Congratulations are in order for Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, who revealed that they are pregnant with their third child together just minutes before the Met Gala. The musician and beauty mogul arrived at The Carlyle ahead of the event, co-chaired by A$AP Rocky (as well as Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, and LeBron James), wearing none other than the same brand she famously rocked throughout her first pregnancy, Miu Miu (you know the crystal look).

This time around, she rocked a sporty two-piece skirt-and-pullover set from Miuccia Prada's F/W 25 collection, which debuted back in early March during Paris Fashion Week. With the gray co-ord, she carried a fur stole (embellished with a brooch) and wore matching gray knee-high socks and pumps as well as a black cloche hat.

The couple currently has two children together, RZA Athelston Mayers and Riot Rose, both of whom were announced in iconic fashions. The news of Rihanna's first pregnancy hit newsstands when she and A$AP Rocky held a photo shoot in Harlem in January 2022, with the "We Found Love" singer donning a hot-pink coat, low-rise jeans, and a belly chain. We found out about her second pregnancy on stage at the Super Bowl in February 2023, where she wore a custom red Loewe jumpsuit.

Following her appearance at the Carlyle, Rihanna joined A$AP Rocky at the Met Gala, walking the blue carpet solo in a custom Marc Jacobs ensemble. Later in the evening, she changed into a third look, this time a custom three-piece set by Ann Demeulemeester's creative director Stefano Gallici, that she wore to an after-party at Jean's in NoHo.

Rihanna’s maternity outfits have been a hot topic of late on the WhatsApp group I share with my closest friends. I can’t speak from experience—pregnancy isn’t something I’ve experienced first-hand—but almost all of my friends who have carried a child have told me that one thing they didn’t necessarily expect was how their changing shapes and self-image affected their personal style.

Each confided in me how they didn’t feel like themselves when it came to maternity dressing and subsequently defaulted to elastic-waistband jeans and printed wrap dresses. Let it be known there’s absolutely nothing wrong with elastic-waistband jeans and printed wrap dresses, but if those pieces don’t fit in with your pre-pregnancy aesthetic, I can understand how it might feel as though you’re losing part of your sartorial identity. This is likely why my friends and I share mutual love and respect for Rihanna’s maternity outfits.

"I just love how she’s dressing for herself… Serving up the sort of looks we would ordinarily expect from RiRi,” one of my pals succinctly summarised. Rihanna has never been one to conform to any so-called fashion "rules,” which makes her one of the most exciting celebrity dressers out there. And her maternity looks are peak RiRi. Wearing everything from a sheer black lace-trimmed négligée and vinyl knee boots to Dior’s A/W 22 show to the low-slung jeans and belly chains she chose to announce her news in, Rihanna has chosen maternity outfits consistent with her back-catalogue of directional and bold and looks. While I doubt my expecting friends will reach for sexy lingerie for their next trip to Tesco, I believe that Rihanna’s influence will inspire not just those in my inner circle but anyone grappling with pregnancy dressing to embrace a maternity style that’s more intrinsically "them.”

RIHANNA’S MATERNITY OUTFITS

Style Notes: The glow is blinding in this Rihanna maternity outfit, featuring a sequin skirt, belly chain, and silver bra top. Her high ponytail and metallic makeup combination is nothing short of perfection. 

Style Notes: Comfort is key whether you’re expecting or not, and what could be comfier than a jersey bodysuit? This, evidently, is how Rihanna does onesies. 

Style Notes: For her most recent outing—to sit front row at Dior’s A/W 22 runway show, no less—Rihanna opted for a sheer babydoll négligée, thong, vinyl coat and knee boots. 

Style Notes: Monochromatic outfits—wearing the same shade top to toe—are favoured by the fashion pack. Rihanna’s apricot iteration, which she wore to Off-White’s A/W 22 show in Milan, is glowy and gorgeous. Featuring a leather Off-White minidress and a floor-length shearling camel coat plucked directly from the Diesel A/W 22 runway, this is a masterclass in monochrome dressing. 

Style Notes: Colour-pop faux fur is a huge trend right now, so naturally, Rihanna has already been wearing it for months. Here she is styling her outerwear, which she wore to Gucci’s earlier runway show (more on that below), pairing it with a sheer, monogrammed minidress from the brand. 

Style Notes: For Gucci’s A/W 22 show during Milan Fashion Week, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky turned out in impeccable style. For the occasion, Rihanna wore a black latex crop top, which she paired with a lilac coat from Gucci’s pre-fall 2022 collection. Completing the look was a pair of black trousers emblazoned with a red dragon down one leg, which came from the same collection. The finishing touch? A bedazzled headdress. 

Style Notes: For her first public appearance since announcing her pregnancy—a Fenty Beauty Universe event—Rihanna chose a metallic fringe set from The Attico.��Featuring a lime-green backless halter top and ombré silver-and-purple trousers, this was just the beginning of Rihanna’s experimental maternity outfits.

