As a shopping editor, hunting for expensive-looking buys is a key part of my daily routine. Often, I find these after hours of scrolling through the new-in sections, sometimes through suggestions from fellow editors and friends and very occasionally, my favourite phenomenon occurs: a series of stylish people are spotted in the same item, and that's exactly how I came to fall for the J.Crew Palermo Dress in Crinkle (£165).

With the arrival of summer, our feeds and city streets are awash with pretty dresses. For most of us, the high temperatures call for easy dressing, and a dress rises to the occasion every single time. As someone who is slowly curating their dress collection, a great dress, in my eyes, has a specific set of features. First, a throw-on appeal that requires little to no styling; simply a bag and sandals to feel incredibly put-together. Second, a comfortable silhouette that can work for everyday as well as evening plans. And finally, design details that set it apart from the rest. The Palermo easily ticks these boxes.

It's clear to see why so many stylish people have been drawn to this dress. It comes in three shades: a classic black, fresh white and playful blue. With a ruffled neckline, sweet bow tie and elegant V neck on both the front and back, there's an innate sophistication to the design that appeals to daily strolls or dinners out with the swap of a sandal for a mule. Delicate sleeves offer a touch of coverage, and there's a relaxed feeling through the crinkled material. Both timeless and romantic, it's a piece that can easily go from city to seaside, and is sure to feel just as contemporary in many years, making it a smart addition to any summer wardrobe.

I first learned of Olympia Gayot, J.Crew's head of women's design, through TikTok. No, not her own account, but a viral video by Caitlin Murphy, who said she hasn't "felt this passionate about J.Crew since the Jenna Lyons days" and described Gayot as the "new fashion icon we all need to know." Hundreds of TikTokers agreed and geeked out on Gayot's personal style in the comments section. "Same[.] I haven't gone in five years and now I'm checking their website every week," one comment read. Now if that isn't proof that Gayot is doing something right at J.Crew, I don't know what is.

Naturally, I jumped at the chance to interview Gayot herself and get her expert insight on the best summer 2022 trends to try right now. Scroll down to see how she personally styles the trends on Instagram and shop the J.Crew pieces she's loving. 

1. Denim-on-Denim

"Denim-on-denim is always a staple for me, all seasons," Gayot told Who What Wear. "Slight proportion shifts and interesting accessories can really pop on a denim-on-denim look. I love our denim chore jacket and the '90s classic straight jeans in white. (Insider tip: I buy the jeans in tall to get the extra few inches to wear with little heels. They also make your legs look long that way!) Pairing white with black or colored accessories adds a sharpness to the look. Plus, denim and gold look great together, so I’m always layering up my gold jewellery like cuffs and rings to add some dimension to the look."

2. Gladiator Sandals

"One of my go-to summer outfits is a striped shirt, linen shorts, and gladiator sandals, paired with a straw bag and gold jewellery," Gayot told me. "This outfit exudes effortless style, but is also classic and is so easy to style."

3. Rope Bags

"One of my favorite pieces right now is the Cadiz hand-knotted rope tote in Tea Rose that I use quite frequently and can pair with so many outfits. Honestly, I have this bag in multiple colors. It looks good with everything."

4. Timeless Classics

"The whole point of classics is that they will never go out of style, and J.Crew is synonymous with pieces that you will wear season after season, every year. The design team is constantly refining the classics to make sure the proportions feel modern. Clothes do have personality if you can believe it, and these small tweaks can make a big difference."

"For example," she continued, "giving the relaxed-fit shirt just the amount of oversize shape that it reads cool but still flattering for example is something we work on constantly, and makes all of the difference in your experience of wearing it. Also taking a classic fabric like linen and putting it in a bloomer shape gives new life to a very iconic 'coastal grandmother' fabric.”

5. Mid-Length Denim Shorts

"Overall, I'm loving denim for the summer," Gayot told Who What Wear. "Mid-length denim shorts are such a versatile item in my summer wardrobe and feel fresh again even though they've actually been around for decades. They give that effortless sensibility that is both comfortable and cool. I pair them with little strappy heels and a summer blouse for that '70s casual femme chic look."

6. Pops of Color

"Summer is the perfect time of year to go for a pop of color if you're not otherwise inclined, and our summer collection has some very special bold hues. Incorporating bright colors into your outfits is one of the easiest ways to bring in a fresh perspective and create that wow factor. I particularly like to play with simple shapes in bright colors. The impact is strong. I also love to layer shades of the same color family together.

