If you were to ask any beauty editor or nail fanatic for their ultimate nail combo, I have no doubt they would mention two of OPI's nail colours: Bubble Bath and Funny Bunny. Those acquainted with the cult nail polishes will know that the former is the perfect sheer pink polish, and the latter is a perfect milky sheer white nail polish. But together? They're even better. It's a sheer nail colour, with a milky undertone and a hint of pink that instantly brightens the nails. So how does it fare? I tried the nail polish to see how it compares to the layering combo below.

One Coat of OPI'm A Funny Bunny

Here's one coat of OPI'm A Bubble Bunny. It's very sheer on the first coat, and I recommend applying a thin layer of it first with minimal product on the brush to avoid streaking.

And here it is with two coats. I applied a little more on the second coat for more opacity. I found "floating" the brush over the nails worked well for the second coat, sweeping the brush 1-2 times over the nail tops. This helped the polish apply evenly with minimal streaking. The result is a pretty pink milky hue that still has some sheerness to it.

OPI'm A Funny Bunny vs Funny Bunny and Bubble Bath

Here is my other hand, painted with the classic combo: two coats of Funny Bunny and one coat of Bubble Bath on top. To be honest, I find that when layering the two nail polish formulas, it can sometimes end up streaky. By comparison, the OPI'm a Bubble Bunny shade is far smoother. The classic combo leans more pink, IMO, whilst the new OPI'm A Bubble Bunny shade leans more milky—and I actually prefer it.

The Verdict

OPI has really answered our prayers with this shade. Not only is it much easier to apply to achieve a milky pink mani, but eliminating the need to layer up the polishes also saves so much time. Whilst I can't speak for the gel formulas, I've found that OPI'm A Bubble Bunny is far less streaky than Bubble Bath and Funny Bunny. The shade is definitely more milky-lilac-leaning than the two OG shades (which leans more pink) but I'm totally obsessed with the shade.

As a beauty editor who writes about new nail trends almost every week, it's safe to say that I'm always looking at people's nails (it's probably my favourite way to pass the time on the tube). And as winter nail trends go, I never fail to see dark burgundy nails and brown manicures doing the rounds at this time of year. The colour seems to shape-shift depending on the lighting. It looks more aubergine during daylight, and then inky-black come evening. It's ultra-glossy and remains one of OPI's best-selling nail colours, even 20 years after its initial launch.

As a beauty editor, I basically study OPI nail colours—they're like my version of the periodic table. From Funny Bunny to Bubble Bath, I can easily spot them from a mile away, and there are so many timeless nail shades I adore from the nail brand. But when I want to feel my most sophisticated and put together, there is one OPI deep red nail colour that I reach for time and time again, and that's Malaga Wine.

Inspired by the deep red wine from Málaga, Spain, OPI Malaga Wine is rich, full-bodied wine-red that suits everyone. It leans on the darker side of red with a slight ruby undertone, making it a chic dark nail colour for autumn manicures and winter nails, or as a moody evening mani. Above, I'm wearing two coats of Malaga Wine (sealed with OPI Infinite Shine Top Coat) and it never fails to deliver a rich and glossy look. It's by far one of my favourite reds from OPI. It reads a little more pink in the bottle, but on the nails, it's a full-bodied red. It comes in both the classic Nail Lacquer, as well as the Infinite Shine formula, which is designed to be longer-lasting and even glossier while lasting up to 11 days. Of course, you can also request the shade in salon if you're having a gel manicure.

However, next on my list to try are the OPI Press On Nails in the Malaga Wine hue, which are a great alternative to gel nails and other types of manicures. If you're looking for a classy and timeless red that suits any occasion, Malaga Wine is a failsafe choice.

When it comes to nail polish, sheer nail colours are my thing. Nail trends may come and go, but a sheer white nail polish has become my default manicure. The reason being? It looks timeless, chic and brightens your hands without being stark as opaque white nail polish. Like sheer pink nails, it transcends trends, and when I clock someone with a milky manicure, I instantly know they're chic. IMO, there's no classic nail colour you can wear.

