One thing about getting dressed in England? It's almost always jeans weather. Sure, during a heatwave you might momentarily leave your denim tucked away, and in the depths of winter you may find yourself reaching for wool trousers instead. Style Notes: Stepping out in what might be my favourite denim outfit of the summer so far, Kendall Jenner swapped last season's horseshoe jeans for a sleeker pair of straight-leg stovepipes. Style Notes: Building on last year's baggy jeans trend, this season's coolest jeans come finished with a nonchalant cuffed hem. 3. Washed Black Jeans + Block Heels

Style Notes: Not blue and not white, washed black jeans are instead becoming one of the chicest denim choices of the season. Slightly dressier than your go-to blue or white pairs, the deeper tone gives outfits a more elevated feel. Case in point: Katie Holmes styled hers with a pair of block heels. More understated than stilettos but just as sophisticated, this two-piece combination is the chicest way to do dressed-up denim right now.

A few years ago, even the slightest whisper of the word “peplum” would’ve sparked such ire and condemnation that you would’ve believed the polarising hemline was the most maligned fashion trend to exist. Fast forward a bit, and peplum tops are jackets are being peppered back into the wardrobes of the most tasteful, courtesy of intriguing denim options from Agolde, sculptural styles from Alaia and dreamy iterations from Dior.

Though the trend will always have connotations with the everyday business casual aesthetic that reigned in 2010—especially given the fact they’ve been enshrined in history through pop culture monoliths from the decade like Lena Dunham’s Girls—the protruding shape has appeared to shed its harshest critics and naysayers. Now, peplum tops seem to have done the unthinkable and united both Gen Z and Millennial tastemakers in their unified appreciation for the silhouette.

Or, at least that was the case overnight in New York when both Taylor Swift and Millie Bobby Brown stepped out in the city, albeit for separate occasions, wearing the style. Though falling on either side of the sartorial spectrum—Swift is far more classic and preppy compared to the Stranger Things star’s penchant for ‘90s references and casual loungewear—who would’ve thought it would take something so controversial and dated to bring together two vastly different approaches to dressing?

For her part, the Life of a Showgirl singer remained true to her roster of favourites. The specific peplum top she wore came courtesy of Stella McCartney’s spring/summer 2026 collection and is made of a wafty cotton-poplin fabric. She styled it with a Fendi Peekaboo ISeeU Petite, straight-leg trousers from The Row and her signature Cartier Santos watch.

Cerebral, classic and certainly more fitting for her The Tortured Poets Department era, the look was the latest in a slew of public outings she’s been making recently as she soft-launches her bridal wardrobe.

Elsewhere, across town, the Enola Holmes actress cut an equally architectural figure in a peplum-cropped trench coat from Stockholm-based brand Arakii. She paired her look with white lace-up pumps from Jimmy Choo and stovepipe jeans.

Interestingly, the 22-year-old also spent the previous evening reviving the ultra-cropped bolero jacket, pairing it with a corset top and peep-toe heels like it was 2002 again for an event with Netflix.

These sightings are proof that Millennials and Gen Z need not let the discourse divide them. Because if they can both agree that peplum tops are a winning fashion trend and find common ground in comfort shows like The Hills and The O.C., why let disagreement on punctuation use and correct sock length get between?

I don't think I break any. I could not bear going to sleep with my makeup on, or even just an ounce of it. I cannot bear it. I don't actually know if I break any—boring!

Let me think... Okay, this is something that I definitely do. Because I have long nails, when I do my eyeliner, I get my long nail at the end and I pull it and it makes it sharp. That's the only way I can do a sharp wing.

How would you describe your relationship with beauty?

My relationship with beauty is always evolving. I do believe true beauty comes from within and is reflected in how you treat people. I use beauty products as a way to express myself and make myself feel good!

If you had to leave the house in five minutes, what products would you use?

