Ding, ding! Let Fashion Month (and the race for this season's coolest clothes) commence. We're just a couple of days into New York Fashion Week, and my head has completely switched into autumn mode. The weather in the city has been cheery enough to warrant sundresses and sandals, but that has not deterred the throngs of street stylers and A-listers from delving into a world of new ideas.

And we're spotting a few trends more frequently than others. There's been an in influx of saturated colours, which are most commonly cropping up on simple dress shapes for easy wear. If anything can lure you out of black, navy and grey this autumn, it'll be the bright day dress. There are also trouser suits that put loungewear firmly in the shade, a slew of Y2K throwbacks and boots so tempting we aren't even waiting for the temperature to drop before packing our chunky-soled sandals away for another year. Olivia Palermo, Katie Holmes, the Hadid sisters and many more celebrities have been attending the shows and doing their utmost to showcase autumn's topline trends for you. So without further ado, let's see how New York's fashion crowd is doing the new season.

The autumn 2021 runways may have been chock-full of wild ideas, but they also offered a range of very simple, easy-to-chuck-on dresses, like this turquoise one from Kate Spade NY.

They are the perfect base for trending accessories like Katie Holmes's leopard print pumps and '90s-inspired shoulder bag, also from Kate Spade.

Olivia Palermo is no stranger to wearing bright colours, but she's historically more of a print-clash girl. However, this doubly shocking pink combo is really something to behold. She's even matched her eyeshadow—now that's dedication.

Emily Ratajkowski's LRD (Little Red Dress) from Peter Dundas isn't exactly the easiest day dress to throw on, but minis are back, so you may as well get used to it. Side note: How great does Ciara look here in military green?

Trouser suits are making a comeback after a few seasons at the bottom of the pile while so many people were working from home. A looser fit is preferred for autumn. And if you want to take things up a notch, wear it sans top. Holmes is pictured here wearing Christian Siriano.

Actress Tommy Dorfman knows the power of a great black suit. If you keep it simple and look for a perfect fit, the suit will do all the hard work for you.

For a more deconstructed look, take a leaf out of Gigi Hadid's book, and wear an oversized blazer with printed trousers and a tee.

Naomi Watts looks every inch the superstar she is in this velvet trouser suit. Note how she carefully modernised a retro look with a simple cami top.

The extreme cut-out trend started last summer and has proven to be such a hit that it's sticking around for autumn (a season that typically goes hand-in-hand with covering up). 

Holmes gives this Christopher Esber cut-out dress a laid-back spin with Adidas sneakers and an overshirt. Smart.

Cut-outs don't have to be all va-va-voom. They can be cute, too. Palermo proved this at the PatBO show.

Corsetry is back in full force, and you can blame it entirely on Y2K. The trend is pure nostalgia. Just look at Hadid's bodiced tube dress.

Taking things up to a notch previously reserved for girl bands in the '00s, Irina Shayk is not messing around with this fierce corset-and-cargo-pant formula.

An autumnal favourite, knee boots are doing the rounds yet again. We particularly like EmRata's ultra-autumnal palette.

Aerospace scientist and all-around cool girl Sara Adewumi bridges the gap between summer and autumn by wearing her knee boots with bare legs.

While fashion week is usually reserved for the most outlandish looks and OTT outfits, this year it has been refreshing to see many of our fashion favourites choosing to attend the shows in surprisingly understated looks. From roll-necks and blue jeans to trenchcoats and blazers, the fashion set has opted for pared-down outfits this season, which have generally been comprised of the basic wardrobe staples most of us already own. In fact, a number of the key looks are so simple, we're convinced you can recreate them using items in your existing closet. 

Do you own a few beige jumpers? Great! You can very easily steal Eva Chen's double-knit look from the JW Anderson show. Are you in the possession of blue jeans, a white tee and a beige trench coat? Wonderful! You can basically copy Sabina Socol's exact look from NYFW. Or if you happen to own a white blazer and black midi dress, you're already 90% of the way to reimagining Olivia Palermo's outfit from the Gucci show.

Whether this is proof that celebs are championing the concept of a capsule wardrobe or it is simply a coincidence, we will never know. But one thing is for sure: If re-creating their looks is this easy, we'll certainly be drawing inspiration from the style set throughout the rest of the fashion season.

It's easy to argue that tennis is the chicest spectator sport of them all, thanks to the likes of Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton and Anna Wintour holding court in the well-dressed stands at tournaments around the world. Naturally, this year's U.S. Open tournament in New York City is no exception. Last night, Olivia Palermo stayed cool on a sweltering NYC night in a suite for tournament sponsor Grey Goose—and she wore the perfect outfit to sip on honey deuces and take in Maria Sharapova's and Roger Federer's matches.

