If there’s one beauty product I’ve become obsessed with over the past few years, it’s lip liner. As someone with naturally thin lips, it's always been the product that makes the biggest difference to my makeup. A well-placed liner can subtly enhance the shape of my lips without looking obvious—I never wear lipstick without one (in fact, I often just wear lip liner), and if you peeked inside my makeup bag, you'd find far more lip liners than anyone reasonably needs.

One of my favourite things about makeup is experimentation, and when it comes to lip products in particular, there is so much room for creativity and customisation. Pair a cool-toned nude liner with a peachy lipstick, and you'll create something entirely different than if you teamed that same lipstick with a warm brown or rosy pink. The possibilities are almost endless, which is why I love experimenting with different combinations depending on my mood, the season, or the rest of my makeup look.

I wear the shade Rosewood, which comes up as a slightly flushed, pink hue on my cheeks, perfect for that "no makeup" makeup look. Oh, and the dewy finish is to die for.

2. Fenty Beauty Match Stix Colour Adaptive Cheek & Lip Stick

If you want a more statement makeup look, Fenty Beauty is where it's at. I love using this stick to add a real pop of colour to my cheeks or lips. It has a really cooling, almost jelly-like texture that adds a gorgeous sheen to the skin, and it features colour shift technology to create a customised rosy glow. I think I'll be reaching for this the entire summer.

3. Wonderskin pHlush Stick

Another multi-use stick I can't get enough of is the Wonderskin pHlush Stick. Less jelly-like and more creamy than the option above, this stick can be used on the lips and cheeks, although, because of the larger applicator, I personally find it easier to use as a blush. It features pH-adjusting pigment technology to deliver a custom flush to the cheeks that looks naturally beautiful every single time. What I love about this formula is that it also contains jojoba, castor, and sunflower seed oils, shea butter and niacinamide, so it makes your cheeks look so plump and juicy.

If you're after a specific lip product, let me introduce you to the HAUS Labs PhD Hybrid Lip Oil. I'm a big fan of lip oils, and this has quickly become a new favourite. The texture is perfect. Not greasy, but super hydrating with a subtle sheen. Plus, the tinted formula transforms into a custom colour when applied, creating that "your lips but better" finish that can be so hard to achieve. You've probably seen this product all over your TikTok feed, and for good reason. If my own excitement for summer in Europe is anything to go by, the European tourist board must be rubbing its hands together in delight. My mum and I have very different approaches to our beauty routines, especially when it comes to makeup. Paying attention to beauty trends on the red carpet is part and parcel of my job as a beauty editor, and it’s obvious that all of the chicest celebrity looks over awards season have had one thing in common: "blurred" lip liner. Yes, whilst you might think of lip liner as there only to sharply outline your pout and add crisp definition, this season, it’s all about taking a softer-focus approach to your makeup.

Slightly diffused and gently smudged, makeup artist Nina Park has undoubtedly been leading the charge with this blurred lip look. Known for painting the faces of everyone from Zoë Kravitz to Lily-Rose Depp, her approach to effortlessly cool "no makeup" makeup that never looks too try-hard is her trademark. And blurred lips are the epitome of walking that line of makeup that looks polished without being overly precise.

Even better, unlike with a lot of makeup trends, I feel like I actually have a shot at re-creating the look for myself at home. As someone who isn’t particularly skilled in the makeup department, the fact that blurred lips look actually wearable (and doable) and don’t require a steady hand means this is one trend I can see transitioning from the red carpet into real life with absolute ease. After all, it would look just as good with bare skin and a slick of mascara as it clearly does with a full face of glam.

What Is Blurred Lip Liner?

Characterised by a slightly fuzzy lip line, the blurred lip look is so popular right now because of how it creates the appearance of a full, volumised pout whilst still looking effortless. "It’s flattering because it works with how light naturally hits the face," explains makeup artist Emily Wood. "Instead of pushing colour inward, which can make lips look smaller, a blurred lip is all about adding depth around the lips and keeping the centre of the lips lighter, which means lips look fuller, rounder and more balanced." Wood points out that it’s not the same as overlining, either. "It’s more about following but slightly enhancing the lip line," she says.

