Long before trends blow up online, they'll be spotted in the streets of Milan. We'd go so far as to state that some of the best street style looks during fashion month come from Milan, not Paris. (Sorry, Francophiles.)

1. Corporate Geeks

Unless you've been living off the grid, chances are you've already seen the geek chic and office siren aesthetics at some point. What you might not know is that these two trends were first brought to fruition by Italian brands such as Miu Miu and Gucci. Considering these trends' origins, it's only fitting to see the Milanese style set give its signature spin to them this season by pairing them together. No workwear staple was off-limits when it came to making them a little weirder (in a good way). Preppy pleated skirts were paired with menswear ties and Maison Margiela Tabi flats. Grey suits were made a bit sultrier with low-cut blouses and Bayonetta-style eyewear. Each street style look proved that being an office geek can look good if you get your styling notes from the Milanese.

2. Wine, Per Favore!

While Milan may not be the gastronomic region known for winemaking, that didn't stop the style set from wearing varying shades of wine. Although one might assume that this colour trend can be traced to the cultural love of wine within Italy's borders, that's not entirely the case. We first saw merlot, bordeaux, and even eggplant surface last spring when fashion houses showed their autumn collections—specifically Gucci, Versace, and Bottega Veneta. Since then, we've seen the shade splash off the runway and into the streets, and it was seemingly the colour of choice to wear to the spring/summer 2025 runway shows. We saw this shade styled in every form, from sculpted blazes to sultry blouses to shiny patent-leather slingbacks. No matter how the Milanese chose to wear this colour this season, it left us wanting to ask for another glass of wine.

3. Bling-Bling

You don't have to be steeped in fashion history to know that some of the most famous Italian fashion houses (e.g., Versace and Gucci) are known for their bold and often bling-forward approach to design. Therefore, it's unsurprising that we saw the Milanese style set take a similar approach to accessorising this season. Leaning fully into maximalist territory, looks featured a ton of oversize jewellery, and often, bigger pieces were styled together. It was as if the assignment was to make sure every surface on the body had something shiny on it. Chunky silver and gold necklaces were worn together, mismatched bangles were stacked to the brim, and even ponytails were adorned with metal hair ties. Whatever the definition of "bling-bling" was before, the street style looks from Milan this season changed the term's meaning.

4. Dramatic Necklines

One thing you have to give to Italian women is that they're così elegante. Case in point: the wide adoption of dramatic necklines this season. It wasn't that we saw one specific neckline reign supreme on the streets of Milan this season. It was all about embracing more sophisticated silhouettes altogether. Clearly, the Milanese had screenshots of Bottega Veneta's, Fendi's, and Prada's F/W 24 collections saved on their phones, as we saw them shuffle around the city with every type of statement neckline imaginable—from crisp white blouses with rolled-collar necklines to nipped-waist blazers with funnel necks to bright-orange mohair capes. Whether the neckline erred on the relaxed side or was more structured, the drama of each look was undeniable.

5. Over-the-Knee Boots

Let's be honest. No shoe trend is genuinely trending until it's been worn in a few different cities. Sure, we love cool shoes just as much as the next person, but are they worth it if you can't walk on a cobblestone street to the closest café in them? Probably not. Based on the street style images from Milan Fashion Week, we can safely say that over-the-knee boots will be one of autumn's biggest footwear trends. While we'll admit that this taller shape can be tricky to style, the Milanese made it look effortless. Often, we saw the style set take cues from Fendi's F/W 24 runway collection by pairing their over-the-knee boots with sweater dresses, tailored pencil skirts, and wrap dresses. It was a master class on removing the melodrama of adopting one of the more difficult autumn boot trends.

6. Bag Charms' Comeback

The last noteworthy street style trend from Milan Fashion Week may seem small, but it's made huge waves in the fashion world lately ICYMI, the comeback tour for bag charms has fully commenced! While this micro-accessory has been around for a while, its resurgence can be traced to when Miu Miu debuted its overstuffed Beau Bag covered in charms during its S/S 24 runway show. Since then, we've seen the accessory trend take over social media, as many users on TikTok have referred to the trend as Jane Birkin–ifying their bags. It's not just online where we've seen the buzz around bag charms again, as the trend was also spotted during Milan Fashion Week. There were so many examples of Italian editors, buyers, stylists, and influencers personalizing their luxury handbags by adding charms, jewelry, keychains, and scarves. Although it's such a small accessory, its outsized presence reminded us of the importance of personal style. It's easy to get wrapped up in every single trend, but the Milanese have learned to make even the biggest trends feel signature to them—something we can all aspire to achieve one day.

