Those who have become accustomed to the freezing winds and blistering chill will already have a robust arsenal of thermal layers to see them through the season, knowing that it’s these fundamental base pieces that are truly the difference between staying warm whilst still appearing stylish. Speaking to Alexa Dagmar and Linda Juhola, the co-founders of Almada Label, a Finnish-based minimalistic luxury brand revered for its well-edited and foundational approach to fashion, the pair tell me just why thermal layers are such an important investment for those battling icy climates. “Having high-quality basics you can easily throw on in the morning is essential,” they explain. “With the right accessories, these staple pieces like turtlenecks, jumpers and T-shirts can be dressed up or down, making them incredibly versatile and effortless to wear.”

When shopping for the best thermal basics, they recommend to “always gravitate toward materials that are easy to care for and truly stand the test of time”, like knitwear. “A perfect winter layer should keep you warm without making you overheat, which is why I love pairing a very thin, chic turtleneck with a thicker knit,” they add. “You can wear a lightweight turtleneck underneath for warmth, and if you get too hot, simply remove the chunkier layer while still looking put-together,” they note. “When we designed our [iteration], we wanted it to be seamless and refined, so it could be dressed up or down and wouldn’t resemble performance wear, which is often the case with very thin knits.”

That last note is one that I, especially as someone who grew up in Sydney but now calls London home, find the most relevant. Thermal layers can sometimes make you feel like you’re dressing for a day on the slopes. (Read: Gwyneth Paltrow in Deer Valley Resort circa 2016.) There are a lot of trends that, no matter how outdated they become, will always come back—period. January is only a few hours away, and though we're moving onto the new year, the one thing that will stay firmly with us is the cold weather. So the hunt for good cashmere continues and I, for one, am always here for it. Traditionally, when shopping for the best cashmere jumpers, you would have to head to some pretty expensive designer brands but, thankfully, today the choice is endless. Winter in New York is no walk in the park. I know this from experience, firstly because I grew up in Chicago and know what a brutal winter looks (and feels) like, and secondly because I've experienced my fair share in New York over the last five years. Really, the only way to get through it is to dress the part, which I've only been able to do because I study those around me who all seem to do it with ease. 

New York City is full of savvy dressers who always make looking good appear easy even in the worst weather situations, whether it's 37ºC in August and the humidity reads 80% or a -5ºC one that, according to AccuWeather, feels like -15ºC. New Yorkers are simply built different, and it shows when you look to the streets (on a freezing-cold winter day especially). With plenty of them to come this season, I've already started scanning my surroundings for winter outfit inspiration. And just like the last five winters, my neighbours didn't disappoint.

As much as we hoped we could hold onto Autumn days, it's clear that there's no stopping the arrival of cooler weather. As someone that's always cold, I know that as soon as we drop a degree, I'll be layering up. So naturally, I’ve been spending the last few days working out how I can stay cosy and warm, all the while maintaining a stylish aesthetic. Impossible? I initially thought so. Then, I stumbled across a key find from Arket, which will help me achieve this. 

Did you know that merino wool helps keep you warm by insulating instead of trapping heat? Merino wool fibres have a natural crimp, which allows them to trap dead air and act as an insulator—and a shield against the cold. This, in turn, helps keep your body at a more even and warmer temperature. I learned this a few years back when I was prepping for a ski trip, and now, whenever I see that something is made from merino sheep wool, my interest is immediately piqued. Cue Arket’s merino wool roll-neck. 

I first spotted it when I was searching for a new black roll-neck to replace the one I’d had for years. Upon clicking on it, I was met with a rainbow of roll-necks. A different shade for every mood. From trending green to a striking shade of tomato red along with perennial colour classics such as cream and grey, all made from, yes, my favourite wool. I’d inadvertently stumbled on the toasty staple for which I was longing—and for just £55. I was sold.

We all know that roll-necks are layering heroes, and seeing as we’ve got the coldest months of winter still to come, this has surely got to be the wisest investment to spend my money on as it's a very fine knit and perfect for wearing underneath other items. The paler hues are a little more sheer, so be sure to use your best nude bra when trying them on. It may be a coincidence, but it feels like lockdown has yielded a steady stream of practical-minded trends. I'm thinking basic tank tops, insulating puffer coats, park-ready combat boots and throw-on-and-go dresses. The gilet is one such piece that has ticked both the form and function boxes with its layerable appeal, and I've seen the trend develop over the last 12 months, appearing in all manner of guises, from shearling and quilted puffers to artisanal quilting and heritage tweed.

