I've spent the best part of my beauty career perfecting my "no makeup" makeup look, and if I'm being honest, more often than not, this doesn't involve mascara. I've tried some of the best mascaras out there, from affordable mascaras to tubing formulas and even mascaras for sensitive eyes, but I find that they make my makeup look a little too "done". Well, that was the case until I discovered a small collection of natural-looking mascaras that took my "no makeup" makeup game to the next level.

So, I made it my mission to test some of the best formulas that promised a natural-looking finish, and these are the six mascaras that delivered. 1. Merit Clean Lash Mascara

This Merit Beauty formula is one of my most-used mascaras, as it's so great for daily wear. Not only does it look chic, but the tubing mascara lengthens and lifts every lash without budging. Although the brush isn't small, it is great at coating and separating each lash for that natural, fluttery look that I love so much. Plus, it can easily be removed with just a bit of warm water.

2. Lisa Eldridge Kitten Lash Mascara

I love using a brown mascara for a "no makeup" makeup look, as it's just that little bit softer. This one from Lisa Eldridge is my favourite, as the warm brown hue looks simply stunning. The formula itself delivers a featherlight finish for a natural, almost sultry result, but you could also build it up a bit if you wanted to. It's a little more expensive than others on the market, but trust me, it's totally worth it.

3. L'Oréal Paris Paradise Mascara

We all know that L'Oréal mascaras are some of the best on the high street, and this is my personal favourite for an everyday look. Don't be afraid that it has castor oil in it. Trust me, it doesn't smudge and never feels greasy. The formula is actually a great option for sensitive eyes. The brush is ideal for lengthening and defining the lashes, and the fluttery effect always earns me compliments.

4. Refy Lash Sculpt

This Refy mascara broke the internet when it launched thanks to the unique wand. However, it truly is amazing at creating a natural-lash effect. It can take a little while to get used to applying it, but the curved shape means that the wand coats every single lash with not a single clump in sight. It lengthens, separates and lifts the lashes, awakening the whole eye area whilst making it look as if you're barely wearing any mascara. Genius.

5. Blink Brow Bar Lash Lift Tubing Mascara

Tubing mascaras are great as they don't smudge, but are so easy to remove. One of my favourites for a natural lash look is this one from Blink Brow Bar. It comes in two shades and really lifts and lengthens the lashes whilst keeping them looking soft and fluttery. It's the sort of mascara that will have people second-guessing whether you've had a lash lift or if your natural lashes are just that good. Don't worry, your secret is safe with me.

6. Makeup By Mario Master Mascara

I keep this mascara in my makeup bag at all times. The reason why? One coat gives a super natural, soft finish, but, if suddenly you're heading out in the evening and want a more statement makeup look, it's easily buildable for a false-lash effect. It's just a great all-rounder that I know I can rely on daily. Plus, it doesn't clump and never smudges. 10/10.

Out of all the makeup brands out there, Merit Beauty is at the top of my list. Merit Clean Volume Mascara

Clean Volume is a tubing mascara designed to volumise lashes without clumping. Whilst many volumising mascaras feature a large wand with long bristles, Clean Volume has a notably more nimble, flexible comb wand. As someone with deep-set, hooded eyes, this is a total game-changer, as so many bulky wands ultimately transfer product onto my lids or under my eyes. However, it doesn't compromise on volume. This small comb wand, however, catches every lash and deposits just the right amount of product as you sweep it through, helping to give you defined yet full lashes and plenty of length, too. No spidery lashes here.

The tubing formula means that not only does it withstand flaking, smudging or crumbling throughout the day, but it removes effortlessly with just warm water—it just slides off your lashes between your fingertips.

Before and After

As you can see, this mascara delivers on its promises of volumising, without looking heavy or spidery. This is just with one coat, but if you're after a more dramatic effect, it's easily layered up for more intensity without turning clumpy. I like to curl my lashes prior to applying my mascara, and if you have short or straight lashes, I'd recommend not skipping this step.

Clean Lash vs Clean Volume

If you're stuck between which formula to go for, or want to know if you need Clean Volume in your makeup bag too, there are a few key differences to know. Clean Lash delivers a fluttery, natural-looking look, and features a classic bristled wand that gives a feathery-looking flutter. IMO, it's the perfect everyday mascara.

Clean Volume, on the other hand, delivers a more defined yet volumised look. Think more sleek and spiky in the best way. The wand is also flexible in comparison and features tiny bristles that are small yet mighty at delivering the pigment to your lashes. Whichever one you go for, you now have the option of black or brown in each.

Personally, I can justify having both in my makeup bag. Clean Lash remains my favourite everyday mascara, but come evenings when I want a bolder eye look, I'll definitely be switching to Clean Volume for more drama.

My Verdict

Having now tested Clean Volume after the past couple of weeks, I have to say I'm impressed. I'm usually not one for volumising mascara formulas (I personally favour lengthening and curling mascaras), however, Merit Beauty's innovative brush has converted me. It makes it easy to get fuller lashes without running the risk of overloading with too much product, and I also love how long and defined it leaves my lashes, too. It feels light and flexible on my lashes, without feeling heavy like some mascaras do. Oh, and it's a total dream to remove at the end of the day; it just melts away in the shower. If you're in the market for a new mascara that delivers on volume, then I'd highly recommend it.

For as long as I can remember, I've always had watery eyes, and I've always loved eye makeup. However, the two don't go well together. All it takes is a slight gust of wind or a sudden change in temperature, and my watery eyes stream and ruin my makeup.

And if you're anything like me, you've probably had your eye makeup ruined on more than one occasion thanks to those rogue tears that seemingly come from nowhere and melt away eyeliner and eyeshadow in their wake. I've lost count of the number of times a soft, smoky wing has disappeared. I have watery eyes year-round, but with hayfever season in full swing right now, I've been on a quest to find out how to stop watery eyes from ruining my makeup, once and for all.

So, I enlisted the help of Dr Elizabeth Hawkes, a consultant oculoplastic surgeon and ophthalmologist, to find out the causes of watery eyes and how to stop them from ruining your eye makeup.

What Causes Watery Eyes?

"Blepharitis is the number one cause of dry eye, which is an umbrella term that encompasses lots of symptoms, i.e., redness or a gritty or foreign body sensation and, ironically, dry eyes as the eye makes excess tears when dry," says Dr Hawkes. "There can be many causes, such as allergies, medical conditions or as a result of certain oral medications, but it’s always best to see an eye specialist or an optician as there are subtle differences."

Blocked Tear Ducts: "If it’s just one eye, it could be a blocked tear duct. If you have a blockage, you will have a watery eye, which can be caused by trauma to the tear duct. It can be congenital or caused by an infection, but it needs a thorough assessment," says Dr Hawkes. "A common test eye specialists conduct is to ask patients if their eyes are watering indoors and outdoors. If they water indoors, it’s highly suggestive of blockage. If it’s a duct blockage, you need surgery, but it depends on what layer or level the obstruction is at, as this determines how invasive it needs to be," she adds.

Dry Eyes: "If it’s blepharitis and associated dry eye—watery eye syndrome—the mainstay of treatment is ironically with lubricating eye drops, which can be a tricky concept for patients to get their heads around," says Dr Hawkes. "This is because the more lubricated the ocular surface is, the less likely you are to trigger the lacrimal gland to produce tears." Eye drops can help to rehydrate the eyes and prevent them from overcompensating with excessive tears.

Allergies: "If it’s allergy-related, it needs to be investigated and looked at for the cause. Either way, there are lots of different eye drop options available to the different causes that can all treat the condition efficiently," she says.

Can Makeup Make Watery Eyes Worse?

Depending on the cause of your watery eyes, you may find that makeup can exacerbate symptoms. "Blepharitis is the most common cause, which causes blockage of the meibomian glands, which are specialised glands in between the eyelashes, that secrete an oily layer of tear film," says Dr Hawkes. "They open on the waterline, so when you apply eyeliner or mascara, you’re irritating and directly blocking these glands," she says.

"Generally, I would avoid using eyeliner on the waterline and use products suitable for sensitive skin. Clinique has a brilliant 'eye safety promise’ as the products undergo rigorous testing on how they affect the ocular surface, which not many brands do," she says. "Be cautious with application and always remove eye makeup properly, especially if you have sensitive eyes."

How to Stop Watery Eyes From Ruining Makeup

Preventing watery eyes is the key step to minimise the risk of them ruining your eye makeup, and there are some preventative steps you can take to reduce watery eyes.

Cleanse the Eyes: "Much like a thorough skincare routine and ensuring your skin is in a healthy condition to create a good base for makeup, proper cleansing and care of the eye is key here," says Dr Hawkes. "Ophthalmologists call it ‘lid hygiene’, and this is a must, removing in between the lashes morning and evening to ensure glands don’t get blocked," she says. "Optase Life Sensitive Eye Makeup Remover (£10) is a great one. It has no harsh surfactants that affect the lipid layer on the eyes and does a great job at thoroughly removing makeup."

Practice Good Makeup Hygiene: "Having good makeup hygiene is vital. This includes removing makeup properly, cleaning your brushes, not keeping mascara for years or using expired or dried-out products," she says. Typically, you should replace your mascara every 3-6 months, cream eyeshadows every 12-18 months and powder eyeshadows every 1-2 years. As a general rule of thumb, cream formulations tend to expire more quickly, so go through your makeup bag and check the expiry dates on the products you're using. Additionally, ensure you're regularly washing your makeup brushes, too.

Opt for Cream Eye Makeup: Whilst Dr Hawkes doesn't flag any particular ingredients to avoid in your makeup, she does favour cream over powder formulas. "Specific ingredients in makeup aren’t as important; however, I always advise cream-based eyeshadows and makeup, because powder particles might go into the eye and cause irritation," she says.

Eye Makeup to Avoid: Having spoken to makeup artists over the years, I've learned that it's best to avoid eyeshadows with glitter or shimmer, as they can cause fallout and further irritate the eyes. As for your lashes, tubing mascaras are great as they're long-wearing, but remove easily from the eyes with warm water. Waterproof mascaras are great for avoiding smudges; however, they are more difficult to remove, so look for a good eye makeup remover to fully remove them.

Look for Eye-Safe Brands: "Additionally, I recommend products and brands that have been tested, much like Clinique’s eye safety promise," she says. Look for brands and products that have been ophthalmologist-tested to minimise eye irritation. Additionally, if you're a contact lens wearer, Dr Hawkes says that this can cause problems in itself, so be very mindful to take extra care of your eyes. She also recommends avoiding eyelash extensions if you're prone to issues.

If your watery eyes persist, always seek medical advice. "If you leave anything too long, it can affect your vision, so it’s best to be safe and cautious when it comes to your eyesight," says Dr Hawkes.

How to Fix Eye Makeup

Whether it's a windy day or there is a high pollen count on an important occasion, there are times when smudged eye makeup just needs to be fixed. I've lost count of the number of times I've had my makeup professionally done for a wedding or special occasion, only for it to be ruined by my watering eyes. Here are my tips for fixing it.

