. Whilst I, of course, tried and tested some of those long-standing plus-size-friendly brands like ASOS Curve, River Island and Marina Rinaldi, I also wanted to shout about some of the brands that have entered my wardrobe recently. In the above image I'm wearing Rixo, another of my go-tos for statement dresses. Over the last few years, the brand has been working hard to expand its size range, and it now offers plenty of stunning pieces up to a UK size 24 (which I think is often a generous fit). Rixo has just opened its incredible flagship store in London. This means that as a plus-size person, you have the rare opportunity to walk into a store and try on clothes there and then. To make this even better, the brand also has an alteration booth in its store, so if the fit isn’t quite right, you can easily get a piece tweaked. 

Alongside these brands, my other current favourites for dresses are Olivia Rubin for colourful luxury pieces, Mary Benson for British-made fabric-filled dresses and the amazing Mimine AG for the ultimate premium-quality plus-size occasionwear. As for high-street brands, I keep my eye on M&S, Mango and Topshop Curve.

1. Karen Millen Knitted Dress

Style Notes: My friends are probably sick of me telling them how much I love a knitted dress, but I do—I love a knitted dress! I’m so here for the combo of comfort and style. I love the fit flexibility you get with knitwear pieces, and they always seem to hang with a lovely weight. This dress is made from silky smooth yarn and is incredibly soft to wear. It’s also quite a fine knit so shouldn’t be too warm. I love the abstract marble-style print and the zesty colours. This dress also comes in a pink and black colourway if lime and navy aren’t your thing. Karen Millen has quite an extensive range of plus-size options, and I would suggest trying them out if you’re looking for a more premium high-street item.

2. River Island Pink Midi Dress

Style Notes: I picked this dress out as a colour-blocked option. This would make a fabulous wedding guest look with its frill sleeves and bold hue. With the shirred-back waistband making it comfortable to sit and spend all day in, you could put this on in the morning for the ceremony and still feel happy dancing in it at midnight. I love where the neckline hits, as it makes it easy to find a bra to wear with it. And those ruffles… Need I say anymore?

3. RaeVynn Sequin Dress

Style Notes: I’m a firm believer that sequins are not just for Christmas or festivals. Their statement-making, shimmering joy deserves to be enjoyed all year round. Silver sequins are a classic, and I especially love the different-sized discs used on this dress. It gives me Paco Rabanne vibes. This dress is probably the sexiest of the bunch I’ve picked out for you, as it has a high slit at the side and open sides with ties. I’ve paired it with a sheer layer underneath to enable me to wear a bra with it, but I think it’s time to invest in some super-strong boob tape so I can wear this in its sexiest original form. Imagine this dress on the dance floor or shimmering during golden hour when you’re walking to dinner on holiday. I’m not saying it’s perfect for every occasion, but having said that, think about it layered with a crisp white shirt—so fabulous!

4. Never Fully Dressed Crochet-Print Dress

Style Notes: I was drawn in by the print of this dress but was won over by the embroidered details. I love the added texture. With crochet set to remain a popular trend this summer, I love how Never Fully Dressed has taken that technique and turned it into this colourful print. When it’s warm, I become a little obsessed with natural fibres, so I love the fact this dress is 100% cotton, making it more breathable and cooler to wear. Personally, I’ll be pairing this with even more crochet, a crochet bag and maybe even a crochet hair accessory. I’m a maximalist, and that’s how my brain works, but if you’re into a more pared-back style, this would look stunning paired with all-white accessories for a fresh summer-occasion outfit.

5. River Island Pink Ruffle Minidress

Style Notes: This dress might not be for everyone, but there’s no denying it’s a statement. In fact, it’s a statement I really want to make. Bigger bodies can wear things that make them even bigger—take up the room you deserve! If I saw this dress on a size 10, I know that I would be obsessed, so I’m super excited to see it in a plus-size range too. The mini length along with the racer-style straps give this pouffy dress contrast, and I love its vintage feel. You can really live your true Barbie life in this dress.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved fashion. I would always watch my mum getting ready to go out, totally fascinated by her and the creative way she would put outfits together. Even at a young age, I knew she was incredibly stylish. During my formative teenage years, I would always ask to borrow my mum’s clothes from the ‘80s and at only 11 years old I had already decided that my ambition in life was to become a fashion designer in order to make my own creations. I simply adored clothes but as I travelled through the secondary school system, disordered eating put paid to that passion and my dream of pursuing a career in the industry started to fizzle out. I struggled to accept my body and did not like the way I looked in clothes—putting on any outfit, it didn’t matter what, made me feel terrible.

Societal pressures and long-established ideals cemented the negative views I had around my weight and I battled to appreciate what I had. When clothes simply wouldn’t "fit” in the way I needed them to, it was yet another blow and I would dress to conceal and hide instead. There are lessons or old-fashion style tips that I still have to actively un-learn today: Wearing black is slimming! Choosing vertical stripes rather than horizontal ones is more "flattering”! Cellulite should not be seen! This kind of subtle but pervasive conditioning isn’t based in truth and it’s very easy for it to rear its ugly head, but my relationship with fashion has changed over the past few years since I started modelling and worked hard to overcome my disordered eating.

So now, when I wear an outfit—any outfit—that in itself is a statement and middle finger to the outdated view of what women of a certain size or body shape should or shouldn’t be seen in. It’s other people who might not be comfortable with my choices, not me. So I’ll confidently wear crop tops, dresses that hug my belly or hemlines that show my legs or big, round bottom. I want to walk into a room and be recognised first for my personality and then for my outfit!

Perhaps because of the lack of fashion options available to me in my youth, my personal style is more closely tied to my hair. I shaved it off in 2022 because I changed my hairstyles a lot and I always have since the age of 16, I also wanted to make a statement and push against the norm. As a Black woman, I see my hair as my crown—the perfect finishing touch to top off any look. In fact, it often acts as the starting point for my style direction, and that’s why I often change the colour of my hair. I feel compelled to switch it up to the colour that is calling to me, and a lot of the time that completely clashes with my wardrobe—a fashion tactic that resonates with me.

As a ‘90s child whose mum dressed them in the loudest colours and patterns, it’s no surprise that I lean towards mismatched and bold combinations today. You could call my aesthetic dopamine dressing, although I’d argue I was blazing that trail well before it became a hashtag on social media. Every day my mood influences what I wear and vice versa—I know that I can be boosted by a well-chosen outfit. 

I’m between a size 18, 20 and 22, so I find shopping on the high street a frustrating and limiting experience. Before I began modelling in early 2017 there were even less trendy options for plus-size women and although the range is starting to improve, I've never been one for following fashion trends anyway which is what lower-priced clothing revolves around. I tend to find my best pieces online or in charity shops, and I do my best to shop as sustainable as I can—I’ll never buy an outfit I can’t re-wear or re-style. Comfortable shoes are my go-to (Prada loafers are elite but a good adidas or Converse pair of trainers do nicely) I have a big love for bags, and I’m now fortunate enough to own a pretty great collection of designer styles—each one means something to me as I have bought them as a gift to myself after accomplishing something major. A Prada re-edition leather bag is a great everyday choice; my quirky Diesel bag is like an instant hit of joy, and I was lucky enough to be gifted Burberry’s Lola, which is fast becoming my new favourite. Statement pieces are essential to my collection but so are my all-important gold jewellery pieces. A Tessa Metcalfe rose quartz ring and a couple of meaningful chain necklaces—one rose quartz (I love this crystal because it is directly related to the heart chakra and I am always aiming to vibrate on a frequency of love) and two others that say Scorpio AF and South London.

Even if all the brands and retailers haven’t caught up yet, fashion and feeling stylish is available for everyone and the gates are no longer kept by straight-size people only. I believe we can all wear the aesthetic we want and we should be allowed to feel comfortable in anything we put onto our bodies—don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

You wake up, you’re running late, and you need to look put together quickly. I would advise in these moments that you reach for a co-ord. This is the quickest way to create an instant outfit in two easy steps. From pyjama suits to crochet twin sets, there’s something about pairing up matching pieces that just looks chic and considered.

The flexible fit possibilities of co-ords make them perfect for plus-size bodies. Weight distribution differs for everyone, but as we grow, these differences get bigger. You might find that your weight is held predominantly in your bum or your stomach, or maybe you have a bigger bust or broad back. However your body is proportioned, the fact that a co-ord is split into two but gives you one whole look is perfect. You can easily buy a bigger-size top and smaller trousers or vice versa to fit you perfectly.

Recently, I’ve also spotted more brands creating co-ords in the same print across different fabrics. This offers even more options for comfort and fit. One prime example is a current Collusion set that has trousers made from a stretchy pleated jersey and the matching shirt made in a cotton poplin. Both are in the same orange floral so match perfectly, but the fact the trousers are in a jersey means they’re super comfortable. Then the shirt in cotton poplin should keep cool, as it’s made from natural fibres. The best of both worlds!

I’m thankful that over the last few years, some incredible co-ords have been designed for the plus-size world. One brand that has really homed in on this is Wray, the New York–based fine art–inspired clothing line that has been championing co-ord sets for a while now. It's become known for its fabulous colours, prints and size inclusivity. I especially love its checkerboard lounge sets. Whilst they’re U.S.-based, you can order to the UK from its site, and it's now offering free international shipping if you spend over a certain amount. If you wanted to try out Wray pieces before buying, I would suggest loaning a piece through Hurr, which currently has a great selection from sizes XS to 5XL.

Collusion on ASOS, which I mentioned previously, is another brand I return to time and again for co-ords. I’m really drawn in by its unisex, easy, oversized options, but its more fitted styles are fabulous, too. It currently has quite a few fun plus-size options for summer, taking its matching prints into accessories, so you can really go in on that matchy-matchy look. Like Collusion, Monki is great at repeating a print in lots of styles, allowing for countless matching possibilities. This gives you the chance to build your own co-ord that really works for your style and your body. Since it started doing most of its styles up to a size XXL (equivalent to a UK 24), I’ve been excited to shop there.

I love the juicy hue of this shorts-and-shirt co-ord. 

More recently, I’ve been lusting after the ombré satin shirt-dress-and-trouser combos from NorBlack NorWhite. The colours are so rich and luxurious, and I imagine myself living in those comfy 'fits day in, day out. The brand also creates the most joyful shorts-and-shirt co-ords out of colourful fabric that is hand tie-dyed in Delhi. Its pieces are made to order, so although this means you will have to wait around a month till your piece arrives, you also have the option of making a few size alterations if you need a different fit for your body.

A new brand to enter the plus-size shopping universe recently is The Hippie Shake. The ’70s-inspired UK brand has expanded its sizes up to a 24 in a good range of its retro styles. I love its embroidered-waistcoat-and-jeans combo and its corduroy floral jacket-and-skirt co-ord. Both would be great for the UK summer but would also look fabulous styled up with more layers in autumn and winter.

If you have a slightly higher budget, I would recommend Olivia Rubin’s knitwear co-ords. I have a few sets now, and they are the most-worn items in my wardrobe, hands down. I will wear them dressed down for a lazy Sunday morning on the sofa but also out for dinner with heels. Comfort and colourful joy all rolled into one.

Look for brands that do various pieces in the same print to build your own dream co-ord. 

A denim or twill co-ord can keep you going all year round, and we all love a double-denim moment, don’t we, Britney and Justin? Honestly, though, I love it! It's a classic look that can make you think of Western trends, '70s waistcoats and flares, or even 1950s workwear. If you're trying to find a plus-size version of these, I would suggest looking to Simply Be for colourful denim, Good American for your classic indigo denim and Lucy & Yak for organic cotton co-ords up to size 32.

This set is just pure summer! With its zesty colour palette, its covering of flowers and its soft towelling fabric, it is just calling out to be taken to the beach.

The comfiest co-ord around. Plissé pleats are a favourite of mine. I just love the drape and the movement they give to an outfit. This texture combined with a chock-a-block floral… Monki really is onto a winner. I’m wearing the XXL as a size UK 24, and I would say that because these items have so much stretch, I would still give them a try if you’re more of a size 26 or 28 too.

3. COLLUSION CO-ORD 

For hot, humid days, I really think this Collusion co-ord will be your friend. It's 100% cotton and breathable. Plus, the skirt is loose and easy to layer with anti-chafing "chub rub” shorts, which are nearly as essential as the air we breathe for a plus-size gal in the heat. The little shirred crop top can stretch over bigger boobs easily, and it’s so nice to feel a cooling breeze on your arms and neck. I remind myself, as a fat person, I deserve to have my arms out just as much as anyone else.

Weddings can be hard to dress for. Maybe it's being held in a different country or climate, maybe you won’t know many people there and are feeling nervous about being judged, or maybe you need to find a dress that can take you comfortably from a church ceremony to a late night (and early morning) on the dance floor. There’s often a lot of pressure placed on this outfit choice too. That may be the fanciest outing you have planned that year, so you’ll want to make the most of it. If it’s been the topic of conversation amongst friends for months already, that outfit will likely appear in many photos for years, if not decades, to come.

With all of this in mind, my key thought when finding a wedding guest outfit is always, Will I be comfortable in this all day? For example, if I know it’s going to be a hot day, I would look for a dress made from natural fibres, 100% organic cotton or silk. I don’t want to be sweating in polyester. I would also look for something I can wear with comfortable underwear. There have been too many times that I’ve worn a dress that required a strapless bra, only to find I want to viciously rip off the metal-filled torture devise only two hours into a 12-hour event—never again! I’m actually a big fan of certain shapewear, as I love the feeling of being secure, and I feel like it helps my posture and eases back pain. But I would suggest wearing the shapewear before the event as a little test run. Sometimes, you might not notice areas that niggle without wearing it for a few hours, so it’s best to know beforehand. I go for shapewear shorts to prevent thigh chafing and will sometimes wear a shapewear slip dress on top of these and my bra for a smoother invisible-underwear look under tighter dresses.

You also want to feel comfortable mentally. For me, this is usually making sure I feel comfortable with how low-cut my top is, as I feel happier in an outfit that covers my chest. I’m all for pushing your boundaries when it comes to fashion. However, I believe that a day-long event like a wedding might be a better place to push your boundaries with something like colour or print, rather than shape or silhouette. Basically, you don’t want to be pulling up or tugging down areas of your outfit all day because you don’t feel sufficiently covered.