After my face is washed, toned and moisturised, I would apply SPF and then refresh my skin with my Zero Chill Face Mist (£10) from Florence by Mills. I would then apply a tinted lip balm (£13), Cheek Me Later Cream Blush in Shy Shi (£14) on my cheeks and Built to Lash Mascara (£14). On my way out, I would spray a perfume—whatever fragrance matches my mood for that day!

Are you a bath or shower person? If we looked in your bath or shower right now, what products would we find?

I always prefer a bath. I find them so relaxing and valuable for my own self-care. My bath is full of body scrubs and bath oils, and everything always has a hint of lavender.

Can you talk us through your skin routine, both morning and night?

I try to keep my routine simple in the morning. I cleanse my skin with the Florence by Mills Clean Magic Face Wash (£12) and follow up that with one of the toners from the Spotlight Toner Series. I pick one based on how my skin is feeling and what it needs at the time. I always apply the Look Alive Eye Balm (£16), and then I finish with the Dreamy Dew Moisturiser (£14) so that I can run out the door with my skin prepped for set. If I’m extra tired, I sometimes even wear the Swimming Under the Eyes Gel Pads (£34) on my way to set to help brighten my under-eyes and look a little more awake.

At night, I like to use my skincare routine as a time to wind down and relax, so I add a few more steps. After I take a bath with my many lavender oils, I put on a headband and double-cleanse with the Magic Micellar Cleansing Gel (£10) and the Clean Magic Face Wash. Then I use the toner that best fits my skin’s needs for the night. After my skin is all clean, I move on to a face mask. I love doing face masks because they give me 10 minutes when I have no choice but to stay relatively still and calm. Currently, I am using the Berry in Love Pore Mask (£19) to help refine my pores since it has been really hot and humid here. After I mask, I move on to hydration, which is my favourite skincare step. Three times a week, I give my face some extra love by using the Hit Reset Moisturising Mask Pearls (£34). Sometimes I like to work it in using a jade roller or gua sha for a little facial massage. After I finish up with the Hit Snooze Lip Mask (£16), I’ll put on a cute sleep mask and call it a night!

What’s been the best piece of skincare advice that you’ve ever received?

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! You’re never too young to be lathering up on moisturiser or even using eye cream as a young person. Hydrated skin keeps your skin looking radiant and feeling soft. Oh, another tip is that no matter how tired you are, always take your makeup off before bed!

Let’s talk about Florence by Mills. What made you want to launch your own beauty brand back in 2019, and were you prepared for such a positive response from consumers?

When we started the process of launching Florence, it all stemmed from not being able to find products that were clean, affordable and fun to use. I felt like there was a big gap in the market for clean products made specifically for my age group who were just starting to explore skincare and makeup products for the first time. Of course, I was hoping for a positive response, but I’ve been truly blown away. I never could have dreamed that we’d be where we are today, and there is still so much more to accomplish! I’m really grateful for the entire Florence family and the continued support they show us with each new launch.

What’s coming up for Florence by Mills for the rest of the year?

We are over halfway through 2021, but there are still some big surprises coming! You can expect two new products in an entirely new category from Florence in just a few months!

Has anything about your approach to beauty changed over the past 18 months, and are there any particular beauty looks that you’re looking forward to trying now that we’re emerging from lockdown?

I spent a lot of time playing with bold eye looks and experimenting with colour while at home in lockdown. Spending more time at home really just made me realise how much I love expressing myself and my creativity through makeup and beauty.

We have to talk about Stranger Things because it truly is a cultural phenomenon. We really saw some fun fashion and makeup moments from Eleven in the last season. Have you taken any beauty or wardrobe inspiration from the show into your real life?

I’m sure I have subconsciously over the last few years! I loved how fun and colourful Eleven’s wardrobe was last season.

You must spend a fair amount of time on set with makeup artists and hairstylists. Are there any insider beauty secrets that you’ve picked up from the experts?

Makeup and skincare are so interlinked. If your skin is dehydrated, then your makeup will not look as good as it would if you took the time to properly cleanse and moisturise it.

Are there any other women whose beauty looks particularly inspire you, and where do you look for personal beauty and fashion inspiration?

