Although I own roughly 15 pairs of different jeans, I have a confession to make—I bought my first pair of Levi's this year. I know, I know, crazy right? As a fashion editor for over a decade, you would think I would own one of the most iconic denim brands of all time. I've admired them on other people for so long, I've even had them in my saved baskets online, but I've never gone through with actually securing a pair until recently. I visited the London Designer Outlet in Wembley for the first time and I found the '94 Baggy—one of Levi's most recognisable cuts—in-store at a discounted price. I would definitely recommend visiting the outlet to get some of the most iconic Levi's for less, and another tip is to hunt in vintage stores, too.

The thing is, I never really knew what style of Levi's to actually invest in. I've heard the Ribcage straight-leg pairs are the dream fit. I know that vintage Levi's 501 denim always looks effortless, but it wasn't until I tried them on myself that my penchant for baggier fits was confirmed. Still, there are so many pairs to try––including the new XL straight––which is why I decided to try all the pairs I've heard good things about from my fellow fashion editor friends to see what all the fuss is about.

I've come to this conclusion: If you want to wear Levi's jeans, then stick to these 5 types below. Now, excuse me while I make up for lost time and order them all. (And for reference, I'm a size 10, 5'4" and I usually opt for a 29 waist in denim).

1. Levi's Ribcage Wide-Leg

Style Notes: Okay, okay, I get the hype! I've seen so many fashion editors and influencers wearing the 'Ribcage' styles, but this is the first time I've tried them for myself. My thoughts? They make my bum look good, my waist look smaller than it is and my legs look longer––what is this magic? If you're not into high-waisted pairs then these wouldn't be for you as they sit very high up to create all of these effects, but if you are, then I would highly recommend. I'm wearing a W29 and L32 and I would have probably gone for a slightly shorter leg so I can wear them with flats. I can only imagine how long my legs would look if I style them with heels, though.

2. Levi's 501 Original

Style Notes: When you think of a pair of jeans, it's most likely Levi's 501 Originals that call to mind. Officially, the world's first pair of blue jeans, the design was introduced in 1873 with the same five-button fly and deep pockets that are still present today. A mainstay in charity shops and vintage boutiques, Who What Wear SEO writer Ava Gilchrist argues that there is nothing quite like breaking in a pair of Levi's 501 yourself. "Consider it a rite of passage, with each wear shaping and forming to your own physique," she explains. "They're quite tight at first, but nothing a few precautionary lunges and squats can't help shape out," she adds. "I personally believe that you have to mould Levi's 501s to get the perfect fit—this gruelling task can't be outsourced or shopped second hand because you just won't have that perfect 'waist snatching' and 'bum lifting' effect that we love about the brand. Plus, there's nothing more iconic than owning a pair loved and adored by Fran Lebowitz, Hailey Bieber and Patti Smith."

3. Levis' 501 90's

Style Notes: Following the originals, the 501 90's is probably the most iconic Levi's style. It first came out in, you guessed it, the 1990's, which was a mere 126 years after the debut style. Since then, they've been a staple pair in most people's wardrobes, but not mine. I feel like I've missed out all this time, as they're just the perfect pair to wear as part of your everyday uniform. Not too fitted, and not too loose, this cropped style is the ideal length for me (I'm wearing a 29 waist and they're the ankle length pair. I wouldn't want this style any smaller as they're a thicker, more structured denim, and there's nothing worse than too-tight jeans. )

4. Levi's Baggy '94

Style Notes: These are the jeans I bought––in two washes––from the London Designer Outlet in Wembley. I sized up to a 30 waist so they sit low on the hips and have a slouchier fit, and I went for a leg length 31. I love a turned up hem so this was the perfect length to be able to wear them slightly bunched up at the bottom or turned up, depending on which shoe I wear. Since getting them, I've worn them at least twice a week, every week. I love how they're similar to a straight leg pair in the legs, and taper in towards the ankle so they're not super wide-leg which can make me appear shorter.

