Every August, there's a point when I mentally check out of summer. The linen dresses I couldn't get enough of in June suddenly feel a little tired, sandals have lost their appeal, and I find myself thinking almost exclusively about what I'll wear once the temperature finally drops. Autumn fashion has that effect on me. Maybe it's the return of actual layering or the promise of a really great coat, but no season makes me want to shop quite like this one.

This year, though, I'm less interested in the broad-stroke trends we've been talking about since the autumn/winter collections first came down the runways. I already know the overarching mood of the season. What I want to know now is far more specific: Which exact pieces are about to become the pieces?

You know the ones. They're not necessarily the loudest thing on the runway, nor are they attached to the biggest logo. Instead, they start quietly appearing in the wardrobes of the people whose style I pay closest attention to—the editors, buyers, stylists, and industry insiders who somehow manage to get six months ahead of everyone else.

After months of looking at the autumn/winter 2026 collections, keeping tabs on new-season arrivals, and taking mental notes on what fashion people are already gravitating toward, I have a pretty good idea of which pieces are headed in that direction. In a fashion landscape underpinned by social media, where nothing stays under the radar, it’s become a new kind of capital. A blue tick of authentication that conveys more than IYKYK (in 2026, everyone knows). These days, it's about whether you have a feature on Perfectly Imperfect, co-hosted a La Watchparty with Lyas and had the privilege of sitting on Bella Freud's couch for a dedicated episode of her Fashion Neurosis podcast.

And whilst it helps to have designers on WhatsApp or a discount at Dover Street Market, one’s IQ—fashion or otherwise—can be improved, enabling you to better serve your wardrobe. Endrit Nurcaj does work in fashion as the style editor of Encore!, but doesn’t live in a fashion capital (the lifestyle magazine is based in Switzerland). His fashion philosophy is the opposite of what you might expect from someone with a high fashion IQ. For starters, he doesn’t like gatekeeping, and names the brands he’s loving at the moment as RECTO, Nothing Written (both of which are Korean) and Welter Shelter.

"I like sharing things I discover. If anything, I’m sometimes worried about the opposite phenomenon: ending up in a very small circle where everyone follows the same people, wears the same brands and starts looking at fashion through the same lens," he tells me. His biggest style influence also might surprise you. "Ralph Lauren is probably the obvious answer (and a cliché one)," he says. "Through all his different labels and worlds, he somehow always remains himself. Purple Label is Ralph Lauren, Polo Ralph Lauren is Ralph Lauren, RRL is Ralph Lauren. They are completely different facets of the same identity. I love that he never seems trapped in one particular fashion prism," says Nurcaj, who always finds a way to make a shirt by Polo Ralph Lauren, say, look more than the sum of its parts, pairing a sun-bleached denim style with distressed jeans on a recent holiday in Las Vegas.

Having the self-awareness to like what you like and let that—not friends, "tastemakers", trends or algorithms—determine how you dress is part of the process. Olivia Singer, the editorial director of Prototype, springs to mind; someone who never falls into cliché territory despite only wearing black. As does Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, the fashion director and stylist with a self-described "maximalist sensibility and peacocking tendencies".

"I’m much more interested in someone who has developed their own visual language over time," says Nurcaj, who also prefers shopping in person. "I like the whole experience of it: talking to a salesperson, looking at the clothes properly, touching the fabrics and, most importantly, trying things on. I need that physical connection with a garment. I’m not particularly interested in being "in season" either. I’ll happily buy something in the sales, in an outlet, secondhand or somewhere completely unexpected. For me, the place matters less than the feeling of finding the right piece."

As well as analogue shopping, you can expand the horizons of your taste by delving into the "contemporary" bracket of brands. I’ve recently picked up two on the more pared-back side as they’ve both just launched at Net-a-Porter: Ruohan, the eponymous womenswear label by Wang Ruohan, and FANE, a handbag brand from Paris.

You can also consume forms of media that prioritise original thought as much as visuals. Substack differs from Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok in one vital way. "The platform isn’t built to keep you in an endless doom scroll; it's built to connect you with creatives you'll actually love, and hopefully leave you feeling inspired," says Farrah Storr, Substack’s head of international. The site has just announced a translation feature that means it’s never been easier to not only find content outside your own echo chamber, but consume it, too. Ultimately, the appeal of the newsletter form is simple: it’s "a real person telling you what style means to them," says Storr.