Ciao, friends! For the past five days, I have been immersed in the world of Italian fashion, seeing the S/S 25 collections up close and personal from the runways, showrooms and appointments of Milan Fashion Week. Craftspersonship and glamour are always top of the agenda in the Italian capital; I never tire of seeing really beautifully made clothes, bags and shoes, and no other fashion hub does quiet luxury quite like it.

Many of us view this movement as an ongoing trend, but quiet luxury has long been the cornerstone of Italian style. Glance at any of the locals (not on their way to the shows) and it's plain to see: they invest in high-quality goods that are classic and made to last. People accessorise and add personality to these elevated basics, but this will forever be a city full of chic, pulled-together outfits that simply don't date.

Some labels stand head and shoulders above the rest, having been purveyors of this kind of luxury for decades: Max Mara's clean lines and even cleaner palette, Tod's sophisticated workwear and Loro Piana's impeccable tailoring and knitwear all set the blueprint for a wardrobe with longevity.

That's not to say that trends weren't abundant—they were! The overarching theme? A lightness and sweetness that ran through many of the collections with featherlight fabrics (think chiffon, lace and gauzy organzas) and the most heavenly of colour palettes (washed-out pastels, neutrals and plenty of subtle whites and off-whites) were whipped up into flirty, slinky, billowing-in-the-wind kind of dresses. Tailoring came loose-fitting and elegant, whilst statement skirts played the main character, paired with more casual tops for that Milanese dressed-up-but-not-too-dressed-up aesthetic.

So, let's get into it. Here are the eight trends I noticed on the S/S 25 runways at Milan Fashion Week.

Soft Shades

Pistachio green, plaster pink, limoncello yellow… the colour palette across the majority of MFW shows was soft, sweet and undeniably summer-ready. Rendered often in semi-opaque chiffons, liquid satins or the finest silks, the colours were worn solo and together to great effect.

Art Scene

One of the most adventurous trends at MFW was the abundance of artwork splashed over clothes and accessories. From poster-style prints to blown-up photographs and classical paintings, there was a literal tapping into the world of visual arts to create a break from the standard prints we normally see return for the summer months, such as stripes or florals.

Parka and Party

None of the designers knew six months ago that Oasis would reunite for the most anticipated gigs of this decade, but there was something distinctly Brit-pop about the array of functional outerwear pieces combined with party looks—a parka with a sparkly dress seems like a perfect outfit to rely upon should you be fortunate enough to bag a ticket to see the Gallagher brothers.

White as a Sheet

Moschino's runway featured lines and lines of bright-white laundry pegged above editors, and it set the tone for a theme that was present across the city: white cotton poplin fabric was used to create sundresses, throw-on co-ords and laid-back tailoring, whilst white jersey came up in vests, tube dresses and more. If there's one thing to invest in for S/S 25, it's stain remover.

Freaky Florals

Florals for spring? Groundbreaking, I know! But hear me out: spring 2025's florals genuinely look quite strange, and all the more appealing for it. Whether scratched into paint to create a radical rose print, appliquéd for 3D texture or in strange colour combinations, it seems florals are far from classic for next year.

Flapper Girls

The omnipresence of Y2K and a return to bohemia this year meant I was surprised to see the 1920s influencing some designer collections. It wasn't a full-blown homage to the decadent era, but rather a subtle nod to the flapper dresses that women wore so freely during the time. Heavily beaded dresses (a decorative trend at both LFW and MFW) in loose silhouettes with dropped waists, this style of dress was modernised with no-makeup makeup and very few accessories.

Skirt + Polo

One pairing I saw time and again was a knee-grazing skirt with a knitted polo shirt. It has that kind of offbeat Milanese vibe of smartness combined with something unexpected, and I imagine it would make for a reliable and chic office outfit.

Animal Kingdom

If any one country would ascribe to the notion that animal prints are basically a neutral, it's Italy. Leopard print was across coats and shoes, whilst snake print turned up almost everywhere. This is one of those never-ending trends that boomerangs around every year—a wise investment.

Nestled in between the major fashion month shows in February and September, Milan Men's Fashion Week—which takes place in June every year—has attracted Italy's best-dressed in droves to the Italian city this week. With a runway itinerary that includes the likes of JW Anderson, Prada, Gucci and Valentino, the Italian fashion set arrived dressed to the nines for the elegant occasion.

