That's not to say, though, that the flat shoe style is for everyone. Whether they're trendy or not, some people still refuse to wear flip-flops, preferring other flat sandals, and that's their right. Fortunately, there are plenty of chic flip-flop alternatives, and one particular style is a beloved choice among women in their 30s and 40s, from Jennifer Lawrence to Meghan Markle.

The former recently wore a pair in New York City, where it's blisteringly hot out, calling for easy, comfortable sandals. Lawrence was spotted on her way to dinner, nearby Altro Paradiso in SoHo. As a result of high-profile fans like these, toe-loop sandals have quietly risen in the ranks in fashion, offering an alternative to those who either want to switch it up from flip-flops or downright dislike the popular, albeit controversial, flat-sandal trend. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably started mentally mapping out your partywear wardrobe—taking stock of the pieces that can handle the demands of the busiest time of year, while noting any spots that still need to be filled. Similarly, Meghan Markle paired sleek black separates with bow-detailed heels. Her minimalist turtleneck and fluid skirt might have read as understated, but the delicate bow added a dose of playfulness, injecting personality into her refined ensemble.

After several seasons spent trotting around in sleek slingbacks, I’d almost forgotten that a comfortable, supportive heel could exist.

Slingbacks may be the image of elegance, but for me, slipping into them comes with a silent agreement: an evening of fiddling with the strap and treading carefully. Hardly the image of poise and polish I’m trying to project.

That’s why I did a double-take when Meghan Markle emerged this week in a "dated" heel trend that actually offers support. Stepping out in an all-white ensemble, she grounded her look with a pair of light nude heels featuring a refined double ankle strap, a subtle detail that added elegance—and much-needed support—to her pretty skirt outfit.

Offering both stability and style, Meghan’s choice reminded me just how underrated ankle-strap heels have become. Once a staple in every fashion person’s wardrobe, they’ve taken a back seat as minimal slingbacks and court shoes have stolen the spotlight.

As if to confirm the "dated" shoes revival, Victoria Beckham was spotted just days earlier wearing her own take on the trend: a sleek pair styled with a calf-grazing burgundy dress. Then came Kirsten Dunst, who chose a black iteration to ground a gingham midi.

I monitor celebrity outfits for a living, and I can confidently say that this is the first time in months I’ve seen so many A-listers gravitate toward ankle-strap heels. After seasons dominated by minimalist courts and slingbacks, this resurgence feels fresh once more.

Not to alarm anyone, but I was 11 when the 2010s kicked off, and while I’m not sure I appreciated it at the time, now I look back and realise I was living through an iconic decade of pop culture and fashion.

It was the kind of time in which core memories were planted so deeply, they still come flooding back with a song or a grainy clip on YouTube. Quiet-luxury definitely wasn’t a thing and the fashion I was wearing at the time looked like it was curated by a sleep-deprived raccoon with a highlighter obsession: fuzzy, with luminous leg warmers, neon tutus, shutter shades and cropped tees proudly screaming YOLO, all worn unironically and all paired with battered UGGs and trainers that had seen better days. It was a complete sensory overload—and yes, I enjoyed every moment of it—but it’s fair to say my sense of style has come a long way since then.

So imagine my disbelief when I was scrolling through my social feed in 2025, only to be confronted with carousel after carousel of 2010s outfits that, actually, look undeniably stylish now. At first, I was dubious but the fact is, there are some 2010s outfits that do look stylish in the year 2025. The fashion cycle has done what it always does and now, 15 years later, we are seeing trends from 2010 reemerge. From the Boho Renaissance seen across Chloé, Miu Miu, Isabel Marant, Etro and Coach’s spring/summer 2025 collections, to Hailey Bieber at the Met Gala afterparty, stepping out in sky-scraping platform peep-toes like it's 2010 all over again, there is plenty of proof to back me up.