5. Levi's XL Straight

Style Notes: This is a new style from Levi's, and I'm a fan. I'm wearing a W29 but I would 100% go for a 28 as they would look better more fitted at the waist. I'm wearing a L33 here but as you can see, they're too long for my 5'4" frame so I would go for a 31. The loose-fit is very 2025 and I would style them with a roll neck knit and cropped jacket or with a trench coat. They would also look so good with a pointed-toe heel for evening in a slightly darker wash.

6. Levi's Baggy Dad

Style Notes: Let me start off by declaring that I love this style. This is a W29 and L32 and although I could have probably gone for a shorter leg, I don't mind it puddling at the bottom. I would have however sized down to a 28 waist to make them more fitted on the waist. These are the softest denim so don't feel uncomfortable to wear, they don't feel too tight on the crotch (a pet hate of mine) thanks to the slouchier silhouette and they're just a super easy everyday pair.

Given how often I check street style blogs and photo agency pages, I pretty much see every single outfit worn by celebrities, and of them all, Hailey Bieber's the one I spot the most. But this year, I've found it hard to keep track of all of her looks, particularly because they all sort of look the same. You see, while her nighttime 'fits have been all across the board, her daytime ones have mostly revolved around one item: her vintage 501 Levi's shorts sourced by Denim by Orlee.

So far this summer, I've counted five occasions that Bieber's worn the baggy, low-rise cutoffs, whether she's posted the outfits herself on Instagram or been photographed wearing them around NYC and L.A.. On most of them, she's paired the shorts with her go-to white Leset cropped Kelly tee, a black-and-gold The Row belt, white socks, and either loafers or Adidas Sambas. To dress up the shorts, she added a strapless corset top on one occasion, and on others, statement earrings and designer bags, including Bottega Veneta's Jodie and Saint Laurent's Le 5 à 7 tote.

With practically all of the fashion world to choose from, it says a lot that Bieber can't stop coming back to the shorts that consistently divide opinion. One thing's for sure; she's helping me get over my past denim-short traumas.

I always find buying straight leg jeans hard. Fact. I’m 5ft 9in, a large UK 12 on the bottom but have a smaller waist, so I either find that jeans are not cut high enough on the hips, are too short in the leg or are just too tight around the hips in order to make sure they’re not baggy around my middle.

For the past few seasons '90s-inspired straight leg jeans have been the key denim trend to buy into. Any content creator worth her salt has been photographed in a pair and they continue to be the season-less jean shape that designers and retailers bring out time and time again. So, why are they so popular? No one can deny that they’re incredibly versatile, mostly due to the classic shape and unfussy washes. They can be worn day or night, dressed up or down and can be pared back with most colour palettes. The classic Levi's stonewash continues to be the most popular and easiest colour to style and they instantly give even the most casual of outfits an element of cool.

However, straight jeans also tend to be designed with no stretch, which is a bit of a nightmare for anyone to find the very best fit. The reality is that the larger the waist size you need to buy, the wider the leg, so if you have wide hips but slim legs this just won’t work. And vice versa, if you have thicker thighs and a smaller waist, the struggle continues!

Buying jeans has never been an enjoyable experience for most of us, with every retailer adhering to different size guides. I will happily buy larger sizes than I usually wear to ensure the perfect fit, but what is annoying is having to take two or more pairs of each style into the changing room, or my online basket, and even then it's not a given I won't have to pick up another. I’m a large UK 12 on the bottom, so at a push I should fit into a size 30 or 31. But, with some brands it's really normally for me to need another two sizes or more up. Inaccurate sizing is not the only issue when shopping for jeans online. Some retailers add filters to their denim imagery on their websites making it impossible to decipher the exact colour. All in all, it can be a pretty time consuming exercise for an item that is so basic and integral to our wardrobes. 

So, to save you the time and trouble—and to bring a little joy back into shopping for denim—I went out and tried on all the straight-leg jeans I could fit into, whittling it down to my favourite eight pairs available now that work on a midsize figure like mine. Enjoy!

