Calling myself a "shopping expert" is not a role that I take lightly, and as Who What Wear's shopping editor, believe me when I say there is plenty of legwork involved. Fortunately, I happen to love spending hours in the shops searching for the kind of hidden gems that I know you'll love, and if you're in rush and want to know where to find the best designer pieces on the market right now, allow to me to share with you some of the best new-in pieces to land this month. And trust me, there are some really good ones. 

While I am a fully fledged high-street devotee, it's always exciting to look through the latest luxury collections and be able to shop designer pieces straight from the runway. So this week, I headed into some of our favourite luxury stores (think MATCHESFASHION, Selfridges, Browns and Liberty) to scour the shelves for some new investment buys that would be perfect for the sunnier spring season ahead and beyond. 

With the current forecast in mind, I was on the hunt for spring-ready colours, textures and fabrics that are still warm enough for the unseasonably chilly temperatures we've been experiencing. After trying on plenty of coats, knits, dresses, and of course, accessories, I've found 10 pieces guaranteed to make getting ready in the morning that little bit better. From the ultimate wedding guest dress to the staple blazer that everyone will love, I've reviewed ten designer pieces that are worth spending a little extra on, and that I'm sure you'll love for years to come. 1. THE BELTED COAT 

Style Notes: As much as we'd like for spring to have been dress-and-sandals weather, we aren't there quite yet, but if you are in need for a transitional layer, I've found the perfect solution. Raey's belted coat has a light, trench feel while still being substantial (it's 100% virgin wool), so its ideal for wearing over dresses or with knits and skirts if it's really cold. Trenches and wrap coats never go out of style, and this manages to combine the best of both worlds in one easy piece that you'll want to wear on repeat.

Style Notes: If there's one spring/summer piece you can incorporate into your wardrobe no matter the temperature, it has to be the raffia basket bag. Style Notes: I first spotted this candyfloss co-ord during Copenhagen Fashion Week, and while my first thoughts were "how cute!", my second was "it's probably itchy." I'm happy to report this cloud soft combo is fluffy rather than hairy, so rather than being itchy, it's strokeably soft. Head-to-toe pink might not be for everyone, but this is has the benefit of looking just as good broken into separates. The mohair knit would look adorable with blue jeans or a slip skirt, and the cosy skirt would be great with a cream knit or cardigan, so when you think of the versatility, it makes even more sense.

4. THE PRINTED DRESS

Style Notes: I'm firmly in dress scouting mode, and whether you're looking for a summer dress, wedding guest dress, holiday dress or party dress, I think this Christopher Kane piece ticks a lot of boxes. Green is a key colour trend this spring/summer and there's no ignoring this bold take on abstract florals, especially with some gold jewellery and a knee-high boot. Did I mention it comes in white exclusively to MATCHES too?

5. THE KNIT MIDI DRESS 

Style Notes: Calling this a "jersey" dress does it a disservice as the fabric is so thick that feels more like fine knit. The stretchy material has all of the hold and support of a bandage dress (albeit with far more breathing room), so even without shapewear, it creates a smooth, flattering silhouette. I'd expect nothing less from The Row, who are masters of sleek, understated pieces that come alive as soon as you put them on, and what looked like a very simple dress on the hanger turned out to be a real knockout that looks effortlessly elegant. 6. THE SPRING BLAZER 

Style Notes: Who What Wear readers will recognise The Frankie Shop's Gelso blazer as it's been a team favourite since it first landed. As much as we've enjoyed the beige, the black, and they grey colourways, something about the sunnier season signifies the re-introduction of colour to our wardrobes, and nothing says "spring" quite like cherry blossom pink. While I was tempted by the full pink three-piece, the hero of the suit is undoubtedly the boxy oversized blazer that you'll wear with everything from maxi dresses to wide-leg trousers, and if you are shopping online there's no need to size up. Frankie Shop have done the hard work and tailored the perfect oversized fit to take out the guesswork.

7. THE LEATHER DRESS 

Style Notes: Before you read "leather dress" and immediately rule it out, allow me to explain why this nappa dress is one of the best things I've worn recently. First of all, the quality of the leather. Buttery soft, light as a feather nappa that feels smooth on the skin (and not at all clingy), so if you thought that a leather dress would be a sticky nightmare, rest assured–it's not a possibility. Then there's the shape. a roomy, puff sleeved fit that you can draw in at the waist, or leave flowing and spacious, both equally good options. And finally, the colour. The site describes it as "salmon" but in reality it's more of a creamy peach not too far from nude, but whatever you want to call it, it sure does look expensive, and granted, it is. But one thing you can guarantee about leather is longevity, and while cotton or wool can rip or wear, this polished midi dress will still look as good in 5 years time as it does now.

