Yes, that's right, I'm still on the hunt to find the best products for glowing, radiant skin. You might notice that I write about this topic a lot, as it's truly become a mission of mine to test out every highlighter, primer, tinted moisturiser and foundation on the market to see which ones will deliver the dewiest results. During this quest, I've come to realise that foundation isn't really for me. Instead, I much prefer a lightweight base that doesn't feel heavy on the skin. So, I've turned my attention to skin tints and tinted moisturisers to find out which ones to add to my collection. Next on the list? Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser (£37).

I'm sure you're already familiar with this product, as it's become somewhat of a cult buy in the tinted moisturiser stakes. I'm a big fan of Nars products, from the brand's iconic blushes to its creamy concealers, but I had yet to give Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser a go, until now. As soon as I got my hands on this product, I couldn't wait to test it out to see if it would live up to its promises of delivering a radiant, natural finish, so keep scrolling to read my review and see how I got on.

My Review of Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser

The Formula

First things first, let's talk about the formula. As described by the brand, this tinted moisturiser "hydrates and smooths" the skin, with the added bonus of SPF 30. Of course, I would always recommend applying a dedicated SPF before makeup, but I still like the fact that this gives extra protection. Not only does it contain SPF, but the oil-free formula also includes vitamin C and French Polynesian Kopara to hydrate and brighten the complexion. I'm a big fan of makeup with added skincare benefits, so after reading about the formula online, I seriously couldn't wait to get this on my skin.

There are 16 shades available, and at first, I was a little unsure which to go for. Luckily for me, the website has a really handy shade-matching tool that can help you find the best option. I opted for two shades in the end (light 1.2 and light 3), as sometimes I like my makeup to look a little warmer. After testing them both out, I'd say that light 3 is my favourite, but I also like mixing them together on days when I'm not as tanned.

I swatched the product on my hand at first and was immediately impressed by how lightweight it felt. I applied it to my skin with both my fingers and a brush, and both methods were so easy thanks to how blendable the formula is. I've been suffering with patches of dry skin on my face lately, but this glided on and didn't cling to anything, which was a big win. If I'm being totally honest, after wearing it all day, I completely forgot I had any makeup on whatsoever. That's how lightweight this is.

The Coverage

As with most tinted moisturisers, I wasn't expecting heaps of coverage. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how my skin looked after applying a light layer. Not only did it even out my skin tone, but my blemishes and dark circles were a lot less noticeable. Don't get me wrong; I would probably still add some concealer under my eyes, but I didn't feel as if I needed to apply anything else to the rest of my face. Normally, when a foundation has more coverage, I find that you can really see the makeup on the skin, but my complexion still looked really natural with this.

The Verdict

So, how would I rate this tinted moisturiser? If you asked me to give it a score out of 10, I'd definitely give it a solid eight. The formula itself is incredible; it was so easy to apply and I loved the way that it made my skin look. That being said, did I feel like it gave me a really glowy finish? Probably not. Yes, my skin looked more radiant, and yes, I felt like my complexion had a natural, subtle sheen to it, but if you want that super-dewy look, then I'd recommend mixing in some glow drops to the formula or using a dewy setting spray over the top. I personally love using my Drunk Elephant B-Goldi Bright Drops before applying the tinted moisturiser for my desired finish.

Although it's not really, really dewy, I still love the way my skin looks when I use this, and it's safe to say that this product has become a staple in my collection for those no-makeup makeup days. At £37 it's certainly not cheap, but a little goes a long way, so in my opinion, it's a worthwhile investment.

Back when I worked at a beauty counter, my most frequently requested product recommendation was probably for the best tinted moisturiser for mature skin types.

Most people, upon experiencing the changes that come with skin ageing—skin laxity, fine lines and hyperpigmentation—sought something lighter than natural-looking foundation and wanted a product with skincare benefits, but didn't want to compromise when it came to coverage.

What Does a Tinted Moisturiser Do?