Substack’s deputy editor, Danya Issawi, who was previously fashion news writer at The Cut, was already centring her own style before she took a side-step outside of the fashion industry. "Having spent years working in and around fashion, I honed in on what my personal style is and feels like whilst blocking out noise from the industry at large," she tells Who What Wear UK.

Her favourite newsletters—by writers who undoubtedly have very high fashion IQs—offer no set way to be "on trend" or "It". Instead, they’re much more personal. "There is no singular way anyone goes about it. Every publisher brings their own unique perspective and follows their curiosity, which is what I’ve always been hungry for as a reader. I always enjoy Gabriella Karefa-Johnson’s voicey dispatches from fashion weeks and her commentary on the industry writ large. Viv Chen’s posts always inspire me when I’m vintage shopping or getting dressed. Liana Satenstein is an absolutely delightful read. [She's] able to weave trend reporting in with her hilarious, obsessive tone. Biz Sherbert does exactly what I loved most when I was writing about fashion and takes an earnestly curious, anthropological lens to what people are wearing across the country," says Issawi.

From Versace's face skirt to Chanel's drop-waist styles, we're currently living in through a party skirt redux. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the key autumn skirt trends. Though skirts rarely receive the attention that jeans, loafers or leather jackets do come this time of year, sleeping on their possibilities would be a shame.

Skirts offer a break from the occasional mundanity of trousers. And, depending on the trend you explore, they transcend simply being another style of bottoms. They become sculptural elements, a route for creative expression and a more interesting way to jazz up the silhouette you’d wear in any of your go-to autumn outfits. Plus, with winter ahead, time feels limited for making the most of a skirt—at least without tights.

Do skirts really change that much year-to-year? I’d argue both yes and no, if you’ll allow me. The same motifs, prints and fabrics do often show face when autumn arrives (plaid, leather, wool… you get the gist). But it always surprises me the number of innovative ways designers find to make them feel fresh. How else would florals continuously hold their place as an emblem of spring if it weren’t for this type of creativity? Speaking of which, autumn is co-opting the spring hallmark this season.

More specifically, brocade florals, which feel distinctly primed for autumn. These textured skirts flitted and floated down the autumn/winter 2026 runways at Balmain, Kallmeyer, Saint Laurent, Chanel and Dries Van Noten. Floral brocade also hints at the other skirt trends for this season, as many of them err one of two ways. The first being bohemian with that notably witchy edge that only materialises this time of year. (Just look at Fendi's all-black lace skirts and Simone Rocha's lace pencil skirts).

On the other side of the trend spectrum sit sharper silhouettes and cleaner edges, from Miu Miu’s knee-length pencil skirts, revamped and modernised from the early 2010s, and the trickle of zipper-laden skirts found at Hermès and Eckhaus Latta. The rest, such as asymmetric hemlines and boldly embellished surfaces, all manage to fit neatly somewhere in the middle.

1. Blooming Brocade

Style Notes: Groundbreaking? Yes, actually. Whilst spring and summer are most often preceded by a haze of flower prints of all types and sizes, autumn is seeing a resurgence of this motif, in a way that feels more fitting for shorter days and colder temperatures. Specifically, florals are appearing in brocade textures and materials, which provides each flower with more tactility and depth. The colour combinations are also richer, as are the patterns, which are reminiscent of carpet and textile bags found within this year’s bohemian autumn dressing attire. That said, brocade still has a slightly more polished finish to it. Think less quilted and more opulent.

2. Zip It

Style Notes: What can one do to revitalise the humble zipper? Quite a lot, it turns out. This isn’t a reinvention of the wheel, per se, but many designers have chosen to take this common functional element and push it into the spotlight rather than hide it within this year's classic autumn outfits. Whilst 2025 saw knitted zip-ups, 2026 has moved to zippered skirts. There’s something that feels slightly risky about a full-zip skirt. The metal teeth already give it an edge, but having one run down the centre or sides of a skirt feels like living a little more boldly (even if it purely exists for decorative purposes). If this inspires you, look no further than Victoria Beckham’s take, which pushes the trend further with fully sheer knee-length skirts featuring full-length zippers.

