The futuristic trainer style is defined by a technical-looking raised heel crafted from impact-absorbing columns. The result? Added height and a literal spring in every step, thanks to the unique cushioning system, but not everyone is into it.

But even if this disruptive design isn’t to your taste, there’s much to admire in the way Nike has embedded its innovation into every pair to maximise the wearer’s comfort.

Personally, I love Nike Shox trainers, and I’m not the only one rewinding to Lily Allen’s "LDN" era circa 2006 to style them. I’m seeing fellow converts inside and out of the fashion world teaming trainers in general with dresses and skirts alongside tracksuits and jeans to really step up their outfit game, whether working, Lime-biking, partying, going to football or just about anything else.

The Nike Shox Z is a timely evolution of the original Nike Shox trainers—I had a silver and pink pair myself— that debuted, peaked and faded in the early-to-mid noughties. This specific style feels retro and totally in sync with early 2026 trainer trend reports that chunky styles are on the back burner for now, although the Nike x Martine Rose Shox MR4 mules are a bold exception (also in my collection) helping to keep the hybrid sneaker trend alive. Striking surface details and interesting colours are taking centre stage, and at last count, there were at least 10 different Nike Shox Z colourways. Personally, I think it’s the two-tone and iridescent editions, especially the black-and-red colourway, that make the biggest statement.

Even without my firsthand experience, the shift towards contemporary and vintage Nike Shox styles makes sense. They create a welcome vibe clash that asserts your personality to stand out in any sneaker-obsessed city, and is also a genius twist on yet another burgeoning 2026 shoe trend. As the new Z Shox model is slimmer and more low-profile than the TL and R4 styles, these particular trainers look like teeny-tiny wedges. Unlike the other wedge sneakers working hard to romanticise the 2010s, the cut-out keeps them cool and not so "ugly shoe".

Take it from an accidental sneakerhead like me: of all the Nike Shox styles currently capturing hearts and bank balances, the Z is the one to go for. Whilst the cost-per-wear ratios of each style would work out to be effective, the Nike Shox Z’s silhouette and colour combinations seem the least try-hard, trumping the others, in my opinion.

I monitor trends for a living, so I feel pretty comfortable predicting which silhouettes are set to dominate. As 2026 comes into view, I’ve been tracking the colours, textures and shapes poised to ripple across our wardrobes over the next 12 months—and now, my attention has turned to trainers.

Let's face it, the past 12 months have given us a lot to talk about in the way of shoe trends (and if last year wasn't the year that you bought a pair of ballet pumps, mid-heel boots, Margiela Tabis, moto boots, or kitten-heel slingbacks, what exactly were you wearing?). For 2024, Simone Rocha brought the iconic shoe back with velcro straps to add to the sporty element, but there are also a lot of lace-up iterations on the market as well. Go without socks on milder days but a cosy cashmere style will look just as chic when its chilly.

The pub is a place where many a memory is made, where friends come together to discuss new life events and (often) to fawn over one or two excellent outfit choices. Personally, I love the classic British pub and all that frequent it, because it provides the perfect setting for that casual winding down, debriefing or meeting up. And whilst we were blessed with an Indian summer, the recent autumnal change in season means that those pub-garden drinks will have to come indoors again (begrudgingly for some), and so a little more coverage in the toe department is a must.

Four times a year, Lyst, the global fashion search engine, releases a list of the most popular brands and items on the planet, and its Q1 report has been significantly impacted by our shift in lifestyles. Nike has gone from the 12th most powerful brand to take the number three spot, and a pair of joggers were the eighth hottest women's product. It's not surprising given the surge in demand for loungewear. However, Nike and New Balance are two sportswear brands that are really resonating within fashionable circles.

The "Dad sneaker" running shoe style isn't going out of fashion any time soon, and the V2k is one of the best for pulling off the look. With the mix of textures, colours and chunky running role, these are perfect for pairing with jeans and a heavy jumper.

5. Nike Vomero

Another running shoe that works equally well on and off the track, the Vomero is a high-performance shoe that still manages to look seriously cool. With a distinctive early Noughties feel, these athletic trainers still manage to feel really contemporary.

On 31 May, over 54 articles were published about one pair of pool slides. Before Gareth Southgate's Marks and Spencer waistcoat, it was Nike's "hands-free" shower shoes with bum-bag pockets over the toes that were making international headlines. I have been trying to get a pair of the slides since 31 May, and 42 days (and a long email chain) later, a monochrome pair arrived at Who What Wear UK's London office for me to try. We wanted to test whether or not it's possible to leave the house with everything you need for the day securely placed in the front of these shoes. Considering I carry a canvas tote bag almost every day because I can't fit everything in my mini handbag, I suspected the answer was going to be a firm no.

The first problem? The slides didn't fit me. So Isabel Mundigo-Moore, WWW UK's social media editor (our Cinderella for the day), wore them instead for a coffee break and to run some errands. These are the things that she managed to take along for the walk: chewing gum, debit card, driving license, hair slide, house keys (if you carry one key and don't have a janitor set like I do, that is) and a lipstick.

Alternatively, you could forget all of that and fit one bag of M&M's in one pocket and a Daim bar in the other if snacks are your main priority.

Things that won't fit in a pair of Nike bum-bag slides: phone, passport, Fruit Pastels (unless you've eaten half of them), phone charger (although, the cable will squeeze in), sunscreen and a tube of mascara.

I asked Isabel to summarise her findings of the experiment, and this was her feedback: "I was ready to think they were ridiculous, but I ultimately came to love them. They're super comfy and even when rammed full, they weren't that heavy. I would be careful with putting notes in, though. It's better for debit card payments, as the zipper was tricky at checkout."