Styling emerging trends and faithful classics, attendees adapted to the hot Italian climate, keeping their excellent style reputation in tact. 4 MAJOR STREET STYLE TRENDS TO COME OUT OF MILAN MEN'S FASHION WEEK 2024

1. PALE BLUE

Style Notes: This summery shade has been everywhere this season, and for good reason. Adding a fresh and spirited energy to your day-to-day styling, this pretty colour trend was spotted all over Milan's streets this week. Whilst the colour always looks chic with similarly pale tones, it also looks elegant when paired with richer brown or burgundy shades that can anchor the light tone and create a dynamic ensemble.

Style Notes: Just in time for the Euros kick off, the sports-core trend was a major player this week in Milan, and the Italian crowd embraced it in every form. From baggy football shirts to roomy hocky jerseys and classic Argyls socks, no sporty style was left behind. Comfortable enough to jaunt from show-to-show, but interesting enough to match the fashion week energy, this sporty trend is one that you're bound to catch all over London's streets this season, too.

Having just wrapped up Milan Fashion Week, we’re now three-quarters of the way through one of the most important months in fashion. We've spotted elevated accessories in New York, cool-girl classics in London and high-fashion drama in Milan—the style set kept up with expectations all round, delivering bucketloads of chic and stylish looks that we’ll be copying through to September. True to form, Milan’s street style crowd has proven to be the most eccentric of the lot so far, indulging in lavish layers, bold new-season accessories and unexpected touches across the board.

MILAN FASHION WEEK STREET STYLE FROM FEBRUARY 2024

1. SPLASHES OF BURGUNDY

Style Notes: Whilst in New York it was still all about bursts of vivid red, showgoers in Milan preferred to style the paintbox hue's cooler older sister, centring their looks around deep tones of burgundy. Take this as proof that the luxurious shade is set to take over very soon.

Style Notes: We saw the London style crowd retire their heels in favour of comfortable Mary Janes this February, but everywhere we looked in Milan, we saw elegant pointed-toe heels to see showgoers through their stylish schedules.

Style Notes: Sticking to an elegant colour palette, Milan's showgoers explored all tones of camel this season, layering the neutral shade in a myriad of ways to create dimensional outfits that retained a timeless element.

Style Notes: If the fashion cities have one thing in common, it's that their most stylish residents are all slicking their hair back in the chicest way possible. Thick jersey headbands were everywhere in Milan, and the simple accessory worked overtime to pull together plenty of brilliant looks.

Style Notes: In the fluctuating February weather, Milan Fashion Week attendees completed their outfits with floor-grazing coats. Helping them to stay warm whilst adding an extra layer of drama to their outfits, full-length coats were a resounding favourite over the weekend.

Style Notes: Tailored pieces were reimagined during MFW, as asymmetrical elements crept onto classic silhouettes. From jackets to skirts and longline dresses, mismatched edges finished off all of the chicest looks.

I'm not afraid to admit that until recently, I was a card-carrying dress devotee. After all, shopping for jeans can be one of those tasks that needs time and patience, and after relying on the same pairs from Topshop for over a decade, nothing has felt the like right fit since. That is until I found The Pair. An upcycled, two-tone pair of E.L.V. jeans, tailored to my body and in an ultra-flattering cut that changed my entire perspective on denim and gave me a hankering for more.

Typically, you're most likely to find an Italian in form-fitting cuts that pair well with heels, but this season there are wide-legs, different washes and unexpected pairings aplenty; a celebration of the variety and playfulness we've come to expect from Milanese style. Style Notes: You know what they say: Bigger often does mean better, but especially when it comes to jeans. Style Notes: It just wouldn't be Milanese street style without the extra detailing that turns simple outfits into a statement. Whether its raw hems, bleaching, embellishment, extra pockets, zips or bows, jeans that are out of the ordinary score the most points. Wear them for evening with a blazer and heels, or keep them casual with a white tee and flats. However you style them, keep the rest of your look simple to let the jeans do the talking.

In the glitzy whirlwind of Milan Fashion Week, where the world's most stylish tastemakers gather to witness jaw-dropping runway moments, there's one secret It buy that’s been circulating through the fashion industry’s most elite. There have been hushed conversations and admiring glances revolving around anyone who has been seen wearing these cult Prada shoes. They’re a fresh reinterpretation of the brand's iconic archival pumps.