How to Get the Look

Thankfully, the look is fairly easy to achieve, as the beauty of a blurred lip is that there's no need for total precision—in fact, we want the opposite. Wood suggests a lip liner that’s slightly deeper than your natural lip colour, a lipstick close to your lip shade and a gloss or balm if you like a sheenier finish.

"Start by lining the lips following your natural shape, and you can slightly enhance this past your natural lip line if you want more volume," Wood explains. "Then blur the liner inward using your finger or a brush so that there are no harsh lines at all." Finish by applying your chosen lip colour on the outer parts of your lips, leaving the centre quite light, then add a gloss or balm to finish. "The key to this look really is blending," says Wood.

If I'm being honest with you, I've never been much of a lipstick person. It doesn't matter if it's matte or satin finish, most of them just feel A) too fussy and "done" on my lips, and B) they're too high-maintenance to top-up throughout the day. Instead, I've always been more of a lip balm or lip gloss person. They just feel much more effortless and low-maintenance.

However, with the rise in the blurred lips trend, pioneered by makeup artists such as Nina Park, like many others, I've fallen back in love with lip products again. And alongside the makeup trend has come a new wave of sheer matte-tinted lip balms that deliver a soft-focus effect to the lips. One swipe delivers a sheer wash of colour (think just-bitten colour) with a matte finish that mimics the natural texture of your lips. Because of their blurred finish, you don't have to be precise about the application like you would with a standard lipstick. You can swipe them on without a mirror, and they gradually diffuse as they fade for a natural-looking tint throughout the day. Perfect for "no makeup" makeup.

Makeup artists have long created the effect by applying lipstick and blotting the excess off with a tissue. However, these sheer, matte-tinted lip balms create the blurred look in just one swipe. And they speak to my low-maintenance heart, bridging the gap between a traditional matte lipstick and a lip balm for a veil of colour that feels very French-coded and a way more modern way to wear lip colour. 1. Merit Beauty Signature Lip Blush

Merit Beauty's Signature Lip Blush is possibly the comfiest lipstick-balm hybrid I've tried. It feels just like a lip balm on the lips, but with a chic matte finish that drapes a sheer tint on your lips. Think of it as lip blush in a lipstick bullet. One swipe gives a soft-diffused tint, but you can easily layer it up for more intensity. My favourite shades are Bespoke (a neutral brown, which I'm wearing above) and Archival (a soft neutral pink), but there's also an array of brighter shades that are so much more wearable than their lipstick counterparts, thanks to their delightfully lightweight and sheer texture.

2. Violette_Fr Bisou Balm

You can trust a French beauty brand such as Violette_Fr to create one of the best sheer matte tinted lip balms. Founder and makeup artist Violette Serrat was inspired by the concept of "bouche mordue" for this balm, which translates as "just-bitten lips", and Bisou Balm was born. It's been a staple in my makeup bag ever since I first tried it for many reasons. Firstly, it feels just like a cushiony balm on application, and whether you apply it in one sheer swipe or layer it up, it still feels so effortless and never heavy like a lipstick would. Oh, and it also smells delightfully of French bonbons. Mon Cheri is one of my favourites for a chocolate-cherry tint, but I'm finding myself reaching for Bonbon Myrtille for a blurred raspberry lip come summer. It gives your lips a pretty flush of colour.

3. Glossier Generation G

Prefer something that's still matte but more on the hydrating side? Allow me to point you in the direction of Generation G. Balmy in texture, it glides onto the lips with the hydrating, sumptuous feeling of a lip balm and is enriched with skin-softening vitamin E. But it looks matte to the eye. The bullet delivers a translucent tint of colour, and it's also easy to build up from a sheer to a bolder intensity if you wish, all whilst having that enviable soft-focus blur. There are a lot of shades to choose from, from bright, jammy shades (such as Like, which I'm wearing above) to everyday neutrals that you'll want to reach for every day.

4. Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mellow Blur

The new Mellow Blur lipsticks have become one of my favourite new beauty launches. This formula has more of a slip on the lips when you're wearing it, so if you want something a bit more hydrating, this is a great bank account-friendly option to try. Like the others, it's layerable, but takes on a slightly more satiny finish if you're applying multiple layers, but a couple of swipes gives a subtle sheer matte tint. I like to pat the bullet onto my lips to gradually build up the colour for a just-bitten effect. My shade recommendations? Try Mochi Mauve for an everyday neutral, or brown butter for a '90s-inspired brown lip.

When it comes to award-show glamour, I drink up every detail of the looks that make our best dressed lists. Though every event plays host to a showstopping assortment of red carpet ensembles, from the stunning gowns to the trendsetting hairstyles, the stars save their best for the Oscars, and the 2026 show is shaping up to have some of the best beauty looks I've seen in a minute.

Don't get me wrong. I love a classic updo and perfectly manicured hands. However, the one thing that sets my soul on fire is red carpet makeup—so much so that I asked my fellow beauty editors to fan-cast our favorite nominees' makeup looks for the evening. The one thing we didn't see coming was the monochrome-makeup trend that suddenly yet swiftly took center stage, and I'm simply itching to re-create these looks myself. Below, see the matchy-matchy lip and eye moments from Jessie Buckley, Emma Stone, Renate Reinsve, and more that played oh so perfectly with their Oscar-worthy gowns.

Not to toot my own horn, but I did predict Buckley's red-lip look. The Best Actress nominee matched her scarlet lips to her two-toned Chanel gown, making this look an instant classic. I theorize that the vermillion accents could be a sweet nod to her character Agnes Shakespeare's signature red frock, but that's just me.

Wunmi Mosaku's deep-sea turquoise gown caught my eye immediately, but her shimmering shadow made me stay. The Sinners star matched her sparkling custom Louis Vuitton gown with a pop of reflective teal eye shadow on the inner corners of her eyes, which happens to be one of 2026's top red carpet trends, according to our senior beauty editor Jamie Schneider's robust reporting. According to Chase Infiniti's makeup artist, Amber Dreadon, the actress's custom Louis Vuitton dress was the ultimate source of inspiration. Dreadon describes the look as "whimsical, light, and effortlessly youthful," according to a press release, and kept skin and subtle pops of color at the center. She used the LV Ombres Eyeshadow Palette in Cosmic Dreams to craft Infiniti's soft lilac eye before accenting her pillowy pout with the LV Rouge Satin Lipstick in Kiss the Sky.

Do my eyes deceive me, or did Emma Stone match her shimmering, floor-sweeping Louis Vuitton gown with a frosted eye? According to a press release, the star's gown was hand-embroidered—which, by my logic, requires a makeup look with the same painstaking detail. The Bugonia star wears the LV Ombres Eyeshadow Palette in Beige Memento, which features an icy ivory shadow that I'd bet my next paycheck she slathered all over the eye.

Sinners' Li Jun Li has been taking the 2026 award season by storm with her extravagant red carpet looks, though I'm particularly entranced by her matching red moment tonight. Perhaps inspired by the fiery aesthetic of her heavily nominated film, the actress tied in her red Gaurav Gupta dress with cherry-colored glam, including bright-red lips and berry-hued blush.

Renate Reinsve has been dominating award season in the style category, but my eyes were on her red lip (and sculptural hip-high slit) tonight. Perfectly matching her custom Louis Vuitton gown is her matte LV lipstick in orange-red Vuittamine, which I'm adding to my cart as we speak.

