In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, Mary-Kate Olsen made a rare public sighting last night, showcasing her often-imitated, never-replicated personal style as she departed from the New York City office that she shares with her sister, Ashley.

Of course, considering that she’s at the helm of one of the most coveted luxury fashion brands, one might assume that her wardrobe is filled with the opulent and decisively minimal silhouettes she designs. However, to know Mary-Kate is to know her own style philosophy is quite enigmatic.

The sleek offerings presented each season in Paris and lining their blissfully curated boutiques in London, Los Angeles, Manhattan and Amagansett might be the acme of refinement and stealth wealth, but that doesn’t mean she exclusively adheres to this doctrine. Instead, she pairs these immaculately crafted staples with a bohemian flair and slightly dishevelled energy—this is the woman who pioneered the beat-up Birkin and pen-stained Balenciaga City bag, after all—imbuing these pristine pieces with a lived-in, vintage-inspired feel.

To achieve this, you’ll often find Mary-Kate, or at least on the moments when paparazzi cameras surreptitiously spot her, teaming her swaddling virgin wool coats with brocade scarves and genuine antiques, which is exactly why, when she stepped out wearing a controversial flat shoe trend, my interest was immediately piqued.

For the occasion, Mary-Kate contrasted her sumptuous, longline outerwear and ultra-rare crocodile The Row Lady bag, which has an estimated value of £25,000, with a pair of ankle-high, lace-up shoes. Though not a trainer, this silhouette feels more reminiscent of a moccasin, in the vein of the viral Clarks Wallabees or Birkenstock Utti.

The exact shoes in question are called the Tyler, are made from a supple suede and retail for £930. However, as a fashion editor who lives in London can attest, it’s a shape you’ll more commonly find on finance bros working in Cannon Street or Canary Wharf. However, as cultural monuments like Succession have shown, these well-heeled corporate types aren’t immune to the pull of incredibly expensive but entirely inconspicuous clothing. Lest we forget that Kendall Roy was decked out in Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana and Jacques Marie Mage, even if he was wearing just a pair of navy trousers and a gilet.

It’s these contrasts that make Mary-Kate so endearing on a sartorial level. In a world of hyper-curated ensembles and over-polished personas, it’s refreshing to see a member of the celebrity style set step out in something unexpected, individualist and frankly, slightly frazzled. Though always underscored with an artistic flair and deceptively basic edge, she really is at her best when subverting tropes and subtly provocative.

Dripping in pendant necklaces, fur-trimmed jackets and chunky accessories, the looks also honoured the Japanese designer’s autumn/winter 2005 collection “Broken Brides”, which was a subtle full-circle moment, given it also acknowledged the year they first started attending.

Style Notes: You can rest assured that whenever Zendaya has confirmed her RSVP, a sartorial feast is guaranteed. As one of the pioneers of method dressing, the 29-year-old takes her job as a guest incredibly seriously. However, when it came to her co-chairing the event in 2024, she exceeded all expectations.

Not only did she both open and close the red carpet with two separate but incredibly visionary looks, she delivered the most hauntingly beautiful interpretation of the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. With the dress code being "The Garden of Time," which was inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story exploring themes of beauty, decay, and the fleeting nature of time, she wore a custom gown by John Galliano for Maison Margiela that embodied the ephemeral and elegant source material. Style Notes: Another iconic co-chair came in the form of Kate Moss. Attending the 2009 iteration, which adhered to the theme “The Model as Muse”, she proved the power that supermodels wield as the ultimate shapeshifter. A true incarnation of Marc Jacobs' vision for the evening, she ditched her Camden-core leather jackets, skinny jeans and knee-high boots for a gold lame mini dress and matching Elizabeth Taylor-inspired turban.

