Catherine, Princess of Wales and Princess Diana are both revered as royal fashion icons, but I’ve never considered their personal styles to be particularly alike. Diana’s wardrobe was rooted in the hallmarks of '80s fashion, gradually transitioning into the sleek minimalism that defined her '90s looks. In contrast, Kate Middleton has long favoured a more restrained and consistent aesthetic; think tailored dresses, jewel-toned hues and classic accessories—a style formula that has remained largely unchanged since her royal debut.

That’s why I did a double take when I saw Middleton step out in an outfit that could have been lifted directly from Princess Diana’s archive. Attending a service in central London to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Middleton wore a white, midi-length polka-dot dress by Alessandra Rich, with a high neckline, voluminous sleeves and a softly cinched waist. The silhouette and print are so reminiscent of Diana’s iconic style, the dress sparked instant déjà vu.

Meanwhile, the former princess once wore a strikingly similar white polka-dot ensemble to Epsom Races circa 1986; a structured two-piece with a nipped-in waist, peplum skirt and bold shoulders, complete with uniform dots. The resemblance was uncanny.

Enduringly elegant, this timeless print feels as relevant today as it did in '86. Accessorising hers with DeMellier's The Midi Montreal bag (£435), Middleton injected a distinctly modern twist into her look, completing it with nude pointed-toe heels, pearl drop earrings and a black headpiece.

I have no qualms with blue and black jeans, but lately, I've been sifting through my denim collection looking for something a little more special.

Sure, white jeans are a nice way to mix things up now and then, but when you want to keep our colour palette rich and interesting, a deeper hue makes much more sense. Inspiring my next denim purchase, I just spotted Kate Middleton styling an unexpected denim colour trend that achieves exactly what I'm looking for in my next pair of jeans.

Stepping out for an engagement in Scotland, Catherine, Princess of Wales, selected a sleek pair of chocolate brown skinny jeans to form the base for her casually polished look. Whilst the rich hue brought depth to her outfit, the Princess wove summer-ready lightness into her look via the pale blue shirt she wore neatly tucked into her high-waisted skinny jeans. Layering a tweed double-breasted blazer over her shirt, Middleton completed her look with a deep pair of espresso brown lace-up boots, using the tonal shade to elongate her legs, all the while grounding her polished ensemble.

If you're tuned into the season's latest trends, then you've likely noticed that black shades don't seem to be holding quite as much weight this year as they normally would. While this all-burgundy look feels like quite a statement, it's actually a colour we've seen Middleton reach for in the past. Often styling shades that toe the line between burgundy and aubergine, Middleton has been known to favour rich berry tones for engagements throughout the winter months. First, we must preface this article by expressing our sincere hope that Catherine, Princess of Wales' treatment is progressing well and looking positive. We had not anticipated that she would be present for the King's birthday celebrations today, but in an Instagram post on the @princeandprincessofwales account the day before she stated, "I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet," providing the world with heads-up that she would return after many months out of the public eye. For the King's Trooping the Colour Parade in central London, Catherine arrived with her husband, William, Prince of Wales and her children Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte and Prince George. In an understated monochrome Jenny Packham dress with an asymmetric bow at the neck, a Philip Treacy hat and floral pearl earrings, the Princess looked the picture of sophistication. She simultaneously tapped into one of the season's most prevalent trends: black and white dresses. It is a simple yet effective formula that we have seen cropping up across a broad spectrum of price points and brands, not just on midis and minis but also via skirts, tops and even swimwear. Eschewing the nude courts that have complimented many an outfit in her archive, the Princess opted for a matching pair of white courts with a contrasting black Mulberry clutch in a high-fashion power move that puts this look into more directional territory.

With awards ceremonies, press events and annual engagements cropping up throughout the weeks, we've had the exciting opportunity to catch an extra glimpse of some of our favourite style icons over the past month. Known to favour a white suit for event-wear, Victoria Beckham was spotted styling the fresh shade from head-to-toe late last week. Opting for mid-rise white wide leg trousers, Beckham style her look with a long-line white blazer, a white blouse and a slim gold belt. 