Hailey Bieber wore a rose-brown lip with no mascara, so I wore a rose-brown lip with no mascara. That's just what happens when you catch the beauty mogul's GRWM TikTok video 10 minutes before heading to dinner without a stitch of makeup on! (I like to say I thrive under pressure.) Of course, it helps that a mauvy lip situation is my absolute fail-safe, so I already have Bieber's exact combo on my person. It also helps that her blurred, just-bitten look is very French-coded, and I'm currently in Paris, cherishing the sunny, 18-degree weather (hence the running late for dinner). After giving her three-product lineup a whirl, I now consider it a getting-ready staple. Below, see the exact items (no, they're not just from Rhode), plus my own predinner photos. You'll quickly understand why it's also become my latest go-to.

Bieber seems to be on a richer-lip kick lately. Remember her Grammys look, which consisted of a berry-brown lip with matching nails? Mary Phillips, Bieber's longtime makeup artist, traced the perimeter of her lips with M.ph's Overliner Lip Liner Pencil in Bittersweet (a burnt caramel brown), which has clearly remained within her repertoire. In Bieber's TikTok video, you can see her using that same pencil to deepen the outline of Rhode's Peptide Lip Shape. The latter creates a soft shadow, effectively contouring the lips, and the former defines the edge without losing its fluffiness. It's very Nina Park-inspired, if I may add.

Now, to blend those pigments together and create even more of a diffused finish, Bieber grabs Merit's Signature Lip Blush in Bespoke—a cool, rosy brown. She swipes it directly on her lips, no extra blending necessary, as the sheer-matte lipstick naturally has a soft-focus finish without feeling dry whatsoever. Trust me. I can attest.

Once I saw Bieber's video, I immediately scrambled to my toiletry case and fished out the three staples. Again, a rosy-brown lip is practically my makeup safety blanket, so I luckily already had all three on hand. I don't have M.ph's Bittersweet with me at the moment, so I used Skinny Dip, a cool beige. I'd say it has a similar effect, but I am itching to re-create the look with Bittersweet as soon as I get home.

Still, the pigment looked perfect underneath Merit's Bespoke Lip Blush, which blurs like a dream sans blending brush. In fact, I don't even need to press with my fingertip to achieve that romantic "just kissed" effect. Like magic, the balmy lip colour smooths out any dehydrated lip lines without disturbing that fluffy perimeter from the liners. Not to mention, the colour is divine, providing a nice contrast with my skin tone and mascara-free lashes. I'm officially making the rosy-brown Bespoke my number one pick, though honourable mention must go to Framboise, a true berry I've worn on plenty of date nights.

The best part about this lip combo, however, is that it truly gets better the longer you wear it. While each pigment is notably long-lasting—even after a couple of glasses of French wine—any extra blurring adds to the beautiful, lived-in finish. In fact, a fellow editor complimented me on my lip colour long after we had ordered, so you can catch me wearing this exact equation for the rest of the trip and well into spring. When it comes to new beauty launches, there aren't many that get me quite as excited as a Merit Beauty launch. From its minimalistic "no-makeup" makeup ethos to its heavenly skin scent, Retrospect, there's nothing not to love about the brand. And it would be remiss of me not to mention the Flush Balms, which have claimed a spot as one of our beauty team's favourite beauty products, and are a modern beauty icon in their own right.

So, when I heard last year that Merit was bringing out a new matte lipstick in 2026, my interest was instantly piqued. I've never really been a lipstick person (most are too high-maintenance for my liking, and tend to dry out my sensitive lips), but naturally, Merit has put its own less-is-more stamp on it. I've been testing the new Merit Signature Lip Blush over the past couple of weeks, and it's everything I want from a lipstick and more. The Formula

Honestly, the Signature Lip Blush feels more like a velvety lip balm than a traditional lipstick. It applies sheer, leaving lips lightly coated in a soft, matte veil of colour. But if you want to dial up the intensity, it’s easily layerable for a more statement shade. But even if you apply a generous amount, it still feels like a hydrating balm rather than a drying lipstick.

