It’s hard to pinpoint the exact essence that makes French women so chic. So much so that there’s even a phrase—je ne sais quoi—to describe their ineffable qualities, acute charm and apparent effortlessness. Still, all that’s really clear is the second you see one out, be it swanning through vintage boutique-clad streets of Le Marais or strolling along the beachside alcoves in Marseille, you’re instantly drawn to whatever ensemble they have on.

Someone who knows this all too well is Lily Collins. After all, the actress has spent the past six years portraying the titular role in Netflix’s chart-topping series, Emily in Paris, so it should come as no surprise that her wardrobe rivals the refined and polished denizens she's on her commute to work, rather than the confusing and maximalist ensembles of her on-screen counterpart.

Earlier this week, Collins stepped out for a casual outing in the capital’s ritzy Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhood, proving how immersing yourself in a specific location will ultimately influence your personal style. Though Collins has always been quite the gamine and sophisticated dresser—which are attributes that make her ideal to play Audrey Hepburn in the upcoming Breakfast at Tiffany’s biopic—this ensemble felt quintessentially Parisian.

For the occasion, she and her husband, American director and screenwriter Charlie McDowell, grabbed coffee at Ralph Lauren’s famed cafe outpost. Cutting an incredibly low profile, she wore a pair of capri leggings with a pair of black elastic-strap white ballet flats from Margaux. Keeping things incredibly understated, she opted for a gingham shirt and oversized blouson jacket.

This is a silhouette that she’s been extremely loyal to lately, wearing a near-identical pair of leggings with a rusted orange cardigan, white slingback heels and leather jacket to the French Open at Stade Roland Garros. To those in the know, you’ll be aware that this look strikes the perfect balance of masculin-féminin, which is a French fashion signature that mixes structured tailoring with delicate sensuality.

Having expensive taste is both a blessing and a curse, but it's a blessing when it comes to trainers. Having spent a great deal of time in fashion's inner circle, it never surprises me to spot actor Lily Collins out in the city styling a blossoming trend. Perhaps it's her close relationship with some of the industry's most in-demand stylists, or maybe it's her many years spent amongst A-listers honing her dressing skills, but in my opinion, her eye for a great buy only gets stronger.

Stepping out in New York this week, Collins crafted what I can only describe as the perfect autumn outfit. Ticking off some major colour, fabric and styling trends, her laid-back look reminded me that she landed the role of Emily Cooper in Emily in Paris for a reason. Breaking the outdated styling rule that black and brown shouldn't be paired together, Collins plucked a pair of brown, wide-leg trousers to style with a structured leather blazer.

Taking off within fashion crowds this season, the brown-trouser trend offers a softer alternative to the black pairs we normally reach for at this time of year whilst injecting warmth and an expensive-looking energy into an outfit—all without overwhelming or dominating the look.

Don't tell Emily Cooper, but I just spotted Lily Collins out wearing a trouser and shoe combination that she would never, ever want to be seen in. Packing away her character's extraverted ensembles, the Collins crafted a laidback look that's much more akin to the outfits I wear myself on the daily.

There was a time in the not so distant past where your brows needed to be filled in, perfectly arched, and blocky in order to prove that you were clued up on the latest eyebrow trends. Bold brows, in general, were everywhere, with multi-step brow routines inspiring a boom in the creation of brow pomades, gels, pencils, and powders.

However, in recent years, makeup trends in general have evolved towards a ‘less is more’, natural-looking approach. Eyebrow trends have followed suit, with fluffy, brushed-up (verging on unruly) brows dominating on both the catwalks and our Instagram feeds. "I’ve definitely been using less in my brows and I know my clients have too,” says makeup artist and brow specialist Lucy Hart. "Brows are definitely a lot softer compared to previous years and I think for 2023, fluffy, natural brows are here to stay.” 

As far as experimentation goes, Hart predicts that bleached brows and the return of the skinny ‘90s brows are set to become a lot more mainstream in 2023. "Either way, brows are now all about looking low maintenance (even if they’re not) and not too ‘put together’,” she adds. "There’s an anything goes approach these days which means you can embrace your natural eyebrows and work with what you’ve got or what you know suits you, rather than committing to a cookie cutter trend like the ‘Instagram brow’.”