Palermo dressed up her jeans with a few elevated pieces: a classic black blazer, a tuxedo blouse, oxford shoes and a Bulgari Serpenti bag. However, at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, she wore a colourful outfit we really didn't see coming. Traditional styling rules would tell you to never clash prints, whether that's florals or stripes. But we are big believers that when it comes to fashion, rules should be flamboyantly broken. Olivia Palermo showed how clashing stripes can look seriously cool, wearing a red, white and black vertical-striped wrap skirt with a yellow, black and white striped scarf draped over one shoulder. Last night was one of the biggest nights in the fashion calendar, the CFDA Awards in New York, but instead of wearing one of the nominees or an established American designer, Olivia Palermo turned to the high street for her red carpet look. Olivia wore a £120 rust-coloured off-the-shoulder dress by Banana Republic with statement sleeves, ties at the waist and black buttons down the left side of the body and a midi skirt.

This dress is from her own capsule collection for Banana Republic, which will be released in September. The dress is available to buy now ahead of the rest of the collection, however, less than 12 hours after Olivia revealed her design, it's almost sold out in every size. Black trousers may not be the first item you reach for when dressing for summer in the city, so trust Olivia Palermo to seek out an utterly practical yet desirable spin on this wardrobe stalwart.

The 31-year-old style maven was pictured in a sunny NYC yesterday tackling the new split-front trend, where a cropped, kick-flare silhouette has been updated with a cutaway hem along the front. Interesting, directional and no doubt perfectly cooling, the result was weather-appropriate and still oozed sophistication.

Palermo, whose affection for the high street chain, Zara, we have well documented, could have well picked up a pair in her local branch, as the Spanish retailer is offering a myriad of styles around this new cut. Reason number 687 we love Olivia Palermo: She's as big of a Zara fan as we (and you) are. She even chooses to wear it over high-end designer pieces throughout fashion month each season. Furthermore, she's said of the wildly popular fast-fashion brand, "I realised that wherever I go [when travelling], I can stop in at Zara." We'd be remiss to not admit that we, too, have "forgotten" to pack certain clothing items for a getaway just as an excuse to follow her lead and pick up a few things at the nearest Zara location.

Palermo's selections are certainly varied, but we have noticed that she often sticks to certain types of items when she shops at Zara (and everywhere else, for that matter—she knows what she likes). For example, you may have noticed that she loves a good embroidered shirt, LBD and structured jacket. Suits can be a little intimidating for some, but this weekend, at a luncheon in New York City, Olivia Palermo gave us a lesson in how to soften masculine tailoring. Olivia wore an Annie Hall–esque check suit by Chloé with a double-breasted blazer with deep pockets and wide-leg, floor-skimming trousers.

She kept the Annie Hall signature—a blue printed tie—but she opted for a feminine floral printed skinny scarf by Frame looped around her neck and turned to the right-hand side. We all have that one piece in our wardrobe we can always rely on, the one that transcends seasons. For Olivia Palermo, that closet staple is a tan Storets sweater featuring a choker and cutout sleeves with a zipper detail.

The stylish It girl most recently wore the versatile £59 top while in Milan for fashion week, where she played with texture by pairing it with a burgundy fur coat and a leather skirt. Paris Fashion Week shows always attract the biggest celebrities, as A-listers flock to see their latest red carpet options from the biggest houses in the business: Chanel, Dior, Valentino and more. This season has been no exception as we've seen standout front-row looks from the likes of Solange Knowles, Rihanna. Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo, Lily Rose Depp and more.

Earlier today, Chloé staged its A/W 17 show, and in our opinion, the front row was one of the best dressed of the season. While the '80s might be having a mega comeback, at Chloé, Olivia Palermo proved that classic '70s pieces still look impeccably stylish. Olivia wore a pair of navy flared trousers with gold buttons at the hip and a sporty yellow stripe down each leg. The stripe along the sides, plus a pair of heels and a floor-grazing hemline made them even more leg-lengthening.

She paired her flares with a coordinating navy jumper with ties hanging from the side and oversize sleeves with white shirt cuffs. She then added another '70s-inspired accessory, a skinny printed silk scarf looped once around her neck. Combined with the glossiest hair in the business, we wish we could look like this every single day.

Fashion editors have now ticked New York and London off the fashion month schedule and descended upon Milan to see the likes of Fendi, Gucci and Prada. The shows only started on Wednesday morning, but the front rows have already been graced my many of our favourite fashion faces including Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo and Tavi Gevinson.

For the show and after-party, Alexa Chung wore two dreamy Gucci looks, styling the perfect blazer and Marmont bag in the day and then a silver shirtdress with a bow at the collar to the evening event. Olivia Palermo has also been attending the shows in Milan, wearing a yellow coat and blue velvet slippers to Max Mara and a printed green silk dress to Fendi with matching green-tinted sunglasses.