8. THE BALLET FLATS 

Style Notes: We've called it, the ballet shoe is officially the shoe of spring 2023, and while there are more options than ever cropping up on the high-street, it's always better to pay a little bit more for quality that you know will last rather than paying to replace the same pair of flats time and again–enter Le Monde Beryl. Both Tilda Swinton and Alexa Chung have been snapped in Le Monde pumps (and Alexa in no fewer than 4 different pairs), so you know these are a style and a brand that come celebrity approved.

9. THE CLASSIC BLAZER

Style Notes: Back to blazers, but this time something a little more classic, Toteme's double breasted jacket. It doesn't get more timeless than camel tailoring, and this slouchy jacket is a little more fluid than the Frankie Shop's Gelso for those who prefer a relaxed fit over structure and shoulder pads. I'm currently obsessed with wide-leg indigo denim, so if I wasn't wearing this with a maxi dress, it'd be a white t-shirt and high-waisted jeans. Trés chic.

Style Notes: Cashmere is always a wise investment, but this springy green cardigan from Gabriela Hearst feels more exciting than another navy jumper. Ever since Katie Holmes singlehandedly upped the cool factor of the cardigan it's been steadily overtaking the crew neck as the knit of choice, and worn slightly unbuttoned with a midi skirt and chunky sandals, you've got an easy spring look that will rise to meet any dress code. You'd be forgiven for thinking that fashion people all love to shop showy, high-end designer pieces. When scrolling through street style galleries of fashion week sightings, TikTok closet tours or Instagram feeds, it can be hard to see past all the logos and cult buys a lot of the time. But surprisingly (and I speak for most of us fashion-types here, not all) that isn't actually how we dress day to day. Truth be told, a lot of those flashy pieces are probably loaned or rented for an occasion, or, for the lucky ones, gifted. In fact, those that I know (or follow religiously on social media) actually dress pretty low-key 90% of the time, tapping into quiet luxury brands and even premium high street winners that will last far beyond a single season.

Often these low-key brands fashion people actually choose to spend their own money on are cards kept close to their chests—spread by word of mouth over industry dinner tables and like whispers down fashion week front rows. Raey is the in-house label from ultra-chic London department store MATCHESFASHION. It first launched back in 2015 (I remember the buzz well) and over the past seven years they've continued, more or less under the radar, producing seasonless capsule wardrobe staples that industry insiders can't seem to get enough of. Think premium quality luxury buys, from grey cashmere knits to chunky wool or shearling coats, at reasonable, mid-range prices—and not a logo in sight.

Calling myself a "shopping expert" is not something I take lightly, and believe me when I say there is a lot of legwork involved. Fortunately for me, I happen to love spending hours in the shops looking for the kind of hidden gems that I know you'll love, and if you're in rush and want to know where to find the best pieces on the market right now, allow to me to share with you some of the best new-in pieces to land this month. And trust me, there are some good ones. 

While I am a fully fledged high-street devotee, it's always exciting to look through the latest luxury collections and be able to shop designer pieces straight from the runway. So this week, I headed into MATCHESFASHION.COM, Browns, Selfridges and Liberty to scour the shelves for some new investment buys that would be perfect for the season ahead. 

With autumnal dressing in mind, I've been on the hunt for the best coats, knitwear, denim and accessories to make getting ready in the morning feel that little bit better, and these are all of the pieces that really stood out. From a shearling coat to the best jeans for every body (there are even some sparkles in the mix too), I've reviewed eight designer pieces that are worth spending a little extra on, and just in time for payday.

1. THE SHEARLING COAT 

Style Notes: I happen to be one of those people who are always cold and so naturally gravitate to summer, but autumn is the best excuse to wrap up in cosy knits and fluffy coats. A case in point: This Mongolian shearling jacket. An ultra-soft, super-strokeable coat that, I have to add, did not shed at all and I would wear with everything from evening dresses to casual jeans. Granted, I was incredibly warm on a sunny afternoon, but that is a testament to its cosiness (and the knit dress underneath), and it's one I'm adding to my winter wish list for when the temperatures drop.