3. Bohemian Chic

Style Notes: Bohemian fashion trends are maintaining their longevity—right in time for the season when you expect this particular style. The free-spirited, gauzy looks of summer are transforming into garments that feel a little more earthy, grounded and a touch witchy. This pertains to skirts, too. You can look to Zimmermann's spliced scarf handkerchief-hem skirt, which looks as if you took a variety of finds from your grandmother's closet and sewed them together. Or, take Chloé's approach in combining a classic autumn pattern (plaid) and rendering it in a tiered manner for a distinctly boho finish. Just peruse through your favourite boho brands, and you'll find there is much to choose from for your wardrobe.

4. Uneven Cut Gems

Style Notes: Hovering more closely to the camp of sculptural and artistic are asymmetric skirts, which were abundant at this season’s shows. No length was left behind, as micro minis, midis and maxi skirts all arrived with unbalanced hemlines (intentionally so, of course). Some, such as Ann Demeulemeester's leant more into the ruffles and lace, giving it a categorisation akin to boho. Others, like those from Alaïa and Erdem, felt sculptural and polished, ready for a day at the office. We've seen asymmetric cardigans before, and even disconnected bobs in the world of hairstyling, yet despite the visual discordance, the skirts—and any garment with this lack of equilibrium—render beautifully.

I still vividly remember the first time I saw a pair of Tabis in real life. I was a fashion intern attending a PR event, and at the time, Tabis felt like the ultimate anti-fashion statement—the kind of deliberately challenging shoe reserved for the industry’s most avant-garde dressers. And yet, when I spotted that unmistakable hoof-like toe peeking out from beneath a pair of wide-leg pinstripe trousers, something clicked. Yes, they were objectively a little strange, but why did I suddenly want to rip off my decidedly boring trainers?

Of course, the Tabi’s ability to provoke is nothing new. The moment Martin Margiela debuted his now-iconic Tabi boot in 1988 is etched into every fashion person's brain; models walked—in white lab coats—down the runway with the soles dipped in red paint, leaving those unmistakable split-toe footprints behind them. Since the dawn of what we rather grandly refer to as "civilisation", men have been adorning themselves with all manner of odds and sods in the interest of cementing superior social status over each other. Feathers, beads, gold, jewels, the skin of our fellow mammals: you name it, we’ve worn it.

Right up until the 19th century, men’s fashion was often as flamboyant and ostentatious as women's, and it was only with the arrival of Queen Victoria's permanent downward smile that men's fashion became much more restrained and restrictive. Then, from out of the closet burst the gays, slowly injecting much-needed experimentation into the male wardrobe. For years, men’s fashion was considered a purely homosexual affair. That was until David Beckham gave the straight community permission to experiment with it back in the '90s and '00s. Since then, ever so slowly, we’ve seen heterosexual men become much more comfortable reaching for something other than a T-shirt and jeans. First came Becks in his sarong, then men started wearing (slightly) heeled boots again and now the boys have joined the girls and the gays in the arena of the designer handbag. When it comes to spending money, men and women are very different. In my opinion, women often spend money on themselves to feel good, whereas men tend to spend money to make themselves look good to others. They are happy to drop huge amounts of cash—be it on cars, art or now, luxury accessories—as long as other people can see them do it. And, in my opinion, straight men are also only really comfortable dropping serious cash on items they consider investments.

The luxury watch market cottoned on many years ago, and its understanding of male spending logic is summed up perfectly by the iconic Patek Philippe ads that advise the viewer that someone never really owns a Patek Phillipe; they merely look after it for the next generation. The opportunity to create legacy is irresistible to men, and so any brand that can tap into that primal desire is onto a winner.

Precious stones, watches and designer clothes are the new beads and feathers. They show status, and the more you have of them, the bigger the impression you make on your fellow man, or, crucially, women. For the last couple of decades, the height of male sartorial power spending was the watch. The watch you wore defined your social and financial status. (I remember going to a wedding once without wearing a watch. The groom looked at me like I was the saddest person in the world and asked why I wasn’t wearing a Rolex, wondering if it was because I didn’t own one, before proceeding to ask me if I would like to "borrow" one of his to wear for the day if that were true.)

