I don’t say this lightly: I've been genuinely shocked to see just how many fashion insiders have swapped sleek kitten-heel boots for towering platform knee-high boots this season.

The switch seemed to crystallise this week in Paris, when a wave of celebrities descended on the city for the start of Paris Fashion Week. Saint Laurent’s spring/summer 2026 show drew a front row packed with many of entertainment's biggest names—several of whom slipped into the brand’s Nico Platform Boots (£2145) for the glamorous occasion.

Whether it's Britney's chunky flip-flops or Paris's endless rotation of heeled, strappy sandals, these silhouettes are once again influencing stylish women everywhere, especially those on my feed.

Even once cringeworthy styles are being reappraised through a nostalgic lens. According to Who What Wear UK's SEO writer Ava Gilchrist, "Noughties sandals can be borderline ghastly when you think back to them—the idea of wrapping the straps of Gladiator styles around my calf like some sort of deli meat makes me shudder—but there are some exceptions. Namely, the feathered Jimmy Choo heels worn by Carrie Bradshaw, or the Giuseppe Zanotti encrusted crab heels. But, if there is one style I’d have to single out as a favourite, it would be the little platform wedges worn everywhere, from the pool to prom."

Style Notes: A trend I can fully get behind? The platform wedge mule. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, this bold silhouette graced the feet of icons like Cher, the Spice Girls and Britney Spears, transforming a simple peep-toe platform into a symbol of fun. To complete her outfit, the actor reached for Gucci's Horsesbit Wedge Loafer (£875), a GG Emblem bag (£1610) and looped a GG Marmont Thin Belt (£320) around her waist. Choosing a trench coat (a trusty piece Londoners reach for every spring), Edgar-Jones's low-key outfit leaned into timeless staples that helped her craft an outfit that felt uncomplicated and chic—exactly what I'm going for.

Across the pond, actor Sydney Sweeney stepped out in New York taking a similarly chic approach to her styling. Selecting high-waisted, wide-leg trousers in a light cream shade paired with brown platform boots, Sweeney's clever shoe choice stopped her long trousers from dragging on the ground whilst adding structure to her look. Whilst Edger-Jones went for platform loafers and Sweeney reached for an ankle boot, the styling sentiment remains the same—a platform shoe adds height and dimension to an outfit and makes wearing trousers that touch the floor much less of a risk in these typically wet months.

New York Fashion Week kicked off over the weekend, signalling the start of Fashion Month. While a huge swathe of the fashion population has spent the winter season in chunky boots or retro-look sneakers, and with some celebrities already placing bets of the ballet flats comeback for 2023, it's been left to Lily Collins to continue to fly the flag for high heels. It might feel early in the season for holiday dressing, but Jennifer Lopez doesn't live on anyone's schedule, so of course, she'd break out a festive 'fit before December's arrival. Over Thanksgiving weekend, the Hustlers actress was spotted out with her husband, Ben Affleck, at the Winter Garden Theatre in NYC, where they attended a performance of The Music Man.

If I told you that I found the perfect pair of high-street platform shoes, I would guess that Russell & Bromley wouldn't be the first place that springs to mind. It's no secret that Mary Janes have been having a moment for a while now. After formally entering the scene a couple of summers ago, the previously "dated" shoe style has quickly become one of the most coveted on the market. Blending a playful and "feminine" edge with a minimal and practical touch, fashion people have been styling these souped-up slippers with baggy jeans, cotton dresses and everything in between.

Ariana Grande is a woman of many talents, from hitting whistle tones to writing songs that literally anyone can bop to. *Plays "Positions" on repeat.* Another of her more underrated talents is walking—not to mention singing and dancing—in heels that any normal person would break their ankle(s) in. Her latest pair, however, is arguably the "7 Rings" singer's most impressive yet.

Last week, while filming an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Grande wore a pair of pink-and-white sparkly platforms that had to be at least seven inches tall. The heels, which were secured with ankle straps adorned with the brand GCDS's logo, first debuted at the brand's S/S 22 runway show in Milan. With them, she wore a custom seashell-inspired minidress that featured a separate strapless bra top and a corset waist, an oversized blazer and a choker with a pink teardrop diamond pendant. Until December 2019, according to Google Trends, there were next to no searches in the UK for the shoe brand Nodaleto. But then, an explosion: In January of 2020, Bella Hadid stepped out wearing a pair of knee-high, platform-soled boots from the French label, and suddenly the world tuned in and started investigating. The truth is fashion people had already clocked the emergence of this brand and its signature curved platforms. It was the first time in a long time that single-sole, dainty heels were being questioned as the most on-trend option, and you could say that this niche collection of Mary Janes and boots has paved the way for a full-blown stacked-shoe revival. Not only was the aesthetic entirely in check, but the agenda-setting "souliers" brand was created by Julia Toledano, the daughter of Sidney Toledano, the CEO of LVMH, so there was a deep understanding and knowledge baked into the idea from the start. "He asked me, 'Are you sure?' three times!" Julia Toledano told accessories site Monnier Frères. "The advice he gives me every day is to stay true to myself and give everything I can give. And not to want too much too soon. Step by step is the motto!"

Although Toledano was reportedly surprised by just how fervent the adoration was upon launch, the rate at which Nodaleto is finding its way into the coolest of wardrobes is astounding. Dua Lipa—queen of cult brands—has worn a pair of the chunky Mary Janes reminiscent of a "school" shoe style I definitely favoured in the '90s. And, of course, this sighting made everyone want to wear them too: "We noticed a 33% jump in searches for the footwear brand in less than 48 hours," fashion shopping app Lyst reported to me.

