As nail trends go, few get me quite as excited as autumn's nail trends. By the time September rolls around, I'm ready to embrace all the autumn nail colours with open arms. After scrolling for manicure inspiration this month, I've begun seeing a flurry of seasonal shades on my feeds, and after saving some of my favourites, I noticed that they all have one thing in common.

Apart from being effortlessly chic, so many of the nail colour shades I saved just happened to be from Manucurist. From classic dark reds to chocolaty browns, there isn't a shade that I don't want on my nails right now. Ahead, I've shared the manicures from my saved folder and have tracked down the exact shades. 1. Hollyhock

Hollyhock is the ultimate autumn nail colour, IMO. This rich red-black looks incredibly glossy and expensive on all nail shapes and lengths, but it looks particularly striking on short squoval nails. At this time of year, I get the seasonal itch to dig out my navy nail colours, and I might just have to add Dark Night to my collection. An inky navy never misses—I consider it the dark-wash denim of manicures—and it'll go with anything whilst looking expensive and effortlessly cool.

7. Grenat

Grenat is a newer addition to Manucurist's colours. It's a rich maroon that strikes the perfect balance of brown and red. It's not quite as dark as Hollyhock, and has more of an earthy undertone that looks particularly cool for this time of the year.

If I added up how much money I've spent on back-to-back gel manicures over the years, I'd probably be able to take myself on a five-star holiday for the same amount. What can I say, I love having my nails done. That said, I'm currently saving for a wedding, and my natural nails are definitely looking (and feeling) a bit weak and discoloured as of late, so in a bid to improve both my nails and my bank balance, I cancelled my next salon appointment and bought myself a nail brightener instead.

I hadn't tried one before, but after giving this product a go, I am completely hooked. My nails have never looked so elegant and put together from an at-home polish. Below, I've rounded up my current go-to formulas, and I even spoke with nail expert and brand founder Leighton Denny MBE to learn more about what makes a nail brightener so effective.

What Is a Nail Brightener?

There are lots of nail health products on the market, from nail hardeners to nail strengtheners, but nail brighteners are a little different. "I like to think of a nail brightener as like a BB cream for the nails," says Denny. "It enhances the natural nail rather than covering it up, helping to brighten and conceal minor imperfections while giving the nails a fresh, healthy-looking glow. It’s perfect if your nails are looking a little dull or discoloured, but it’s just as much about that 'your nails but better' look."

As explained by Denny, although these products are great for concealing minor imperfections, they work for anyone and everyone. "You don’t need to have a particular nail concern to wear one," he says. "If you like that clean, polished, barely-there manicure, this is for you. For me, it’s about enhancing the natural nail rather than masking it, leaving nails looking fresh, healthy and beautifully groomed."

How to Use a Nail Brightener

The best bit? These products couldn't be easier to use. "Apply one coat as a brightening base coat under your nail colour, or build with two to three coats worn alone for an illuminated nude look," says Denny. You don’t even need a top coat.

"It’s such an easy way to make natural nails look instantly fresher and more polished, whether you want just a hint of brightness or a little more colour," Denny adds.

1. Manucurist Active Bright

This Manucurist polish is one of my holy grails. It instantly illuminates the nail with a subtle yet buildable pearlescent effect. Nails look brighter and healthier, and the formula contains lemon extract, AHAs and hexanal to strengthen and repair the natural nail. If you like a milky nail look, you will love this.

2. Leighton Denny Nail Illuminator

Speaking of milky nails, this Leighton Denny Nail Illuminator is another favourite of mine. It comes in a stylish milky white hue and acts as a base coat, polish, nail brightener and nail treatment all in one. Similar to the polish above, it has a subtle shimmer and is packed with nourishing ingredients such as vitamin E and lime tree extract. Plus, it lasts a surprisingly long time on the nail.