1. Bleached Brows

While it’s bold in its own way, bleaching your brows is about as much of a backlash to the over-filled, stand-out brow trend of yesteryear as it’s possible to be, and celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Julia Fox, and Lady Gaga have already embraced the trend, which is a sure sign that it’s set to be huge in 2023. 

"Most people will be surprised by how good bleached brows actually look, but I would recommend experimenting with this look before taking the plunge,” says Hart. "There are already brands releasing products for this look and I expect we will see more launch throughout the year.”

2. Skinny '90s Brows

Skinny brows have made a remarkable comeback, but again, it’s not surprising given that this trend contrasts so much with brow looks that are now considered to be ‘out’. It also makes sense, given we’re seeing the resurgence of so many other Y2K trends from the 2000s, like glossy lips and French tip manicures.

"On a personal level, it’s a no from me, but I can see how they are making a comeback,” says Hart. "I would just warn people to be careful as brows make a face, and once you’ve plucked your brows thin, it’s hard to get them back.” That said, we’ve already seen icons like Rihanna, Alexa Demie, and Bella Hadid nail this trend. "The modern way to pull off this look is to follow your natural brow shape rather than making them too arched,” adds Hart.

3. Laminated Brows

Laminated brows are here to stay. The innovative technique is basically the eyebrow equivalent of a lash lift or perm. Brow hairs are relaxed and straightened then brushed up and set into place, resulting in a full and fluffy effect that lasts for about two months. "This is such a low maintenance treatment because once you’ve had it done, most people don’t even end up using any products in between bookings,” says Hart. "People often get scared by a brow lamination but I assure them they won’t be stuck to their head, and it’s possible to adapt the result to suit each individual.”

It’s also easy to achieve this look using makeup. Rather than using pencils and powders to fill in brows, instead look to more malleable formulas like gels and pomades, which allow you to sculpt hairs into the desired shape. The key is to ensure hairs look separated, so brows appear fluffy rather than blocky.

4. Straight Brows

When it comes to the trending brow shapes for 2023, Hart has already noticed an increase in clients asking for straighter brows. "Lily Collins is always the reference with this look,” she says. "She have very strong, straight brows which don’t really angle until the very end.”

If your brows aren’t naturally straight, it is still possible to create the illusion of straighter brows. First of all, don’t emphasise the arch. Instead, Hart advises using product (a fine-tipped pencil or powder works best) to fill in the arch from beneath the brow. Essentially, you want to extend the natural shape of the bottom of your brow in a straight line until it meets where you brow angles downwards.

5. No-Maintenance Brows

This is the category I (firmly) sit in. Ever since the pandemic put a stop to my bi-monthly threading appointments I’ve taken a much more low maintenance approach to my brows. I no longer care if they’re looking overly thick and instead I’ve learned to embrace their natural shape—enhanced with just a touch of clear brow gel, and I’ve started using brow serums to address the gaps in them that I used to fill in with pencil. "People are focusing more on using brow treatments that they can maintain their brows with rather than layering loads of products on,” says Hart. "I myself have super full brows so applying thick product is just not needed,” she adds. 

If you’re not yet ready to step away from your brow routine, just take a softer approach. "Try a skinny brow pencil if you’re into more definition but apply it super soft on the skin so you can build it gradually,” says Hart. "I’ll still sometimes use pomade for my clients but the tiniest bit ever on an angled brush to create hair-like strokes, and you can always use a spoolie to remove any access product.”

While a huge swathe of the fashion population has spent the winter season in chunky boots or retro-look sneakers, and with some celebrities already placing bets of the ballet flats comeback for 2023, it's been left to Lily Collins to continue to fly the flag for high heels. During her recent promo events to highlight the arrival of the third season of Emily in Paris, Collins and her styling duo Mariel Haenn and Rob Zangardi—a pair known for providing some of the most "wow" ensembles for the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefani—have held steadfast in their dedication to ultra-glam looks that would be worthy of Emily's high octane Parisian wardrobe. There are only a few things I know to be undeniably true. First, the best hair days tend to happen when you have no plans and you're not going to be leaving the house (naturally). Second, a breakout is sure to appear on the eve of a big event, like a birthday, job interview, graduation, or wedding (it's just the way it is). Third, French-girl beauty will never go out of style (this is an absolute).