Given my obsession with them, I've spent a lot of time researching and testing some of the best sheer white nail polishes. Essie's Allure Nail Polish is one of my regular go-tos when I'm craving a sheer white manicure. It's very sheer, and more of a bone colour that is much softer compared to the brightness of Funny Bunny. Below, I'm wearing two thin coats paired with Essie Gel Couture Top Coat (which genuinely makes my nail polish last for over a week), and it gives me natural-looking nails that look neat and manicured.

3. Manucurist Active Bright

Looking at Mateja Novakovic's understated manicure with the Manucurist Active Bright (I'm also a big fan of Active Smooth) hue has 100% convinced me to buy it. It's a sheer white with subtle flecks of shimmer that give the nails a luminous glow. You can layer it up for more coverage, but it's a speedy way to make your nails look neat if you only wear one coat. It's also a nail strengthener, too, so it helps your nails grow long and strong as you wear it.

I audibly gasped when I saw this stunning manicure by Julia Diogo, and I just had to find out the shade. It turns out it's Bio Sculpture's Seafoam, a cloudy, milky white that I'm desperate to try next. What's great is that Bio Sculpture offers it in gel form through salons, but you can also pick up the nail polish version in the exact shade if you're painting your nails at home.

6. Westmoreland Cosmetics Vanilla Gloss 1

Ever since I heard that manicurist Harriet Westmoreland was launching her own range, Westmoreland Cosmetics, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. She's perfected the milky manicure, and her Vanilla Gloss collection features this stunning shade (No.1), which may be one of the best sheer white nail colours I've ever seen. It comes in both Glass Gel and Glass Polish form, too.

7. Bio Sculpture French Blanc

Another Bio Sculpture nail colour I've fallen for is French Blanc—and isn't it the dreamiest milkshade shade you've ever seen? This natural off-white shade is like a tulle manicure, cloaking the nails in a sheer veil while making the nail plate look healthy and glossy. I'm obsessed.

I've always struggled to grow my nails. It seems no matter what I do, my nails are destined to break and peel, making it nearly impossible to grow my nails. I'm always looking for nail growth serums and cuticle oils that can strengthen my nails and enhance my hands. And the very best one I've tried so far is, without a shadow of a doubt, OPI's Repair Mode Nail Serum (£29). How It Works

OPI's Repair Mode contains a Ulti-Plex technology, which works to repair the bonds inside the nail plate. Think of it as the nail version of Olaplex, helping to strengthen your nails from the inside out. It comes in a serum delivery serum, which you need to apply to bare nails twice a day for six days. It sinks in immediately, so there's no hanging around waiting for anything to dry, and you can also wear it underneath polish. You just have to apply two coats and wait 10 minutes before following up with your usual nail polish or gel polish.

You do need to apply it to bare nails, so for the first six days, it's best not to wear anything on your nails if you can. That being said, you can apply it to regrowth areas as your polish grows out. I applied mine in the morning and just before bed, then after a week, I used my trusty Dior Base Vernis Base Coat (also amazing, BTW) to create a protective layer on my nails if I didn't follow up with nail polish.

Before

These are my nails about three months ago. Tried as I might, I couldn't get them to grow past my fingertips as they were thin and peeling and prone to breaking—even when I was wearing nail polish.

After

This is about two months after using OPI Repair Mode, and as you can see, my nails are so much longer. They feel thicker, and they're less prone to breaking or peeling now. Because they are so much thicker and stronger, the whites of my nails look brighter overall, too. I maintain my results by applying a couple of coats of Repair Mode in between my nail polish manicures, which I will remove every 7-10 days.

Here I'm wearing OPI Funny Bunny and Baby, Take A Vow, followed by two coats of Essie Gel Couture Top Coat. Honestly, my nails have never looked better or stronger. They're long enough now for me to file into an oval or almond nail shape, and the longer length has helped to elongate my fingers, too.