When choosing your outfit, you need to remember to look on your invite to see if the couple have given a dress code. But I always go by the rule that it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve likely seen that I enjoy a colourful or printed outfit. I very much enjoy a bold look. I also really enjoy the conversations these looks start. I find an outfit with a little story to tell is a brilliant way to meet people, and it’s especially helpful if you don’t know many people at the event.

I would take this opportunity to look to smaller brands that might have more unusual made-to-order or pre-sale pieces, such as Mary Benson, Loud Bodies and Olivia Rubin, as you usually have plenty of time to plan. I would also check out rental sites like Hurr or By Rotation. Hurr has dresses from brands such as Ganni, Selkie and my own brand, Dolly Rocket. Then as a starting point on By Rotation, I would search for the profiles "lucy_earnshaw,” "Jbird” and "abimarvel,” as they have lots of plus-size options you can rent. Next, I would look at ASOS Edition and Never Fully Dressed, which always have lots of beautiful dress options. One recent exciting addition to the plus-size world has been Sister Jane (available on ASOS). Although its plus-size pieces only go up to a size 22, I am always here for progress! Marks and Spencer’s has some gorgeous dresses in at the moment which are available up to a size 24 and, in some cases, are even available in longer lengths if you’re taller. I would also have a look on Simply Be, and although I find that some of their event dresses aren’t my style, there are a few gorgeous pieces by the brands Anaya With Love, Hope & Ivy and Jo By Joanna Hope. Don’t forget that Anthropologie, Warehouse and Karen Millen also have plus-size options now. Finally, if you have a higher budget, it’s worth looking at Marina Rinaldi, Coyan, Dima Ayad and 11 Honoré.

We are delighted that Sara is a new guest columnist here at Who What Wear and over the next few months she will be writing about the items and trends that she finds hard to shop for, and will be sharing her expert tips and amazing product selections. As a designer, she really understands what is needed in terms of fit, and so she always has amazing insights and shopping tips. This month, she talks us through tailoring.

Tailoring or a good fitting pair of trousers really seems to set the "chic” apart from the rest, and if it isn’t obvious, I’d love to be part of the "chic” set. After trading my sewing alteration skills with my friend for her cat sitting skills, I recently discovered a world that felt quite distant from the one where I live. This world was the world of gorgeous trousers. The kind of trousers that are made from 100% wool, have soft internal linings and contrast trims inside the waistband. Those added touches that make a garment feel and hang better. I realised that I didn’t own a single pair of trousers like this, and it made me start thinking about what was on offer for me as a plus-size women in terms of trousers or tailoring.

These great trousers that I lusted after were from Sezane, and although as a UK 24 I can just about fit in their biggest size for knitwear, their other clothing is only made in sizes up to a UK 18, so I’ve got no chance. Their trousers are priced around £130, so understandably you would expect the good quality they provide. I just wish I had the option to invest and wear such a lovely garment. 

Ensuring a good fit with tailoring that isn’t made to order can be difficult at the best of times, however as the body grows, and we see more differentiation between body proportions, it gets even harder. One of the most difficult areas to get right is the back and front rise of trousers, these are the measurements that go from the seam at the very centre of the crotch, to either the top of the front waistband, or back waistband. This measurement, along with the way the seam curves, is what determines whether the trousers will fit high enough on your waist after going over your belly or your bum. Both are areas that greatly differ on every plus size body. One problem you might have, is that when trousers fit your hips, they’re too big at your waist, or vice versa. Perhaps you have thicker thighs that make the legs fit too tightly, or like myself the movement of your belly means you can see the pocket lining peeking out, ruining the clean look of a suit. 

With all of this to consider, we find that tailoring is often one of the last areas brands making plus sizes will cover. So where do I look for a good suit or great pair of trousers? I really rate the fit of ASOS curve’s trousers for my body, I find that I can nearly 100% rely on the fact I will need a size 24 and they will fit well. I appreciate that when ASOS create an oversized blazer for plus sizes it is actually oversized, giving that dramatic "Chuck on your boyfriend’s blazer” look that you often find in street style looks. And after working on the tailoring design team for two and half years when I designed for ASOS I also know how passionate they are for bringing us new and trend led styles. 

The other high street brands I look to for plus size tailoring are River Island, Simply Be, Mango and Trousers at M&S. However, M&S sadly currently only go up to a size 24, and I would really love their "long” trousers available in sizes over an 18 like they do in petite and standard lengths. 

As a plus size shopper I am very used to shopping online, meaning that when I receive clothes they are often really creased and crushed, needing a very good press before wearing. This can sometimes be worse when it comes to tailoring, shoulder pads can get distorted, creases in trousers can be hard to repress and collars might lose their correct breakpoint. That’s why I really appreciate that Simply Be suits come on a hanger and are generally folded much less than others I have ordered.

As for a slightly more premium price point, I am really impressed by the range of tailoring pieces available from Karen Millen and Marina Rinaldi. Marina Rinaldi go up to a UK 28, however I have found some of their trousers come up small so would usually try a size 26 or Marina Rinaldi size 31. It’s also interesting to note they have quite a wide range of price points so maybe look at their Persona Collection for a cheaper option. Their quality however is always on point, and they offer tailoring in their stores so if you often struggle with the length of sleeves or trousers you can get them fitted just right for you. 

One brand I immediately think of for plus size tailoring is Henning, the New York based luxury plus size brand founded by the fabulous model Lauren Chan. Their goal is to create beautifully executed wardrobe staples that make you feel "smart, sharp and powerful”. Their sell out suits, the "Bank”, "Laight” and "Renwick” have been specifically designed for plus size bodies with hidden elastic waists and reinforced inner thighs. 

After trying on the Incredible Blazer from last year’s size extended Ganni Collection with 11 Honoré, I am even more excited to see Ganni producing larger sizes. Keep an eye out for their newer collections as they introduce this larger size range. 

Just before I share some of my current shoppable favourites with you I want to shout out Universal Standard and The Hour too. Universal Standard have trousers and blazers available in sizes US 00 – 40 (UK 2 – 44), and the Hour have lots of tailored pieces specifically cut for plus size bodies with fine finishes in quality fabrics.

"It was mostly the colour that drew me to this suit, I love this dusky blue as it reminded me of the hue Shrimps used in much of their Resort 22 collection. I feel it would work well styled for lots of different occasions, whether as workwear or in a more colour-blocked look like I’ve put together."

"This pink suit is from the "Edition” range at ASOS, their most premium own brand range. You can tell there’s a substantial increase in quality in this suit as opposed to suits in ASOS’s core range. Excitingly, these trousers have the internal lining I lusted after in the Sezane trousers, plus the fabric is thicker than ASOS’s usual and has a lovely weight to it."

"I chose this red simply be blazer as I thought it would work well styled without a top underneath. I like the slightly higher break point on the collar meaning it would still cover my bra. Next up, plus-size fashion brands I'm really excited by.

Fashion, frankly, is becoming fatphobic again. It's a "blink and you might miss it" moment happening within luxury and contemporary retail brands. Plus-size and curve models are noticing a significant reduction in work. Brands are getting rid of their inclusive offerings after previously promising to expand their size ranges. Weight-loss medication is becoming commonplace among industry insiders and in Hollywood circles. As a plus-size shopper, I've never felt more discouraged. As a journalist, there's now a deep fire to prove that, yes, people above a size 12 deserve stylish clothes too.

Over the last few years, there's been a slew of internet-famous direct-to-consumer brands that made getting dressed up fun again. Whether it's influencer-led labels that capture a sweet Scandi aesthetic or celeb-loved brands that prioritize sustainable clothing, these five fashion labels promise that their clothes are cute, cool, and—most of all—accessible to most people, whether it be through plus-size-focused advertising campaigns or an expanded, inclusive size range.

To put these buzzy brands to the test, I called in a haul of massive proportions. Nearly 20 pieces, 12 outfits, and five hours of wear time later, here's exactly how these cult-loved brands' plus-size sections fared in comparison to their straight-size counterparts and how they actually feel on different bodies.

Djerf Avenue

Matilda Djerf's brand is a constant fixture on my For You page. Started in 2019, the brand has come to exemplify the minimalist Scandinavian style every 20-something is after. There are perfectly slouched blazers, aesthetically pleasing pastel robes, and crisp two-piece poplin sets that evoke late summer. While high-quality Scandi-style clothes are easy to come by, it's a challenge to find pieces in larger sizes. Djerf Avenue's transparent sizing model solved all of my problems when I found the brand a few years back. Nearly every item on the brand's site is available in up to a U.S. 3XL or 18/20. An oversize fit for most items also means sizing is more inclusive, fitting up to a 24 at best.

Ana wears the Breezy Shirt and Breezy Midi Skirt

The brand's Breezy Shirt fits like, well, a breeze. I was able to size down in this top for a slightly oversize fit without feeling like I'm being swallowed by the clothes. A slight crop also makes it perfect to tuck into jeans without extra material.

When I was chatting with Djerf through Instagram DMs earlier this summer, she told me I simply had to try this piece, so naturally, I obliged. The label's summer collection features a skirt that riffs off of the brand's signature Breezy line. Just like the Breezy Shirt, this cotton poplin midi is easy, lightweight, and breathable. Again, I'd recommend sizing down if you're looking for a garment that's true to size.

Ana wears the Citrine Mini Dress and Forever Blazer

In my mind, Djerf Avenue has always been associated with simple, classic fits and closet workhorses, so when I saw the brand drop this daring, semi-sheer minidress, I was sold. It's not often you find sexier pieces in inclusive sizing, so I knew I had to take this dress for a spin. The knit material on this mini gives it a bit of stretch, comfortably fitting up to a U.S. 22, if not larger.

Djerf Avenue's Forever Blazer has no competition in my book. This garment is the brand's best seller, and it's the reason every single Gen Z fashion icon will wear an oversize, slouchy jacket to the club. While it's on the pricier side, the cost per wear on this blazer ends up being in the single digits after constant use.

Réalisation

Réalisation is a indie darling with a slew of Instagram-famous dresses and adorable floral frocks worn by editors and influencers alike. Started in 2015 in Australia by Alexandra Spencer and Teale Talbot, Réalisation has become highly associated with a young generation of cool, hip, digitally savy It girls. As it's an Australian brand, sizing can be quite tricky, so I've found a secret loophole to shopping the brand as a plus-size consumer. I usually focus on the cut of the piece and the material—other curvy girls know this tip well! Of course, there's always room for improvement when it comes to sizing, but don't let the numeric labels on the clothing scare you. Réalisation definitely fares better than most.

Sizing: up to an XXL, with bias-cut designs fitting a U.S. 16/18/20.

Ana wears the Jade Dress

Although I've always been a fan of Réalisation's silky dresses, I've never tried the brands curve-friendly stretchy options until now. I sized down in the Jade, and I'm glad I did. I'm currently between sizes, so for a snug, formfitting look, taking your usual size rather than sizing up is the way to go. This might be one of my favorites on this list thanks to the tropical colorway.

Ana wears the Carrie Dress

When it comes to Réalisation's non-stretch dresses, the key is to focus on the construction of the garment. With the brand's bias-cut styles, the actual fit can be quite flexible. While the label says a U.S. 12, the reality is that most of the bias-cut pieces fit a U.S. 16 and beyond. I own the brand's famous Amber dress and two versions of The Gia, so I knew what to expect for this dress. It's utter perfection, and its asymmetrical hem and off-the-shoulder neckline are reminiscent of Carrie Bradshaw's style in Sex and the City—10/10!

Aligne

As an editor, I've worked with Aligne a lot before. The brand's minimalistic yet elevated aesthetic makes it a perfect go-to when I'm on the hunt for an elegant wardrobe addition. While international sizing tends to scare me, I've been pleasantly surprised with Aligne's chic extended-size offering. Unlike other brands, Aligne's extended sizes exist in nearly every single SKU, and sizes cap at a U.S. 18/UK 22. After the brand's butter-yellow Leo waistcoat and Daphne blazer went viral earlier this year, it has been catching everyone's attention.

Ana wears the Daphne Scoop Long Waisted Blazer and Markus Rigid Horseshoe Jean

I have zero notes on this blazer. All I can say is wow. I've taken my normal size for this one, and it fits nicely. It is a bit big, especially when the back waist panel isn't tightened all the way for a snatched look. If you have a larger-than-average bust, I'd suggest sizing up due to the scoop neckline on this beauty. I've never been more pleasantly surprised by inclusive tailoring than with this piece.

I love these jeans. Since receiving them in the mail over two weeks ago, I've worn them at least five times. I can't say enough good things about them. While the rich indigo wash on these makes them look 10 times more expensive than they actually are, I'm much more partial to the cool horseshoe shape these have. It's quite rare you'll find trendy plus-size denim, so these are a definite winner.

Dissh

If you're on TikTok, you've probably heard of Dissh. This Australian brand founded by Maree Henry and currently led by her daughter Lucy Henry-Hicks has been making the rounds on social as of late thanks to its elevated, quiet luxury–esque aesthetic composed of neutral color palettes, crisp linen pants, and timeless maxi dresses that have the internet's attention. I've always loved Dissh (mostly its knitted dresses that I'll easily throw on when I'm in a hurry), so when I was investigating the emergence of DTC fashion brands and their inclusive offerings, I knew I had to take the rest of the collection for a spin. My verdict? This one is definitely worth it.

Ana wears the Stevie Black and Stone Mini Dress

As a 5'9" gal who is closer to a size U.S. 16, I was nervous about trying this viral two-tone dress. Shockingly, though, it might be one of my favorite offerings on this list. The ruching means the standard U.S. 12 on the label doesn't take the stretchy, breathable material into account. If it were any shorter, this dress would be an HR violation if worn in the workplace, but that doesn't matter. I'm still obsessed.

Ana wears the Ivy Sleeveless Midi Dress

I own and love Dissh's pleated knitted maxi dress, so I wasn't surprised this variation also worked for me. This dress easily fits up to a U.S. 24 or 26 given the cozy, knitted material. The bateau neckline also makes this dress feel incredibly rich, garnering another point in my book.

This off-the-shoulder knit top is simply stunning. While it's not offered in Dissh's extended sizing, I found the largest size easily fit me, but it's not as slouchy as I would have liked. Either way, it looks perfect with a pair of simple white linen trousers, as styled above.

Ana wears the Theo Black Contrast Tank and the Stevie Black Bubble Mini Skirt

As a plus-size shopper, I was terrified of buying into the bubble-hem trend. There are very few options available on the market in my size, but I knew I had to try it out in the name of fashion. If you're a fan of low-rise bottoms and statement skirts, you'll love this look. The drawstring closure meant there was a considerable amount of give, and I was able to make this skirt work perfectly for me. Be warned: If you're any taller than 5'8", you might find this on the shorter side.