According to Tatum Neill, Creative Director of Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute, "Birkin Bangs are a soft version of a full framed fringe that dates back to '60s fashion icon Jane Birkin. They have a square shape to them much like the Hermès Birkin Bag but they do not read as geometric and blunt." 

He recommends bringing photos to the salon so you get the exact result you desire. "The best way to ensure you get the right look is to come with photos and an idea of where you want them to sit. They can be placed below, at, or above the eyebrow and should extend beyond the eyes and open up your face. Be sure to discuss your hair texture and growth patterns to ensure that they sit right and don't pop up too much when you style at home. The bangs should be cut with a little disheveled precession so they maintain a square shape but feel soft and piecey."

Getting the right cut is half the battle. Styling them is the other half. Luckily, Neill has some advice for that, too. Start with clean, damp hair and blow dry your bangs with a small paddle brush or a fine-tooth comb. "You want to follow your brush or comb with your blow-dryer with a back-and-forth movement so the hair doesn't part in any particular direction," he explains. "Once dry you can use a lightweight hair spray like Aveda's Air Control (£24) to piece some of the ends together to give it that effortless French look." Easy, right?

The first thing I notice about Lily Collins is that she’s cut her chestnut locks into a thick fringe. While it covers enough of her forehead to obscure her famously fluffy brows, the fresh look somehow feels remarkably fitting. It’s so fitting, in fact, that the moment when Emily in Paris costume designer Marylin Fitoussi laid eyes on it, she declared, "Oh, now I know where we’re going in season three for your character.” Emily Cooper wouldn’t exist without Lily Collins, but it’s Emily who gives us a glimpse into Collins’s most charismatic real-life qualities too. As showrunner Darren Star aptly put it, the success of a series like Emily in Paris stands on the shoulders of a single person. Enter Collins.

"Work is so much a part of who I am,” effuses a bubbly Collins. Of all the qualities they share, there’s one major resemblance that the actress bears to her starring character in Netflix’s smash-hit comedy series, and it’s the fact that they’re both exceptionally self-assured. "And I’m very much like my character [Emily]. I love what I do,” she continues. "I’m unapologetically work driven. But I’m also unapologetically life driven.” Just like it’s hard not to fall in love with the bright, bold, and eternally optimistic Emily—despite the bumps in her fish-out-of-water experience as an American living in France—it’s hard not to fall under the intoxicating spell of Collins. You see, the Emmy-nominated actress, budding producer, and Time100 Next recipient possesses a lightheartedness that’s impossible to ignore.

When we connected over Zoom last month, her image appeared across my screen, and she was fresh-faced and clad in a simple crew-neck sweater. She was perched in the middle of a bed in the guest room of her Los Angeles home, a carefully chosen spot where there would be minimal noise since our conversation was also being recorded for the Who What Wear podcast. It’s that kind of thoughtfulness that makes Collins, well, Collins. Indeed, as soon as I brought up our cover shoot, she eagerly recounted the details of the day, insisting that she relished the chance to experiment with the grungier hair, makeup, and styling, which are—let’s be honest—a sharp departure from Collins’s more polished preferences. It’s at this moment that I get the sense that, when she shows up for something, she really shows up. Nothing is half-baked in the world of Lily Collins.

Over the course of our hour-and-a-half-long conversation, I come to learn that there’s no topic too light or too deep for Collins, and the range of what we covered is a testament to that. No matter what we discussed—be it the polarized reception of Emily in Paris, her mix-breed rescue Redford, or the importance of going to therapy—Collins brought a certain levity to all subject matter. They say that how you do anything is how you do everything, and I’m beginning to get the idea that Collins does everything with curiosity and openness. 

