With summer just around the corner (finally!), now is the perfect time to take a close look at the season’s most in-demand piece—the dress. Summer is when we want to switch out jeans, knitwear and suede layers (thank you for your service) in favour of something a little more swishy and fun. So, I’ve taken it upon myself to evaluate the current dress climate.

As a fashion editor, I find myself routinely poring over files of runway images, inspecting street style snaps, analysing Instagram, crowdsourcing ideas from colleagues and fashion friends and looking back at archival photography to identify which key styles are coming through in the most meaningful ways; and I’ve focused my most recent efforts on summer dresses.

Dresses remain a year-round wardrobe staple, but of course, they really shine in summer. The summer dress comes in so many guises that there's always at least one to suit your style, and this year's lineup is truly reflective of that. With this in mind, and with an abundance of sources at my disposal, I’ve set out to create the ultimate guide to dresses in 2025.

Small Brands, Big Impact

Peachy Den, Susamusa, Kitri, Sister Jane, Rayan, Zeena Shah

There’s a noticeable wave of small, independent designers slowly but surely gaining cult status. Hailing from the British capital, homegrown brands such as Peachy Den and Susamusa have become shorthand for cool London style, tapping into '90s and '00s Brit-pop culture.

"I’m a very nostalgic person," says Isabella Weatherby, Peachy Den’s founder and creative director. "I have an obsession with looking back through my childhood clothes, memory boxes and diaries, hoping that something will spark an idea." It's no wonder then that starlets of today, such as Olivia Dean, Dua Lipa, Raye and Beabadoobee, have been spotted donning the brand's dresses and separates, adding to their viral appeal.

Meanwhile, for that whimsical, English-country-garden aesthetic, Kitri Studios, Sister Jane and Damson Madder have become go-to brands for those in the know. Statement fabrics, lace trims and bow detailing along with charming, characterful designs define their collections, and, in particular, their best-selling dresses.

"Storytelling is an essential part of the design process at Sister Jane," says Bernice Arriagada, senior designer at the brand. "Every collection has a narrative behind it, and each dress is influenced by this. Inspiration comes in many different forms for us, but vintage references are always our go-to. Whether it’s for a celebration, a weekend getaway or just because, [our customer] wants her dress to be a moment."

Haeni Kim, founder of Kitri Studios, has a similar ethos. "I think we all want to look and feel amazing in a dress—something easy, comfortable and versatile. I love wearing a dress that makes me feel cool and feminine at the same time, and because you’re one and done."

Why the '90s Feel So Now

It is no surprise that, once again, the red-carpet stylings of the 1990s have come back around to influence the most in-demand runway designers of today. When you think of the '90s, icons such as Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, Naomi Campbell and Gwyneth Paltrow quickly come to mind, and when studying their wardrobe choices for award ceremonies, parties and evening events, there is a distinct thread woven throughout.

These nostalgic style muses favoured slinky dresses cut on the bias or straight column styles with very little embellishment in pared-back, minimalist tones. It figures, then, that the cult dress brands of today are taking note and are bringing those styles into the now. Quiet-luxury titans The Row and Khaite, as well as Stockholm-born Toteme, are the fashion-person favourites, picking up where pioneers Calvin Klein, Jil Sander and Prada left off and providing palette cleansers in dress form for those who seek the simple life (and wardrobe).

As we move into the summer months, our need for escapism grows. With that comes a desire for travel, or at least a taste of the heat, and where better to find it than Australia? I’ve noted that many luxury retailers are snapping up Australian designers and bringing them to the UK shores, and the fashion set simply can't get enough.

Names such as Christopher Esber, Zimmerman and Aje have tapped into the demand for romantic, airy dresses—the sort that dare to bare a little bit of skin—for a fair few seasons now, whilst IYKYK labels St. Agni, DISSH and Posse offer more casual iterations with a focus on simple shapes and single-toned hues for that easy, unfussy Aussie vibe.

"When you think about the designers that have emerged from the Australian fashion landscape, the real clear throughline that tethers them all together is a sense of ease," notes Who What Wear’s SEO writer, Ava Gilchrist, who hails from Sydney. "These are clothes that can speak for themselves and don’t rely on heavy styling to make an impact. Shapes are breezy, fabrics are light and the energy is high. Making a Comeback: The Kaftan

If, like me, you have binged every season of The White Lotus and want to add a little slice of the fabulous looks worn by the characters into your wardrobe, then look no further, because the kaftan is this season’s elevated answer to the throw-on dress. Wide, floaty and often sumptuous, it's the kind of garment that goes hand in hand with bursts of bright, swirling colour and pattern, making it ideal for holidays and high-humidity dressing.

Heritage luxury fashion houses such as Pucci, Missoni and Hérmes have been showcasing kaftan-style dresses on the runway for many seasons, whilst high-end swimwear labels Johanna Ortiz, La DoubleJ and Melissa Odabash are hot on their tails with contemporary takes on the theme.