Tinted moisturisers are essentially skincare/makeup hybrids. The best tinted moisturisers for mature skin even the complexion and contain the concealing properties of a foundation, minus the heavy texture and propensity for creasing, caking and settling into fine lines and pores. They also feature various associated benefits from moisturisers too; depending on the product or formula, this may involve plumping, refining or hydrating the skin. They give similar lightweight coverage to that of a skin tint or foundation drops.

Is Tinted Moisturiser Better for Mature Skin Than Foundation?

If you're on the hunt for a base product for mature skin that's lighter and more breathable, then a tinted moisturiser may be the better alternative to a foundation for mature skin.

"For me, the most important thing is that tinted moisturisers add radiance," explains celebrity makeup artist, Neil Young. "As we mature, the skin lacks natural radiance, and it tends to be drier, so anything you can do to add that back into the complexion is always beneficial," he adds.

"The wonderful thing about tinted moisturisers is they’re more of a stained-glass skin effect, so you can see the skin through the product, and what that will do is allow you to go a little bit deeper in tone than you would with a foundation, and it will still look completely natural."

What's more, tinted moisturisers are so easy to apply—you don't even need a makeup brush because your fingertips will suffice as the formula is much lighter to work with. If you come here often, you’ll know that my ongoing battle with dark circles has been a long and tumultuous one. No doubt due to genetics, I’ve been graced with two prominent under-eye dark circles on my face for as long as I can remember. And while I don’t particularly mind the way that they look, over the years, I’ve become totally fed up with people telling me I look tired when in reality I’ve slept for 10 hours.

I have spent a huge chunk of my life testing every eye cream out there that promises to rid my under-eyes of dark circles, and the truth is none of them works. Sure, they can brighten things up a little and help tackle dehydration, but no eye cream is going to totally cure dark circles. After countless consultations with various doctors about the possibility of tear-trough filler and coming to the realisation that, actually, filler wasn’t something I wanted, I came to accept that concealer was set to become my best friend.

And so, for my entire adult life, I have been on a never-ending quest to find the ultimate under-eye concealer. And whoa, have I found a few firecrackers. From The Ordinary High-Coverage Concealer to Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Duo, I have stumbled across some seriously impressive full-coverage formulas in my time. However, it seems that no matter how great the concealer, all too often, the remnants of those pesky purple hues always find a way to creep through. And that, my friends, is where a colour corrector comes into play. More specifically, Nars Radiant Creamy Color Corrector.

While concealers work to cover up blemishes with a matching shade to your skin tone, under-eye colour correctors, which should be applied before concealer, harness apricot and orange shades to counteract the blue hues that commonly present under the eyes. And while I have tried colour correctors before (Becca Under Eye Corrector was an old favourite), the truth is I’m a lazy gal who doesn’t want the extra step in my routine. Until now, apparently.

I would like to announce that I have finally found the dark-circle buster I’ve been searching for my whole life. I am no stranger to the wonders of Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. It’s a cult classic that covers up everything in its tracks while leaving skin glowing and natural-looking. And now, Nars has cottoned on to the fact that no matter how great that formula is, it’s never going to fully counteract dark circles. And so, we now have Nars Radiant Creamy Color Corrector.

In four stretchable shades suitable for an array of skin tones, the formula is equally as creamy, radiant and blendable as its sister concealer but has been formulated with red-toned pigments to counteract dark circles. And wow, does it work. After blending a small amount under my eyes, I could tell straight away that this was a product I wasn’t going to want to be without.

My dark circles were noticeably minimised without having that telltale cakey finish that a heavy-duty concealer usually gives. My whole face looked brighter and significantly less tired. And the best bit is, it couldn’t be easier to use. Whereas some of my previous favourite under-eye correctors have had a sticky, putty-like consistency, this stuff is light, meaning it can be patted in with fingers and blended out with minimal work. Finished off with a few dabs of my usual concealer over the top, it was like my dark circles never existed.