Despite being born in the English countryside to performer Phil Collins and Jill Tavelman, Collins spent most of her formative years in Los Angeles, where she went on to earn a degree in journalism from USC. As a teenager, Collins wrote a column, NY Confidential, for the British magazine Elle Girl. She has also written for Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and the Los Angeles Times. Although writing was one of her first creative outlets, Collins has never been a stranger to the camera—her first on-screen credit coming at the age of 2 for the BBC series Growing Pains. But it wasn’t until age 20 that Collins landed her breakout role in 2009’s The Blind Side, and she went on to star in audience favorites such as Mirror Mirror (2012), Love, Rosie (2014), and Rules Don’t Apply (2016), the latter of which earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Despite the many noteworthy roles under Collins’s belt, there’s no denying that playing Emily in Emily in Paris is the thing that has propelled the career actress to a new level of fame. Before the Netflix series, you may have known her for one of her many previous projects or perhaps simply for her consistently dazzling ensembles that have been a staple on red carpets for over a decade, but regardless, the name Lily Collins has officially reached household status.

The Emmy-winning show is irresistible in its sweetness and intoxicating in its optimism. The outfits alone, for which iconic Sex and the City wardrober Patricia Field was a consultant, are a feast for the eyes. In a single day, Emily might change three or four times, rotating between a series of looks that are highly colour coordinated, rarely practical, and always finished off with towering heels and the latest It bag. "It’s a suspension of disbelief,” Collins says, speaking to some of the unrealistic elements that critics have been shouting about since the first season aired in 2020. It’s that total investment in the story line that separates the Emily in Paris lovers from the haters. "We want to have the fashion be the fashion. And maybe she has a storage unit somewhere,” she jokes.

But in all seriousness, Collins seems to have an answer to the many criticisms the show faces. She tells me that from the get-go the aim was always to further explore French culture and the French language and infuse new ideas as the show progressed and received the green light for more seasons. "You only get to do a certain amount in season one,” she explains. "So when the show comes out and you have criticism/feedback, it’s an opportunity if you get to go to a season two to take note of what people thought, what their opinions were, what mattered to people, and what people were concerned about. That’s the beauty of listening to an audience and seeing what matters to people.” There it is, the infectious optimism of Collins.

Just like its influencer heroine, Emily in Paris just keeps capturing attention. While the internet had a lot to say about the 2021 nominations, the comedy nonetheless prevailed during the award season, garnering two Golden Globe nominations and two from the Emmys. It’s a testament to just how much the show has captured the hearts of its audience. Although Collins and the rest of the production never could have anticipated the global events of 2020, the arrival of the series to our Netflix queues late that year serendipitously came at a time when we most needed to take a mental break from the bleakness of the moment and dive into its super-sweet fantasy.

At the time of our chat, Collins was preparing to embark on a press tour for the show’s third season. While Emily in Paris may be the focus now, she’s admittedly never one to sit still and is already working to establish another title for herself: producer. The transition into producing has become somewhat of a Hollywood default for actors with a certain level of seniority. After all, it makes sense that after years of interpreting other people’s stories you’d want to have more agency to tell your own, too. Collins retains all the passion of an acting veteran turned producer, but refreshingly, her approach to this next chapter is devoid of ego. "I don’t need to be the one telling these stories all the time,” she insists. "I want to empower others to be the face in front of the camera. If it’s not right for me, it’s right for somebody else.” Whether or not she’s the one in front of the camera, Collins feels that producing has "always been a natural fit.”

In fact, her entire demeanor visibly shifts when I bring up the topic. A relatively new venture for her, Collins attached producer to her credits on Emily in Paris, beginning in the second season, as well as the 2022 Netflix drama Windfall, directed by Collins’s husband, Charlie McDowell. But based on our conversation, the two titles are only the beginning. After the film proved to McDowell and Collins just how well their relationship can work in a professional setting, Collins told me the two have been full speed ahead on their creative collaborations. I joke that their dinner-table conversions must be one big brainstorm. She confirms, "Some of the most exciting creative conversations I’ve had in the last six months—if not even three weeks—have been about things that I’m behind the camera on.” Talk about passion projects.

If Emily in Paris is over-the-top in its production, set, and wardrobe, then Windfall is its antithesis. A true COVID project, the dark drama features a cast of just four, was shot at a single location, and writes Collins into a role that is everything Emily Cooper is not. Her character wears one rather plain outfit throughout the film—just jeans and flats—and doesn’t even have a name. The film sees her character, simply referred to as "wife,” slowly unraveling mentally, and the irony was that Collins and McDowell were literally planning their wedding, picking out flowers and everything, in between takes. "He’d always be like, ‘Well, at least now I can see the furthest that you can go and what you’re like when you’re really mad.’ I was like, ‘I’m getting it out now,’” she says. But in all seriousness, experimenting with a diversity of roles isn’t just fun for Collins. She says it’s creatively necessary. "I’ve always wanted to bop in and out of different genres never to be put in a box, especially playing a character like Emily where I get to do it season after season (and hopefully for more seasons to come),” she explains. "But she’s a very specific character, and I need to creatively step outside that and play something very different.”

