But let’s be honest, this iconic decade has never really left us. But it’s undeniably more evident in 2026. And if there’s one nineties category that made the biggest mark this year, it would certainly have to be beauty. More specifically, '90s makeup looks are making a huge comeback this year, with some of the biggest trends being those we saw dominate almost four decades ago.

Now, we know that makeup trends come and go, especially in the age of TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, but there’s just something about a ‘90s makeup look that feels timeless, fitting right into the current zeitgeist without a second thought. Of course, there are trends that, as a makeup minimalist, would have had me running in the opposite direction: body glitter, bright blue eyeshadow and face gems, to name a few. As someone with extremely dry skin, I’ve always been skeptical about recreating the ultra-matte bases that dominated the mid-90s. However, there are now plenty of products that give that blurring effect without sucking out every bit of moisture from the skin. So, I’m ready to give this long-lasting, sophisticated look a try.

I’m not trying to brag, but I’ve been rocking the dark lip liner trend since I was a young teen. Between ultra matte blacks, cool-toned browns and deep burgundy hues, this is a trend that I can guarantee will never date.

Although this mesmerising eyeshadow look has technically never stopped trending, I, for one, will be taking a cue from the likes of ‘90s icons such as Cindy Crawford and recreating this more subtle look for summer evenings out.

When I think of iconic ‘90s outfits, my mind instantly wanders to a few pivotal points during the decade. There's the '90s fashion cemented in popular culture, like Carrie Bradshaw’s eminently eclectic designer wardrobing on Sex and the City or Monica Geller’s considerate casualness in Friends.

Then there are the runway moments, including but not limited to Versace’s Freedom! Climax in 1991, whereby Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell closed the show dressed in monochromatic shift mini dresses and mouthing the lyrics of George Michael’s anthem, Marc Jacobs’ grunge collection for Perry Ellis in 1994 and Mugler’s haute couture cyborg suit from 1995.

On stage, there was no shortage of spotlight-stealing ensembles, including Madonna’s Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra, which she wore during her 1990 Blonde Ambition world tour, or TLC’s genre-defying and gender-bending matching streetwear.

The red carpet forays are equally momentous, like Elizabeth Hurley’s slinky safety pin dress from the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral or the chartreuse chinoiserie Dior by John Galliano gown Nicole Kidman wore to the 69th annual Academy Awards in 1997.

However, as someone whose credentials to comment on the matter include being born six months before the turn of the 21st century in the June of 1999, the most iconic ‘90s outfits aren’t the ones you’ll find on screen or played up for an audience. Instead, the decade’s biggest contributions come in a more insouciant approach, like model off-duty sightings or the days celebrities went to events without being dressed by a stylist.

To me, the most iconic ‘90s outfits stand as a time capsule. They reflect what personal style looked like without the influence of niche aesthetics, self-surveilling social media or the ability to commodify your outfit of the day through brand deals and paparazzi shots. As Cindy Crawford said during an interview meditating on her life in looks, “No one put [my outfit] together other than just what I grabbed.”

She might've been only 16 at the time, but only three years later, she would go on to wear a look that defined the '90s. Indeed, her humble slip dress was slinky, lingerie-inspired and, according to an interview she gave in 2023, unknowingly "see-through".

For the uninitiated, the former Princess of Wales wore this little black dress to a gala in Hyde Park's Serpentine Gallery on the same night the now King Charles III confessed to committing adultery during their marriage during a televised interview. This came to the forefront in 1996, when Paltrow wore a burgundy Gucci suit designed by Tom Ford to the MTV VMAs. The suit was fresh of the runway, having made its debut in the autumn/winter season that year, showcasing her know-how and ability to make effortless and well-tailored pieces covetable as far back as 30 years ago. Personally, I adore this more whimsical moment which took place in Australia in 1994. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm definitely a flat-shoe over a heel type of person. Because of this, I've never typically turned to celebrity outfits for inspiration since they often feature some style of heel, especially when it's a glamorous event. Over the last few years, however, we've seen a shift in celeb style, with comfort and practicality taking precedence. Despite their chunkier silhouette and bold-contrasting colours, fashion people continue to love them over 25 years later due to their comfort and cool factor. Wearing hers with an asymmetric draped white midi dress and matching sunglasses, Naomi Campbell shows how the Gel-Nimbus can add a cool, elevated touch to your classic summer outfits.

As a child of the '90s, I'll admit that there are many trends of that decade that I'd rather leave behind (pencil-thin eyebrows and towering Spice Girls–esque platform sneakers among them). And while I did dabble in some of the era's more questionable looks—including butterfly clips and plastic chokers—I'm convinced the decade is far chicer than we give it credit for.

