We’ve watched her redefine "courtside chic" for years, but stepping into the role of Met Gala cochair this year took her style game to a whole new arena. Every detail was a deliberate nod to "Body of Science," Gatorade's just-launched multiyear global research initiative, which is bringing attention to the lack of research dedicated specifically to women’s bodies. It’s a subtle reminder that while we’ve mastered the aesthetic of the female form, we’re still catching up on the science behind it.

Before the big event, we connected with Venus Williams to chat about following in her sister Serena's footsteps as cochair, conquering Met Gala–day nerves, and why her bespoke jewelry was the ultimate power play on fashion's biggest night of the year.

What was your initial reaction upon being asked to be a cochair this year? Did Serena give you any advice from her time as cochair in 2019?

My initial reaction was, honestly, oh my gosh, yay! There was celebration, disbelief, and a lot of gratitude to have even been considered. I don’t think anyone ever feels worthy of being a cochair of the Met, so it was an incredible feeling. I remember being immensely proud when my sister was cochair, so I know she feels the same about me. I’m still in disbelief; it’s one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had. I’m planning on enjoying the whole experience.

Tell me about your Met Gala jewelry.

My accessories on Monday night are all custom pieces, and they're really designed to bring to life that only 6% of global sports science research focuses exclusively on the female body. Every detail was thoughtfully crafted to connect back to the Body of Science story in a way that feels cohesive and expressive.

How did Body of Science inspire your Met Gala jewelry and looks for the other Met moments?

We crafted looks together that were really meant to call attention to the women’s sports science research problem, including my pre-gala dinner look, the press preview event look, and, of course, my accessories for Monday night. I really wanted each look to tell an individual story on its own, while together telling a bigger story about the power of female bodies and the need to better understand them.

Why is working with Gatorade a good fit for you? What are they working on that excites you?

As an athlete, Gatorade has obviously always been there throughout my career. They have always led from the front when it comes to investing in women’s sports and pushing the ball forward, and when they came to me about Body of Science and being a meaningful part of the solution, it was an easy yes.

Congratulations on your recent wedding! What's more nerve-racking: walking down the aisle or walking up the Met Gala steps, and why?

Walking up the Met Gala stairs will definitely be more nerve-racking for me. I’m naturally quite shy, even if it doesn’t always come across. I’ve always been deeply introverted. Though I’ve grown into more of an "extroverted introvert" over time. That’s why this moment feels a little more daunting. Walking down the aisle felt completely natural. I already knew I wanted to marry my husband, so there were no nerves.

How has the sports science research gap impacted your career? Why is female-specific sports science data important in tennis and other sports?

When Gatorade was first sharing Body of Science, I guess I wasn’t surprised, but was obviously a little frustrated that I spent decades optimizing my fitness and wellness to be the best on the court, and realizing it wasn’t optimized for me. It’s so important for women to have information, resources, and education catered to us and our unique needs, and I’m excited that the next generation of female tennis players, as well as females across life stages, will have better, science-backed data to make decisions about their bodies. People keep asking, “What’s next for women’s sports?” and I think this is a huge part of it.

Vintage fashion has been trending for decades, but lately, there has been a surge in people shopping secondhand luxury pieces, specifically designer bags and pre-loved jewellery. Why? Well, I believe there are several reasons. Firstly, the number of resale sites we have that make it easy to sell and shop secondhand, including Vinted, Depop, Vestiaire and eBay, has made sourcing retro designer pieces more accessible than ever. Then, there's the added appeal of owning a rare gem, especially in the world of fast fashion and algorithm-dictated ads, where everyone on your feed can be wearing the same £30 piece within days of one another.

Vintage accessories can also be more affordable than purchasing new designer jewellery, especially as the prices of gold, silver and diamonds have recently spiked. Plus, designer vintage pieces are often better quality than their modern counterparts; some luxury brands have stopped using high-quality metals in favour of plated alternatives to reduce production costs, though that's not reflected in the hefty price tag. In fact, quite the opposite...

Ever ahead of the curve, Gucci has tapped into this demand for vintage designer jewellery and re-released a timeless piece from its '80s archives, but with a modern twist. Enter the Gucci Play Watch.

What Is the Gucci Play Watch?