There's something so great about a simple tank. I wore this one paired with the above bubble skirt for a chic, elegant look. It's stretchy, comfortable, and extremely versatile with any jeans or shorts that are already in your closet.

Reformation

Reformation is one of my favorite retailers, hands down. I've written countless stories about the label—whether it's Euro summer finds or wedding guest dresses—so it was no surprise it was one of the first brands I turned to when it came to comparing standard and plus-size offerings at the internet's favorite brands. Its extended sizing is quite inclusive, with most garments going up to a 3XL or a U.S. 24, which is much better than some other brands on this list. If anything, Reformation's extended sizing runs a bit big, meaning most pieces can fit up to a U.S. 26 thanks to shirred, adjustable backs and knit formations. Although Reformation's plus-size offerings pale in comparison to the number of straight-size items available, it's one of the only mainstream DTC retailers that openly highlights its extended-size range on its website rather than hiding it.

Ana wears the Malika Linen Top

I can't say enough about Reformation's linen. It's semi-affordable and incredibly luxe feeling. The shirred back panel on this halter made this top so comfortable sans the itchy, rough feeling I tend to get with linen-based fabrics. I've sized down for a formfitting look, which is what I'd recommend for this top, especially when styled with the oversize Horseshoe Jeans from Aligne I previously gushed about.

One word: cuuuuuuutttteeeeee. Reformation's summer dresses have a cult following at this point, so this trendy polka-dot mini was high up on my list to try. The sweetheart neckline and drop waist make this feel ultra romantic, and it's perfect for any summer weddings or post-work happy hours you have on your calendar.

Ana wears the Anabella Linen Top

There's something about Reformation's delicate, lacy Anabella top that evokes summer for me. I might not be a Juilliard dropout, but I sure am interested in living on a farm with this pretty, European-inspired top. Similar to the above top, I wish I sized down, as Reformation's linen has a bit more give than other brands I've tried in extended sizing.

As winter rolled around, the fashion chat amongst my friends turned to how this winter would be the winter of the "Great Coat.” They were excited to wear all the fabulous coats they had seen and mentally added to their rental or shopping lists. Whereas I was left thinking, WHERE EXACTLY ARE THESE GOOD COATS?! I should probably tell you that I’m the only plus-size person in this friendship group, which explains a lot. All these dream coats are made by brands that don’t make clothes in my size. In fact, most of them stop short at about four sizes smaller than what I wear, so squeezing in, or hoping they were a bit oversized, was out of the question too.

I took my frustration at these brands for not making my size and channeled it into my search for a coat that would fit me. So what makes a "good coat”? For me, it’s a piece of clothing that’s good-quality and something that will last me a few winters. But most importantly, it’s a piece that excites me and makes me feel happy. After all, when you’re wearing a coat, it is practically your whole outfit. It’s an outfit you will repeat over and over, so it must be a joy giver. It’s also important to be able to layer up underneath with a jumper if needed, so this can mean sizing up is necessary, making it harder to find a coat as a plus-size woman, as even plus-size ranges tend to stop at a size 24. You also need to think about the practical requirements: How warm do you need it? Does it need to be waterproof? Do you need a hood? And how much can you fit in those pockets?

If your budget allows, the first place I would tell you to look would be Marina Rinaldi, the plus-size sister brand of Max Mara, where you can find an equally gorgeous classic camel coat that’s most likely made in the same fabric and factory as the Max Mara smaller-sized counterpart. What makes this shopping experience even better is that you can try on the coats in person in the brand’s incredible town house store near Old Bond Street—an experience that’s few and far between if you’re over a size 18. I do think a winter coat is worth investing in, so if you love it, get it. I think I will forever regret not buying the bright-yellow wool-blend coat from the Marina Rinaldi A/W 19 collection. If you’re looking for something a little cheaper, you could set up an eBay saved search alert for Marina Rinaldi coats in your size and find yourself a second-hand one. The quality is always amazing, so you can still find yourself a treat.

For something more interesting, I look to smaller brands like Anna Scholz, Tamara Malas, Wray or Neon Rose. Then, if you’re looking for a high-street option, I would start by browsing through ASOS or Simply Be, but it can be a task to get through the rather endless black and basic options. So this is where I come in to help. I have searched through and found my favourite picks of the best plus-size coats out there this winter. From big budgets to small, for neutral lovers or colour lovers like me, there should hopefully be one for everyone.

1. Labelrail x Francesca Perks Faux-Leather Jacket

This shearling-style jacket has a Prada A/W 14 vibe about it (please look this collection up—it’s dreamy), which I will love forever, and it feels like an adventurous style and colour palette to find in plus sizes, which I am very much here for. The fur is super soft, and it’s one you’ll definitely feel snug and warm in.

2. Simply Be Pink Slim Crombie Coat

I love the simplicity of this shape, and the hot-pink colour really sets it apart from most of the more formal plus-size coats available at the moment. This classic shape will mean it remains a coat I want to wear year after year.

3. Pieces Pink Quilted Coat

After seeing lots of gorgeous brightly coloured or pastel padded coats on the runway and Instagram, this was the key piece I was hunting for this winter. The second I saw this pink Pieces Curve coat, I knew it was the one! It’s such a great shade of pink, and I love the poppers at the side so you can open up optional slits. It’s a collarless style so really easy to layer with scarves, and next, I want to try layering it up with a big collar, a little bit Shrimps-esque.

Next up, the spring/summer 2022 fashion trends we love.

There's a frustration here in the UK that there aren't enough plus-size brands available, especially when it comes to more specialised categories like swimwear. Compared with the US, it seems that we Brits haven't always had as good a range available, but things are beginning to change. Not only can you get plus-size brands shipped over from the States, but there are also (finally) more cool brands available in the UK. ASOS Curve has led the charge for some time now, and its bikinis and one-pieces are genuinely great. But thanks to the online retailer stocking plenty of other plus-size brands, there are even more options for you to consider.

Today, I've compiled a list of the best plus-size swimsuit brands that I can find. The criteria is that they have to be truly more inclusive of sizing options (not just catering to people with fuller busts) and have to look good. I've delved into ASOS's offering to dig up my favourite brands, but I also looked at other stand-alone plus-size labels that do exceptional swimwear, such as Torrid, which you can ship from the U.S. Just remember that import taxes may apply, so do your due diligence first.

I also want to point out that each brand has its own USP and definitely caters to different personal styles, which is great for anyone in desperate need of variety. You'll find classic swimsuits available as well as fun animal-print two-pieces that are a little more adventurous. Keep scrolling for my guide on the best plus-size swimsuit brands around. 

1. River Island Plus

Starting off with one of my favourites, I love River Island's extra approach to swimwear. I'd definitely opt for the one-pieces, as they're just so cool. The belted one-shoulder leopard-print suit is a total winner.

While this is based in the U.S., thankfully, Torrid ships to the UK. There are many kinds of styles that this brand stocks a variety of—from racerback swim tanks to activewear pieces.

3. Collusion Plus

If you're looking for more fashion-forward styles, then Collusion is what you're looking for. And the swimwear is no different. Right now, there's a chic square-neck black one-piece, a tiger-print bikini and a crinkle two-piece in brown to choose from. The question is, Which one will you go for?

4. H&M+

H&M has been doing its plus-size arm for some time, and it just keeps getting better. The swimsuit offering is still a bit smaller than other brands, but the options available are all great.

5. Peek & Beau

In the industry, we'd call Peek & Beau swimwear "classics with a twist" The swimsuits are more traditional in terms of prints—stripes, florals and polka dots—but the silhouettes include cut-outs and ruffles.

Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with ASOS Curve. It's a reliable brand that not only caters to trends but also still manages to create long-lasting designs.

7. Wolf & Whistle Curve

A brand that also works for those with a fuller bust? Look no further than Wolf & Whistle for its Curve swimsuits.

8. Adidas x Ivy Park Plus

When I was working as a designer at ASOS and the contemporary dress market was booming, the design team was filled with 20-something women with weddings to go to all the time. Everyone was always talking about the dress they were going to wear, and wearing a Rixo or a Rotate was the thing you really wanted. It was at that point that I realised people were saving up or splashing out on these more premium brands and doing it for "the dress,” but I couldn't even if I wanted to because I couldn’t get one in my size. 

That kicked off an obsession for me. So many of these brands are quite "cultish,” with stunning, iconic dress styles, and I wanted to be able to be part of that gang. Although there is still a way to go, there have been some improvements in terms of size inclusivity. Everyone has their own idea of what size-inclusive means, so I will define what I mean by this term. Perhaps if you don’t know the struggles of dressing a bigger body, you might think going up to a size 22 is inclusive. However, unless a brand does bespoke orders for all sizes, I wouldn't definitively call it fully inclusive. One of the best examples of a size-inclusive brand is Universal Standard, which caters to sizes 2 through 44 in all of its products.

When it comes to plus-size dresses, on the high street, I’m impressed by Never Fully Dressed’s curve options, but I’m hoping it continues to expand its size range, as it mostly only goes up to a 24. It’s exciting that Anthropologie’s plus-size collection is now available in the UK. I think it can be good for a put-together, special dress or an easy summer chuck-on style. Another high-street brand I love is Neon Rose. I think it does cute styles and pushes the trend look a little bit farther than other plus ranges. A lot of the time, where you might have a trend happening, the plus range will get a watered-down version or you might get the trend style five months later than everyone else. I really hope brands stop doing this.

Luxury-wise, I’ve been looking toward 11 Honoré and Marina Rinaldi. There is still a massive void of plus-size luxury fashion, even more than on the high street. Marina Rinaldi has a designer fashion background, as it is the plus-size sister brand of Max Mara and Sportmax. The quality of fabrics it works with is beautiful and the make of the clothing is always incredible. I designed for the brand when I first graduated, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

It’s also so exciting that Olivia Rubin is opening up her sizes to a 24. Independent brands are probably the fastest-growing market for plus-size and size-inclusive clothing. This is because they often produce more locally and usually produce to a made-to-order or pre-order system, meaning they have the flexibility to work with a seamstress and make one-off styles. A lot of brands now make items bespoke no matter what size you are. Olivia Rose, Benjamin Fox, Molby, Mary Benson and Megan Crosby all do that. Loud Bodies is also one to highlight, as its size range is one I would actually call size-inclusive. It offers sizes XXS through 10XL and will also do custom sizing for petite, tall or atypical bodies at no extra cost.

If you want a more formal, statement piece, that's often harder to find in plus-size. There are a couple of brands in America that if people can afford to have them shipped to the UK are beautiful options. Selkie is doing well with its really princessy organza dresses, available up to a size 5XL in lots of gorgeous colours. Rachel Antonoff does amazing conversational prints, and the brand Wray does really cool colourful checkerboard-printed dresses. I would also say to keep an eye out for Tamara Malas, as her designs are beautiful and bold too. The rental platform Hurr has some dresses from Wray, Selkie and Loud Bodies that you can borrow from the UK. It has recently started expanding its size offering and set a goal to add over 750 unique pieces in sizes UK 16 and above, growing its plus size offering by 120% by 1 August, 2021.

Dresses give you a complete outfit and are quite simply the maximalist’s dream because you can have one bold print head to toe and not have to dilute the look down by adding a plain piece to make it easier on the eye. I personally love oversize, flowy dresses—something with big sleeves that has lots of fabric and that you feel luxurious in. When I wear a dress, I love it to have a lot of special design details like ruffles, statement sleeves and collars.

1. Knitted Rainbow Dress

This is a knitted dress I bought from Twinset in Italy about five years ago. It was quite a splurge at the time, but I think it is my favorite piece of clothing I have ever bought. Because it is knitted, it has fit me whilst I have been four different dress sizes.

2. Vintage Green Floral Midi

This is a vintage find from Portobello Market. Secondhand and vintage can be even more difficult to find in my size. There is quite a TikTok trend to thrift things and change them to fit your body, and often people buy things that are four or five sizes bigger than them. That means you are buying out the vintage clothes that should be there for the people in their size. Ahead of the Curve is a platform that does plus-size vintage fairs, and the next one is on the 8 May.

3. Printed Midi With Puff Sleeves

This colourful dress is one I designed and made myself. If all goes to plan, it should be my first dress that I will be launching this summer at my brand, Dolly Rocket. It will be available in sizes 6 through 32, and I will be able to make bespoke orders for anyone outside of that size range. I will be doing pre-orders to cut down on excess wastage too. I am planning on launching it in a mini and a midi length, and people will have the option of three different prints, each designed by me and each unique to my brand. There will be this rainbow wave print, a pastel version of the rainbow wave and a multicoloured paisley print.

4. Two-Print Sleeved Minidress

This is a Never Fully Dressed Curve Dress, which I bought in December. I love how it mixes two prints together, and it has a great '60s/'70s vibe.

The premise of this article is simple. On a weekly basis, I stumble across lesser-known brands that are doing seriously cool stuff within the industry. My discovery of said brands generally results in me waxing lyrical to my long-suffering colleagues on Slack (where else?), so I thought it was about time that I shared some of these gems with you, our lovely readers. 

This week is a somewhat eclectic mix: two affordable sustainable fashion brands and one incredible size-diverse collab. Damson Madder and Seventy + Mochi make up the former and are brands that offer the rare combination of eco-credentials, design savvy and affordability. I have pieces from both brands and can confirm they look just as good in real life as they do online. I also had to include Erdem's collaboration with Universal Standard, a stunning collection that runs from size 00 to size 40 and comprises plenty of winning spring-ready staples, such as denim shackets and floral minidresses. More of this please, fashion designers.

1. Damson Madder

I discovered sustainable fashion brand Damson Madder via ASOS last year and was impressed by its design kudos and affordability (something that is sadly lacking in the sustainable clothing market). The brand has just dropped its S/S 21 collection, and I think it's the best to date. Featuring smart fabrics such as Tencel, organic cotton and recycled towelling, Damson Madder offers transparency and eco-credentials without scrimping on style. I have my eye on the checked green shorts co-ord and the ruffle-neckline gingham dress. Feel-good summer vibes epitomised.

2. Seventy + Mochi

I've featured conscious denim brand Seventy + Mochi in a few shopping galleries since its inception in 2020, but I had to give the label a proper call-out this week, as I spot another lust-worthy item that is begging to be "added to basket" every time I check the site.

