After years of a quiet-luxury hiatus which celebrated all things minimalist, clean and pared-back, we're now entering a time of joy, colour and experimentation in style. The same can be said for our homes, with chintz, colour and vibrancy paving a new path after years of "vanilla girl" interiors dominating. Interior designer and model Flossie Hughes has observed a similar movement.

"One of the biggest shifts I’ve noticed is how much bolder people are becoming with their interiors choices. There’s a growing confidence in colour, pattern and statement materials. People are leaning away from overly safe or neutral schemes and are instead embracing spaces that feel personal and expressive. As many people have returned to the office post-lockdown, there’s a renewed desire to clearly separate home from workplace. Rather than defaulting to whites, greys and beiges (which are often seen in the workplace), people are opting for warmer, richer palettes and more character-driven interiors. The home is no longer just a neutral backdrop; it's becoming a sanctuary and a form of self-expression," she says.

In the same vein, we're witnessing a direct backlash to the clean girl: enter the "messy girl" era. When I scroll Instagram and Pinterest, I'm seeing more authentic, "lived in" environments instead of tidy (arguably sterile) and staged homes that feel photo-ready; products left out in the bathroom, desks that look like they're actually worked at and kitchens that one might use for cooking and eating (the shock!) are showing up much more in interiors content online.

Another huge trend in fashion is the comeback of boho fashion. Not just in its early 2000's "boho chic" iteration that was defined by Sienna Miller and Mary-Kate Olsen, but also in a way that feels much older, that celebrates folksy embroidery, earthy colours and natural fabrics. This very same thing is happening in our homes right now, not just with decorative items that feel adjacent to a folk aesthetic, but an emphasis on more natural materials and organic colour palettes.

Of this, Hughes says, "The interior design mood for 2026 is what I like to call the editorial interpretation of Mother Nature. We’re seeing the return of Earth’s raw, natural colours and materials, reintroduced in a far more elevated way as refined focal points rather than rustic accents. Shades like burgundy, teal and chartreuse are emerging alongside materials such as Calacatta marble, travertine, wrought iron and burl wood. There’s a clear emphasis on texture and depth, with finishes that feel considered and timeless rather than purely decorative."

That being said, there's also a place for those who lean more minimalist and look to man-made products. Stainless steel has prevailed as a key material in the home (not just in the kitchen) in recent years, and we've seen a notable return of glass tiles and postmodern furniture with plastic, fiberglass and chrome accents.

In essence, there's an eclectic mix of rising trends prevailing for 2026, and styles suitable for all tastes and home environments. Below, I've listed the seven I think are worth noting, along with homeware picks to help you bring them into your own space.

1. Folk Bohemia

Style Notes: In 2026, the modern-folk movement in interiors is a little like the boho revival we're seeing in fashion. A few years ago, the term "bohemia" from an interiors point of view might have conjured up images of rattan ceiling lights, whitewashed walls and crochet wall hangings reminiscent of holidays in Mexico and Bali. But now, this newer brand of folk style feels more artisan, cosy and eclectic. No longer just drawing from a neutral palette, this folksy iteration of bohemia feels joyous and colourful. Hughes best describes the modern-folk trend as a combination of "styles that create a very cosy and soulful space," as she says in one of her videos. "It incorporates a mix of wood patinas, earthy tones and artisan textiles, all of which add a lot of character to a room."

2. European Postmodernism

Style Notes: For a long while, mid-century modern was the trending era for antique furniture. Wassily chairs, teak sideboards and cane accents prevailed in the most stylish spaces. Now, however, there’s growing interest in postmodernist pieces from the '70s to the early '90s. From space-age fibreglass coffee tables to Mario Bellini sofas and Togo chairs, these are the trending pieces bringing in Feng Shui in New York, Paris and London right now.

3. Wood Accents

Style Notes: After years of harsher materials like concrete taking over surfaces and floors, wood is finally getting its moment. Adding warmth and dimension to any room of the house; be it in the bedroom with a mahogany headboard or a burl chest-of-drawers, in the living room with panelling and fitted shelving or in the kitchen with a reclaimed pine island or contemporary oak windows; wood, especially when antique and in a mix of finishes, is fast becoming one of the more popular materials in interior design this year.