Stylist Allison Bornstein declared 2025 "a kaftan summer!" on Instagram recently, showcasing a carousel of looks from the likes of Dakota Johnson, the Olsen twins, Diane Von Furstenberg and London’s very own Twiggy to prove her point. That’s enough co-signs for me! If you, too, fancy wafting around in the biggest, most beautiful dress you can find, I’ve sourced the chicest options for you. Technique to Try: Dress Layering

A styling technique I’ve spotted bubbling up in fashion-conscious cities all over Europe—chiefly Copenhagen, Paris and Milan–is the art of layering dresses over—well, anything! Tops, jeans, trousers and even skirts, on first thought, you may feel like this is overwrought, fussy and difficult to execute, but on further inspection and when broken down into smaller parts, it can look chic and effortless.

For a grown-up '70s-inspired look, team an all-over lace, floral or flouncy dress over classic blue jeans, then max out on jewellery, oversized sunglasses and touches of suede. For a more minimalist approach, opt for a napkin-style dress with delicate broderie anglaise draped over straight-cut silky trousers, or for a more playful, Pinterest-approved vibe, try a puffball minidress with a contrasting pattern or brightly coloured bottoms. This trend is ripe for experimentation and allows for endless possibilities to shop your own wardrobe. For runway inspo, Chloé, Coach and Chanel have you covered—literally.

The Shade of the Season: Butter Yellow

Butter yellow is the sweet shade that has us all utterly transfixed for summer, and its popularity doesn't seem to be waning. The sunny hue gained cult status when Kendall Jenner wore what I would argue is the dress of the year at Coachella: Proenza Schouler’s now aptly-named Kendall dress. Consisting of a figure-hugging bodice, scoop neckline and drop waist, flared midi skirt, the sell-out style is now only available via a waiting list.

But don't fret; many other brands have also tapped into this delectable dress colour trend, including Staud, Dôen and Taller Marmo. The soft tone makes for a great wedding-guest dress option, so long as you don’t veer too light. What's notable about this trend is that it works best when there's very little pattern, flair or fuss. Just let the colour do the talking.

Summer's Best-Seller: Nobody’s Child

It’s official: we're back in the era of the polka dot. Trends are fickle and fads come and go, but there are key styles and patterns which, whenever they come back around, remind us why we adored them in the first place. Right now, we're falling back in love with spots, dots and polkas. Natalie Munro, Who What Wear’s news writer, agrees. "Whilst I wouldn’t classify polka-dot dresses as a trend in the traditional sense, they're certainly having a moment right now." If you still need convincing, just ask Julia Roberts, Sydney Sweeney and Olivia Rodrigo. When stylish celebs are giving polka dots the green light, you know you're onto a winner.

The perennial pattern is peaking this summer, and one brand can't seem to keep its offering in stock. Enter Nobody’s Child and its best-selling style, the Felicity Midi Dress. Available in white, black and now a trendy chocolate brown—plus a new puffball silhouette—the dress has had many restocks so far this season, and is available in sizes from 4 to 18.

Jody Plows, Nobody’s Child CEO, muses on the success of the dress. "Polka dots are truly timeless. As a print, they’re eye-catching without being attention-seeking, and there are so many ways to wear them," she says. But why is the Felicity in particular flying? "With adjustable and detachable straps, she can be worn either as a bandeau or with perfect-fitting spaghetti straps if you want that extra support. The cut is also designed to fit the body in a specific way, with pleating that runs all over the bodice. From day to night, the secret to Felicity’s success is that she’s so easy to wear," says Plows.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt in my 10 years of living in the city, it's that less is always more. In terms of style, the more pared-back the better—I don't like an overcomplicated look or too many adornments. A capsule wardrobe is, therefore, something I truly believe in. This stripped-back, fuss-free approach means I can pick things quickly and simply from my wardrobe of a morning, hop on the tube and glide through my day with optimal ease. I always go for pieces that offer comfort and simultaneously elevate me to feeling like my very best self.

When it comes to applying this ethos to summer dressing in the city, the rules for me are clear: sticking to light linen layers, dresses that can be readily thrown on, neutral-toned pieces mixed with some on-trend block colours, an elevated flip-flop, a woven leather bag, and lastly, some hard-wearing, structured accessories to give my look subtle visual interest. Comfort will always reign supreme for me, but there are ways of doing it with style.

This summer, I'm investing in fresh basics, subtle upgrades to my favourite wardrobe staples and a couple of extra additions which I know will perfect my looks. I'm sharing my secrets with you here, so scroll on to shop my summer capsule favourites.

1. Easy Linen Trousers

Style Notes: An easy pull-on trouser will forever be my go-to the second the mercury starts to rise. Feeling akin to pyjamas but levelled up, they come in various colours and styles. I prefer wide-leg silhouettes, which balance out my figure and pool beautifully over thong sandals or mesh ballet flats. I also love a simple block colour, much like Monikh demonstrates with her above outfit. Butter yellow, chocolate brown, creamy white or bright-red hues are the way to play the trend this summer.

