We'll be the first to admit that we spent a solid 15 to 20 minutes combing through Madewell's new arrivals today (no regrets). The verdict is that the store basically has everything you could possibly need in stock, including items for work (this sweater pencil skirt), nights out (this velvet slip dress), the weekend (this hoodie), and holiday travel (this rose-colour coat).

One of our favourite Madewell categories to shop each fall is undoubtedly the retailer's assortment of cosy sweaters. With a wide variety of perfectly constructed options to choose from, it doesn't make for an easy choice. But we were quite drawn to a retro-inspired, fuzzy textured option this time around, which comes in equally-covetable blush or chartreuse. And we clearly weren't alone in our thinking, as the sweater's description notes that it was Madewell's best-selling pre-order piece.

Our styling advice? Go with the retro look and wear it with a pair of cropped corduroy flares. Shop the sweater below, and consider yourself warned that it probably won't be in stock for long.

It's no surprise that New Yorkers and Parisians are different in more ways than one. The French are less enthusiastic when it comes to trends, blowouts, and consistent manicures while Americans reserve their most casual looks for the weekend but are okay with wearing their workout clothes outside the gym.

But former Parisian/current New Yorker Camille Rowe knows about one major difference that just might surprise you. In an interview for Madewell, the model revealed that the French are nowhere close to the "sneakerhead" status of New York. "In Paris, I'd never wear sneakers. It's such a New York thing, like working out. It's almost taboo in Paris," said Rowe.

Ah, Madewell. How we love thee more and more with each season… Not surprisingly, the brand's fresh crop of new arrivals just dominated our spring wish lists. Ah, every woman's constant plea: that she may own and wear a pair of high heels that don't absolutely murder her feet and make her life miserable. We've done our best to help provide you with tips to wearing high heels without pain, but sometimes an expert must be brought in.

We asked our resident stylist Marissa Webb to share her pro tips for making heels as comfortable as they can be, and she had some dynamite wisdom to disperse. 

"Your favourite heels might look great, but if you can't walk in them, it really takes all the fun and beauty out of them," Webb astutely observes. "Some tricks I've learned over time have saved me on countless occasions."

If you have to choose between a pair that's slightly snug or slightly loose, go with loose; you can always pad them, but hoping they will stretch out usually ends in disappointment.

Every heel doesn't need to be 4-plus inches tall. I love a kitten heel, and they're almost like wearing flats; they don't put as much pressure on the ball of your foot, which is often the source of discomfort.

Take breaks from pointed-toe heels. Rotate between a round toe, open toe, and pointed toe. Sure, pointy might look great, but it certainly won't help your toes. Especially the poor pinky!

Even if you think you're in your most comfortable heels, be prepared if it's going to be a long day or night. A combination of padding the footbed and cotton balls stuffed in the toes is my ultimate solution.

My favourite trick is cotton balls. I figured this out at a hotel one night, when I couldn't find heel pads and one my right shoe kept flopping off. Stuff the cotton balls into the toe of your shoe until the fit is right. Keep a few extra in your purse for just such an occasion.

No matter what else you do, do not wait to break in your brand new heels at that special event you picked them out for. You haven't developed a relationship with the shoes yet, and you don't want to spoil the night by finding out too late that your heels have a mean side. Wear them at least once before the event so you know how to prep them properly.

There seems to be a consensus among members of the fashion community that New York girls just do it better. Paris might still be the reigning fashion capital of the world, but there's a certain je ne sais quoi about the way NYC gals dress.

To help us capture that essence, we enlisted the help of Marissa Webb, our resident stylist and full-time New York City resident. We asked her: What is this magical formula NYC girls use to get dressed everyday?

"I don’t think there is a must-use 'formula,' so I use that term loosely," Webb says. "However, I do think having a few styling tricks up our sleeves helps us New York gals pull it together every day."

Have your accessories ready to go! Always have accessories top of mind for days when you need to pump up your look and you don’t have the luxury of time. They can quickly take a look from simple to fashion-forward."

Because the pace of New York doesn’t slow down, we city ladies probably give our shoes a lot more thought than one would consider to be normal. One trick is pairing comfortable shoes with something dressy, or the reverse: pair dressy heels with something casual on top.

Always think of opposites and contrast–an outfit usually looks more interesting with items that fall under different categories. Think long with short, dressy with casual, soft with hard, and masculine with feminine. This could be as simple as wearing a nicely tailored, straightforward suit and popping on a pair of dramatic chandelier earrings.

Know the proportions that work for you. Wearing heavy, slouchy layers on top? Style them over something slim on the bottom. If you're going slouchy and baggy on the bottom, pair it with something slim on top.

Have your third piece ready. New York City girls know you always need a third piece, even if it's 100 degrees out; once you walk into the office, you’re going to be freezing.

You should know when to go bold or go neutral with your makeup. My formula is one of opposites: If I’m wearing something bright and bold, I play down my makeup, and if I’m wearing neutral colours and need a pop, I’ll add a punched-up lip or eye.

Lastly, all New York girls know: when you're not sure what to wear and you're out of time, you can always rely on black or white.

If there's one prominent female figure in the fashion retail world right now who does menswear-inspired dressing better than anyone, it's Banana Republic's Marissa Webb. 

Our resident stylist does borrowed-from-the-boys dressing so well—and you, dear reader, took notice. We've received a ton of questions centered around how to replicate Webb's signature style, so we decided to pick her brain on the matter. As it turns out, it's not as simple as tossing on a boyfriend blazer and going out the door.

"Borrowing from the boys doesn’t always mean literally wearing men's clothing," Webb says. "It's about contrast and proportions. However, I personally do not hesitate to shop in the boys’ section and borrow from my fiancé’s closet. Think of it as your options being doubled!"