The Verdict

In case you haven't already guessed, I'm totally sold on this nail growth serum. It's so convenient to use. It sinks in quickly and with no waiting around for it to dry. Yes, you'll need to keep your nails bare for the first week or so, but it's so easy to fit into your routine, and it's a great way to strengthen nails post gel manicures or if you want to grow your nails. At £29, it's one of the most expensive nail serums I've tested, but trust me, this really works. There's a reason why this won a Who What Wear Next in Beauty Award.

I put my theory to the test below, applying two thin coats of Funny Bunny, and two thin coats of the aptly named Baby, Take A Vow on top—it's the perfect bridal pink. And I have to say, this might be a very close match if you want to replicate this look on your own nails. I used OPI's nail polishes for my manicure, but you can also request these two shades in the salon if you want gel nails. That being said, if you want a gel nails alternative, then I swear by Essie's Gel Couture Top Coat, a nail polish top coat that applies and looks like gel, but keeps my nail polish chip-free for between 7 and 10 days.

We're used to seeing Hailey wear her iconic doughnut glazed nails, but this time around, she's opted for a sheer, milky French tip manicure with a chrome finish—and it was done using a signature OPI nail colour that you can use at home or ask for in the salon.

That being said, I have incredibly weak nails, so my salon appointments are few and far between. Instead, the polish creates a plumping effect and adds serious shine, while also adding extra protection to your nail polish to help it last longer. Yep, it really does tick all the boxes. The best bit? You can just remove it like regular nail polish, meaning it's easy to switch up your nail shade whenever you want. If I don't feel like wearing a colour, I actually just wear this top coat on its own, as I love the way that it makes my nails look.

The Application

One thing I struggle with when doing my nails at home is the application itself. I feel like my nail polish can sometimes look streaky or clumpy, but I have never had this issue with the OPI Infinite Shine Top Coat. The wider brush makes applying this polish quick and easy, and it deposits an even amount so you don't have to worry about clumps or streaks. Just be sure to let your nail colour dry before applying the top coat so that they don't interfere with one another.

The Verdict

As you can see, this top coat really doesn't disappoint. In my opinion, it totally lives up to the name, delivering a salon-worthy, gel-like shine that I didn't think I could ever achieve at home. Plus, it makes my manicure last so much longer and stops my polish from fading or chipping throughout the week. If, like me, you like to do your nails at home, this is a must-have product. Yes, it adds an extra step into your routine, but it takes seconds to apply and the results are worth it.

For Este, I was super heavy handed so this version was a bit more on the pigmented side."

Personally, I love this milky pink manicure combined with the almond nail shape and will be getting hold of the OPI nail colour to recreate this look at home. My Review of the OPI Put It In Neutral Nail Polish

These are my nails after applying two coats of OPI's Put It In Neutral. As you can see, it's quite pink on me, and this is what originally sold me on this nail polish. I've never suited those true nude shades, and prefer something with a slight hint of colour, and to me this is the perfect mix.

Not only that, but I love how glossy and healthy it makes my nails look whenever I wear it. It has a naturally shiny finish that makes my mani look salon-worthy (if I do say so myself). Of course, it's not going to last you as long as a gel mani would, but I've been wearing the nail polish for almost a week now and it looks pretty much the same as when I first applied it. Consider me impressed.

It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that I love a neutral manicure.

Not only do they look incredibly classy, but they're also extremely versatile, working well in any season and with any outfit. I’ve tried out a lot of neutral nail polishes at the salon over the years, but since discovering OPI’s Nail Lacquer in Bare My Soul (£16), I’ve never looked back. Bare My Soul is a translucent pinky-nude that suits all skin tones. "This colour is probably older than I am and an icon for sure. This is the shade for A/W and if you haven’t tried it then what are you waiting for?"