Style Notes: Still keeping her pregnancy private with the plan of announcing it in just a matter of days, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky stepped out together. Her legs may be on show, but in lieu of trousers, Rihanna tackled the chill in a weatherproof coat from Balenciaga, which she styled with Miu Miu ski gloves. 

Style Notes: Looking back, it’s easy to now see that Rihanna’s furry scarf—a vintage Prada scarf, no less—was probably used to distract from her baby bump, which, in a matter of days, she’d reveal to the world.

Oh, and she's just had her first child—so things are pretty busy right now for this multi-hyphenate! Here, she shares the key items that have kept her feeling and looking like herself during her pregnancy.

There’s so much that, as women, we don’t know about going into parenthood, especially in the early days of pregnancy. Something clearly overlooked, time and time again, by me too, is how much one’s self-image is literally tested for a whole nine months and longer. 

As I write this, I’ve had a whole week (maybe a couple of months) of assumptions and projections from literally everyone and their mum, sister, friend, colleague, partner, and, my gosh, it’s overwhelming! If you are pregnant or in the early stages of motherhood, I hope this column brings you some comfort and inspiration.

Being pregnant comes with a lot of pressure, and despite the smiles and serious attempts to continue as "normal" during every trimester (and yes, I am speaking about myself and from personal experience here), do not be fooled by external appearances that every day is a struggle from sleeping to literally getting out of bed (rolling in my case) and then the pressure of getting dressed. No, it’s not the end of the world. I take my mental health seriously, though, and for me, getting dressed and feeling good in this vessel of a pregnant body means a lot, not just during my pregnancy but also beyond. I want to be able to look back and think, Chloé, you really did try. You really took care of yourself and protected your identity.

Maybe that’s what it’s all about. Protecting the identity of 30+ years, which I have grafted for… what I am so proud of and completely in love with. Why should this and planning on loving this new part of my life—my tiny human and my new responsibilities and body—be mutually exclusive? I still need to be Chloé. I commit to this!

So this post is all about what I’ve discovered in the last eight months about dressing for my ever-changing body, using self-acceptance and stepping away from the pull (or lack thereof) of maternity fashion and instead choosing non-maternity fashion that works now and post-baby, which can help me stay true to me and you to you. 

1. FOOTWEAR, FIRST AND FOREMOST

Growing up, my friends and I had this thing. Whoever we met, especially guys, would be judged (sorry about that!) from the footwear upwards. As an adult, I often plan my outfits the other way around. That is unless it's an outfit featuring a pair of sneakers. I will always be a sneakerhead, but heavy pregnancy in the height of the summer season and sneakers aren't exactly a match made in Nike heaven (which is my idea of heaven).

I quickly realised that clothing itself isn’t my biggest issue being pregnant as much as footwear and overall looks are, even as a plus-size pregnant woman. What is an issue is swelling feet, so an absolute must-have is the Birkenstock or any chunky sandals that catch your eye or heart or represent pain relief. As soon as sneakers started becoming tight, I got myself into a pair of Birkenstocks. 

Another part of your essential footwear wardrobe is chunky, heeled and versatile sandals. I have these Perspex Zara sandals from 2020, which I will cherish forever. You can be pregnant and glam without experiencing pain just to look good. It’s definitely possible and definitely not a crime to put a little or a lot of effort into making yourself look—and therefore feel—good when pregnant.

2. DRESSES YOU CAN WEAR ON REPEAT

My pregnancy has spanned two years (hey, COVID-19) and is now in the height of its fourth season… yay, summer! I mean that sarcastically. London is practically burning as I pound into my keyboard with a tower fan circulating (or should I say recycling hot air?), but the upside is that I’m making every moment of this by wearing cute summer dresses, and that is what a summer pregnancy cannot take from me.

What do I look for in a summer dress, especially when pregnant? A style that, by its very nature, can be worn on repeat day to night is playful (hello, cut-outs!) and doesn’t cling but isn’t so floaty that it could reveal one's private parts in case of a sudden breeze! The chosen dress must make me look and feel cute or sexy (pick your character) and, most importantly, regardless of when it was purchased, always be on trend.

My DMs pop with every outfit uploaded to Instagram from both pregnant and non-pregnant women asking about my outfits, where I purchased them from and, sadly, that they didn't think they could "pull it off." If the past year has taught us anything, it's to buy and wear the dress. No buts. No hesitation. Go for it, and feel confident in your decision.