2. Simple Cotton Tanks

Style Notes: Nothing beats the feeling of slipping on a fresh tank top, especially when it's form-fitting and made of thick ribbed cotton. On its own, it can look cool and sporty, and when layered, it'll ground your look, allowing you to open up your layers. Colour-pop tanks are a great hack to make your look eye-catching without even trying. Take it one step further and layer two tanks on top of each other for a very '90s-fashion spin.

3. Elevated Flip-Flops

Style Notes: Flip-flops often get a bad rap and are typically only chosen for the beach, but if you choose a sturdier style, I say they make for great day wear in the city. In my opinion, leather, suede and other luxe fabric options are best placed for wearing off the beach, giving more of a polished and classic feel to your looks, rather than plastic or rubber variations. Stick to black, brown or snake print to step out in style.

4. Woven Leather Bags

Style Notes: There's something about a basket bag that just screams summer. This year, I'm upgrading my trusty raffia basket with a woven leather variation, because it'll stand me in good stead for much longer. Black and brown is always a safe bet, but a bit of colour will give some spice to your warm-weather looks. I'm buying an extra-large one from cult-favourite brand Dragon Diffusion to carry my laptop around for work and my beach bits on my holiday.

5. Pretty Lace Tops

Style Notes: I've been spotting fashion people in London, Copenhagen and Paris in pretty lace and broderie anglaise blouses for daytime, which give a delicate, vintage feel. Toughen them up with denim or a leather jacket, or layer over a silky slip skirt. I'll be swapping my simple tees for pretty tops like this all summer long.

6. Throw-On Dresses

Style Notes: The best summer dresses are the kind that you can simply slip over your head, shimmy down and be good to go; easy-breezy and minimal fuss thanks to little in the way of zips, ties or fastenings. Ideal for high summer, these dresses are what to go for when you don't want fabric to cling or restrain you in any way. They also look ultra polished when accessories are kept to a minimum. Don't overdo it!

7. Colour-Block Shirting

Style Notes: I subscribe to the idea that you can never have too many button-down shirts in your wardrobe. I love nothing more than smartening up any look with a cotton poplin number, in either a stripe print or light pastel tone. I'm choosing the latter this summer, and layering it over cotton tanks, flowing trousers and dresses. So crisp and fresh.

8. Vintage-Feel Sunglasses

Style Notes: My way of grounding any look is to throw on a classic pair of sunglasses. They add definition and character to your outfit, whilst keeping your eyes shielded and protected. I'm channelling Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy energy with oval-shaped frames in classic black, taupe and tortoiseshell colours: timeless and classy.

9. Chunky Resin Jewellery

Style Notes: In the past, I've frequently found myself battling with my many necklaces, which have tangled around my neck. This summer, I'm packing them safely away in favour of single resin and acetate styles. They still pack a punch, but are so much easier to slip on and wear all day without getting hot and bothered.

If there’s one thing my friends can count on me for, it’s knowing which trends are about to hit the mainstream. "Soph," they say, "what's in fashion, and what should I be buying?" Right now, I’m advising my nearest and dearest to invest in their summer footwear. It’s the quickest way to upgrade your spring outfits and take them one step closer to summer (pun fully intended). Open-toe season is officially here, and it's time to book in that pedi.

In terms of what's trending, I’m calling it: flat shoes will rule summer 2025, so I'm eschewing trainers and heels in favour of comfy styles that feel elegant and put-together for both day and evening. There's a plethora of flats on offer for summer, which are equally as chic (and sometimes even chicer) than their heeled counterparts. With the sun high in the sky and the mercury rising, there's no better time to experiment a little, and footwear is my favourite way to give a look real intention and style.

Whilst researching summer’s strongest shoe trends, a few things became clear. Strappy sandals are so back, in leather and suede variations, pared-back neutrals and head-turning colours. There are also some closed-toe options coming to the fore, with barely-there mesh flats and jelly styles which have been given luxe updates (don’t be deceived; you still may want to have your toes done for these two). And finally, of course, there's the humble flip-flop. Traditionally banished to the poolside, the oft-misunderstood sandal is going through a renaissance period, and fashion people can't get enough.

1. Colour-Pop Strappy Sandals

Style Notes: If you're typically a minimalist dresser but fancy a little flourish of artful colour to ring in the sunshine, look no further. I've noticed fashion people who tend to dress in neutral, pared-back tones choosing colour-pop sandals with skinny straps and simple profiles. Choose a bright primary tone to give your simple looks a dopamine hit.