This week, it was the brand's patchwork denim dungarees made from deadstock organic cotton that set my heart racing. I have the originals (see above) and can confirm they're super flattering and comfy. I also can't stop thinking about the Pablo denim jacket with a cute ruffled collar and balloon sleeves. FYI: These collections are made in limited quantities to avoid waste, so if you see something you love, don't delay.

3. Erdem x Universal Standard

The concept of a size-inclusive fashion line shouldn't be particularly noteworthy, but unfortunately, with the industry's current track record, it is certainly something to celebrate. This season, British fashion brand Erdem has joined forces with size-diverse US label Universal Standard for an exclusive collaboration, the designs of which are available from size 00 up to size 40. 

"There's a beautiful universality in denim, and with careful design, you can achieve a wonderful permanence," says designer Erdem Moralıoğlu MBE. "Fashion for everyone means designing consciously beyond the boundaries of shape or trend."

With jumpsuits coming in at £182 and blouses at £131, these pieces might be higher than your average high-street buy, but getting a slice of the Erdem action for under £200 is not something to be sniffed at. Scroll down to see and shop our highlights.

When it comes to inclusivity, to say the fashion industry has a long way to go would be an understatement. Though we’re beginning to see brands changing their approach and giving more consideration to their size offering (and it’s about time), for many women, finding stylish clothing in their size is still a significant struggle.

Welcome to the latest highly exciting instalment of Who What Wear UK's Best Wardrobes in Britain. It's where we do exactly what it says on the tin: delve into the most fantastical, awe-inspiring, and downright influential wardrobes. We're honing in on the women who cause the street style photographers to press their shutters as much as the characters you don't yet know—the ones who fly under the radar with secretly incredible clothing collections.

Earlier this year on Instagram, I saw someone share a list of people that they would trust to effectively manage the nationwide vaccination plan—one person on that list was Abisola Omole. No, she doesn't work in politics or project management or the health sector but is known by her industry peers as someone who just gets things done. As a teenager, her fashion blog gained her a place at London Fashion Week, but once inside she experienced how unwelcoming the old guard of the industry can be—and so she decided to make her own space where her peers who were working in digital could write about the runway shows and feel like they belonged.

This turned into a successful business called The Apartment, which was a hub for those working in digital at fashion week in London, Paris and New York. This project led to her setting up her own digital and creative agency which specialises in event production, staging and digital strategy, but it is just one of the many businesses Abisola now runs. She is also the Creative Director of Studio Arva, an interior design company with two beautiful London studios, and she is currently working on the launch of a plus-size fashion line and a collection of interiors products. While Abisola doesn't see fashion blogging as part of her current career, she continues to document her outfits on Instagram because of her commitment to advancing the representation of plus-size women in fashion.

Have you always been interested in fashion?

I don't think there was a huge interest more than the average teenage girl. But I was really into computers and the online world, and so I started to create my own websites and different digital presences. But when I decided to start a proper website, I chose to focus it on my outfits. I was 15 and doing my GCSEs. I can't say I had amazing style, but the idea was that I was documenting what I was wearing and in doing that I became more conscious of my style and more adventurous. That was an interesting time for me, experimenting with clothes. It was through that process of documenting my outfits that I developed a greater appreciation of fashion. Also, I've always technically been plus size (right now, I'm a 20/22, and when I started the blog, I was about a size 14). It was always a struggle for me to find clothes, so that was part of the documenting process too. I'd find an outfit I really liked, and try to recreate it in my size. It was rarely easy, but that was the journey and the fun of it.

Finding clothes on the high street at that time was essentially impossible, but I was into vintage (mostly menswear due to sizing availability) and started buying a lot from eBay, living in blazers and plaid tops and a lot of leggings. It was really hard to find jeans that fit, and it was only in the last couple of years that I've been able to find pairs that are truly in my size. I had to adapt to what was available to me, but instead of being pushed away from fashion, a sense of determination kicked in, to keep looking. I fell more in love with fashion because I had to work harder for it. Late last year, I was working on a feature about jeans, and I realised that it wasn't until quite recently that I could go to Levi's and get jeans in my size. So to now say over 15 brands have plus-size denim is wild to me. It's encouraging to see brands improve and try to work to be more inclusive, but there's still much work to be done.

What items are the most difficult to find in plus sizes and which areas have the most work left in terms of size inclusivity?

I really struggle with finding stylish plus-size evening-wear. You're either going to get an Oscar de la Renta gown, which is great but not exactly affordable or you have the option of an ill-fitting, less considered look from a fast fashion brand that doesn't quite work. There's rarely anything in between. For the past few years, I've been invited to the BAFTA after-party that takes place at Annabel's and last year, all I wanted to wear was a simple, floor-length, silk flowy dress. I found them everywhere up to a size 16 but couldn't find any in my size. In the end, I just got a jumpsuit, which was chic but it was really sad that I couldn't find a simple silk dress anywhere. There are more options when it comes to casual-wear and workwear, but evening-wear is at the forefront of my mind as being very difficult to shop.

As for an area that requires work, I'd definitely say the correlation between buying plus size, whilst staying sustainable. People, when they think of sustainability often just think of production or things being fast-fashion or not, but to me, there are so many additional elements to consider that are equally important, from the price point to the diversity in the team behind the collections. I just wish people would have the same energy they reserve for criticising plus-size women for wearing fast fashion, as they did for creating more all-around sustainable options for us to wear.

On Abisola: Faithfull the Brand dress. 

Which brands do you think are the best for plus-size options?

No one is perfect, but there are some places that I find much better than others. Violeta by Mango is one of the best on the market when you look at affordability and style. It can be really hard to find cool style-led pieces, but Mango is really trying to deliver that. I'm also very impressed by Karen Millen, which has some really strong plus-size pieces. I'm a "small" plus size and so I can still get something from the likes of Massimo Dutti, & Other Stories and cool-girl brands like Ganni. I'm only able to wear these brands when the pieces are stretchy and/or oversized, not because they're actually my size. I don't know if I'm missing something, but if you can create oversized and slouchy pieces, why can't you simply create plus-size clothing? I'll never understand.

Certain high-street brands offer the biggest size ranges, but then people can be criticised for wearing fast fashion—what do you think of that?

It's a little bizarre to critique people for embracing the limited options available to them, but what I will say is that it's typically individuals who are not plus size that seem to have so much to say about the fast fashion plus-size issue. A few of my friends are influencers in the U.S. and they regularly work with fast-fashion brands and receive a lot of online criticism because of this—and sure, we're all entitled to our own opinions, but then it's also like, "Where else can they shop, though?" When you get to a certain size, there aren't options. This level of ignorance annoys me so much and especially as it would be naive of us to think that just because some brands are expensive, they're any better. This negativity and lack of understanding need to disappear. It's a similar argument to when people complain about parents who feed their kids frozen food—not everyone has the money to give their kids kale crisps and shop regularly at Whole Foods. Obviously, there's no issue with doing so, it's just not a realistic option for so many and it's quite sad when all that pressure is put onto people, and there's not much else they can do.

You said you used to wear a lot of vintage. How do you find vintage shopping for plus size?

One of my friends, Chloe, has a vintage store called Slow Vintage Shop and I did a collaboration with her and we spent months sourcing vintage that would specifically cater to plus-size individuals. The collection had a fair amount of menswear and we had to really dig to find chic pieces we were happy with. Once we launched we had to encourage straight-sized shoppers to not buy from the collection, as history has shown that the small percentage of pieces that are available in bigger sizes is substantially reduced because smaller shoppers seek oversized styles. That was a struggle because you don't want to police these things, but then the whole point of why we did this was because the vintage plus-size world is so small and it's really hard to find great pieces. 

I remember times when I'd be in Paris for fashion week and my friends and I would go vintage shopping. They would find the most incredible pieces—vintage Valentino, Dries Van Noten, etc. and end up buying the most amazing items, and I'd often leave with nothing, as nothing ever fit. Though one time, I did buy a pair of leather gloves. There's still a long way to go. If brands are only just starting to create inclusive clothing now, and therefore didn't do it in the past, you're just not going to find vintage plus-size clothing—the items never existed.

You're working on your own fashion line—what is your idea for that?

It is a self-funded plus-size premium fashion line. It's going to be beautifully curated pieces and, similar to what I said about what is missing in the market, there will be a lot of evening-wear. I want it to be that with every drop you want to buy all of it. It will be released in capsule collections of eight to 12 truly timeless pieces. They'll come out around twice a year and will be all available on pre-order, which is a sustainable and smart business model, especially when you know the figures around waste in the fashion industry. There will be chic coats, dresses, skirts, jumpers and co-ords—basically the pieces that I've never been able to find in my size. The line will feel like Gabriela Hearst meets The Row, but it'll be affordable and go up to a size UK 28. 

How would you describe your own style?

I'd describe my style as grounded in comfort and predominately featuring items that are soft. I love cashmere, wools and anything that is really warm and cosy. Everyone says "Abi, your style is so minimal and Scandi." And I'm like, "Is it?" I just like tonal looks, creams, whites and beiges and to be at peace with my colour palette. As strange as it may sound, I am awake for most of the day and am always on the go, so an outfit needs to help guide me through the day, ensuring I'm the most optimal I can be, so being either comfortable or tonal and peaceful to look at.

What are classic pieces you know you'll always have in your wardrobe?

When I was 18 I got my first cashmere jumper and was like, "Yup, this is for me." And ever since then I think cashmere jumpers are the one. There is something so premium and soft and so luxurious about having cashmere that I don't think I'll ever get over. My goal is to have cashmere everything: rompers, co-ords, everything! It's hard to find cashmere stuff in my size, so when I do I'm very into it. I don't usually wear many trousers or jeans because I find them to be very uncomfortable—brands don't make them for our bodies. Jeans just don't come naturally to me as they do to many people. I gravitate the most towards dresses and jumpers.

A typical outfit for me is a silky dress with a cashmere jumper and a big blankety coat—it's cosy, sophisticated and easy. I always try to create outfits that look premium, high-end and formal but styled with trainers because comfort is so important to me, especially when running events. It's important that I put together a wardrobe for a busy and practical person, while also remembering that I'm the face of my companies.

Do you think you'll always share pictures of yourself on Instagram? Is that important to you?

It's not necessarily important from a career perspective but it is from a representation point of view. I post photos because I want to continue to advance the representation of plus-size women in the industry. I'm aware, without being overly pretentious, that I have good taste. Perceptions of the plus-size industry are often that we "lack style" or don't have "sophisticated taste levels," and so that's the excuse used for not taking us seriously. So I guess my content is trying to say "I dare you to continue with that mindset." The amount of messages I get of people that say, for example, "I had no idea where to get jeans from. Thank you" or "It's so great to know I'm not alone in my experiences" is encouraging. With my fashion writing and pictures, I'm starting to feel like I have a responsibility. It's fun and I enjoy it, but I feel like I have a duty to use whatever experience and influence I have in the best way possible and I don't want people to look at plus-size content or edits as "lesser than." I want people to look at my work and not even realise that it's for the plus-size community, I want it to seamlessly become a part of their everyday consumption.

You mentioned your line will be affordable, why is that so important to you?

My Instagram feed is filled with Gucci, Dior, Chanel, Bottega Veneta, which is great, but it's just not real life (well, not for me and not for many other people!). It's all well and good saving for an investment piece, but there's something to be said for dressing really well and consistently, but on a budget. I don't like the stigma that surrounds people who buy more affordable versions of things—we can't all afford a wardrobe full of Jacquemus. If people can achieve great style, and it is inclusive both in size and in price, then that is just amazing. By the way, don't expect me to pat brands on the back when they decide to expand their size and price offering, it's great but everyone should be doing it anyway!

When did you start going to fashion week and when did you set up the Apartment?

It was my second or third time going to fashion week as a blogger and I was freelancing for a couple of sites like MSN. I remember being in the official press lounge, and I had my accreditation and was feeling really proud of myself, especially as I was only 17 at the time. A lady asked me what title I was from and I said I had a blog, and she just looked at me as if to say, "Why are you here?" and abruptly walked away. I was so excited to be there and it was such an awful experience, I just remember thinking, if you were working online or for yourself, you clearly weren't welcome. So I thought we needed a place where we did belong and could work. It wasn't until the third time I went to Fashion Week that I thought that I'd get an apartment where we (the online community attending the shows) could work from, establish industry relationships and finally feel like a part of the fashion industry.

I had been blogging for about four years and so had established good relationships with brands, and was able to leverage that influence and those connections to get brands to sponsor the event. It wasn't anything huge, for the longest time my dad would joke about the fact that I charged a huge phone network just £700 to be our title sponsor for space, but I was just so excited. At the time, I was also working part-time at Paperchase and using that money to fund it all, so I was just happy that I wasn't broke and could cover my costs. The first one went well, and then we got approached by Microsoft to sponsor the second. And I was like, "The second one?!" Fast forward and the company grew. We held apartments in New York, London and Paris. It started from a place of necessity and needing somewhere to foster our community and not be around hostile print magazine editors, but it truly became something incredible and I've made life-long friends and colleagues and have learnt so much.

It's amazing that you created a kind, welcoming and inclusive space...

From making £6.50 an hour at Paperchase, to then suddenly having enough money to hire out huge spaces in Covent Garden and transform them into fun, fashion experiences, all at the age of 19—it was all wild to me. It was always in an apartment or private members club setting because I didn't want it to feel like a press day, but to feel like you were at your cool friend's house or favourite hangout spot. The overall aim, and all I really wanted, was to make an inclusive space, but there were so many new variables introduced over the years, from additional responsibility because brands were paying thousands of pounds to ensure the right people were seeing their collections to guests wanting to bring their friends and even sometimes family members, all the while trying to build a career, and so keeping everyone happy was an impossible task.

You want to be able to invite everyone, but with areas like our wardrobe, where guests could rent pieces to wear during fashion week, it was tricky. One season we had watches worth up to £8000 available to wear for the week. The moment we became responsible for our sponsors' items, I had to be careful with our guest list, as now there was an element of trust needed and regardless of whose fault it was, if something went missing, I was liable. This meant a level of exclusivity was introduced and naturally not everyone liked this, but I always tried to be fair and strike a balance between keeping our clients and the community happy.

Then you've turned your business more into studio hire and event production. Tell me about that.