There's something particularly alluring about timeless fashion. I'm always in awe of the kind of outfits you can look at and not necessarily pinpoint what year, decade, or era they're from. Made from a combination of classic items—be it straight-leg jeans, button-down shirts, chunky knitwear, or open-toe shoes—these looks rely on the forever-favourite wardrobe heroes we wear again and again, season after season. 

When it comes to celebrity style, I love stumbling across an image of someone who has been famous for years (think Jennifer Aniston or Naomi Campbell) and playing a silent, internal guessing game about when the photo was taken. For those celebrities who subscribe to a timeless aesthetic, this game can be more difficult than you'd think. But that's exactly what makes their style great.

Below, I've tracked down seven celebrity photos from the '90s and early noughties which easily look as if they could contain outfits from 2021 (face masks aside, of course). Between the high-heeled mules worn by Tracee Ellis Ross which bare an uncanny resemblance to new-season Bottega Veneta and the beaded bag carried by Cameron Diaz which is almost identical to Shrimps' current offering, keep scrolling for some throwback celebrity outfits I'd happily re-create today.

Style Notes: My obsession with Friends is well documented on this website. Though, it can predominantly be blamed on an underlying love for Jennifer Aniston's style. The woman is an icon of timeless style, so much so that it'd be difficult to even pinpoint when this image was taken. A late-'90s look that still feels relevant today? Style Notes: I wouldn't blame you if you thought Gabrielle Union's white shirt in this look was by uber-cool French designer Jacquemus. Given this look is from 2001, it would be impossible, though it is just as stylish as one of his designs. A crisp button-down and jeans is a combo celebs have been wearing for years, and we don't anticipate it stopping any time soon.

Style Notes: This 1997 Cameron Diaz look has several hallmarks of a 2021 wardrobe. Chunky grey knit? Check. Black miniskirt with side split? Check. Beaded evening bag that looks like it could have been made by Shrimps? Check!

Style Notes: If you told me this photo was taken yesterday, I would believe you. Not only because Tracee Ellis Ross has barely aged a day since this 2002 image but also because this outfit is so timeless. Pairing a roll-neck knit with a pencil skirt and Bottega Veneta-esque mules is an outfit formula that will evidently stand the test of time.

Style Notes: Young Gwyneth Paltrow wore a lot of outfits I would happily re-create, especially this one composed of a leather blazer and straight-leg jeans. It's simple, it's effortless, and, most importantly, it's classic. Bonus point for Brad Pitt, whose outfit is equally as timeless.

Style Notes: Before she was wearing white sequin trousers to landmark historical events (like the Inauguration), Jennifer Lopez was wearing tonal white outfits of a different kind. This jeans-and-knit outfit is the perfect way to weave light tones into your casual winter wardrobe.

Style Notes: It's no surprise that this outfit looks as if it could have been styled today given that is comprised of undeniably classic items. A timeless cardigan, white tank top and black trousers? It's a formula chic women wear time and time again.

London Fashion Week, much like last season, isn't quite how it was this time last year. And we honestly don't know when that will change. It's a great privilege to run around to show after show, looking at beautiful garments and spotting A-listers on the front row (and maybe even sitting next to one), and I really, really miss it. Twice a year, it's exactly like being back at school—you see friends you haven't seen in a while, you get to gossip, catch up and have a giggle. Yes, there are some ridiculous sights to see too, I won't deny that, but it's a moment in the calendar when we all get the chance to really celebrate the creativity of the fashion industry. We can take a step back and see how designers are interpreting our world right now and what they're looking at in the future. It is art, even if that art can appear silly to some.

The thing is fashion can really take your breath away. A "simple" runway can suddenly alter how everyone wants to dress. There are various moments that have occurred during the fashion month calendar that have stopped us in our tracks. Most recently, an industry friend of mine found Richard Quinn's September 2019 show so emotional she shed a few tears. There are also moments that came way before I was even a fashion journalist that have remained iconic—Naomi Campbell falling over at Vivienne Westwood to Phoebe Philo's first-ever Céline show. From Jennifer Aniston to Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Campbell to Kate Moss, the It girls of the nineties had a very particular style. Featuring round-frame sunglasses, faded blue denim, shrunken knit cardigans and of course, excessively thin eyebrows the era can often be remembered for a less is more aesthetic. Ironically, many of the decade's more minimalist trends still take up prominence in our wardrobes today and (thin eyebrows aside). I can confidently say I'd sport any of the aforementioned looks.

One other very '90s trend that has stood the test of time and maintained its popularity in our closets decades later is thin strap slip dresses. And this summer, in particular, I foresee myself living in the timeless style. Often featuring a flattering, décolletage-baring square neckline and simple bias-cut silhouette, the style is not only easy to wear, but its also versatile enough to transition across many occasions. When it comes to guilty pleasures, there are very few things we love more than scrolling through a gallery of supermodels in their '90s heyday.