Like all things Prada, these shoes are made in Italy and feature a very high-quality form of leather adorned with an architectural bow or flower that transforms these simple accessories into wearable art. They were most commonly seen styled with a maxi embroidered skirt just like what we saw on the runway, but the occasional micro mini also made for a great match. Allow me to delve into the world of these sculptural shoes that we've now seen on the runway, the street style stars, and of course, our Instagram feeds.

These sculptural Prada shoes debuted at the A/W 23 runway show last February. Coming in both a flat and a kitten heel, it seemed like the options would be endless for styling it. 

Now at first glance when watching these shoes walk down the runway, we couldn't see the details, but after admiring the close-up imagery, we were absolutely obsessed. The floral details go back to the embroidery on the skirt and make these shoes feel very special.

Now that autumn 2023 is absolutely here, fashion insiders have been able to get their hands on this amazing pair of shoes. Styling the shoes with an embroidered skirt as seen on the runway is definitely the way to go.

Fashion people have truly been in their ballet-flat era for the majority of the year now, and Prada has made it clear that flat pumps are next. Who doesn't love comfort-first footwear that also makes a statement?

On the internet right now, I have been seeing these shoes predominately in white, grey, pink and sometimes yellow, but the true winner in my eyes is black. Black shoes will always be everyone's first choice, so if you want these in black, buy them now before everyone finds out how good these shoes are.

A peek into the Prada fitting room reveals some of my favorite looks from the runway styled to perfection. Elly McGaw styled these Prada pumps in more ways than one, and this was my favorite.

What do fashion people have in common? These shoes. Twinning in the black kitten-heel pumps, Caroline Daur and Camille Rowe attended the Prada show.

Eva Chen has mastered off-duty style, and seeing her wear the pumps with a more casual look that still feels dressed-up helps me envision them in my day-to-day life. I could imagine myself wearing these to a dinner in NYC.

As we round the corner into the final stretch of Fashion Month, I'm finding it as intriguing as ever to dissect the different qualities each capital brings to the table. As the cool older sister of the quad, New York Fashion Week gave us structured tailoring and reimagined classics. The city stuck to its roots with a splattering of eccentricity and effortless styling inspiration in spades. Meanwhile London Fashion Week was up for everything, as the city charmed us with trenches en masse, chic studs and plenty of pleats. 

And of the lot, Milan Fashion Week has once again affirmed that more is more in the Italian capital. The skirts were fuller, the bags bigger, the tailoring sharper and the leather… well, it was everywhere. Style Notes: For those who erred on the smarter side, their tailored pieces were elevated with whip-sharp attention to detail. Clever pleats, practical folds and asymmetric layers polished the fashion set's looks for a reconstructed take on formal dressing.

Style Notes: Voluminous skirts swished across the Italian city's streets, bringing a romantic twist to Fashion Week dressing. Oversized pleats detailed many of the styles, but we also noted large, billowy skirts aplenty.

Style Notes: Whilst the London crowd can't get enough of mary janes and New Yorkers love a silver shoe, in Milan it was all about the retro slouchy boot. Styled with minis, midis and maxis, the slouchy style brought an effortless edge to the looks of the city's best dressed.

Style Notes: When I said that more is more at Milan Fashion Week, this is what I meant. Even as the city continued to enjoy residual summer warmth, showgoers were wrapped from head-to-toe in leather ensembles. We spotted leather trench coats—a recurring theme this Fashion Month—chic leather shirts and plenty of leather bags.

5. GUCCI HORSEBIT CHAIN BAG

Style Notes: If we were to only mention one trend this Milan Fashion Week, it would have to be this. Spotted on the arms and wrists of a sizeable portion of fashion week attendees, Gucci's reimagined Horsebit Chain Bag has truly sent the fashion set into a frenzy.

6. TRADITIONAL TAILORING

Style Notes: Amongst the sparkle embossed, leather-clad crowd there were some showgoers who opted to pare things back, with a focus on clean lines and enviable tailoring. Smart suits featured cinched waists, and dresses were perfectly fitted to the body for a sharp silhouette.

Style Notes: Elbow-length leather gloves completed the looks of many Italian showgoers. Tapping into old-money elegance, the fashion set styled their dramatic gloves with leather coats, floor-length gowns and black accessories.

Sabato de Sardo's debut Gucci Ancora collection for spring/summer 2024.