The deep black cherry hue was born from Chanel's A/W 94 show when makeup artist Heidi Morawetz and Chanel's then director of makeup Dominique Moncourtois mixed a red and black pigments just days before the show to paint the model's hands, and it was an instant hit on the runway. When Chanel decided to launch the shade (which was then name Vamp) it was so popular that people were queuing outside stores to get a bottle the day it launch. The brand's range of nail colours are inspired by the very enamel colours you'll find among Hermès goods . So if you're pining for a Birkin or a Kelly, Hermès' Nail Enamels may help to tide you over for the time being. The most iconic shade for Shelton is Orange Boîte. "It’s a colour most would describe as the “Hermes orange” and they aren’t wrong. I love this shade so much because it looks great on everyone." Whenever I ask any nail tech or salon about their most requested and most loved nail colour shades, OPI Funny Bunny is always, always mentioned. "This shade is so versatile and I love applying a couple of layers of this as it creates the perfect milky nail look." Ask any nail tech about their favourite red colour, and Big Apple Red is bound to be mentioned. "It's one of my favourite reds to date," says Shelton. "I always reach for this in summer. It’s beautiful and a classic colour that can really make a statement." Many people are loyal to this true neutral red (the perfect balance of warm and cool undertones) which looks just as good on all skin tones, chic short nails as it does on longer lengths, and it's also an elite pedicure colour year-round. It rose to fame in the 2000s when it launched as part of OPI's New York collection and was so popular that it became a permanent colour in the brand's core collection. Another of Rae's favourites? "‘Big Apple Red," she says. "I can spot this shade a mile away, the most perfect red, and it wouldn’t be an OPI favourite list if this wasn’t included," she says. "With that in mind I have recently shared a baby blue by Chanel in shade Muse and that has also been one of my go-tos," she adds. "It flatters the skin and is a great alternative for those who aren’t into strikingly bold colours. Although this is only available in lacquer, it leaves a beautiful gel-like finish."

"We’re never going to get away from neutrals," says Shelton. "Whether it’s the sheer nudes to the fully pigmented skin tone nudes, they’re here to stay. I think there’s a current obsession around being effortlessly chic that we’re now reverting back to shorter, more natural looks," she notes. "This isn’t just with nails mind you. It’s with fashion and makeup also. Less is more and I really like that." "I feel incomplete if I’m not wearing French on my toes," she says. "It can look beautiful on hands too, of course, but it can make your feet just look super pretty!" I'll be the first to admit that normally over the autumn and winter, with my feet tucked away in thick socks and winter boots, I become lax with my pedicure appointments. But this year—with or without sandal-ready weather—I have become a regular in my local salon. There really is nothing so satisfying as the feeling of leaving a pedicure appointment at any time of the year with smooth, soft feet, perfectly shaped nails, tidy cuticles, and a pop of colour on your toes

Naturally, for an indecisive person like me, the hardest part of the experience is settling on a pedicure colour. I almost always opt for nail art for my manicures, but when it comes to my toes I find myself torn between choosing for something bright and fun which stands out from my neutral-toned outfits, or something sheer and neutral (think OPI Bubble Bath or Funny Bunny) that fits in with them. What's more, pedicure colours always last a lot longer than manicure colours, so once I've committed to a colour I'm stuck with it for a few weeks...

"Manicurists and pedicurists are always the first people to know what colours are set to trend for the year ahead," says nail technician and trend expert Ashleigh Bamber. "Once we've noticed a couple of people asking for a particular shade, we can pretty much guarantee that it's going to be popular that season," she adds.

You can always count on an expert to fill you in on not only what colours will suit your skin tone, but what's trending and in demand in salons right now—and according to Bamber and professional pedicurist Milly Mason, these colours are tipped to be the best pedicure colours for 2025 and beyond.

1. Bright Reds

"Bright reds are one of the most-requested pedicure colours," says Mason. "Reds have either an orange or a blue undertone so I will always choose a shade that matches my client's skin tone." This is an important thing to consider—if you've ever worn a red polish and thought that the colour somehow looked jarring on your skin, you probably opted for the wrong hue. Typically, reds with orange hues look good on skin with warm, olive undertones, whereas a blue-toned red will suit fair, cool-toned skin.