Style Notes: There's no denying that flip-flops are bang on trend. The V-shape thong silhouette gives a leg-lengthening effect, which is great for petite people, and not only that, but the sheer ease of slipping them on allows you to simply go about your day. Style Notes: The Row sent the internet into a frenzy when it launched its netted jelly flats last summer. The rest of the world is finally catching on and falling (back, if you were a kid in the '90s) in love with jelly sandals in 2025, hook, line and sinker. Mary-Jane shapes and ballet-flat updates make the trend feel contemporary and tasteful.

Working in fashion and the social media arena means I'm often glued to my phone.

Whether I'm scrolling Instagram, Substack or Pinterest (my trio of choice as a millennial), my phone is never far from reach. I daren’t track my screentime—I can only assume it’s at an all-time high. Despite this, constantly having my face in my phone does give me access to the latest breaking trends that matter right now, allowing me to weave together common threads of what’s in style in fashion’s leading cities, including New York, Paris, Copenhagen and my home of London, all from the screen of my smartphone.

All in all, the "trends" I'm personally picking up on are the kind that require a double-take. They're subtle, unassuming and don’t dominate the rest of the wearer’s look. I’m talking tweaks in fabrics, updates in cuts and silhouettes and vintage coded moments reworked for a contemporary feel; blink and you really will miss them. As someone who typically dresses in an anti-trend way with a self-proclaimed eagle eye, it’s the little things that matter the most.

Style Notes: As temperatures rise, so does the need for an easy-breezy shirt or blouse. Broderie anglaise is the pretty fabric trend I'm seeing on blouses, shirts and dresses right now. Bringing a sense of lightness and breathability to your outfit, it's far from old-fashioned—even the minimalists are getting behind it.

Silk Scarves

Style Notes: Fashion people have revived the silk scarf over the past few summers, and for 2025, we're not just seeing them tied around handbag handles, worn as bandanas or knotted around the neck; the silk scarf is now being adopted as a belt around the waist in a triangle formation. The key here is to choose a silky material with a classic, vintage-feel pattern to add a bit of visual interest to an otherwise simple, modern look, à la Coco Schiffer (pictured above).

Papery White Trousers

Style Notes: A trend I've seen emerging on the uptown style-setters of New York and now London, white trousers are getting lighter and more delicate than ever in feather-weight cotton and silk constructions akin to paper. They're the perfect solution for those seeking a modest option for summer, and also pack well for hot holidays.

XXL Raffia Totes

Style Notes: Who can blame a girl for wanting a summer-holiday-ready bag that carries everything bar the kitchen sink? The big-raffia-bag trend is exactly that: big. It's also super versatile, working just as well as a summer office bag as it does beachside; just swap out your laptop for your beach towel and book.

Lace-Trimmed Dresses

Style Notes: We have much to thank The Row for, but right now, I'm particularly grateful for the brand's chic reinvention of layering a lace slip, skirt or cami over trousers or jeans (see look 3 from its spring 2025 collection). As we head into summer, choose a classic lace-trimmed cami midi dress in a white or earthy hue, and layer it over loose jeans.

Mesh Ballet Flats

Style Notes: I'm typically a loafer, clog or trainer wearer, but the rise and rise of mesh ballerinas has me second-guessing my summer footwear choices. Pairing so well with pretty warm-weather looks and light enough to wear all day, these light-as-a-feather shoes are city-proof and weekend-ready.

Heirloom Pendant Necklaces

Style Notes: I've noticed this trend cropping up on fashion people with minimal and pared-back yet wealth-whispering style. That doesn't mean to say it's an exclusive trend for those in the upper echelons, though; rather, the beauty of this accessory trend is that it lends itself to a relaxed, DIY-esque look and feel. These are modern treasures.

Style Notes: From COS' Breton cardigan to this sporty crew neck, there's something about wearing striped knits over shirts that is making preppy feel fresh again in 2025. Style Notes: All it took was this cute basket bag being spotted on the arms of some of Instagram's best dressed to send the internet into a frenzy, and before we knew it, DeMellier bags became a status symbol. These elegant styles strike the right balance between aspirational and affordable, and I lost count of how many times I've spotted the New York tote and Tokyo handbag during fashion month last season, so it makes sense that their seasonal basket would stir up a commotion too.

Style Notes: So far this summer has been a bit of a "will-it-won't-it" in terms of sunny weather, but if you are lucky enough to be heading abroad, you're going to need a light layer that does it all, and I'm convinced that cotton trousers are the answer. Style Notes: We love any viral buy that also happens to be affordable, and Uniqlo's gingham shorts are a high-street wonder. Cute, comfy and the kind of summer outfit staple you can throw on in five minutes, these are still relatively under-the-radar (and in stock), so let's just keep this secret between us for now.

Style Notes: It's been a good couple of years for Citizens of Humanity jeans. We've spotted the loose-legged (often turned up) Ayla style in some of the most stylish casual outfits, and unsurprisingly, the pair has now been copied by many high-street brands. Although imitation is supposed to be the highest form of flattery, you can't beat the OG pair for comfort and quality.