6. Zoë Kravtiz

Style Notes: One of the symbols for Anthony Vaccarello’s sensually sophisticated visions for Saint Laurent, Zoë Kravitz was truly firing on all cylinders when she arrived at the 2021 Met Gala. Dressing to the theme “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, the actor-turned-director’s phenomenally risqué wore what could only be described as a netted dress made from dazzling crystals that made the shape of itty-bitty YSL monograms. Because who needs a slip dress when you’re dripping in diamantes?

Style Notes: Why have one look when you can have four? That was the thesis question that Lady Gaga designed her 2019 Met Gala ensemble around, landing on a captivating Brandon Maxwell look that was part performance art, part moving installation and completely camp.

Beginning with a magenta overcoat that featured an elongated train and accompanied by five dancers, she later slipped into a gown before changing into a Madonna-esque column dress, before closing out her epic entrance in a sequin-encrusted black bralette, panties, fishnet tights and platform booties.

Style Notes: As someone who was appointed as one of Karl Lagerfeld’s “choupettes” as a teenager, it should come as no surprise that Lily-Rose Depp has almost unlimited access to Chanel’s archives for her public appearances.

At the 2019 Met Gala, The Idol star embraced the French maison’s most vampy silhouettes in a little black dress adorned with gold chains and gilded camellias. Style Notes: Though she might be known for her signature stealth wealth way of dressing, Kendall Jenner delivered her most high-octane look when attending the 2019 Met Gala in custom Versace. Wearing Marty Supreme orange and a feathered gown that left a trail of plumage, the look has become incredibly iconic over the years for the way the showgirl-esque silhouette completely transformed the model turned tequila maven. Later that year, for her Halloween-themed birthday party, the waiters were dressed up in this exact costume, proving just how camp the look actually was.

As announced by VOGUE, the theme of the 2026 Met Gala is "Costume Art". As always, the theme is derived from the Costume Institute's spring exhibition. According to the centre's head curator, Andrew Bolton, the theme addresses “the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection".

The museum reports that the exhibition will "pair garments with artworks to reveal the inherent relationship between clothing and the body". It continues, "from the formal to the conceptual, the aesthetic to the political, the individual to the universal, the illustrative to the symbolic, and the playful to the profound, these pairings are organised into a series of thematic body types that reflect their pervasiveness and endurance through time and cultures."

The exhibition is sponsored by tech billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, Saint Laurent and Condé Nast.

What is the Dress Code for the 2026 Met Gala?

Accompanying the theme, guests are invited to adhere to a compulsory dress code that further elucidates the crux of the exhibition. Keeping things incredibly simple for the 2026 event, the dress code is "Fashion is Art". This can be translated however the guest sees fit and can run the gamut from gowns that literally transpose famous works onto fabric to dresses that embrace the Métiers d'Art (or arts and crafts) that underscores any ensemble.

When I spotted this endearing shot of Elle and Dakota Fanning walking arm-in-arm, sharing a laugh, I knew I ought to be analysing their outfits like a proper fashion editor. But instead, my mind was occupied—darting straight to another iconic sister duo. You might be wondering exactly how the slipper shoe trend evolved from house shoe to a designer buy.

Like Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, the arrival of this footwear silhouette outside of the cosy four walls of our abodes was like one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. (Well, at least the members of humanity who worship at the altar of the Olsen Twins, wear Le Labo Santal 33 and think orange wine is the only acceptable thing to sip on).

You see, once upon a time, slippers were reserved for keeping your feet warm around the house, and they'd typically only be worn with a nightgown and cotton poplin pyjamas, akin to some geriatric children’s book character. (Or chic loungewear from the likes of Sleeper, Olivia Von Halle, Honeydew Intimates or Kat The Label.) Unless you were making a last-minute dash to a Pilates class or were someone as unfussy as Adam Sandler or Justin Bieber—two stars whose commitment to The Big Lebowski-esque level of casual dressing is unparalleled—stepping outside in slippers was unthinkable.