2. French Tips

"Like French tip manicures, French tip pedicures have become increasingly popular over the past few years," Mason tells me. "My clients often like to mix things up with a colourful French manicure or pastel tip." As well as pastel shades like baby pink, sky blue, and mint green, according to Mason, red tips are also popular. "But classic white French tips are a failsafe options because they work for all skin tones," she adds.

3. Sheer Nudes

"Sheer nudes are some of my most popular pedicure colours all year round," says Mason. "Most people opt for a shade a few shades darker or lighter than their natural skin colour so it stands out but doesn't look super obvious." It makes sense that this colour type is so popular—nude shades will work for all outfits, don't make too much of a statement, and don't look super obvious as they grow out. 4. Pale Pinks

"Bubble Bath by OPI is a light candy pink which trends every year," explains Mason. "My clients will often wear this shade on rotation." Similarly to more neutral nude shades, pale pink is a wearable colour which doesn't stand out too much, but still looks clean and polished.

5. Clear Shine

Clear nails might seem understated and boring, but it does leave toes looking clean and healthy, and who doesn't want that? "In the winter I tend to do more naked pedicures like this, with a clear clean shine," says Mason. "At this time of year I keep nails as short as possible, as closed toe footwear can cause trauma to to the nail if the nail is too long," she adds.

If you try this at home, it's important not to neglect the key elements of a pedicure since your natural nails will be on show. "Start with a warm soapy foot bath, followed by a gentle rasp to safely remove the dead skin," advises Mason. "Do not over-file the dead skin, if over-filed it can grow back twice as thick."

6. Neutral Browns

Browns are another popular colour choice and one I often go for as they work well with my neutral-coloured wardrobe. Again, this is a safe option which works for everyone and any shoe choice—especially if you're indecisive and don't want to end up hating a bright, stand-out colour. And equally, if you favour a brightly coloured shoe, a neutral brown pedi lets the shoe do the talking...

7. Fresh White

"A fresh, crisp white is always popular and especially with clients who are going away somewhere hot," says Bamber. "It looks great in the summer, and because white is so clean and neutral, it will go with any shoe colour or outfit choice."

Bamber often recommends baby blue as an alternative to white. "When clients want something bright and fresh but still want to incorporate colour, a pale blue is a popular option," she says. "It's not too distracting, but it looks really clean and chic."

"I've noticed that a lot of my clients who favour subtle and neutral nail designs like to express their creativity via their pedicure colour choices instead," says Bamber. "It's always the people who stick to the same classic nude manicure who surprise me by asking for a bright neon on their toes." One thing is for certain; 2023 is going to be full of surprises. "Nail art is such a fun method of self-expression but trends move fast these days,” says Millie Horton, nail artist and founder of Doll Parts. "I think the vibe for nail art this year is reimagining the classics and putting your own spin on trending designs. It’s much more fun creating whatever you like now that the days of copy-and-paste designs are over.”

Ahead, we’ve rounded up what are predicted to be 2023’s biggest nail art trends. And trust us: whether you’re a salon regular or always up for some DIY, there’s something for everyone.

1. Chunky Glitter

"With the exception of chrome and cat-eye polish, glitter nails have been out of the limelight for a while,” says Horton. "I think we’ve still got a way to go before full-cover glitter nails are back, but we’re going to see a lot of cool encapsulated glitter shapes this year.” The key to nailing this trend is to opt for chunky glitters, and avoid fine shimmers. Horton recommends layering the glitter underneath your top coat or clear builder gel for the best finish.

2. Minimal Monochrome

While the nail art trends of yesteryear involved mixing and matching just about as many patterns and colours as it was possible to, both Horton and nail artist Rose Tucker agree that things are getting a little more minimalistic in 2023. "A sheer, natural base with a one-colour design is the way to go for a simple yet effective look this year,” says Horton. "Pick one colour, grab your paintbrush and keep it minimal.”