4. Animal Print

Style Notes: ICYMI, animal prints aren’t just trending in fashion. From leopard to zebra, deer and dalmatian, we’ve noticed animal prints across all kinds of soft furnishings, like zebra rugs courtesy of Nordic Knots, cowhide tubular Bauhaus chairs and chaise longues and, of course, the occasional leopard-print cushion. These patterns look especially chic with the aforementioned postmodern-style furniture, for a cool and confident way to elevate a space, allowing you to experiment with print without becoming too maximalist (more on that below).

Style Notes: Unlike wood, stainless steel has a definitive man-made, industrial feel. It's affordable, durable and, in my opinion, gets better with age and wear. Stainless steel is a growing preference in kitchens for those who want a contemporary feel. Elsewhere in the home, it's popping up on occasional furniture and fixtures—think side tables and shelving—as well as postmodern accessories and details like fruit bowls, candleholders and coasters.

Whereas trends like chintz and folk bohemia feel warm and cosy, stainless steel is unmistakably cooler, and for me, this is its appeal. It works well combined with tiled or polished concrete floors and blends with modernist furniture and pops of colour. It’s also very '90s and early ‘00s, so if JFK Junior’s iconic Manhattan loft in Love Story is your vibe, then this is the material for you.

6. Charming Chintz

Style Notes: Maximalist to its absolute core, chintz is not for the faint-hearted. Whilst this vintage-inspired, frothy and print-heavy trend feels simultaneously dated and timeless, it’s currently enjoying a major moment. Hotels like The Rose in Deal and the recently revamped suites at The Dorchester in London celebrate swathes of fabrics adorned in floral prints, vibrant hues, moiré silk, fringe tassels and rich velvet.

Often considered kitsch, there’s a cosiness to chintzy décor that feels inviting. Whilst going all out with Bunny MacDougal-inspired dust ruffles and mallards isn’t a requirement, looking to occasional heavily printed furniture like pouffes, adding an accent wall of floor-to-ceiling patterned wallpaper or even sourcing a four-poster bed (I swear, they’re coming back!) are strong suggestions.

7. Girl Mess

Style Notes: This is probably my favourite trend from the list. After a long while of pristine homes that appear staged for social media, we've entered an era of more "real" or lived-in home environments. We could compare this to the demise of the clean-girl aesthetic in beauty; a desire for the more authentic realities of other people's homes is growing. Of course, these homes still feel beautifully curated, but instead of colour-coordinating your bookshelves or ensuring your beauty cabinet only contains perfectly organised Byredo and Aesop products, we're getting acquainted with "girl mess".

This is about kitchens filled with mismatched fabrics and trinkets that evoke memories of holidays, living rooms that look lived-in, with stacks of books used as side tables, open newspapers with a pen on the side to finish a half-done sudoku or crossword puzzle, as well as candles that have actually been burnt is the general vibe I'm getting from the interiors accounts I follow. So, messy girls, rejoice!

The beginning of a new year feels like the turning of a fresh page. And with that feeling comes a desire to set new goals, pick up a few hobbies or even forgo some bad habits. I, for one, need to take my own advice here, as right now, my wardrobe doors will just not close. I have multiples of the same thing, a real mix of seasonal items (my bikinis and scarves are sitting next to each other), some of which I know can be stored away until I actually need them, and I have a handful of pieces that no longer feel like "me". I like to do a yearly wardrobe reset, and so, this January, I intend to spend a chilly Sunday indoors to really get to grips with the task at hand. As a fashion editor with a decade in the biz under my belt, I consider myself a pro at this kind of thing, but I wanted to get some insider advice from a personal shopper who specialises in wardrobe-refresh sessions with her clients. I tapped London-based personal stylist Kate Lauren for her tips, tricks and methods. In short, she spills the tea on how to revitalise your wardrobe and maximise what you already have at hand, whilst spotting the gaps, so you can make intentional and smart shopping decisions moving forward.

1. How Do I Prepare for a Wardrobe Clean-Out This January?

To start, you need to set some serious time aside, and I would suggest you don't do it in the evening. Working with the sun shining through into your space will allow you to see everything in the clear light of day. It will set you up for a positive, calm experience and allow you to see every piece you have, not to mention provide the light you need to try it all on properly.

"I always say preparation starts mentally, not physically," Lauren tells me. "Go in with a clear aim. Whether that is creating more space, building a more cohesive wardrobe or identifying gaps, having a goal keeps decisions focused and avoids unnecessary overwhelm."