3. LEVELLED-UP PJ'S

It’s no surprise that comfort is not only practical but key for pregnancy-wear, fashion and life in general, but retail market intelligence platform Edited solidified my beliefs with recent stats from across the market, identifying increased attention on the sleep market over the past year, which has led to several retailers dedicating more of their assortment share to the category. Boden's sleepwear has grown from 0.3% to 2% and Loft's 1.3% to 5.1% YoY, and bathrobes have increased in popularity, equalling 12.3% of sleepwear at Madewell from 1.9% in 2020. Maybe the pandemic did it, but elevated sleepwear, which you can wear at home and outside (yes, the streets), breathes easily and functions in everyday life, especially on Zoom calls because, you know, pregnant people can still work and run entrepreneurial businesses—we don’t just stop. It’s all appropriate and totally relevant to redefining non-maternity, pregnancy fashion.

4. SUITING, BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Now, this is not the kind of suiting you were initially thinking of but instead more carefully curated separates and wardrobe essentials (or basics depending on who you are speaking to) that, when worn together, just create effortless magic. 

Depending on how you feel in this time of unprecedented body changes, you can go all out and purchase a whole new wardrobe based on your pre-body baby and plans for post-baby recovery, or you can shop smart. First, check what you have in your wardrobe, get your dejunking head firmly screwed on, and then digest. Colour-code what you have, and then top up. When I say suiting, what I really mean is matching, and by matching, anything can be thrown together. Two-pieces are my weakness, but don’t let that stop you. Try the following in the same colour or tonal palette: loose-fitted linen trousers and a bodysuit, a ribbed tank dress and matching blazer, a slip dress and textured cardigan, a shirt dress and statement shoes, sandals or boots (if swelling permits). The options are endless. Hot tip! Make linen a priority right now, and pay attention to how the garment is cut. Then, thank me later. 

Unless spoken by Amy Poehler in a pink tracksuit, I dislike the term "cool mum." I have various issues with it, and for the sake of our collective sanity, I won't unpack it here. But the main problem I have with it is that it implies mums, as a rule, aren't cool. That the moment you become a mum, however that happens, you immediately start looking and behaving a certain way. Well, spoiler alert, you don't. Okay, sure, do I cry at adverts more? Yes. And am I unable to watch any show where a kid is in danger? Yes also. But when it comes to me as a person, who, let's face it, has always been a bit of a crier, then no, I haven't changed. I am still me. And that also extends to my wardrobe. 

Fashion, as I repeatedly say, isn't frivolous, and it is part of our personal identity. Just because I grew a person in my body doesn't automatically make me reach for dark clothing that doesn't show the mud my toddler gets on me at the park. Or that I must forsake wearing pretty dresses in case a sticky banana hand touches them. These things will happen, but does that mean you can't enjoy your wardrobe anymore and instead just wear utilitarian items that are all function over form? No, of course not. 

I reached out to three mums I follow on Instagram and whose style I love and asked them to give the best advice to any parent, really, on how not to lose your sense of personal style. There are some important words of wisdom that are not only great for fashion but also great for looking after yourself in general. I've also given some of my advice. "Getting dressed and doing my makeup at the start of each day set me up to feel in control and that my identity wasn't just being a mum."

"My style didn’t change at all when I became a mum. I was quite young when I had my first (26), and it didn’t really occur to me to change how I dressed! I think the only real change I made was investing in tops that made it easy to breastfeed. I didn’t wear much white or lighter colours for years, as it just wasn’t wise. As hard as I tried, there would always be some kind of stain on me by the end of the day!

"It’s such a shame that mums let themselves slip into an uninspired mindset. Getting dressed and doing my makeup at the start of each day set me up to feel in control and that my identity wasn’t just being a mum. You give so much, and it’s a long journey (mine are all teenagers now, and it’s still full-on!), so it’s important to invest in you.

"My best advice is to take it a day at a time, even an hour at a time if need be. It’s a roller coaster of emotion and a new level of giving of yourself that feels so tiring but is a very beautiful thing. And don’t compare yourself or your child to anyone. You’re the best mum your baby could have.”

"I still had the same wardrobe before and after both of my pregnancies. At the time and a lot now, I don’t wear one specific size but choose a size to how I like it to fit my body, so I had lots of loungewear and leggings to wear and oversize T-shirts, shirts and knits that saw me right through. I don't think I ever stopped wearing anything in particular.

"I don’t think there is a ‘mum’ style, only your own style. If you’re a mum, then I think that it should be separate to what you choose to wear. I don’t dress a certain way just because I am a mum. I find this one hard to answer, as I always felt like myself throughout.

"All I can say is that things change, and you will feel more yourself if you follow how you feel. Do what is good for you, and be flexible with yourself. Try not to compare.”

"I couldn’t get my head around the fact that people assumed you automatically wear frumpy clothes just because you grew a child. I was still me, I still had an obsession with clothes, and I still dressed in the same style, but I have to admit, I did swap out stilettos for chunky sandals and trainers quite early on. 