3. Dior Nail Glow

If I'm cancelling my nail appointment, I want my at-home manicure to feel just as luxurious, and this Dior polish always does the trick. Not only is it gorgeous to look at, but the formula adds an elegant tint to the nail, making them look brighter, shinier and more polished. It's the closest thing I've found to a salon-worthy manicure at home.

4. Nails Inc. Glow and Grow

For just under £10, this Nails Inc product really impressed me. It adds such a glossy, bright effect to the nail and can be used as a base coat or on its own, depending on your desired finish. However, it's the formula that I really love, which works to strengthen and nourish the nail thanks to a blend of hyaluronic acid and castor oil.

5. Chanel Le Vernis La Base Camélia

This Chanel nail polish is technically a base coat, but I love using it as an all-in-one product for a subtle yet sophisticated manicure. As soon as I apply it, my nails look smoother, brighter and glossier. Plus, the camellia oil coats the nail in a protective layer, so I know they are taken care of, too.

6. Manucurist Active Smooth

I know I've already talked about Manucurist, but the formulas are so good that I thought the Active Smooth polish deserved a place in this edit. It's not as brightening as Active Bright, but it's ideal for smoothing and blurring the nail, making everything look healthier and brighter overall. I like to think of this as a skin tint for your nails.

After developing a gel nail polish allergy a few years ago (a beauty editor's worst nightmare, I know, but I have found some good gel nail polish alternatives since), one thing I've really felt I've missed out on is chrome manis. The glazed nail trend hasn't gone anywhere, but to achieve the effect, it has to be used with cured gel polish for the chrome effect to work. Whilst there are tonnes of stunning shimmer nail polishes, achieving the glazed effect with nail polish just isn't quite the same, and applying the chrome powder on regular nail polish doesn't work too well in my experience.

Manucurist's Green Flash LED Kit has become one of my favourites for getting a longer-lasting manicure without gel polish (it even cures under an LED lamp), so when I saw that Manucurist also did its own chrome powders that are compatible with its Green Flash polishes, I immediately got my hands on some to try out for myself. And I wasn't disappointed.

Manucurist Glazed Powders

Coming in an array of shades, Manucurist's Glazed Powders (£9) work with its Green Flash nail polishes, which cure under Manucurist's LED lamp (£73). The result is a longer-lasting manicure without gel polish, remaining chip-free for far longer than standard nail polish.

How to Use It

I tried the White Glazed Powder, paired with Manucurist Hortencia (my favourite sheer pink polish from the brand). I applied two coats, curing in between, and then applied the powder on top with the sponge applicator.

After buffing it into the nail, I could see the chrome effect adhering to my nails, and I was so impressed with how it looked. I then used the Manucurist Dust Brush (£22) to sweep away the excess powder around the nail, and finished with the Manucurist Top Coat and cured again to seal it in.

I will say that applying the top coat did disturb the chrome slightly, but my workaround has been to apply a little more of the powder once the top coat has set, and it has held onto the glassy effect brilliantly. It has lasted really well and hasn't faded or disappeared after washing my hands—the glassy look remains.

My Verdict

There are a few different shades of the glazed powder to pick from depending on the look you're going for. The white one I used is perfect for a pearly effect, whereas Pink has more of a tint that would look beautiful over a sheer pink or milky polish. Golden has a shimmering champagne hue, and Blue has a stunning aqua-glazed finish that is really unique.

There are so many ways to use them, too, whether you wear them over a sheer polish for a glassy effect, or over a coloured opaque nail colour for a bolder effect. I'm desperate to try them on top of a soft French manicure next. Either way, I'm keeping all the shades on standby for all my chrome manicures from now on.

Double French tips have been cropping up all over my feeds this month, and it's such a fun way to switch up your standard French manicure. There are endless colour combinations to try. Brown and blue would make for a cool autumn French manicure, but I also love this pink and red combo. Opt for a fine-tipped nail art brush or a French manicure nail stamper to achieve those perfectly crisp lines.