Zendaya is someone I admire across fashion and beauty. She’s daring and experimental in a really exciting way.

Wellness and beauty are so intertwined. Do you have any wellness practices or supplements that help to give you a boost both mentally and physically?

I really value meditation and yoga. I use it as a time to center myself and slow down my thoughts. Like I said at the beginning of this interview, I really believe that beauty is what’s on the inside and taking care of your mind is just as important—really, more important—than taking care of your skin.

Finally, what’s your Unfiltered beauty philosophy in seven words or fewer?

Be kind, and don’t forget to hydrate!

Wearing a bright, colour-blocked hoodie with dinosaur spikes running down the sleeves and her hair tied back in a loose bun, Millie Bobby Brown pulls out her phone to show me a sneak peek of her Who What Wear cover shoot. "This is my favorite look,” she tells me of the image, in which she is perched on a low-slung tree branch in an ethereal Brock Collection dress and lace-up Ariat boots. This particular shoot is a special one for the young star, who enlisted the help of her older brother, Charlie, to photograph it. The two settled on the beautiful grounds just outside their family home in Atlanta, Georgia, to serve as the backdrop. For Brown, work and play are often a family affair. In the span of our 30-minute Zoom interview, she was flanked by her brother and their rambunctious golden retriever pup Leo (one of the household’s six dogs), while her best friend Gianna casually popped in and out of the room. It’s controlled chaos, but I get the sense she likes it this way. 

Since bursting into our homes at the mere age of 10 with her electric performance as Eleven in the Netflix series Stranger Things, Brown has been "go, go, go,” juggling rapid fame with the trials and tribulations of adolescence and a bustling Hollywood career—all while winning us over with her cheerful personality and fashion proclivities. (A personal favorite of mine is the custom pink ruffled Rodarte number she wore to the ST season-three premiere.) Hyperspeed is a comfortable pace for the now 16-year-old, and with no plans of slowing down anytime soon, she is ready to take on more.

This month, Brown is teaming with Netflix to bring audiences Enola Holmes, a project that sees her both in front of the camera in the titular role and behind the scenes serving as one of the film’s producers, a career first for the star. "I wanted to be a part of the casting process, I wanted to be a part of the writing process, and I definitely wanted to be a part of the layout of the whole production,” she says of some of the new responsibilities she took on. You could say Enola Holmes is Brown’s baby, in a way. She was struck by the character, the precocious younger sister of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, when reading the Nancy Springer book series at the age of 13. "When I was younger and lived in London, I felt as though I could never connect with a lead British female. When I read this book, I genuinely felt like I had found someone just like me. My sister and I both fell in love with Enola and everything about her. We thought, ‘This needs to be seen.’” So Brown, with a strong vision and understanding of what young audiences want, went to Legendary Entertainment and made it happen. The project would later find its perfect home with Netflix.

With all the makings of an entertaining mystery film—adventure, suspense, misdirection—and the welcome addition of female empowerment, Enola Holmes is a fantastic watch. Brown shines as Holmes and is almost unrecognizable with her long, wavy hair and fitted-bodice dresses, a far cry from Eleven’s ’80s tomboy look. When I ask how she and Holmes might be similar, she laughs and tells me they both are quite nosy—a product, she goes on to say, of always wanting to be in the know and wearing her heart on her sleeve. She also says they are both unapologetically authentic. "We are only ourselves for the rest of our lives, so I just accept the fact that I am who I am and don’t need anyone to rely on.”

Brown may have found independence at a young age, but her close-knit family continues to be her North Star. "[My family] are my best friends,” she says. "Those are the people I talk to every day, that I see every day, and who I love collaborating with because they know me and will be honest with me.” Some of Brown’s most gratifying work has been in partnership with her siblings. She hints at an exciting project she and her brother have in the works, though is mum on any details. She and her sister, Paige, are currently developing and producing a film called A Time Lost, which they hold close to their hearts after writing the script based on a dear friend’s battle with cancer. "We always said her story was so special,” Brown shares. "She was a warrior in so many ways. It’s something that touches everyone and happens in so many families, so I feel [it’s a story] that could maybe help people grieving or speak to people who just want to hear stories that are real and genuine.”

