I am a firm believer in investing in beautiful pieces for your wardrobe that will not only bring you joy but also last you from season to season. When we think of investment buys, it's often items with a large price tag that come to mind, as well as classically chic designers such as Celine, Totême and The Row, to name a few. These brands are well-known for their timeless cuts and shapes, and they tend to stick to a muted colour palette, too. While I can appreciate the beauty of such pieces, as you may well already know, my style is far from minimalist, so for me, an investment buy isn't always restricted to a beautifully cut black blazer or camel coat. I believe investment pieces can be statement pieces, too, which is why some of my most stand-out dresses and bags are also some of my oldest and most loved.

Over the years, I have picked up some essential tips on what to look out for when searching for those expensive-looking gems that are affordable, too. Each season, I always look out for certain pieces on the great British high street that I know are versatile winners, such as sequinned blazers and dresses, simple leather trousers and elevated jewellery. Then, I head to the brands that I know really excel in each area. If you’re looking for designer-style coats that are a bit friendlier on your wallet, my go-to is Mango or Massimo Dutti. When it comes to premium party wear, & Other Stories always delivers. Whenever I wear Zara jewellery, I always get asked where it’s from. And finally, Arket is guaranteed to be at the top of my wish list for footwear forever more.

1. Mango Faux-Shearling Jacket

Style Notes: Faux-shearling jackets can be a bit hit-or-miss, but when I saw this Mango one in-store, I quickly picked one up to try on. Now, trust me when I say that the imagery on the Mango website really doesn't do it justice, because it is completely amazing. Mango has somehow managed to get the outer fabric to look like real leather (it is faux), and I sized up to an XL to get that oversized high-end biker jacket look. I'm in love!

Style Notes: I haven't bought a floral dress in a while, as lately, I've struggled to find one that would work through the winter and didn't require a cardigan or extra layer. Enter this gorgeous long-sleeved pink number. This floral dress from & Other Stories fits like a glove and has a beautiful ruched detail and a devoré fabric. Dress it up or down depending on your plans this season.

Style Notes: I have to admit I have been almost obsessively scouring the high street for the best cashmere this season, as I always feel the cold and want to invest in knitwear that will last for more than a season. What I've learnt on my travels is this: The store that comes out on top, every time, is COS. They're still an investment at just under £200, but the weight and thickness of the cashmere are unrivalled at this price point. This beige colour is timeless.

Oh, autumn. In my personal opinion, it's the best time of year for fashion. The beautiful colour palettes, layering options and reach-out-and-touch-me textures all come together to create a potent blend of wardrobe goodness that I find impossible to resist. And now, with autumn just days away (the season officially kicks in on 22 September), I'm more than ready to bid farewell to the sandals and linen dresses of summer and bring my autumn staples to the front of my rails and drawers.

According to the great British weather system, it’s time we started thinking about autumn, like, stat. Okay we may have a few more sporadic warm weeks ahead but the new season collections are starting to trickle in and the cooler days are well and truly arriving— and we’re not mad about it. Ask most of us on the Who What Wear UK team and we’ll tell you that autumn is our favourite season to dress for. The layering, the rich colour tones, the trench coats… honestly, does it get any better? 

Don’t get us wrong, we can appreciate the ease of throwing on a great dress in summer as much as the next person. But once you’ve cracked your autumn capsule wardrobe— we mean truly, wholeheartedly nailed it— we’d go so far as to say dressing for fall is just as simple. Of course, everyone’s own capsule will differ depending on personal taste but in general we’re talking timeless coats, luxe leathers, crisp shirting, layering knits, chic tailoring and some very, very good boots. It’s getting us excited for September just thinking about it.

Ask most of the Who What Wear team, and they'll tell you that autumn is their favourite season to dress for. While it's always been on our style radar, we've become increasingly impressed by Karen Millen over the past few seasons, and right now, the designs are slicker than ever. As such, we check its new-in section daily to ensure we don't miss any gems. In doing so this week, we found its newly launched Pre-Fall 2021 collection, which we reckon is already a contender for the title as the strongest Karen Millen collection in history. 

With the moniker Taking Back the City, the collection is designed to broaden your style horizons beyond loungewear and staying at home. There's no doubt about it—this is clothing to be seen in. A blend of beautiful dresses splashed in everything from geometric prints and vivid hues to sleek separates in quieter colours but daring silhouettes, this edit has a boldness akin to what we'd expect from a designer runway lineup. Highlights for us include the pintuck blouse with blown-up sleeves, the tangerine-and-oxblood geo minidress with a preppy zip collar and the striking red trouser suit with origami-inspired folds. It's just all so premium-looking. 

While Karen Millen isn't the lowest-priced in the fashion ether, for pieces of this design quality, they're significantly more affordable than you'd expect to pay elsewhere. The saying "you get what you pay for" exists for a reason. Still, perhaps the thing we love most about Karen Millen's Pre-Fall 2021 collection is how inclusive it is. Karen Millen is one of the few brands out there giving its Curve category—which includes sizing up to a UK 26—the same stylish consideration as its mainline collection. And this capsule is no exception. With everything from leather skirts to elegant jumpsuits and some of the best dresses we've seen for a long while, we think Karen Millen Pre-Fall is going to appeal to a lot of women out there. After months of grey British days that predominantly involved practical layers, comfy trackies, and that all-important puffer coat, it’s finally time to start looking ahead and thinking about spring clothes. Tailoring is at the forefront, something the brand has been known for doing so well over the years. But today it comes in a more relaxed form: comfortable enough for working from home yet smart enough to take you (hopefully) back into the office at some point.