Topping off this full-circle moment? Isabel Marant’s iconic Bekett hidden wedge high tops, the very same silhouette Beyoncé wore in the Love On Top music video, are back and ranked as the eighth hottest product in the world on the LYST Index Q2 2025 report. If that’s not a fashion reset, I don’t know what is.

While the butter yellow shade caught my eye instantly, it was the textured linen fabrication that made it linger. Its breezy structure makes it the perfect companion for humid city days, offering breathability without compromising on elegance.

Compromising what I have to assume is a continuous strand of diamonds set in silver or perhaps white gold, this classic piece instilled a classy and elegant finish that made her red carpet styling feel all the more refined. However, a tennis necklace shouldn't be reserved for "best"—I always see fashion people wearing theirs with low-key outfits—think a cardigan, jeans and a simple tee.

Regardless of what you wear them with, tennis necklaces exude a luxurious charm that often belies their price point. Whilst traditional designs featuring diamonds and gold can cost thousands, contemporary alternatives using lower-cost materials offer the same opulent appeal at a fraction of the price, giving you a rich-looking payoff no matter the budget.

With Christmas on the approach, I have to say that for me, finding a better gift under the tree would be a hard task. Attending an engagement in Colombia yesterday, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex styled a fresh handbag trend that fashion people in New York and Monaco have marked as a key buy for the new season.

Using the white bag trend to inject some lightness into her look, she cultivated a clean colour palette of white, black and navy, showing us the three-tone look that we'll be seeing everywhere this autumn.

Markle isn't the only one to champion the white bag trend this season; I've also spotted the style take off in some of the chicest cities out there. A neutral shade that's both fresh and refined—and goes with every other colour—the a white handbag adds a bright and polished element to an outfit in an easy and uncomplicated way.

A new staple on the style set scene, I've been slowly coming around to this trend in recent months. Having brushed it aside for fear of looking "cheap"—which probably reflects my own lack of confidence in keeping a white leather item clean—I've recently come to realise that they trend can look supremely elegant when thoughtfully styled. Far from the looks we wore them with in the '00s when white bags last peaked, Markle's navy and white pairing looks so elevated. I've also seen white bags worn with other light neutral shades in an undeniably chic way.

Having spotted this trend on the streets of New York, Monaco and now, Colombia, we're certain to see white bags become a new-season staple this year.

Taking inspiration from the French fashion set, Meghan Markle stepped out in a quintessentially Parisian outfit this week, styling a pair of grey skinny jeans with tonal ballet flats for an evening out. Referencing an outfit combination much loved in the early 00s, Markle put a decidedly modern spin on her outfit with her chosen colour palette. Whilst the popularity of skinny jeans peaked in the 00s and 10s, fashion people are embracing them again in 2024. Although I'm personally still coming around to the idea of wearing them again, the French have never let this classic jeans style fall out of favour. Styling them with roomy knits, smart blazers and most importantly, ballet flats, the French style set has long made the case for these divisive jeans.

Capable of adding a streamlined finish to an outfit in ways other denim styles simply can't, skinny jeans are working their way back into the wardrobes of those in the know. For a spring styling twist, the French-loved ballet-flat pairing complements the polished nature of skinny jeans, culminating in a casual outfit that you could wear to a myriad of occasions.

Aside from the fact that both Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham are married to men who I would acknowledge as British royalty, the two have never struck me as having very much in common. But now, I'm starting to conclude that their similarities might outweigh their differences. Both extraordinary women are former performers and they've both spent many years in the public eye. And, upon further analysis, they both seem to possess quite a similar sense of style.

The two favour a relaxed but polished approach to style, often opting for comfortable jeans for a casual event or a smart suit set when dressing up. Fond of a refined look, both manage to experiment with seasonal, trending silhouettes without veering from their personal styles, consistently creating chic ensembles that I'm always drawing inspiration from. This winter, their similarities have been staring me in the face, as both women recently took to styling the draped dress trend that has been cropping up everywhere this season.

