On this brisk December evening, Manchester’s Northern quarter has been taken over by a slew of A-list celebrities, who have descended onto the northern city to witness Chanel’s annual Métiers d’Art showcase.

Dedicated to celebrating Chanel’s supreme craftspersonship and the artisans behind the brand, Chanel’s Métiers d’Art takes place every December in a different location. Gracing the Le19M in Paris last year, the show garnered guests including Lily-Rose Depp and Kristen Stewart.

This year, guests include Alexa Chung and Tilda Swinton who styled elegant tweed to the highly anticipated event. Set in one of the UK's cultural epicentres, guests rifted off the city's creativity, brining an experimental edge to the styling on their front row looks.

Unsurprisingly, there was a great deal of buzz around Karl Lagerfeld's final collection for Chanel, which was shown today at Paris Fashion Week, a mere two weeks after he passed away. In typical Karl style, the show was presented in Le Grand Palais which, for autumn/winter 19, was transformed into an Alpine wonderland, complete with snow-capped wood chalets, pine trees and skis. 

Flanked by a celeb-studded FROW, which included long-time Chanel ambassadors including Kirsten Stewart, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer, the show began with a one minute silence in honour of the design and branding genius before the models hit the runway. Chanel regulars, such as Cara and Kaia Gerber, alongside actress Penelope Cruz, stepped out in a host of Alpine-inspired designs, including Fair Isle knits, coloured puffa jackets, and then, for the finale, fluff-trimmed dresses and tailored monochrome separates. There were plenty of tears as the models hit the catwalk for the final time wearing Monsieur Lagerfeld's aesthetic.

As the daughter of Grace Kelly and a longtime friend/muse of the late Karl Lagerfeld, it's no surprise that Princess Caroline of Monaco has incredible style. Like many overlooked style icons, Princess Caroline has been consistently chic for decades, having attended fashion shows and red carpets in her teens with mum, becoming a Chanel muse in the '80s and then raising another royal style icon, her daughter Charlotte Casiraghi. From her front-row looks at fashion shows in the '80s to casual preppy outfits and royal gowns, her style has always been imbued with a sense of timeless cool. Style Notes: This casual look is a lesson in simplicity. From her canvas sneakers and white trousers to the cardigan and printed scarf, this is a head-to-toe classic. 

Style Notes: This is such a hip look for a young royal. I love how she's matched her mascara to her all-purple outfit, and the double-cuff bangles are the chicest styling trick.

Revered, adored and entirely inimitable in the truest sense of the word, Karl Lagerfeld's death at age 85 has the fashion world in mourning following the news. The iconic designer passed away in Paris following weeks of ill health, just a fortnight before the Chanel A/W 19 collection is due to show during Paris Fashion Week.

Arguably the world's most recognisable designer, Lagerfeld's legacy is nothing short of prolific. A man celebrated as a polymath, his creativity was boundless, his energy unbeatable by even the brightest young design talent, and his ability to stay ahead of the pulse in both pop culture and technology has long put many to shame. There are very few who could square up to his vision or knack for jettisoning a trend or key item into the stratosphere—be it a mass-market commercial concept or a high-brow haute couture one—and even fewer who could step up to the bar at Chanel following his long tenure as the creative lead since 1983. 

The tributes to his impeccable body of work, business acumen, generosity of spirit and sharp wit are now pouring in through publications across the globe (I would recommend reading the Business of Fashion's comprehensive obituary), and here we bring together some of the most heartfelt public posts from industry figures, including editors, stylists, fellow designers and more.

Many felt like they knew the man behind the sunglasses, such was his omnipresence, power and candid nature, and his is the kind of name—and signature personal style with the monochrome tailoring, gloves and powdered hair—that even those completely outside of fashion could instantly distinguish. His loss will be greatly felt, and our condolences go out to those who have worked with, loved and been close to and inspired by the legend.

Karl Lagerfeld really wants you to try gladiator sandals. How do we know this, you might ask? The designer just presented Chanel's Cruise 2018 show in Paris, and every single look was anchored by the iconic strappy shoe style.