We started doing more event production and naturally started doing more set design. My love of interior design just came from the sheer amount of events we had to style and create from scratch in these blank-canvas locations. I got really, really into furniture and started sourcing more and more pieces, and learning about different designers, so as I developed each space it became more and more refined and I felt like I was really finding my design voice. It got to a point where we didn't want to rent furniture for our events anymore and started to purchase them instead. Eventually, we got a space in Leyton to be our storage and office, but I decided to lay it out in situ and then people started asking me about renting it out. One of H&M's brands did a shoot and private event there, and so we transitioned it in 2019 into a full-blown studio that anyone, personal or commercial, could hire. It wasn't planned, but I've always wanted to have a hotel one day, so this seemed like a logical and natural step in the right direction. I decided to brand it Studio Arva and over time have been doing private interiors projects for people's houses and offices and have opened a second studio located in Islington.

I've always known that I belittled my achievements, but one of the things I learnt from the Black Lives Matter movement is that it's okay to say, "This is amazing and I am successful and doing well." So I decided around July 2020 to officially add interior designer to my list of professions. I was conscious that I didn't want to come across as proud, but I had to state facts at this point, or else no one was going to know all that I did. I've previously completed huge projects and you'd never even know about them. It wasn't on purpose, my team and I were just busy and never saw the value in shouting about our work, but I now realise it was potentially holding us back from the even bigger projects because people didn't know what we were capable of. Just seeing the opportunities that have come my way over the past few months, has really ensured that I now understand the value and importance of sharing what I do with the world.

I'm trying to own more of what I do and the skills I have, with my new found confidence. I remember we'd have meetings a few years ago and I'd say, "Hi, I'm Abi. I work at The Apartment." And we'd all sit around and the clients would be like, "So who is in charge?" And I'd respond saying, "Oh, hey, that's me!" I'd always introduce myself as working at The Apartment, rather than running it. Owning my position isn't something that came naturally to me, especially as I didn't want to come across as arrogant but in order to truly grow, that's exactly what needed to happen.

Do you see interiors as an area you want to move more into? 

Right now, my team and I are working on quite a few interior-related projects, including the development of a line of interiors products, so yes, I definitely see myself being more present in the interior world for now. One thing I'm often criticised for online is for looking like I'm working on too many things at once. I don't disagree but I am very conscious of my time here on earth and I just want to do ensure that I'm following God's plan, whilst having fun and trying new things. If Studio Arva is a period in my life and then I move on, that's fine! I don't feel like I should continue to do things just because it's expected of me. I want to be happy with the work I'm doing, and so I see my companies as projects rather than companies, so I can remain flexible, accept they might have an end date and just go where I feel led.

Stephanie Yeboah has always loved fashion. When she was young, she'd watch runway shows on TV, loving the creativity, the drama, and the couture. She'd even tear out images from magazines her older cousin had bought to create her own fashion paradise on her bedroom wall. But it took a long time for Yeboah to find clothing that actually gave her the opportunity to express herself in the way she wanted.

Yeboah is plus-size, and until relatively recently, many fashion brands assumed that women who are larger than a size 16 only wanted, in her words, "butterfly prints, smock dresses, and empire lines." Yeboah says she felt bound by those fashions, relegated to wearing items that really weren't her style. Then, her mum introduced her to ASOS Curve. The day she found out about the brand, Yeboah says, was one of the happiest days of her life. 

"The first fashion post I'd ever done for my blog, I was wearing an ASOS dress. I took a full-length mirror photo and uploaded it. I went to work and came home and saw the amount of comments on it and burst into tears. It was a very affirming moment for me."

Today, Yeboah boasts 173K followers on Instagram—a sure sign that fashion people take note of her style—and wears outfits from chic checked suits to cool slip dresses worn over tees with stomper boots. While she certainly fits the profile of a successful fashion blogger, Yeboah still faces barriers when it comes to body positivity in the fashion industry, especially in terms of the perception of fat and Black bodies. Just last month, model Nyome Nicholas-Williams had a photo deleted by Instagram and was warned her account could be shut down after she posted an almost-topless photo, a move that doesn't appear to be replicated when it comes to slimmer, white women.

The release of Yeboah's debut book Fattily Ever After: A Fat, Black Girl's Guide to Living Life Unapologetically couldn't have been more perfectly timed, as it speaks to the issues the fashion industry has when it comes to "socially unacceptable" bodies. The book is about her own personal experiences of being fat and Black and the history behind the body-positivity movement. There are vital lessons to be learnt, but there are also useful, tangible tips for those navigating an often hostile industry. Here, we speak to Yeboah on her love of fashion, what the industry can do better, and the future of plus-size fashion. 

Congrats on the book! Why was it so important to write it? 

It was the frustration of myself and women that look like me being constantly left out of the conversation when it comes to the body-positivity movement—especially as Black, plus-size women started it. The more body positivity has become popular, the more it has been pushed towards the European, white look. And it has silenced the women who needed it the most. I was tired of seeing the body-positivity movement from the European point of view, and there wasn't enough literature about how we navigate this area as fat, Black women.

In your book, you talk about how great it was when you discovered ASOS Curve and how that changed everything…

I was introduced to ASOS by my mum, but back then, it was As Seen on Screen. I’ve always been a creative, but I struggled to learn how to display my creativity because the clothes that were available to me were ageing. Brands assumed that plus-size women wanted to be hidden. They were all heavy and dark materials. The day I found out about ASOS Curve was one of the happiest days in my life. I think I ordered about £300 worth of stuff and redid my whole wardrobe.

One of the big things that I love about ASOS is that, instead of creating a whole new line, they created plus-size versions of what they already had. A lot of brands need to take that into consideration. We don’t want something different—we want to wear what smaller people are wearing.

Are there any other brands right now doing great collections that include women of all sizes?

Calvin Klein does plus-size. I love their pieces, as they fit really well and true to size. I love their underwear, too, as it's heritage and iconic. And they’ve started creating it for plus-size. There are a couple of small boutique brands called Glamorous and Neon Rose. Their clothing is great. Levi’s is another great one. The denim is great, of course. I've been living in their dungarees. I think there are brands that do good plus-size clothing, but then you also have to think about sustainability. Then again, we have to take what we can get when it comes to clothing.

How can you balance sustainability with being plus-size? Is it possible?

With sustainable and plus-size together, it will always be a lot more expensive. Something that’s sustainable might be £120, so then it’ll be £180 if it’s plus-size. So we’re at a huge disadvantage when it comes to spending. Also, we have just four or five brands that are plus-size, so it's also a question of accessibility. The plus-size brands that are also sustainable, they’re very expensive and price people out of buying them. Vintage shopping and eBay is an option, but there appears to be hardly any clothing available in plus-size. What we’ve noticed is that there is a trend of smaller people buying the plus-size clothing or wearing it oversize, so that doesn’t leave us with many options.

What are your favourite trends right now? 

Stuff I wish could be made in size fat is probably everything on Zara’s website, but they’ve always said they wouldn’t do plus-size clothing. A few months ago, Zara came out with a top featuring organza sleeves. I was like, why can’t they make them for us? To be honest, anything that has a bit of mesh on it is a bit of me. I'd also love a good faux-leather blazer in a chocolate brown and beige cigarette pants.

Has your style changed over the pandemic?

For the past three or four months, I’ve been living in short dungarees and Vans. I can’t be bothered to dress up. It feels weird to dress up now. Everything is loose, and I just can’t be bothered.

In your book, you talk about how your style has evolved over time. What are your rules for helping women finding their own personal style?

The work needs to start from within. You need to be at a place where you accept your body because, when you start from a place of self-hate and not feeling the most confident, you’ll wear things that hide your body. You need to make an effort every day, and you should learn everything to love about your body and what you want to show off about your body. For a long time, I realised that I was dressing a certain way to fit society’s ideal version of what a fat person should look like. Now, my style isn't girly girl. It's more about a good pantsuit, and even if it looks big on me, it doesn’t matter. I love crop tops. It makes people angry, and I get stared at when I’m wearing one. But I’m upsetting the status quo, and, in turn, it's allowed me to love myself. Really, it’s about not giving a damn about what people think about what I’m wearing. So when you're figuring it out, note the areas of your body that you want to learn how to love and also show off. Dress for yourself, and don't dress for anyone else because it’s nobody’s business.

Let's be straight here: Fashion has never been good with plus-size clothing. Historically, the curve offering has been dismally small, and even when it was offered, often, the designs are hardly what you'd call fashionable. While we undoubtedly have a long way to go still, over the last few years, the choice of brands has definitely grown, with many high-street names developing curve lines and newly launched labels catering solely to this audience.

ASOS is one of the platforms that have led the way in plus-size fashion, not only in its own Curve line but also in the other brands it stocks. It's so refreshing to see a site dedicate a whole section to curve styles—and one which is packed full of chic, trend-led pieces that don't compromise on fit. Neon Rose is one brand whose curve line has always impressed me, and I've also recently spotted some seriously cool dresses from Never Fully Dressed Plus. 

Too long have plus-size women put up with substandard design, but I feel confident that we're on the path to better size diversity within the fashion world. And while dedicated curve lines are a great start, here's hoping that eventually larger sizes will be incorporated into designers' mainline collections. But in the meantime, whether you're looking for a party-ready dress or an elevated basic, I've found a plus-size brand for you. In 2009, Alexandra Shulman, then editor in chief of British Vogue, sent an ultimatum to leaders in the industry, pleading with designers to stop only creating "miniscule" sample sizes. Despite Shulman's clout, a decade later, there are still many of the same problems regarding sizing.

Celebrities like Bryce Dallas Howard and Leslie Jones have spoken about how impossible it is to borrow a red carpet gown if you aren't a size 6. Many designers and high-street brands still don't cater to sizes bigger than a 12, even though the average dress size in the UK is a 16. However, what has changed is that hundreds of women have joined Shulman and are using their positions in the industry to call for change. Thanks to these insights, we now know it's not just about sample sizes—this is part of a bigger problem.

It's not just editors and body-positive influencers who are speaking up. I spoke to designers, model bookers and curve models about the improvements we have seen regarding size inclusion over the past 10 years, and the work that still needs to be done. These women can't touch on every single problem regarding sizing, but they can give some insight into why it can be so slow to make fundamental shifts and how we can all get things moving a little quicker.

Emma Grede, co-founder of Good American (the denim brand she launched with Khloé Kardashian), designs for a curvier shape in mind and surmises the situation perfectly: "As quick as fashion is to change trends, they are still so slow to fundamentally shift the way they do business."

Levi Palmer and Matthew Harding, designers of Palmer//Harding: "We've always done loose styles in a size 6 to 16 and noticed that we had many women larger than a 16 who were able to fit in the looser styles and were buying them. So 16 would always be the first size to sell out for us; we decided to introduce an 18 based on these figures."

"We also have always spoken about inclusivity in our brand and wanted to make sure that that message correlated in our sizing. It is in our plans to try to increase a size each year, but as a small brand, we need to do it slowly and correctly, because grading sizes isn't just as easy as adding a bit of extra fabric to the width of a pattern."

"We want to make samples and try them on fit models in larger sizes to be sure the proportions work for those sizes as well. Design-wise, it's not too difficult to expand your sizes as long as you stay away from ultra-waisted designs, which isn't in our brand DNA anyway. As far as logistical challenges, everyone carries weight differently, so this can be challenging to decide on how your size 18 will fit; what works for one size 18 body doesn't necessarily work for another. I'd like to see more variety in sizing in fashion media—not just a plus-sized 16 and up."

"It would be good to see a variety of all sizes in-between to show that there's beauty in all sizes. Additionally, it would be good to see more retailers buying into larger sizes and doing marketing activity to inform their untapped customer base about their inclusive offering."

Tyler McCall, deputy editor of Fashionista.com: "Since I wrote an essay about the lack of diversity in street style last February (and Lindsay Peoples wrote a great follow up for The Cut), I've seen an uptick in improvement for sure."

"I think some of it was just a question of photographers not realising their own biases. I do agree with some of the photographers that there's generally a lack of diversity in attendance at the shows, especially in some European cities. Fashion is an industry that tends to reward thin, cis white women across all sectors, which means a lot of people who work in fashion fit that bill. That being said, it's not like there aren't bigger-bodied women out there! It's a question of shaking things up and looking for people who aren't the now-standard for street style."

"I think there's really great work being done with inclusive sizing from newer, more independent brands, but it really frustrates me that there's no progress from the big luxury brands. If anyone has the resources to dedicate to expanding sizing options, it's these companies. They already produce small amounts of their ready-to-wear lines anyway, so they aren't risking producing a size run in bulk and losing a lot of money.

"I know that it's a highly aspirational level of fashion, but women want to see themselves represented there too, and it would be nice to be able to splurge once in a while. It's to the point where it feels like snobbery is the only reason why brands don't expand sizing these days. There's a lot of excuses out there, but when it comes down to it, if you want to make it happen, there are ways to do it."

"I'm a bit biased, but I love the work 11 Honoré is doing in this space. It's also super frustrating that a lot of the more mass retailers or contemporary brands aren't doing better either, for similar reasons. I can't shop at a lot of labels fashion editors love because they don't go beyond a UK 14 or a 16. Julee Wilson once said that if a brand or designer doesn't extend sizes, they must not like money, and I really love that as a response."

"With all the conversation around extended sizing and inclusivity, if you're not actively trying to make it happen now, you just like losing out on an entire market share and also, you're a snob."

Billie Bhatia, fashion news editor and stylist: "As a rule of thumb, there's still a huge sizing problem in the fashion industry. I'm forever searching for the oversized version of what I want in hopes that I too can sport a gingham tea dress and puff-sleeved blouse. There are so many exciting contemporary brands on the market that are designing brilliant pieces for the modern woman, but the biggest size they're offering is a 16 (which is really a 14), and it's really disappointing.

"There's a huge gap in the market for directional clothing for women of all sizes. Really, who doesn’t want to feel like they look cool? Of course, there are dedicated curve brands, but often I find the offering falls flat when it comes to stylish pieces. ASOS Curve is by far the market leader in delivering a vast collection in a whole host of sizes. But the rest of the curve market feels a lot like jersey basics."

"When it comes to high street, often I don't even bother setting foot in store. Zara is basically a complete write-off, which is such a shame because they have so many great pieces I would love to wear, but even my friends who are a size 12 often struggle to fit into their XL sizes.

"The best way to make more size-inclusive pieces isn't to make a separate curve or plus-sized collection but just to extend the sizes of mainline pieces, and that should be across the board of high-street and mid-market and designer brands. After all, there are billions of pounds these brands are missing out on."

