Winter officially started a few days ago, but it's felt like winter in much of the country for more than a month at this point. And for many, that means one thing: Uggs. I've been discussing one pair, in particular, for many weeks already, and if you're a fan of The Row, it's the perfect style for you. Pretty as they are, I've been wearing them relentlessly for months now and I'm concerned that my style is becoming a bit too predictable because of it. That said, after growing so used to the ease of a flat shoe, I’m also not ready to teeter around in stilettos and I'm currently finding that prospect daunting when I think about all of the occasions filling up my calendar this summer. It’s a truth widely acknowledged that not all jeans and shoe combinations are created equal.

We all know that a change in seasons means an automatic shift into different styles of footwear, but there’s one trending shoe on the rise that many fashion insiders wouldn’t have predicted: Rothy’s Casual Clog.

Style Notes: You can always expect to get tons of style inspiration from Scandi women, but the one thing I didn't see coming was a heel. Given just how reliant cities like Copenhagen are on cycling for transport, flat shoes tend to reign supreme, but these season has introduced the court shoe 2.0, a sculptural spin on the classic with a softer silhouette and often a statement heel that doesn't need to be sky high to get the attention that it deserves. Style Notes: The French have a penchant for reworking classics to make them feel new again, and mules are back on the agenda for a chilly spring with some sunshine promise. There's no need for bells and whistles when a pared-back and minimalist mule is all an outfit needs to look polished, and according to Parisians, a pointy toe is best worn with midi skirts or slip dresses and a longline coat for an easy outfit with a little je ne sais quoi.

Style Notes: Who could have predicted that the return of the slingback would cause such a stir that near on three years later we would still be discussing them at length? Well, we could actually. Not only does this eternally chic shoe look great with just about anything, but the popular kitten heel height is easy enough for all-day wear too. Spanish dressers have picked up on the power of a patent slingback in particular given just how great they look with tights during the cooler months, and there's something in this classy, "office siren" pairing that we expect to see much more of in A/W '25.

Style Notes: Mesh flats may have been the look du jour in 2024, but for 2025, I've noticed a uptake in the amount of embellished ballet pumps making their way onto the market. Dressy by day, and perfect for comfortably chic evenings, keep an eye out for studs, sparkle, and chunky adornments over the coming months, this elevated shoe is sticking around for another season and I couldn't be happier.

6. The Trend: Barely-There Sandals

The Location: Helsinki

Style Notes: A genius styling trick straight from Finland, take your summer sandal and make them winter-appropriate by adding a statement pair of tights. Chic, no? Anything that get more longevity out of the barely-there sandal has to be a good thing, not only do these heels never date, but their minimalist nature means you can wear them with just about anything (Milla's look being a case in point). Style Notes: Londoners know their way around a good trainer trend, and the genius of this style in particular is that is combines cool-girl kicks with undoubtedly the biggest trend to come out of winter 2024: luxe suede. I challenge you to find a trainer that looks more expensive than these, particularly in chocolate brown, and when your favourite pair of white leather sneakers just isn't cutting it, this is the alternative style that women in the capital are wearing in droves right now, particularly with a matching tote.

As an editor who loves to find a special high street buy, my morning routine has adapted to include scanning our favourite stores for new-in finds. With my coffee, I explore the fresh influx of styles from the brands that do it best, and this morning I came across a pair of designer-passing mules that I simply had to share. Just in time for party season, H&M has created a pair of eye-catching mules that feature a satin-like finish and have seriously designer details. I've noticed a decidedly chic common thread running through the wardrobes of Margot Robbie, Laura Harrier, and the chicest French women I follow. Dressing for the new-found sun, these stylish women have ascended the fashion ranks by elevating their footwear collection with a lesser-known shoe trend that I predict will start catching on very soon.

Instead of the trending sandal styles I'm seeing all around me, I'm following suit and turning my attention to the under-the-radar ballet mules trend this summer.

Pioneering the mule shoe style in the early '90s, Manolo Blahnik's Maysale shoes set the stage for the trend. With a small heel, pointed-toe design and easy slip-on silhouette, the iconic shoe quickly ascended to cult-buy status, paving the way for mules to become what we know them as today.

Now, many seasons on, the humble mule has been treated to a flat-footed makeover and a ballet-inspired re-design. After the roaring success of the ballet flat trend last summer, the hybrid ballet mule takes the best of both styles to create a fresh silhouette that makes chic heatwave dressing a breeze.

If there was one major fashion trend that we didn't see coming this year, it would undoubtedly have to be the return of the denim skirt. Every season, Net-a-Porter presents its trend predictions for the upcoming season, revealing to editors the items it'll be backing in six months' time. Elizabeth von der Goltz, the e-tailer's global buying director, revealed that it has already sold almost 11,000 pairs of "naked" sandals this year. It's a trend that keeps getting bigger and bigger, following the success of The Row's bare sandals, but Elizabeth revealed that there's another shoe trend that's poised to be just as popular. Enter: the square toe.

This detail is featuring across all styles of shoes, from sandals to mules to boots, and there are a number of designers leading this silhouette. The general consensus in fashion crowds is that Bottega Veneta is having a big moment this season with its boxy leather mules with a defined square toe, but this trend is also being propelled by a number of smaller Instagram-born brands. BY FAR has for several seasons now created strappy sandals with an angular cut-off front, and Wandler launched mules with and open square toe earlier this year. Of course, it’s not just sandals that have been given the square-toe treatment, ankle boots are also available for the colder months too.