Maisie Williams, a bona fide fashion darling in her own right these days, wore pair to the Met Gala as the final gothic flourish to her all-black ensemble. In addition, fashion types at LFW—such as Lucy Williams—wore the instantly recognisable Bulla Babies strappy courts to events and for street style opportunities. 

Over on Instagram, the power of these platforms is unmissable. They make for the most impactful shoefies and show up as the avant-garde dresser's number one footwear choice right now. Directional enough to feel like a statement but clompy and practical enough to actually function in, these are the complete opposite of what's been trending in fashion circles for so long now, but they provide a welcome change, and the retail interest is clearly following the feed. "Since the start of the month, demand for the brand increased 74% with the Bulla Babies being the most wanted pair," says Lyst. "The Bulla Babies pumps are generating on average over 3.5K monthly pageviews." 

Susanna Lau, aka Susie Bubble, was one of the first high-profile fashion experts I saw supporting the brand. She wore the black Bulla Babies on multiple occasions during Paris Fashion Week a few years back. Combining them with everything from a retro shearling coat to fancy printed dresses, she proved the surprising versatility of such a statement pair of shoes. Then came a recommendation from Sarah Jane Bea, a super-stylish nurse who I follow closely on Instagram for her vintage-tinged aesthetic.

MATCHESFASHION.COM was the first boutique that I noticed stocking the brand a few seasons ago. "We were initially drawn to the Baby Mary Jane heel and the brand’s strong point of view. We loved Nodaleto’s edge and signature heel shape, and at that time, it was always difficult to find chunkier heel options. We were seeing more maximalist silhouettes doing well in RTW, and often it can be challenging knowing what to style these silhouettes back to, so we knew it would be an instant hit," says head of womenswear Cassie Smart. "As these shoes and shapes are hard to find, we knew our customer would engage exactly the same and enjoy the discovery of a new young brand. It’s been a great success, which I also think is down to the distinctive, timeless design. They can easily be dressed up or down—a true wardrobe staple.”

Now the impact of this chunky-shoe cult brand can clearly be seen across the board. This kind of exaggerated style has been omnipresent on TikTok, with smaller, more affordable labels creating their own rad platforms to appease a younger crowd. Start googling "Nodaleto," and you'll quickly be served the suggestion of "Nodaleto dupes," a telltale sign that there's a great deal of interest. 

In the world of designer footwear, stompy heels have been introduced by the likes of Christian Louboutin (pretty major development considering it is the name known for stiletto spikes), Miu Miu, Stella McCartney, Bottega Veneta and Versace. All are at extreme heights rather than the flatforms we've come to expect over the past few years. 

So where can you buy Nodaleto shoes for yourself? And which styles should you choose? Below, I've selected some of my favourite styles from the brand that are available to shop today as well as some second-hand, preloved options that look almost brand-new. Now your only decision is whether to go for the socks-and-shoes idea that many a Nodaleto fan is prone to do or whether to go bare-legged for summer.

While the majority of my wardrobe errs on the reserved side, my shoe collection is another story. In my opinion, glittery heels or bright strappy sandals can make any outfit infinitely cooler. And while I’ve owned just about every type of shoe going, there’s one I’ve long since sworn off…

Platforms were my footwear of choice throughout my teens. I wore them on uni nights out, to family get-togethers (heck, I even wore them to my part-time job at Faith). However, after landing a job in fashion, I found that my platforms, as much as I adored them, only hindered me on my clothing-return runs.

Gradually, they were simply phased out of my wardrobe repertoire. That is, until I saw the autumn/winter 2019 collections. Consult our trend report and you’ll find that platform shoes are very much on the agenda this season, with the likes of Dries Van Noten and Stella McCartney showcasing high-and-mighty footwear.

Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller, however, have remained loyal to the platform-heel trend throughout the years and are providing all the inspiration I need on the styling front. Alexa often wears hers with her off-duty wares (think vinyl trenches, straight-leg jeans and pinafore dresses), while Sienna ensures hers look fanciful with floral midi dresses and feather-trimmed separates.

In equally fabulous colours, you’ll find feather adorned sandals, courts and boots across the runways. They’re clearly being positioned as the go-to party shoes of the future.

If there’s a highlight colour to be recognized for A/W 19’s footwear lineup, it’s red. If you already bought into the trend two years ago, well done—whatever style or finish you invested in will still stand up for the rest of the year, if not longer.

Love your kicks but find your ankles get a bit chilly in the colder months? Have we got an answer for you! Sneaker-boots have been bubbling up in streetwear circles for some time (with styles even already reaching the likes of Zara), but it’s now that the look feels like it’s filtering into the mass market proper. Prada’s are, of course, the most avant-garde and highly likely to make appearances across Instagram ASAP.

Carrie Bradshaw would be proud. This season is all about wearing tights with your favourite strappy sandals. The look has already seized my Instagram feed, and I discovered that some hosiery brands do offer tights with extra grip on the soles for this very purpose. A ’90s shoe trend grown-up women will feel less allergic to: square-toed shoes, sandals and boots. These have been slowly but surely making their way back up to the top of the footwear tree. It all started with cult under-the-radar shoe brands but has now hit the mainstream market, with Bottega Veneta and Proenza Schouler showing them on the catwalk.

Fashion’s love affair with all things fluffy continues, but rather than shearling and other similar snuggly fabrics being used to line the inner layers of cosy winter boots, we’re seeing it transposed to the outside as a statement. We can’t guarantee these will be the most rain-proof shoes you’ll ever own, but they might just be the most fashion-forward.