Attending a carol service at Westminster Abbey, Kate Middleton ignored the wet weather forecast and styled white, floor-skimming wide-leg trousers with a white blouse and longline white coat. Protecting the bottom of her trousers from sneaky puddles and muddy grass, The Princess opted for tall stiletto heels, adding extra height whilst keeping her ankles dry.

Simultaneously, in New York City, Anne Hathaway was spotted mirroring The Princess's outfit, styling a white base layer with matching wide-leg trousers and a lavender cardigan as she left a recording of The Tonight Show. Making her way through the city's streets, Hathaway kept her white trousers looking fresh with chunky beige boots.

Whilst winter whites are a cold-weather no-brainer, when we're met with frequent showers that lead to slippery, muddy pathways, white wide-leg trousers aren't for the faint-hearted, nor can they be described as practical. Delivering a speech at The Design Museum in London today, Catherine, Princess of Wales, wore the trending colour that's completely dividing millennials and Gen Z this season. Dubbed "Gen Z purple", the striking violet shade has become to go-to colour choice for Gen Z-directed marketing—cropping up in adverts and on packaging targeted towards the younger audience for the past few years. Usurping the once prolific "millennial pink" as the favoured colour amongst marketeers, Gen Z purple has transcended the marketing sphere as the latest colour trend being embraced by the fashion set this season. 

Millennials on the other hand? They seem to have different opinions on the colour purple, as one of our Who What Wear UK Slack channels this morning attests. All of our editors who fall into the millennial category said this was, and I quote, "my worst colour". "It reminds me of my school uniform, so I'll never wear it", proclaimed social media editor Joy Ejaria. "I'm sure the bedding from my teens was this exact shade of purple," said deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger.

Styling the divisive tone for her outing in London, Kate Middleton rewore her favourite purple Emilia Wickstead suit. Previously paired with a black turtleneck to an engagement in Northern Ireland in 2021, on this occasion, the Princess wore the now sold-out suit set without a visible top underneath and with royal blue court shoes. In an unexpected twist of fashion fate, Kate Middleton wasn’t the only style icon who we spotted wearing classic bootcut jeans yesterday. Styling hers up for an evening outing, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a black pair with a black, high-neck top and black leather jacket, in a super-sleek all-black look. Attending the Rugby World Cup at the Stade de Marseille in France over the weekend, Kate Middleton called-up a wardrobe hero she’s been reaching for for years: the classic white suit. Comprised of a single-breasted blazer and tailored flared trousers, the Alexander McQueen set has been a favourite of the Princess of Wales, seeing her through events in London and beyond on several occasions.

If you’re anything like me, you are always looking for ways to cut down your time getting ready in the morning without sacrificing style. Beyond makeup, my hair is usually what takes me the longest to do. It’s for that very reason that I like to keep a great rotation of easy-to-copy hairstyles in my repertoire (think ponytail hairstyles and bun hairstyles like these messy bun ideas). One of my main go-tos in particular is the forever chic chignon.

Not only does the updo hairstyle look and feel effortless, but also it’s pretty much appropriate for any occasion. I wear a low slicked-back bun hair look to work out, to lunch with friends, to school dropoff and pickup, and was even this close to wearing one to my wedding. In essence, when it comes to no-fuss hair, my motto is a chic chignon can do no wrong.

When it comes to updo hairstyles, we’ve all heard the words bun and chignon used interchangeably, but is there truly a difference? In short, yes. In fact, the word chignon originates from the French phrase chignon du cou, which roughly translates to nape of the neck. A bun, on the other hand, can be placed anywhere on your head. When I flip through the back catalogue of Kate Middleton’s outfits that I have in my mind, a selection of colours stand out as her most reliable. The Princess of Wales is a firm fan of blue, be it cobalt or sky, striking reds and emerald greens, with many outfits in such shades getting two or more outings each (it’s well documented that she loves re-wearing even her most iconic looks). However, whilst carrying out royal engagements today, Princess Kate wore a colour that is very much trending but that we seldom see her in. 