The idea of capsule collections and wardrobe staples is always at the forefront of our minds. The Who What Wear team is constantly calling into question how we shop and why we buy the things we do in order to reconcile our love of style with concerns over sustainability.

One of the main ways we have been doing this is by taking a serious look at the pieces that work the hardest in our wardrobes. While I am notorious for being a jacket hoarder, for some reason, I've never really caught the shoe bug (I'll leave that to our Editor in Chief Hannah Almassi), and this has meant that my specifications have been primarily practical. I've always needed every pair to be all of the following: comfortable, low-maintenance, versatile and, of course, stylish.

Mr Blahnik's shoes have always been at the top of the fashion tree, but a few years ago, I wrote about a very noticeable, Instagram-driven resurgence for the iconic jewel-encrusted Hangisi courts and mules. A new generation of girls has discovered the beautiful craftsmanship and the of-the-moment stiletto silhouettes this maestro is famous for. Once again, the wheels are set backwards for a comeback to end all comebacks.

Since that point, the Spanish shoemaker's creations have (praise the fashion gods) been slightly easier to get hold of thanks to an increase in online stockists. The kudos of Manolo—a man whose heels are adored in both real fashion circles (Anna Wintour) and fictional ones (Carrie Bradshaw)—has been appreciated in even more exclusive circles thanks to ingenious collaborations with Rihanna and Vetements.

And now it's the turn of another signature design to take to the spotlight: the Maysale. First introduced 27 years ago and relaunched last spring/summer, the Maysale has once again become the most popular kitten heel on the block. Pernille Teisbaek and Shini Park were some of the first to wear the buckle-fronted five-centimetre stiletto mule, establishing a more modern, casual approach to the '90s cult classic via their use of denim, shirting and simple midi dresses. Many hawk-eyed girls followed suit, not to mention other brands and retailers producing imitations.

Fast-forward a year, and the appeal is nowhere near fading for the rebooted original. Accessories gurus Anna Vitiello and Florrie Thomas of And Finally agree, captioning an Instagram post of traffic light–coloured versions: "The Maysale are making a comeback (and they're even better than ever)."

"We introduced the Manolo Maysale for A/W 17, and it was an instant hit with our customers—it was online and in store for less than one day before it sold out!" Ida Petersson, womenswear buying director for Browns Fashion tells me. "Since then, we've placed several reorders and added new colours to our edit, which have performed extremely well—the red suede was the star of S/S 18. Our customers seem to have fallen in love with this style, and they just keep coming back for more. Part of its appeal is the chic silhouette; it elongates the leg, but it's the heel height that really makes it. Mules are not always the easiest to walk in, but this kitten heel ensures that you can walk for hours without suffering from those toe cramps that most mule lovers will know and dread," says Petersson.

Considering many of our shopping justification comes from staying power and strong cost-per-wear, we can't think of a better pair of shoes to invest in than those that are still just as relevant and well-made almost 30 years after they were first created.

As I explained recently, I spent seven years of my career as an assistant in the entertainment and fashion industries, and I did so with a variety of tried-and-true wardrobe staples and go-to outfits. But the element of my assistant wardrobe that basically influenced how my day was going to go (seriously) was my choice of footwear, and it's something that I admittedly struggled with from time to time. I'm not one for "practical" shoes, but having functional footwear that didn't hold me back when scurrying all over the office (or town, in many cases) was crucial. It was something I learned the hard way—a few times.

Those seven years were a learning experience in more ways than one, but one of my biggest sartorial takeaways was a capsule wardrobe of six work shoe styles that I couldn't live without. Bear in mind that my assistant positions took place in creative office environments, so some of these styles (ahem, polished trainers) may not work in a more conservative workplace, but most of them definitely will.

Below, find out which shoe styles got me through those seven years as an assistant, and shop my current picks for each.

Loafers

Loafers were my flat shoes of choice when living my best assistant life. They're versatile, classic and structured enough to pull any look together.

Block-Heel Mules

While it may have been tempting, I didn't wear flats every day. And often, the heels I reached for were of the block-heel mule variety, which provides comfort, convenience and plenty of low-key style.

Low-Heel Ankle Boots

Low-heel ankle boots were my go-to shoe style in autumn and winter, as they're walkable and work with everything from cropped jeans to midi dresses.

Polished Sneakers

For casual Fridays and those days when I spent all day running around town, you could often find me wearing sneakers, but I stuck to polished leather styles.

Classic Pumps

Since not every day involved running around, the other heels I relied on were pumps. They instantly made me feel more dressed up, even when I was just wearing jeans. (Disclaimer: I always kept a pair of flat shoes in my car or tote, just in case.)

Pointed-Toe Ballet Flats

Speaking of which, my other style of choice was pointed-toe ballet flats. When flat shoes were in order (as they often were), they kept my outfits from erring on the side of sloppy.

Even if you're not an assistant, I highly recommend owning these six styles for work (or just life).

With New York Fashion Week on the horizon, we're currently on high alert for potential It items. Every season has a few, and in recent years, at least one of them is inevitably a pair of Gucci shoes, all starting with its fur-lined Princetown slippers.

As you know, recent years have seen the rise of two equally effortless shoe styles: mules and pool slides, both of which Gucci fully embraced. So it should come as no surprise that the brand finally opted to combine the two trends into one shoe, which we're going to go ahead and call mulides (sorry, we couldn't resist).

The mulides, which vaguely resemble Birkenstock clogs, are actually called River mules, and we're confidently predicting that due to the popularity of the shoe trends they're inspired by, they could very well be spring's new Gucci It shoes. Get your pair below!