"I cracked a rib toward the end of my first pregnancy so couldn’t wear a bra! So I had to work out new ways to make it less obvious that I didn’t have a bra on. My sister got married when I was eight months pregnant and wanted everyone in white dresses. I sewed a giant bow over the bust on the dress so hopefully no one would notice I was braless. Hugely pregnant in a white dress with no bra was quite a difficult look to style! My style isn’t defined because I now have children, so although I’ve managed to use my stylist expertise to learn some hacks along the way (like about how my wardrobe will work when I’m in a hurry to get out the door with two kids), the basis of what I’m wearing is still the same as before.

"If I didn’t have kids, I’d still be in the same clothes 100%. And this is the reason we started @ThisIsMothership. When I had my daughter almost six years ago, there was nothing out there saying it was okay to wear the same clothes as in your pre-mum life. As soon as you fall pregnant, everyone tells you to buy maternity clothes and breastfeeding outfits, but this isn’t necessary at all. As superficial as it sounds, fashion and beauty are so important to our mental health. It’s a type of self-care. A well-put-together outfit, some tailoring and a red lip can take little effort but instantly lift your mood, and when you are in the depths of motherhood, a quick and easy mood booster is essential.”

"If you don't wear the pieces you love, you'll never wear the clothes that truly make you feel like you."

I was shocked when I had my son that my body didn’t return to how it was before. I didn’t expect it to do so immediately, but I thought six months after having him, it might have changed back. It took until I stopped breastfeeding (19 months) for me to really feel like my body was similar, and a lot of that is to do with genetics. Some people can bounce back; for others, it takes a bit of time to feel like themselves again, and I wish I’d known that sooner and been kinder to myself about that. 

But this impacted my personal style for sure. The major obstacle was that I had a much larger cup size, which meant tops I used to love wearing were no good. I had to find tops that were loose enough to fit my bigger chest but didn’t make me feel frumpy. I found decent tees (some great vintage ones) that still felt like my style, and paired them with some cool faux-leather trousers (which I sized up in) and floaty leopard-print culottes, which were ideal for warmer weather. Oh, and don’t forget to go for a bra fitting—it will make you feel so much better. 

Now, nearly three years on with a toddler, all of my old clothes fit, and I still refuse to compromise on my style. While plenty might shy away from wearing their favourite wardrobe items, if you don’t wear the pieces you love, you’ll never wear the clothes that truly make you feel like you. Whether it’s my favourite red cardigan, which has seen more than its fair share of yoghurt, or a white coat that can get a bit muddy, nearly everything is washable, and that’s the important thing to remember.

When people say that hindsight is a wonderful thing, I think they're referring to maternity capsule wardrobes. While I have a 2-year-old, so some time has passed since I was pregnant, I still remember agonising over what to wear and buying pieces that I couldn't get much wear out of as my waistline expanded. (Sequin trousers, I'm looking at you.) I can tell you now with confidence that there are a few things you will probably regret buying when pregnant, and then there are pieces you'll wear way beyond pregnancy. But my one rule is pretty simple when it comes to a maternity wardrobe: Try to find pieces you'll be able to wear now and in the future sans bump. Also, it's worth bearing in mind that while a knitted dress (or three) are very useful when pregnant, they're not so handy if you're breastfeeding.

That said, investing in lots of easy-to-pull-up or -down tops, as well as a few pairs of trousers you can hold on to, is a good idea too. Despite what Instagram shows us, most people don't "bounce back" from having a baby, and it's worth noting that your wardrobe post-baby will probably be a mishmash of things you wore during pregnancy and before. With all of that in mind, I've given a list below of pieces that you'll wear during pregnancy, once your baby is born and even when they're little people wiping yoghurt all over you. Keep scrolling for the 10 items I never regretted buying. 

1. Knitted Dresses

I have two knitted dresses I still wear that you'd never know I wore during pregnancy. One is from Topshop and not maternity, and the other is a maternity-specific dress from ASOS.

2. Down Coat

Nine months is a long time, so chances are, at some point, you'll need a decent puffer coat. It is essential for any wardrobe, to be honest. 

3. Black Roll-Neck

If I had to pick out one item from my pregnancy wardrobe, then it would be the stretchy black roll-neck. I nabbed a Ganni one in the sale just as I was hitting my 18th week, and it has been brilliant. From covering my growing bump to layering under dresses during the winter, this isn't just a staple for your maternity wardrobe but for your "normal" wardrobe too. 

4. A Slip Skirt

I love a good midi skirt, and my favourite has to be a satin one. For a growing bump, find one with an elasticated waist. It's ideal for breastfeeding too. 

5. Comfortable Sandals

More power to you if you can wear heels during pregnancy, but if you feel like you just need something comfy and supportive, a pair of chunky sandals is ideal. It's worth getting them in a half size bigger as your feet can expand during pregnancy (and might even remain that size once you've given birth). 