1. THE HIGH STREET FAVOURITE

Style Notes: & Other Stories is one of my favourite brands on the high street. When I headed into store, there were quite a lot of jean styles and washes available, which can sometimes be overwhelming. That said, this pair (the Favourite Cut) were true to size and tend to always be in stock, which is a bonus! Plus, they're a flattering, classic shape that will work with most footwear and tops. A great start!

2. THE INFLUENCER MUST-HAVE

Style Notes: I have been waiting to try these on for a while. They're an influencer favourite and when I heard they were called the '90s Pinch Waist High-Rise they appeared to tick all the boxes. After trying them on what's immediately apparent is how they are cut high on the hips and allow for curves. Yes, they're an investment, but on this occasion you do get what you pay for.

3. THE STRAIGHT-LEG WILD CARD

Style Notes: The Agolde Criss-Cross jeans another influencer favourite and what I loved about them was that they were suprisingly roomy in the right size. They definitely felt and I like the support and trend-led detail the crossover waistband provides. This is an especially great style to dress up. Add a body, pointy heels and oversized blazer.

4. THE CROPPED STRAIGHT LEG FOR PETITES

Style Notes: Although I love the brand for timeless classics such as knitwear and blazers, I have to admit that I find buying jeans in Arket always a struggle. They are either always sold out or they never have the sizes that I need. They also rarely design jeans with any stretch in them, so normally it's a no-go in denim for me. That said, I got lucky and found a great pair in store to try on. This time I had to opt for a size 33, so a few sizes larger than my normal.

5. THE STONEWASH CLASSIC

Style Notes: If you don't know where to start with straight leg jeans, you can't go wrong with a pair of iconic Levis 501s. I used to struggle with 501s but the brand has recently developed their offering to feature more high waisted shapes that work better on wider hips and to suit different body shapes.

6. THE MID-WAIST FAVOURITE

Style Notes: For me, buying jeans from Mango is a real mixed bag as a tall girl. Some styles are far too short—I find cropped styles are more like pedal pushers on me—but these straight legs are perfect! They come is various washes and were a really nice length. I'm a convert!

Style Notes: Zara have come on leaps and bounds with their denim offering over the past couple of years. They do fit small, but the styles themselves are pretty great for the price point. I really liked how high on the hips this pair sat and how long they were. If you're looking to spend under £50 but want a great cut and colour, these are for you.

8. THE BLEACHED STRAIGHT LEG

Style Notes: I love a more bleached wash, so I was instantly drawn to this pair. It's not easy to find this colour, especially on the high street, and in a shape that fits me well, so I snapped them up instantly. They're more of a cropped ankle but the frayed hem is a nice added detail. Plus, they were super soft.

Chloë Sevigny stopped by our Sundance photo suite—the Who What Wear x Vida Tequila x Glam App Lounge on Main Street—to talk film, fashion, and more.

Sevigny is at the annual Park City, Utah, festival to promote her latest project, Love & Friendship, director Whit Stillman’s adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Lady Susan. In the comedy, she plays Alice, the American confidante of the cunning Lady Susan Vernon (played by a spectacular Kate Beckinsale).

“Lady Susan is a bit of a bad girl and has a reputation,” Sevigny says. “I think we all have girlfriends that we love and adore and are wild, and we kind of live out our fantasies through them and their brazenness.”

We certainly live out our style fantasies through the actress, who nailed winter dressing in a shearling Coach coat paired with a Gucci blouse and vintage Levi’s. Keep reading for more from our exclusive interview.

Who What Wear: What made you want to be a part of Love & Friendship?

Chloë Sevigny: I am just a fan of [director] Whit [Stillman]. I think he has such an original voice, and even though I know it’s an Austen and an adaptation, I knew he would infuse it with his own Whit kind of humor and pacing. I just think he is a true artist in the film industry, which there are a bunch of them out there, but they are not always knocking on my door, so I was really thrilled to work with him again. I loved working with him on Last Days of Disco. I love that movie. I’m so proud of it. I’d always wanted to do a period piece—you know, the sweeping period drama—so I was game!