Playful by name and nature, it boasts interchangeable faces, which is a unique design feature to encourage self-expression and creativity. The Gucci Play Watch has taken the original concept of the '80s Bezel Play Watch and reimagined it through a contemporary lens. In other words, it's had a few design modifications over the past 40 years, as well as a whopping £2000 price increase.

How do I know this? Well, my generous mum gifted me her original, which my dad bought her one Christmas in the early '80s for under £200. Suffice to say, it would be near impossible to find a luxury designer watch for that price now, even on resale sites.

What Are the Differences Between the 2026 Gucci Play Watch and the Original '80s Design?

The new-generation Gucci Play Watch honours the debut creation. It features a bangle-like strap, round face and interchangeable bezels, much like the '80s classic. However, there are subtle differences. The new version boasts a slightly larger face that measures 28mm, a thicker strap with hinges to make it easier to slip onto the wrist, whereas the original has a fixed slimline bangle. The fastening has also been modified; the click-ball back replaces the classic hook closure.

The gold-plated stainless-steel watch still features the distinct interchangeable bezel faces. However, the material has been refined; it's now made of durable ceramic rather than the former featherlight—yet fragile—acrylic. The new faces have a slight pearlescent shimmer, whereas the original bezels are a bold opaque colour.

Whilst we're on the topic of faces, the new iteration of the Gucci Play Watch has fewer bezels (seven instead of the original 11). Thanks to my mum's safekeeping, I know the original included white, black, lilac, deep purple, light blue, navy blue, burgundy, yellow, pink and red, as well as Gucci's signature green with a red-stripe bezel. The new version only includes the signature green-and-red stripe, as well as block green, red, black, white, lilac and navy blue.

The History of the Gucci Play Watch

Fast forward 40 years from the first launch, and Gucci officially re-released the Play Watch in November 2025, thanks to rising demand for the original. The timepiece was designed to be delicate and playful, and the interchangeable colourful bezels were revolutionary. This distinct feature made the watch a popular design of its time, and it still is, decades later. The hybrid design also bucked tradition, as the bangle strap resembles a bracelet, blurring the lines between functionality and style, although this same multifunctionality is a huge jewellery trend.

1. What Was the Inspiration Behind the Newest Collection?

"This collection was inspired by a feeling more than anything else. That moment when you feel most like yourself. Over the years, my collections with Daisy have naturally shaped into this effortless, quietly confident aesthetic, and with the seventh collection, I wanted pieces that felt considered and personal, the kind of jewellery you don’t want to take off because it just feels like home. This collection is a continuation of the story we’ve been telling from the very beginning—timeless heirlooms that evolve with you, that you collect, cherish, and live your life in."

2. What Was the Design Process Like?

"The design process is honestly one of my favourite parts of working with Daisy, and after seven years together, it still feels just as exciting! Ruth Bewsey and the whole Daisy team really listen to me. We’ve built a rhythm over the years where the ideas flow so naturally, and there’s a genuine respect for each other’s instincts.

From the very first brainstorm session all the way through to the photoshoots, we laugh a lot, we obsess over the smallest details, and we’re all equally invested in creating pieces that feel intentional and true to who I am. Every collection becomes a shared labour of love, and this one in particular felt really seamless!"

3. Which Piece in the Collection is Your Favourite and Why?

"So hard to choose! Firstly, I’m completely obsessed with the Jewellery Case - something we haven’t done before as part of my collaboration with Daisy. It’s absolutely beautiful, the kind of jewellery storage you actually want to keep on display. It sold out in the first few weeks, but luckily had a restock just before Christmas. When it comes to jewellery, I've found that people tend to fall into the maximalist or minimalist camp, either preferring elaborate statement earrings and rings on every finger, or simple layers of chain necklaces and a curated assortment of studs. As a self-identified minimalist, I thought I needed to limit my options to gold or silver, with no gemstones or colour. But ever since I heard the line "Frost yourself" in How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, I've had diamonds on the brain. And over the past year or so, I've noticed more and more people sporting diamonds, in delicate or OTT form. It seems that the gemstone, once only associated with engagement rings or evening glamour, has now become a daytime staple.

As a fashion editor, I’m often asked the same questions. "What should I wear to this event?", "What accessories go with that dress?", "How can I look expensive without breaking the bank?" You get the idea. There are two pieces of styling advice that I hand out time and again, and luckily for you, I don’t gatekeep.