Last week was a big one in Milan, but the clothes? Small. Teeny tiny. Minuscule! In essence, 2024 is primed to be a #hotpantsummer. The power moves at some of fashion’s most adored brands kept every editor, stylist, influencer and PR on their toes—Gucci’s hotly anticipated debut from new creative director Sabato de Sardo ushered in a palette cleanser of clean lines, subdued colours, ultra-luxe but understated fabrics and a lot more chat about a grey hoodie than I've ever heard.

Meanwhile, Peter Hawkings' first line for Tom Ford played into the codes of the founder, with silky shirts unbuttoned to the navel, slim-fit tailoring and ultra-glam eveningwear. Both Gucci and Tom Ford leaned towards the short hemlines and nearly naked aesthetic that was present all over Milan Fashion Week. 

So the trend for this kind of Milanese minimalism (ahem, not wearing much at all) was rendered in myriad ways. Barely-there, gossamer-light chiffon layers at Prada fluttered as models swept by, whilst butt-cheek-baring short-shorts proved to be the style of choice across MaxMara, Gucci, Bally and many more. Dresses were mini when covered up and maxi when practically see-through, and many looks were flourished with trails of billowing fabric, fringing, neck-ties or trains in order to make as good an entrance as an exit.

The drama didn’t end there, of course. Crystals abounded across the Italian collections (the volume of sparkly shoes I witnessed alone was enough to power a Barbie sequel), colours were pastel-based but somehow punchy, and tailoring came in strong with nipped-in waists and sharp shoulders (Versace being the leader here).

1. POWER-PASTEL GIRLS

Thanks to the quiet-luxury times we're living in, the fashion world has been a little beige of late. But next year's summer’s palette according to the Italians is looking very, very pretty—even good enough to eat. From lavenders and lilacs (the purple trend lingers on from London) through to baby blues, pistachio greens, soft corals and playful pinks, these are pastels but not quite as you know them, thanks to their high levels of saturation.

MaxMara sent out casual looks in these vibrant pastels and combined slightly different shades together for a chic effect.

Ferragamo's Maximilian Davis is known for his block colours, and this stunning blue-on-blue formula will undoubtedly be popular next summer.

Del Core's lavendar looks matched the mauve catwalk, but I liked the shock of red thrown in with the accessories—a colour idea I also saw all over the streets of Milan.

Donatella Versace put forward the concept this season that women can wear pastels and still be powerful, and she's not wrong. The Versace colour palette spanned baby blue, sweet pink, lime and sherbet yellow in all manner of silhouettes and finishes, but it was these little twinsets worn with silky shorts that really piqued my attention.

Emporio Armani's bohemian glamour lives on for spring/summer 2024 in the prettiest of pink and purple hues.

2. HOT PANT SUMMER

If fashion's ongoing penchant for micro-mini skirts has left you wanting more, then next season’s revealing hot pants could be the answer. They won’t be to everyone’s liking, but they will make themselves known considering just how omnipresent they were across the catwalks.

The cheekiest—and perhaps most iconic—look from Gucci's Ancora collection will be in high demand from stylists and celebrities next year.

Bally's leather tailoring was made all the edgier by its new creative director Simone Bellotti introducing the shortest of shorts alongside blazers and flats.

MaxMara's knitted pants were counterbalanced by oversized knits and classic heels.

A very Tom Ford formula from Peter Hawkings' debut offering: velvet, tailoring, silk and plenty of leg.

Gucci's Sabato de Sardo showcased micro shorts in every fabric, colour and outfit combination you could think of. 

3. FLUTTER BY

If it’s not chiffon, organza or voile, I’m not interested! Designers created dream-like movement out of these super-fine fabrics by crafting trains, tentacles, fringing and more. Providing an interesting alternative to the stricter tailored silhouettes also on the runways, this idea often came in the form of loose dresses. These billowing styles were nothing but romantic and looked like a joy to wear.

Prada's ultra-fine swathes of pastel chiffon looked magical on the runway.

Sportmax introduced voile trains to otherwise casual shapes to add drama.

Roberto Cavalli's look for spring/summer 2024 is all about cascading shapes, fringing, scarves and feathers that swoosh by.

Alberta Ferretti showcased a series of stunning maxi dresses in the lightest of silks—each one quivered beautifully in the breeze, but it was this style with the neck-tie that I loved the most.

Blumarine took a young, fun take on the trend with this fluttering ruffled train on a skimpy dress.