Styling her beige. off-the-shoulder draped dress to the Variety Power of Women event in L.A., Markle kept her accessories to a minimum, choosing a small black clutch bag that stood out against her neutral-toned dress. The nature of the draped dress affords the wearer the option to veer on the minimal side when it comes to accessories, as the added pleats and folds inject enough texture and interest into the look.

Meanwhile, Beckham wore her draped dress to a press event in Notting Hill earlier this season, opting for a similar styling route by forgoing layers of jewellery and paring back her look to only the essentials: large shades, a compact handbag and her favourite peep-toe boots.

There aren't a lot of clothing items that if you put them on Meghan Markle, won't look incredible. Really, I'm not sure if there are any at all. But, as someone who's studied her style from the Suits days until now, I can tell you that there are some pieces that stand out amongst the rest as being especially chic and memorable. One such example just made its debut this week, and already, I'm convinced that it'll go down as the centrepiece of one of the humanitarian's best outfits yet. 

On Tuesday, Markle, along with Prince Harry, spoke on a panel in New York City called the Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in the Digital Age, which The Archewell Foundation, the couple's charitable organisation, put on with Project Healthy Minds for World Mental Health Day. For the speaking engagement, Markle chose one of the minimalist shades that she wears best, ivory, in the form of an off-the-shoulder Altuzarra blazer that she then paired with matching tailored trousers from the NYC-based brand and her go-to Aquazzura pumps. 

Across fashion, off-the-shoulder silhouettes have been gaining momentum as the chic older sister to a basic tee, tank, or in this case, blazer. It adds a touch of sexiness while also maintaining an undeniable air of elegance and sophistication. So, it's really no wonder why I and everyone else I've shown the below photo to have been equally obsessed with Markle's look for the event. Between Fashion Week and Meghan Markle's many appearances at the Invictus Games, it's been quite a week for celebrity sightings. Now that it's September, people are starting to dabble in autumn trends, and I love to see it, especially when celebrities have favourite trends in common. And one of them was quick to emerge this week.

Satin was a trend that was spotted on the A/W 23 runways of Tory Burch, Saint Laurent, and Ferragamo (among others), and now, it's been spotted on Meghan Markle, Katie Holmes, and Kendall Jenner within hours of each other. I think it's safe to say that it's one of autumn's prettiest trends, if not the prettiest. Whether in jewel tones, pastels, or neutrals, a garment just looks so much more luxe when the fabric is satin—as you can see with Jenner's and Markle's button-downs and Holmes's pencil skirt.

Attending the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex styled a smart monochrome shorts suit set with the trending closed-toe shoe style that we've been seeing all over city streets this fashion month—flat slingbacks.

Leaning in to two major autumn/winter trends: co-ords and slingbacks, The Duchess styled a look that felt both timeless and relevant, whilst balancing the weather demands of this time of year. Able to withstand a bit of drizzle, but accommodating for the warmth of mid-September, Markel's Chanel closed-toe sling backs were a fitting choice for the autumn event. If you’re anything like me, you are always looking for ways to cut down your time getting ready in the morning without sacrificing style. Beyond makeup, my hair is usually what takes me the longest to do. When I was 19, I worked in a small clothing boutique that sold a surprisingly impressive designer assortment for a college town such as mine. On the ready-to-wear side, its racks were lined with Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Lauren Manoogian, and Samuji. And for denim, we exclusively sold Frame Denim, the brand every LA and NYC fashion girl was wearing at the time. I adored every pair from the brand and too often spent my entire paycheque on jeans.

It's pretty much guaranteed that whatever Meghan Markle wears will sell out. Well, that is if it wasn't custom made or impossible to get your hands on (which has happened quite a bit given the whole royal thing). Even then, though, I'd be willing to bet that at least one person got pretty close to sourcing the same thing. Ahead of her 42nd birthday, Markle was spotted on a dinner date with Prince Harry at Tre Lune in Montecito, California wearing a black-and-cream striped tube dress that's both reasonably affordable and majorly chic. The dress, called the Theo, was designed by the Australian label Posse, which has been allover the fashion news of late ever since Sofia Richie Grainge wore a linen two-piece set from the brand during her wedding weekend in the South of France.