Of all the fashion trends this summer, I have feeling pink is going to be the most prevalent, no less because of the hotly-anticipated Barbie move that premieres in a couple of months. Whether it’s bubblegum or blush, designers play with the colour each and every season, making it a surprisingly timeless investment. Still, the film’s release has given us all official license to embrace the colour like never before, and it seems Princess Kate is making the most of the moment, with not one but two ensembles in as many days. First, let’s talk about her Alexander McQueen suit. 

Though I stand by the statement I made about how, up until recently anyway, the Princess of Wales rarely wears pink, true to form, she has actually worn this suit before—last year in fact. A gorgeous shade of rose pink, the expertly cut blazer, which features a strong shoulder and clean lapel, pairs perfectly with the taper-cut trouser, which sits delicately on the ankle, allowing for a stand-out shoe moment (more on her footwear later). For an appearance in June last year, Kate styled her two-piece suit with a simple white vest underneath, accompanied by subtle but sparkling diamond earrings. However, for 2023, she embraced a more statement look, adding in a co-ordinating chiffon blouse and a belt adorned with a pearl buckle, both by Camilla Elphick. Rounding off her outfit with white stiletto court shoes from Gianvito Rossi, this ‘90s footwear staple is something she's worn a handful of times lately and always seems to give her looks a stylish edge.

After the busy Coronation weekend, it was right back to work for members of the royal family, but with a far more casual affair for Kate Middleton and Prince William. The coronation outfits of Catherine, Princess of Wales, have been a sight to behold across the entirety of the weekend of celebrations. From the striking cobalt Self-Portrait dress she wore to welcome world leaders to a pre-coronation reception held at Buckingham Palace on Friday evening to her stunning ivory Alexander McQueen gown and ceremonial robe she wore to the coronation itself on Saturday, Kate Middleton’s ensembles have been worthy of the history books they’ll no doubt grace the pages of. And tonight, as she, her husband, Prince William, their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and other members of the Royal Family join members of the public for a very special coronation concert held on the grounds of Windsor Castle, Kate has wowed us with her attire once again. This time, she was wearing the key colour trend of the season.

Up next, Princess Kate Just Wore Her Most-Regal Outfit to Date to the Coronation

Today the world’s gaze turns to London for the coronation of King Charles III and, whether you’re a royalist or not, May 6th 2023 will be a noteworthy date for the history books. It makes sense, then, that those in attendance would want to show up in serious style, what with all the photo documentation there will be of the event. Catherine, Princess of Wales? She’s no exception.

Last night Princess Kate, along with other senior members of the royal family, hosted a gathering for all of the world leaders who have flown in to attend the coronation, and if her outfit—a cobalt blue Self-Portrait dress with an elegant draped neckline—was anything to go by, we knew we'd be in for a treat. Naturally, Kate looked radiant as she stepped out of her car and onto the cobbles outside Westminster Abbey.

For the coronation, Kate looked every inch a royal princess. In her traditional regalia, which consisted of a floor-length blue cape, making it her signature colour for the coronation, underneath we can see but glimpses of what appears to be a sweeping white gown. In her hair she wears a stunning headpiece which is offset with stunning, pearl-drop earrings. Perfectly fitting for such a moment, wouldn't you agree?

The Princess of Wales oscillates between heels and trainers depending on the type of event she's attending. It's rare to see her in flats, but that's exactly what she wore yesterday for a visit to The Baby Bank charity in Windsor, which provides clothing and other essentials to families in need. Kate Middleton was on hand to learn about the charity's work, meet with employees, and bring attention to the worthy cause. 

For the event, she wore a pared-back outfit consisting of pieces from a few of our favourite elevated high-street brands: A Reiss blazer, L.K. Bennett slim trousers, Boden flats (which are currently sold out, but we're hoping for a restock), and Sézane earrings. And as always, Middleton's outfit nails the balance between polished and approachable. If, even after spotting peplum silhouettes in nearly every autumn/winter 2023 collection throughout fashion month, you're still not convinced that they're worth giving a second chance to, the news I'm about to share with you is bound to put you over the edge. After all, I've yet to come across a fashion item worn by Kate Middleton that didn't go absolutely viral, and no matter how controversial peplum is, the hatred around it doesn't come close to balancing out the influential abilities of the Princess of Wales. 