Olivia Rose Havelock, founder of Olivia Rose the Label: "I think that changes are definitely being made now in regards to size inclusivity, and I'm sure more brands will follow suit in the near future. I design for literally any size—from the smallest to the largest, as you can add your own custom measurements at no extra cost to all the items on my website when purchasing."

"I just don't see why anyone should have to miss out on buying an item. I want to be able to offer anyone and everyone a chance to own a piece of my clothing. As I hand-make everything to order, I'm lucky in that I can offer a custom service to all my customers—whether they're larger, smaller, petite or tall. I can do pretty much whatever they ask. I have all the patterns of my designs that I make myself from scratch in a range of standard sizes, and I then use these as a guideline for any custom measurements that have been given to me."

"It's definitely a lot more time-consuming, as I'm essentially taking more time out to create a new garment from the unique measurements, but again, I run the whole brand myself, as well as make everything myself, so I'm able to offer this right now. It takes so much longer than people will think and is more expensive. Depending on whether it's a handmade brand or a brand that uses a factory, it can be a lot more costly to create and offer a larger size range. There's a lot that goes into being able to make it happen that people probably don't realise."

Bethan Holt, fashion news and features director at The Telegraph: "This week, I found a great brand on Matchesfashion.com that we really wanted to feature in Stella, but when we checked the stock levels, we found it only went up to a size 12. Most of all, that left me confused. Why wouldn't you want to see your clothes to be available to as many women as possible? Firstly, because you'd make more money. But the sad truth is that many labels don't want bigger women wearing their clothes."

"I really admire designers like Christian Siriano, who embraces women of all shapes and makes them feel good, whereas other brands would not. Some designers are coming around to the idea—Dolce and Gabbana is increasing the breadth of sizes it offers. I saw that Elle Fanning fainted at Cannes this month, blaming it on a combination of being on her period and her dress being too tight. It's such a shame that designers can't create samples that are more realistic to accommodate something more than teeny model figures."

"The simple, technical excuse of not having much fabric to make samples has perpetuated this awful situation of women feeling inadequate about themselves and models having to diet to fit into the clothes they're expected to wear. There must be another way."

Sara Brown, influencer and designer at ASOS: "I have always been 'bigger.' Luckily, I grew up as a size 16, so I could just fit into most high-street brands, but even at that, I feel like I've never fit into a pair of Zara trousers. There was never the option to size up or to buy something oversized if I would prefer that fit. That's why now, at a size 22, I'm so overjoyed to find brands where the size range means I can buy a size 28 in a jacket if I want to style it oversized."

"I work as a designer at ASOS and studied fashion for over five years. All the way through my education, I went against the norm of making sample size 10 pieces, and I made my work so it could fit me. I believed there was no point in designing something if I couldn't have the opportunity to wear it myself. Even during the educational stage in a designer's career, it is made increasingly difficult to make clothes for bigger girls. I needed to buy my own mannequin and grade up all the dress pattern blocks myself before I could even get started."

"This added level of effort required has continued into the industry. It takes more money, more time and more risk to expand size ranges past the size 6–to-16 norm. Although it's a horrible truth to learn, I understand why brands would struggle to provide all their products up to a size 32 or beyond. It must be especially hard for smaller startup brands; the risk might just be too much for the dying brands of our high street."

"After removing my empathy for these brands, I still stand annoyed. I'm frustrated that finding trend items in my size is near impossible. I'm really fed up with being told that fat people would prefer to wear the toned-down version, that they'd prefer the key season's piece that everyone else is wearing in fluorescent yellow in beige."

"Where we see brands that thankfully offer a plus-sized range—why is it that the range is usually made up of 'basics' for your 'staple wardrobe'? I don't want that—I want the all-singing-all-dancing party piece, the piece everyone is wearing, the piece that would get featured on Who What Wear. I basically want to be included in the hype that's happening. If everyone is wearing this gorgeous dress from Zara, I want the option to join that gang."

"ASOS's Curve range has been killing it for years, but I'm ever grateful for the efforts they're putting into helping smaller brands expand their sizes. I love Neon Rose Plus and New Girl Order Curve for bringing trendier items to the plus-sized arena. If I'm looking for quality, I'll head to Navabi, where you can find quality and considered fit. I'm a big fan of M&S's trend pieces and am thrilled that they go up to a size 24."

"I'm so excited by the progress, but there's still a massive gap in the market that I hope brands keep reacting to. I'm so happy to be a part of this movement making fashion size-inclusive; I want rid of the idea that a fat girl cannot be chic."

Elizabeth Miles, model booker at Models1: "I want to see the stigma and negative connotations that the term 'plus sized' is associated with dropped entirely. We've definitely come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years, in terms of diversity. Essentially, I'd like to see my curve girls work alongside straight-size girls without it being made such a big deal or there being too much of a political divide."

"I started model booking over three years ago, and the significant shift I've within the 'curve' world is pretty incredible. One of our top girls, Emma Breschi, was the first-ever curve model to shoot a campaign for Vivienne Westwood, which I think is a pretty impressive accolade. Overall, the industry has become much more inclusive, which is so positive and empowering."

"It's becoming much more of a norm now to receive work for curve models. When we receive briefs from clients, 99% of the time, they're requesting a curve model as well as a new face, main-board girl and a male model. Editorial clients such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar are more open to using girls of different shapes now, whereas before, there was much more commercial work on offer than editorial. We represent girls from a dress size 12 to an 18, and the girls are all very different shapes."

"So it can be a little more involved when sending packages. Certain clients have specific requirements in terms of dress sizes that work best for them and their online demographic when it comes to sales. So typically, when I receive a brief—unlike the other boards who have to fit the brief in terms of aesthetic, hair colour and eye colour, etc.—I always have to consider the girl's shape and dress size."

Emma Grede, co-founder and CEO of Good American: "My invention at Good American is a size 15 [ed. note—in American sizes]. It was something that came from pure data, and when you have a company like ours—which is 70% direct-to-consumer—you have all of this amazing data make decisions from.

"We were getting so many returns around a size 16, and from that came an amazing piece of insight that we were missing a size. The interesting thing with 'regular sizing' and 'plus sizes' is that there's a pattern jump in between, so some of our garments have two patterns and three patterns. But if you look at the two in the paper form, they're completely different.

"The plus-sized pattern has curves in the hip, calf and thigh. When you look at size grading, it jumps between sizes, so when you go between a 2 and a 4, a 4 and a 6 and a 6 and an 8, there are inches between them. But when you go between a 16 and an 18, 18–20 and 22–24, there are more inches between, so in the middle, there's a massive jump. Not only do the inches jump, but you're also dealing with the curvature. You're doing this huge size jump."

"There's no universal sizing standard—some brands start plus sizes at 14, some at 16, some even later at an 18. For us, it was about understanding when our pattern grading changed and where the biggest jumps in the measurements were. When you look at it on paper you go, 'Oh, that's really simple,' so you just insert a size in the middle. You're one size in Topshop and a totally different size in Saint Laurent. Everyone is basically making it up."

"For us, adding in this size captured this whole new customer. There are a lot of women who sit between missy (this is the name for 'straight' sizes) and plus sizes, so it was an extension of what's in our regular straight pattern and adding an extra size on. I reckon there are 20 million women in America who are that size. We sold two-and-a-half-thousand pairs on the first day."

"I've spent the past two years looking at why everyone has a different size grade. You definitely find in higher-end fashion, things tend to be graded smaller, and things tend to be more democratic the lower down the fashion chain you go. I don't think there's a need for people to have a universal sizing standard, but I think there's a need to have more sizes.

"There's a need for people to wake up and service a customer that's there. As quick as fashion is to change trends, they're so slow to fundamentally shift the way they do business. The success of Good American should be a lesson to everyone."

Lauren May, curve model: "I'd love to see more 'in-between' sizing available to women, as we're all proportioned so differently. No size 14, for example, is exactly the same in shape or measurements. I feel as though sizing with brands is not individual or realistic. I can wear a 12, 14 or 16, depending on the brand or type of clothing, which is crazy. Sizing can also make you more conscious of your body if your sizes fluctuate so much between brands.

"I feel that curve models are being used a lot more in the media (there has been a massive influx of curve models and bloggers, compared to a few years ago when curve modelling was more of a niche market), but there's still a long way to go. There has been a positive change, but also, a curve model is now more of an 'add-on' to normalise brands and make them appear more inclusive, or they'll be represented by brands that purely market towards plus-sized women."

Kellie Brown, influencer, writer and the creator of the #FatAtFashionWeek hashtag: "I'd love for inclusive sizing to be the norm rather than brands selling clothes beyond a size 16 feeling like a unicorn. When brands do expand into plus sizes, it's often only adding two to four additional sizes and feels like a press play for 'inclusivity.' I decided to create the #FatAtFashionWeek hashtag because women of all shapes and sizes are contributing to this industry in major ways beyond the runway.

"The conversation around inclusivity at fashion week centres around using larger models, but beyond that, plus-sized women are editors, writers, stylists, makeup artists, marketing managers, PRs, cast agents and more. I want to encourage other bigger people who want to work in this industry to jump in and join us. The reaction has been incredible—I love seeing the hashtag used at fashion weeks around the world!"

You may recall that I've spoken before about the fashion hurdles you have to jump when you've got bigger boobs. A while ago, I recommended to you the top styles that celebrate larger busts rather than fight against them. It's not a case of telling you what to never ever consider trying or to avoid completely (and I'd always encourage you to wear whatever you feel comfortable in), but I know from experience that certain silhouettes haven't worked out well for me.

One of the hardest summertime items to shop for outside of anything like dresses and tops that are off-the-shoulder or strapless is swimwear. A lot of swimwear brands don't accommodate for larger cup sizes—let alone offer a fuller sizing range overall—and many styles can be cut to not support. Triangles are notoriously flimsy, and probably unsuitable for an active day on the beach or by the pool.

The fact is that the average bra size in the UK is on the rise, with the latest reports landing on a 36DD as the nation's go-to. The lingerie market has been catching up to cater for this demand, but the swimwear one is still a little behind. Many of the cute must-have designer swim pieces you'll see on Instagram may state they go up to an L (or larger), but you'll often discover that these sizes don't translate well into real life. 

There are a few brands—both new and old, mass market and independent—that I would recommend to anyone else full of bosom. But there are also certain fabrics and cuts that are worth keeping an eye out for…

1. Anything adjustable is always a good idea. The more you can tailor your fit, the better.

2. Anything with thicker straps will support your boobs more—this is good timing because sportier styles are in.

3. Stretch fabrics like crinkly ones are really good for adapting to curves, even if you buy a smaller size.

4. Try to mix and match your bottoms and the top half in order to find the right size for both. It may be that you're bigger up top but wouldn't want the matching size bikini briefs.

5. Look for a little extra coverage. But not because you "need" to cover up. Quite the opposite—it's about making the most of your fab assets, and that teeny tiny triangle bikini is unlikely to support well (unless it has lots of hidden wiring, sidebands etc).

I absolutely love Hunza G and have been a massive fan right from the beginning. I first bought a swimsuit when I was breastfeeding, as they come in one size and stretch with you. I found them to be super comfortable and easy to feed in, as, during this stage, you shouldn't wear underwire because it can put pressure on your milk.

Anyway, I still wear the same swimsuit now, as it's shrunk with me, still holding everything in place perfectly. The fabric is thicker than you might think, so it works almost like shapewear.

Although you'll need to sidestep some styles, colours and prints that feel suited to a more mature audience, I can promise you that there are some absolute gems to be found on Figleaves's website. The brand is experts in the field of DD+ sizing and, as such, it's working hard to create swim pieces that fit like a glove. I'd suggest looking at more classic underwired cup shapes in neutral colours and prints for something that's long-lasting and worth investing in.

Anyone shopping for plus-sized options charts ASOS Curve as one of the best online destinations in the world, so it only makes sense that its swimwear offering would follow suit. I would say the plainer pieces are more sophisticated than the printed ones.

Malia Mills is great, as the styles are really timeless but still current and all made in America. The brand also goes up to a 38 EE and you can mix and match different bottom sizes to your bra size, which, as I mentioned before, is what many of us are looking for.

The Chrysan-style top I have chosen is underwired with adjustable straps. I love this style, as it offers lots of support but still has a great shape to it. It would work best with high-waisted bottoms to give a pin-up look. The Mrs Mehta top is also great and a very similar style if you're looking for something more girly.

Arket has taken a leaf out of the book of my friend's brand Auria (who, sadly, don’t offer plus size) by going down a sustainable route for its latest swimwear offer.

The new range is made from Econyl, which is yarn derived from nylon waste and recovered fishing nets. The brand goes up to sizes 18 or 20, but I suggest ordering online, as when I've been in-store, they tend to have fewer sizes in stock.

Okay, so this French brand has thought of everything! It has cutting edge styles and colours in a huge range of sizes.

I'm loving the colours on the purple-and-orange one below and the fact that there are so many ways you can wear it. Just keep experimenting with the wide ties.

New Look is offering a great selection of plus-sized swimsuits, and although I question the sustainability factor of buying swimwear from fast-fashion sources when so many brands out there have developed more sustainable approaches, the problem is these other brands are not offering plus sizes.

Hopefully, we will see a drastic change in this over the next couple of years, but for the time being, if you need to buy from affordable labels, I'd suggest choosing a swimsuit that is classic and will look chic summer after summer.

This particular New Look one stood out to me, as it has an attached waist belt that is really slimming and comes in a variation of colours and animal prints.

Trousers and zip-up knee boots are two fashion evils that can reduce me to a crumbling shell of my former self. Being curvy and only 5'1" makes shopping for anything quite tortuous, but I'm almost at the point where I avoid looking for trousers entirely, wearing the same worn-out ones I already own over and over again, or simply defaulting to dresses and skirts. It's a shame because I adore suiting and love the idea of wearing trousers to work.

When you find a pair that's right, they're so right, but when they're wrong, I feel like crawling into a hole under my desk and wishing the day to start over. I can come to terms with hemming everything I'll ever purchase and occasionally having to sacrifice the look of a silhouette so that I don't trip over. However, the constant "big on the waistband but too tight on the thighs" fit struggle that I seem to find across both designer and high-street brands is enough to make me give up on trousers forever.

If this problem sounds familiar to you, you've probably shared some of my other experiences: I once left Zara in tears after I was unable to fit into the largest size it carries (which, let's face it, isn't even that large at all). I also send 99% of my online trouser orders back and have been known to throw a total hissy fit in the changing room of a denim department. (Only in front of my mum, though, so it basically never happened, okay?)