Dab, don't rub: Avoid rubbing the area and instead dab with a tissue to remove any excess tears. Often, the area can become dry, so you can rehydrate the area with a sensitive skin-friendly eye cream. This will help to hydrate and soothe any irritation around the eyes. For quick fixes, a Q-tip can help clean up smaller smudges, or you can use a small makeup brush to tidy up smudged eyeliner wings.

Fix the Base: If the situation requires you to fully reapply the makeup, there are a few things you can do. Applying a little concealer can help create a gripper canvas for eye makeup, and it can then be fixed with a pressed setting powder to create a waterproof barrier. Applying with a puff rather than a brush is best to avoid particles from going into the eyes. Tap onto the skin to set the concealer.

Apply Eye Makeup: Waterproof eyeliners or long-wearing eyeshadows (such as cream-to-powder formulas) will provide the best wear. You can also apply a small amount of powder eyeshadow over a cream formula to set your eye makeup. Just ensure the area is fully dry from tears; otherwise, the eye makeup won't adhere. Then, you can apply a setting spray to help lock it in (just keep your eyes closed when you're misting, of course!).

Carry the Essentials: Keep some of your core products with you in case it needs fixing or topping up throughout the day. Alongside your makeup, eye drops or mists can help refresh the eyes throughout the day, and sunglasses are useful for shielding eyes from gusts of wind, or even hiding smudged eye makeup as a last resort.

Best Products for Watery Eyes

Everyone has their own very specific preferences when it comes to their mascara. Some want a lengthening mascara, whereas others prefer a volumising formula to add bulk to each lash. Some swear by flexible comb wands, whereas others will only let bristle wands near their eyelashes. Personally, I'm all for curling mascaras to help my stubbornly straight eyelashes. However, I've always found it hard to find a mascara that keeps them standing to attention all day long. And that's where lifting mascaras come in.

Previously, I would usually rely on a waterproof mascara to lock the curl in place; however, let's be honest. They can be a pain to remove without a good makeup remover. Some curling mascaras work for me, but some just don't cut it for my stick-straight lashes. However, lifting mascaras do all the heavy lifting, keeping the lashes up from the root for a wide-eyed look.

However, with so many mascaras around, it can be hard to find one that really works. Thankfully, I'm able to test so many mascaras for my job as a beauty editor, so I've listed the best lifting mascaras I've tried below. Trust me, your eyelashes won't flop with these lash-lifting formulas.

1. Lancôme Lash Idôle Mascara

Honestly, I love all of Lancôme's mascaras, but when it comes to lifting and holding a curl, this is the best one. The curved, flexible wand glides through lashes, lifting, lengthening and defining each one with a silky, featherlight formula that feels soft and comfortable to the touch. One coat delivers a subtle, lifted finish, while a second adds extra drama without any clumping in sight. It’s not the most volumising option out there, but if you lean towards a more naturally defined lash look, you won't be disappointed.

2. Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara

You may have heard a lot of hype around the Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara, and I'm here to tell you that it's justified. Featuring a flexible comb with two bristle lengths, the shorter side works to lift lashes from the root, while the longer, comb-like bristles help to lengthen and separate, and it keeps your lashes lifted all day. It's not technically a tubing mascara formula, but it completely melts away with just warm water between your fingertips, and it's a great mascara for sensitive eyes, too. Available in both black and brown, this mascara is packed with lash-conditioning ingredients like shea butter and beeswax to help keep lashes soft and healthy.

3. L'Oréal Paris Paradise Big Deal Mascara

I couldn't believe my lashes when I tried this mascara. Admittedly, I've layered up with a few coats of the L'Oréal Paris Paradise Big Deal Mascara here, but just look at the lift! The bendy wand scoops the lashes up for instant lifting, and it holds in place all day long. It's a great all-rounder that lengthens, curls, lifts and volumises without clumping or looking spidery. Honestly, it rivals some of the more expensive mascaras I've tested, and I'm never without a tube now.

4. The Ordinary Lash Curl Finisher

Okay, The Ordinary Lash Curl Finisher isn't technically a mascara. But if you want the look of a lash lift, but without wearing anything heavy on your lashes, then you have to try this clear mascara. You simply curl your lashes with an eyelash curler, then sweep the clear formula from root to tip, and it locks in the curl all day to make you look like you have naturally curled and lifted lashes. There's a slight tackiness to it if you apply too much, but one coat is enough to hold the curl and give some subtle definition.

5. Lancôme Lash Idôle Curl Goddess Mascara

In case you hadn't already guessed, Lancômes mascaras are amongst some of my favourites, so the second one from the brand in this list, the Lash Idôle Curl Goddess Mascara, is also deserving of a spot in your makeup bag. In comparison to the original Lash Idôle, this one delivers a more dramatic, false lash effect. It lifts lashes up with lasting hold in addition to achieving a generous curl, length and volume for a doe-eyed flutter. I find one coat is more than enough for a dramatic look.

6. Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara Waterproof

Whenever I'm asked for a good waterproof mascara that also delivers on curl and lift, this is the one I recommend. The curved wand of this Dior mascara scoops the lashes up from the root with generous lift and curl, and is easily layered depending on whether you prefer a defined and lengthened look, or something more dramatic with multiple coats. Waterproof formulas such as this one are a great choice if you have stubbornly straight lashes, as the long-wearing formulas work even harder to lock in a curl, ensuring your lashes don't droop throughout the day.

7. Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara

I adore just about any Hourglass makeup product that launches, but Hourglass mascaras are next-level. This was one of the first mascaras I tried that truly kept my curled lashes lifted for the entire day. Yes, it has a luxurious price tag to match the formula, but if you want to invest in a luxury mascara, then you won't be disappointed. The flexible wand lengthens, lifts and defines each lash, and it stays put throughout the entire day. It's also a tubing formula, so it removes effortlessly at the end of the day with just warm water.

9. Rimmel Wonder'bond Lash Filler + Hyaluronic Mascara

Rimmel Wonder'bond Lash Filler + Hyaluronic Mascara is one of the best high street mascaras I've tried in the past year, and it has the added bonus of being an incredible nourishing formula for your eyelashes. The curved brush hugs the base of the lashes and grabs onto each and every one to define, lengthen and lift with zero clumps. The only downside? It can be prone to transferring onto the lids, so it's something to be mindful of, especially for hooded eyes.

11. Benefit Badgal Bang! Volumizing Mascara

If it's volume and lift that you're after, then you can't go wrong with any of the Benefit mascaras, but the Bad Gal Bang Mascara is in a league of its own. "If a volumising mascara is what you're after, this is the one to invest in," says deputy beauty editor, Grace Lindsay. "I would go as far as to say that this is the best mascara Benefit has ever created, but if you prefer a more natural look, then this probably isn't for you." It really does keep your lashes lifted and curled for the entire day and night, ensuring you look wide-eyed from application to removal at the end of the day.

The Formula and Brush

Coming in both black and brown mascara formulas, it boasts an array of lash-nourishing ingredients such as shea butter and beeswax that help to soften and condition the lashes as you wear it. And whilst it's not technically a tubing mascara, it does remove easily like one with some warm water and your usual cleanser.

The wand features a flexible comb brush, which has two different lengths of bristles. One side features short bristles, which help to lift lashes up from the root, and the other side has longer comb-like bristles, designed to lengthen and separate the lashes. This makes it super helpful for customising your lash look, whether you want a natural-looking flutter or want to layer up for a bolder effect.

The Application

After curling my lashes with an eyelash curler, I find that this mascara does a great job at keeping my lashes lifted and curled throughout the day. After just a few sweeps through my lashes, it does a great job at lengthening and separating for a fanned-out effect. I'd say that one coat gives a natural-looking result, but if you require more drama, you can get more volume if you layer it up. But what I love the most is that it feels lightweight and soft to the touch on the lashes; it never feels heavy.

Before and After

Here are my lashes with just one coat. I'm amazed at the lengthening and defining effects in just a couple of sweeps through my lashes and, to my surprise, it actually held my curl in place right until I came to take it off in the evening. It's quite a feat for my stubbornly straight lashes, as I find so many mascaras make my lashes flop halfway through the day.

My Verdict

Overall, I'm so impressed with this mascara. It lengthens, curls, separates and holds my lashes in place all day without smudging or flaking, and it never feels heavy on my easily irritated eyes. The comb wand makes it easy to achieve a natural look, but is easily layered up if you want more drama from your mascara. It's not the most volumising formula I've tried, but if you're after a great everyday mascara that's also a total dream to remove at the end of the day, this might be the mascara for you. I've been wearing the black formula; however, it also comes in a brown shade if you want a more subtle hue on fair lashes. In short, I'm very impressed.

1. Lancôme Lash Idôle Mascara

Editor review: It's hard to pick a favourite out of Lancôme's mascaras, but for me it has to be the Lash Idôle Mascara. Featuring a flexible curved wand, it effortlessly lengthens, curls, lifts and defines each and every lash with a silky, lightweight formula that's soft to the touch. One coat gives the effect of a lash lift, but two coats allow you to achieve a more dramatic effect without any hint of clumping. It's not the most volumising mascara around, but if you prefer a naturally defined look to your lashes, then you'll absolutely love it too.

2. Lancôme Hypnôse Drama Mascara

Editor review: If you're familiar with the original Hypnôse formula, then consider Hypnôse Drama Mascara as her more dramatic sister. Featuring a large S-shaped curved wand, the bristles have deep reservoirs that load up on the volume as you sweep it through your lashes. In just a couple of swipes, you have a wide-eyed, volumised look that might get your false-lash accusations. It plumps up every lash and delivers brilliant length and curl, too. Lovers of a natural-looking mascara, scroll on!

3. Lancôme Lash Idole Flutter Mascara

Editor review: I'd consider this mascara in my top three favourites. I personally favour a long and fluttery effect that remains natural-looking for my day-to-day mascara, and this magic wand ticks all the boxes. The wand is flexible but isn't super bendy, so it has just enough resistance to push and lift the lashes up whilst delivering incredible length, thanks to the 480 short micro bristles that extend each lash to its full potential. The result is a natural-looking flutter that's great as an everyday mascara look.

4. Lancôme Lash Idôle Curl Goddess Mascara

Editor review: New to Lancôme's mascara offering is the new Lash Idôle Curl Goddess Mascara, and if you seek curl and lasting hold, then this is the mascara for you. I have stubbornly straight lashes that often flop by the afternoon, but this formula keeps them standing to attention right until I come to take it off in the evening. It has a large curved wand that captures every lash to curl and lift them upwards, and it also does a great job at volumising and lengthening them too. I was surprised at just how lightweight this mascara felt on my eyes, too. My only criticism is that the wand is quite large, and so if you have smaller or hooded eyes, you need to be careful not to get the product on your lids.