4. SUPERSIZE MY SHIRTS

If there’s one key item I spied on both Milano’s best dressed women and the runways, it’s the oversized shirt. Effortless and easy to restyle depending on your personal preference, it's a dead cert for next year (and the remainder of this one).

If I had to choose one look to buy from the runways, it's this chic ensemble from Daniel Blazy's Bottega Veneta. The shirt, colour, fringing and silhouette all speak to multiple trends coming out for S/S 24.

The simplicity of an elegant white shirt worn with leather trousers provided heaps of real-life inspiration over at Fendi.

Tod's took the classic piece in another direction, eshewing button-downs in favour of a cotton poplin tunic worn over slouchy trousers.

MaxMara's oversized shirts were tucked into form-fitting skirts and shorts—a fantastic balancing act.

Like wearing a back-to-front shirt you've stolen from your dad's wardrobe, I loved this restrained-but-effective Sportmax look.

MM6 Maison Margiela employed oversized shirts as layering tools for slouchy tailored looks.

I adore Etro's idea of an oversized shirt combined with a sweeping maxi skirt for an understated event or evening look.

5.��CRYSTAL GAZE

Milanese women always make an effort, and there's an ease to the way they dress up on the daily. So it makes sense that you can throw a truckload of crystals into the mix and still come out with something that somehow manages to look casual and appropriate for everyday wear. From sparkly shoes to shimmering sack dresses, no piece was left un-bedazzled.

Lorenzo Serafini added soft tailoring to his see-through crystal pieces at Philosophy, and it just worked.

A crystal Gucci Jackie bag? You bet your bottom dollar this will be a smash next season.

Prada's decorative details included metallic fringed belts, crystal-studded knitwear and eyelets punched into every possible piece you could imagine.

Giorgio Armani's combination of trousers with a crystal dress worn over the top makes for great eveningwear inspiration.

Moschino showcased four collections created by four legendary stylists to celebrate the brand's 40th anniversary. This look from Carlyne Cerf De Dudzeele is practically an ode to crystals.

Diesel's Glenn Martens went all out for shimmering crystals alongside denim and metallic leathers.

6. BOLDER SHOULDERS

Silhouettes vary across the board when it comes to structural points like dropped waists, hem lengths, bias cuts and volume, but oftentimes one thing did remain the same throughout Milan’s offering: strong shoulders. Whether counterbalanced by pulled-in waists or emphasised by blown-out tailoring, shoulder pads are continuing to mean business for S/S 24.

Prada's strong shoulders were set against ultra-cinched waists and short-shorts (I told you it's going to be a hot pants summer).

MSGM took jumbo tailoring to the max with this plaid blazer.

BOSS's corpcore collection was all about revisiting workwear, and this look plays into that defined shoulder-to-waist ratio.

Just because shoulder pads are involved, doesn't mean the look has to be severe—take this soft Philosophy outfit as a perfect example.

Versace's sculpted blazers are now becoming a firm part of the brand's modern fashion lexicon—this claret leather version was really something to behold.

London is beginning to show its first few signs of autumn. The leaves are crisping up and falling to the floor, the air has obtained that familiar cool whip, and trench coats have worked their way back onto the city's streets.

Styling an autumn-ready look when out in this week, Kate Moss combined two of our favourite autumn items: leather and trenchs, for a chic and put together ensemble for Milan Fashion Week. Wearing a monochrome look, Moss wore her black leather trench coat cinched at her waist with black ankle-grazing trousers and simple black ballet flats for her walk along the Italian streets.

A leather trench coat was spotted earlier this month on another British style icon. Alexa Chung wore a black leather trench whilst out in London during London Fashion Week. As the counties most stylish have caught the bug, there's plenty of reason to believe that the leather trench coat is on track to become a cult buy of the autumn/winter season.

Tapping in to another of the season's key trends, Moss picked a pair of black ballet flats to complete her look. A London-girl at heart, Moss was tuned in the fashion trends dominating her home town, as ballet flats and Mary Janes were a key street style trend at London Fashion Week this September.

On this occasion, Moss styled her all-black look with face-framing black sunglasses, which sat between her famed, naturally tousled hair.

Every well-dressed fashion week attendee who's been dashing around Milan for the last week may have already packed up their belongings and jet off to Paris, but one thing's for sure: they're still very much thinking about everything they just witnessed in the Italian fashion capital, and they're not stopping anytime soon. That's because, despite the fact that Paris is the most lauded of the fashion month destinations, it's Milan that, in the eyes of many, hosts today's most anticipated shows. 