When it came down to who would produce the story with the two sisters, there was only one answer: Netflix. "I knew I wanted to go to Netflix because I knew my story would be told, and in the right way,” Brown says. The mega streamer has been a supporter of her career since the beginning, with a key component of their relationship being Netflix’s respect for her not only as a young person but also as a young woman. The people she works with there encourage her to voice her opinions and write her own stories because they know as well as any of us that Brown is the future of Hollywood.

The entertainment industry is slowly but surely taking steps toward a more inclusive future, inviting more BIPOC, female, and young voices to have a seat at the table. Major networks and streamers are signing deals with young talent to develop original content (most recently, ABC Studios with Yara Shahidi and Hulu with Joey King). Brown is one of the youngest executive producers alongside Marsai Martin. With these fresh voices at the forefront come a fresh perspective and new coming-of-age stories reaching a large corner of the market looking to see themselves represented on screen.

"We are so used to a male-dominated industry, and so having women involved, young women, young people involved, I think we can all work together equally. I believe [that] with equality in this industry, we can make beautiful art,” says Brown. "We can do what we all want to do, which is this craft, and we can do it together. It’s important to have this seat at the table, to be heard, because not only are we young, but we [also] have a lot to say, and we have stories that want to be told. If that’s respected, looked at, and taken seriously, we can do so many things. With Enola, I was producing and also starred in it, and there were men involved in the production of things and plenty of women involved in the production of things. It was such a great collaborative effort and a great example of what Hollywood can look like.”

But Brown isn’t just aiming to make Hollywood a better place—she’s also working toward social change in other spaces. Influence is something Brown has in spades. She is the youngest person to be featured on the Time 100 list of the World’s Most Influential People, and her Instagram account alone reaches over 34 million users worldwide. Understanding the weight of her platform, Brown uses it to speak to causes close to her heart. For instance, she partnered with UNICEF to ensure young people across the globe have access to education. This is an important step, she believes, in giving today’s adolescents an impactful voice for the future. She’s also dedicated to making social media a safer place. "I personally have suffered greatly from cyberbullying,” she tells me, recalling one instance last year when fans were "greatly affected” by her decision to wear a Louis Vuitton coatdress and trousers. "I think [social media] is a place of harassment and negativity. When people go on to my Instagram page, I want them to see someone who is real, who is authentically being themselves, and who is positive and happy.”

Being authentically herself—whether fumbling through an Addison Rae TikTok dance (who else can relate?) or seamlessly toggling between fancy frocks and sleek, tailored moments on the red carpet—is something Brown has mastered over time. She is self-assured beyond her years and the kind of person we need in the driver’s seat for the next generation.

Before our Zoom chat comes to end, I ask Brown one final question about her predictions for the future of Hollywood and where she sees the industry going. A big smile appears on her face as she says, "I hope in a few years, we get to a point where we all just genuinely want to work together, and that comes with a lot of people listening. So as long as that is happening, hopefully, we will be in good shape.” With Brown starting to call the shots, I think we’re well on our way.

Unless you've been hiding under a rock or (or in soundproof underground room without a Wi-Fi connection), there's no way that you escaped the news about Stranger Things. The sci-fi Netflix show has been one of the biggest series in recent history and has made stars of all the young actors who appear in it—especially Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the role of Eleven. While everyone has been preoccupied with Eleven's onscreen look (the character was one of the most popular Halloween costumes for 2016 and 2017), right now we're all about the actress's personal style.

As well as gracing plenty of front rows during fashion week (always an indicator of a fashion star in the making), the actress has kept her ensembles not too grown-up (she is only 14, after all) with a few quirky twists. She's also not afraid to take risks with colour and patterns, and she always keeps it fun—take a look her Instagram for a host of examples.