Spotting trends is something I've become very good at in my 12 years working in the fashion industry, Instagram being my platform of choice for such pursuits. With a constant flurry of uploads, nothing beats the rush I get when I spy three or more people wearing similar pieces; that's when I know I'm on to something. Whether it's a new bag shape or a particular affinity for a specific colour, my gut instinct is to open my laptop and tell you all about it. Now, as the sun shines through my window, and dare I say it, I can go outside without a heavy wool coat on, I think now just might be the time to start exploring which items feel fresh for spring 2023.

I've already outlined the macro-trends from the spring 2023 runways, the effects of which I'm starting to see pull through in real-life outfits; there are a selection of smaller, more specific micro-trends that are already making an impact on the direction fashion is taking this season and will make your wardrobe feel undeniably current for the next few weeks. As with any guidance you receive on Who What Wear, we never advise jumping on a trend just because it's, well, trending—it really ought to speak to you and your sense of style before you even think about buying into it. The same goes for what you'll see below. Sure, they all might be "in" right now, but think about longevity. Instagram has come a long way since it was founded in 2010. While we'll always look back on the over-filtered snaps of our coffee cups with fondness, as time has gone on, the platform has become an increasingly chicer and vast space. Now, you can Reel until your heart's content, connect with people via DM, and collect your favourite content to refer back to at a later date, and that's on top of what the app was initially built for—sharing photographs.

This is still my favourite aspect of Instagram; scrolling through beautiful captures. Given the fact that I live and breathe my career as a fashion editor, it should come as no surprise that my discover page is 99% style inspiration.

I spend a great deal of time combing through the latest posts from my go-to content creators, and upon doing so this week, I couldn't help but notice that the same viral trends kept cropping up, pieces that feel especially fresh this season. So, I thought, why not share them here with you, should you be looking for ways to make your outfits feel more current. Below are eight Instagram fashion trends that will define the 2023 aesthetic.

1. Split-Hem Leggings

The only thing I do more than scroll through new arrivals and study runway images is stalk Instagram in search of new trends. My saved folder is a treasure trove of ever-evolving fabrics, colours, silhouettes, and accessories, all of which are minutes away from going full-on viral. My latest curation is one of my best.

From high-shine accessories and knife-sharp footwear to 2.0 overalls and completely sheer lace, the trends ahead are fast on their way to Instagram fame. Scroll down to see how these fall fads and many more are manifesting on our feeds as we speak. Thanks to brands like Balenciaga and Prada, pointed toes are quickly replacing the round- and square-toe shoe styles that have been commonplace on social for the last half a decade or so. Prominent on the spring runways at Blumarine, Chanel, and Prada, this is one trend that, despite its quick rise, won't be dying down anytime soon. On the contrary, expect to see it become even more ubiquitous on Instagram in the coming months.

I swear every swipe on my Instagram feed in the last month has been met with something silver and shiny, whether it's a pair of Prada heels or a Zara bag. And it's not just accessories. Coated jeans, leather jackets, slip dresses, and more have, too, been dipped in liquid metal this season.

Six months ago, I would've avoided my frumpy overalls at all costs. But after spotting one too many pairs on chic Instagram accounts, my opinion on the workwear one-pieces has done a complete 180.

They say trends tend to come and go, but as transient as they may seem, I can tell you first-hand that certain trends can feel virtually inescapable. And I mean that virtual part literally.

As someone who spends much of their day scrolling (I'm a social media editor, so it comes with the territory), I'm often struck by just how omnipresent a certain item or trend can become on Instagram once it starts to gain traction. Whether it be on the streets of Paris, the rooftops of New York or the parks of London, social media's most popular items manage to transcend borders and appear on feeds across the globe. Sometimes, it's a collective mood that feeds a cult item's success, but there's no denying the drip-drip influence of the digital sphere we spend time immersed in.

Last summer, it was hard to open an app without seeing an image of London-based indie brand House of Sunny's green knit Hockney Dress. Worn by influencers and celebrities alike (hello, Kendall Jenner!), the midi was so popular that it managed to land itself a coveted spot on Lyst's Hottest Products Index. This past winter, Instagram was flooded with images of oversize, multicolour cardigans—aptly named colossal knits—thanks to Northern Irish designer Hope Macaulay. As it stands today, her brand has over 178k followers on Instagram and has been worn by the likes of Gigi and Bella Hadid. Not bad for a designer who only graduated in 2018.

After seeing a particular carousel of items featured so regularly on my feed, I thought it was time I tried to understand the hype and trial these trending—or, dare I say, viral—items myself. I'm not usually one to jump on a bandwagon, and you'll often find me in much more understated looks, but who better than a social media editor to put these IG-worthy looks to the test? 