Then came the pandemic. Loungewear became socially acceptable, ushering in a wave of underwear-as-outerwear pieces, including slip nighties, lace-trimmed satin shorts and babydoll dresses, to reign supreme. The slipper shoe trend isn’t as intimate as these examples. Still, there is something to be said for the way this once relegated closed-toe mule has been given a new lease of life.

What is the Slipper Shoe Trend?

The slipper shoe trend refers to the way this casual indoor style has been reclaimed as chic, covetable and most importantly, suitable for city wear. According to Anna McLaren, the Australian designer and founder of independent fashion brand A.Emery, the slipper shoe trend speaks to the way our values have changed to prioritise comfort. This idea of ease is "no longer reserved for time spent at home," she tells me. "There’s a growing desire for pieces that feel effortless and luxurious at once, and that’s translated into footwear that’s pared-back, considered and comfortable enough for all-day wear."

To me, this is best seen in The Row’s spring/summer 2024 collection. Months after Mary-Kate Olsen was pictured around Los Angeles risking the California cold in black leather slippers, a grey tracksuit, a trench coat and a navy scarf, she and her twin sister presented a more opulent take on the style by recontextualising hotel slippers into a cult buy. The message was clear: when you can invest in all matters of luxury goods, what’s more self-indulgent than slipping into something snug as a slipper?

McLaren echoes this sentiment. "There’s a softness to the way people are dressing now; a leaning into calm, unfussy silhouettes and pieces that feel grounded and personal. The slipper trend speaks to that desire for simplicity."

On the heels of The Row’s endorsement came a flood of celebrity co-signs; Jennifer Lawrence wearing suede slippers whilst out in Manhattan, Kendall Jenner arriving at a New York hotel ahead of the 2025 Met Gala in a pair costing £960. Other designers followed too, including a patent pair shown on Miu Miu’s autumn/winter 2024 runway.

But why now, five years after homebound fashion became de rigueur? "People are looking for wardrobe staples that don’t feel performative, that prioritise ease without sacrificing design integrity," McLaren tells me about why slippers are quickly becoming adopted by refined minimalists.

"[The slipper shoe trend] is understated," she continues. "There’s no excess, no embellishment—it’s about restraint. The slipper-style silhouette reflects a broader shift toward timelessness and subtle design codes, which align naturally with a more refined and pared-back aesthetic. A flat shoe, particularly one with thoughtful proportions and premium materials, can feel just as sophisticated as a heel; it’s about how it’s made, how it’s styled and how it fits into a modern, intelligent wardrobe."

On the latter, you don’t have to tell me twice to embrace the flat. Earlier this month, I was perusing a Zara Home store in Athens and came across the most delicious slipper. Ivory satin and trimmed with faux fur, it was like an invitation to prioritise cosiness. Turns out, relaxation is the ultimate extravagance, after all.

It's not often we're treated to an Olsen sighting, so when it does happen, it's important to pay attention. Give us both twins at once, and our fashion minds (and wardrobes) are just about ready to go into overdrive. Today is one of those rare days. On this chilly November afternoon in New York, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were spotted out together in equally chic cold-weather ensembles, wearing oversized coats, ankle-grazing trousers and simple sneakers.

Recently, Zoë Kravitz was spotted out and about on one of the first days of the season wearing a chic floor-length cardigan sweater. Dressing chicly in the middle of a seasonal transition can be difficult, specifically the unpredictability of the time between autumn and winter. Just this weekend, for example, I stepped out of the house dressed in a hooded trench coat and a pair of knee boots, readied for a downpour, only to find glorious sunshine the moment I stepped off the train in town. Knowing what to wear and when to wear it is anyone's guess until the cooler temperatures truly settle in (by then, there's no room for doubt), but if there is one wardrobe staple I know I can rely on until that point, it's trousers.

Trousers have been integral to the 2022 aesthetic. From cut-outs to unbuttoned waistlines, there has certainly been a fair share of eyebrow-raising iterations along the way to entertain us. However, the overall trouser mood has been more classic and timeless, and, unlike other trends born on TikTok, the season's key trouser trends have been sparked by celebrities.