5. Lancôme Hypnôse Custom Wear Volumising Mascara

Editor review: Hypnôse is arguably Lancôme's most iconic mascara formula, and it's still good now as when it launched in 2004. What makes it so good? It's extremely versatile. One coat gives you defined yet beautifully volumised lashes, but you can layer it up for more intensity without a hint of clumping. It's a great all-rounder, delivering length, definition, volume and curl all in one. You can even layer on another coat over dry mascara throughout the day, and it never turns spidery. Your lashes will always stay defined and fluttery.

How I Tested

I've been wearing Lancôme's mascara for years now, but for this specific review, I wore the brand's most-loved mascaras and newer formulations to put them to the test. I wore each mascara for a couple of days, evaluating how well each lengthened, volumised, curled and defined my lashes. I also took into account how well the mascara lasted throughout the day and whether the formula smudged or irritated my eyes.

Whilst I'm lucky to be blessed with long and dark eyelashes, they're also poker straight, which makes it a challenge to find a good mascara that's up to the challenge of not just curling my stubbornly straight lashes, but also holding them in place without drooping. Don't get me wrong, my eyelash curler does a good job at giving my lashes an initial lift, but many curling mascaras I've tried fail to keep them perky past 12 P.M.

I've always considered Lancôme to be the Rolls-Royce of mascaras, and the original Lash Idôle Mascara (£28) is a holy grail amongst many of our team's makeup bags. So when I heard that the French beauty brand was launching the new Lash Idôle Curl Goddess Mascara (£28), I just knew I had to try it. I've been testing it out over the past couple of weeks, and I've got some thoughts on it.

The Brush

The wand has one of the more unusual-shaped brushes I've seen. It has a curved shape with bristles angled at 40° that corkscrew around the brush, which gives it a helix-like appearance. Unlike the classic Idôle mascara, it has a solid brush as opposed to a flexible one, and it has deep reservoirs between the bristles to load on the product and help volumise your lashes as you sweep it through. The tube itself also has an hourglass shape, which is actually really nice to hold. And the brushed rose gold finish? Stunning.

The Formula

This mascara dries pretty quickly, helping to lock your curl into place (big plus). It's also a very volumising formula (Lancôme claims it delivers both a 150% curl boost and up to +800% volume), but miraculously, it doesn't feel heavy on the lashes at all. It feels lightweight, flexible to the touch and fluttery, and I'm happy to report it didn't flake or smudge either, even on my hooded eyes. I find that one coat is more than enough for eye-opening length and volume, but you can get away with a second coat without clumping. It also didn't irritate my watery eyes, making it a great mascara for sensitive eyes, too.

My Verdict

Even as a lover of Lancôme's mascaras, this one exceeded my expectations. My lashes were left with a beautiful curl that lasted all throughout the day without drooping, with plenty of volume and lengthening that really made my lashes pop—they almost touch my brows when I'm wearing it! Miraculously, even though it does all of this, it didn't transfer to my upper lids or flake, either. I'm impressed.

If I had to nit-pick, I'd say it's a bit too volumising for my taste (I'm not usually a volumising mascara gal). But with mascara being so personal to everyone, this might not be a problem for you. It felt light as air on my lashes, and you only need to gently swipe it through your lashes to get an eye-opening result. You can definitely layer up with another coat, but anything more than two may start entering clumping territory. But to be honest, one coat is more than enough for me. Finally, a mascara that actually holds a curl in place.

How I Tested

I tried the new Lancôme Lash Idôle Curl Goddess Mascara prior to its launch for a fortnight to see how the formula worked. As a beauty editor with straight lashes that don't hold a curl, I evaluated how well it curled and held my lashes in place, as well as noting how well it lengthened and volumised my eyelashes. When it comes to mascara, everyone has different preferences. Some favour a lengthening mascara, others want a volumising mascara formula, whilst others swear by tubing mascaras, or mascaras for sensitive eyes. As for myself, I religiously use curling mascaras, but I also swear by waterproof mascaras, which are not only brilliant for holding a curl, but come with so many benefits too.

"Waterproof formulas contain waxes and silicones to repel moisture, so they can feel thicker, whereas standard mascaras are more water-soluble and have a lighter texture," says Dior makeup artist Jamie Coombes. "It has more staying power, making it ideal for long events and all-day wear with less smudging and transfer. It's ideal for watery eyes, as it's less likely to smudge or run," he says.

Plus, waterproof mascaras can see you through all sorts of concerns and occasions, making them a bulletproof option to have in your makeup bag. Personally, I love them for my hooded eyes, as other mascaras tend to smudge and transfer onto my browbone.

"Waterproof mascaras are ideal for contact lens wearers or for those with more watery eyes. They're also great for active sports, such as the gym, as it repels sweat and moisture," says Coombes. "It’s Ideal for any situation where you need lash makeup to last for everyday wear, such as an all-day event like a wedding, where you may shed a tear or two, or when you're on holiday in hot, humid conditions," he says.

1. Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara Waterproof

Coombes' favourite is this mascara, which just so happens to be one of my all-time favourite waterproof mascaras too. "My favourite is Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof; it's not too heavy, doesn’t budge and the wand separates the lashes perfectly," he says. The curved brush hugs the base of the lashes to lift them into a beautiful curl that stays in place all day, and it does a great job at defining and lengthening for a wide-eyed effect. The waterproof formula is bulletproof, so you ideally need an eye makeup remover to melt it away. But I've worn it to the gym, shed happy tears and worn it in humid climates and it breezed through them all easily.

2. L'Oréal Paris Volume Million Lash Waterproof Mascara

"One of my all-time favourite mascaras is the L'Oréal Paris Volume Million Lashes Mascara; however, during the winter months, my eyes can get quite dry and, in turn, quite watery, so I prefer to opt for the waterproof formula," says junior beauty editor, Grace Lindsay. "This isn’t the kind of mascara that will give a super natural, fluttery effect, but it’s incredible at separating the lashes and providing a voluminous finish. When using the waterproof version, I tend to apply two coats, and love going about my day without worrying that my mascara will be everywhere by the end of it. Yes, it can be a little harder to remove, but I recommend an oil-based cleanser to help break it down," she says.

3. Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara

Whilst this mascara isn't technically a waterproof mascara, it is one of the most long-wearing formulas I've tried, with the added benefit of it being really easy to remove compared to traditional waterproof formulas. It removes with warm water, so you might not want to wear it on a swim or spa day, but I feel it deserves a place amongst the best waterproof mascaras if you dislike how hard most of them are to take off. It feels lightweight and silky on the lashes, and the dual-sided comb is perfect for lengthening, lifting and volumising the lashes. It doesn't smudge or crumble, and is easily layered for a bolder look. It's one of my favourite Ilia beauty products, hands down.

4. Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara

"I'm one of those silly people who constantly has mascara smudged around their eyes because I have convinced myself I don't like waterproof formulas. Why? Simply because I am too lazy to remove them properly. However, in more recent years, I have found that a great tubing formula is the perfect middle ground, and this is probably the best one I have ever used," says beauty director Shannon Lawlor. "Not totally waterproof, but not prone to smudging either, this Hourglass formula wraps lash strands in 'tubes' of product—they bind to the lash and do not budge. Well, not until you really work some water in at least, and then those tubes slip off each strand like little mascara worms. After a full day's wear, I can confirm it didn't smudge at all, but after 15 hours of wear, I did start to see some flaking. In my opinion, though, if you want seriously lengthened lashes sans smudging, Hourglass Unlocked is the way to go," she says.

5. Chanel Le Volume De Chanel Waterproof Mascara

"Whilst I’m usually open to trying new things, I’m pretty averse to trying a mascara that isn't the Chanel Le Volume," says acting deputy editor, Rebecca Rhys-Evans. "I have before, of course (in the name of beauty!), but none come close to competing for me. Chanel Le Volume does as the name suggests—it creates volume from the root and separates the lashes to the point where every single one could be counted. It doesn't clump, and the wand is neat, so I rarely manage to smudge it against my lids. I also find that it lasts longer than other mascaras. Some I try are brilliant for 3-4 weeks, but quickly dry out and flake around my eyes after a couple of hours. And, I've found the waterproof version provides the same, but I must admit I save it for particular occasions instead of everyday use (summer holidays, or a wedding where I just know I'll be crying!). Whilst I usually go for black, the brown shade is a particularly lovely chocolatey tone, and looks soft and natural with sun-kissed skin," she says.

6. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof Mascara

I actually discovered this Maybelline mascara version after picking up the waterproof formula by mistake in my local drugstore. But since trying it, I've been converted. If you love the incredible lengthening and lifting from the original formula, then you'll get even more hold from the waterproof version. It's so lengthening that my lashes almost touch my eyebrows when I wear it! But it has the bonus of being smudge- and flake-proof, so it will see you through even the rainiest downpours or humid weather.

7. Lash Lash Idôle Waterproof Mascara

"I consider this to be the holy grail of mascaras," says deputy editor Maxine Eggeneberger. "No flaking, no clumping, no smudging, just serious length, definition, volume and curl. I also like the wand and brush shape—its narrow design was ideated to reach even the smallest of lashes on either side of your eye, creating a wide fan-like flutter. Honestly, I don’t know why you’d ever need to buy another mascara," she says.

I've always found it tricky to find a good waterproof mascara that delivers a natural-looking effect. But Beauty Pie's The Perfect Waterproof Mascara is exactly what I've been looking for. It delivers just the right amount of volume, length and curl to make you look like you're naturally blessed with beautiful lashes with zero clumps. Oh, and it also comes in brown, too.

How to Remove Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascaras need a little more help when it comes to removing them, says Coombes. "Use an oil-based eye makeup remover, such as Dior Beauty Eye and Lip Remover (£32 ) he says. "Soak a cotton pad, lay it over the lashes with the eye closed, and rest it on the lashes for a few seconds to dissolve the mascara. Then gently sweep down the lashes to avoid pulling them, and repeat until removed. Then, using your regular cleanser, wipe away any remaining residue from the eye area." An oil cleanser is also helpful for breaking down stubborn waterproof mascara.

I've always had stubbornly straight eyelashes. They're long, but do they hold a curl? At least not without a heavy-duty mascara and my best eyelash curlers. Lately, I've been forgoing mascara in favour of "no-makeup" makeup, and to be honest, I've come to love the freedom of not wearing mascara (no smudging or irritated eyes here).

That being said, I still want my eyelashes to look defined, and while a lash lift always gives me a wide-eyed effect, I don't love the cost (and time commitment) of the regular upkeep. So, when I found out that The Ordinary was launching the Lash Curl Finisher (£9), my interest was immediately piqued.

How Does It Work?

You can think of the Lash Curl Finisher much like a clear mascara. The transparent formula contains form-filming technologies that lock in a curl while feeling lightweight, soft and flexible on the lashes. Whilst it doesn't add any pigment, length or volume to your lashes, it does add some subtle definition, making it perfect if you want a natural look. You simply curl your lashes (my favourite is the Kevyn Aucoin The Eyelash Curler, £22), then sweep the curved brush through your lashes to set the curl in place. It also contains squalane to help nourish and condition your lashes.