The boyfriend shirt is an easy item to mix into your wardrobe, because the fit is a bit looser and easy. To pull it together, pair it with a skinny skirt or bottom for the juxtaposition of proportion. Then toss on a great pair of heels for that interesting contrast.

When styling the boyfriend blazer, it's not always about it just being oversize. It's also about the tailoring and the details. I often pair my “borrowed from the boys” blazer with feminine accessories, like heels or a scoop-neck T-shirt. Or I’ll add a belt to the natural waist to give it more shape.

Men's accessories are there for you to explore! I usually use them as an accent with more-feminine items from my closet. Ties and bow ties I’ll mix with a slim button-down or shift dress. Men's watches get mixed in with my other bracelets, and I actually prefer men's perfumes because they’re usually not as powdery and sweet.

Sometimes you just want that oversize cosy sweater. I wear mine all year round with skinny jeans, over a silk cami dress, or with shorts on a breezy beach. For me, in order not to look sloppy or like a big sack, it’s the play on contrast and shape that’s important. Mix in your feminine pieces, even if it’s just a bold lip for balance and to separate you from the boys.

Summer is fabulous and all, but one of the downsides is that the hottest season is filled with the most events. How's a girl supposed to stay cool, comfortable, and cute while sweating buckets under the harsh rays of the sun?! 

Well, there are ways. And we consulted our resident stylist, Banana Republic's Marissa Webb, to share them with us. Below, Webb selflessly provides her top five tips for staying cool while looking hot for all your dressy events this season.

I personally love comfortable airy dresses for hot summer days. I usually go for a woven dress over a knit dress, especually when I'm going for a more dressed-up look.

I love a great short suit as a modern update to the pantsuit for summer!

Printed lightweight pants or skirts paired with a crisp top can give just the right amount of ease (with polish!) for a dressed-up look that’s still comfortable during the summer heat. Try a maxi-length skirt or lightweight trouser paired with a comfortable top; the length can help to make it feel dressier and more elegant.

Accessories are a great way to add polish to a comfortable summer outfit. Grab a pair of heels in place of flats to pair with your lightweight summer dress, or add a statement necklace to your easy T-shirt or blouse. Keep the outfit casual, but layer up the jewellery, and don’t forget the toes and the lipstick! Often times it's the little details that have the most impact. A simple outfit can be instantly dressed up with a bold lip and polish.

In place of a third piece like a blazer or cardigan, try a larger scarf that you can toss over your shoulders.

Figuring out how to wear denim in the hot summer months is often a trickier task than it appears on the surface. Denim shorts are pretty much a "duh" moment, but what about the heavier pieces you relied on during spring?

I always have white denim for summer, but I do like to incorporate other coloured denim as well.

The perfect denim jacket is timeless for me, and it carries me throughout all the different seasons. There are so many ways to layer and style them.

The lightweight denim shirt (often borrowed from my fiancé's closet!) takes me from the office to the beach, and it travels everywhere with me during summer.

I love a denim dress in all different shapes, but currently I’m coveting them with midlength skirts.

Everyone needs the perfect cropped jeans for summer!

You need a perfectly broken-in flare—think Jane Birkin.

By this point in your sartorial life, you likely understand the important role good accessorizing plays in any outfit. (Thanks, Olivia Palermo.) But it bears repeating: Without a solid approach to planning your accessories, you're going nowhere fast—they're crucial to any stylish look.

Our resident styling expert Marissa Webb agrees, and she took the time to share her thoughts on the matter with us (and now you!).

"I consider accessories the icing on the cake," Webb says. "Even if you consider yourself a more conservative or classic dresser, accessories are where many woman are willing to be a little more daring. It's about taking accessories, thinking about them differently, and incorporating them into your wardrobe and personal style, but not taking them so literally."

Shoes are one of the items that can easily take your look from work to play, or from casual to dressy. This is where I would definitely invest in colour and pattern.

Yes, scarves all year round! There are many ways to utilise scarves. I've actually found some of my favourite scarves in the men's department. Think of other ways you can style them beyond the traditional "wrap around the neck." To add movement to your outfit, drape it around and let the two sides hang loosely down the front. I also love to layer scarves under blazers for an added touch of texture and dimension. Scarves are also a good way to incorporate colour and print into your look.

It's rare that I leave the house without my jewellery. Besides having sentimental value, jewellery is a great way to express your unique style. Jewellery can be season-less, but it's also one of those items you can update in an affordable way for each season. For example, I tend to gravitate towards more casual, bold-coloured jewellery during summer, like opaque, bright coloured bracelets and necklaces. I love to layer bright necklaces for a bold colour vibe, and I also love a strong statement necklace.

Belts are one of those items that I'm a little fickle on. Sometimes it's all about the belt, other times, belts can complicate the look. When I do wear belts, I tend to go for a wider style if I'm going to wear it at my true waist. I've also been known to double up on the belts, especially if they are thin and can be layered over each other. Sometimes, if I feel like I need a little extra graphics or texture in my outfit, I'll reach for a belt that isn't just classic black.

I gravitate towards statement earrings during the warmer seasons. They add a great finishing touch to the less layered, easy way of dressing during spring and summer. I like the contrast of a dramatic earring with that ease; most of us think of pulling these out for dressed-up occasions, but the juxtaposition is what I find more interesting.

As we've discussed before, knowing when to spend and when to save on fashion can be tricky. While it's probably pretty obvious by now that it makes sense to spend a little more on classic pieces, while saving on more of-the-moment trends, today we're getting even more specific.