Now, with men reaching for new ways to show off their spending and sartorial credentials, the luxury handbag market has entered the chat. Over the past couple of years, handbags have shot up in price. In a decade, the retail price of an Hermès Birkin has increased by 44%, and the rest of the market has floated up with it. Handbags have gone from being something to carry your essentials in to full-on wealth signifiers and investment pieces in their own right. No longer are designer handbags something the everyday girlie can save up for; the crème de la crème is unattainable for most, and therefore über-desirable to a man with spending power.

By raising prices, brands have started appealing to a smaller market, but one with a larger chequebook, which is why so many men are now seen flaunting designs previously reserved for the female shopper. Thanks to the internet, we also have instant access to the prices of these pieces, so when we see Harry Styles walking around with a leopard-print Chanel Maxi Flap Bag with a retail price of £7170, it's not just about showing us his personal style; it's also a financial flex. And, importantly, these designs appeal to the straight man, as others are less likely to ridicule him for carrying a handbag that costs more than their car.

The pull of a designer handbag also lies in the fact that body shape and age never come into play. You cannot be too big, small, old or young for a high-quality design. A black Birkin is a black Birkin no matter who you are. A handbag is also a way for men to express themselves through fashion without clothes that would perhaps make them feel uncomfortable. A male celebrity can wear a blue jumper and jeans à la Jacob Elordi, shoving his keys, wallet and phone into a Bottega bag and guaranteeing himself a slot on any best-dressed list. The same goes for footballers like Erling Haaland, who can descend from their private jets in boring tracksuits clutching crocodile handbags worth more than most people earn in a year, and be hailed as style icons.

We can't just jump in without a little background, however. Miu Miu is too iconic a fashion house, and understanding the history and unique outlook gives a better insight into the pieces you purchase and will no doubt adore wearing.

Founded by Miuccia Prada, who is also the co-creative director of Prada, along with Raf Simons, Miu Miu takes its name from Mrs. Prada's childhood nickname and is known for its more subversive and coquettish styles. Miuccia told System Magazine in 2014, "The creative process in Miu Miu is completely different from that of Prada. Miu Miu is not as complicated and thought out as Prada. Rather than being young, Miu Miu is immediate. Prada is very sophisticated and considered; Miu Miu is much more naïve."

It's an odd juxtaposition. Whilst Miu Miu may be a luxury brand, it speaks to a much wider audience, seeing past the veneers of class and status much more so than some other long-standing luxury fashion houses. Miu Miu is the loud one; the friend who isn't worried about going against the grain. She's not going to conform, and you can give her a uniform, but she'll still make it her own, maybe with knee-high socks, sporty sunglasses or by stealing her older sister's hobo bag. This is by no means a hindrance to Miu Miu's popularity. As of Q2 2026, it sits comfortably as the second-hottest fashion brand on the Lyst Index. (Just a smidge behind Matthieu Blazy's Chanel.)

Miu Miu also sees potential, so it's no wonder the brand has helped launch many famous names, from models (Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen) to movie stars (Chloë Sevigny, Drew Barrymore) and even nascent It girls (Alexa Chung, Cortisa Star). More recently, Lupita Nyong’o, Hailey Bieber, Naomie Harris, Emma Chamberlain and Gigi Hadid are just a very small sampling of the stars fronting campaigns and ads and wearing Miu Miu on red carpets.

However, I should really caveat this by saying that "It girl" is far too gendered a term. Miu Miu appeals to many, regardless of how you identify, and it celebrates the unique little quirks we possess rather than squashing them in the name of polished luxury. The runways and campaigns often glitter with the faces of stars that not only have deep fan bases but are multi-hyphenates in their own right, which makes them all the more interesting. Emma Corin, Ethel Cain and Mia Goth all strutted down the autumn/winter 2023 runway; Troye Sivan modelled the spring/summer 2024 collection and Gillian Anderson just walked the moss-laden floor of Miu Miu's autumn/winter 2026 show.

Miu Miu is refined, yes, but there's a quirkiness to its aesthetics. The brand embraces the everyday—and sometimes the weird—giving it an aesthetic that isn't impeccably polished, but is somehow still covetable. It's a reminder of what fashion can be when we let restraint go and allow our more creative selves to show through.

Miu Miu also takes heaping servings of gender stereotypes and laughs at them. In most shows, you'll see the blurring of menswear and womenswear. Apron dresses are paired with brogues.