It might remind you of the TikTok-viral hack where people applied Vaseline to their lashes after curling for a long-lasting curl. Having tried it, I can tell you this does work. However, the process isn't as seamless as applying it with The Ordinary's wand, and Vaseline feels sticky on the lashes. The Lash Curler, however, sets into a soft finish on your lashes.

The Verdict

I really love this product, and it's a welcome addition to my makeup bag. On days when I want a more natural-looking lash look, this is perfect for enhancing my eyes without committing to the faff of mascara. It holds a curl in place really well and doesn't feel like I'm wearing anything on my lashes. It feels totally flexible and soft to the touch. The curved brush is great for capturing every single lash for maximum lift and curl, and it neatly fans out my lashes with subtle definition. It delivers just the right amount of product, too, and I love how lifted my lashes look.

I did notice my lashes dropped a little by the end of the day, but they still look visibly lifted and curled, more so than they would if I went without it. If I apply a lot of it or multiple layers, it does have a slightly tacky finish to the touch, but this didn't really bother me. Needless to say, this was a dream to remove at the end of the day—it melted away with my normal cleanser.

Of course, if you want length, volume or pigment, then a volumising or lengthening mascara is probably better suited for you. You can technically apply mascara on top of this, but it's best to use a thin layer and wait until it's fully dry before applying mascara. I tried it layered with the L'Oréal Paris Big Deal Mascara, and it enhanced the curl and lift so much that it looked like I was wearing lash extensions.

If you love the look of a lash lift, this is the perfect alternative without a costly visit to a lash tech. And at under £10, you can best believe I'll be topping up once I run out.

The biggest makeup trends of 2026 look set to have one thing in common—they’re natural yet incredibly polished. What is Clear Mascara?

When asking people what their desert island beauty product is, nine times out of 10, they say mascara. And the best clear mascaras have all of the same characteristics of our favourite coloured formulas—they lift, curl and thicken—but far more naturally and, crucially, without any of the pigment.

“Clear mascara is really about enhancing what’s already there rather than transforming the lashes completely. It gives definition, separation and a healthy sheen without the heaviness of black mascara,” explains Enright. “Especially on lifted lashes, a clear mascara lets the curl do the work, which is exactly what you want after a good lash lift. The clients that I work with in both London and Ireland love the overall effect of a more natural, polished, but effortless look which feels very current.”

How to Use Clear Mascara

In terms of application, it’s unsurprisingly very similar to your usual mascara, although Enright points to the importance of being “a bit more intentional” and slowing down. “Work from the root with a gentle wiggle of the wand, then comb through to separate. You can also coat the top of the lashes without the risk of getting black mascara all over the lid, which is great when you want something quick and low-maintenance,” Enright explains.

Unlike coloured mascaras, one coat will usually do the trick and, if you do decide you want more length or lift, Enright says that it’s easy to reapply as you don’t get the same flaking or clumping that you do with traditional mascaras. “A lot of clear mascaras now sit somewhere between makeup and lash care. Because they’re not focused on colour or heavy volume, many formulas include conditioning ingredients like pro-vitamin B5, glycerin or light oils to help keep lashes hydrated and healthy, so they tend to feel lighter,” she says.

I've been lucky enough to get my makeup done by professional makeup artists a few times in my life. Whenever they ask if I have an ideal lash look, I practically shout, "Kendall Jenner!" I've always loved how long, fluttery and natural-looking her lashes look, regardless of whether she's snapping a selfie at home or walking a red carpet in full glam.

In the past, I've toyed with the idea of getting lash extensions to mimic the look, but I prefer a low-maintenance routine with minimal beauty appointments. Plus, I like to champion the no-mascara trend from time to time. So I turn to mascara.

Recently, I tried a new mascara. It's one that Kendall Jenner reportedly uses and loves, and I can see why. Its thin, stiff brush and flexible formula give me long, Jenner-esque lashes. L'Oréal Paris Extensionist Mascara

For context, I've only ever found two mascaras that help me achieve Jenner-esque lashes. The first is Refy's Lash Sculpt Lengthen and Lift Mascara (£22). It's been my go-to off-duty mascara for years thanks to a curved brush that lifts and separates my lashes and a flexible formula that never looks clumpy or obvious. It's the perfect "no-makeup makeup" mascara.

The second is another drugstore product—Maybelline's Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara (£13). Multiple celebrity makeup artists have recommended it to me, including Kelli Anne Sewell and Alexandra French. It's lengthening, lifting and curling, and it doesn't flake or clump, ever.

When I saw that L'Oréal Paris was launching a new mascara to mimic the look of lash extensions, I was cautiously optimistic. (I've been let down by similar formulas in the past.) However, this one was really something special. Check out my before-and-after pictures for proof.

The Verdict

Needless to say, I was impressed by this L'Oréal mascara. The formula is thin, buildable, and flexible, so it doesn't clump, flake or get crusty throughout the day (IYKYK). The best part, though, is the brush. It's a short, dense, plastic brush (my favourite kind!). It distributes just the right amount of mascara on my lashes, sweeping up and out for exceptional lift and length.

The effect lasted all day, through a busy, 14+-hour workday. And when it came time to wash it off, I didn't need a thick, oily makeup remover. The washable formula came right off with my normal cleanser. Easy on, easy off.

I've worn it nearly every day since I first tested it. Now, I'm happy to announce that I've found my third go-to mascara for achieving Jenner-level lashes.

In an ideal world, I wouldn’t wear makeup at all. I love the idea of bare skin, freckles on show, and a face that looks exactly like it does first thing in the morning—just perhaps after a really good night’s sleep and a litre of water. How to Choose Natural-Looking Makeup Products:

Choosing natural-looking makeup starts with understanding your own skin and letting that guide every decision. Coverage should be flexible, not fixed—look for sheer-to-light formulas that can be built only where you need them, rather than products that mask the entire face. Anything described as “skin-like,” “second skin,” or “blurring” is usually a good place to start, especially if it comes in cream or tint form.

Shade selection matters more than you might think. With blusher, bronzer, and highlighter, opt for tones that already exist in your face—whether that be soft pinks, muted peaches, or gentle browns—and choose subtle sheen finishes rather than full-on sparkle.

Texture is just as important as colour. Natural makeup should melt, blend, and move with your skin. If a product dries too quickly, feels tight, or sits on top of pores, it will always look like makeup. Creams, liquids, and finely milled powders tend to be the most forgiving, especially when applied with fingers or a soft brush.

Finally, longevity should be realistic. The most natural-looking products often fade gracefully rather than staying perfectly intact. I’d rather reapply something that wears off slowly than rely on a formula that stays put but looks cakey as the day goes on.

As a beauty editor who tries new beauty products every single day, I've probably tried most makeup brands out there. Kosas has become a firm favourite in my makeup bag. In fact, the Kosas concealer has become my staple for concealer for disguising my dark circles.

So, when I heard Kosas was launching a mascara, I had a feeling it would be good. That being said, I'm very particular about my mascaras, so I had high expectations for it. Scroll on for my honest thoughts below.

The Brush and Formula

The Kosas Soulgazer mascara has a bendy, flexible wand with an hourglass shape. The middle of the brush has tiny bristles, while the outer edges have longer bristles to capture every lash, which it does brilliantly, by the way. After curling my lashes, I swiped it through my lashes and was not only met with incredible lengthening, but it also gave my lashes a fanned-out flutter, instantly making my eyes look bigger and wide awake.

What's great about this particular formula is that it also contains peptides to help encourage lash growth (think of it as a lengthening mascara and lash serum all in one). It takes around 6-8 weeks to see full results (as does anything to do with hair growth, whether that be the hair on your head or your eyelashes), so you'll need to be patient. That being said, after using the formula for a couple of weeks, my lashes are feeling softer and in better condition.

Here are my lashes sans mascara. My eyelashes are fairly long and thick already; however, they're stubbornly straight and struggle to hold a curl. So, I always favour curling mascaras and wands that lengthen, lift and fan out my lashes with lasting hold.

After

Here are my lashes after a generous coating of the Kosas Soulgazer Mascara. I like that it has given me noticeable length, as well as creating a fanned-out effect that makes my eyes look brighter. My only gripe is the shape of the brush. The hourglass-shaped brush deposits more product into the middle of my lashes and less on the outer corners. This does result in a doe-eyed effect; however, I personally prefer more length and definition on my outer corners.

As I wore it over the past fortnight, it was noticeably light on my lashes (I genuinely forgot I was wearing it some days!) and it leaves my lashes looking glossy. Plus, as someone with hooded eyes, I'm pleased to report that I experienced zero smudging or flaking—a double tick from me—so it's also a great mascara for sensitive eyes.

The Verdict

This mascara is for you if you like a fanned-out, fluffy lash. It excels at lengthening the lashes, and it really feels weightless to wear. Because of the bendy, hourglass shape of the brush, it's not the easiest to layer (if you're going for a second coat, that's best done while the mascara is still wet on your lashes, rather than after the first coat has dried), and if you're someone who wants a volumising mascara, you may want to skip this one.

However, if you want a doe-eyed flutter that holds a curl all day and doesn't smudge or flake, this is a great option, with the additional win of the lash-boosting benefits. While I've not yet noticed a dramatic difference after two weeks (you'll need to wait about 6-8 weeks to see the full results), my eyelashes do feel noticeably softer since I've used it. 1. Lively Lashes

As a beauty editor, I already know that this autumn will see a huge focus on statement lashes. Forget classic black mascaras, as this season is all about warm brown and burgundy tones. "As we move into A/W, I can see brown lashes having a moment, adds Hunt.

Not only do these mascaras add a pop of colour to your makeup look, but they can also help to enhance your eye colour and make your eyes pop. The best bit? So many brands have caught onto this trend and are releasing their iconic formulas in fun new shades. Shop some of my favourites below.

2. Bitten Berry Lips

The French girl "bitten lip" aesthetic is all the rage right now, and I do not doubt that this trend will continue into the autumn months. This softer, more smudged effect makes it appear as if you've just bitten into a juicy cherry or ripe strawberry, giving your makeup look that effortlessly chic finish.

However, as Hunt tells me, the new season will see a shift from lighter lipsticks to warm, rich shades. "Deep berries and wines will be everywhere. Paired with minimal blush or bronzer, the main focus will be on the lips and luminous skin," she says.

3. Bronzer Is the New Blush

Blush has been trending for quite some time, but according to Hunt, this autumn it's all about bronzer. "Bronzer will take over where blush usually sits, giving subtle warmth and structure to the skin without the need for extra colour on the cheeks."

Not only will this trend help to streamline your makeup routine, but it will also enable you to prolong that summer glow as we enter the colder months. Whether you prefer a cream formula or a classic bronzing powder, there are lots of ways to achieve this look.