Light and dark. Optimist and realist. These aren’t just the dualities that define Collins’s current acting gigs. They expose the depth of her real-life emotional landscape too. Just beyond her bubbly exterior lies a version of Collins that’s actively healing by confronting her darkness. Her 2017 memoir titled Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me explores her battles with mental health, including the eating disorder she suffered as a teenager. It’s something she now sees as a source of hope and self-healing: "The more I opened up and talked about my past struggles, the more I can relate and connect to people, connect with myself, and further my journey.” It was that same year that she did To the Bone, a film that explores eating disorders, which she says was positive for herself as well as the audiences that saw their own struggles and experiences in it. "And then I do something like Emily [in Paris], where you can heal through laughter at a time when the world needed to remember what joy felt like or laughter felt like or travel felt like. And as I do that for audiences, I’m also doing it for myself,” she says. There she goes injecting that signature levity into the topic.

Collins is loudly outspoken about her mental health journey, and her willingness to be open about her struggles is a bright light in a spot of darkness that many young people, and really anybody, may face. Whether it’s going to therapy (which she’s a big proponent of), getting it out on the page ("I journal every day in the morning and at night. I love the Five Minute Journal”), or channeling it into her acting work, Collins insists that "art is healing, whether it makes you cry or makes you laugh.” 

It’s with that last remark that my image of Lily Collins starts to solidify. As she slips into the driver’s seat of her Hollywood career to make us laugh or cry or contemplate, we can all benefit from Collins and her unapologetic optimism.

If three of your favorite F-words are fun, French, and fashion, then you're probably already counting down the days until the season-three premiere of Emily in Paris—only 12 remain until Lily Collins and the amiable albeit occasionally aloof cast of characters magically appear on Netflix on December 21.

Creator Darren Star has a flair for the dramatic, so while we're not sure what that means for Emily's relationship and career, we're pleased to see that the costumes continue to be next-level. Marylin Fitoussi remains at the helm of the costume-and-wardrobe department, delighting viewers with Emily's occasionally avant-garde (or perhaps just overly American) style, showcasing vibrant colors and punchy patterns mixed in with classic "French-girl" style as seen on supporting characters.

I don't know about you, but I love the start of a new season, particularly the start of autumn/winter. As the leaves turn to fiery orange, and we swap our summer footwear for winter boots, I can't help but get swept up in that back-to-school feeling, pulling out my trusted knitwear and adding some new A/W trends to my wardrobe. Same for you? If so, it's only natural that we're also keen to update our hair as the seasons shift. While in summer, we might opt for lighter, golden hair colour such as balayage, in autumn and winter, it can be fun to embrace those warmer auburn and brunette shades. Nothing gives that back-to-school feeling like a brand-new haircut, and a big chop is a fail-safe for ridding hair of any split ends and faded colour from summertime.

The Autumn/Winter 2022 Hair Trends That Really Matter

1. Luxurious Copper

As soon as we saw Zendaya step out with this bouncy blowout and beautiful copper-brunette hair colour, we immediately pinned it down as one of the top autumn/winter 2022 hair trends to watch. "Colour-wise, I think we are going to see more auburn colours, as most people want a warmer effect to match the season, toning down their blonde or balayage pieces to more red tones, such as caramel brown warm, to match the mood of the season," says Max Andreas, hairstylist and expert at Claxton Hair. To keep that expensive-looking shine that you get with a new hair colour, be sure to use a regular hair mask to lock in the gloss.

We love Gigi Hadid's deep-auburn take on the copper hair colour trend, which she's paired with a stylish eyelash-skimming fringe.

Ask your stylist to weave multidimensional copper tones through the lengths of your hair, which will make curls shine.

If you needed any more convincing to switch to red this season, then Julianne Moore's copper hair colour is all the inspiration you need.