6. Elasticated-Waist Trousers

Leggings are great and everything (especially towards then end), but they're not always good for making you feel your best. So then, look to more tailored joggers or elasticated-waist leather trousers. 

7. Oversized Blazer

I don't need to tell you that your body is going to change during pregnancy, and you'll probably start to notice that some of the clothes that fit you before no longer reach around the middle. My stellar blazer collection suddenly didn't want to fit, not just around the middle but around my arms too. With that in mind, it's worth investing in an oversize blazer. It'll fit you when pregnant and then be oversize when you're not. 

8. Non-Wire Bra

When you're pregnant, it's advised to wear bras that aren't underwired. I would always go to trusty M&S for a bra like this. It's also worth opting for something budget-friendly, as your bust size might change a lot during pregnancy and then again post-birth. 

9. Oversize Shirt

Whether the classic white or striped or anything else, the oversize shirt is your friend. Wear with leggings (and with chunky sandals) when pregnant and then belt when not.

10. Maternity Jeans

If you like jeans, then there's no escaping the fact that you'll want to invest in a decent pair, and yes, they will have to be maternity ones. I lived in Paige's maternity jeans, but there are some other brilliant options around.

Here’s the thing about maternity clothes—there not often chic. When I was pregnant, I struggled to find pieces I really loved that didn’t look too ‘mumsy’. Just because you’re about to be a parent, it doesn’t mean you have to start wearing things you wouldn’t normally or sacrifice your usual style. With the exception of a few pieces, I ended up turning to other non maternity brands and just sized up. And the brand I ended up shopping at the most? Zara. Who What Wear editor-in-chief, Hannah Almassi was also a fan of Zara during her pregnancy (see her wearing a Zara dress with bump, below), so you can count at least two editors who rate the store for non-maternity maternity wear.

I was pleased to hear that the high street store has launched its maternity range. I spotted that they had a ‘mum’ section for a while but they’ve just started putting together maternity pieces that actually look chic and you’d wear post-pregnancy too. From knitted dresses to oversized coats, they’ve also got a range of jeans that sit under the bump so they’re much easier to continue wearing post pregnancy. Now that the heatwave has subsided and my hot-weather wardrobe of frozen damp towels fashioned into a rather fetching toga has given way to actual clothes, I thought it might be useful for anyone else out there who is pregnant and trying to get dressed for work to see what I've been wearing.

This is my first baby, and I'm clueless about literally every facet of this process—from WTF is the Babyzen Yoyo everyone keeps going on about right now to what to wear on a day-to-day basis. Also, no one ever tells you about the extreme bloat that sets in almost instantaneously. Everything blew up—from my boobs (they inflated overnight from a 30H to a 34G) to my nose.

It was only a few weeks ago that I genuinely started to look pregnant rather than like I'd been on the pork pies (which, incidentally, I really have), and dressing has actually become easier since. And in the beginning, you try to navigate this unfamiliar body without being able to fully embrace looking or feeling pregnant.

I've had to adapt from being someone who wears everything from the '70s with nipped-in or belted silhouettes (items generally fitted around the hips and sitting close to my hourglass figure) to someone who favours comfort, stretch and—perhaps the hardest transition of them all—sensible flat shoes.

What I'm Wearing: Stine Goya Joel Dress (£160); Topshop sandals (on the rare occasion, I'll wear heels for an event)

I just can't do heels anymore (you're advised not to anyway, as it can put your body out of alignment). In addition, my calves, ankles and feet are swelling up a treat each day: By 7 p.m., my legs are like two giant sausages, desperate to burst out of my now-adored Teva sandals. But one has to have a sense of humour about these things, right?

As I already own a ridiculous amount of clothes (the majority of which are now vacuum-packed into bags under my bed, because there's nothing more annoying that items you can't fit into goading you every morning), I've also been reluctant to buy new pieces, particularly those that will only last during this period. So anything fresh that has been purchased has longevity in mind. Maybe one day some of these looser dresses can be reintroduced to the waist-belt collection that's gathering dust or be given a new lease of life with some high-heeled boots come autumn/winter.

Now 30 weeks into this game, I've discovered a few handy tips and tricks that I hope might help anyone who, like me, tends to favour dresses and smart looks over jeans and casual getups of leggings and longer-line tunics. (I haven't stepped anywhere near maternity denim and don't intend to.)

My Top Maternity Style Go-Tos

1. Chunky-soled flat sandals—preferably by Teva. Which is lucky, because they're now in fashion.

2. A basket bag to carry everything (water bottle, portable hand-held fan and snacks are vital).

3. Stretchy dresses I can wear when I'm not pregnant anymore. Make the most of this season's shirring trend.

4. Slip skirts and knotted shirts.

5. Accessories, as they can save even the plainest outfit whether you're pregnant or not. They've really helped me hold onto my style personality.