4. Secret Shimmer

I know what you're thinking: isn't autumn a bit early for shimmery makeup looks? Well, this season, there's a more subtle way to incorporate the trend. Hunt tells me we can expect to see small touches of bronze, gold and silver in our autumn makeup looks, such as metallic accents on the cupid’s bow for that delicate yet striking finish.

"I absolutely love this trend and will definitely be trying it," she adds. "It's a fun way to elevate your makeup without going over the top."

Last, but by no means least, this autumn is all about earthy tones. "Warm shades like terracotta, burnt bronze and deep browns will be hugely popular across fashion and beauty this A/W," Hunt says.

Whether it's an earth-toned smoky eye look, a terracotta blush or a bronze lip gloss, there are so many ways to make this trend work for you. My wardrobe is already filled with these autumn hues, so I can't wait to match my makeup to my outfit.

When we're shopping for the best mascara, we all have different preferences. Some may prefer a lengthening mascara, while others may favour a tubing mascara to mitigate smudging.

As for myself, I have generally steered clear of most volumising mascaras because they inevitably make my lashes clumpy and spidery. However, there is one mascara I've long trusted to deliver false-lash drama (without the drama of clumping), and that is Lancôme's iconic Hypnôse Mascara (£30).

The Formula and Wand

Lancôme's mascaras were some of the first luxury mascaras I tried after graduating from high-street mascaras as a teenager. (I religiously wore Définicils (£29), which gave long, defined lashes, and Hypnôse in the evenings when I wanted a bolder look.) This iconic mascara launched in 2004, but it's still just as good now.

Firstly, the formula is inky black and really grabs onto every lash to saturate them in colour. What I like about this mascara is that one coat still gives you a natural-looking flutter. It doesn't deposit too much product onto your lashes on the first go, which is great if you have fine or thin lashes. But it can be layered up for more intensity without looking clumpy or spidery if you want more intensity.

The brush is a crowd-pleasing, classic brush shape with bristles of varying lengths around it that help to separate while coating each lash with volume, while the formula contains pro-vitamin B5 to help condition each lash as you wear it.

After

This is after one coat of the Hypnôse mascara. It's just the right amount for a subtle hint of volume for the daytime, without overwhelming my eyes. There's a reason it is considered one of the best daily mascaras for those who prefer an understated look.

After Two Coats

After two coats, you can start to get more of a false-lash look. The mascara is layerable when wet, but equally, it doesn't clump if you're topping up later in the day on dry lashes either.

The Verdict

It's easy to see why Lancôme's Hypnôse mascara is a beauty icon. One coat bestows a chic flutter upon your lashes, while two coats or more bring the drama without causing clumps. You'll be pleased to hear that this mascara doesn't smudge, transfer or flake, and it's a great mascara for sensitive eyes too.

I've tried plenty of volumising mascaras, but this is one of the few that thickens my eyelashes without making them look heavy and weighed down. Instead, it almost feels weightless on my lashes.

A lot of mascaras pass my desk in the Who What Wear UK office, but only a small handful genuinely make it into my everyday rotation after testing. While I have a penchant for luxury mascaras, it's well-known in the beauty industry that drugstore mascaras truly reign supreme (great news for bank accounts everywhere).

No word of a lie, I've often received the most compliments on my eyelashes when I've been wearing an affordable mascara (such as L'Oreal Paris Big Deal Mascara, or the Panorama Mascara) but, since trying Rimmel's Wonder'bond Lash Filler + Hyaluronic Mascara (£12), it might just be my new favourite. The Wand and Formula

The wand is of the flexible plastic variety (my personal preference compared to bristled wands) with a curved shape that sits snugly at the base of the lashes. It has lots of tiny triangle-shaped spikes that help to capture every lash as you sweep it through.

The formula contains teeny-tiny fibres that add visible volume and length to each lash. Additionally, it includes biotin and hyaluronic acid to help soften and nourish your eyelashes.

The Application

After curling my lashes, I swept the wand through and what really stood out was the perfect amount of tension this mascara creates. Some feel like they're not doing much, but I can actually feel this wand grabbing onto even the smallest of my eyelashes, helping to lengthen but also lift and curl.

In the above video, I'm applying one initial coat and I was amazed at the lengthening and curling it achieved in just a couple of sweeps. This mascara creates a really fanned-out look and the formula is a deepy, inky black (it does come in brown too, FYI). My lashes are prone to drooping, even when using curling mascaras, but this one kept my lashes beautifully lifted all day long. It doesn't feel heavy on the lashes and it's easy enough to remove at the end of the day too.

One coat creates a wide-eyed flutter, but you can easily layer up if you want more volume and drama. I'm pleased to report I didn't get any clumping, even after layering up with a couple of coats. Scroll ahead to see my before and after pictures.

The Verdict

Aside from a tiny bit of smudging transfer on my upper lids, I really can't fault this mascara—especially at £12. I've only tested this for a couple of weeks, so I don't think I've seen the full benefit of the nourishing ingredients on my lashes yet (although my lashes do feel softer) but it's a nice addition to have in an already brilliant mascara.

The curved brush and bristles really grab on to every single lash, stretching them, fanning and volumising them to their full potential so you get a doe-eyed flutter. One coat is great for everyday length, curl and definition, but you can layer up with another one or two coats for more volume and a false-lash effect if you want something a bit more dramatic for the evening.

As a beauty editor who tests makeup products for a living, it's safe to say that I've tried some of the best mascaras on the market. From high-street mascaras to luxury formulas, tubing mascaras, mascaras for sensitive eyes and even brown mascaras, I've put my fair share of formulas to the test, and there are only a handful that I would purchase again and again.

Everyone knows my love for L'Oréal mascaras by now, but another favourite that I definitely don't shout about enough is the Mac MacStack Mascara. Released back in 2022, this mascara quickly went viral on TikTok, and for good reason. As the name suggests, this innovative formula has been designed to be continuously buildable, so that you can amp up the drama as much as your heart desires. I didn't believe the claims at first, but having been wearing it solidly for three years (and receiving countless compliments on my lashes every single day as a result), I can confirm this mascara is very much worth the hype. Below, I've included some pretty impressive before-and-after pictures, and included all the info that this beauty editor (me) wants you to know about one of her favourite formulas of all time.

The Brush and Formula

It's worth noting that there are a few different variations of this viral mascara. You can purchase the micro brush, the mega brush, a waterproof version and also a brown version. As someone with incredibly oily eyelids, I always opt for the waterproof mascara version with the mega brush, which has been designed with upper lashes in mind (I tend to only apply mascara to my upper lashes).

As mentioned above, the innovative formula is stackable, hence the name. The brand describes it as "endlessly buildable" thanks to the clump-resistant formula. It has been designed to deliver both volume and length, so it's ideal if you like to make a little more impact with your eye makeup.

The Application

I don't have the biggest of eyes, so when I first tried this product back in 2022, I was a little worried that the micro brush would be too big for me, but surprisingly enough, application is quick and easy. In fact, whenever I wear this mascara, I don't need to clean up any accidental smudges (which is normally the case for me).

The formula itself coats each lash nicely. Sometimes I find it a little tricky to get into those hard-to-reach corners at the inner and outer edges of my eye, but it's nothing major. The before and after results are always so impressive that I don't mind overlooking this small detail.

The Verdict

As you can see, this mascara is seriously stackable. I applied three coats in the pictures above, and it gave me a false-lash effect that I can usually only dream of. If I had to pinpoint one slight negative (and it's really nothing that notable), the claims that any mascara, not just this one, can be totally clump-resistant are always going to let you down. I find that three coats in the sweet spot before I start getting slight clumping. (Although it's still very minimal compared to other formulas.)

Beyond the frankly jaw-dropping, lengthening and volumising results, the one thing I really love about this mascara is how long-lasting it is. Normally, when I opt for a more high-impact formula, I am left with black smudges under my eyes in a matter of hours. However, this formula stays in place all day long and keeps my lashes looking long and lifted. If you're going to invest in one new makeup product this month, I highly suggest giving the Mac MacStack Mascara a go.

One of the most common questions I get asked as a beauty editor is: "How do I stop my mascara smudging?" And the truth is, I've always been in the same camp as you. As someone with hooded eyes, my mascara often ends up transferring onto my upper lids. Similarly, some mascaras tend to crumble and flake underneath the lower lids, too.

It doesn't matter whether you're using a luxury mascara or an affordable mascara; it seems some of us are cursed with our eye makeup smudging. And even with the most careful application, it can still end up in places it wasn't intended. It's one of my biggest beauty bugbears.

To put a stop to mascara smudging once and for all, I enlisted the help of celebrity makeup artist, Lan Nguyen-Grealis, to share her expert tips.

Prep Your Skin

There are a few things that can cause your mascara to smudge. But what you might not have considered is how much your skincare can play a part, particularly if you have oily skin or are prone to oily eyelids. "One of the most common reasons for smudging can be oily eyelids where the mascara transfers," says Nguyen-Grealis.

If you're used to wearing a heavier eye cream or moisturiser around your eyes, consider switching to a lightweight formula instead. Oily or greasy skincare around the eyes can tamper with your eye makeup, so look for lightweight eye serums, gel eye creams and oil-free moisturisers to help prevent things from slipping and sliding. And if you're prone to oily eyelids, opt for an eyeshadow primer on the lids to help create a preventative barrier between your mascara and your skin's natural oils.

Perfect Your Mascara Application

There are also a few key application tips that can help prevent and fix smudges when you're applying your mascara. Firstly, Nguyen-Grealis recommends curling your lashes with an eyelash curler first can help to lift your lashes up, which makes it much easier to get your wand into your lashes and avoid smudging. "Using a mascara primer will also help the mascara to grip better," she says.

If you have deep-set eyes or hooded eyes, then consider trying a lash guard, which can help to shield your upper and lower lids when you're combing a mascara wand through your eyelashes.

It's also important to not overload your lashes with mascara. "A bad quality mascara can causs mascara to smudge, flake and fall off, especially if you're overloading the lashes with too many coats," says Nguyen-Grealis.

However, even the most careful mascara application can end up in smudges (if you've ever sneezed after applying your mascara, you'll know what I mean) so keep some tiny Q-tips on standby to tidy up any transfer. "Make sure to dab rather than drag the smudges, especially if it’s still wet," she says.

If switching up your skincare and application technique doesn't help, then Nguyen-Grealis says upgrading your mascara to a tubing formula can make a big difference. They work by creating tiny polymer 'tubes' that wrap around each lash and are more long-lasting than the waxy mascaras that can flake or transfer onto lids. Another benefit of tubing mascaras is that they're far easier to remove than standard mascaras. Often, you can just use warm water, and the tiny tubes will slide right off your eyelashes with ease. They are a great mascara for older lashes or sensitive eyes, too, as they are gentler to remove. "Opt for a tubing or waterproof mascara, in particular one with a smaller wand to ensure minimum overload of lashes and smudging," she says.