2.'70s Shapes

Seventies haircuts and hairstyles are still a strong hair trend for autumn/winter 2022. "The '70s-blowout look is becoming a popular style and haircut in the salon," says Rebecca Watkins, hairstylist at Tweedie & Marshall Hairdressing. "Many of our clients are loving the chunky bangs and blow-dries with loads of volume and a big bouncy curl to finish it off."

"The '70s are still so influential for A/W 22," says Barry Maddocks, UK creative director of Haringtons. "The effortless half-up, half-down vibe is a strong vibe, and I’m totally here for it; think Brigitte Bardot, undone and effortless. This look is totally chic and is day-and-night appropriate." 

Here, Symphani Soto gives Bridgette Bardot's classic hairstyle a modern update. "To get the look, first I would create some movement throughout the hair using a GHD tong. Then, taking a Kent Brush large quill paddle brush, brush out by pulling some of the sides up and pinning in place," says Maddocks.

A full '70s-inspired fringe looks so chic and is a nod to the French-girl hair trend, too.

3. Undone Bun

Not just for working from home, a messy bun is a timeless classic, and a welcome antidote to the sleek buns we've been seeing of late. And hairstylists are seeing the return of the trend, too. "I think we will also see the return of the messy bun," notes Rhys Chiwara, hairstylist at November Collective salon.

4. Bottleneck Bangs

A nod to the '70s hair trends that we're seeing, fringes are big news for A/W 22, with bottleneck bangs making a great option. "Fringes and soft bottleneck bangs will reign supreme, giving us more of the much-loved '70s vibes," says Chiwara.

Bottleneck bangs are showcased beautifully when tied back into a ponytail.

5. Natural Texture

More of a cultural shift than a trend, textured hair will continue to be embraced in its natural form. "For those with naturally textured hair, we will be seeing people embrace those stunning curls," says Maddocks. "Keeping the natural texture is super beautiful. Simone Rocha celebrated curls on the runway by teaming natural texture with hair accessories."

"Rather than working against your natural texture, work with it," says Paul Percival, the founder of Percy & Reed and a BaByliss global ambassador. "The shag haircut is a nice way to enhance a curl, and there is a type of shag cut to suit everyone, whether that's a soft fringe, square around the face or longer at the back. Whatever curl you have, there is a version to suit you. It all comes down to the layering," he adds.

6. '90s Bob

"Anything with a '90s vibe is still huge for 2022. Therefore, centre partings and boy bobs will still be in demand," predicts Percival. "When talking to your stylist about getting this look, make sure there is no graduation to the style. You want the bob to be completely square and straight, not higher at the back. It's all about sharp, sharp lines," he says.

"If the hair is heavy, you can soften the outline by texturizing through the ends," says Percival. "A great product to style this look is Percy & Reed Hold It Right There! Define & Hold Finish Cream. This is a perfect finisher for this style, as it is lightweight and can be applied to wet or dry hair for definition and hold. For a straighter, glass-like finish, use the BaByliss Pro Prima Straightener."

7. Liquid Hair

Whether it be wet-look or super-glossy lengths, shine will be taken to new lengths in A/W 22. "This trend is stunning, and we saw models at the Fendi show sporting wet hair," says Maddocks. But if the wet look has you feeling fearful, you can still tap into the trend in a subtler way. "At home, I would blow-dry sleek and use a shine spray to give that stunning high-gloss finish," suggests Maddocks.

8. Bronzed Wood

"Shades of brown dominated A/W 22 fashion week, [with] designers such as Chloé, Chanel and ACNE Studios displaying the versatility and richness of this hue," says Wella Professionals digital craft expert Jordanna Cobella. "Bronzed Wood is a mixture of subtle caramel hues with darker neutral tones running throughout the hair. Think muted, multidimensional hues that add depth and movement to the hair," she says. What really makes the Bronzed Wood shade is the luxurious shine, making the colour look rich and luxurious.