Maximilian Davis's Ferragamo, Matthieu Blazy's Bottega Veneta, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons's Prada, Luke and Lucie Meier's Jil Sander—the designers who had a time slot during Milan Fashion Week this season are the ones defining style in 2023. And with that, the trends they send down the runways are important to take note of, which is why I spent the last week studying every inch of every model they each ushered through their catwalk's entrance—be it a fiery B at Blumarine or a working elevator at Gucci—to determine the 8 that are most necessary to remember for next autumn. 1. Soft Like Velvet

Velvet and winter have always been associated, with the lavish, buttery-soft fabric often being the primary choice for soirees throughout the holiday season. But nothing about the velvety smooth garments that littered the runways this season in Milan felt festive or obvious. Rather, each design was more alluring than the next, from the knotted, draped dresses at Sportmax to the rich-purple, low-rise trousers at Gucci. In turn, designers took the somewhat casted off material and transformed it, allowing for a renaissance for velvet that I, for one, wasn't expecting.

2. Ready to Wear

All of what makes it onto the runways during non-couture fashion week is technically considered "ready to wear," though I'd argue that the true percentage is far below 100%. No shame to designers that like to do the most, in fact, it's one of the most exciting aspects of working in this industry and studying runway shows, but at the same time, there's a beauty in simple, wearable ensembles as well, especially ones that still look utterly intention and luxurious. Such were the sorts of looks debuted this week in Milan, with standouts at Bottega Veneta, Gucci, MM6 Maison Margiela, Bally, and Fendi.

3. A New Class of Leggings

Last season, Prada and Ferragamo triggered a significant shift in fashion that many have been dreading for some time now: the return of skinny, fitted trouser silhouettes, and yes, that includes leggings. For autumn/winter 2023, the latter label continued on with the style, and along the way, was joined by other brands like Ferrari, MSGM, and Blumarine. And after reviewing every last leggings-like trouser option on the Milan runways, I can tell you with complete certainty that none of the pairs that debuted are reminiscent of the past. Rather, they all seem to mark a shift in the style that feels utterly fresh and imaginative.

4. Animal Instincts

Animal prints have officially outgrown their cheesy reputation and taken on one that's surprisingly mature and versatile. Once considered far too loud to be considered at all neutral, the Milan runways proved that even the boldest and most colourful of animal-esque patterns can be casually styled. From zebra-print big bags at Jil Sander to snakeskin trousers paired with trenches at Sportmax, if we learned anything from this week's shows, it's that you should never shy away from adding an animal-print addition to your otherwise low-key outfit. Don't worry, it won't be overdoing it.

5. Suiting Gone Rogue

The suiting world has gone through some major shifts in the last two seasons, steering away from massively oversized silhouettes in favour of more fitted, tailored ones. But that's not the only change we've noticed, specifically in Milan this season. Suiting and workwear has also begun toeing the line between safe for work and not so safe for work, with Prada styling skinny trousers and blazers with entirely unbuttoned blouses underneath and GCDS and Ferragamo both unveiling suits sans pants. At Gucci, blazers were repurposed into tube tops and at Fendi, Kim Jones designed something of a waistcoat-blazer hybrid with cutout shoulders. All that's to say, suiting has gone completely rogue, and honestly, it was about time.

6. In My Feels

Autumn and winter—winter especially—are seasons commonly associated with feelings of dullness and dread. In Denmark and Norway, the concept of hygge provides comfort during those long, dark days that coincide with Scandinavian winters. In Milan, apparently, the solution is ASMR textures able to combat even the lowest of cold weather–induced lows. From fuzzy fabrics at GCDS, Diesel, and MSGM to tinsel-like materials at Jil Sander and Missoni, the Milan collections this season certainly had people deep in their feels, despite the February climate outside of shows.

7. So Clutch

With luxury prices skyrocketing of late, the Milan runway collections suggest that designers want you to hold onto your high-end handbags with all your might, clutching them tightly as opposed to, say, letting them casually hang over your shoulder or around your wrist. Either that, or they were simply tired of all the handled handbags that've reigned supreme for so long and desired something fresh and new. Whatever the reason, it's clear that clutches are gearing up for one hell of a comeback, with oversized styles popping up at Jil Sander, No.21, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Ferragamo, and more throughout the Milan Fashion Week shows.