But what I love most about the Signature Lip Blush is that it delivers a blurred lip effect. Much like a makeup artist might artfully soften the edges of a lipstick to make it more modern and lived-in, this does it in one swipe. The result is soft-diffused, like your lips are naturally flushed with just-bitten colour. It also makes it low-maintenance to use. You can swipe it on comfortably (even without a mirror), and it fades evenly, so you don’t have to worry about meticulously topping it up. I appreciate that these are hydrating on my dry lips, too, thanks to sesame seed oil.

The Shades

As for the shade range, there’s really something for everyone’s tastes, from muted neutrals to understated pinks and statement reds. However, the sheerness of the formula means wearing a brighter colour is far less intimidating than wearing an opaque satin or matte lipstick. I like to gently pat the bullet onto my lips for a hint of colour, or swipe it on to get more pigment payoff, which is still beautifully blurred and soft. That being said, I am a neutral girl, and so I’ve most drawn to Archival (a muted pink) and Bespoke (a pinky-brown, which is also my favourite shade of the Flush Balms). Both bestow a sheer veil of colour that softly defines the lips. It doesn’t look like you’re wearing anything. It’s like your lips are naturally flushed with colour.

My Verdict

Since first trying them, the Signature Lip Blush has become a staple part of my makeup bag. As someone who doesn’t like wearing traditional lipstick (which always feels too fussy), this feels like a more modern way to wear colour, with the big plus of it being low-maintenance to wear and reapply. They feel velvety on the lips, offering cushion-like hydration that manages to keep my always-parched lips feeling moisturised and supple. Both the Bespoke and Archival shades live permanently in my handbag and makeup bag. And in my opinion, that’s a testament to just how good they are.

In an ideal world, I wouldn’t wear makeup at all. I love the idea of bare skin, freckles on show, and a face that looks exactly like it does first thing in the morning—just perhaps after a really good night’s sleep and a litre of water. How to Choose Natural-Looking Makeup Products:

Choosing natural-looking makeup starts with understanding your own skin and letting that guide every decision. Coverage should be flexible, not fixed—look for sheer-to-light formulas that can be built only where you need them, rather than products that mask the entire face. Anything described as “skin-like,” “second skin,” or “blurring” is usually a good place to start, especially if it comes in cream or tint form.

Shade selection matters more than you might think. With blusher, bronzer, and highlighter, opt for tones that already exist in your face—whether that be soft pinks, muted peaches, or gentle browns—and choose subtle sheen finishes rather than full-on sparkle.

Texture is just as important as colour. Natural makeup should melt, blend, and move with your skin. If a product dries too quickly, feels tight, or sits on top of pores, it will always look like makeup. Creams, liquids, and finely milled powders tend to be the most forgiving, especially when applied with fingers or a soft brush.

As a beauty editor who doesn't love wearing lipstick, I'm always in search of creating the perfect blurred lip. Violette_FR Bisou Balm

Created by Violette_FR founder and French makeup artist, Violette Serrat, Bisou Balm was inspired by the "'bouche mordue" look, which in French translates as "just-bitten lips". With its sheer finish and matte texture, it adds a blurred tint to the lips in one swipe. You don't need to have the skill and artistry of a makeup artist to create a blurred lip. Bisou Balm creates it in seconds.

The Finish

As you can see, Bisou Balm applies sheer yet matte. It feels similar to a lip balm on—it's actually quite moisturising—but has a velvety texture that mimics the natural texture of your lips. One swipe gives a subtle flush, but it can be layered up for a bolder intensity with another layer.

I'm wearing the shade Mon Chéri above, a warm brown-red inspired by chocolate-coated cherries, but all the shades are equally stunning, and there's something for everyone. What's great is that because they're all so sheer, even the brighter red and pink tones instantly become wearable and add such a pretty flush to the lips.

The Shades

I've tried a handful of the shades, and they all share that same sheer yet blurred effect and are all inspired by traditional French confectionery (they all have a delicious sweet scent).