From the backdrop to the clothes, the collection was rife with Greek references, including, of course, the shoes du jour. Chanel played with a host of different colours, creating gladiator sandals in black, gold, blue, orange, yellow, and more. If you don't want to commit to knee-high versions, don't fret: You can still test-drive the look with ankle iterations. We don't think Karl will mind.

One of Karl Lagerfeld’s closest friends, Lady Amanda Harlech, has put together an exhibition (March 28–September 13) in Bonn, Germany, focusing on the designer’s work process, but it appears that Lagerfeld will be avoiding it at all costs. “Karl Lagerfeld. Modemethode" (or "fashion method") may be an honour but, unfortunately, the designer finds any self-involved retrospectives appalling. Lagerfeld elaborated for WWD, saying:

“I don’t think it’s a good thing when you dive into your past… I think it’s interesting for people to see what I do, but I don’t have to go there because I know what I did, and sitting on your laurels means they stop growing.”

For Lagerfeld, it seems the future is all that’s worth "dwelling" on. Given his continual transformations of the house of Chanel, I can’t say I’m too surprised.

There is little I love more than a metallic polish—this is Hillary writing, FYI—and while I've been on a chrome silver or rose gold kick for the better part of 2013, for fall I'm all about this slightly odd metallic khaki green from Chanel. It's such an interesting neutral, plus I'm a sucker for a little sheen, and much like grey, it goes with nothing, so therefore it goes with everything! 

Club Monaco Ela Suede Moto Jacket ($695)

Clearly we're crazy about all things moto jacket for fall, and this one is definitely our crush du jour. The slightly, relaxed, lightly boxy cut is deceptively-flattering and the bright cobalt suede is simply a knockout.

You might have noticed that we've been paying a little more attention to the fellows lately—talking about how to style the man in your life, discussing the best dressed dudes—and it seems we're not the only ones. The geniuses behind one of our favourite e-commerce sites Shopbop are feeling the fellows too, and are launching a new menswear-shopping site, East Dane, this week. The site features a mix of new favourites (Alexander Wang) and beloved classics (Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots), plus styling tips and tricks, and we have a hunch the one-stop shop is going to make a really, really, really big splash.

Full disclosure: we've been full-tilt Julianne Hough supporters for a while now, so when she agreed to do a beauty shoot for our sister site Byrdie, there was some serious celebrating in the office. Our girl crush was game for trying a look that's more runway than red carpet—rainbow brite eye makeup, but done in a majorly gorgeous way—and looked incredible doing it. Some of us (ahem, Katherine), really, really, really love Prince. As in, name their cat after him, love him. So the fact that the purple high priest of funk is on Twitter now, well, suffice it to say, this is totally up our alley. His sense of humour shows too; Prince not only referenced a classic Chappelle’s Show line on Twitter recently, but he’s also using a photograph of Dave Chappelle, dressed as Prince, as the artwork for his new song "Breakfast Can Wait.” Well played, sir. Well played.

We might not be able to break out our fall coats for another few months, but we can start appropriating some of the season's key fabrics into our wardrobes via other ways, like Proenza Schouler's next-level furry clutch. The simple shape lets the unexpected material really stand out, plus who can resist a textured accessory? Not us, not now.

Dior Nail Earrings ($440) In Palladium

Dior is killing it right now for us, on basically every level. While we might not have big enough budgets to splurge on the entire collection, the incredible silver earrings from the brand's F/W 13 campaign are a bit more attainable and will add the right amount of polish to any outfit.

The World According To Karl ($30)

Though it doesn't technically come out until mid-September, this book is already creating a buzz in our office. Karl Lagerfeld is wildly quotable—"Think pink. But don't wear it."—and we have a feeling this is going to be on our gifts to give list come the holidays. 

Bridget Hall for Prabal Gurung Fall 13 Digital Campaign

While the latest crop of models are certainly on our radar, we'll always have a soft spot for the girls who have been a part of our collective consciousness for years, which is why we're so pleased that Prabal Gurung cast the incomparable Bridget Hall in his F/W 13 digital campaign. The 35-year-old Dallas, Texas-raised model has been one of our favourites since she burst onto the scene nearly two decades ago, and as these images prove, she's only getting better.