2. THE LEATHER JACKET 

Style Notes: I love leather, especially skirts and dresses, but one piece I never seem to get right is the leather jacket. The closest I've come is an oversized vintage biker jacket that is incredibly heavy (and hot) and manages to be a pain to slog around, but this lightweight jacket is a game changer. Not only is it slightly quilted and just padded enough to be insulating but not bulky, but the colour and detailing make it feel like less of the "typical" leather jacket and something altogether more premium. The only downside? More colours, please, Nanushka. This would be great in black or camel.

3. THE STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS 

Style Notes: Let's talk about jeans because, frankly, I find trying on denim one of the worst things I could be asked to do. Really it's all down to our shape rather than our sizes (just try on one size in four different shops, and you'll know that to be true), and as someone whose hips and thighs are far bigger than my waist, I'm used to denim doing the dreaded gaping at the back and clinging at the thighs. Thankfully, brands are cottoning on, and at Browns, there is an extensive range of jeans that really do cater to all shapes and sizes, including Citizens of Humanity, which managed to convince me into a slim leg for the first time in years. There's a pleasing amount of stretch to these jeans, which gives them sculpting effect, and for those of average height (I'm 5'6"), the hem hits in exactly the right spot.

4. THE ZIP-UP JUMPER

Style Notes: Love jumpers but bored of crew-necks? I'm all about a zip-up collar. Not only do they layer well under a coat with the collar out over the lapels, but they're also a great means of necessary ventilation. Isabel Marant has been getting these knits right for years, and the latest green colourway scores highly with me, a chic seasonal tone that pairs perfectly with leather, skirts, denim, even over the floral dress you wore all summer. Just add knee-high boots.

Style Notes: If the chunky Isabel Marant knit was perfect for battling the cold, this fine-knit is an example of how to wear a knit that feels a little more dressed up. I love the idea of styling with a suede skirt and boots, but it's also thin enough to fit under a blazer.

5. THE WOOL COAT 

Style Notes: I think it's fair to say that there is a Rick Owens customer—an avant-garde, experimental dresser who loves a sculptural silhouette—and until I tried this coat, I wouldn't have included myself in that group. I will be honest. There were some tricky moments getting into this coat. It's essentially an easy, belted wrap coat that comes with a separate scarf-stroke-collar-stroke panel that wraps all the way around to create an extra layer. I found it near impossible to wear in the same way as the model, as tugging this giant snood down to your elbow entirely restricts the use of your arms. However, pull it up to the collarbone, and hey presto, it mimics the scarf-coat shape that team Who What Wear is currently obsessed with.

6. THE CROPPED JEANS 

Style Notes: Back to jeans to pique my interest in one brand in particular, Khloé Kardashian's Good American. Among fellow editors, I heard it was the denim brand to try, and after trying them on for myself, I understand why. Again, the key to these is their elasticity (the newest collection even allows you to shop the different levels of sculpting compression), but here, I tried the regular straight leg that comes with a high enough waist to eliminate the waist gap so I needn't worry about bending over (of course, a Kardashian would have considered tailoring to a good bum-to-waist ratio). What remains to be seen is how they will continue to perform after being repeatedly worn, but they do score bonus points for their excellent size range of 0 to 24.

7. THE SEQUIN SKIRT 

Style Notes: I can't be the only person who feels instantly happier by the prospect of sparkles, and the moment I saw this skirt, I knew I had to try it on. There is a matching top to this co-ord if you wanted to do head-to-toe shine, but until I have somewhere to wear quite so much glitter, I would pair it with a chunky knit. Is it too early to mention Christmas parties?

8. THE MERINO COAT 

Style Notes: Another brilliant coat, this time from Joseph. An easy, uncomplicated, perfect teddy coat in a surprisingly flattering shade of blush. I would usually stick to neutrals when buying a coat to make sure it would go with everything in my wardrobe, but this is just the right warm-toned shade to be almost beige, so I think that counts. My recommendation here is to size up to make the most of a cuddly, slouchy fit rather than true to size.

9. THE INVESTMENT BAG

Style Notes: Thanks to Daniel Lee, we can't think of Bottega Veneta without thinking about killer bags and shoes. The Jodie, the Pouch, the Arco tote and the Macramé pumps all inspired a legion of copies, and the originals now have a cult following. At a similar price to Loewe and around half the price of a Chanel bag, the Cassette is one of the favourites, and the latest drop has treated us to some exciting new colourways like this oxblood burgundy. An ideal everyday bag for its shape and size and a much better trend than the teeny, tiny micro bag.