Olivia Palermo is always up for trying new trends and brands, but she tends to play favourites and wear her most-loved pieces and designers on repeat. Given that Valentino Garavani is a close friend, can you blame her? We've talked at length about what Palermo loves to wear, but what about the things we've noticed she hardly wears at all? One of the best things about Paris Fashion Week, in our opinion, is that we get at least one new Olivia Palermo outfit a day. At the Alexis Mabille show yesterday, OP wore one of our favourite outfits in some time, channelling a drummer boy in a navy military coat by Fay with red velvet cuffs and pockets.

Athleisure has been one of the most widespread trends of late, but Palermo proves that if you're not a crop top–and-tracksuit kind of girl, you can still channel the sporty look with something Vogue has dubbed "athluxury." Instead of scruffy retro sportswear, this is about looking upscale in country club–style clothing. It can be tricky to add personality or a point of difference to your look it's icy—there's only so many ways you can wear a chunky scarf and coat. But pictures of Olivia Palermo, our constant source of style inspiration, in New York over the weekend show an easy styling trick that will make you fall in love with your winter coat all over again. When we got over that she had dressed her dog in little yellow shoes (seriously), our eyes were drawn to her black belt, which she had looped into an interesting knot. To reinvent your everyday winter coat, follow Olivia's lead and remove the built-in belt and replace it with a chunky leather style. The added bonus is it also helps the waist to look more defined.

So how do you tie the belt just like Olivia? Follow these simple steps:

1) Wrap the belt around your waist, not feeding it through the belt loops in your coat. Opt for a longer belt so you have more length to play with.

2) Position the belt towards your left hand side, rather than in the centre as usual.

3) Fasten the belt normally, but do not put it through any belt loops and if possible opt for a belt without any loops. 

4) Then feed the belt in the opposite direction than usual at a slight angle so you can loop it underneath the belt. Then pull it through to the other side and feed it through in between the two pieces of belt to create a tight knot. 

This twist has been a blogger and Pinterest favourite for some time—Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific often uses this as a way to add another dimension to a classic pair of jeans or a summer dress. But knotting a belt over outerwear is one nifty styling trick that we haven't seen all over Pinterest (yet).

If ever there were a flat shoe aficionado, Olivia Palermo is undoubtedly it. Olivia’s Reiss coat has had a number of outings this year, proving once again how Olivia isn't afraid to mix high street with designer. The coat itself might seem simple, but look closer and you'll see this double-breasted blazer has shiny gold buttons—which adds a little bling to the black.

The label may have only been around for three years, but Han Chong’s elegant eveningwear has already garnered itself a reputation as the go-to brand for celebrities. Here, Olivia wears the Amelia Lace-Panelled Pleated Dress (£290). With its empire-line silhouette and floral lace—mirrored by Olivia’s metallic scarf—it says ultimate romance. Olivia has Stella McCartney's Elyse Platforms in a couple of different colourways. With their Oxford-inspired design, they are a perfect match to a tailored suit—and provide a nice little lift for a petite lady.

This Tibi Off the Shoulder Tunic (£265) is another of Olivia’s S/S 16 signature looks. Elegant and cotton, it's clear why it worked for her this summer. Paired with ripped denim, it gives her an artsy kinda vibe—and we're certain this kind of action has been integral in the year's statement top boom.

This reversible bomber jacket from Topshop is a statement piece, demonstrating that Olivia turns to the high street for more than just mere essentials. Its colourful embroidery complements her embroidered Alexander McQueen slippers, providing splashes of colour from top to toe, livening up an otherwise sombre ensemble.

Olivia was photographed in this Nina Ricci blue leather skirt a couple of times earlier this year, and every time she offered up a sumptuous new colour palette for us to try. A little forward planning for this autumn wouldn't go amiss, so hold onto this. 

Paired with tights and heels, this oversize military coat from Valentino adds distinct femininity to this look. She often chooses the fashion house for red carpet events but always looks casually cooled when decked out in the brand and heading to its fashion show in Paris.

So much does Olivia's love her shaded eyewear that she designs them for Westward Leaning. She's a fan of the funky frame, crafting pairs in tortoiseshell with a rock-studded detailing, and in shining white with lunar marbling. She's not averse to a coloured lens either—rose gold in particular. 

No one works a Zara item like Olivia, and this shirt is a particularly good example; whether it’s sleeves rolled up and tucked into a pair of pants, or worn loosely jeans and with a leopard print pocket for a statement, Zara items make up many essentials in Olivia's out and about wardrobe.