Style Notes: This look is all about more elevated holiday dressing. Perhaps it’s a wedding abroad, a special dinner out or in this case, cocktails by the pool during golden hour. My look is usually a bit more… extroverted, shall we say, so I’ve removed some of the additional pieces used for layering and swapped my earrings so there isn’t too much going on. In my ears are the Charlotte Bold Hoops, which make more of an impact than the slimmer hoops I wore for the previous look, but again, aren’t too overpowering.

As I want to achieve a more classic look here, I’ve removed a bracelet and the zodiac necklace (which Hannah is wearing instead), and added this Pavé Diamond Ring to elevate the look to feel a little more evening-ready. Hannah, who is more of a minimalist when it comes to accessorising, is wearing the stunning Ziggy Ring and the Brioche Hoops (both in gold) alongside her Gemini pendant.

Style Notes: Full disclosure: I’m not a great tennis player. But just because I don’t play so well, doesn't mean I won’t dress the part (all the gear, and all that!). Whilst I may be a seasonal tennis player, I’m a highly active person, walking my dogs daily, running and going to gym classes on my lunch break. If for no other reason than ease, I seek out jewellery I don’t need to take off, like earrings I can wear for work and play and necklaces that don’t hit me in the face when I’m moving about. Also, there’s something so effortlessly cool about a sporty look with a few jewellery accents.

As we approach Wimbledon, the marker of tennis season in the UK, I really wanted to style some classic tennis pieces. The sterling silver Zadie Bezel tennis necklace features lab-grown sapphires, which, like the matching bracelet I’m also wearing, sparkle when they hit the light. Tennis bracelets and necklaces are quite traditional, so I wanted this look to feel a little more casual and "athleisure". To do this, I’ve layered the necklace with two other chains: the silver Serpentine (one of my most-worn Mejuri styles) and the Boyfriend Bold Chain Necklace. This is aptly named, because I’m often borrowing my husband’s jewellery (in fact, his wedding band is Mejuri). Because I’ve layered a few necklaces, I’ve gone more minimal on my ears, wearing the sterling silver Chunky Medium Hoops—a classic.

Style Notes: Wimbledon is a huge moment in the sporting (and let’s be honest, social) calendar. It’s definitely a reason to dress up, but unlike other events like Ascot, you don’t need to overdress. This gingham two-piece is perfect; it’s short and sweet, and the check print feels apt for this time of year. I’m wearing a lot of the same jewellery, but it feels completely different when worn this way.

Wanting to achieve something more pared-back and classic, I’ve removed the two chains and kept the Zadie tennis style on my wrist and neck. I love the shorter length of this necklace; it feels elegant, almost like an alternative to a pearl choker. "I'm not shocked [at the trend's momentum], as this piece is truly something special and looks great on everyone."

Style Notes: Whilst resin and acrylic bangels have emerged as one of the most in-demand summer microtrends, a chunky bangle is more enduring. "Sculptural designs," according to Whiting, are one of the year's biggest trends, encompassing the organic, anatomically-inspired shapes of Tiffany & Co.'s Elsa Peretti Bone Cuff to the fluid forms of Saint Laurent's high jewellery.

"With my background in architecture, I am normally drawn to very graphic references," Whiting says. "I'm anticipating a renewed interest in natural-coloured gemstones and diamonds, particularly those that are truly one of a kind," she tells me.

"This includes diamonds with unique or speciality cuts, warmer tones such as champagnes and light yellows and genuine antique diamonds that carry rarity and character. There will also be a continued move towards full traceability for natural diamonds, from mine to market, a shift driven by consumers seeking authenticity and uniqueness."

Style Notes: Forget everything you've ever been told. Mixed metals are not only "in" but also desirable. This season, there are "no dos or don’ts," Mance affirms. What Is the Tiffany & Co. Bone Cuff?

The Tiffany & Co Bone Cuff is a bracelet moulded out of metal. It was designed to follow the natural contours of the body, imbuing the piece with a sort of carnal sensuality courtesy of its innate curves and sleek undulation. The initial concept was a gilded bangle that hugged the forearm, which gave your look a sort of militant stature, considering how dominating the piece was. At the time, Peretti intended for the wearer to decorate both wrists with the Bone Cuff, styling them as a pair.

These days, there are a lot of iterations of the Bone Cuff. In 2024, Tiffany & Co. introduced new shapes to the lineup to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Elsa Perretti's relationship working with the brand. These special anniversary designs included rare versions set with pavé diamonds.