9. Tweed Blonde

Much like the intertwining colours found in tweed, Tweed Blonde sees multiple shades of blonde weaved through the lengths of the hair for a multidimensional feel. "After periods of uncertainty, people tend to embrace warmer, richer tones that are nourishing and optimistic. We're seeing this trend transfer across to hair, with clients embracing warm golden honeycomb tones post-pandemic," says Cobella. "The beige-blonde trend has embraced a warmer palette with highs and lows of nude, beige and sandy tones. These warmer tones tend to reflect light more than ashier hues so will help the appearance of shine on the hair." 

"Wella Professionals' new in-salon Shinefinity service is perfect for achieving this look. The glaze can be woven throughout the hair to create a tweed effect, and because [it's] zero-damage, [it adds] a healthy-looking shine to the hair," says Cobella.

Ask your hair colourist to place different pieces of blonde into the hair for a three-dimensional look, which instantly makes hair look thicker, too.

Season two of Emily in Paris is released on Netflix next week, and so the cast are busy doing last minute promotions. Lily Collins has just worn a modern spin on a very classic Parisian outfit, offering a slightly different interpretation of the jeans, black heels and a boucle jacket look. Up Next: Lily Collins Just Put the Coolest Spin On This Classic Parisian Outfit

Between the sheer number of Chanel handbags and the prevalence of stiletto heels on cobblestone streets, you wouldn't be wrong in thinking that the costume design in Emily in Paris is a little unrealistic. While I don't think the series was trying to infer that it's normal for your average 20-something to be swanning around in Chanel tweed jackets and Louboutin heels, there's no shame in feeling like Emily Cooper's wardrobe did not align with your reality. 

Of course, even for those of us who don't own a Dior baker boy cap or Off-White puffer coat, there are a few other more-attainable style ideas we can steal from the show's protagonist, most prominent being her penchant for tonal colour dressing. 

Throughout the series, Emily appears in a number of brightly coloured outfits which often revolve around a single hero colour. Whether it be green, yellow, or pink, Emily often picks a certain hue and styles an entire outfit around its various shades. 

For example, one of the season's most memorable outfits included a pastel green Chanel coat paired with a green tartan bucket hat and a lime-coloured Staud bucket bag. In another episode, Emily was seen in a shocking pink coat with a matching skirt and a pink patterned jumper.

Those of us who love the soothing twang of singer-songwriter country folk have been eagerly awaiting a new album from this duo, comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White. While they first made headlines with their critically adored (and ultimately Grammy-winning) album Barton Hollow, they blew up when they collaborated with Taylor Swift on “Safe & Sound,” the keystone of the first Hunger Games soundtrack. Sadly, The Civil Wars have dissolved their band, so this self-titled album will likely be their last.

Halcyon Days and Halcyon Days Deluxe, Ellie Goulding

If you’ve been living in the dark and haven’t heard the sweet, poppy “Lights,” by lovely sylph Ellie Goulding, you’re missing out. OK, so technically their album dropped on July 30th, but that’s August adjacent, and I had to give AlunaGeorge some love. I first stumbled across this amazing electro-R&B-pop duo (made up of the honey-voiced Aluna Francis and beats-master George Reid) when I was going through the BBC’s “Sound of ’13” finalists, and they blew my mind. With Body Music, this Brit pair delivers an album full of bouncy, smooth jams heavy on the synth, and light on the boredom. This is my favourite album of 2013!

This sophomore effort from New York Times best-selling author Marisha Pessl (Special Topics in Calamity Physics) is the perfect summer read. FYF Fest hits Los Angeles on August 24th and 25th, bringing Beach House, Solange, MGMT, and My Bloody Valentine—and over 50 other acts to L.A.’s State Historic Park. No dusty fields or oppressive heat? I’ve never been happier with my decision to skip Coachella this year!

Lake Bell wrote, directed, and starred in this Sundance film about one woman’s adventures in the strangely male-centric world of movie trailers. This 23-year-old first caught my attention as the spiky teen in Showtime’s now-canceled United States of Tara. She has since gone on to star as Channing Tatum’s lady love in 21 Jump Street and Michael Cera’s crazy ex in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Brie is also an amazing filmmaker, having written and directed shorts, including “The Arm” (alongside Sarah Ramos and Jesse Ennis), which screened at Sundance. This month she stars in the heartbreaking drama Short Term 12, which won both the Jury and Audience awards at this year’s SXSW. Bonus: Her red-carpet style is as multifaceted as her career.