6. Short or cropped layering tees and vests help with the battle of low-cut tops against enormous maternity bras.

I'm partial to midi dresses with long sleeves anyway, so the fact that there are quite a few available across the high street is really helpful. This twisted, rust-coloured version is from ASOS Maternity, but it's not so big at the front that I couldn't wear it again later on down the line. I'm 5'1'' and already curvy, so jumping into gigantic, voluminous silhouettes will result in me looking like a blob. That means I'm tending to opt for body-con, but I can totally understand why anyone would want to default to sack dresses or loose-fitting dungarees for the pure comfort factor. Gold hoops and a matching necklace have been trusty companions right from the start of my pregnancy.

When we documented the wardrobe of shoe guru Natalia Barbieri, she was in her third trimester and told me all about how she'd come to rely on slip skirts with knotted shirts. I secretly squirrelled that information away for when I'd need it, and it's true: This combination has come in very handy. If you're tall, I'm sure you'd look cracking in a longer, open kind of shirt styling, but as I'm petite and still trying to have some semblance of a waist, I've been knotting and shortening instead. In addition, I've noticed that tucking blouses/shirts into slip skirts when you have a bump creates a lot of bunching underneath the high-shine satin, which can look a bit scruffy.

I bought this stretchy ribbed wrap dress back in April after seeing our columnist Monikh looking so good in it. I knew it would be flexible enough size-wise to last out through my nine months and still be wearable, classic and useful on the other side. As with almost all of the outfits I wear now, I've come to terms with flat shoes and embracing a more comfortable way of life—I've bought two pairs of these chunky-soled Tevas, as well as a grey pair for when black feels too heavy. On my travels, I've discovered that Amazon tends to have the biggest selection of colours and styles.

Co-ords always feel like an outfit with more oomph, but there was something about this brown beach set from Free People that really resonated with me. I liked that it was a long lightweight cardigan over a tube dress so that you have a flexible option for days where the weather is as changeable as your body temperature. Again, hopefully, I won't stretch this out so much that it becomes saggy in a few months' time—I'd really like to wear it again next summer.

Where my personal taste usually leans towards the '70s, I've had to embrace the '90s instead. Layering tees under slip dresses or sleeveless dresses has been essential, as my non-wired maternity bras are so big and visible they practically deserve their own post code. Along with stepping into platform-soled sandals like these (I couldn't find the Tevas in white that I originally wanted), I'm exploring unchartered territory every day!

Meghan Markle returned to her home country for a special occasion: celebrating her baby shower with friends roughly two months before her due date. On Wednesday, Markle concluded her trip by heading to the airport wearing the ultimate travel look: a camel coat, leggings, and running sneakers.

On Tuesday, she was photographed at The Mark Hotel in New York City wearing a low-key outfit, including a vintage Courrèges coat from William Vintage, skinny jeans, nude Stuart Weitzman pumps, oversize sunglasses, and a CH Carolina Herrera tote bag.

Ever since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex officially announced they were expecting their first child, we knew the Meghan Markle's maternity style would be nothing short of polished perfection, and it's certainly living up to our to our expectations so far. Refusing to give up on her sartorial USP, so far, we've seen Markle sport chic tailoring, elegant dresses and pared-back separates, as well as directional pieces like coloured leather and asymmetric hems. The final trimester of a pregnancy can throw fashion hurdles your way, but in these early stages, she proves there's no great need to eschew your usual go-to options. From the early stages of her pregnancy right through to her due date, stick with us as we chart Meghan Markle's maternity style.

Style Notes: Meghan looked the epitome of chic as she visited the Royal Variety Charity's residential nursing and care home at Brinsworth House on 18 December 2018. Wearing a Soia & Kyo robe coat, the duchess opted to leave it open to let her Brock Collection dress shine through. 

Style Notes: Making a surprise appearance at the Fashion Awards on 10 December 2018, Meghan presented Clare Waight Keller, who created her Givenchy wedding gown, with the award for Best British Designer of the Year. Style Notes: On 11 November 2018, Meghan and Prince Harry attended the Centenary of The Armistice Service at Westminster Abbey; their first public appearance together since their Australian tour. For the service, Meghan donned a navy peplum jacket and a matching skirt. 

Style Notes: Another day, another excellent dress choice from Meghan. To visit Macarthur Girls High School in Sydney on 19 October, the duchess opted for a navy sleeveless dress with a powder-blue hem by London Fashion Week designer Roksanda. The nipped-in waist and circle-cut skirt enhance her hourglass silhouette perfectly, with room for bump growth, too.

Style Notes: As part of their Australian tour, Prince Harry and Markle took to Bondi Beach to meet with the local surfing community. For the occasion, she looked bohemian in a striped maxi dress from Martin Grant—the same designer that created the trench she's worn on repeat. We also love her lei.