Olivia Palermo is one of the few celebrities who has the power to start a trend just by wearing something new and fresh while out running errands in New York City. Case in point: She stepped out this week wearing pieces from her upcoming fall collection with Nordstrom's Chelsea28 in-house line, one being a sheer Victorian-inspired black blouse. We're all familiar with the sheer trend by now, but it was what she wore with the blouse that really took us by surprise: suspender trousers!

While various retailers have been stocking suspender trousers recently, it's more of a micro-trend at this point. But sometimes all it needs is a celebrity endorsement to make it a full-blown thing. Perhaps it was the fash pack's unanimous decision that 2016 would be the year they rebelled against the norm and branched out into unexpected sartorial territory. Maybe it's the kooky catwalk mood that's in the air. Or it could be down to the changeable weather and, therefore, the requirement for unusual layering combinations and a seasonal mashup of clothing. Whatever has sparked this new mood for individualism, we like it. And it has made the street snaps of Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris look very jazzy—and occasionally rebellious.

… and doesn't she look swell? It's not often that we see our favourite pint-size preppy queen in such chunky footwear (and when we do, we like to talk about it), but with a plethora of head-to-toe prints and textures, Olivia Palermo chose exactly the right shoes to ground her look: Sol Sana Tabbie Wedges (£118).

… especially when they are this Vêtements frock that we predicted would be the next street style smash (thank you, Susie Lau, for proving our point!) and when they're piled on top of a Breton roll neck and turned-up jeans. … especially if they've been pulled down and whipped into shape by London's gurus of grunge, Marques'Almeida. Its Floral Brocade Top (£343/£171) and Wide Leg Rose Trousers (£398) got a further madcap injection thanks to a Shrimps Audrey Faux Shearling Coat (£595), silver boots and J.W.Anderson's zippy collar. More is apparently more right now, and Olga Karput is your poster girl.

… should you own one in the first place. Simply pop it on over some flared jeans and enjoy the dramatic, swooshy strides you can take like Chinese fashion designer Lulu Tan Gan did here.

… which means that everything must be beaded, adorned in corsages, ruffled, feathered, sequinned, etc. This is couture week, darlings—what more would you expect from the Dior-clad Russian style princess Ulyana Sergeenko and Elena Perminova?

… and that's down to Raf Simons's penultimate Dior show: Resort 16. OP carefully sassed hers up with leather over-the-knee boots and the all-important Dior So Real Clubmaster-Style Sunglasses (£539).

… ditching her usually safe nude slingbacks for something altogether more adventurous: snakeskin knee-high boots. Consider this your all clear to wear python footwear with everything from now on—Diane von Furstenberg's Gladyss Boots (£512/£256) are slithering their way into our wardrobes as we type.

… but with legs like Gilda Ambrosio's, could it really be a problem? She paired her version of the Dior picnic blanket check with clashing booties, and it worked because the demure neckline and supersize sleeves balanced out an expanse of lithe pins.

… as proven by the very hip Aymeline Valade, who is basically our biggest French girl crush at the moment. This makes for a fast entry into how to wear power pastels before spring, and looks far fresher than the now ubiquitous pink outerwear that dominated the fashion scene two winters ago.

… and aren't you glad to see her? This wild mêlée of inside-out-looking cargo pants, silver-striped knit and a cape-blazer hybrid worn with brassy yellow-gold Gucci Metallic Leather Pumps (£530) and a very regal scarf is true TTH. We've missed her witty combinations.

… so get used to it. Gina Jung's Balenciaga jacket (shop for similar styles at MatchesFashion.com), frayed jeans, mini Fendi bag and Adidas sneakers did all the hard work while her lace slip played up to one of the season's most promising new trends.

… which means that you can basically wear them anywhere, anytime, for any occasion. German fashion leader Veronika Heilbrunner made it happen with this extra-pretty Etro maxi dress and Converse CTA OX Pink Canvas Sneakers (£59).

… highly photogenic and a hot hue for S/S 16. No more so than when set against black à la Helena Bordon in Dior, here. Summer is looking to be ripe with juicy citrus shades, but you can easily get in on the act now.

Dang and blast it. Just how did we manage to not see this wondrous, velvet, embroidered jacket in Zara before Olivia Palermo bought it and the style sold out? Talk about bad luck. But let's also talk about the good information this great ensemble from our favourite New Yorker provides. There's the fact that you can at least still buy her shiny shoes; they're the Brian Atwood Oriana Sandals in Metallic Watersnake (£605). Plus, this outfit confirms that the boho jacket as a wardrobe pillar still looks fresh—despite the fact that the 1970s are perhaps not as strongly on the radar this year—especially when mixed and matched in the signature OP way. So although we may not be able to snaffle this exact beauty, all is not lost.