As for the colours to use, Tucker believes that dark, high-gloss shades will be trending this year. "It ties in really well with the gothic glamour we’ve been seeing and the nods to the 90’s,” she adds.

3. 3D Details

The next frontier of nail art? A third dimension. The natural evolution beyond experimenting with shape and colour is to take things 3D. "Body chains, crystals, oversized jewellery pieces, surrealist shaping—we’ve seen it all and I think we can expect to see more on your manis too,” says Tucker. "There’s lots of ways you can add 3D details to your nails whether it be with stick ons or structured gel and with maximalism in mind; more is more!”

Creating a 3D effect with structured gel is one of the easiest ways to experiment with this trend. "Clear hard gel is applied to build tiny blobs that resemble water droplets,” explains Horton. "You can create big blobs, tiny droplets, layer on top of designs or even paint other 3D shapes for a fun sculptural feel.”

4. Chrome Accents

"Silver chrome is having a huge moment in nail art,” says Horton. "The release of chrome paints last year revolutionised application, although chrome powder is still a firm favourite of many nail techs. Layer on top of your aura nails for a super cool alien vibe.” It’s very clear that the silver chrome trend isn’t going anywhere, and Tucker agrees. "Chrome was the biggest nail trend of 2022 and although it’s here to stay in 2023, it’s getting a glow up,” she adds. "We’ll see a bolder alternative to the ‘glazed donut’ style. Think mirror finishes, lots of bright, jewel tones and even some metallic textures.”

5. Aura Nails

Aura nails? Watercolour mani? Gradient effect? Whatever you call it, the trend (which involves blending together two or more shades) is set to be huge in 2023.  Although it’s possible to achieve this effect using sponges or blooming gel, it’s best created using an airbrush, so Horton advises asking your nail artist to create this one.

6. 00's French

Noughties fashion is back and with it the classic pink and white French manicure. "I’m anticipating a shift in nail length and shape with this design from the current short and squoval to long and square,” says Tucker. "But we want to keep that deep smile line we’ve been seeing recently—it’s a perfect way to freshen up a nostalgic set.”

"A great way to master the French is to map it out on each nail before going all in,” she adds. "Mark where you want your tip to begin on each nail so that they're all uniform, go in and fill them, and then you can tidy up any excess polish with a brush or cotton bud soaked in remover/acetone.”

We’ve all been there: You saw some cute nail art designs on Pinterest or Instagram, perhaps you even found a handy tutorial and stocked up on some new products. But now you’re two hours into attempting your own at-home manicure, struggling to get an even coat, and beginning to realise why so many people choose to leave it to the professionals…

The thing is, attempting to DIY your own manicure always sounds like a good idea (and when you’re sat in the salon chair, your manicurist probably makes it look effortless), but there’s a lot more that goes into achieving those salon-perfect results than meets the eye.

As a self-confessed nail-art obsessive, I’ve spent many hours sitting in salon chairs picking the brains of professional manicurists and nail technicians. Enough time to have picked up on the go-to mistakes that most people make (myself included!), plus the tips and techniques to help remedy them. Whether you struggle to get a smooth coat of colour or your cuticles always end up looking shredded, taking some advice from professionals can make all the difference.

1. Not Prepping Your Nails

Prepping your nails probably isn’t something you think about doing first (and we mean more than just applying a base coat). But just as it’s important to cleanse your skin before applying makeup, it’s vital to ensure your nails are totally clean. "Make sure you’re always dehydrating the nail plate with a dehydrator or acetone before you apply your polish,” explains nail technician Ashleigh Bamber. "If you skip this step, the oils, dust, and dirt on your nails will stop the gel from sticking to your nails, and you’ll find your polish won’t last as long as it should.”