The most frequently asked questions I've had throughout my decade-long career as an editor have all revolved around concealer, which is handy considering I'm a concealer addict. Since my early teens, I've suffered from hereditary dark circles, circles that, no matter how much sleep I get or water I drink, insist upon staying. Over the years, I've been able to make my peace with them thanks in no small part to the discovery of brilliant concealers, which help me to blend away most of their effects. I've road-tested countless concealers in my search to uncover the formulas that work best. While there are a couple of long-standing concealers that'll forever have a place in my makeup bag, I'm always up for trying new finds, just in case I happen upon something great.

While talking to my friends at ASOS HQ, my interest was piqued when they revealed that one of their top five best-selling beauty products throughout lockdown was a £5 concealer I hadn't tried before. After our conversation, I started to see the concealer—Revolution's Conceal and Define Concealer—all over social media. So I thought I better try it to see what all the fuss was about. I'm no beauty snob. Much of my beauty collection consists of high-street and (as our American colleagues would say) drugstore buys. But I was interested to see how this frugal concealer would measure up against the products I love and use daily.

What I Liked: Let's talk cost. Currently, the most expensive concealer in my makeup bag costs £38. Do I genuinely love it? Yes. Can I justify buying it regularly? No. Revolution's Conceal and Define Concealer costs £5 and, on paper, does the same job. Who can argue with that? Coverage-wise, you can't ask for much more. It helped eliminate my dark circles with a minimum amount of product, which went a long way in the process, so it's not a concealer you'd necessarily burn through, particularly if, like me, you've streamlined your beauty routine during lockdown. 

What I Liked: As with all of my go-to concealers, this one has a doe-foot applicator, which I find gives the smoothest application (during lockdown, I've tried concealers with brush and sponge applicators, which continuously leave me unimpressed), and it's incredibly long-lasting to boot. When it arrived, I applied a small amount to the back of my hand to swatch the shade. When it came to washing off, it took a bit of effort to budge, so I was eager to see what the results when I wore it would be.

What I Liked: I touch my face a lot throughout the day, but this concealer remained in situ and looked freshly applied until, in the early evening, I removed it with my cleanser. What also sets this concealer apart is its extensive colour range—there are 49 to choose from, which makes it one of the most diverse concealers I've come across. And finally, I like that the brand is committed to being cruelty-free, something you would think every brand ought to be in 2020. But alas, this just isn't the case.

What I Didn't Like: I'm fully aware that this is down to personal preference, but I'm not enamoured with the matte finish. Though, I know some of you will be. If that's the look you prefer, this concealer is definitely for you. But I like my concealers to have a slightly dewier finish. Still, I'm impressed at how lightweight the concealer felt on my skin, considering its matte full coverage. 

What I Didn't Like: I'll admit I was completely overwhelmed trying to find the colour to match my complexion, as it's difficult trying to colour match online. After much deliberation, I ended up opting for shade C3, and I still don't think I got it right. Naturally, this a problem that's currently being faced by many beauty brands, as there are significantly fewer opportunities for potential customers to get hands-on with the product via in-store testers, something I consider critical when looking for new base products. 

Had we been living in "normal" times right now, I'd have preferred to make my way to either Superdrug or Boots, both of which are Revolution stockists, to see the colour spectrum first-hand. I would then handily top up by way of my regular ASOS orders. However, this is where the price, once again, proves critical. I can't tell you how much money I've spent on beauty products over the years that have wound up being underwhelming. £5 isn't to be scrimped at by any means, but its affordable price tag, in my eyes, makes it less of a gamble.

Overall verdict: If matte base makeup is your thing, you'll love this concealer. The shade range is what I, and everyone else at Who What Wear, love (and also need) to see. This level of diversity should be standard in the beauty industry. Why wait for other brands to play catch-up when Revolution is already there?

We often talk about desert island beauty—the products you'd prioritise above all the rest, if you were to find yourself stranded on, you guessed it, a desert island. And I can say, without hesitation, that mine would be concealer.