Early adopters of the top trouser trends of the season, celebrities have proven that comfort and style needn't be mutually exclusive with their ensembles. Take Dakota Johnson, who showcases a fresh silhouette of black tailored trousers as she runs errands in NYC. Then there's Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who makes a case for the elevated legging style that works outside of the home or the gym. Even leather trousers, once considered one of the more restrictive trouser options, are more appeasing in straight-leg form, as evidenced by Jasmine Tookes.

Style Notes: Never has the black tailored trouser been considered so fashionable as it has been this year. Slipping on a pair would previously give me flashbacks of getting ready for school. Style Notes: The '70s have played a big role in shaping the style aesthetic this year, with the return of the flared trouser causing much debate. In the same way that there is a mythical allure attached to French style, there is something magical and intangibly cool attached to the Olsens. Their über-luxurious brand, The Row, has fared well through the pandemic months, with retailer tidbits coming into us that those with the wealth are bulk-buying the brand's fine-quality basics, such as perfect-fit jumpers, plain trousers and pared-back leather goods. It's the trousers from this label that have been particularly popular of late. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Danielle Haim and Kendall Jenner have all been spotted in a pair of beige slacks that could easily pass of as vintage or menswear or from some small minimalistic indie brand, and yet the £1400 Phoebe trousers have become a cult item because it's well-documented that Ashley and Mary-Kate push the fit, finish and final details of each and every seemingly simple design to the max. In real life, when you get to caress pieces from The Row, they are beautiful.

Despite their dedication to creating only the most indulgent of wardrobe staples, the look is, if we're honest, actually quite a simple one to re-create. No, your secondhand and high-street homages won't have the same grade A cashmere touch, but if this vibe appeals to you, there are ways around it on a budget.

1. WHEN IN DOUBT, WEAR BLACK

"Black crows" was the term Suzy Menkes used a couple of years ago to describe what the fashion set once dressed like, before the explosion of documented street style shifted the look toward more outré ensembles. The Olsens still stand by this non-colour as their number one option for both casual and high-profile events. If you have black clothes in your wardrobe, try wearing them all at once with glowy skin, mermaid hair and a smize.

2. AND EVEN AT OTHER TIMES, KEEP IT NEUTRAL

So when black isn't on the agenda, things still need to be muted to feel like The Row. Occasionally, the design duo will introduce a pop of colour—a russet knit here, a claret satin bag there—but in general, things are either beige, white, cream, black or brown. This is not a world where printed co-ords or trending hues come into play.

3. GO (LITERALLY) BIG OR GO HOME

Both the Olsens' and The Row's biggest fans like volume and loose-fitting cuts. So it would seem that a fast track to Row-ing yourself up is to wear things big. However, I would add that many of these oversized pieces are often tailored and still have structure rather than, say, a giant sweatshirt or stretchy trousers. Dainty accessories are a good way to balance things out.

4. NEVER, EVER WEAR HEELS YOU CAN'T WALK IN—IN FACT, JUST WEAR FLATS

Suffice to say that Mary-Kate and Ashley are very rarely photographed in high heels, except for a few fancy event moments. More commonly, you'll find these two wearing flip-flops, ballet pumps and chunky boots. I remember Monikh (pictured here wearing The Row sandals) telling me that there's something about flat shoes that makes every outfit look that little bit cooler and more laid-back. She's right.

5. THAT NECKLACE YOU BOUGHT ON YOUR GAP YEAR? IT'S A SPECIAL ARTISANAL PIECE

While the twins aren't as boho now as their days being styled by Rachel Zoe, there is often a little hippy lilt to their accessory choices. Choosing artisanal jewellery or vintage evening bags, for example, is a very Olsen move. Whether you picked up a necklace on your travels a decade ago or can simply find something unique via Etsy or your local charity stores, this will add that point of interest to a super-simple outfit. Dream big and come up with an extravagant story to explain where and how you came across this rare find.