This week, champion of minimal style and source of eternal outfit envy Kim of @loveclothblog shows us how London girls are layering up their classic staples as they head into autumn.

Layering, for me, is one of the best ways to add interest to my autumn outfits. I rely on it so much to make my simple pieces feel unique. I’m a minimalist at heart, and I’m rarely seen without some sort of denim, so this season, I’ll be reaching for versatile straight-leg jeans (which won’t surprise my Instagram followers who know I’m a big fan), great knitwear, and timeless outerwear. Gap is one of my favourite places on the high street for all of these pieces, so I’m excited to show you three looks from their latest collection that I’ll be living in this season.

As well as layering different neutrals, I’m also enjoying playing around with textures to make a minimal outfit feel interesting. I find that great quality fabrics, like cashmere or 100% cotton, elevate a look immediately. In my autumn capsule, along with my straight-leg jeans in a few different colours and crops to pair with trainers and boots, you’ll always find some navy cashmere. It’s just such a timeless classic that I’ll wear all through this season and beyond.

Denim-wise this month, I’m seeing lots of Londoners opting to pair their cosy pieces with longer length, slightly looser jeans for a 2020 update. With Gap’s Sky High jeans, I can stick to my favourite straight leg but try out that fuller-length inseam, which I’m loving. The skinny jean will always be a classic, but straight styles have that relaxed cool-girl feel that reflects London’s attitude toward fashion. Anything with a slightly vintage feel and not too much stretch, and I’m sold.

The key, though, is to find the style that you feel most comfortable in and work around that. I spend my life searching for the perfect shade of blue, and I think I may have found it in these Gap jeans. As the weather cools and I pack away my sandals for another season, I’ll be pairing my cropped denim with a loafer or chunky trainer. I’ll choose boots or heels to go with the longer-length styles of the moment for a more elevated look.

In London, the weather definitely calls for cosy and comfortable dressing, so I’ll be prioritising that this year. Every Londoner owns a great selection of knitwear, and I’m no different. Some of my favourite pieces from Gap's autumn collection are the knits—the cashmere is super soft and such a great value and the merino wool feels so luxe. They always do the perfect simple shapes, with no fussiness that could ruin it. I’ll pop a white T-shirt under my knits and throw an extra sweater over my shoulders as a scarf-jumper hybrid to add some interesting layers.

The camel coat is the perfect wardrobe staple for autumn. It works seamlessly with any outfit—dressed up with boots or down with trainers. As for this sweatshirt, I was particularly drawn to the button detail, and it’s so soft inside, too.

Cardigans are something I’ve really got into wearing in recent years. They're the ideal throw-on layer, especially for this transitional time. 

For now, I’ll wear mine buttoned up with nothing underneath (am I a chic French girl yet?), but they work just as well over a vest or left open as an added layer.

Due to our new working-from-home routines, I’ve been living in joggers. To make them feel less sporty, I always try and elevate them with a cashmere knit and jacket when running errands.

These looks are perfect examples of how keeping a classic colour palette helps to create a capsule wardrobe you can wear year on year. I always lean toward basic colours, such as navy, whites, and beige, so that all of these pieces can be mixed and matched to make them more versatile. They can be easily layered over each other come winter. The navy knit elevates the joggers but would also work with any of the denim. Likewise, the white henley would pair perfectly with the joggers for a loungewear look, and the camel coat would easily work over everything.

This is just one way I can make sure I’m shopping more mindfully, by investing in timeless pieces that are really well-made and I know I will wear again and again. I just make sure to keep them current with simple styling tricks.

When it comes to jewellery, there’s really two ends of the spectrum: There are the jaw-dropping sparkles and statement pieces that tend to only come out on very special occasions (usually the penchant of A-listers who have regular red carpets to attend), and then there are the everyday pieces you never want to take off.