A great portion of my job is to ensure that you, dear reader, don't get stuck in this terrible shopping or styling rut. So I had to face my fear for the greater good. I spent four sweaty, stressful and frankly quite depressing hours trying on every single pair of kecks I could get my hands on in order to find the best of the bunch.

I went to luxury and high-street retailers, spoke to some staff for advice and reached out to my other curvaceous friends in the fashion industry for help. I also experimented with a range of silhouettes just in case I'd been overlooking something magical this whole time.

Anna Cascarina, a mid-sized Instagram influencer, tells me, "I'm a size 14–16 bottom, and buying trousers when you're bigger than a size 12 is often a struggle—especially if you're after a certain silhouette. We don't want to wear cropped wide-leg trousers all of the time!"

Many of the pairs I tried looked awful (I won't share those pictures with you—delete!), but I think I have started to decipher which labels, cuts, fabrics and shops will be kindest to your thighs.

For context, I'm a size 10–12 in most items, but always a 12+ in trousers. I realise this doesn't put me in the plus-sized category and that shopping for pants in larger sizes becomes an even harder task thanks to the poor selection on offer. What I do hope is that there are enough tips below to help anyone on a mission for perfect-fit pants.

The 3 Key Silhouettes That Work for Curvy Girls

On Hannah Almassi: Theory Wide-Leg Crepe Trousers (£315)

This is the failsafe, super-classic option every woman—no matter her size or figure—should have in her armoury. However, it has to be said that a well-cut pair of high-waisted, wide-leg trousers can really do wonderful things if you've got a small waist and bigger bottom/thighs. You need the trousers to fall from your hips without tautened horizontal lines cropping up across your thighs. If that's happening, then your trousers are too tight.

These were some of the most elegant wide-leg pants I tried on during my experiment. I already had an inkling Theory would work well for me given its heritage in tailoring and the fact that it caters so well to the working woman. Theory's wide-leg trousers ticked all the boxes and were rendered in a slimming, comfortable crepe fabric. I realise their hanger appeal is minimal, but one does need hardworking, long-lasting items in a capsule wardrobe.

I'd recommend wearing a fitted top or sweater so that you're balancing out the fullness of the trouser legs. Heels work with these, but so do sneaks or flats (although, personally, that's not my jam).

On Hannah Almassi: Topshop Green Check Trousers (£42)

Peg trousers often have some volume around the thighs (tick) and are often designed with a higher waist that's also adjustable (tick), which helps keep everything neatly balanced. Topshop is particularly good at this trouser style, and after I hesitated to even put them on, I was shocked to find that these checked pants were very slimming.

Plaid can often be rather unflattering on my legs, so it was nice to feel that my curvy body doesn't have to be restricted to plain, dark trousers only. This really proves a point that I mention further down in this piece: Although there are some rules worth following, it's also important to dare yourself to experiment with some wildcard options. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Again, I'd suggest that any trouser with a higher rise looks best with a slimmer-fitting top: "Personally, I find I need to show a sliver of ankle for trousers to look good on me. A cropped length helps make my short legs look more in proportion with my body," says Maxine Eggenberger, Who What Wear UK fashion contributor.

Maxine and I have had many conversations about the fashion plight of being curvy, and she's convinced a simple shoe trick will help: "Strangely, I feel like the effect is enhanced with an ankle-strap shoe."

On Hannah Almassi: Valentino Scale-Print Paperbag-Waist Silk Trousers (£1200)

Of my fairly limited trouser options at home, the majority are culottes. Their high-waisted and A-line cut fall lower than mid-calf so that they're as leg-lengthening as can be. In the winter, I'll wear them with long boots for a seamless effect, and in the summer, they'll work with everything from flat slides to strappy heels.

This is a trouser style that works well in different weight fabrics also—such as these silky palazzo-style pants from Valentino. The cut can be just as easy to navigate in a thicker herringbone tweed or cotton gabardine too. These particular culottes would look far better with a little white top or camisole than they do with my wintry black blouse, but they ticked all of the boxes, felt truly trendy and are worthy of a splurge (should you fancy it).

If you do have money to burn and want to invest, I'd recommend heading to MatchesFashion.com's physical stores. The staff there were really helpful in offering me a variety of options to try on. They also offered me their insider intel on which designer brands might work best. Sidenote: I must apologise for the poor quality of the picture. My phone was having a bit of a meltdown with the changing room's lighting setup for some reason…

Always Look for Styles That Sit on Your Waist—Not Lower

On Hannah Almassi: Me+Em Check Man Pant (£189)

If you've got short legs like me, you need your trousers to be high-waisted—no arguments. Sounds easy, but locating a pair that doesn't gape at the back appears to be as complicated as Brexit. That's when it's imperative to keep on trying different brands to find your perfect match. I had the most luck in every single trouser silhouette at Me+Em.

I've spoken to the brand's PR team for some time about its in-house trouser development. I learned that the whole design process takes much longer than others and uses multiple fit models of different sizes to give them really rigorous testing. I was hoping I'd find a pair here, and I did!

The lovely in-store staff are equipped with great advice on fit and sizing. They also have the persuasive skills to get you to test different styles (they literally brought me every single available trouser to try on). The majority of the brand's cuts do sit on your waist—whether wide-leg, cigarette or culotte.

Forget Labels—Size Up If You Need To

On Hannah Almassi: Karen Millen High-Waist Tailored Trousers (£130)

If you're straying from the above tried-and-tested silhouettes (wide-leg, peg and culottes), it's highly likely you'll have to opt for a different size. Any trousers that are cut to a skinny or cigarette-leg fit always appear to suddenly shrink upon sight. I had success in my usual size at Karen Millen, but these trousers would have perhaps been even better one size up. The British brand is a secret source when it comes to flattering patterns. I've often thought its dresses and coats are really good fits, but now I'm intrigued by the office-ready pants too.

I'll always advocate for sizing to be standardised in the fashion industry (how nice would it be to really know what your size is and just pick it up in any store without a fuss or risk of failure?), but that will probably not happen in my lifetime. That being said, it's important to just use these numbers as a guide of what to reach for first—not to be emotionally attached to. If you find a pair of beautiful trousers that look incredible on you but the label says they're two sizes bigger than your usual size, pick it up. Who cares? Who even knows?

Ignore French Contemporary Brands

On Hannah Almassi: Me+Em Button Cuff Trousers (£189)

I won't name names, but I spent a great deal of time exploring a range of French contemporary brands just to see if I was going mad. Everything on these rails maxed out at a French size 38 (UK 10), and even that—as many will know from experience—is cut small.

I had a bit of luck with some luxury French brands (Chloé had some nice options, for example), but overall, it was really disappointing to see such a lack of goods for anyone with a bit of junk in their trunk. At this stage in shopping hell, I made a mental note to not revisit these brands in the future—no point in creating unnecessary hurt. One thing I did discover on my travels was that when you've got a curve to your stomach, it's best to opt for styles that have front pockets, side pockets, zip-fronts or front-detailing like pleats or an interesting D-ring fastening. Any trousers that I tried on with absolutely no detail at the front ended up making me look like I had a bigger tummy than I do.

Eggenberger also has some sage advice for your behind: "Where I can, I always invest in styles with back pockets. Rather than detracting from my bum, I find they help sculpt it."

On Hannah: Topshop Check Wide-Leg Trousers (£46)

During my travels, I developed a few favourites (Topshop being the best at the moment), but I've also had successes in the past at Uterqüe and Marks and Spencer.

My fashion friends have some more affordable stores that win in this department. "My go-to stores are & Other Stories, Arket and COS for their simple aesthetics and core silhouettes, but I also find ASOS is brilliant for its curve and plus ranges too," says Cascarina.

I'd add that Karen Millen, L.K.Bennett and Reiss are often worth a try if you've got a little more cash to play with and are looking for more classic silhouettes instead of trend-driven styles.

Try Everything on With the Right Shoes, Underwear and Top

On Hannah Almassi: Me+Em Grosgrain Stripe Slim Crop Trousers (£129)

On the day I went climbing Mount Trouserest, I wore simple underwear that didn't dig in anywhere or would create any unsightly lines. I also took a pair of heels with me in a bag, and tried on different tops and jumpers if store staff offered them to me. It's good to see how a pair of trousers would work differently with what's potentially lying in your own closet. I also wore leggings to go on this shopping mission, as they're so easy to take on and off (it sounds obvious, but it's easy to get flustered, overheat and just sack it all off).

So what did I come away with? Well, apart from the fact that I actually bought a Topshop dress and a knitted cardigan/skirt co-ord (whoops), the most unexpected item was a perfect-fit pair of skinny tux pants. These are from Me+Em, and I would never in a million years have tried them on if the manager hadn't suggested I do so. This pair is a popular style for the brand, and I can see why. They're well-tailored, high-waisted and slightly stretchy, aka crease-free and therefore fabulous for travelling. I went down to a size 10 for a slim fit I think will work well for the evening. Shop More Curve-Friendly Trousers

Trying to find something on the high street for a size 18/20 girl is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. So much to rummage through, and no clue of where to begin or whether you'll even find something. It turns out I could only find three needles in the space of three hours. Some curvy girls might say it's a miracle, but I say it's a damn shame.

When there's so much choice online, you might ask, "Why even bother hitting the high street?" But party season often means last-minute invitations and plans, resulting in last-minute shopping. I went to most of the stores on Oxford Street to see what they had on offer. Would I find something, or would it end in misery? Scroll down to find out.

Style Notes: It was pretty much a guarantee that I would find something that fitted me in Evans. I actually own half the party-wear options already, so opted for this sparkly new-in number. It's not really my style, but it's a good option nevertheless. I like that it's flattering to my body shape and bust.

Style Notes: I wasn't sure whether this would fit, but Reserved's size 14 dress managed to fit my size 18/20 body. Is this how it's supposed to look on? Probably not, but I kind of like it. The stretchy material made it comfortable, and the hems didn't feel like they were gasping for air (or maybe they were, but the sheer shock of finding something that fit me overlooked it). The dress isn't currently available online, but I've found a similar style below.

Disappointingly, this is where my shopping trip ended. Despite walking into most of the stores on Oxford Street, I only found two items that fitted me or that I liked. All in all, a failed mission. Thankfully, a fat girl can head to ASOS, Very, River Island or Evans online and find all the sparkle, sequins and glam she needs.

Seeing these items on the high street would be great, but unfortunately, most retailers still have a way to go. All I can say is, thank goodness for the internet. The word "inclusive" is one that many brands are keen to list as an essential part of their identity in 2018. However, despite efforts to be more size diverse, the industry still often ignores a group of consumers altogether. We all know what sample-sized and plus-sized figures look like; however, fewer would know what's actually regarded as "mid-sized." The term includes people who wear sizes 10 to 18, and considering the average dress size in the UK is a 16, millions of people would (and could) actually identify as mid-sized; they just might not know it yet.

Anushka Moore launched the MidSize Collective in July out of frustration that she could only find a handful of influencers that were a size 14 like her. She started the Instagram account as a way to house the outfit pictures of mid-sized influencers she managed to discover, and it has since turned into a powerful community for women to talk about sizing. In just three months, the account has amassed 13,500 followers, and the hashtag #midsizestyle has been used over 8000 times. "We got 3000 followers overnight," Moore explains. "It was slim pickings at first to find influencers for the account, but the response has been so positive and so huge."

"Mid-sized girls tend to be neglected by fashion brands," Anushka explains. "They'll feature really petite girls on their Instagram feeds and often have a separate account for their plus-sized ranges, but they rarely post mid-sized influencer pictures on either pages." That's why the MidSize Collective Instagram account has been so popular: It shows images of stylish women you don't often see on your feed. Many of the biggest fashion influencers are a size 6 or 8; however, Moore is planning to use her platform to give a voice to mid-sized girls with a smaller following.

As well as highlighting cult high-street items and new styling ideas, this is also a place to have more open conversations about body shapes. "Sizing isn't something we talk about too much on a daily basis, so average women who don't work in the industry just don't know too much about sizing," Moore explains. "I only just found out that often the jump between a 14 and 16 is much bigger than with other sizes. I want to make people feel more comfortable in their own skin, to help women feel better about themselves and use the time they spend online in a more positive way—not go on Instagram and feel bad about how they look and feel."

Body-positivity campaigner and model Charli Howard has previously spoken about how there is little work for those who are a size 10 or 12. "I'm an 'in-between' size," she told The Telegraph. "I'll turn up to straight-sized castings and feel like the biggest one there, and go to plus-sized casting and they look at me like, 'What are you even doing here?' I'm a UK 8 to 10, which is still very slim, and when I went to my first plus-sized casting, all these girls were wearing padding to look bigger. I want to be able to model at my own size. The industry should represent girls for who they are rather than putting them into two extreme categories."

Diversity in the fashion industry is a subject under close scrutiny at the moment, and many of these conversations, quite rightly, revolve around better representation and further inclusivity of body diversity. One of the biggest issues facing the shopping public right now is the complexity of clothing sizes. There have been various social media storms surrounding this subject, typically featuring people who are confronted by the fact that a store they’d like to shop at doesn’t stock their size at all (and often seems like it never will).

High-street giant Zara has been criticised for not stocking anything bigger than a size large, and none of us—no matter our clothing size—should accept this as the norm. We decided to dig a little deeper and chat with a number of plus-size influencers and models to find out what it’s really like to shop at a store that so many people rave about. “I would say the best way to find stuff that fits you in Zara is to shop online or look in stores in European cities outside the UK. I basically never find anything in-store in the UK, but if you look on its site, search ‘oversized’ and then filter by things available in an XL, or whatever the item goes up to (because let’s face it, to fit someone of my size it would need to be oversized in their biggest size!). I also find—for some reason—other countries have a better distribution of bigger sizes in their stores. But I guess it’s also good to ask why there’s such an impulse to spend money in a shop that so very clearly excludes plus-size women. We shouldn’t have to work so hard!”

“Before becoming a model, I worked in an Inditex store (not Zara, but Stradivarius, which is part of the same family), and both stores have identical sizes. I had to resign from my role because the uniform didn’t fit. Imagine someone with my size or bigger not only being denied the opportunity to shop at Zara but also being denied the opportunity to work there. Shopping at Zara turns my passion for fashion into a headache. As I’m looking through their already limited XL and XXL sizes I wonder, Do they really think this is the biggest size for a woman? I still shop in Zara but only for accessories, shoes, sometimes bags and big coats. I can only dream of fitting in a pair of their jeans and many other items that I adore. Their designs are original and ironically scream diversity, it’s just a shame their sizes are not aligned.”

