To layer or not to layer is a question I ponder every morning, and it feels like no matter which decision I make, I simply cannot get it right.

In addition to cultivating long and impressive careers, Katie Holmes and Alexa Chung share another commonality: Excellent taste in clothing and accessories. Both have a penchant for classic design and wardrobe staples, which we saw come into focus this week.

Over just a couple of days, I spotted Holmes and Chung reach for a lesser-worn but supremely chic shoe style that fashion people often opt for to elevate their daily looks. Instead of square-toe or rounded designs, both tapped into the almond-toe shoe trend to finesse their off-duty outfits.

Holmes chose a black almond-toe ballet flat which she paired with white, high-waisted trousers and a relaxed black tee. Using the sleek shoe pairing to smarten up the casual look, Holmes struck a balance between smart and laid-back whilst staying true to her signature effortless style.

Taking a more playful approach, Chung opted for a glistening pair of silver shoes to wear with her black, flared jeans. Featuring a similar almond-toe design, the shoes livened up her denim ensemble in a very fashion-forward way.

Working to elongate the legs, an almond toe shape curves around the foot, finishing in a blunted point as opposed to a fully rounded toe, and we think it looks inherently chic.

I've always found shoe colour trends to be just as intriguing of general shoe trends—if not more so. They're just so easy. You can choose any shoe style you want in that particular color and you'll look on-trend in an instant. But this season, one of the biggest shoe trends is kind of specific. It's a colour plus a style that's getting the most love in fashion right now. It's white flat shoes, and Katie Holmes just wore a pair with a fit-and-flare dress on the streets of New York.

Seriously, if you want to know how a cool NYC girl is dressing at any given time, look no further than Holmes. Her latest put-together outfit is a denim one—something she wears a lot of year-round. But this one was very much a seasonally appropriate denim outfit thanks to the jeans trend she opted to wear.

While black jeans are a favourite during fall and winter, people have been lightening things up (literally) as of late thanks to this fresh trend: cream-coloured jeans. White denim has long been a summertime staple, and cream has overtaken stark white as the preferred denim wash. Of all of the celebrities out there, there's only a small group that I frequently look to for styling inspiration. And, within that group there are two people that I seem to reference time and time again.

Neck-and-neck for 1st position in my own personal rank of "most-stylish celebrity" are Katie Holmes and Jennifer Lawrence. With fairly similar brand preferences—both have a known penchant for timeless pieces from designers such as The Row and Khaite—it's no surprise that I find myself drawn to the two in equal measure.

Showing just how similar their styles are, both actors recently stepped out wearing relaxed graphic tees and ultra-baggy jeans—proving that their fashion sense might be even more alike than I had initially thought.

Selecting a sleeveless graphic top with a bold floral print emblazoned across the front, Holmes styled an outfit seeped in Y2K qualities. Pairing her trending top with ultra-baggy jeans, a chain belt and a small cross-body bag, sghe crafted a look that felt both on-trend yet genuinely wearable in equal measure.

Also inspired by the growing graphic tee trend, Lawrence wore a similarly relaxed outfit for an off-duty day out. Swapping a chain belt for a sleek leather style, Lawrence chose to accessorise with a sage baseball cap and oval sunglasses in lieu of the cross-body bag à la Holmes.
