The days are getting warmer, and my monthly pedi has been reinstated, so it can only mean one thing: spring has officially sprung. As I try to push the gloomy, grey days of winter out of my mind, there’s one thing that always lifts my spirits: shopping for a new investment piece. Much like the weather outside, my capsule wardrobe had begun to fall a little flat and was in need of some TLC. To rectify the situation, I looked to the chicest dressers I know: the fashionable people on my social media feeds.

We haven't seen a ton of Meghan Markle lately, but I'm crossing my fingers for a surprise Met Gala appearance on the first Monday of May. How amazing would that be? In the meantime, however, I want to revisit one of her favourite pairs of sunglasses because I just noticed that Net-A-Porter has restocked the exact pair (just in time for sunny weather, we hope!) and are also home to a whole host of other chic styles from the affordable brand. 

While the Duchess of Sussex prefers the original black cat-eye style, there are also rectangular shapes, oval iterations and trend-led oversized numbers. In addition to an array of hues. How could I possibly decide on my favourite? I wish I could buy one of each to go with all my spring/summer outfits, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with the tortoiseshell sunnies, which I'd wear with a floral midi dress and trainers or jeans and a simple white tee. Plus, I know they'd become a firm favourite in my holiday wardrobe, too.

Is there any outfit dilemma that a pair of sunglasses can't fix? For every time I've found myself standing perplexed in front of the wardrobe, there has been a pair of sunnies to fix it. Tired and in a rush? A white tee, jeans and everyday black specs. Heading out on holiday? A swimsuit, shorts and a playfully coloured pair. Dressing up for a formal event? Well, I'm summer-wedding ready in a floaty maxi and oversized sunglasses. Even at a photo shoot, you'll find me in a confidence-boosting pair of sunglasses. (In fact, I bought three pairs of my current favourite Le Specs Rapture glasses before they sold out.) Sunglasses really are the finishing touch to any outfit as soon as the weather heats up, and who better to ask about the styles to know now than Hamish Tame, creative director of Le Specs?

"This summer, there is an exciting Y2K revival and love of noughties sunglasses, particularly with rimless shapes and tinted lenses," says Hamish. Next up, the biggest spring/summer 2020 fashion trends to know.

Last month we were clued into the fact that Kanye West thinks small '90s-style sunglasses are the next big trend. While these throwback sunnies aren't exactly new (they have been a celebrity fave and a runway staple), expect them to make a major splash this coming spring. My obsession began when I first started wearing Adam Selman and Le Spec's cat-eye style, but since then I've come to crave other tiny styles.

And I'm not the only one. I've seen this teeny-tiny accessory with increasing frequency in my Instagram feed, and this fashion month I expect to see plenty more, especially styles by up-and-coming brands like Poppy Lissiman and George Keburia.

While the style might at first feel jarring when we've all spent so many years favouring super-size shades, it's surprisingly wearable. My recommendation: Try wearing them a bit lower on the bridge of your nose; they frame the eye better when they're not pushed all the way up on the face. And if the super-skinny style seems a bit too much to start out with, there are other small shades that may feel a little less intimidating. Shop a few of my current favourites below.

The off-duty Costume National suit gets the city style treatment thanks to an oversize Loewe leather jacket.

While fashion's main claim to fame may be its seasonality—what's "in" and "out" is bound to change alongside the weather—there are some items that stylish women stock their closets with year-round.

We asked our resident styling expert, Banana Republic's Marissa Webb, to share her thoughts on which accessories can take a woman from season to season in style. Keep scrolling to see the six pieces she thinks every woman needs! 

You can never have enough pairs. Most people have their signature shape, but to mix up your look, I think it's worth exploring all different types every season. There's usually something new out there to add to my collection. It's also fun to explore different colour frames, and to shop in both the men's and women's sections.

You simply need to have your favourite shoe of the season.

Handbags are a great way to freshen up your look. I usually carry something neutral during the day, and love to add a pop of colour to my handbag at night.

I usually go softer in the winter and a little bit bolder in the summer, when I have a bit more colour from the sun. Lipstick shades are, of course, very personal depending on skin tone, so a lipstick that looks great on you might not work for me. It's important to try different brands to find the perfect shade for you.

Scarves are a great accessory for all year-round in different weights and fabrications. It's one of those easy pick-up items from your travels. They also make great gifts!

From the perfect Panama hat for warmer days to interesting knit caps for winter to brimmed hats in all their forms—hats are great not only for function, but also for flair.

Adam Selman may be best known as Rihanna's right-hand man. He's not only her costume designer, but also her frequent collaborator, most recently on a capsule collection for River Island. The two make a good pair—both are drawn to a vaguely campy aesthetic. Selman, though, has slowly been stepping out of RiRi's shadow to make a name for himself solo. Though his collections so far have flown under the radar, a new sunglasses line with Le Specs may change that.