I accompanied Isabel for her coffee break and can confirm that her forward-bend squat (with a long queue directly behind her) to pay for her frappe was something the customers in Pret Russell Square weren't quite ready for.

Style Notes: Currently this is the Nike sneaker with the biggest high-fashion following. While it comes in various colours, our preference is the white version with the black tick. We say you can wear it with pretty much anything and look chic.

The word "beautiful" isn't usually the first one that comes to mind when we're talking about trainers. But Victoria's Secret Angel Romee Strijd just wore a pair of Nike trainers that have been referred to as "beautiful," and shoppers are smitten. The trainers have great reviews so far on Nike's site, where Strijd's tan pair is sold out in many sizes. Aside from "beautiful," the woven sneakers are also super lightweight with side venting allowing for airflow (perfect for when summer comes around), and the "generously padded" footbed is to die for in the comfort stakes.

Strijd styled the cool sneakers with vintage-inspired jeans and a white tee, which is exactly how we would. The trainers are also available in black and cream versions, but we're particularly smitten with the flattering nude pair.

According to our inside intel, Nike Air Max Thea trainers are some of the most searched-for trainers on Google. Of all the fashion oxymorons in the world, fur sandals has to be one of the funniest (and funnest). Fur (winter) + sandals (summer) = one very confused, but weirdly very popular, shoe.

The references one could pull up for this sudden boom in furry or fluffy slip-on mules are pretty varied: Add in a stiletto heel and you've got sassy boudoir slippers suitable for all Dita Von Teese wannabes, but if you go back to the very high-fashion root of the trend, you'll find the controversy-making fur-covered and -lined shoes of Céline S/S 13. And—trust us, because we've been getting a sneak peek at all of next season's collections—this is lined up to be even bigger news later in the year, with more styles on the horizon from Malone Souliers, Natasha Zinko, Avec Modération and Christopher Kane, to name but a few.

More recently, Gucci's Princetown furry loafers and moccasins put the idea back on the map. However, in the past few days, the world has been insta-chatting over Kylie Jenner's customised, marabou-trimmed Nikes, and just this morning Rihanna launched some similarly pink fuzzy unisex slides for the drop of her Fenty collaboration with Puma—the Fur Slide has already sold out.

Think you've seen it all when it comes to designer collaborations? The upcoming Givenchy for Nike collection just might change your mind. 

Vogue photographed Joan Smalls and rapper Travis Scott in the wares, which won't be available until July. But from what we can tell so far, it's going to be a home run. “The shapes are all brand new,” Givenchy artistic director Riccardo Tisci told the Financial Times. “They’re all Riccardo Tisci shapes. The purpose was to bring a new volume, a new concept to the sports industry, but respecting the functionality and performance of Nike.” If the massive popularity of both brands is any indication, we have a feeling this collaboration will sell out in record-breaking time.

The fashion industry's relationship with logos, branding and monogramming is a bit of a love/hate one. Right now these stamps are back in town—in a BIG way—but for a long time the idea of wearing conspicuous marks of any label was considered gauche and cheap. That was way back when stealth minimalism seized the runways (hello Phoebe Philo's debut Céline collection in 2009!) and even handbags only whispered of their design homeland in the smallest, subtlest ways.

A few seasons ago, radical upstarts started hijacking the recognisable motifs and brand names of our visual style culture, using them to emblazon cheeky novelty goods, and the slogo—that's a hybrid slogan and logo—was born. Take Brian Lichtenberg's Homies or Ballin tees—both a naughty take on Hermès and Balmain, both flew out of stores.

Now high-fashion designers have done a 360, reclaiming this important part of a brand's DNA for themselves. Meaning that for S/S 16 J.W.Anderson printed Loewe's name all over dresses and sporty bags, Chanel had plenty of signature double CC action covering dresses and accessories alike, and Nicolas Ghesquière employed his fashion house's classic logo for LV-monogrammed biker jackets—as well as bags and shoes—at Louis Vuitton.

Then there are the creatives who are taking more common logos and reinterpreting them—buzzy brand Vetements is offering you a yellow DHL T-shirt (it's already sold out in two sizes!) or the fact that luxury e-stores like Net-a-Porter have Nike swooshes or Adidas Originals trefoils nestled amongst traditionally high-fashion wares.

What's in store: Nike recently filed for two patents that shed light on what the company has up its sleeve. According to Quartz, the first patent document reveals that the brand is working on a sneaker with a built-in activity tracker. "The patent suggests it would perform many of the functions of other wearables, monitoring a runner’s distance, speed, and calories burned," Quartz reports. "Nike could use that information to map a run route and allow you to set different goals." The other patent document concerns new, highly detailed methods of customising sneakers—even down to the pattern and type of material. Of all the causes for Lena Dunham to take up, her most recent one is slightly unexpected. Known for promoting body positivity and acceptance of all shapes and sizes, the director and actress posted a photo of herself at the gym on Instagram this weekend encouraging others to work out for the sake of their mental health rather than the size of their thighs. The long caption read:

Promised myself I would not let exercise be the first thing to go by the wayside when I got busy with Girls Season 5 and here is why: it has helped with my anxiety in ways I never dreamed possible. To those struggling with anxiety, OCD, depression: I know it's mad annoying when people tell you to exercise, and it took me about 16 medicated years to listen. I'm glad I did. It ain't about the arse, it's about the brain. It's an admirable message and one that nicely reframes exercise as being more about your brain than your body. The Tracy Anderson Method, which counts Gwyneth Paltrow as it's number one fan, is known for whittling models and actresses into their skinniest selves, so this perspective is certainly refreshing. ?We commend Dunham for taking up the healthy habit of exercise and sharing her experience with her many fans in a way that is grounded in empowerment rather than shame.