Try Waterproof Mascaras

If tubing mascaras still aren't cutting it, then it's time to pull out the big guns and try a waterproof mascara. These formulas will take a little more work to remove (you'll need a good eye makeup remover) but will ensure your mascara stays put all day long, without transferring onto your upper lids or appearing underneath your eyes by lunchtime. "Sometimes in the hot weather and humidity, mascara can melt and smudge, especially if placed on lower lashes," says Nguyen-Grealis. "Opt for waterproof mascaras, as they are long-lasting as they have more staying power than the average mascara."

Set Your Makeup

As a final measure, there are a few makeup setting tips and tricks to help keep your mascara in place. If you haven't already, invest in a good makeup setting spray. This will help to not only lock in your makeup but also create a barrier between your mascara and lids to prevent smudging. Additionally, a loose or pressed setting powder acts as another layer of protection both on lids and underneath the eyes to help soak up excess oils and prevent mascara from transferring to your eyelids. "To prevent mascara transferring underneath, use a light dusting of translucent powder after concealer to ensure no oils or moisture cause smudging," says Nguyen-Grealis. "Usually, applying powder to set the eyelids can help with oily lids. If you're wearing eyeshadow, try a long-wear eyeshadow primer first, but still powder on top, especially if you're using a cream eyeshadow base, to avoid transfer. Then, set with a setting spray," she says.

I may be a beauty editor with access to some of the most expensive and luxurious beauty products, but I’ll die on this hill: some of the best mascaras ever are high-street mascaras. While I believe there are many areas of your beauty routine that can benefit from spending a little extra, mascara is one product which, I believe, needn’t empty your bank balance in order to deliver seriously great lift, length and volume to your lashes. Yet, even when it comes to affordable mascaras, not all are created equal. What started with a love affair with the original Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara back in the '00s has grown over the years into a long-running loyalty to the brand. So, when I discovered Max Factor was launching an extension to the range—Max Factor False Lash Effect Supreme Recharge Mascara—I knew I had to put it to the test. The Brush & Formula

First, let’s talk about the brush. Unlike the original False Lash Effect Mascara, which featured a large curved wand, the Supreme Recharge Mascara has a more unique shape. Rather than ballooning out in the middle, it curves inwards, almost as if someone has pinched it at its centre. Max Factor says this distinctive shape allows the wand to catch and coat your lashes smoothly for a volumised look.

For the formula, alongside featuring a true black pigment, Max Factor states the Supreme Recharge Mascara provides lashes with seven times more volume for a high-impact look. It’s also infused with keratin, a protein usually found in hair products, which works to care for and repair your natural lashes while wearing it, meaning when you remove your mascara, your bare lashes feel stronger and look healthier too. I’ve been testing the mascara for a few weeks now but I’ve layered up three coats below so you can see how it performs…

The Verdict

This may be my favourite Max Factor mascara to date. While I expected it to deliver on volume, I didn’t expect the results to be quite as effective. I found you really only needed one to two coats to achieve a full, lifted lash look. I did notice a small amount of clumping, most notably after the third coat, and for this reason I’d say you don’t want to overload this mascara—although when you see the finish after just two coats, you won’t feel the need to keep going.

The pigment is ultra-black and almost glossy, which gives my lashes a healthy finish that I love. This does mean it takes a few minutes to dry, however, so it may not be the best formula for those who like to apply their make-up on the go or when they're short on time. Drying time aside, however, my lashes look lengthened, lifted and with a slight curl, rivalling my favourite Eyelure underlashes for a natural, false-lash inspired look.

In terms of the effect of the keratin-infused formula, on removal my lashes didn’t feel dry or irritated, and I haven’t noticed any lashes falling out after using eye makeup remover. While I can’t vouch for them looking healthier per say, my lashes don’t look damaged or sparser than before I started using this mascara, so I’ll count that as a win.

Lastly, while I haven't finished my tube yet, I wanted to see how easy the refill function would be. To replace the cartridge, you simple open the mascara and press on the base to pop the tube out of place. Then, slide a new one in and you're good to go. With refill tubes priced at £9.99, it makes a great cost-effective option to stock up on my now-favourite formula.

Before we get into this, let me first let you know that my eyelashes aren't anything to write home about. They're thick and dark, sure, but they're also poker-straight and relatively short, meaning they don't hold a curl in the slightest. It's so good, in fact, that despite the fact my lashes have never been considered a particular attribute, this mascara has earned me a grand total of 12 compliments this past week alone (yes, I have been counting). No7 Pro Artist That's A Wrap Tubing Mascara promises longer, more defined lashes with impressive lift—and I can confirm it lives up to all of those claims. How does it do it? If you're not familiar with tubing mascaras, let me enlighten you. Essentially, they create a long-lasting film that envelopes each lash with "tubes". This makes tubing mascaras virtually smudge- and flake-proof. They also remove easily with just warm water—they sort of slide off the lashes like little worms which is both grossly satisfying and remarkably easy. Tubing mascaras are known to be some of the most long-lasting and high-impact formulas around—and this one is testament to that.

As for the brush itself, I'll admit that when I first saw it I didn't think much of it. The brush looks much like many others of its kind. It is plastic and has relatively sharp bristles (so it's not one you want to accidentally stab yourself in the eye with). If you've used the cult Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara before (a great luxury option, FYI), it sort of reminds me of that. The main difference between this and others however, is that the brush is pretty rigid—it doesn't have any of that flimsy flexibility that other tubing mascaras, that have previously left me feeling let down, possess. My first impression was that it looked good, but I wasn't expecting anything game-changing. (Spoiler alert: I've been humbled.)

The Verdict

When a makeup artist I work closely with told me she always keeps a tube of this stuff in her kit, I was a little taken aback. A No7 mascara?! Groundbreaking?! She told me to try it and see for myself—and I am seriously pleased I did. While the full price of £18 does seem a little steep for a No7 mascara, I'd still repurchase it. At the discounted price of £15 though, I'd buy two.

One coat delivered a notable length extension, but as I layered it up (while still wet, by the way, I wouldn't recommend dry reapplication with any tubing mascara) I could see my lashes becoming significantly bolder and more defined. I used my lash curlers first, and although my lashes are never going to hold that same curl in its entirety, the mascara helped keep them somewhat more lifted throughout the day, which is more than I can say for my other go-to formulas.

On the first day of wear, a few people commented that my makeup looked good—which took me by surprise because I wasn't actually wearing anything other than a bit of blusher and this mascara. On the second day, a friend asked if I'd had a lash lift. On the third day, four different colleagues told me that I looked glowing (again, no makeup, bar this mascara, had been applied).

It was at this stage I figured I was onto something good. After a full week of wear, however, I have been blown away by the compliments. I've had more people ask if I had had a lash lift, a few people ask what false lashes I was wearing and even my husband commented on how long my lashes look. I've found myself double-taking in the mirror at how pulled-together I look as a result of this mascara.

I know I'm a beauty editor, but when it comes to the best mascara, I tend to stick to the formulas that I know and love. Don't get me wrong, I love researching and testing out new launches, but incorporating them into my daily routine is another story. You see, I love a natural makeup look. I've used the same mascaras for years as I know that I can rely on them to give me that "no-makeup" makeup finish. So, when I heard that burgundy mascara was trending, I immediately assumed it wasn't for me.

I've been loyal to black and brown mascara for as long as I can remember, so the idea of adding in a pop of colour terrified me. However, as it turns out, there was nothing to be afraid of. Yep, after being persuaded to give burgundy mascara a go, I realised that this is actually a super subtle way to make your eyes pop. "Burgundy mascara is a fun way of adding colour to your makeup without being too much of a statement or being too bright," says Yolanda Dohr, makeup artist at inclusive London makeup experience, Beam. "This mascara is a subtle way to make your makeup look more exciting by adding a unique (and on-trend) touch."

Is Burgundy Mascara More Natural Than Black Mascara?

One thing I love about the burgundy mascara trend is that it makes my makeup look a lot more natural. Similar to brown, burgundy mascara can look a lot softer than black, so it's perfect for more understated makeup looks.

"Burgundy mascara is having such a moment because it really does look great on everyone," says Givenchy Beauty national MUA, Claire Mulleady. "It's a softer version of black that allows us to play a little with colour in the most wearable way."

"I would say it definitely looks more subtle than black mascara," adds Dohr. That being said, Dohr says that the results do depend on your natural lash colour. If you have lighter eyelashes, then burgundy mascara could be perfect for making a softer statement with your makeup.

Does Burgundy Mascara Suit All Eye Colours?

One thing I was keen to know was whether burgundy mascara could work with all eye colours. If you didn't know, blue mascara can really make brown eyes pop, so I was intrigued to know what effect burgundy formulas could have.

"Everyone can wear a burgundy mascara, but it will look especially great on those with green, hazel or blue eyes," says Dohr. "The contrast will ensure the eye colour stands out or pops a lot more that it would with other mascara shades."

If you really want your eyes to pop, Mulleady recommends adding a matching eyeshadow. "Givenchy's Le 9.09 eyeshadow palette is great for adding a burgundy liner or a softer, smoky eyeshadow look."

I was also intrigued as to whether this makeup product would work with all skin tones. "⁠⁠Yes, burgundy mascara suits all skin tones," Dohr tells me. "It is especially nice to use on those with very fair skin tones as it is more subtle-looking compared to black mascara, which can sometimes be a little too much for those with very fair skin and light hair."

The Big Deal mascara features a flexible wand with tapering combs that are longer at the end and shorter towards the tip.

L'Oréal Paris claim that this mascara is endlessly buildable without clumping lashes to achieve amazing length and volume. You can apply a few strokes for a fluttery, wide-eyed look or layer up the coats for a false-lash effect without your lashes taking on a spidery look. I layered up three coats below to see how it performs.

The Verdict

This has easily become my favourite mascara I've tried for a long time, and the £13 price tag makes it even more of a bonus.

I like that one coat gives my fluttery long lashes, and it really holds a curl throughout the day (as someone with stubbornly straight lashes, this is a dealbreaker for me). It also feels weightless on the lashes. I would say this is more lengthening and separating than volumising, however.

Two coats gives a little more drama without clumping and three coats is enough for a full false lash look and volume. I will say that you want to layer up the coats while your lashes are still wet from the previous layer, as letting them dry in between can cause some clumping. But when I layered them after each other, I didn't experience any clumping whatsoever.

I did notice a tiny bit of transfer on my eyelids (if you have hooded eyes like me, you'll likely experience this too) but it was only minor.It was also easy enough to remove with my usual cleansing oil, so I'll be keeping this mascara will most definitely be joining the ranks of the luxury mascaras in my makeup bag.

Can You Still Wear Mascara With Sensitive Eyes?

The first thing that I was curious about was whether I should be wearing mascara knowing that I have sensitive eyes. "You really want to get to the bottom of your runny eyes or itchiness," says Nicola Alexandra Cross, optometrist and co-founder of Peep Club. "Is it an allergy, dry eyes, or something more serious? Once you've had a check-up with your regular optometrist and ruled out anything very serious and you're taking steps to address the root cause of the problem, then you can certainly still wear eye make-up."