8. Hooded Figures

Perhaps this is a me problem, but every time the weather dips below 15 degrees, I immediately get the urge to enter incognito mode, tossing on any hooded garment in my wardrobe and hoping with all my might that it camouflages me until the first sign of spring's arrival. Well, the Milan runways suggest that I'm not the only one who's triggered by chilly weather, with many Italian designers encouraging fall and winter shoppers to add more hooded apparel into their closets later this year. From furry-and-leather hooded jackets at Bally to understated hoodies being layered under outerwear at Ferragamo and MSGM, a chic new mode of sartorial hibernation was unlocked in Italy last week that I'm not waiting until the tail end of 2023 to incorporate into my regular rotation.

2. BUSTIERS

In yet another Y2K throwback, the fashion crowd has embraced the bustier top. Though fitted styles have been championed by brands like Miaou and Reformation with added strap details, the original cold-shoulder premise is back in fashion. For cooler days, shrug on a jacket.

3. TULLE

Every time fashion week takes Milan, a touch of drama is added to the city's style. As if in preparation for our final stop in the birth place of couture, Paris, there's an added flair to the looks served in Milan. Case in point: sequins, embellishments and swathes of fabric.

4. YELLOW

Every season, certain colours are promoted in their relevance in the fashion scene. We first saw yellow taking centre stage at New York Fashion Week, and it's clear that there's no stopping this sunny shade. Whether you prefer a mustard or a bright yellow, there's a shade for everyone on the yellow colour wheel. 

Moto jackets in bold colours have become a staple of this season's fashion weeks.

One thing we've learnt from our street style friends is that metallics aren't just for evening. Silver and gold accessories glinted through Milan's streets, and as an eternally chic way to accessorize, we've been convinced to invest.

It was only a matter of time before hemlines dropped, and the fashion set has proven that the maxi is back in business. Denim iterations work particularly well with boots, whilst sheer inserts can create the illusion of length and show a little leg.

When super-stylist and creative director Soki Mak said she'd be happy to report from Milan Fashion Week for us, we jumped at the chance for her to take over our Instagram Stories and share her feedback on what stood out from the shows. Not only does Mak have the most incredible personal style (and her followers on Instagram can certainly attest to that), but her aesthetic is molto fabulous, which makes her the very best person to decipher the key trends from the city that is known for it's "extra" ways. And the most exhilarating show I attended was Roberto Cavalli—the energy and adrenaline from that show is why we spend all our hard-earned money flying into Milan!"

1. ULTRA-BRIGHT COLOURS

"The first trend that I've noticed throughout this season has been the use of bright colours in luxury fabrics. COVID has given designers that much-needed time to focus and reset. It's almost like everyone has come out of hibernation with a bang, giving it everything they have. With less-traditional fashion week parties, there is an utter focus on the entire production of the clothing and the show. There is an opulency to the textiles and an amazing attention to detail throughout." — Mak

3. EVEN MORE Y2K!

"With the success of Diesel with Glenn Martens on board, we see a trend in reinventing the Y2K or noughties sex appeal. Low-rise denim, shaggy oversized coats, satin boots and extreme miniskirts. Blumarine continued with the throwback references with low-rise skirts and Mariah Carey–style butterfly tops. It seems the pelvic pant was a prominent feature on the runway… Megan Fox, where are you?" — Mak

There are certain style clichés that are attached to certain fashion weeks—for example, London being regarded as "eclectic" or Parisians having a penchant for "timeless" style—and while these notions are grounded in some truth, they are not the whole picture. Street style as a phenomenon has certainly evolved a great deal since its infancy, and over time, it has shifted the industry's power dynamics and introduced different perspectives to our screens. There is no longer a one-size-fits-all approach to the style profiles of different cities.

This season's Milan street style shots perfectly speak to the sheer variety that fashion lovers bring to their own personal runways at fashion week: Extroverted snake print! Minimalist tailoring! Sassy platforms! Artistic checks! It's a veritable fashion safari out there, and after two years clad in tracksuit bottoms, we love to see it. And while every showgoer presented their own unique aesthetic, there were seven themes in particular woven through the outfits of Milan's best dressed. 

My personal highlight? It has to be the graphic stripes and checks that adorned everything from suits to accessories. Naturally, Caroline Issa looked fabulous in a checked skirt suit and green base layer in a way that only she could. I plan on re-creating the vibe by throwing Colville's striped poncho over wide-leg trousers and a check knit for print-clashing appeal.
