Lily-Rose Depp and Dua Lipa were among the first to champion the look at the Chanel Haute Couture show. With party season well within sight, I've been working on curating the perfect party wear wardrobe. Inspired by the fresh trends that have been populating my timeline, I'm looking to the celebrities to wrap my head around the styles that I can really see working for me this winter.

Although London isn't a formal city, its inhabitants are apt at putting a polished twist on their daily looks—often favouring comfortable silhouettes composed of chic staples, and this season so many of those elegant looks have revolved around sleek leather loafers.

Styling the chicest slip-on flat on the market right now, Depp opted for a pair of glossy black loafers for her in-transit look, adding white socks for comfort and, let's face it, to look trend-led. Let's take a moment for Sarah Jessica Parker, who committed herself to the pedal-pushers and heels look throughout the 2000s— one of the best references of the trend in its original form. Still, it's high time it was treated to a 2024 makeover. I've spotted chic New Yorker Ruby Lyn (pictured below) styling a strikingly similar combination to that of Depp's (and Parker's), only she's chosen to weave in 2024's trending olive green colour, making her ensemble feel more current in the process.

There's no doubt that this is a look that will divide opinion, but I happen to think it has clout. It's fun, and I'd argue surprisingly versatile. Take the shorts, for example; elevate them with jewels and a blazer alongside some slingbacks or kitten heels like Depp, or dress them down with a bomber jacket, a hoodie and trainers. They work much like skinny jeans would in your wardrobe—only shorter, of course—so anything you'd consider wearing with slim-fit trousers will likely work with these too.

It's true that Cannes is all about the high-octane glamour of the red carpet, but for me, it's the little laid-back Croisette moments in-between the nightly premieres that provide the best fashion inspiration for real life. Whether jetting into Nice airport like a seasoned traveller (Laura Harrier is this season's queen of the casual Cannes looks) or hopping aboard a yacht in the optimum Riviera ensemble, these are the celebrity looks that can actually have an impact on how you rework your own summer wardrobe or pack your next holiday suitcase. 

One good example in the last day of events comes from French It girl and Chanel favourite, Lily-Rose Depp. Wearing a clean, minimalistic combination of a black fit-and-flare micro-mini dress and low-heeled slingback sandals, this was the ultimate lesson in not only less-is-more but that short hemlines really do work best with a mid-height shoe. Flats can feel challenging with a lot of leg on show, and high heels can, conversely, feel a bit OTT. This is a shoe style that basically originates from Paris—Chanel first introduced these classic slingbacks in 1957—and has remained a firm favourite amongst French fashion editors, stylists and influencers ever since. They wear them with everything from jeans and wide-leg trousers to shorts and every dress length. The demure nature of these pumps can soften the most daring of looks (note the low neckline here to boot), and add an elegant spin to off-duty outfits too.

The much-anticipated BAFTAs red carpet is underway, and, as to be expected, we're seeing A-lister after A-lister arriving at the event in showstopping statement gowns. One such star is Lily-Rose Depp, who just made her first-ever BAFTAs appearance. For the award ceremony, the 20-year-old stepped out in a sheer black lace gown featuring a transparent black overlay and lace tights.

She's one of Chanel's youngest global ambassadors, so it comes as no surprise that this look was created by the French fashion house. In fact, this statement gown just debuted on the Chanel Métiers d’Art runway show this past December, designed by Virginie Viard and modelled by industry favourite Lineisy Montero.