We haven't seen a ton of Meghan Markle lately, but I'm crossing my fingers for a surprise Met Gala appearance on the first Monday of May. How amazing would that be? When Meghan Markle wears anything, be it a casual ensemble or a black-tie gown, we pay attention. So, earlier this week, when she decided to forgo wide-leg trousers—the pants silhouette that has been consistently dominating over the past few seasons—and instead opt for a pair of skinny trousers for a low-key restaurant date with her husband, Prince Harry, we noticed. Having morphed into something of a trendsetter in recent years, we just knew her selection would spark a style revolution—we've already seen countless comments on social media praising her for her choice. However, considering how rare Markle sightings are these days, what we didn't expect was to spot her wearing them again within the space of a week.

Sure, her first pair were leather, which she styled with a current-looking scarf coat and some trusty suede pumps, but her latest look has the same chic hallmarks as the OG: a tonal palette and simple styling, making it feel very French in the process. Let's break it down.

If you've ever wondered what a royal wears on a date night, well, now you can wonder no more. Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry stepped out for a rainy evening together, but instead of re-creating that iconic image of them walking under an umbrella in a downpour, instead, Markle presented us with a look we'd very much like to re-create for ourselves. Oh, and did I mention it involves one of 2023's top trends? 

I would like to make one thing clear before we proceed; wide-leg trousers are still very much a thing and remain a chic item in any wardrobe. Umbrella: check. Water droplets capturing the flash of the cameras just so: check. Incredible dress: check, check, check! Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped out in the rain on Tuesday to attend the 2022 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Awards in New York City, and, wow, they did so in style. I don't know about you, but after being in a relationship for a very, very long time, I can tell you my date nights have become significantly less glamorous over the years. So gazing on as Harry and Meghan enjoyed a midweek night out made for delightful and vicarious viewing. 

For the occasion, Markle wowed in a custom Louis Vuitton column dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline and long sleeves, which bore a subtle resemblance to her wedding dress silhouette. This dress, however, features elegant (and on-trend) draping to the waist and a perfectly positioned split to better showcase a shoe moment. Keeping things classic, Markle opted for a pair of timeless black patent pumps and a coordinating clutch, completing her ensemble with a sentimental touch: an aquamarine ring that once belonged to Harry's late mother, Princess Diana. With her hair slicked back into a low bun and her makeup as flawless as ever, this just might be one of her best looks to date. I have no notes. 

It would, however, be remiss of me not to mention that this is the first red carpet appearance the couple have made since the trailer of their new Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, was released, and with that comes the understanding that all eyes would be on them even more so than usual. We all know that Meghan Markle dresses with purpose; that every item she chooses to wear tells a unique story, so why would this night be any different? While white features regularly in Markle's wardrobe—she's a classicist at heart—choosing to wear it now could be symbolic. We all know the impact that colours can have on our moods and well-being; individual people will gravitate towards specific shades when, say, they want to feel empowered in a work meeting. In chromotherapy, also known as colour therapy, white is said to attract "positive spiritual energy and cultivates purity for the wearer," and wearing white is a statement of peacefulness. Perhaps this is the true message Meghan Markle wants us to take away from her ensemble; one which I support, particularly over the coming days.

To quote Taylor Swift, what if I told you none of it was accidental? Meghan Markle's most recent outfit may seem unexpected at first, but there's actually a hidden meaning behind the colour combination she chose to wear. Listen, I don't blame you if you were too focused on Meghan Markle's empowering discussion to notice the colour of her shoes, but you know we're all about style and substance here at Who What Wear, so you can bet I'll be talking about both.