4. Olive French

I’ve always had a soft spot for animal print and, in my wardrobe, there’s no shortage of leopard-print trousers, snakeskin-inspired boots, tortoiseshell sunglasses and even the odd zebra or cow-print handbag. And if you’re feeling a bit nervous, Streets suggests starting small. “Try an animal-print French tip or even just a few tiny spots in your print of choice layered over a neutral sheer nude or milky base,” she suggests. Choosing a tonal colour palette, think neutral shades like chocolate browns and caramels rather than high-contrast shades, can also make the trend feel more wearable.

Now and again, a nail trend comes along that is so good, it convinces me to ditch my milky manicure altogether. It's September, which means we're in that awkward phase where the end of summer blends into the start of autumn. You're not quite ready to give up the bright, playful pedicure colours that have carried you through summer, but suddenly reaching for a neon pink or tropical coral doesn't feel quite right either. Peach might traditionally be associated with summer, but a glossy, pared-back version feels surprisingly appropriate for September. The result is almost like a sheer wash of peach on the nails, with plenty of glossy shine. 2. Cherry Red

If there's one pedicure colour that can carry you seamlessly from summer into autumn, it's cherry red. Richer and slightly moodier than the bright tomato red that trended this summer, this is the shade to choose when you want something classic but with a little more impact. Think glossy, lacquer-like finishes rather than anything too dark or burgundy.

Fortunately, this year's September nail trends offer plenty of middle ground. “September is always an interesting month for nails because we're transitioning from summer into autumn, so clients tend to want colours that feel richer without going completely dark,” says nail artist Ashleigh Bamber. “I think we're going to see a lot of glossy finishes and saturated shades that still have a bit of brightness to them.”

And she isn't wrong. From gemstone-inspired jewel tones and deep, almost-black cherry to unexpected pops of sunny yellow and juicy peach, this month's standout shades are anything but one-note. “There’s definitely a move towards colours that feel really unique and intentional,” Bamber says. “Whether that’s a rich chocolate brown or a bold yellow, people are being a little more adventurous with colour whilst still keeping the overall manicure polished.” Below, I've rounded up the six September nail colours that I predict will be everywhere this month.

1. Jewel Tones

Think emerald green, sapphire blue, amethyst purple and rich ruby red—colours that feel saturated and expensive without automatically reading as festive. “Jewel tones are such a great way to add depth to your manicure,” says Bamber. “They feel bold, but because they're inspired by colours you'd naturally see in nature, they still look really sophisticated.” Keep things simple with one shade across every nail, or lean into the trend with a subtle magnetic or high-shine finish to really bring out the dimension.

2. Deep Cherry

A classic red manicure will never go out of style, but September is the ideal time to take things a little darker. Deep cherry sits somewhere between a true red and a rich burgundy, making it a particularly good option if you're not quite ready to go full wine or oxblood. “I love deep cherry because it can look almost black in some lights and then reveals that beautiful red tone,” says Bamber. The key is to keep the finish incredibly glossy, which gives the shade that almost lacquered, glass-like effect. Wear it on short, neat nails for something timeless, or on an almond shape for a slightly more dramatic look.

Chocolate brown has already proved itself to be one of 2026's biggest nail colours, and I don't see that changing any time soon—in fact, I think it's perfect for autumn. And, as an added bonus, it works beautifully across every nail length and shape. “Chocolate brown is such an easy colour to wear because it still acts almost like a neutral,” says Bamber. “It looks great on its own, but you can also use it for French tips or pair it with a sheer base.” My preferred way to wear it? Short, rounded nails and an ultra-glossy top coat.

6. Khaki Green

If bright summer greens feel a little too playful for September but you're not quite ready for a deep forest shade, khaki is the answer. Earthy, muted, and surprisingly versatile, it brings something a little different to the usual rotation of reds, browns and berry tones. “Khaki green is a really nice transitional shade because it has that earthy autumn feel without being too dark,” says Bamber. “It also looks amazing with a shimmer finish, which keeps it feeling modern.”