For the occasion, I turned to fashion rental companies Endless Wardrobe and Hurr, asking them to help me track down the most 'gram-worthy pieces I could find. From Marcia's Tchikiboum Cut-Out Dress, which has been the item du jour amongst the French influencer set, to Kai Collective's ever-popular Gaia Dress, the rental companies definitely delivered. But how did the looks stack up on the streets of East London? Keep scrolling for my honest opinions on what it's like to wear Instagram's biggest trends offline.

Musier Paris Tie-Front Blouse 

It's hardly surprising that this Alma knit—hailing from influencer Anne-Laure Mais's brand Musier Paris—has become popular amongst the fashion set. Practically anything Mais wears turns to social media gold, so it's no shock to see so many other arbiters of taste following suit.

The interesting silhouette and tie-front detail on this top make it instantly recognisable online and in real life, and it certainly ticks a few of this season's trends (crop tops, waist ties and peekaboo details) in one fell swoop.

What I loved about this piece is that the top can be tied up in multiple ways to offer more or less coverage, depending on your mood. For this article, I styled the top in the same way I've seen on IG: with a tie at the bust. For a more demure aesthetic, I'd go for a crossover look without the knot at the front. (It's much more bra-friendly, too.) While I might not be jumping to wear this look to the office, it's definitely a fun item to rent from Endless Wardrobe for drinks with friends or a night out on the town, especially when paired with simple wide-leg trousers. It's a yes from me.

Marcia Tchikiboum Cut-Out Dress

Here at Who What Wear, we've dubbed this the "no-knickers dress" for obvious reasons. The item, however, was rented, so for the purpose of this photoshoot, I've used a strategically placed arm to cover what otherwise would have been quite the obvious VPL. (Call me old-fashioned; I don't mind.)

I won't lie. There's a certain level of confidence needed to pull off a dress like this, and while it might not necessarily be for everyone, I do have to commend those brave enough to try it. It's a showstopper, alright, though maybe not the most practical item to wear down to the local pub. I felt myself nervously cover up any time another patron walked by, so I'd say this look might be best kept for dinner parties with close friends or simply anyone you wouldn't mind being around if a dreaded wardrobe malfunction were to occur. Perhaps it's no coincidence then that I've yet to see an image online of this dress worn out and about.

Molby the Label Tilda Dress

Particularly popular amongst our country's influencer contingent this year, independent British brand Molby the Label has seen its cute Tilda Dress plastered all over social media. The contrasting colours and gingham weave make it instantly eye-catching, and given the brand's made-to-order model, I'm hardly surprised the fit looks just perfect on everyone. I don't often wear pink and thought this look might have been slightly too frou-frou for me, but the moment I put it on, I fell in love. It's so wearable and just perfect for summer picnics.

The dress retails for £130, which feels so reasonable considering each garment is handmade for each customer. Having spoken to the brand's founder about Molby's slow-fashion ethos, I can personally vouch for how passionate she is about offering an antidote to fast fashion. If you're looking to toughen the look up a bit, might I suggest wearing the dress alongside chunky flat boots much like Faye Ellaby has done above.

It's not often that you spot a Jenner in a dress that retails for less than £100. Though, spotting Kendall Jenner in the House of Sunny Hockney Dress last summer merely solidified what every fashion editor in London already knew: It was *the* dress of the season. And its popularity shows no sign of slowing down. Already this spring, we've seen the return of this dress on our feeds alongside several new-season iterations in the fun, colourful patterns we've come to expect from House of Sunny. 

A dress this bold requires very little styling, so I wore it alongside basic sandals for my local jaunt. In real life, I was also somewhat surprised by the dress's texture. Having seen it online umpteen times, I made the assumption that it was your regular, run-of-the-mill stretchy jersey, but in reality, the dress is made from a soft, almost fluffy yarn fabric with a really unique intarsia pattern knitted into it rather than printed on top. It was definitely more fluid and more comfortable than I imagined. Win-win.

Hope Macaulay Colossal Knit 

Upon arrival, it was hard to ignore just how heavy this incredible Hope Macaulay piece is. I had never thought about its weight when seeing it online, and it almost felt as if I was wearing a weighted blanket—in the best way possible. Influencers have been styling the item casually with jeans. Though, I'd be wary to say it replaces a jacket. The knit's open weave tends to let the air through, so I'd say this look is best kept for early spring and might feel less practical in the depths of winter when worn solo.

The second thing that struck me about this jacket was just how delicate the item was. Each Hope Macaulay knit is handmade to order, and you can really tell how much time, love and skill have gone into creating this oversize rainbow piece. It truly is a statement maker and photographs well, so it makes total sense that it would become an Insta hit.

Kai Collective Gaia Dress

Let me tell you ladies: This Kai Collective Gaia Dress is definitely not for the faint-hearted, and I would go so far as to say that's precisely why it's been so wildly popular. If you're looking to stand out, almost any piece from this London-based label will do it. I've followed the brand's founder Fisayo Longe for some time on social media and have been desperate to get my hands on one of her dresses for a while. She makes them look so good. The marble print is unique and sets the brand apart, but it's also refreshing to see that these It pieces are being produced in a wider range of more inclusive sizes. Thankfully, fashion rental site Hurr was able to make my wishes come true. 