I first started using Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in 2013—the year it launched. I was working on the InStyle digital desk at the time, and when samples of the concealer landed on our desks, mass hysteria broke out. Smears were applied to the backs of hands, then delicately patted under eyes with fingertips. "It's like a soft veil," one colleague exclaimed. She was right. Unlike the cakey concealers that were commonplace, Nars's Radiant Creamy Concealer was smooth and easy to apply, without forgoing on coverage. Doin' the Bare Minimum

As someone who has a 71-year-old beauty fanatic as her mother (surprising I became a beauty editor, right?), I know all too well the trials and tribulations surrounding foundation and mature skin. Of course, finding the best foundation for your skin texture, tone and type is hard enough at any age, but when you throw into the mix age-related conundrums like discolouration from sun damage, fine lines or wrinkles and dehydration, the challenge only gets steeper.

Being that my mum is an actual makeup artist, I've definitely absorbed some of her wisdom and tips over the years—minimal, if any, powder and absolutely no super-matte formulas. She has flawless skin (both with and without makeup), so I've taken her guidance to heart. That said, I was interested to compare notes with some of the top celebrity makeup artists in the industry who regularly cater to Hollywood's leading ladies 40 and over. What foundations do they always have on hand for red carpet prep, and what application tips do they hold gospel to ensure their clients with mature skin look as radiant and healthy as possible? The Best Foundation, Product and Application Tips

1. Your Skin Prep Is Everything

Every makeup artist we spoke to explained that without a well-prepped base (i.e. hydrated and healthy skin) any foundation application will flounder. Prepping the skin with the right products and ample moisture is crucial for a seamless, long-lasting finish. 

"I am really, really big on prep—prep is EVERYTHING," exclaims celebrity makeup artist Tamah Krinsky, whose clients include Julianna Margulies, Mary Steenburgen, Judy Greer, Idina Menzel and Christy Turlington. "Regardless of age, how you prep your skin determines how your foundation will sit on your skin, and the more hydrated and healthy your skin is to start, the better your foundation will look. My clients would tell you skin prep is the longest part of their time in the makeup chair with me!"

Krinsky recommends starting the process with a luxe spray like Josh Rosebrook's Hydrating Accelerator (£75) before moving onto an oil. She typically applies around six drops, although it depends on the day and client. "I take three to five minutes to massage the oil from the hairline to the collarbones. It's amazing what that alone can do for your complexion! My favourites are Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Oil (£34) and Eve Lom Radiance Face Oil (£60)," she says.

Afterward, she'll press a pea-sized amount of moisturiser into the skin to lock all the magic in. She loves anything from Drunk Elephant, Dr. Hauschka or La Roche-Posay.

2. If You Use Brushes, Make Sure They're Synthetic

So the jury is out on whether or not it's best to use brushes or a damp sponge (like our beloved Beautyblender, £18) for foundation application. Our makeup artists were equally divided in their preference! So we recommend trying both methods to see what you prefer. That said, if you go the brush route, Krinsky recommends using multiple sizes and always reaching for a brush with synthetic brush fibres versus natural hair.

"No matter what foundation I'm using, I always use two brushes—one to deposit the formula and one to blend," she confirms. "I like to use brushes on the smaller side so I can be specific and blend around the structure of the face. To deposit foundation, I use a small flat synthetic eye shadow brush. Synthetic brushes don't hold onto pigment and products as much as natural hair brushes, so you save your products from being wasted, and they leave the foundation where you put them."

To blend, Krinsky tells us she switches to a medium-sized fluffy eye shadow contour brush. Although her brush process takes more time than using a Beautyblender, she thinks it offers more precision in addition to a more seamless result.

3. Don't Buy Foundation When You're in a Hurry

Sorry, but finding the right foundation—consistency, finish and shade—takes some time and effort. And Krinsky is especially adamant about taking the time to find your perfect shade. 

"Make sure you are matching your skin tone," she advises. "Always ask for a sample (or better yet, multiple!) and look at yourself in daylight. It should look 100% seamless, and if it isn’t, it’s the wrong shade for you."