2. Destroying Your Cuticles

A tidy cuticle really is key to achieving a flawless manicure, but while it can be all too tempting to pick up the nippers and attempt to replicate the techniques you’ve seen in-salon, it’s probably best to leave anything that requires tools to the professionals. "Nail prep needs to be done with real care and all too often I see clients absolutely obliterating what they thought was dead skin, only to find it wasn’t and they’re left bleeding,” says nail artist Rose Tucker. "To save yourself the pain and the risk of infection, only ever remove hangnails from your skin, and gently use a cuticle pusher on your nail plate to loosen dead skin and cells.” Tucker also recommends using cuticle softeners to prevent buildup and help the pusher do the hard work.

3. Doing Thick Coats

Although it’s time-consuming, it pays off to apply your polish in multiple thin layers, rather than one thick one. "Less really is more when it comes to your at-home nail session, so whether you’re working with regular or gel polish, each coat should be super thin,” says Bamber. In fact, she warns this can dramatically shorten the lifespan of your manicure. "Using thick coats will only leave you with a gloopy, uncured (or not dry) manicure and even if it sets you may find it peels off in a few days,” she adds.

4. Not Capping

You’ve probably never heard of capping before, but this pro-approved technique is the ultimate hack to stopping your nail polish from chipping. "Capping is a trick we use to make sure the product is sealed and resistant to chips,” explains Tucker. "All you need to do is—before your hand goes in the lamp and whilst the rest of your polish is still wet—lightly drag the tip of your brush along the tip of your nail.” This technique also works with regular nail polish. "You don’t want a lot of product on the brush here as you don’t want to see a ridge so just use what’s left on your brush and paint thinly,” she advises.

5. Not Tidying Up

If you feel like your DIY manicures never look as perfect as your professional ones, listen up. According to both Bamber and Tucker, not tidying up is the number one mistake they spot among clients who have attempted an at-home manicure. "It’s also one of the easiest to avoid, but believe it or not it still happens,” says Bamber. "Leaving specks of polish on the surrounding areas of your nails will make them look messy and if you’re using gel, will most likely make them lift."

When applying polish to your nails, Bamber recommends doing a single swipe down the centre of your nail to start, followed by a swipe on either side (overlapping if needed) and avoiding getting too close to the edge of your nails. "It’s always better to leave a tiny gap than to get polish on your skin,” she says. "You could even use a fine brush to go around the cuticle and side walls if you struggle with this,” she adds. And if you do get polish on your skin? "Always make sure to clean your nails up with nail polish remover on a cotton bud as quickly as possible.”

In addition, Tucker advises that overexposing gel and polish to skin can cause skin reactions. "I learned this the hard way and now live with the irony of being a nail artist who’s allergic to gel polish,” she says. "It’s usually only a problem if product is left uncured on the skin as the compound changes when it cures in the lamp, so be super careful with your application and if you do get any on your skin, wipe it off immediately.”

6. Not Following Aftercare

"If there’s one step that you never skip when doing your nails at home, then let this be the one,” says Bamber. "Oiling your cuticles daily is hands down the easiest and most effective way to keep your at-home mani looking fresh and stop it from lifting and peeling.” Tucker agrees. "Good aftercare can be the difference between a five day manicure and a three week one,” she says.

"You still want to look after your nails once your manicure is complete because although gel and polish are sturdy, they’re not bulletproof.” It also helps to try and avoid subjecting your nails to anything too intensive in the 24 hours following your manicure. "I always tell my clients to avoid excessive heat (like saunas and hot baths) for the next couple of days,” says Tucker. "And even with gel polish, you should limit excessive contact with water for at least two hours after.”

7. Picking Off Your Polish

While application and aftercare are key, don’t ruin your hard work with a rushed removal. "Picking off your gel polish or acrylics is one of the most damaging things you can do to your nails,” says Tucker. "Yes, it’s tempting when your gels are clinging on for dear life in the shower, but the damage of improper removal can take months to repair and gets harder to correct each time.” Instead, she advises investing in a good soak-off kit. "They’re reusable, cheap, easy to use, and you can buy them pretty much anywhere these days,” she adds.