What I didn't spot online, though, was just how sheer the fabric is. I layered the dress over a black bodysuit but was hyper-aware of the fact you could see everything underneath. For those who want to cover up a little more, I'd suggest a form-fitting slip dress instead.

The other day I told my husband that I might've forgotten how to put outfits together, which I probably shouldn't admit, given my profession. While it's an overstatement, the truth is that I probably am a little rusty after a year spent in sweats and slippers, but things are starting to look up for 2021, and I'm starting to think about what I'm going to wear now that the weather is getting nicer.

Instagram is pretty much my #1 source for outfit trend spotting, and so to get myself out of this year-of-lockdown style rut, I chose five looks that chic women recently posted to their feeds, and re-created them with pieces I already own. I can't say that I looked quite as cool as they did, but some of the outfits got me out of my comfort zone (in a good way), and I'd wear all of them again. Mission accomplished.

This was one of my favourite outfits of the bunch. It's perfect for those days when it's too warm for a jacket but too cool for bare arms. And the sneakers make it a little more appropriate for these casual (sartorially speaking) times we're living in.

Tennis skirt outfits were suddenly everywhere last summer and since people are still wearing them, I say might as well. I like how Claire Most paired hers with an oversized T-shirt. It makes it look a little more effortless.

I had so much fun wearing this for a few minutes and plan on re-wearing it outside. I wear jeans and a T-shirt often, so it's always nice to find ways to mix things up. I wore my new Reformation sports bra instead of a knit bra top and I think it worked just as well and it provided a bit more coverage.

I think if I had to change something about my version of this Princess Diana-inspired outfit, it would be a slightly shorter pair of bike shorts and a longer sweatshirt. Other than that, it's an easy outfit idea for when you just want to be comfortable in the spring.

What's better than one chic Parisian? How about an entire family of well-dressed French women? I've been following sisters Salomé and Tamara Mory on Instagram for quite some time, but I recently discovered that their mother, Elisabeth Mory, is equally stylish. 

Curious about the Mory matriarch's style, I interviewed Elizabeth about her favourite autumn outfits and shopping methods. "When it comes to my personal style, I would not describe myself as a fashionista," Elizabeth told Who What Wear. "I have only a small list of brands that I love and then I buy the same dress, top, or pair of jeans in different versions. I am a less-is-more kind of person. So my ideal outfit is a good pair of jeans, the perfect T-shirt, and strong accessories. Or, a beautiful dress that you can wear at the beach with flip flops or at night with heels. A journalist from French Vogue described me as the incarnation of the Parisian. That might be true."

I went on to ask Elizabeth to compare and contrast how she dresses versus her daughters. "The girls' style is quite close to mine, but I think they are more open to different brands and silhouettes than me. Also, they can wear mini skirts which I love but can no longer wear in town—for age reasons." We're certainly proponents of all ages wearing anything they please, but it always comes down to personal preference.

No beach? No problem. Fittingly, this summer’s most-liked pictures don’t involve a tropical vacation or set up on the sand, but rather center around something a little closer to home and a lot more accessible.

Spoiler alert: iI’s a patch of grass and, optionally, a blanket or even bedsheet if you so please. That’s right—it seems that more time to appreciate the simple things in life has led Instagram’s most stylish fashion people to reimagine (yet again) what a cool shot looks like. Thanks to Diane von Furstenberg, wrap dresses have long been considered the ultimate "throw on and go" outfit. They might be flattering, but they have a habit of acting up within seconds of you walking out the door. I've had too many experiences of wrap dresses literally unwrapping, so I swore I'd never go near a wrap dress again. Then I saw the brand Art Dealer, and I was willing to give the style another chance. Founder of the brand Carolina Cerutti turned her love of vintage into a dress-focused contemporary brand that creates timeless and oh-so-pretty midis.

The Sophia silk wrap dress comes in sherbert shades, such as a sugary lemon, a soft mint and a vibrant raspberry. If pastels aren't your thing, the most elegant iteration is certainly the wrap that is black on one side and champagnes silk on the other. Art Dealer also created lots of skirt-and-blouse co-ords that have a feeling of Gwyneth Paltrow in the '90s. The brand might be a new recruit of Net-a-Porter, but the following is quite impressive, as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Elsa Hosk and Romee Strijd have all worn the silky midis. In the current climate of information overload and fashion-blogger saturation, it can be hard to know where to turn to for style inspiration. Every aesthetic under the sun has been catered to (10 times over), and there is no stone left unturned when it comes to the eternal search for that perfect outfit. So what's a fashion lover to do?