6. LOOK FOR SECONDHAND AND VINTAGE BASICS

The majority of Huntington-Whiteley's look here is from The Row, but I can assure you there are suitable get-the-look alternatives available at both the more minimal high-street stores (think COS, Weekday or Arket) as well as vintage and secondhand shops. Sometimes it's a case of deciding, "Right, I want to find some baggy white trousers," and being dedicated enough to finding the perfect pair. It can take time but far better to pinpoint a wardrobe staple you'll wear on repeat than to fall into a trend trap on a whim.

I have a confession to make: I'm borderline obsessed with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's not to the point where I know their birthday or Starbucks order by heart—more like a healthy, top-line sort of obsession. Being similar ages to the twins, I, quite literally, grew up with them on my television screen, and without an older sister of my own to look up to, I found myself taking cues from the duo. They were cool, funny, intelligent, and stylish, and unlike a real-life sibling scenario, they didn't get mad when I shamelessly copied them.

As a tween, I remember trying to re-create the looks from their latest films in Tammy Girl. Thankfully, I no longer have a penchant for adhesive glitter or high-low dresses with sheer layers—nor, of course, do Mary-Kate and Ashley. Instead, they've become two of the chicest dressers on the celebrity circuit, and although their appearances in public are limited, they never disappoint.

I'm an entirely different body shape from the Olsens. Still, their looks provide me with endless outfit inspiration. And one thing I've come to find over the years is that Mary-Kate and Ashley have a penchant for very classic shoes.

With shoes, it's easy to get swept up in trends, as they feel less committal than a full-blown outfit. For example, you might be more tempted to wear a bright shoe than a full-blown dress in the same colour. They're an easy way to dip your toe in the sartorial water (pun intended). But as far as the Olsens are concerned, they stick to simple, timeless shoe styles year-round, which I think is the secret to their effortlessly polished aesthetic. Seeing as we find ourselves in spring, I've decided to take a closer look at the shoes the Olsen twins tend to wear at this time of year to inform my springtime looks. It turns out that there are five styles they wear on repeat. Handily, they're staples, so you may already own some, if not all, of the pairs. Since taking on the role of Who What Wear's social media editor back in November, I've noticed a few things about our audience. Firstly, there's unanimous agreement that bubblegum pink is the most on-trend shade for spring. Thirdly, we're all still completely and utterly obsessed with the Olsen twins, even after all these years.

Having grown up admiring the pair, I was as into their outfits in 2004 when they donned 'I Heart New York' T-shirts alongside red skirts for the film New York Minute as I am today when I see them dressed in casual, oversize shirts and straight-leg jeans. 

The pair possess the unique ability to look thoroughly contemporary while wearing timeless, classic outfits made up of the wardrobe staples we're all likely to own—albeit at a different end of the price-point spectrum. Often opting for simple colour palettes in shades of black, white and cream, there's nothing particularly groundbreaking about the way the Olsens dress, but it is this simplicity that makes their looks so appealing.

If you're petite, you know all too well that shopping can be somewhat of a struggle. While some brands do cater for those under 5'4", petite women are still a largely underrepresented group within the retail realm. Trouser hems are ridiculously long—so much so that they often leave me looking like I'm setting off for my first day of clown college (while the waistline tends to slip down to my hips). It's frustrating, to say the least. Which is why I've turned to the A-list to help me with my petite plight.

So many short celebrities have excellent fashion sense (think Sienna Miller, Zoë Kravitz and the ever-stylish Olsen twins), so I've deciphered their go-to looks to create the ultimate petite capsule, the fruits of which you'll find below. The goal isn't to change the way you look; instead, it's about making your physique more in-proportion. Once you crack how to do that, you can wear anything you please. From the dress Sienna swears by to the shoes Ashley rarely leaves the house without, keep scrolling to see the few key pieces short celebrities rely on.