I knew the high street fails to adequately cater to those over a size 18, but it wasn't till I started looking for pieces for this latest installment of We Try Before You Buy that I truly appreciated how difficult it can be to find flattering, trend-led pieces in any size. "I'm the same size as my mum, but that doesn't mean I want to wear the same clothes," Ana tells me. "I want to wear the same things as my friends. I prefer it when brands have their main collections in all sizes rather than when they have a separate plus-size collection that's different from the main lines." She says H&M, ASOS and SimplyBe are her three favourites for this, while Levi's is her go-to place for denim. And after trying the yellow coat from M&S (which is available in sizes up to 22), Ana will certainly be adding Marks onto that list. 1. All-Red Everything

The verdict: Red is still one of the strongest colours of the season, and one of our favourite ways to style it is head to toe. Ana said dresses are the hardest thing to shop for, as it's hard to find a cut that's right and flattering around the chest. However, she found this so comfortable that she said it almost felt like she wasn't wearing anything, and the cutouts along the sleeve are an extra-special detail. The best thing about the dress is that you could wear it every day with trainers or sandals, or add statement earrings to turn it into a winning wedding look.

2. Rainbow Brights

On Ana: M&S Linen Rich Longline Duster Coat (£99); Kurt Geiger Major Shoes (£139).

The verdict: Ana's thoughts on this outfit were I NEED THIS COAT. Yes, she was that excited about it—this is one item she is definitely trying after buying. It's a lightweight, expensive-looking fabric and is the perfect way to give your jeans and white T-shirt a 2018 update.

The verdict: Ana really loved the square neckline on this M&S top (this is a key mircrotrend for the season). The nipped-in waist and flared bottom of the top are really flattering, and looks amazing with a classic skinny jean.

While a few brands nail plus size with contemporary and on-trend pieces, wedding dresses are hard to find for those who are dress size 18+. This is surprising, especially seeing that the average dress size for women in the UK was 16 in 2016. And according to a review undertaken by Price Waterhouse Coopers in 2017, the plus-size market is now worth £6.6 billion "and has been outperforming the overall womenswear and menswear markets in the UK."

Thankfully, we're seeing a shift with a few brands starting to do incredible wedding dresses. One such brand is ASOS Curve, and H&M's bridal collection goes up to size 20. But what about more designer options? They're not as easy to discover, but they exist and they're chic. Change is a coming, people. For girls with curves or anyone who has struggled to find their dream trend-ticking, personality-fulfilling fashion pieces over the years due to a shortage in the sizes on offer or a noticeable lack of design credibility, things feel like they're turning in the right direction.

The terminology is still a minefield—should there even be a separation between supposedly "straight" sizes and "plus" sizes? There's still a problematic ratio in regards to how many consumers are looking for sizes outside of the once-standard set and the models that are chosen to feature in campaigns or even be photographed for e-commerce. And, whenever I'm on the hunt for cool "curve" fashion pieces, I do hit a bit of a wall—there's a great deal of lazy, boring, unflattering product out there—and constantly question why this category is such an afterthought when the average size in the UK is a 16. 

It's not all doom and gloom, but there's still room for improvement. And that's why I wanted some key girls in the know to talk candidly about what's good, what's bad and to offer up some IRL advice to any brands and designers out there who are willing to listen. Thanks to my friends over at Models 1—an agency that has a host of brilliant curve models—we assembled a crack team of pros. Keep scrolling to discover what they had to say, and shop some of our current favourite ASOS Curve pieces at the end.

Where do you think the curve fashion industry is going wrong?

I don’t think they are going wrong, but it would be nice to have more pieces that not only hide problem areas (tummy or arms) but items that help create shape. For me, I love a good bodycon dress that has structure so that I don’t have to wear so much shapewear.

Are there particular clothes/pieces/trends that are not working?

For plus I don’t think we have explored enough to see what works and what doesn’t work. I think we have to go back to construction rather than making quick fashion pieces. 

What do you think is good from the plus-size selections available today?

I used to love the fact that in the UK I was able to go into a high street store and see sizes up to 20, however that’s not enough. And I have noticed that stores now separate the sizes by having a “plus size” section. And I find that the fashion in that section isn’t the same as the rest of the store, and treated more as an afterthought, which is a shame. 

I would like to go into a store that I know carry plus sizes and have it all mixed in together rather than having it segregated.

Where do you think the curve fashion industry is going wrong?

They are missing a trick by the lack of variety. Plus size girls just want to wear what everyone is wearing. 

Are there particular clothes/pieces/trends that are not working?

Umm… I think people assume plus girl are just round; sometimes the fit is really off key. Curvy girls can have waists, hips and shapely bodies too!

What do you think is good from the plus-size selections available today?

I’m loving the new lingerie and swimwear collections that have extended their sizing. Growing up, finding the right size was always such a terrible struggle.

Where do you think the curve fashion industry is going wrong?

Honestly, there is much to be praised in the fashion industry. In less than a decade the progress has been phenomenal. We’re now seeing models of all sizes on runways and in beauty campaigns, two areas that were previously the preserve of traditional straight size models.

An area that could be improved on is actually in the way you’ve worded the question itself… Saying "curve/plus" industry implies that there is a difference in the way women of different sizes consume fashion, and this isn’t the case. The sooner we remove the division between straight and plus (curve), the better. I cannot wait for the day when you can walk into any store and get any piece in all sizes.

Another thing that has unfortunately been slow to change is the range of ethnicities and body shapes amongst plus retailers and their advertising. Not every plus woman is white and hourglass, there are so many other body shapes, ethnicities and abilities that need to be shown and represented across the board, not just in one token campaign. ASOS is a brand that does a brilliant job of this, and I really congratulate them for leading change, especially in the UK.

Are there particular clothes/pieces/trends that are not working?

I believe everything is for someone. There really isn’t a trend that doesn’t work as style is very personal, and I don’t think anyone should tell anyone how to dress or how to feel about the way they wish to express themselves.

What do you think is good from the plus-size selections available today?

Today brands are realizing that plus women are not ashamed of their bodies. The previous school of thought was to hide everything in oversized shapeless garments. But now we have so much choice, and the access to clothes has improved (online particularly; physical choice has a long way to go). Whatever you’re style you can usually find something that you love to express yourself.

Where do you think the curve fashion industry is going wrong?

I feel like curvy woman are sometimes put in a box as to what they can wear, and most of the items available to curvy woman are not the most flattering. I also think that brands advertise their curve items as a niche market when curvy women are very much the norm and should be included on websites with bigger sizes added.

Are there particular clothes/pieces/trends that are not working?

No, because I think with confidence you can wear whatever you feel looks good for you.

What do you think is good from the plus-size selections available today?

I like that brands such as Adidas and Puma have added curve ranges to sites such as ASOS, but curvy women are no different to any other women—I would like to see more campaigns with brands using curve and straight-sized models together instead of one or the other.

Where do you think the curve fashion industry is going wrong?

I think the plus-sized industry has a problem where it uses the wrong models to represent the product they are trying to sell. It seems wrong to have a size 10 model photograph in a range that starts at a size 14 or 16. It would be great if there were true to size models showing off the clothes at all the sizes available. 

Are there particular clothes/pieces/trends that are not working?

I think there is something missing from the market—plus-sized brands tend not to offer sportswear for women. This exacerbates a stigma that already exists that women over a certain size do not work out/can not even try, which is very alienating. 

What do you think is good from the plus-size selections available today?

I think the plus-sized industry is offering amazing swimwear and lingerie. It has become a lot more flattering and diverse, showing that all girls can be sexy at whatever size—plus-size girls do not need to be limited to a swimming costume!

Being blessed with a large bust isn't a problem. In fact, it can be brilliant. That is, however, until you go shopping. As someone with a D-cup (so the smaller end of the full-chested spectrum), trying to find tops, dresses and coats that fit around my upper half can be a bit of a nightmare, especially as I'm also a size 10.

However, it's worth noting that there are many brands out there that cater to people with D-cups and bigger. Plenty of high-street brands now stock plus-size lines, not to mention some specifically bigger-bust lingerie brands that recognise everyone has a different body shape. And if you're not plus-size but still need some extra breathing space in the chest region? There are a few brands that I'd recommend shopping from that give you a flattering shape and enough room so you don't have any bra-flashing situations. 1. Mango

Mango has a plus-size section? Why, yes—it does. Mango's plus-size range was separate at one point but has now been integrated into its core collections, so particular pieces come in sizes up to a 4XL or UK 26. 

2. H&M+

For those on a budget, H&M+ caters to plus sizes, and we suggest opting for the brand's knitwear and dresses—especially if you have a larger chest.

3. COS

For those who are petite, COS isn't necessarily the best place to go shopping, as some pieces can swamp your size. However, coats from the shop are brilliant for fitting round a bigger bust. Just remember to go for a belted version if you want to define your waist.

4. Warehouse

Warehouse introduced Warehouse Curve, which caters to sizes 18 to 24. It covers all your sartorial needs, but we're particularly impressed with its range of flattering dresses that will work for every event (weddings, work, brunch, you name it). The best for a bigger bust is the wrap dresses and more formfitting frocks.

5. ASOS

ASOS has really nailed it when it comes to catering to its bigger-bust customers. ASOS Curve offers such a gorgeous and on-trend range of pieces, but the online superstore also has its range of swimwear that caters to D-cups and up all year round, aptly titled ASOS Fuller Bust. Bravo.

6. River Island

Another brand that has set out to do stylish plus-size wear is River Island. Head here for expensive-looking fitted jackets and figure-flattering blouses for a chic silhouette.

7. Topshop Curve

As part of Topshop's new chapter under ASOS, it has (finally) introduced a curve section. Many of us fondly remember the days of shopping at Topshop, and the new addition of curve has us returning to the long-loved brand. 

8. Never Fully Dressed

Since its inception, Never Fully Dressed has created multi-wear styles to be dressed up or down for all bodies. You'll find an array of unique prints in every colour imaginable alongside plain classic styles. 

9. Karen Millen

Karen Millen has been a go-to on the high street for plus-size pieces for longer than we can remember, and it's no wonder. You'll find plenty of perfect workwear separates here—think tapered trousers, camisoles to layer under tailoring and smart dresses—alongside easy off-duty dresses, excellent knitwear and the accessories are well worth a look too.

10. Needle & Thread

Needle & Thread has become known for the considered range of sizes and recognises that people come in all shapes and sizes. The brand has built a following from its feminine and whimsical designs. If you're looking for occasionwear, this is a great place to start.

Ah, curves. Some of us have them, some of us don't. Some of us would like a little more junk in the trunk, some of us moan on repeat about slimming down. Whichever camp you fall into, there are certain outfits that both work hard to embrace and optimise curves, as well as create the illusion of shapeliness. If you're straight up and down, there are some great tips to take from women who have learnt to dress voluptuous bodies and vice versa. Perhaps you've felt too voluptuous to wear certain items, and we're here to blow those myths right out of the water.

I'm certainly no supermodel myself, so over the years I've managed to work out what does and doesn't suit my more hourglass shape. There's no one formula to fit all bodies, and there's no one formula to fulfil the nuances of our individual, personal tastes, but there are a few handy formulas that some of the coolest curvy girls we know rely upon. So keep reading to see these trusty outfit combinations, and shop the key piece for each.

Style Notes: Aglae's super-cute minidress is the ideal shape for girls who want to show off their waists and wear something with a short hemline. A-line skirt styles and two-tone pumps are both dead certs for flattering legs of all shapes, sizes and lengths, so it's a highly confident combination.

Style Notes: Trust Beyoncé to have this casual look perfected. Jeans are best worn with a higher rise (that always elongates legs and highlights your waist), and while high heels make some of us feel more confident, this look totally works with flats. Style Notes: Not only is wearing one colour head-to-toe a trick for looking taller for any petite girls out there, but it's also damn powerful too. Dresses that have ruching details are also great for making the most of curves or even creating them if you don't have them—you can often tighten in the places you want to, and then loosen in others. Style Notes: A crop top and pencil skirt look cracking on everyone. Revealing the smallest part of your body and being an outfit that works for all kinds of events, this is a dream formula to lean on. Take Ashley Graham's tip, and wear yours with metallic sandals this holiday season.

Style Notes: Jada Sezer's created a far more interesting way to wear a basic pair of black jeans and a white tee—the flattering addition of a corset belt not only looks sassy, but it also helps smooth the line between jeans and a T-shirt.

Style Notes: Erica Davies has just solved the workwear conundrum for December. Her waist-nipping culottes are just right for a chunky knit to be tucked into, and even with mid-heel shoes, you'll feel instantly pulled together. Thank you, ED!

Style Notes: If you ever feel like blazers hide your curves, then simply take Ada Oguntudo's styling hack, and cinch one at the waist. Looks particularly good for a slinky midi dress and longline pull-on boots.

Style Notes: This long tube style (in a decent fabric—flimsy jersey doesn't flatter anyway) is the dream ticket for both maximising curves and creating them if you want to look more voluptuous. Iskra Lawrence's dress style naturally lends itself to heels, as it has a going-out vibe, but it can be equally cool with sneaks on a more casual day. It always looks most Jessica Rabbit–esque when the hemline cuts above the ankle.

Style Notes: If you've ever felt a bit daunted by PJ dressing, I'd highly recommend opting for a belted shacket style—it's much more flattering on all body shapes, thanks to fastening across the waist rather than hiding it. This means you can go wild with prints and colours, but we're just as into Hayley Hasselhoff's chic all-black version.

Style Notes: Charlotte Kuhrt is a woman after my own matchy-matchy heart. Tuck any elaborate sweater into your waistband, and that waist-bulk a knit can bring will be minimised.

ASOS is groundbreaking for many reasons. For starters, it revolutionised the way we shop for affordable pieces online. It’s also given us incredible access to more vintage and niche brands we might not have seen otherwise. Back in 2010, when the brand launched its own plus-size range, Curve, the online retailer made a real difference to the market by catering to a demand for bigger sizes.

While many competitors trotted out middle-of-the-range basics that inspired no one, ASOS knew its customers wanted more. The Curve side of the brand now creates great directional pieces as well as more basic wardrobe staples. For example, instead of just the one black dress on offer, there are more than 50 styles in the range to choose from, whether that’s a pretty broderie-anglaise frock to a shirred dress, there’s one to suit every different kind of taste. That feels like more than a step in the right direction.