While youth may still be viewed as a precious commodity in the world of fashion, there's a new wave of over-50 influencers challenging the status quo and forgoing the way for a future where women don't disappear from the public eye after reaching a certain age. This is fashion that transcends the generations and speaks to individual taste rather than an age bracket.

These women have the benefit of hindsight and years of experience when it comes to style successes and mistakes. I can't think of a better source of inspiration, and as someone who's in her 20s, I'm more than willing to lap up any fashion advice offered to me. "My advice for my younger self would be don't be afraid to experiment; be open to new styles and trends; and have fun with fashion. Have more distance from yourself and what you're wearing. Over the years, I've learnt that the first impression can be wrong, and by this, I mean we shouldn't just give up and say, Oh, this trend is not for me. Be open-minded. I think you can't go wrong with combining statement tops, trousers, skirts, etc., with more classic items. My fail-safe outfit formula has to be a high-quality white shirt, tailored trousers and heels. This formula has never failed me."

"I've always liked being individual, so I've never worried about having to conform to a style or look. I'm still happy with many of my own vintage clothes. "My advice? I'd say dare to try new things when you're alone in front of your mirror. Experiment with unexpected combos using whatever you have at hand. Take photos. Play first with your own style for your own satisfaction—then you can make a statement in the real world.

"If I had to give fashion advice to my younger self, I would say to be proud of the small things that make you different because they will define you in the long run. My max heel height is 8 centimetres. It simply is not comfortable if it gets higher than that. The word "affordable" is one I'm always wary of using within my fashion writing, as one person's bargain is always going to be another person's splurge. The pieces I'm about to talk about below certainly aren't cheap, however, unlike many of the brands on Net-a-Porter and MatchesFashion, they're potentially accessible to those of us who normally shop at Zara and Topshop

The contemporary market is one which has been growing significantly over the past two years. Back in 2017, I wrote about how brands like Ganni, Rixo, Staud and Réalisation are fighting to make your wardrobes brighter, better and more affordable. Instead of diffusion lines that mimic the aesthetic of a bigger design house at a lower price point, this new breed of labels are independent selling direct to consumer, with their own instantly identifiable design. Over the past two years, most of the cult buys that we have written about at Who What Wear are by these designers and priced around the £200 to £300 mark.

This direct-to-consumer contemporary bracket is one that's still hugely growing, and these are no longer just small Instagram-led businesses but a key priority for leading luxury retailers. In fact, buyers now scout for brands by scrolling. Net-a-Porter this summer launched seven brands that were previously only direct-to-consumer, taking niche brands to a global audience. Keep scrolling to shop the new affordable cult brands that we at Who What Wear are championing in 2019.

1. The Frankie Shop

The Frankie Shop has tiny stores in Le Marais and New York, but this boutique is widening its reach this year, as it just launched on Net-a-Porter. This brand is getting a lot of love from power influencers and street style stars—the pleated skirts and boxy blazers are particularly popular.

2. Faithfull the Brand

Faithfull the Brand was founded in Bali in 2012, but this year, that it has gone from an under-the-radar beach brand to a mainstay on our Instagram feeds. It specialises in holiday clothing with a zesty colour palette and playful prints, but the dresses look just as good in Green Park as they do in Positano.

3. Kalda

Kalda was founded three years ago by London College of Fashion graduate Kata Alda, but this year it has really cranked its business up a notch, launching its own e-commerce site. Sold on Browns and Harvey Nichols, these £200-something shoes are as comfortable as they are Instagrammable. 

4. The Line by K

Influencers are often responsible for items reaching cult status, and The Line by K was created by fashion blogger Karla Deras. This is another new name to Net-a-Porter, and it sold 500 items in its first week on the site. The lime-green slip skirt has been particularly popular with the Instagram crowd.

Art Dealer is one of Net-a-Porter's new direct-to-consumer brands that launched this year. It creates elegant co-ords for grown-ups, and consist of printed blouses and matching pencil skirts. As the name would suggest, this brand creates beautiful prints with a nostalgic vintage feel.

Sandals brand Studio Amelia only launched this year, but it made its debut on Net-a-Porter and Browns. Quite the entrance…

Known for colourful prints and wearable silhouettes, Stine Goya is the Scandi label the fashion crowd have been losing it over in 2019. Highlights include the Justin Fair Isle chunky knit (perfect with jeans) and the Baily silken midi dresses (anyone have an autumn wedding coming up?).

I can always make room in my wardrobe for a new pair of shoes. In all honesty, barely a month goes by when I don't treat myself to a new pair. A high-street pair, that is. Of course, I ogle over designer footwear just as much as the next fashion obsessive, but seeing as I can afford myself several high-street pairs for the price I'd pay for a single set of Manolo Blahniks or Jimmy Choos, the maths speaks for itself.

It also helps that right now, high-street shoes are the best they've ever been, and it seems I'm not the only one who thinks so. So many influencers have been wearing high-street shoes of late (below you'll find my absolute favourites).