There are three key styles of the Bone Cuff, which are small, medium and large sizes, respectively. The small is 43 millimetres wide and asymmetrically shaped, while the medium version is 61 millimetres wide and features a more distinct ridge along with that distinct hump. The large is more recognisable, offered at a 95-millimetre width and a split that runs through the middle.

To Chelsea Fairless, the Los Angeles-based tastemaker, author and co-host of the legendary fashion and pop-cultural commentary podcast Every Outfit, the Bone Cuff is more than a piece of jewellery, but rather a “classic design object, like an Eames chair. It’s utterly timeless, yet so synonymous with the glamour of the ‘70s, Halston and Studio 54 and all that".

How Did Elsa Perretti Design the Tiffany & Co. Bone Cuff?

As the story goes, Peretti drew inspiration from a rather macabre source: A Capuchin crypt in Rome she visited as a child. The memory of coming close to the skeletal remains of thousands of deceased monks and friars was haunting, yes, but as Peretti herself quipped in one of her more famous quips, “things that are forbidden remain with you forever”.

Antoni Gaudí, the Catalan architect who designed some of Barcelona’s most significant examples of the Art Nouveau movement, like the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, is also quoted as a reference source. Not only do these two elements reflect Peretti’s interest in transforming the mundane, but represent who she was as an artist herself. For the uninitiated, Peretti was born in Florence before she moved to Spain and ultimately to New York, where she lived and worked as a model before turning her hand to jewellery.

It’s this transient essence that defines the Bone Cuff as its ease of wear is what drew the bohemian and free-spired starlets of the day to the piece. It’s also what Fairless first identified with the piece.

“My formative bone cuff memories are all tied to Liza Minnelli, who I idolised as a child,” she says. “Apart from Elsa herself, Liza is most synonymous with the Bone Cuff. She wore them at Studio 54. She wore them in many of her most iconic portraits. She wore them on the cover of Interview a few months ago. To me, Liza is the ultimate style icon, and the cuffs are integral to her look.”

On the design, Minelli herself once told Vanity Fair: “Elsa brought out all these things—the Bone [bracelet] I remember best. Everything was so sensual, so sexy. I just loved it. It was different from anything I’d ever seen, and I’d seen a lot. I’ve only really worn Peretti jewellery from then on”.

Why Is the Tiffany & Co. Bone Cuff So Iconic?

The Bone Cuff garnered a wide and warm reception upon its release, springing up on the arms of Grace Jones and Sophia Loren. It was entirely different to anything on the market, curiously shaped, unassuming yet captivating and, integrally, made out of silver which was a rather disregarded material of the time. (It was also entirely made by hand from solid pieces of sterling silver when it first entered the market.)

Like many iconic jewellery pieces, its enduring appeal can be chalked up to its timeless design. It doesn't bend to the style du jour or distinctly align itself with niche aesthetics or micro trends, surviving the shift in what’s popular in fashion for half a century.

“Peretti was able to create an extraordinary universe of groundbreaking designs that changed the course of Tiffany’s history and continues to resonate to this day,” Tiffany & Co.’s President and CEO, Anthony Ledru, said in a statement in 2024. More specifically, it’s not a super obvious design, meaning that its convertibility lies with a more exclusive set of people who know its history—and, therefore, its impact.

In 2016, Margot Robbie helped reintroduce the design to a new generation of luxury shoppers when she wore it to the 2016 Met Gala. Of course, those with a keen eye would’ve seen it crop up in both Sex And the City films on the arms of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). As Fairless points out about these co-signs, “Even fictional It girls love a Bone Cuff!”

More recently, you’ll find the Bone Cuff worn by discerning minimalists like Elsa Hosk, Jasmine Tookes and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, though it’s increasingly becoming more of a cult item among younger shoppers. In the last 30 days alone, searches for the Tiffany & Co. Bone Cuff have increased by 110%. But will this make it the next cult item?

With endorsements from celebrities and the fact the Bone Cuff has been permanently enshrined in popular culture, has its mainstream visibility impacted its appeal? “Celebrities wear it because it’s a classic and versatile piece, not because it’s particularly trendy,” Fairless argues. “I have yet to see them really catch on with celebrities or the masses in the way that the Cartier Love Bracelet has, for example. I hope they never become that popular!
