Saoirse Ronan has been one of my all-time favourite actresses for a while now, starring in films like Atonement (which got her an Oscar nomination in 2008 at the age of 13), Lady Bird, Little Women, and Ammonite throughout her 20-year-long career. Come to think of it, I can't remember a picture starring the Irish-American 30-year-old that I didn't adore. That said, it wasn't until a few weeks ago that I first took serious notice of what she's been doing off-screen, or rather, what she's been wearing.

Ronan is currently doing press for her latest project, The Outrun, a drama based on British journalist Amy Liptrot's 2015 memoir that came out on October 4, and every look she's debuted on it has been as big of a hit as I'm sure the film will be. Included were two off-the-runway looks from the just-wrapped-up S/S 25 season, a deconstructed barn jacket from Hodakova's F/W 25 collection, and my personal favourite, a resort 25 Ferragamo ensemble that I wish I was wearing right this second (and throughout the remainder of autumn and winter).

The brains behind all of these looks? Well, that would be Danielle Goldberg, the same celebrity stylist who's responsible for dressing Ayo Edebiri, Greta Lee, Kaia Gerber, Laura Harrier, Olivia Rodrigo, and Solange Knowles, to name a few. She has access to the best pieces by the best designers, often dressing Edebiri in the latest by The Row and Prada, Gerber in new Alaïa, and Rodrigo in vintage Versace and Chanel. Harrier's always set up in Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, while Lee, a Loewe ambassador, is often fitted with the Spanish house's most sought-after runway pieces.

"Working with my stylist, Danielle Goldberg—I've learned so much from her," Harrier told Who What Wear US's Editor in Chief Kat Collings on the Who What Wear Podcast in July. The two met years ago when Harrier was modelling and Goldberg was an editorial stylist. On the set of one shoot, Harrier recalls telling Goldberg that she wanted to become an actress and when she made it, she'd hire Goldberg as her stylist. "My publicist when I was on Spiderman was like, 'We should start thinking about a stylist and how you want to go about this,' and she named a few people," Harrier says. Goldberg, who had never done celebrity styling before, was on the list. "I was like, 'Oh, of course, that's meant to be.' And then we reconnected and are super close, and that's kind of been it ever since," Harrier says.

Today, Goldberg is one of Hollywood's most respected stylists, and her clients always find themselves at the top of every best-dressed list there is—whether they're on the streets of Los Angeles, Paris, New York, or London, or a red carpet.

With all that being said, it should come as a surprise to no one that Ronan partnering up with Goldberg has almost immediately brought her looks to the attention of the fashion world and beyond. On TikTok, videos have begun popping up on my FYP all about Ronan's style transformation since she started working with Goldberg, with creator @hannahzookpop calling the seemingly overnight switch "so satisfying" in a video posted this week that already has close to a million views. "Danielle Goldberg is really gonna take her there," she continued.

On a photo posted by Goldberg of Ronan wearing an off-the-runway S/S 25 JW Anderson blue minidress with Gianvito Rossi pumps and Oliver Peoples sunglasses for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, fashion editors ran to the comment section to praise the stylist's work. "I love that you can always [tell] when you start styling someone. It's always the coolest designers and they always look like the best version of themselves. Obsessed," wrote Tahirah Hairston, Teen Vogue's former fashion and beauty director. New York stylist and former Vogue editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson summed it up perfectly in her comment: "Well, yes."

The Outrun came out this week, and Goldberg and Ronan just started working together, leaving me to believe that the best is yet to come for this duo. It's easy to fall into the trap of associating an actor's style (or even personality) with the character they play on television. In the case of Emma Corrin and her spot-on portrayal of Princess Diana in the latest season of The Crown, I'd been guilty of doing just that. To steal the popular adage from Miranda Priestly, chain detailing doesn't seem like the most groundbreaking concept when it comes to accessory trends. After all, chains have been used as functional straps on handbags for several decades.

But when it comes to the chain embellishments of 2020, we have to say, they are definitely something to write home about. This season, the humble chain detail has been given an upgrade, and yes we mean that quite literally. Supersized and placed on shoes, jewellery and clothing, chains have gone from simply being a practical addition on an accessory to becoming a statement-making detail in and of themselves. 

From JW Anderson to Bottega Veneta, oversize chains appeared across the runway for A/W 2020—placed atop loafers, around ankle straps and woven within knitwear—making the detail one to look out for this season. Tiffany Hsu, fashion buying director at MyTheresa, agrees. "Chain-link jewellery has been in the spotlight for some time now, but this season, the trend gets bigger—literally and figuratively," Hsu explained. "In Milan, Bottega Veneta presented chunky chain necklaces reminiscent of the strap adorning new iterations of the Pouch and the Cassette bags. It also fused links into garments to add preciosity to knitwear."

Seeing celebrities wearing perennial favourites is an encouraging sign for the sustainable fashion movement. We love seeing them restyling forever pieces in exciting new ways. From trenches to camel coats, the fashion set and celebs are still loving classic hues of beige this season.

Style Notes: We love a monochromatic look in winter—it's a great way to shake up the monotony of winter styling. We love how J.Lo doesn't miss a match; everything—from her bag to her sunnies—is based around the pale hues of her blue coat.

Style Notes: Every look Katie Holmes sets out in these days is enviable, but this statement coat is in a world of its own. So dreamy. The warm orange hues make it a forever classic with a twist. 

Style Notes: An oversized denim jacket is a total classic, but leave it to Sienna Miller to make a maxi denim coat look so cool. Paired with matching skinny jeans, it's a statement coat for those just starting to think outside the box when it comes to winter outerwear.

Style Notes: Of course, when Alexa Chung decides to do a statement coat, she still makes it look so easy. We'd try this by layering a sheer piece over a trench and take a cue from her simple jeans and trainers.

What does it take for an item to go viral these days? Most of the time you're looking at big-budget, global-influencer marketing campaigns that are agonised over, analysed and strategised to within an inch of their creativity (that's the unfortunate truth). But we pride ourselves here at Who What Wear UK on spotting those burgeoning trends and It items that grow organically—whether they're a slow burn or fast-to-ignite flame.

The latter happened back in February when we first reported just moments after the blast occurred: Blowing up faster than I could refresh my Instagram screen, within minutes of the (may I say incredible) JW Anderson A/W 19 show, London's elite in attendance were quick off the mark to share one key favourite piece on their grids. For something to be deemed important enough to be an in-feed post is, in today's social media currency, major stuff.

Giving us a very good indicator of the first must-have on the lists of editors, buyers, bloggers and stylists, Anderson's checked-collar and cuffed, balloon-sleeved trench coat seemed to strike a chord for many.

Playing into the ongoing look we've seen for voluminous silhouettes, this not-so-simple trench also ticked two other major trends: Everyone in our capital city has been wearing shades of beige to hit the streets of LFW, and on the runways, it's clear to see that plaids, tartans and checks will continue well into the end of the year. It's a triple-pronged attack and a ridiculously chic one at that.

Paired with wide-leg trousers, a black top, leather-cap bag and a chunky gold chain necklace, this easy yet impactful coat felt at once familiar and entirely new and different.

Not only has this piece become a fashion star within its own right (see the below posts), but it also further launched the career of the model wearing it: This was Medea Morton's first-ever London catwalk, and it certainly won't be her last.

In the past week, the trench coat has finally dropped. Net-a-Porter had tipped it to be a key buying item for the new season, and already influencers such as Monikh and Jeanette Madsen have been spotted in it. We don't expect the style to stay around for long despite its £1350 price tag.
