Unsurprisingly, we've never found the need to add a 'What to Wear to a Coronation' into our outfit guides, but if we had, these guest looks would certainly feature. As a day that will be immortalised through pictures forever, considering what to wear is just as monumental as attending itself. For attendees, colour was served up abound. As far as fashion-related royal protocols go, many of us are now acutely aware of the rule around wearing the same colour. It is important to not be dressed in the same hue as someone else more senior in the family. Meghan Markle explains in the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan that this rule was the reason behind her ultra-neutral wardrobe in the early stages of her duties—it was rare that the Queen would be seen in tones such as beige or camel, so it was a safe palette for her to play with.

This is why it's incredibly interesting to see not one, not two but three members of the royal family wearing a very precise shade of burgundy at last night's Together at Christmas carol service in Westminster Abbey. Actually, let's make that four because Princess Charlotte of Wales also had a coat to match. The Princess of Wales led the burgundy brigade with an elegant mid-length coat-dress believed to be from Eponine London—in silhouette and finish, it was incredibly similar to a cobalt-blue style she wore to COP26 last year, according to Kate Middleton fashion oracle What Kate Wore. True to form, she opted for matching oxblood suede pumps (Gianvito Rossi, naturally), an Aspinal of London clutch and even a pair of burgundy gloves. Even her Accessorize earrings featured drop gems in dark ruby tones. 

Not only was it interesting for Kate to opt for a red that was far away from a classic festive scarlet (and commit to it head to toe), but it was also unusual to see multiple family members in the same tone. Her sister, Pippa, chose a double-breasted merlot woolen coat from Karen Millen that featured a black waist belt and peplum. She combined it with brown leather boots and a mole-coloured clutch for a freer, more mix-'n'-match approach. Zara Phillips also followed suit with a burgundy overcoat paired with tights and black pumps, while Princess Charlotte looked adorable in an A-line coat that featured velvet pockets and collar. 

While this might not seem like the obvious hue to choose for a Christmas event, it is a very sophisticated option that works across the season and, as showcased, with multiple accessories in neutral tones. It is particularly suited to brunettes, and one could argue that the depth of a wine red is far richer than a brighter shade. In fact, some sources across the internet state that burgundy is quite a literal sign of wealth and power. So perhaps the next time you want to level up at a fancy event, burgundy may be the best option.

Kate Middleton's sister Pippa never needed an introduction again after that bridesmaid dress, but now there's yet another chic member of the family to keep an eye on. In September last year, Alizee Thevenet married Kate and Pippa's brother, James Middleton, and she has a cool, relaxed kind of style that I think you'll love. Thevenet is French, works as a finance director in London, and from the looks of her Instagram, happily co-parents James's five dogs. Talk about goals.

In our fantasy fashion world, we imagine Kate and Pippa Middleton and Meghan Markle all have a group chat where the three of them discuss what they might wear to a major event and maybe even conspire what to get the queen for her birthday. We like to assume, in some way, that they’re just like us.

But while there’s no real proof such a group chat exists, we do have a few cues from their outfits that confirm they clearly share some style knowledge between each other (maybe it's more formal, via beautifully written letters on royal headed paper). And we can specifically call to mind four examples.

Meghan, Kate, and Pippa all have a penchant for classic, luxury shoes. Manolo, Aquazzura, Gianvito Rossi—they all own them. But we have a feeling that somewhere in their hypothetical text exchange the topic of best heels arose and Jimmy Choos came out on top. Meghan wore a pair during a visit to Ireland in March.

The appeal of affordable maternity clothing isn't lost on Pippa Middleton. We all know A-list sisters love a classic high street purchase as much as the next person. The expectant, first-time mother stepped out today in a dress from Séraphine that was printed and clinched slightly above her waist. This neat maternity style is simple enough to wear on repeat throughout her pregnancy, but what's more is that it was recently reduced from £65 to £39.

As other parents-to-be might agree, shopping for maternity clothes you're only going to wear for nine (ish) months is kind of a pain. And that's why we love seeing such a stylish example on Middleton that also doesn't break the bank, making it a bit easier to wear for a short period of time or pass along to a friend after you're done with it. Perhaps she picked up a tip from Kate: Séraphine is one of the go-to British brands each time the Duchess of Cambridge has been pregnant.

Pippa Middleton is currently on her honeymoon in Australia—if you have an internet connection, there's no doubt you'll have seen the pictures of her marrying James Matthews in an exquisite Giles gown. Just like her sister, Pippa has the ability to cause a shopping frenzy, and the outfit she wore to board a flight at Darwin International Airport yesterday has already sold out.

Pippa wore a simple outfit, pairing cropped skinny blue jeans with a white paisley blouse by Orla Kiely with a ruffled collar and cuffs. The date is set: Pippa Middleton will marry James Matthews on Saturday, May 20. Which brand will she choose to wear on the big day? Thanks to paparazzi photos of Giles Deacon at Middleton's home, the designer is certainly a strong possibility. It looks like Pippa Middleton has something new to add to her résumé. As Harper's Bazaar pointed out, Kate's sister just partnered with designer Tabitha Webb to create a limited-edition dress and scarf for the British Heart Foundation. "As an ambassador for the British Heart Foundation, I wanted to do something different and exciting on behalf of this inspiring charity," Pippa said. "I'm really looking forward to taking part in the London to Brighton Bike Ride [on June 21] this month and am thrilled I was able to collaborate with Tabitha on this project to help raise additional funds and awareness for the charity." So sweet.