Markle attended a fundraiser for the Women’s Fund of Central Indiana, which runs programs for women on intimate violence prevention, executive leadership, mental health, and more. For the event, the Duchess of Sussex wore a green Giorgio Armani dress with purple Manolo Blahnik shoes.

As Page Six smartly pointed out, green and purple, along with white, are actually the official colours of International Women's Day. Spring/Summer 2023 Fashion Trends: The 21 Looks You Need to Know About

Thin hair may be low maintenance in some aspects (it requires little time to blow-dry and your salon appointments will be kept short), but it’s notoriously one of the most difficult hair types to style. Your main goal is probably all about adding lift, volume, and movement in order to create the illusion of thicker hair, but it takes more than a little effort to maintain shape and prevent roots from falling flat.

Of course, as with any hair type, getting the right haircut for thin hair sets the best foundation for finding a foolproof hairstyle. So what kinds of cuts should thin hair types request from the hairdresser? "Shorter styles adding textured layers for lots of movement can help the hair to look thicker and give body,” advises hairstylist and content creator Holly Carr. "And mid-length styles with soft face shaping are great for adding soft waves and still being able to put up. If you have long hair then Carr recommends keeping the weight in the ends. "Blunt cuts can help to keep the ends looking thicker and healthier for longer.”

When it comes to styling, Carr recommends creating waves or curls to add fullness. "You can curl the hair underneath or bring just a couple of pieces around the ears forwards toward the face,” she says. "This creates the illusion of thicker hair around the neck and face.” And for those who prefer up-dos? "Textured hair ups are also great,” she adds. "Try lifting the hair at the crown for volume and at the sides for width while any loose pieces add detail.”

The last week has been all about Meghan Markle. Slow heatwave days and refreshing cooler moments were punctuated by the latest photos of the Duchess of Sussex that set the fashion crowd alight.

If you were on a social detox, or simply busy staring into a fan, then you may have missed the frenzy induced by Meghan's flowy jumpsuit or the sleek tailored shorts she wore for her meeting with feminist pioneer Gloria Steinem. During my deep dive into Meghan's style, I noticed there were a few specifics she relies on. Classic combinations are key to creating chic looks that still feel modern, which led me to create mathematical-like formulations to follow to replicate Meghan's style, albeit on a budget. Muted tones like blue, white and brown are often combined for preppy daytime styles, whilst for more sophisticated events, a full tonal look always does the trick. A lot of Meghan's outfits rely on great staples like jeans, shorts and shirts that you may already have in your wardrobe. But if you don't, I've found great options (at great prices) from Marks and Spencer, Karen Millen, H&M and more.

I've broken down some of Meghan's greatest looks over the past few years to show just how easy they are to re-create, even on a high-street budget.

Meghan Markle's visit to New York continues, and her latest look is quite a departure from her previous two (check those out here and here), although all are characteristically polished. One of Markle's outings this week was for lunch with legendary feminist pioneer Gloria Steinem. Name something better than spotting Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on a hot date in New York City—I'll wait. The couple, who descended upon NYC because of Prince Harry's role as the keynote speaker during the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, followed up the event with a dinner out at Locanda Verde in TriBeCa, where Markle debuted yet another one of her many winning looks.

Just like she did for her daytime ensemble, the Duchess of Sussex opted for black, wearing a sleek, strapless jumpsuit by Gabriela Hearst. If you like to see what Meghan Markle wears these days and also need new sandals, you've come to the right place. Markle was out in Santa Barbara over the weekend to cheer Prince Harry on at his polo match, and her casual summer outfit was quite relatable. The denim-on-denim look included a tucked-in button-down and shorts by L.A.-based brand Dôen (now sold out, sorry). When a pop star, duchess, and fashion editor all agree on the same trend, you know it's a good one. On Wednesday, Jennifer Lopez was photographed at the Avra Rockefeller Center for a party celebrating her new Netflix documentary, Halftime. Next, Jennifer Lopez's timeless bikini is going viral on Instagram. 