"I wear our cupro tea rose slip constantly. I have different sweaters and cardigans I wear with it—thrown over my shoulders, around my waist, and even with my favorite trench coat in the rain. The simplicity of the shape and the impact of the color gives an effortless yet emotional feeling. I also love our cupro suit in chartreuse which just launched. The silhouette is so effortless but strong, and the color is extremely unique. I wore it to an event last week and I felt great in it."

In our fantasy fashion world, we imagine Kate and Pippa Middleton and Meghan Markle all have a group chat where the three of them discuss what they might wear to a major event and maybe even conspire what to get the queen for her birthday. We like to assume, in some way, that they’re just like us.

We talk a lot here at Who What Wear about what is acceptable to wear to the office—how to make sure you look professional, can nail an interview, and won't horrify your boss. But figuring out how to look professional while not coming across as boring or too conservative is a tougher nut to crack.

To figure it out, we enlisted the help of masterful celebrity stylists Emily Current and Meritt Elliott, who shared three ways to make it work.

Think a big watch or a chunky chain necklace.

Think layered simple chains, lockets, initial necklaces, and thin piles of ID bracelets. Then add little stud earrings mixed with small stones.

Stay away from big shine or sparkle. Bling is much better for when you're going out!

There might be some modern trends that folks of yore could never have envisioned—people really wear sneakers with dresses, to dinner?!—but there are a few holdovers from the Golden Age that are still kickin’. First and foremost: the classical system of labelling invites to events with certain dress codes. For us modern women, this ancient system of codes can be quite confusing—after all, we’re used to wearing our sneakers to dinner!

To help you navigate the landmine that is black tie, creative black tie, business formal, and beyond, we’ve deconstructed the 10 most oft-used dress codes for you. You’ll never wonder what to wear to any event ever again!

A black-tie event is the epitome of a formal event. Cocktail-length dresses are only allowed if they are extremely dressy and sleek.

What To Wear: A formal, floor-length gown is preferred. Also allowed: a dressy cocktail dress or your best LBD paired with fancier jewellery, which will elevate the overall look.

A black-tie-optional event is still dressy, but not as strict. In other words, you can wear a formal evening gown, but no one will look at you twice if you choose to wear a cocktail dress.

What To Wear: A formal floor-length evening gown, fancier cocktail dress, a tux-style pantsuit, or LBD.

This is a professional look that isn’t overly dressy. Think: something you could definitely wear to the office (i.e., on the conservative side) but would feel comfortable wearing to grab a work drink.

What To Wear: An open-collar shirt or sweater, with a pencil skirt or trousers. You can also wear a dress, as long as it’s not provocative.

Imagine what you would wear if you were giving a very important presentation at work. That’s essentially how you should dress for a business casual event.

What To Wear: A tailored, polished dress with a blazer, or a pantsuit. Whatever you wear, style it with appropriate heels. This is not the time for flats or super-high club shoes.

Your average brunch look.

What To Wear: A skirt (either long or short) and plain tee, nice jeans with a button-down blouse, or a cotton sundress. Flats are fine.

Mother Denim

Think: black tie with some breathing room. Still formal and dressy, but with a smidge of playfulness thrown in.

What To Wear: A dressy cocktail dress, floor-length evening gown, or LBD, plus fun and unique accessories.

Think: Olivia Palermo on just about any given day. A look that is casual, but not at all lazy or frumpy.

What To Wear: A dressy blouse with jeans and heels, a skirt and top set, a crisp pantsuit, or a dress. Flats are acceptable as long as they are not overtly casual (i.e., no sneakers).

As the name suggests, a semiformal event is just that: semi formal. It’s certainly still dressy, but not as much so as a black-tie-optional event.

What To Wear: A cocktail dress, LBD, floor-length skirt and blouse in appropriate fabrics, like silk, or dressy separates. You can also wear a long dress if you wish.

This is the most extravagant of all the dress codes—perhaps that’s why this year’s Met Gala utilised it. Think: full ball gown, elbow-length gloves, and all your best jewellery.

What To Wear: A floor-length evening gown (mandatory), gloves (optional), and your best jewellery. Your dress should incorporate luxe fabrications, like lace, silk, and chiffon. 

As the name suggests, this is a dressy event that is still meant to be primarily social and enjoyable.

What To Wear: A cocktail dress (obviously), LBD, or a shorts suit in more formal fabrications, plus a sleek pair of heels. Flats are not recommended, but can work in certain situations.

Summer is coming to an end (sadly), which means you're probably almost done with your summer internship. By now you’re a pro at getting your assignments done and are rather comfortable in the work environment – maybe a little too comfortable. To make sure you leave a lasting impression, some of Who What Wear's staffers offered up valuable advice on how to stand out and be more memorable.