Consultant dermatologist Dr Volha Shpadaruk recommends carrying out a patch test if you're unsure about using a new mascara. "Apply a small amount to the skin behind your ear or on your inner wrist and wait 24 hours to check for any irritation." Of course, it's also important that you're replacing your mascara once it has expired in order to minimise the risk of infection.

What to Look for in a Mascara for Sensitive Eyes?

So, what should we be looking for in a mascara for sensitive eyes? As it turns out, it's actually about what we should be avoiding. "Mascara is often water-based, which means it requires preservatives. Sometimes, fragrances are added, and certain dyes can also cause irritation or sensitivity. These reactions can manifest as redness, itching, and dryness, and in some cases, swelling or blisters may occur," explains Dr Shpadaruk.

If you experience these kind of reactions, you want to choose a formula that is free from these harsh ingredients. "When looking for a mascara for sensitive eyes, it is very important to look for products that have no harsh chemicals, as those are likely to cause irritation," says Ana Klein, co-founder of immersive makeup experience, Beam.

Dr Shpadaruk also recommends looking for hypoallergenic formulas, as they have been designed to minimise the risk of irritation. You can also look for mascaras with natural waxes or oils to help nourish the lashes and provide gentle application.

How I Tested

As a beauty editor with sensitive eyes, I've tested multiple mascaras to see what formulas work best. I tested each mascara in this list for several weeks to ensure they didn't upset my eyes whilst evaluating their effectiveness at lengthening, volumising and curling my lashes.

If I'm honest, mascara is one of those beauty products that I don't like to spend a fortune on. As a beauty editor, I've tried so many formulas over the years, and I truly believe that the more affordable mascaras are some of the best on the market. There's one brand in particular that everyone raves about, and most of their mascaras are under £15. Yep, I'm talking about none other than L'Oréal.

Possibly one of the best affordable beauty brands of all time, L'Oréal offers an incredible range of mascaras that cater to a wide range of needs and wants. They have mascaras for volume, length, lift and definition, plus formulas specifically made for sensitive eyes and brown mascaras if you want to switch things up. Although I've tried a few of these formulas before, I was keen to give more a go, so I decided to put all of the brand's bestselling mascaras to the test to see which ones I rated the most.

1. L'Oréal Paris Volume Million Lashes Panorama Mascara

The whole Who What Wear UK team loves the L'Oreal Paris Panorama Mascara, myself included. It's a great mascara if you're after natural-looking (but still statement) volume. It has a slightly smaller wand than the mascara below, which makes it easy to coat hard-to-reach lashes, and I also like that it is available in a brown shade for when I want my eye makeup to look a little softer.

2. L'Oréal Paris Paradise Castor Oil Enriched Mascara

I don't know why, but I didn't expect to love this mascara as much as I did. I think the fact that it contains castor oil made me think that it would be greasy or move around on my eyes, but I couldn't have been more wrong. In fact, it actually stayed in place for the entire day, which is quite rare for me. It has quickly become my favourite mascara as it lengthens and defines my lashes for a super fluttery finish. Plus, this held a curl really well. I have quite sensitive eyes, and this has been specifically designed to be gentle on the eyes, thanks to soothing cornflower water and nourishing castor and rose oil. Honestly, I couldn't recommend this formula enough.

3. L'Oréal Paris Telescopic Lift Mascara

This is another mascara that really blew me away. It has a totally different wand from the other two, which features two-sided brush technology to help lengthen and lift. While it doesn't add as much volume as other options in this roundup, it was the lift that really impressed me. I felt like this mascara really opened up my eyes, and since testing, I've found myself reaching for it daily.

4. L'Oréal Paris Volume Million Lashes Mascara

I already knew I would like this mascara, as both my mum and I have had it in our own makeup bags for years. It's one of those mascaras that you just know is going to deliver. It has a larger wand (the brand calls it a Millionizer brush) that features both long and short bristles to ensure it's reaching every single eyelash. The result? Serious volume without any clumps.

5. L'Oréal Paris Telescopic Mascara

Last but by no means least, let me introduce you to the Telescopic Mascara. This was my first time testing this mascara, and I was a little sceptical at first as the wand is much smaller than the others. However, I'm starting to learn that sometimes this is best, as although it can take a little longer to apply, every single lash is left looking flawless. This mascara is great for that fanned-out finish that so many of us love, and I actually think that it adds impressive volume too.

How Do Lashes Change As We Age?

Before starting your hunt for a mascara that will look and feel amazing on aging lashes, it's helpful to know how to care for and protect them. As your lashes age, oestrogen levels dip, which reduces the hair-growth rate. This leads to everything from thinning and brittleness to loss of pigment and irregular density.

What Mascaras Are Best For Mature Lashes?

When it comes to deciding which mascara will work the best for your mature lashes, pay special attention to the ingredients. "I like hydrating ingredients like argan oil—a fatty acid–rich plant oil [that's] rich in linoleic acid, which is extremely hydrating," says Diane Hilal-Campo, MD, board-certified ophthalmologist and founder of Twenty/Twenty Beauty. She also shares that vitamin E offers nourishing benefits for the lashes and defends against damaging free radicals, and the addition of panthenol (vitamin B5) in a formula can work overtime to condition the lashes from the inside out.

"I'd also recommend looking for hyaluronic acid or glycerin, both of which are humectants that can draw water into dehydrated lashes. That water will then be locked into the lash by the aforementioned nourishing ingredients," Hilal-Campo adds. When it comes to which ingredients would cause more harm, she tells us to steer clear of allergens like beeswax. Additionally, she warns against mascaras with strong preservatives and alcohols that can cause damage to the lashes and eyes. It's smart to avoid prostaglandin analogues since they're known to trigger unnaturally long lash growth.

Additionally, it's worth considering waterproof mascaras and tubing mascaras, which are less likely to smudge or flake onto your lids. And if you find black mascara too harsh, a brown mascara can be softer and more natural-looking. Who What Wear UK Next in Beauty Awards 2024: Best Makeup Products 

A good primer is a true workhorse in our makeup routines, not only to ensure your base applies flawlessly but that it goes the distance throughout the day too. Dior's Forever Star Filter impressed our judges with its glowy makeup-skincare hybrid formula, which can be used in multiple ways—it's truly a multifunctional addition to your makeup bag that goes beyond just a good primer.

It can be worn alone on bare skin to give sheer coverage and a healthy glow (perfect for off-duty days), underneath makeup to add radiance and a filter-like blur to your complexion, or even dotted on top of makeup to illuminate the cheekbones. Dior has managed to bottle a lit-from-within, blurring glow that we now can't live without.

"I loved this product! I wore it under foundation and it made me look as if I was wearing a filter in real life," says junior beauty editor Grace Lindsay. "It added a natural glow to the skin and helped to blur any imperfections. I also like that you can use it in multiple ways, like as a highlighter," she says.

Take a peek inside any beauty editor's makeup bag, and you'll likely find Merit's The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick. Uniquely, this base product is neither marketed strictly as a concealer nor a foundation. It elegantly toes the line between the two, offering the targeted precision of a concealing stick which is also designed to be quickly scribbled all over the face for light to medium coverage. Think of it as a concealing ball-point pen to instantly fix your complexion on the go. The creamy formula melts into the skin to deliver a skin-like matte finish that effortlessly conceals redness, dark circles and blemishes with ease, all whilst feeling weightless.

"I like the idea and functionality of this product. It’s lightweight, brightening and easy to apply, making it perfect for on-the-go use," says makeup artist Zakiyah Shani. "The formula blends effortlessly into the skin and feels great for everyday wear. Overall, it is a great multi-purpose product and I would recommend it for its ease of use," she says.

It's also become a mainstay in copy editor Georgia Seago's makeup bag. "This is my new favourite foundation, except it doesn’t feel like a foundation, which I love," she says. "I wouldn’t normally choose a stick foundation because I’d assume it would be thick, heavy and cakey, but this is none of that. It’s light, creamy, super-easy to blend with a buffing brush and wears really nicely throughout the day," she says.

"Extra marks for the near-perfect shade match thanks to the very clever shade finder on the Merit site. It lets you select your shade in another brand’s foundation that you've previously used and gives you the closet Minimalist Complexion Stick match."

Finding your soulmate concealer can prove tricky, but MAC's Studio Radiance 24HR Luminous Lift Concealer scored top marks amongst our esteemed judges, who applauded the expansive range of 44 shades, meaning so many people can enjoy this game-changing product. Living up to its name, it features a radiant finish to illuminate your complexion with a creamy texture which melts into the skin—zero cakeyness here.

The formula is versatile enough to conceal dark circles as well as highlight for a sculpting effect that actually lasts throughout the day with minimal creasing. What's more, the formula boasts a number of skincare ingredients such as hydrating hyaluronic acid, oil-controlling niacinamide and brightening vitamin C.

"I love the choice of shades, allowing everyone to try the range," says makeup artist and brand founder Ruby Hammer MBE. "The formulation goes on very easily and blends, leaving blemishes concealed beautifully."

It also received high praise from our deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger. "The formula itself is lightweight and does have a radiant-like quality, so it lives up to the promises on the bottle," she says. "It doesn’t crease throughout the day, unlike so many other creamy concealers. I tried it under one of my eyes the day after I had very interrupted sleep to see the difference it made, and my husband said, 'Why does one eye look awake and the other looks like it needs to go back to bed?'. It’s hydrating too—again, unlike some other concealers."

Lottie London's Hot Glaze Bronzing Serum Drops caused quite the stir in the Who What Wear UK office—these instant bronzing drops rival ones that are four times the price and left our testers with a natural glow that doesn't break the bank. These serum drops can be worn on bare skin, mixed into moisturiser or foundation or applied over makeup as a bronzer to warm up the skin. You can even mix them with your body moisturiser for an instant glow on limbs or your décolletage. They're virtually foolproof thanks to the sheer formula, which adds a subtle glow that can be built up for a deeper payoff.

"I love this product, and it’s affordable, which makes it even better," says senior fashion and beauty editor for branded content, Rebecca Rhys-Evans. "I’m a serial fake tanner, and when I’ve used expensive gradual tanning drops before, I’ve often woken up to orange patches which you aren't easily removed. This product eliminates that issue. I love the idea of bronzing drops that are immediate, as you can remove any mistakes and don’t have to remember to use it in advance," she says.

"It also has a nice glowy undertone, isn’t orange and blends really well over the jaw and nose, where this kind of product can often stick. You can also use it with a brush, your fingers or a sponge—it’s so easy to use."

Rhode's Pocket Blush was one of the most anticipated launches of the year, and it scored top marks amongst our expert makeup judges and blush-obsessed editors. From the pocket-sized packaging that's easy to throw in your bag to the satin formulas that glide onto the skin and melt in effortlessly, there was nothing our judges didn't love about these effortlessly easy-to-use formulas. They're also versatile enough to be patted onto cheeks without the need for a brush as well as tapped into the lips for a monochromatic makeup look.