"I think this fall will bring the need for change, and this may be expressed in the switch from a super-shiny manicure to a matte effect," predicts Jin Soon Choi, a New York–based expert nail artist and founder of Jinsoon.

Similarly, Nails of LA founder and celebrity nail artist, Brittney Boyce, anticipates seeing a rise in the multicolour matte manicure. "This is a really fun and easy way to DIY nail art at home," says Boyce. "It's especially great for people who can't make up their minds on just one nail color."

3. Mismatched Topcoats

For beginner nail artists, Boyce also suggests experimenting with different finishes. "Try playing with matte and glossy topcoats, like a matte base with a glossy tip or vice versa," she instructs.

4. Modern French

All of our pros agreed that French manicures are back in a big way. "They are simple, but I love that you can really combine any colours to create a clean statement look," says Lisa Logan, consulting manicurist for Nails.Inc and owner of The Nail Suite in Harlem, New York. Boyce agrees, suggesting that people with longer nails go for an almond shape with a darker shade at the tip and that those with shorter nails experiment with the painted curve. 

5. Double-Corner French

Lately, Choi's clients have been requesting a riff on the iconic French manicure. "Clients often ask for different versions of this, modernizing it a bit by using a different colour combo (not just pink and white) or trying colourful tips. They also request things like negative space French manicures, diagonal or two-tone diagonal tips, and ombré French," she says.

6. Ombré French

The above photo is a perfect example of the ombré-French design and can be created using any number of colour combinations.

7. Kitty Cat Tips

These feline-inspired nails give the appearance of claws with dark, angular tips—just in time for Halloween. This design looks best on longer nails, and it can work on extensions, too. "This is slightly harder to DIY, but if you are getting nail extensions, this is such a fierce look," says Boyce.

8. Two-Tone Diagonal Tips

"Many people are slowly easing back into fun, bold manicure looks," shares Logan. Like Choi, Logan's clients have requested modern French manicures with two-tone diagonal tips, as pictured above.

9. Tips Only

"The nail art for this season will be unlike any other mostly because it will be DIY," predicts Mazz Hanna, celebrity manicurist and founder of Mazz Hanna. Simple designs on just the tips of the fingernails are a great way for at-home nail artists to begin while also playing with this season's colour palette. 

10. Tonal Ombré

Instead of multicolour manicures, Logan is seeing more clients request a tonal ombré with two or more colours on a single nail. Like the transition between seasons, this design can carry you from autumn to winter (or your next manicure appointment).

11. Ombré Colour Family

If the multi-nail ombré look seems a bit more feasible to DIY, we love the idea of playing within a cohesive colour family. Hanna agrees, noting, "It is super easy to do and still makes a bold statement." 

12. Glass Extensions

As a specialist in gel extensions, Boyce is, unsurprisingly, all in on the glass nail trend. "It’s a chic design that goes with everything," she shares. "This is slightly harder to DIY, but if you are getting nail extensions, this is such a clean look." 

13. Negative-Space Nail Art

"Nail art has become more and more popular at NYFW," explains Choi. "I expect to see many negative-space manicures with simple and minimalistic nail art, such as the look we created for Proenza Schouler [one season]."

14. Polka Dots

Similarly, Hanna is predicting that polka dots will be back in a big way. "It's super simple to do using a bobby pin, even with limited nail art experience, and you can use any seasonal colour that is trending," she shares. But you can't rush the process. "Polka dots typically take longer to dry, so it’s important that you make sure your dots are completely dry before applying your topcoat," cautions Hanna. "If you apply a topcoat too soon, it will cause the polka dots to drag." And that can make this DIY design prone to re-dos.

15. DIY Designs

Inspired by your favorite nail artist on Instagram? Or ready to try out a freehand design? Choi says to go for it! "Most designs can be done with the edge of your nail polish brush and a bit of practice," she says. She encourages at-home nail artists to begin by using everyday items like a toothpick or a clean makeup sponge. If you're ready to level up, all of our pros recommend buying a set of thin paint brushes and dotting tools.