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has done what I once considered to be the impossible—she has convinced me that I need to buy and wear a pair of shorts this summer. Attending a polo match in Santa Barbara, the royal was clearly keen to flex her fashion muscles, as she wore what I would say is one of her chicest ensembles to date. A bold claim considering her solid sartorial track record, but the way in which she styled her shorts is nothing less than a masterclass in looking elevated and polished.

The shorts in question are no tatty denim cut-offs, either. Instead, Markle opted for a pair of now-sold-out loose-fitting, tailored shorts by Khaite, a brand she and countless other celebrities, including Katie Holmes and Dakota Johnson, are firm fans of. Pairing them with a timeless Celine polka-dot blouse, statement sunglasses, her fail-safe Aquazzura heels and a black wide-brim hat, Markle understood (and aced) the assignment with her glamorous attire.

I’m also very here for the addition of Celine’s monochromatic polka dots, which present a fresh print alternative to the usual saturation of florals we see at this time of year.

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Prince Harry-founded Invictus Games kicked off this weekend in the Netherlands, and of course, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in attendance. And for one of the more casual events of the weekend, Markle went for the winning combination of jeans and flats (Chanel ballet flats, to be exact). Next, the key trends for autumn winter 2021. 

I can't believe this, but I'm writing my first Meghan Markle story in well over a year. It's honestly making me nostalgic. I used to cover her looks on practically a weekly basis, and I've honestly missed it. Yesterday in New York, Meghan and Harry made their first in-person public appearance since leaving the UK. They made the cross-country trip for Global Citizen Live this weekend, and their first stop was One World Trade Center where they met with the city's mayor and governor of the great state of New York.

As a member of the royal family, Markle kept things pretty conservative, although she did dabble in trends from time to time. But today, she kept things as timeless as can be, opting for an autumn outfit consisting of a navy Giorgio Armani coat with a rollneck, trousers, and navy Aquazzura pumps. What do Meghan Markle and Sienna Miller have in common? Well, apart from lucrative acting careers, that is. We're specifically thinking of a sartorial symmetry between the two celebs: a love for blue-and-white striped shirts. Only this week, Miller was spotted in head-to-toe pinstripes at Wimbledon, while it was back in 2018 that the Duchess of Sussex watched a match in a very chic get-up of a striped shirt and white trousers. 

Incidentally, we've also spotted this classic style on the feeds of Instagram's best dressed this summer, with the likes of Anne Laure Mais and Ellie Delphine of Slip Into Style embracing the striped shirt's tailored charm. I myself recently found a second-hand Ralph Lauren iteration in a local charity shop—in the men's section no less—and have enjoyed embracing its oversized appeal with jeans and chunky sandals.

Mark your calendars: Oprah's highly-anticipated interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is set to air on Sunday. It comes hot on the heels of other major news from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex just two weeks ago: their baby #2 announcement. While we're currently six days out from the interview, the network has kindly shared a short preview to whet our appetite. 

In the preview, Markle is wearing a dress by Armani embellished with a lotus flower, earrings by Canadian brand Birks (which she's worn numerous times), and a necklace by British designer Pippa Small. She is also wearing a bracelet that belonged to the late Princess Diana because the couple wanted to include her in the interview. How sweet is that?

Don't overlook the details of her outfit: The lotus is a symbol of rebirth and revival, paralleling the couple's reemergence in their brand-new post-royal life. In a press release, CBS explained what to expect from the program. "In the two-hour special, Oprah speaks with Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, in a wide-ranging interview, covering everything from stepping into life as a royal, marriage, motherhood, and philanthropic work, to how she is handling life under intense public pressure," the statement said. "Later, the two are joined by Prince Harry as they speak about their move to the United States and their future hopes and dreams for their expanding family."

The Duchess of Sussex is in London this week for what many are calling her farewell royal tour, as Harry and Meghan officially end their royal duties on the last day of this month.