I can't quite believe it, but I'm actually wearing a jumper today as I sit at my desk and write this article. It was even raining this morning on my way into work, which means I'm certainly feeling all of the autumnal vibes. It makes total sense then that I'm here to talk about this autumn's biggest nail trends.

After reaching out to Metta Francis, London-based manicurist and founder of Nails by Mets, I got the full lowdown on the upcoming season's biggest looks, and there are plenty of new manicures to try. First up, this dreamy midnight blue nail polish colour. "Almost black but not quite, midnight blue looks and feels luxurious and chic," explains Francis. "An easy-to-wear autumn shade, don’t be afraid to have some fun with this mysterious hue". Francis suggests trying midnight blue French tips on longer nails, or even a midnight blue half-moon design for those of you with shorter nails.

Metallics are big news this season, especially when it comes to gold manicures. Francis tells me that everything from full-coverage gold nails to gilded gold tips and accent gold nail art will be popular. As explained by Francis, this trend leans into short, naturally shaped, low-maintenance nails. "[You can use] a natural colour to enhance the natural nail but with a matte finish for a true 'barely there' look," she says. "Essie’s To The Rescue is the perfect product for this, and also helps to strengthen and revitalise damaged nails."

How stunning is this rich plum colour? "An alternative to the classic burgundy, rich, deep, jewel-toned plums are the perfect shades to welcome the colder months," says Francis. "A staple autumnal hue that will work from day to night."

Ok, this is a trend that I've actually spotted myself, and I have a feeling it's going to be big this autumn. Whilst chocolate brown nail polishes were all the rage this time last year, it seems that chocolate brown nail art is the way to go this season. Whether you like polka dots, floral nail art, French tips or more, there are so many ways to wear this trend.

6. Unexpected Lilac

A rather unexpected one for the autumn months, but super chic nonetheless. "Predominantly popular in spring, lilac is having an autumnal moment," says Francis. However, for the autumn months, Francis tells me that this shade is more muted and reminiscent of cosy knits. I think I will definitely have to give this a go.

I actually picked it up at the start of summer when I was browsing in my local drugstore, and I've been dying to wear it now that we're heading into the autumn months.

This easily one of my favourite Essie nail polish shades. Caviar Bar is a deep, rich navy hue that leaves your nails looking inky and dark, alongside the most incredible plumped and glossy finish that genuinely does look like gel polish at first glance. However, no gel lamp is required with this. You simply apply two coats, then finish with the top coat (which is one of the best I've ever tried). I particularly love this shade on short nails, and it has a certain Parisian mood to it.

Essie recommends topping up the top coat on day seven; however, I like to top up every few days to really make the polish last. With this method (and as long as I'm not being too heavy-handed!) I can usually get my manicure to last around 10 days without major signs of chipping. Of course, with this being a darker nail colour, the chips were more obvious than they would be with a sheer or light pink shade. Nonetheless, I love this shade and the result. It's the ultimate navy nail shade for this time of the year to welcome in the new season.

Created by nail artist Mateja Novakovic, this iridescent manicure has the most elegant, creamy white base. Paired with the pearly finish, it's quite possibly the most perfect summery take on one of my favourite neutral nail looks.

Whilst I'll definitely be asking for this on my next trip to the salon, the great news is that the aqua-glazed nail trend is so easy to recreate from home. In fact, Novakovic herself used the Manucurist Active Plump Aqua Glazed polish to create this look, applying two layers for a more opaque finish.

Not only does this polish look chic, but it also cares for your nails. The formula is infused with collagen to create a plump, hydrated effect. Plus, the pearly finish is inspired by marine reflections (hence the aqua name). I plan on using this product for the entirety of August, and if you ask me, it will also make a great pedicure shade, too...