WWW: Can you tell us about your character in the film, Alicia? What intrigued you about her?

CS: My character is an American in England, and she’s married to a respectable man played by Stephen Frye. She lives vicariously through her girlfriend Lady Susan, played by Kate Beckinsale. Lady Susan is a bit of a bad girl and has a reputation, and I think we all have girlfriends that we love and adore and are wild, and we kind of live out our fantasies through them and their brazenness. So I kind of related to [Alicia] in that way, because I have girlfriends who are so outspoken, bright, and witty. My best friend Natasha Lyonne, for instance. I’m always so enamored with her and how she can control herself in situations. It’s the same with my character and Lady Susan.

WWW: What did you enjoy most about filming this project?

CS: I think going through and working with the costume designer, and from the different layers of the undergarments and the fittings. It was such a fantasy. And they have such a handle on it. They do so many period pictures in Dublin, and everybody was just so enthusiastic and good at their craft. It’s nice to work with people who are really good at what they do.

WWW: The costumes are pretty spectacular! Did you find them challenging?

CS: I mean, not so much. The things one would think, like going pee. But probably all the volume, because we are not used to it. Of course I’m wearing a huge jacket today, which is often problematic, but the volume I think was the most surprisingly challenging thing to overcome. I think my favorite look was a pale blue look that I wore that was an actual vintage piece from the costume house in London.

WWW: You have been a style hero for so many women. Who are the stylish women who inspire you?

CS: Just friends of mine who are a little more adventurous in their style, like Liz Goldwyn in Los Angeles. I think she has amazing style. My friend Tara Subkoff has really great style. And my friend Lizzie Bucato, and Jen Brill in New York City. I think she always looks super cool in whatever she wears. They are my standouts. 

WWW: What’s your favourite piece you own?

CS: I have this hood that is from the ’40s. It’s a black cashmere hood and it has all these bronze sequins all over it. And of course, I live in New York and it’s very cold, so I’ve been wearing that a lot; it’s my new favourite piece. And it’s a piece that makes people really happy, and I like that a lot. I hear people who don’t even recognize me say, “Oh my God, look at her hood!” People audibly get excited about it and it’s nice to wear something that can make people smile. Sometimes my boyfriend is like, “Why are you wearing that crazy blue blah blah blah,” and I was like, “Because it makes women smile and I like to see that.” It’s fun.

WWW: Your jeans are amazing! What are the?

CS: These are Levi’s I actually wore in the ’90s, and they were really long. I used to step on them and there was that half-moon hole in the back. I wore them to the Venice Film Festival with Boys Don’t Cry in like ’99 or something. And I still fit in them, which is dope.

WWW: Can you tell us about your most recent fashion purchase or discovery?

CS: Oh God, I mean I purchase things almost every day—it’s my addiction. Funny enough, Tory Burch sent me these hiking boots for Sundance with red laces, and I was like feeling these weird Tory Burch hiking boots. They are going to be my jam back in New York City. I mean, I’ve always been into that classic ’80s red-lace hiking boot thing. Maybe I’ll incorporate them into some outfit while I’m here. It was kind of more like a surprising thing.

WWW: What has been the most rewarding part of your career thus far?

CS: I just actually directed my first short film called Kitty. It’s about a little girl who turns into a cat, and it stars a 7-year-old girl. I think that’s been the most rewarding. I’ve always wanted to do it but was not confident enough. But I somehow found the security in my relationship and where I am in my life, my age, that I was like I’m just going to do this. And not to toot my own horn or anything, but I think I did a really great job. It was really rewarding and just communicating to different people on set and the actors, I just felt really comfortable. Of course, it was only three days; if you had to sustain over a couple of weeks I think it would be a whole different thing. But I think I want to keep going with that.

WWW: Is there something you haven’t done in your career yet that you would like to explore?

CS: I think I would like to do more naturalistic style acting. I did a series on Netflix called Bloodline, and I feel like the acting was very naturalistic, and I’d like to do bigger parts. I think the only starring roles I ever had were Kids and Boys Don’t Cry, and I feel like I would like to have bigger, more challenging roles.