"I love the satin texture of these blushes, and the colours are great too," says makeup artist Anna Payne. "The stick formula is perfect for throwing in your bag for on-the-go touch-ups."

For the cream blush fans on the Who What Wear UK team, Rhode's Pocket Blush scored top marks across the board. "I really loved testing these blushers," says beauty editor Eleanor Vousden. "The formula is creamy and results in a satin finish on the skin which isn’t overly dewy nor matte—it's perfect. The blush lasted really well throughout the day, and I love the stick formula which is easy to pat into cheeks and lips on the go," she says. "The packaging is also very cute and travel-friendly. You only need a tiny amount, so this will last for ages and makes the price very reasonable, in my opinion."

We had to add a highly commended award for Ateh Jewel's Blush Of Dreams, which has been designed to work across all skin tones. The brand champions inclusivity, and our judges loved these creamy blushes which come in beautiful shades and not only pack a pigment punch but stay put throughout the day, looking just as vibrant hours later.

"I love this blusher," says makeup artist Emily Wood. "It creates the sweetest flush and is really blendable and hydrating. A little goes a long way, and although it's cream-based, the flush stays on," she says.

"At last! A blush designed with darker skin tones in mind," says fashion editor Remy Farrell. "Not only is this creamy, blendable and long-lasting, the highly pigmented shade sits perfectly on top of foundation or clean skin for a warm and vibrant pop of colour," she says. "Unlike some formulas that can be a little greasy and reduce to a shine, this holds a matte finish that stands up to daily wear without clogging pores and feeling too heavy."

We're makeup minimalists here at Who What Wear UK, and we love a hardworking hybrid product that serves multiple purposes. This is why Merit's Flush Balm is our very deserving winner in this category. Collectively loved by our expert judges and internal editorial team, we could talk at length about how much we love this product—seriously.

The domed-shaped applicator makes it easy to apply to cheeks for a healthy pop of colour with a dewy finish, but it also serves just as well as a lip tint, delivering a hydrated wash of colour. Some of our editors also use it as an eye shadow to create a monochrome look. Thanks to its compact size, you'll never find us without at least one in our bags—the extensive shade range makes it hard to pick a favourite.

"I love these blushers. The colours are perfect for that flushed look, the application is so easy and the product is buildable," says makeup artist Zoe Taylor.

"Merit’s Flush Balms are brilliant for several reasons," says Vousden. "Firstly, the innovative domed shape makes it so easy to apply onto cheeks without brushes—it can simply be patted in with the fingertips. I like that the pigment isn’t too heavy, so it delivers a subtle veil of dewy colour that is easily blendable to look like a natural blush. That being said, it can be layered for more intensity," she says.

For our conscious makeup choice, Saie delivered with its cruelty-free, gluten-free, non-comedogenic and vegan formula. Plus, our judges acknowledged its efforts towards The Saie Climate Initiative. This campaign pledges to remove and repurpose five million pounds of global plastic waste in collaboration with rePurpose. Its second pledge is eliminating and off-setting carbon emissions from its supply chain by 2039, and lastly, the brand has formed an all-female board with experts from across the beauty industry to support initiatives such as rePurpose, which helps social mobility for women by creating more income, social security and health insurance. As for Saie's products, our judges couldn't get enough of the Glowy Super Gel.

"This is stunning on its own for a lit-from-within glow or on top of makeup as a highlighter for a refreshed look," says skincare expert Janet Adetunji. "The shade Roseglow is so beautiful and iridescent," she says.

"Roseglow has a subtle pinky tint. I used it both over my SPF and on top of my makeup where I would usually apply highlighter. It does give a nice radiance and I appreciate that it’s non-greasy and blends well," says Seago.

Huda's Easy Bake Loose Baking & Setting Powder was one of our most highly-scored products, earning a permanent spot in our testing panel's makeup bags. Coming in a range of shades designed to blur, set and brighten all skin tones, the finely milled powder matttifies the skin with a subtly luminous finish so that your makeup never looks flat. It was inspired by founder Huda Kattan's preferred technique of baking to set makeup, and it ensures your makeup stays in place all day whilst eliminating shine.

"This is a stunning silky baking powder that leaves an airbrush-like finish on the skin," says makeup artist Min Sandhu. "It is finely milled, lightweight and blends seamlessly, giving a blurring effect. The texture and this powder being specifically designed for an easy bake make this formula innovative," she says.

It also won over Who What Wear UK's endorsement sales director Efi Mandrides. "This is a nice, finely milled powder so you can bake without it being too heavy. It worked well with a damp sponge since it was so fine, but it is equally easy to achieve a matte finish with a brush— I would definitely use this powder again and recommend it," she says.

If you can't live without lashes, you need to try Bonded's No Glue Lashes, which were a hit with our judging panel, scoring ten out of ten across the board. Offering up to five days of wear, these individual lash clusters use bonding technology rather than glue, which is far gentler on your natural lashes. They come in a range of lengths and styles to suit every eye shape and preference, from a natural flutter to volumised lashes. Our judges noted how well these lashes lasted, as well as how quick and easy they were to apply.

"I would recommend these as I am yet to find a lash glue that I love and I don't really like the faff of glueing lashes. These are quick and easy and the style I received was flattering," says makeup artist Michelle Leandra. "They are very sticky which means they can be fiddly at first, but following the instructions really helps, and this obviously helps with the longevity," she says.

"Easy to apply, long-lasting, natural-looking, not too heavy— I love them," says Mandrides. "The lasting power is amazing, and these are great for older eyes too. I used them on a bride who cried happy tears and they didn't budge," she says.

This was a tough category to judge. With so many lipsticks, balms, glosses and oils launching this year, it took a standout formula to win this award. Summer Fridays impressed our judges so much with its Dream Lip Oil that several of us immediately went out and bought additional shades. The silky oil formula not only feels luxurious on the lips (that will be the nine types of plant oils in this nourishing formula), but it actually lasts for many hours in comparison to other lip oils that seem to disappear into thin air. Our judges also loved the chic packaging and flattering shades that work across skin tones. This quite possibly could be the best lip oil ever created.

It totally won over our deputy editor, Maxine Eggenberger. "I'm a big fan of lip products, and over the past year, I’ve tried lots of oils in search of the perfect one. This is it," she says. "Summer Fridays has managed to create an oil that’s nourishing (the vitamin E made quick work of my typically dry, chapped lips with just a couple of wears), glossy, non-sticky, has a great colour payoff and lasts.

"Every other lip oil I own seems to evaporate after no time at all, but not Dream Lip Oil—I could still feel and see it on my lips long after application. I’m so impressed with this product that, after a week of wear, I decided to buy one for a friend, treating myself to another shade at the same time! So, when you ask, 'Would you buy this product again?', I already have."

Guerlain's impossibly chic lipstick and case required a special mention, both as a brilliant lipstick formula and an objet d'art. The lipstick case comes in several beautiful patterns to meet any style or aesthetic, and the innovative design features a mirror that pops up as you open the case to touch up your lipstick—a real conversation starter. It can also be engraved, making it a beautiful keepsake to gift or to treasure. Choose from a variety of classy shades in satin and velvet finishes, and you have your very own signature lipstick.

"The lipstick offers rich, luxurious colour with a smooth, hydrating formula that feels comfortable on the lips," says makeup artist Aarti Pal. It’s non-streaky, rubs in really well with fingers, doesn’t pill and really just lights up your face," she says. "It looks quite alarming when you pump it out because the gel is pretty dark, but you can customise the intensity of the colour depending on how much you use and whether you mix it with another product or use it solo. Confession: I haven't worn black mascara in months. No, I was not blessed with naturally long, doll-like lashes—quite the opposite, in fact! As a beauty editor who has tried many, many mascaras during my career, my biggest gripe is that so many mascaras smudge and flake. And if you're someone with both hooded eyes and oily skin like me, you'll know all too well the frustration of mascara transferring onto your brow bone throughout the day, or noticing that your mascara has flaked underneath your eyes at midday after a morning of meetings.

It's often worse during the summer, when feeble mascara crumbles at the slightest turn of warmer weather and slicker skin. Couple that with sweaty commutes, and it seems many mascaras just aren't cutting it. However, this all changed when I discovered the best tubing mascaras around, and I've had one in my makeup bag ever since.

What Is a Tubing Mascara?

Tubing mascara is very different from standard mascara, which is usually formed of oils or waxes that layer onto the lashes. Tubing mascaras are made of polymers, which wrap around each eyelash to create a 'tube' effect. The result is a longer-lasting, smudge and flake-free finish.

They're typically a lot easier to remove than traditional mascara, too. In fact, many can be removed with just warm water—you'll actually see the tubes slide off your lashes between your fingers when you come to remove them. A big bonus if you have sensitive eyes and find mascara hard to remove.

How We Tested the Best Tubing Mascaras

To help find the best tubing mascaras out there, I enlisted the help of the Who What Wear UK team. Each tester has experienced smudging or flaking underneath their eyes with mascara previously, so we were ready to put our tubing mascaras to the test. Our Verdict: My eyelashes are long, but few and far between and stubbornly straight. Because I have hooded eyes, I find some mascara formulas transfer above my eyes. This product from Hourglass is now my holy grail mascara for imparting length, holding a curl all day and making my lashes look incredibly long and defined. It doesn't smudge—even on my oily eyelids—or flake underneath my eyes throughout the day. A big thumbs up.

Amazingly, it's still easy enough to remove in the shower; the tubes slide right off between my fingertips with warm water. The brush itself features a bendy, plastic wand with a tapered shape that captures every lash and stretches them to their full potential. My lashes are stubbornly straight, but after using this with an eyelash curler, I noticed that my lashes stood to attention all day long—no drooping here. It's not the most volumising mascara around (I'd try Hourglass's Caution Extreme Lash Mascara (£34) instead if that's more your vibe), but as length and curl hold are my deal-breakers, this doesn't bother me. I'm obsessed with the wispy, fanned-out effect that would probably make Bambi jealous.

Needless to say, the packaging looks and feels luxe. The gold tube feels weighty to hold and is certainly a pretty addition to my makeup bag. I'm deducting a point only because it's a little on the expensive side, but I think it's totally worth the investment, seeing as you get 10g of product versus the standard 7 or 8g you get with most mascaras. If you're unsure, try the 5g travel mini size (£18) before committing to a full-sized tube.

2. Merit Clean Lash Mascara

Customer Review: "I really enjoy using this mascara! I dislike mascaras that clump, smudge, and flake and that’s the experience I have with most mascaras. Our Verdict: On the perennial quest for the perfect, naturally-fluttery lash, I’ve spent more money than I’d ever care to admit to myself on new mascaras—both new formulations to hit the market and also legacy mascaras I haven’t yet tried.