She recommends taking note of what you reach for most often and why. "These pieces tell you far more about your personal style than the items sitting untouched." She also advises investing in a packable rail so you can move things around, which will help with the editing process.

"A clear head, good lighting and a full-length mirror also make a huge difference," Lauren says. Try putting on some low-level music, lighting a candle and making it an experience. This time is for you, and should feel positive, fun and constructive.

2. Are There Rules, Methods or Systems for a Successful Wardrobe Clean-Out?

It's important to consider if all the items in your wardrobe are doing the most they can for you. If not, they're just taking up real estate. Lauren has a signature technique to help, which she has coined "3 Ways She Stays". "I encourage clients to ensure that every piece in their wardrobe can be styled in at least three different ways, across three different aspects of their lifestyle, whether that is work, weekends, evenings or travel," she notes.

"This approach ensures each item is truly working hard in your wardrobe. We only wear around 20% of our wardrobes. Applying the "3 Ways She Stays" technique during a wardrobe clear-out helps you identify which pieces deserve their place, which need styling support and which can be confidently let go."

3. How Do I Know What to Keep?

This is where that temporary rail will come in handy. Bring forward any piece you wear daily and often, and love. Lauren has some sound advice. "I always tell clients that what you keep should be led by how you actually live, not by guilt or past versions of yourself. The pieces worth keeping are the ones that fit well, feel comfortable and make you feel confident the moment you put them on."

These pieces should not only spark joy, but also feel the most "you". Embrace them and work with them—you invested in them for a reason, so treasure them.

4. What Items Do I Throw Away?

"Anything that is damaged beyond repair, or no longer fits comfortably, should be the first to go," advises Lauren. "Clothes that make you feel self-conscious, restricted, or unlike yourself rarely earn a second chance, no matter how beautiful they once were."

Haven't worn something in years? Ask yourself why. If it holds sentimental value, store it safely somewhere which doesn't take up space in your day-to-day working wardrobe. But if a piece feels like a previous version of you, which you don't subscribe to anymore, pop it in a pile of things to toss.

"I also suggest letting go of pieces that no longer align with your lifestyle," says Lauren. "If something only works for a version of your life you are no longer living, it is likely taking up space both physically and mentally. The goal is not to be ruthless, but to create space for a wardrobe that feels current, wearable and supportive of who you are now."

Importantly, the items that no longer serve you may find a great home elsewhere, so look to donate these pieces (as long as they are in a wearable and saleable condition) to your local charity shop or a clothing drive initiative.

5. How Do I Begin to Identify and Fill in the Gaps?

This is where the full-length mirror comes into play, as you will need to try things on. "The easiest way to identify wardrobe gaps is to look at what is missing while you are getting dressed. As you are clearing out, actually get dressed. Try pieces on, build outfits, and notice where things fall short," Lauren suggests.

"If you create a warm-toned outfit but do not own a warm-toned belt, write it down. If you repeatedly reach for a layer, a shoe, or an accessory that does not exist in your wardrobe, that is your answer. These moments of friction reveal far more than scrolling or impulse shopping ever will."

Identifying the pieces you lack means when you intend to shop, you have already subconsciously built yourself a shopping list, full of items you actually need, will use and hopefully, will love for many years to come.

6. How Can I Organise My Wardrobe to Work Harder?

A hack I truly believe in is a hanger detox. Are all your hangers a messy mix of broken plastic, wood, flocked, metal, ones from shops from decades past, or from the dry cleaners? Pick a lane and stick to it. Having all your hung-up pieces on the same or similar hangers allows you to see things more clearly and without distraction, and treats all of your loved items equally, too. I recommend wooden hangers that are painted white. In my wardrobe, I can see all the pieces distinctly, and nothing is getting crushed or falling off.

"The more you can see and easily access, the harder a wider range of your wardrobe will work for you. When pieces are hidden or difficult to reach, they are far less likely to be worn, no matter how good they are," advises Lauren. "I am also a big believer in using simple wardrobe organising tools to maximise space and visibility. A belt hanger and drawer dividers are firm favourites of mine, as they keep accessories visible rather than forgotten. Small adjustments like these can completely change how often you wear what you already own."