If you haven't already guessed, Middleton was spotted earlier today wearing a peplum Erdem blazer with a matching printed midi skirt at the 2023 Commonwealth Day Service held at Westminster Abbey in London, giving the once "out" trend a supersized push toward the "in" pile. With the two-piece navy-and-blue set, she wore matching Gianvito Rossi pumps, an Emmy London clutch, and a pair of double-drop diamond-and-sapphire earrings that were once owned by Princess Diana. 

Though her entire look was chic and glamorous—like most she's worn—I can't help but continue to go back to her peplum top and, more so, what it means for the trend's fate that she chose it for the occasion. I'm going to let you in on a little secret: Renting your clothes might be the absolute best thing you ever do. Why? Allow me to explain.

When you're tasked with finding a new dress for multiple weddings across spring, enamoured with a certain trend but reluctant to buy into it, quite simply in the market for a wardrobe refresh or want to become more sustainable in the way you shop, rental fashion has your back. Think of it as having the keys to your fashionable friend's wardrobe, with something for every style, event and season at your disposal. What's more, there's recently been a huge boom in the rental-fashion market, with GlobalData reporting that the industry will be valued at £2.3 billion by 2029 (it was valued at £1.4 billion in 2021), so it's not just us that is enamoured with the world of renting.

But with the industry growing and so many rental platforms out there (and more popping up daily), I know it can be quite overwhelming to figure out where to start. So I've done the hard work for you and curated the absolute best of the best when it comes to rental-fashion brands and divided them up into easy-to-shop categories. 1. Best for Unique Pieces: Curated Loop 

Curated Loop is the new kid on the block, launching only at the beginning of 2023. It prides itself on being a "rental platform championing brands' dead stock and previous-season collections." When browsing the site, I absolutely loved the range of sustainable and independent designers on show, some of whom I had never come across before. The variety of pieces was so broad, ranging from classic tailoring to corsets and '90s-inspired pieces. Curated Loop might be new to the crew, but I have a feeling it's going to be around for a long while yet. 

Style Notes: I really love the idea of being able to rent knitwear. My cupboard is quite literally overflowing with the pieces I choose to wear for a few months and then relegate to the back of the wardrobe, so this will definitely ensure I don't overspend on one-season wonders. Moving forward, I'll be looking to rent neutral, warm knitwear for the winter and chunky, bright knitwear for the spring.

If Curated Loop is the new kid on the block, Hurr is most definitely the current It girl. Rental fashion isn't all about renting clothes above your budget. The reason these rental brands have had such a ripple effect is due to the circular and sustainable future they are carving for the fashion industry by helping to reduce waste. 

Hirestreet prides itself on being a fashion rental platform committed to "making style and sustainability accessible for all women." Founded in 2018 by Isabella West, the idea came about from wanting to provide an alternative way to access fast fashion without contributing to waste. In fact, this week, she paired a monochromatic navy outfit and camel coat with a top-handle mini bag that perfectly complemented her look.

That, however, was proven not to be the case this evening as Kate Middleton attended the 76th British Academy Film Awards in what might just be her most daring outfit yet.

Opera-length might have been one of the most prevalent trends on the spring/summer 2023 runways, but in terms of copying-and-pasting them into our everyday outfits, chances to do so are generally quite limited. However, I was pleased to see that Middleton made the most of the opportunity to do so at this year's BAFTAs, the first she and her husband, Prince William, have attended since 2020, tackling the trend in a way we didn't expect. 

Directly contrasting her ethereal white one-shoulder chiffon gown, which I suspect is an Alexander McQueen creation she has worn previously but has brought up to date with a cascading drape, the Princess of Wales styled her could-be-bridal attire with long black opera gloves. Of course, we've seen her wearing such gloves at formal state banquets in the past, but the clash between the white and black feels incredibly striking and fashion-forward, even for someone like Kate who knows how to assemble an outfit. 

If that wasn't enough, Middleton finished her ensemble with a pair of oversize floral drop earrings, confirming that drama was certainly the goal of this evening's ensemble. Though I half expected them to come from a high-end label, knowing that Middleton loves a Zara find just like the rest of us, I should have known these were none other than the £18 shoulder-skimmers that I had considered snapping up for my own London Fashion Week outfits.