Despite skinnies being around for decades, it's surprisingly difficult to find a pair that strikes the perfect balance. Many of the skin-tight jeans out there are so stretchy that they start sagging in awkward places after just a few wears, and others are so rigid they feel like a straight jacket for your legs. What you really want is a considered blend of cotton and elastane; a composition that offers enough give that you can happily wear them all day, combined with the durability of genuine denim.

Our very own editor Poppy Nash is particularly impressed by Zara's skinny jeans offering. "Zara's denim is like Marmite. You either love it or you hate it and I for one love it. I've shopped at Zara for years and along with dresses and shoes, denim is one of the categories I know always delivers. Sure, the sizing can be totally off, and on plenty (read: every) of occasions I've headed into a Zara fitting room with everything from a S to an XL in the hope that the buttons do up, but if I take my own advice and ignore the labels, I actually always come out with some really great jeans. Right now, the brand has tons of skinny styles, including a black, high-rise pair under £30 that I'd wear with a relaxed blazer and knee-high boots all season long.”

2. Mango 

Personally, I turn to Mango above all other brands for affordable and long-lasting denim. I still own a pair of black skinny jeans that I bought when I first moved to Edinburgh five years ago—despite wearing them constantly, they look almost as good as new, and I still pull them out when I'm building a sleek evening outfit. Dark denim is great for that. Mango's selection is also more inclusive than most on the high street; the majority of cuts come in sizes 4–26. With jeans this good, it's a relief that they're available to a range of body types.

Frame's Le High skinny jean is a cult hit, characterised by its super snug fit and stretchy denim. The indigo washes feel particularly expensive, easy to slot into both relaxed daytime looks and evening ensembles. Thanks to the tight fit around the ankle, this jean pairs well with the current flat shoe craze—consider a dainty ballet flat or Mary Jane to give this classic a Parisian spin. "I'm not usually a skinny jeans girl, but the Spare Mid style from Weekday has me in a bit of a chokehold,” says Rebecca Rhys-Evans, our branded content editor. "The ultra black shade is ideal for effortless day to night dressing—I'll wear them with an oversized white shirt and ballet flats for the office, then change into some sparkly kitten heels and add lipstick for dinner. The mid height on the waist is perfect for pairing with a shirt, I tuck about 70% of it into the waistband and always wear a belt to create a billowing, almost 1980s silhouette that feels very Princess Diana. If you're committed to the skinny look and are ready to invest in a hard-wearing pair, turn to Paige's Hoxton jeans. At around the £250 mark, they're not cheap, but you can be confident you'll be wearing them for years to come. The high waist sits right around the belly button, perfect for tucking in shirts and knitwear without feeling suffocated. While the simplicity of the Hoxton will always have my heart, right now I have my eye on the new Bombshell jeans, which feature an exposed button fly. I'm sold.

While there’s no shortage of unique outfits to observe, there’s at least one thing nearly all festivalgoers have in common: a love of denim, namely Levi’s®. I'm personally a big denim wearer. I don't care what brand I'm wearing, as long as they have a great fit. I've spent way under $100 on some of my favourites pairs of jeans.

I can never have enough white tops in a wide variety of styles. They're something you can wear all year-round. If I love one, often I'll pick up two in different sizes: one for a true fit and the other larger one for an oversized boyfriend or tunic feel. White tops are very versatile and usually quite affordable.

I love a T-shirt that has texture and feels more elevated, but at the same time is extremely easy and comfortable for everyday wear. In addition to Jerome Dreyfuss’ slouchy Max Leopard Bag ($2295), Madekwe eyed Proenza Schouler’s The PS11 Classic Textured Leather Shoulder Bag ($1950) in Bright Blue, noting that she would wear it cross-body style to add a touch of prep to her outfit. 

When Madekwe’s embracing her edgier sensibilities, Saint Laurent’s Leather Ankle Boots ($950) in Red are the perfect finishing touch. 