Style Notes: Much like sister-in-law Kate Middleton, Meghan is good at rewearing, choosing her Martin Grant trench coat on repeat. The duchess continued her strong maternity style streak in Melbourne on 18 October by slinging it over a Club Monaco dress and flat shoes by Rothy's. Simple but chic.

Style Notes: On 18 October, Meghan and Harry continued their tour of Australia, visiting Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens before heading to a reception with local government. To greet fans and meet with the country's politicians, Markle opted for a classic asymmetric dress by Australian designer (kudos, Megs) Dion Lee. Styling it out with her signature Manolo Blahnik pumps and minimal accessories, this is a look we'd gladly emulate any day of the working week.

Style Notes: Our first real glimpse of her off-duty maternity style, Meghan Markle looked chic as she attended a renaming ceremony at Australia's Dubbo Airport on 17 October. For the occasion, Meghan chose a £110 blazer from close friend Serena Williams's clothing line, an untucked shirt by Maison Kitsuné, a pair of dark-wash skinny jeans from Outlander and black suede J.Crew ankle boots. If we were to sum up this look in two words, they'd be "comfortable" and "content."

Style Notes: Seeing as she's only three months along, Meghan Markle can naturally continue to wear non-maternity clothes. This dress, which she wore on 16 October in Sydney, is a prime example of mainline clothing that works for expectant mums. The full pleated skirt on this Brandon Maxwell dress means there's a little room for growth, and you know how much we encourage the rewearing of clothes. Keeping things simple, Meghan chose to accessorise her frock with a pair of butterfly earrings from Princess Diana's personal jewellery collection—a touching tribute.

Style Notes: At their first official engagement since announcing their pregnancy the day prior, Meghan and Harry met the public at Sydney Opera House on 16 October in Sydney. For the occasion, Meghan chose a cream Karen Gee dress, taupe Stuart Weitzman suede shoes, and a versatile Martin Gant trench coat. Meghan clearly knows that sticking to a neutral colour palette is a fail-safe way of looking chic without much effort on her part—a trick to try whether you're expecting or not.

Style Notes: They say hindsight is 20/20, and although we didn't know Meghan was pregnant at the time of Princess Eugenie's wedding in Windsor on 12 October, the fact she fastened the top two buttons on her Givenchy coat to create an A-line silhouette is a sign she was attempting to detract attention from her stomach. Accessorising with a Givenchy bag, Noel Stewart hat and Manolo Blahnik heels, all in a rich navy tone, Meghan once again makes a case for tonal dressing.

Style Notes: While visiting the University of Chichester on 3 October, Meghan was still keeping her pregnancy a secret. Her evergreen leather Hugo Boss skirt might seem like a bold choice, but the rigid fabric actually makes for the perfect mini-bump disguise—how sneaky of you, Megs! Throw in a green shirt from one of our favourite high-street haunts, & Other Stories, and this look is near perfection.

Style Notes: Riding solo, Markle turned to Givenchy—the brand that created her gorgeous wedding dress—once again for an outing on 25 September in London. True to form, the duchess completed her look with Aquazzura heels.

Style Notes: At the time, we wished Meghan would have chosen something more casual to play netball at Loughborough University on 24 September, but seeing as the royals have a penchant for wearing fancy clothes to play sports in, we assumed she was just following suit. However, we now know that her Oscar de la Renta peplum blouse was actually the ideal growing-bump disguise. Paired with Altuzarra trousers and shoes, it made for the ultimate elegant ensemble.

Style Notes: While it's yet to be confirmed, we suspect this outing on 6 September in London was one of the first for the couple after they found out they were expecting. Naturally, Meghan finished her look with a complimenting Dior bag and Aquazzura heels. Oh, to have the wardrobe of a duchess.

The appeal of affordable maternity clothing isn't lost on Pippa Middleton. We all know A-list sisters love a classic high street purchase as much as the next person. The expectant, first-time mother stepped out today in a dress from Séraphine that was printed and clinched slightly above her waist. This neat maternity style is simple enough to wear on repeat throughout her pregnancy, but what's more is that it was recently reduced from £65 to £39.

As other parents-to-be might agree, shopping for maternity clothes you're only going to wear for nine (ish) months is kind of a pain. And that's why we love seeing such a stylish example on Middleton that also doesn't break the bank, making it a bit easier to wear for a short period of time or pass along to a friend after you're done with it. Bridal designer Tina Mak specialises in maternity wedding dresses, and though the collection may be small, it’s the place to head for fashion-forward touches like the (optional) black accent on this strapless silk chiffon Jean gown, £980. Based in the U.S., Tina Mak ships internationally.

If you’re looking for a colourful wedding dress, try the Maya Maternity occasion collection. Pastels are the key feature, while you’ll find floaty styles, sequinned sleeves and tulle skirts galore. Conveniently, ASOS carries a great selection, like this Sequin Cape Tulle Skirt Maxi, £120.