I'm wearing Mon Chéri in the above photo, which is a great warm brown that's perfect for winter. However, during the warmer months, I find myself reaching more for Bonbon Myrtille, a jammy berry tone that allows me to wear a brighter colour without it feeling quite so full on as an opaque lipstick.

The Verdict

As you can probably guess, I'm absolutely smitten with Bisou Balm. It's one of my most-worn lip products, and you'll always find one in my bag. Not only does it give me a French-girl-inspired pout with just one swipe of the bullet, but I adore the balm texture that hydrates my lips and never leaves them feeling dry. To look at me now, you may think that bright lipsticks were not my thing. A staunch member of the nude lip club on a daily basis, I usually choose from a tight rotation of Charlotte Tilbury’s Very Victoria, the most perfect browny nude in my opinion, MAC’s Velvet Teddy, slightly warmer with peach undertones, and Fenty’s Gloss Bomb in Sp’Ice Cold, for a little added shine.

While now I’m very much a creature of habit, there was once a time when nude was the farthest thing from my lips. Instead, it was statement reds, rich berries and pops of pink that I gravitated towards.

So, when at Chloé’s SS26 show, makeup artist Yadim Carranza sent models down the runway with fresh, natural skin, a swipe of highlighter and a statement bubblegum pink lip, the nostalgia came at me fast. Instantly, I found myself wanting to pull out my favourite pink lipsticks and get to swiping them once again.

To create Chloe’s candy pink hue, Carranza turned to a brand not usually known for their bold shades, Saie. Starting with the Slip Tint Tinted Moisturiser and concealer, to create an even base, he then followed with Saie's Dew Blush in Baby for a bold matte pink lip that contrasted against the nude looks below.

Yet, while Carranza’s take on the pink lip may have felt unexpected, the pink lip's revival is actually a little less surprising. In recent months, we’ve seen celebs like Lindsay Lohan forgo nude in favour of pastel pink tones, while Selena Gomez opted for a rosy pink combo for her wedding-day glam.

Plus, as if that isn’t proof enough that it’s time to treat yourself to a new pink lipstick, I spoke to makeup artist Lielle Neury, to get her take on the trend…

Is Pink Lipstick Trending?

“I’ve definitely noticed the return of pink lipstick,” said Neury when I quizzed her on the topic, “People are realising just how much a pink lip can make a look pop, even with a natural makeup style. It ties everything together and brings light back into the face.”

What’s the Best Way to Apply Pink Lipstick?

“When it comes to application, I like to pair pink lipstick with a lip liner close to my natural lip colour for a softer, everyday look,” Neury told me, “For something a little bolder or more glam, try a liner that’s two shades darker. I usually apply pink lipstick by tapping it on with my finger for a diffused finish (more subtle but with a pop) or with a lip brush for a more precise and polished”

Does Pink Lipstick Suit All Skin Tones?

“Pink lipstick is so versatile and works beautifully across all skin tones,” Neury explains. “I do think it’s also about understanding your undertone when choosing the right shade. To determine your undertone, look at the colour of your veins. Blue or purple veins usually mean cooler undertones, while green veins suggest warmer undertones. A mix of both means you’re neutral. [When choosing a shade of pink lipstick] If you have cooler undertones, go for a blue-based pink. If your skin is warmer, a coral or peachy pink will really flatter you.”

How Do I Stop Pink Lipstick From Making My Teeth Look Yellow?

While I love a pink lipstick, one downside is that it can emphasise yellow tones in your teeth. To avoid this, you need to check the undertones of the colour. Shades with cool blue or violet bases, such as berry pinks and magentas, tend to make teeth appear whiter by counteracting yellow enamel. We've already rounded up the biggest autumn beauty trends as a whole, but, for the last few weeks, I've been busy collating information on the best new beauty launches, TikTok trends, Instagram aesthetics and more to help define the biggest autumn makeup trends of the season. I even reached out to Jess Hunt, creative director and co-founder of one of my favourite beauty brands, REFY, to get an expert's opinion on upcoming makeup looks.