Style Notes: Be it in suit, trouser or dress form, vertical stripes are an essential part of any petite girl's wardrobe as the lines create the illusion of length, as evidenced by 5'2" Zoë Kravitz. Furthermore, ensure you keep the look tailored to enhance your shape.

Style Notes: Ashley Olsen's go-to shoes are undoubtedly flesh-coloured pumps, which she's worn on a multitude of occasions. By matching your footwear to the colour of your skin, you trick the eye into thinking you have longer legs, balancing out your silhouette in the process. We'd never believe Ashley is a mere 5'0" in this outfit.

Style Notes: Ashley isn't the only Olsen who knows how to dress her petite frame well: Mary-Kate—who stands at 5'1"—is also an expert. One of her failsafe tricks is to cinch her waist with a wide belt. In doing so, she divides her body proportionately, making her seem taller in the process. Simple but so effective.

Style Notes: You might not think it, but high necklines give the appearance of a longer torso, which in turn makes your overall frame look longer, too. Case in point? Lupita Nyong'o, who, at 5'4", looks significantly taller in her Gucci dress.

Style Notes: Measuring 5'1", Nicole Richie continually serves up excellent petite outfit inspiration, and this ensemble is no exception. Her bold printed blouse commands the overall focus, allowing her block-colour maxi skirt to elegantly drape to the floor, which bestows her longer-looking legs. Masterful.

Style Notes: You might not think it, but midi skirts are extremely flattering on petite frames. They sit neatly on the waist, helping to define it while skimming your legs to create a flattering silhouette. The flash of ankle on show then makes your legs look leaner. Indeed, we'd never guess Jenna Coleman was 5'2" in this getup.

Style Notes: Scarlett Johansson, at 5'3", knows that wide-leg trousers are a petite's best friend. They're classic, hang elegantly and make your legs look never-ending. Make like Scarlett and pair yours with a fuss-free tee and strappy sandals.

Style Notes: If you're constantly having to take long dresses to your tailor to be hemmed, it's high time you added a dip-hem style to your wardrobe. Sienna Miller, who is 5'4", wears them on repeat, as they give the same elegant air as maxi styles but require no alterations whatsoever. Also, much like midi skirts, the subtle flash of ankle helps break up your overall silhouette, making you look taller, too.

Style Notes: Just because you're petite doesn't necessarily mean your body is in proportion. If you're like Lucy Hale, who is 5'2" and has shorter legs in comparison to her torso, try balancing out your frame with a pair of high-waisted jeans.

One Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen fan just took her fondness of the twins to a whole new level. Artist Laura Collins created a series of paintings called The Olsen Twins Hiding From the Paparazzi, and there's now a Kickstarter campaign to turn the series into its very own museum exhibit.

As Yahoo! Style reported, Collins has teamed up with the curators of Brooklyn museum THNK1994, Matt Harkins and Viviana Olen, to bring the paintings to life. They explain their plan on their Kickstarter campaign: "For this very special exhibit, the THNK1994 Museum would like to rent a vacant storefront and put up a pop-up exhibition for two weeks in April where anyone can come in anytime."

Mary-Kate and Ashley have some major news to share—and no, it has nothing to do with Fuller House. The press-shy sisters just gave a rare interview to WWD about their plans to further develop their Elizabeth and James brand, plans that include international growth and expansion of all product categories. But by far the most exciting announcement is the launch of Elizabeth and James's first-ever retail store, which will open at The Grove in Los Angeles this July.

“There’s so much foot traffic there," Ashley told WWD. "We were born and raised in Los Angeles, so for us, it’s where our customer is. The customer’s already there; she doesn’t need to drive."

According to WWD, the space will be 3000 square feet and offer clothes, jewellery, accessories, sunglasses, fragrances, and even some vintage wares. And with that news, we're officially counting down the days to July. Click here to read the full interview over at WWD.