Much loved by the Duchess of Cambridge during her pregnancies, Séraphine also carries a small yet impressive wedding collection. We love this Grecian-inspired Multi-Way Gown, £255, which can be worn as a one-shouldered style or with the chiffon cap sleeves.

Perhaps not the first place you’d think of when wedding dress shopping, fashion label Little Mistress does a super-affordable, trend-led maternity collection with several bridal-esque styles each season. The sequin bodice on this £65 high-neck maxi has caught our eye, and to make things even easier, you can shop via ASOS.

Another bridesmaid focused label, U.S.-based Dessy (you’ll find several UK stockists on its website) still has great options for brides who aren’t looking for traditional gowns. This strapless metallic gown is a perfect example, though it’s a tough choice between the silver and rose-gold versions. ■

I mean, there's the fact that Meghan Markle announced her pregnancy this week, but as someone whose closest friendship circle is currently full of pregnant and/or new mothers, I'm already well on my way to learning a lot about the joys and the trials of having a bun in the oven. I'm also an editor who is always on the lookout to help those in need of fashion advice (that's the reason we set up our private Facebook group, So… Should I Buy This?, which you can be a part of), so I'm acutely aware that this is one of the trickiest times to know what to wear, what to buy and how to feel like yourself.

In some ways, we can be thankful for the rise of social media and the sharing habits of pregnant women on Instagram: it can provide some IRL intel and inspiration. On the flip-side, there's the chance that an unrealistic and unobtainable view on how one might be expected to look during those nine months can be portrayed instead, which seems rather stress-inducing.

Rather than blindly plucking pictures from the internet without any knowledge or context, I sought out expert information. That help comes in the form of super-stylist and Who What Wear UK columnist, Avigail Collins. Her little boy, Che Bobby, is now a (very very adorable) toddler, so she's able to look back on that time with total fashion clarity—noting what worked, what didn't and offering some solid instructions around the basics of feeling right in your maternity fashion choices.

1. Shop for what you'd normally buy, only bigger. At Zara, for example, she opted for the kind of items she'd normally buy but a few sizes larger. Post-maternity, you can often style out oversized pieces in relatively simple ways (tucking in big shirts, belting bigger dresses, etc.).

2. Stretchy fabrics are key. "I took a leaf out of Kim Kardashian West's book and found the Wolford stretchy boob-tube dresses did look fitted and chic. Some people don't like doing it, but for me, it just worked with my curves," Avigail Collins tells us. "I was seven months pregnant when I wore it first and it still fits me now and I've lost all my baby weight. I wore it once as a dress and once as a skirt, and it works really well as a skirt with an oversized shirt."

3. Long layers and open shirts or cardigans are reliable. "During pregnancy, the thing I wore the most—and I heard this from a lot of other pregnant women—was long cardigans and open shirts. You just get wider and wider around the bum and the hip area. You find that with any top you buy, the bigger you get and the more it rises, so you end up looking like you're in a crop top. I didn't want that for work, so having a long cardigan saved me. I invested and went quite expensive with a Dries van Noten one and an Acne Studios one, and I lived in them. When I'm not pregnant, I'm happy with high street, but I wanted something that was really nice and 'a piece,'" says Collins.

4. You don't have to wear leggings if you don't want to. Avigail advises in the one maternity-specific item you should really buy: jeans. If you're not a leggings girl at heart, there are other options out there, like cool track pants, for example. She says, "Something that really helped at the four- to five-month stage was a look I did with oversized velour wide-leg tracksuit bottoms from Zara (with an elastic waistband), which I wore with little thin knits."

5. Why not experiment with menswear? Avigail doesn't think you need a dedicated "maternity" coat, and that instead, you're better off looking in the men's department for something with a little room. "Why would you need a maternity coat? Why is there a market for that? Can't you just wear a man's coat or oversized faux fur? I wore a man's shearling jacket and I didn't understand why people would think I'd need a maternity coat!" says Collins. The bonus is that afterwards you can use these in the depths of winter for layering purposes, but also it's very chic to belt a big overcoat into shape.

6. Your feet will expand, so your shoe choices have to as well. "I wore Gucci loafers before my feet expanded, and then I wore Nike Air Max trainers, which is funny because I'm not a trainer girl," says Avigail. "My feet got so wide and they were so much comfier. I lived in them, so I got two pairs: a velvet pair and a black shiny pair." As her maternity developed, she found that her swollen feet would only be comfortable in Adidas slides (which the hospital nurses thought were ultra-stylish). This is harder to do during the colder months, but if you can find wider, roomier boots and shoes (many stores now offer wide-fit options), there should be a solution.

7. Little accessories are key. "Something I did a lot during my pregnancy in the spring months was wear a bandana or beret. All of my clothes were really plain and it made my outfits more chic and interesting," says Collins.