Below, I've rounded up five standout shifts that we can expect to see in the makeup world as summer draws to a close. From new mascara looks to statement lipsticks and the surprising trend that's replacing blusher altogether this season, keep on scrolling to find out more.

1. Lively Lashes

As a beauty editor, I already know that this autumn will see a huge focus on statement lashes. Forget classic black mascaras, as this season is all about warm brown and burgundy tones. "As we move into A/W, I can see brown lashes having a moment, adds Hunt.

Not only do these mascaras add a pop of colour to your makeup look, but they can also help to enhance your eye colour and make your eyes pop. The best bit? So many brands have caught onto this trend and are releasing their iconic formulas in fun new shades. Shop some of my favourites below.

2. Bitten Berry Lips

The French girl "bitten lip" aesthetic is all the rage right now, and I do not doubt that this trend will continue into the autumn months. This softer, more smudged effect makes it appear as if you've just bitten into a juicy cherry or ripe strawberry, giving your makeup look that effortlessly chic finish.

However, as Hunt tells me, the new season will see a shift from lighter lipsticks to warm, rich shades. "Deep berries and wines will be everywhere. Paired with minimal blush or bronzer, the main focus will be on the lips and luminous skin," she says.

3. Bronzer Is the New Blush

Blush has been trending for quite some time, but according to Hunt, this autumn it's all about bronzer. "Bronzer will take over where blush usually sits, giving subtle warmth and structure to the skin without the need for extra colour on the cheeks."

Not only will this trend help to streamline your makeup routine, but it will also enable you to prolong that summer glow as we enter the colder months. Whether you prefer a cream formula or a classic bronzing powder, there are lots of ways to achieve this look.

4. Secret Shimmer

I know what you're thinking: isn't autumn a bit early for shimmery makeup looks? Well, this season, there's a more subtle way to incorporate the trend. Hunt tells me we can expect to see small touches of bronze, gold and silver in our autumn makeup looks, such as metallic accents on the cupid’s bow for that delicate yet striking finish.

"I absolutely love this trend and will definitely be trying it," she adds. "It's a fun way to elevate your makeup without going over the top."

5. Down to Earth

Last, but by no means least, this autumn is all about earthy tones. "Warm shades like terracotta, burnt bronze and deep browns will be hugely popular across fashion and beauty this A/W," Hunt says.

Whether it's an earth-toned smoky eye look, a terracotta blush or a bronze lip gloss, there are so many ways to make this trend work for you. My wardrobe is already filled with these autumn hues, so I can't wait to match my makeup to my outfit.

I've made peace with the fact that I'm not a lipstick person. In fact, as a beauty editor who tests makeup for a living, I couldn't help but notice that my lipsticks have taken a backseat, making way for hybrid formulas that combine pigment with comfort for a softer, more natural touch.

Instead of bolder, more saturated pigment, they offer a subtle wash of colour and a featherlight feel—the kind that lets you forget you're wearing anything on your lips in the first place.

Be it a lip balm that blurs the line between skincare and makeup, a chic lip stain to help create that romcom-esque "just bitten" look, a good ol' tinted lip gloss for a juicy pout or even a few dabs of your favourite cream blusher, lipstick alternatives make great everyday staples—striking that perfect balance between polished and effortless.

After years of trial and error, I'm proud to say that I've got my lip products down to a T. And in the spirit of putting a stop to gatekeeping our lip combos, I'm here to share my ride-or-die formulas—the ones that never fail to earn me the biggest compliments. So, lipstick loyalists, look away… because these formulas might just convince you to bite the bullet (excuse the pun) and go for something else entirely.

1. Tinted Lip Balms

There's no denying that lip balms are a category that keeps on giving. Nourishing and cocooning, they pack just the right amount of pigment to instantly revive your lips with a subtle wash of colour. Whether they're ultra glossy or blurring, they're a great lipstick alternative if your goal is to achieve the ultimate "your lips but better" look.