Madekwe showcased her affinity for the boyfriend jean when she turned up at our office wearing a pair with Chanel flats. She confirmed her love for the slouchy style when she picked the similarly slouchy Relaxed Straight Leg Jeans ($88) by Blank NYC.

A fan of the grunge trend for fall, Madekwe quickly fell for the Marc by Marc Jacobs Aimee L’Oeil Merino Wool Sweater ($280). “I would wear this with a really dark maroon lip, some ripped jeans, and Dr. Martens, ” she says.

Madekwe first called out the swishy silhouette and studded detailing of Versus’ Allover Gold Studded Skirt ($595) in Black, but she also liked the fact that she could “dress it down with a denim shirt and some brogues.”

“A sweatshirt with leather sleeves is all me,” Madekwe says, laughing, pulling AllSaints’ Niro Top ($260) off the rack. “This would be a great everyday piece with skinny jeans, flats, or sneakers. You could definitely wear this in the evening as well.”

Of all the jewellery pieces in our closet, Madekwe was most smitten with J.Crew’s Spiky Rope Necklace ($128). “I love wearing really ornate embellished pieces with more dressed-down items,” she says.

A good pointy pump, like Brian Atwood’s Cassandra Pumps ($613) in Rouge Suede, are a staple for the actress. So what would she wear with them? Simply put: “Everything I own.”

“Stripes are a great basic,” Madekwe says. She immediately gravitated toward towards LNA’s Ruby Tank ($84), commenting on its ability to quickly pull an outfit together. “This would be great with a red lip—very French,” she added.

Not just any denim jacket will do for this British stunner. “Again, it’s a basic with something special,” she said about Versus’ Jean Jacket with Studded Details ($625). “I love the embellishment and that it has that old-school ‘90s vibe.”

While most online tutorials simply tell you to pick a length and cut, I knew there was more to it than that. So with some Levi’s 501 jeans, scissors, a ruler, and chalk, I set out to create two shorts, one cuffed and one frayed—and I'm really thrilled with the results. Keep reading for the jorts secrets you need to know when making your own pair!

Let’s talk style and fit first. This is not a project for your stretchy skinny jeans, so leave those alone. I think that 100 per cent cotton denim, like Levi’s 501 Jeans ($78), is your best bet. As for fit, go for a straight leg or boyfriend silhouette that is slightly baggy throughout the leg.

That may sound odd, but you're going to mark them up with chalk and you need to see where the pockets are (you don't want to cut through them), so this is an essential step.

Lay the jeans flat on a smooth surface and measure 12 inches along the outside edge, starting at the top of the waistband. Mark with chalk.

Once you have your correct measurement, mark it with chalk. Using the ruler, create a dashed line across the pant leg, starting at the outer seam and moving inwards. I recommend angling the line downwards toward the inner seam to allow for an extra inch of length. This prevents the shorts from bunching along the inner thigh area and is ultimately more flattering.

With a pair of sharp scissors, cut across the dash line with scissors. Repeat steps one through four on the other leg. 

The finishing touch: frayed edges. Turn your shorts right side out and use a seam ripper or a needle to tear the seams along the hem (this will give them a naturally frayed look). If you want a more dramatic fray, throw your jorts in the washer and then dry on low heat.

Again, you’ll want to turn your jeans inside out before starting. 

Lay the jeans flat on a smooth surface and measure along the outside seam. It’s best to add two inches to your desired length to account for the cuff. I wanted a slightly longer look that hit mid-thigh, so I measured approximately 17 inches from the top of the waistband. For a shorter style, measure 15 inches. Once you have your correct measurement, mark it with chalk. (Note: another good way to determine your desired length is by putting on the jeans and marking the point where your middle finger hits the side of your leg.)

Using the ruler and chalk, create a dashed line across the pant leg, starting at the outer seam and moving inwards. 

Using a pair of sharp scissors, cut across the dash line. Repeat steps one through four on the other leg. 

Turn your shorts right side out and roll the bottom of each leg twice to create a clean cuff.
