Party season is almost upon us, and with my diary already filled with work events, festive dinners and Christmas parties, planning my outfits is my top priority.

However, as the saying goes, it's about quality not quantity. So, when I do go out or attend something fancy, I go all out. This is why I consider rental fashion to be a revelation. Instead of hastily buying a dress that I like well enough, I've become an advocate for renting something that I love instead. Most of my rentals have been pieces I'd dream of owning but don't have the budget to do so. Renting as afforded me the chance to get my hands on that cult 16Arlington dress I've been thinking out for months, or a Monique L'Huillier cape that feels like the closest thing to an angelic uniform, with the caveat of it being borrowed. 

Of course, there are sustainable benefits to this, too. I won't pretend to be an expert on the subject, but we know that unfathomable amounts of clothing end up in landfill every year (every day even!), while the sheer process of making clothes is negatively impacting our environment. Renting might not be a save-all solution, but it presents a considered alternative to needless spending and consumption. Did you know partywear is one of the items most likely to end up in the trash? Namely because we—as a collective—tend to consume partywear more frivolously and, let's face it, it doesn't have the same overall wearability as a neutral jumper or a pair of classic jeans. If sequins, however, are a part of your daily uniform, more power to you!

We’re officially entering peak party season, and with invitations coming at you from all angles, balancing your December calendar can at times feel like a fine art. Whilst a brimming diary can take its toll, it’s not without its delights, and I wouldn’t be a fashion writer if I didn’t count event-season styling as one of the greatest things about this time of year. This season, we’ve been treated to a wealth of party-styling inspiration. With influencers donning fluffy faux feathers and rosettes across our For You pages and celebrities styling velvet and shimmering accents to every event, I'm newly brimming with ideas and eager to start planning outfits. To my delight, I'm very excited to report that sparkle is back on the agenda. Specifically, it's the sequin skirt that I'm most interested in shimmying into for all my festive occasions, and luckily for me, high-street and designer brands alike have plenty of perfect party options.

You could argue that sequin skirts have felt "dated" for the past few seasons, replaced instead with embellished jeans and elegant dresses. However, thanks to a few clever styling tweaks, they feel fresh again. Tonight is the night—the Fashion Awards 2023 is well underway in a rainy London but, thankfully, that hasn't deterred attendees from 1) showing up and 2) pulling out all the stops with their outfits. What struck me most is just how prevalent the silver sequin trend is this season, too. Of course, you can always opt for small silver sequins for a party look that will never go out of style but, to really hone Alexa Chung's look, discs are what to look out for.

Emma Watson is one of my favourite celebrities to look to for polished and wearable styling inspiration. Unfortunately for me though, she isn’t one of those celebrities who we catch sight of very often, so on a rare occasion when she is spotted, you know she has my attention. And to my delight, last night was one of those happy occasions. Attending the premiere of We Dare to Dream in London, Watson joined Malala Yousafzai and director Waad Al-Kateab on the red carpet, styling an unexpected partywear look I plan to copy this event season.

On the late-November evening, Watson reached for a slim-cut, single-breasted suit set, which she paired with silver sparkly heels and a festive red lip. Though we love Watson for her classic, polished style, her looks are often dressed up with a subtle playful addition. In the past, she's opted for a dramatic collar or broad-shouldered jacket, but on this occasion, the actress let her strappy bralette peek out beneath her blazer for a stylish twist that exudes understated glamour.

Styling the exposed-lingerie trend in a way that not only feels wearable but also classy, Watson chose a bralette with delicate strap details. This thoughtful choice meant that the look remained clean and polished rather than cluttered, and the bra wasn't forced to compete with the crystal embellishment on the shoulder of her blazer. Her monochrome styling added to the sleek feel, which she kept relaxed by styling her hair in a loose ponytail and opting for minimal makeup, bar her red lip.

We're fast approaching that time of year again. You're dusting off the decorations, you've started writing your gift list (for others but also for yourself) and the Quality Street tin has officially become part of your coffee table décor. It is, of course, party season. As fashion editors, we adore this time of year because it's an excuse to dress up, but we know that for others, this very thing can be a little overwhelming. A diary brimming with events—the work Christmas party, hosting friends for dinner, the annual big family gathering on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, plus any other occasions you might have planned—can make December feel like a slew of soirées where sequins and satin are almost mandatory. Year after year at Who What Wear UK, we're asked the same questions: "How can I stand out? Where can I find pieces that I can also wear outside of festive events?" And, the one we get the most: "How can I avoid spending a fortune?" 

One site I often recommend, and regularly turn to myself, is YOOX. Whilst I'm the first to admit that I'm not so great at nailing casual attire (blue jeans just aren't my thing, sorry!), dressing up is my forte. Especially when this includes dresses, which if you've scrolled for just a minute on the Who What Wear UK site, you'll already know are my uniform. This being said, I can do trousers and skirts just as long as I can zhuzh them up with a spot of sparkle, a hint of metallic and a rhinestone or two. 

In light of this, I've put together four failsafe party looks that are head-to-toe from YOOX. Hope you enjoy my magpie moment as much as me! 

Style Notes: In case you somehow missed it, red is having a major moment. Shoes, bags, cardigans or dresses—influencers, editors and celebrities are all seeing red this season. As a big lover of colour, there was no question of my embracing this trend, and the second I saw this Rosie Assoulin number I knew it was for me. The voluminous sleeves, plunging neckline and cinched-in waist with small cutouts suit my hourglass figure, and I love the pleat detail. Made with crepe, this dress is ideal to wear throughout most of the year (though perhaps a little too warm for high summer), so could easily be worn again for a spring or autumn wedding. For the festive period though, I've accessorised it with silver, pairing it with this classic Paco Rabanne bag—which is not only chainmail but also adorned with rhinestones—and these Roger Vivier courts. The diamante-encrusted bow detail on the toe makes me feel like a Christmas present, one that I would gift to myself. 

Style Notes: If the Carrie Bradshaw reference isn't obvious here, let me spell it out. The Sex and the City protagonist was responsible for the popularisation of the baguette bag, which this Furla style is reminiscent of. She was also a huge lover of A-line midi skirts, and this Blumarine one with its lace top layer and floral appliqué detail gives the overtly feminine essence that Bradshaw's iconic style was all about. To make it more festive, I styled the look with these rhinestone butterfly earrings and this faux-fur collar cardigan, making it winter-friendly and giving it a sense of Y2K, which is when the show was at its peak. If Bradshaw was going to a fabulous Christmas party in 2023, this is what she'd be wearing. 

Style Notes: The Little Black Dress may be a timeless wardrobe staple, but this interpretation feels fresh. Not only does it have pops of red, which as mentioned, is this season's hottest colour, but I've also paired it with one of the most sought-after shoe designs of the year; the Loewe rose-heel pump. It's undeniable that red roses are both sexy and sophisticated, as is the LBD. When I think of which designers harness this same sleekness (and are known for their rose appliqué details), Dolce & Gabbana immediately comes to mind. This dress is so chic and so classic that it will never date. Just be sure to snap it up before one of the Kardashians hear about it…

Style Notes: If I'm going to do trousers, you best believe they're going to make a statement. These Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini tiger-print pants are so much fun, and whilst I would wear them throughout the year, there's no question of them feeling festive when styled with this gold, cropped jacket and some red sandals. The rhinestones on the Rene Caovilla heels give the look that added sparkle, and the gold laminated leather bag by Roger Vivier with embellished stones ties the look together. This outfit is perfect for dinner and drinks with (my coolest) friends.