Style Notes: Wait, is that rain? Well, if you live in the UK, it almost certainly is, but fear not. The wellington boot has undergone a fashionable makeover. Big, chunky-soled welly-inspired boots were one of the more unexpected shoe trends to stomp down the runways this season, and while it might be a controversial choice, there's no denying their practicality. Whether you're dodging puddles or dancing the night away at a festival, it's time to hang up your Hunters and invest in a supersized fashion rain boot. Just don't expect any rubber.

7. THE FRESH PRINTS 

Style Notes: Animal prints! Jacquard! Logo mania! It's all fair game if want your shoes to make a statement. This isn't a trend for wallflowers, as by their nature, printed boots stand out from the crowd. But if head-to-toe print isn't quite your thing (sorry, Dries Van Noten), these boots are the pop of colour—well, print—that an all-black ensemble needs to feel that much more fashion forward.

Ever since Miuccia Prada succeeded in her mission to revive the noughties miniskirt, the teeny micro mini has remained a a prominent part of our wardrobes. Ultra-small skirts from denim to A-line to pleated variations continue to have a moment in the fashion world, especially in the current leg-baring weather. The miniskirt as a concept is all well and good, but once you slip into one, one of the biggest dilemmas is assessing which shoes to wear.

School uniforms might have us believing that ballerinas are the sole shoe option for the short skirt, but there are many contenders to pair with teeny styles. Prada demonstrated this best with a playful element and balance of proportions: styling its miniskirt with chunky loafers and mid-calf socks to offset micro inches. The miniskirt has since been styled with every type of shoe, including knee-high boots, trainers and slip-on sandals. French women are a shining example of how best to wear the miniskirt trend. They've inherited the micro mini as part of their uniform, preferring to wear it with loafers and slingbacks and proving that you can integrate classic shoes with risqué styles to create a look you can wear with ease during the day.

When deciding which shoes are best, you want to deduce what vibe you're going for and build from there. For evening looks, the combination of a miniskirt paired with patent knee-high boots will transcend seasons and trends. For daytime, trainers or flip-flops lean towards the minimalistic Scandi aesthetic, while a loafer adds a put together feel.

When the weather is this glorious, all I want to do is shop. Don't get me wrong—I like to bask in the sun as much as the next Brit, but if you see me sweating on my sun-lounger scrolling my phone, odds are I'm not reloading Instagram for the 14th time that morning (honestly!) but am in fact scanning the new-in section at MATCHESFASHION.

There's something about this time of year that really makes me thirsty for newness. We're in the middle of summer, so whilst sensible summer purchases are still in the cards, a new season is just around the corner.

There's always a slip dress or two (just because they're so easily layered below a blazer or cardigan), and I've recently really gotten into knit dresses (I'm particularly loving the jersey and crochet kind), which I'd argue have a different purpose than a slip—they're thicker and are therefore ideal for breezy beach days or cooler autumnal morning walks to the office.

A brand that's always a go-to for all of the above is Gabriela Hearst. Based in New York but born in Uruguay, the brand draws inspiration from the Hearst family's Latin American ranch, where all the pieces are carefully crafted. Think folky, full-length shawls with tassels, saddle-hook belts and a red, orange and blue palette to reflect the region's coastlines and landscapes. The Frankie Shop has become one of the most illustrious fashion brands of the decade, amassing a cult following as a result of its luxe-casual loungewear at entry-level designer price points. Since its inception, The Frankie Shop has released bite-sized capsules adored by everyone from Paris to New York and beyond.

Former journalist Gaëlle Drevet founded The Frankie Shop with a minimalistic aesthetic at the forefront in 2014. The brand specialises in tailoring, separates and core basics, and each garment is designed with the minimalist sartorialist in mind. This Gelso collection is my favourite to date. It comprises tencel, rayon and wool, which are mindfully curated and suitable for the transitional forecast. The mid-weight, free-flowing suits can be worn uniform or separately. Like most Frankie Shop pieces, the overarching theme of simplicity in this collection has inspired its unostentatious offerings. There's a strong '80s influence entwined with a modern city-girl aesthetic (a distinguishable feature of the brand).

The prominence of muted colour in the seasonal forecast didn't escape The Frankie Shop's grasp, as the current collection paved way for candied hues amongst the dulcet and ashy tones the brand is best known for.