Staying warm in winter without looking like Joey Tribbiani (aka wearing all the clothes) is not an easy feat. While I have no problem waxing lyrical about the joys of a stunning statement jumper, sometimes, the reality of surviving the cold months is a little less glamorous, particularly when you're making the rounds of the local park (for the 100th time). It was whilst interning that I picked up on one particular layering hack that has seriously changed my winter dressing game. I was told that the fashion editor's secret to keeping warm whilst still looking pulled-together and polished was a distinctly practical-looking £40 gilet.

Coming in a range of colours, Uniqlo's down versions are so light yet super insulating. Their selling point lies in their ability to sit invisibly underneath coats, and thanks to an adjustable neckline, they can even work with undone jackets and blazers (as seen below). Once I wore it out, I never turned back. Suddenly, I could wear my favourite shirts and light knits in winter without having to pile on bulky layers. Plus, if you need any further reason to make the investment, stylish A-lister Katie Holmes was spotted out and about last year with her own layering gilet—clearly, I'm not the only one who is a quilted-vest convert.

It’s that in-between time when wearing a coat is both necessary and inappropriate. We’ve been bundled in swathes of wool and cashmere, polyester and whatever that fabric is that thinks it’s silk but is actually flammable. Anyway, the point is we’ve been layered up like onions and now is the time when the peeling must begin. If you’re with me, strip! Not fully, but do start to consider lightening the load.

The fashion gods are being kind to us this year. You don't need to iron clothes anymore thanks to the runway's interest in crinkled and wrinkled fabrics. You don't have to meticulously match anything—the more offbeat your combinations, the better. You don't have to buy anything new—girls like Leandra Medine are extolling the virtues of wearing the exact same thing they wore three years ago. And now this: an influx of pre-styled, pre-layered dresses heading into stores. It's a micro retail trend that is going to make a massive difference in your daily routine.

Just think of the time you'll save not having to choose/press/experiment with faffing over artistic layering. And, if we're talking about cost, these arranged pieces are no more expensive because they contain essentially two looks in one. Cast your minds back to 2004. Tiered gypsy skirts were the bomb. Studded, low-slung waist-belts completed each and every outfit. To wear a hanky-hem top was to be chic. And boots tucked into jeans made up the casual combination to strut in around town. Wait. Hold up a sec. Is it just us or is the trouser-tucked-into-knee-boot formula starting to shuffle its way out of style Siberia? Kate Moss—the bellwether of rock-chick classicism—has never faltered in her adoration for this styling trick, but we’ve just noticed a few street-chic ladies who are choosing to use the same layering tactic this winter.

It could be down to three things. Our wardrobes have been almost overflowing with knee-high boots since the '70s touched down on the runways, and so, being the ingeniously creative types we naturally are it was only a matter of time until these pull-ons received some special treatment. Second, 2015 was a year run by the opposite: denim worn over boots. And we all know fashion loves to buck an existing trend and do a 180. Third, we are in the midst of a legging renaissance—a leg-assiance, if you will. If there's one skill that distinguishes the true fashion savant, it's mastering the art of layering. Over the past few winters, I've remained baffled by the many stylish people I pass on the streets of London (as well as Paris and even New York) who seem to have effortlessly compiled an outfit that mixes pieces, patterns, colours and textures to create a layered look, while my answer to the cold is simply to throw on the chunkiest jumper and coat I can find. Well, now I'm determined to crack the code. Finally, after examining some of the very best examples of layered outfits on Instagram, I think I've figured out a few of the tricks.

Thankfully, the outfit formulas are pretty much as easy to put together as they look, and most revolve around staple pieces that deserve a place in every wardrobe–and which are endlessly versatile, so that you can mix and match to create multiple layered looks. A white t-shirt comes in especially handy, as this year saw renewed appreciation for the go-to minimalist's styling trick of having a crisp white tee peeking out around the neckline of a jumper. It's such an easy way to make knitwear feel fresh. For those looking to push their skills a little further, focus on playing with layered textures, including one of my personal favourite combinations, leather and cashmere. How luxe.

Style Notes: If there's one foolproof layering pair that'll always look effortlessly cool, it's the white t-shirt peeking out from a jumper. Somehow, it just makes the whole outfit appear that bit more considered. Find the perfect white t-shirt, play with different jumpers, and style with slouchy tailored trousers for a pitch perfect look.