4. Don't Apply Foundation to Your Entire Face

"Only use foundation where you need it," Krinsky adds. "Use small amounts, and take your time to blend them into your skin. You don't have to apply a huge amount of foundation to your entire face. You should be using it to even out your skin tone—not to cover your skin."

"Let's be real—online swatches are never 100% accurate, and shade names aren't standardised, so it's best to tap into a brand's customer service or a trained makeup artist, whose job it is to know everything, from the curation of foundations to formulation to finish," explains Violet Grey's beauty director, Maureen Choi. "A quick email exchange or phone call with a trusted resource who understands your skin and makeup concerns can make all the difference in receiving the perfect fit on your doorstep.

"Sometimes you have to try before you buy, particularly when it comes to foundation. A good rule of thumb is to ask for samples in three shades—the one you've shade-matched to your complexion, then one shade lighter and one shade deeper. That way, you can test all three in broad daylight and get an accurate sense of what looks best. According to makeup artist and Violet Grey committee member Pati Dubroff, using two shades of foundation—a light shade down the centre of the face and one a shade darker along the perimeter—is the secret to getting the most natural, subtly defined, second-skin look."

The year is 2014. I've just got home from school, popped on my Topshop onesie (IYKYK), and I'm sitting down in front of my laptop to watch beauty videos on YouTube. Amongst the Maybelline Baby Lips lip balms and Mac Paint Pot eyeshadows is a brand that every OG beauty guru swears by. A brand that feels like the ultimate window into the world of luxury makeup. Have your accessories ready to go! Always have accessories top of mind for days when you need to pump up your look and you don’t have the luxury of time. They can quickly take a look from simple to fashion-forward."

Because the pace of New York doesn’t slow down, we city ladies probably give our shoes a lot more thought than one would consider to be normal. One trick is pairing comfortable shoes with something dressy, or the reverse: pair dressy heels with something casual on top.

Always think of opposites and contrast–an outfit usually looks more interesting with items that fall under different categories. Think long with short, dressy with casual, soft with hard, and masculine with feminine. This could be as simple as wearing a nicely tailored, straightforward suit and popping on a pair of dramatic chandelier earrings.

Know the proportions that work for you. Wearing heavy, slouchy layers on top? Style them over something slim on the bottom. If you're going slouchy and baggy on the bottom, pair it with something slim on top.

Have your third piece ready. New York City girls know you always need a third piece, even if it's 100 degrees out; once you walk into the office, you’re going to be freezing.

You should know when to go bold or go neutral with your makeup. My formula is one of opposites: If I’m wearing something bright and bold, I play down my makeup, and if I’m wearing neutral colours and need a pop, I’ll add a punched-up lip or eye.

Lastly, all New York girls know: when you're not sure what to wear and you're out of time, you can always rely on black or white.

While fashion's main claim to fame may be its seasonality—what's "in" and "out" is bound to change alongside the weather—there are some items that stylish women stock their closets with year-round.

We asked our resident styling expert, Banana Republic's Marissa Webb, to share her thoughts on which accessories can take a woman from season to season in style. Keep scrolling to see the six pieces she thinks every woman needs! 

You can never have enough pairs. Most people have their signature shape, but to mix up your look, I think it's worth exploring all different types every season. There's usually something new out there to add to my collection. It's also fun to explore different colour frames, and to shop in both the men's and women's sections.

Handbags are a great way to freshen up your look. I usually carry something neutral during the day, and love to add a pop of colour to my handbag at night.

I usually go softer in the winter and a little bit bolder in the summer, when I have a bit more colour from the sun. Lipstick shades are, of course, very personal depending on skin tone, so a lipstick that looks great on you might not work for me. It's important to try different brands to find the perfect shade for you.

Scarves are a great accessory for all year-round in different weights and fabrications. It's one of those easy pick-up items from your travels. They also make great gifts!