2. Cream Blushers

Sure, a blusher may not be your first choice to slather on the lips. After all, it's a less conventional product that's designed for the cheeks. However, there's a reason why most formulas we know and love also double as a lip product.

If you think about it, most cream blushers are incredibly dewy, blurring and hydrating, all of which make naturally welcome traits in a lip-oriented product. Not to mention, using the same blush on the lips will also make the look appear more cohesive, and by extension, more intentional, making it a great finishing touch to tie everything together.

3. Lip Stains

Unlike lipsticks (which can easily disappear after devouring a bowl of pasta), lip stains excel at delivering longevity. Lucky for us, they're nothing like the drying or patchy formulas of the past. Rather, today's improved formulas are nothing of the sort. Think: juicy, lasting pigment without sacrificing the hydration.

4. Lip Glosses & Lip Oils

Gone are the days of lip glosses being tacky, sticky formulas that result in congealed hair. In 2025, lip gloss formulas are sleek, balmy and deeply nourishing. Beyond that, they're don't have the same sticky nature, but possess even glassier finishes. They are, in my opinion, up there with the most low-maintenance lipstick alternatives.

5. Lip Liners

Full disclosure: not every lip liner will be a good substitute for a lipstick. Since most are formulated with longevity in mind, you'll often find that they can be too drying on the lips. That said, there are definitely a few formulas that glide on like a dream, offering a soft-focused outline and a more natural-looking pigment.

It doesn’t take an expert to tell you that as we age, our skin changes. From changes around the eyes to reduced collagen, depleted moisture levels, and sun damage (wear your SPF, people), ageing affects not only how our skin looks but also how it feels. This, however, is not something to be evaded but embraced, and all it takes is a little know-how. With that in mind, I thought we'd focus on a subject that isn't often talked about and that people don't often think about: the best lipsticks for mature skin.

As we get older, it can be beneficial to slightly adapt our beauty routines to suit the skin's changing needs. A nourishing skincare routine suited to mature skin is a great place to start; as any makeup lover knows, the right prep will set you up for any products that follow. If you choose to wear foundation, opting for a formula tailored to mature skin will also be beneficial, as it'll ensure your base feels adequately hydrated and should ensure the product sits on the skin's surface just right. So why not give the same consideration to your lipstick?

Like the rest of our skin, lips can show signs of ageing, too. "As we age, our lips naturally lose volume, moisture and definition," explains Aarti Pal, pro-artist and founder of South Asian Beauty Collective, as I quiz her on these changes. "This can cause lipstick to bleed, fade unevenly or accentuate any dryness."

So, what to look for in a lipstick for mature skin? Pal has some great advice. "The ideal lipstick for mature lips is hydrating, smooth and comfortable. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, nourishing oils and balmy textures are game-changers," she says. "Avoid overly matte or drying formulas, which can settle into fine lines."

However, don't allow this to limit you. As with makeup in general, there are no hard and fast rules you must adhere to; the key is to wear what feels most comfortable for you. "As we age, our lips naturally lose volume, moisture and definition," says Pal, "Fine lines can form around the mouth, and the lip border often becomes less pronounced. This can cause lipstick to bleed, fade unevenly or accentuate dryness. What once felt like a 'go-to' lipstick might suddenly feel flat or uncomfortable, so choosing the right texture and prep becomes key."

"The ideal lipstick for mature lips is hydrating, smooth and comfortable to wear," says Pal. "Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, nourishing oils and balmy textures are game-changers. Avoid overly matte or drying formulas, which can settle into fine lines."

How to Apply Lipstick on Mature Skin

"I always recommend starting with a hydrating balm and gently exfoliating if needed," says Pal. "Then, use a creamy lip liner to subtly reshape and define the lips, especially around the cupid’s bow and outer corners. Apply your lipstick with a brush for precision, blot and reapply for longer wear. A dab of gloss or a creamy highlighter in the centre can help create a fuller effect without looking overdone."