Hanging items in order of colour, type or weight will hugely help, too. Hang all of your T-shirts together, fold all of your knitwear in order of lightweight to chunky, and perhaps roll your jeans and align them in types of wash or tone. Not only will this look visually appealing, but it will also help you make quicker decisions when getting dressed in the morning.

7. How Do I Take Care of the Pieces I Love?

"It sounds simple, but the first step is always reading the washing instructions," urges Lauren. "It baffles me how many people skip this, when it is the easiest way to extend the life of your clothes. Care labels exist for a reason, and following them makes a noticeable difference."

As someone who likes to keep their white items particularly fresh and bright (such as T-shirts, tank tops and socks), buying the right gentle detergent and adding a little bit of stain remover powder, or even baking soda, to each light wash helps keep pesky discolouration at bay.

For special pieces, Lauren has some sound advice. "I always recommend dry cleaning delicate or structured items, rather than risking damage at home. Tailored items, coats and investment garments hold their shape and finish far better when cared for properly."

Style Notes: Winter is the season of warmth and cosying up, and there are so many ways to do this within your living space. "Whether it is listening to music, reading a book, practicing mindfulness or meditation or writing a journal, one wants a clearly defined space with appropriate lighting which embraces in its womb-like surrounding, warmed by a wood-burning stove or fireplace and enveloped in blankets and cushions, away from distractions like phones and social media," says Lauren.

Try adding soft materials and new textures to your space that are rich and comforting, like bouclé, chenille or wool. The right lighting is also key, so you can avoid the "big" light and create ambience.

3. Neutral and Brown Tones

Style Notes: Palettes are getting a gentle refresh this season, too, reflecting many of the winter fashion colour trends we've spotted. "Soft, warm, earthy colours like ochre, terracotta, and burnt sienna play a big part in forming an inviting atmosphere in which to completely unwind," says Lauren.

Darker shades are also being welcomed into the mix, from chocolate brown to plum to navy. You can choose to add a new coat of paint or incorporate curtains, blankets and other textiles to create a similar effect. Smaller decorative objects are also perfect if you simply want to experiment with new, trending colours before committing.

4. Bringing Nature Indoors

Style Notes: When we're in the icy throes of winter and surrounded by barren trees, it can quickly make us miss vibrant green spaces. Indoor plants have a wonderful way of infusing this life back into our homes. Add a collection of houseplants to your kitchen windowsill, or opt for something large and sculptural like an indoor tree. Faux plants are great too, especially if you don't have the greenest of thumbs—and many looking convincingly real nowadays. There are other ways to bring the outdoors in outside of plants. Consider natural touches like wood, stone, grasses and water elements.

5. Antiques and Vintage Artwork

Style Notes: Modern tastes have taken over in the last few years, but sleek and minimal is slowly being replaced with older objects that have more meaning behind them.

"Objects tell a story, rekindle memories and offer comfort," says Lauren. "Surrounding yourself with artworks and antiques connects you with history and lives gone by, conjuring up remembrances of shared events and encounters, keeping lost loved ones near. The stories are carried within the objects, waiting to be told and retold and passed down to the next generation. Great journeys can be set upon without leaving home."

This mindset is especially pertinent for winter, when the draw to stay home often feels stronger. It also gives your home a more personalised spin, as you'll begin to form a collection of items that you feel drawn to and that have significance.

6. Pops of Colour

Style Notes: "Winter is not a time for cold, crisp, clinical colours," says Lauren. "With grey skies outside, it's important to have rich, penetrating colour inside to give your a sense of well-being."

This doesn't have to be an enormous change either—especially if you're renting. Victoria notes that prioritising smaller objects, like artwork, vases and other elements is key. She found that when she was renting, art and similar were much easier to move as opposed to furniture. "But, most importantly colourful antique pieces added so much character and warmth to the cookie-cutter spaces I found myself living in."

She also adds that, "Pops of colour really draw the eye in, add positive energy and allow the homeowner to inject pops of personality into a room."

7. The Classics

Style Notes: Ultra-modern designs and simply being chronically online have started to make everything look the same. Victoria notes that many people are leaning into classical interiors, inspired by Greek and Roman design, as a way to balance this out.

"The trend celebrates proportion, symmetry and craftsmanship, offering a visual antidote to the fast-paced, cookie-cutter modern aesthetic," she says. "Feminist retellings of Greek myths have never been more popular, and they just keep getting better and better, and I believe the trend in books has massively helped bolster the classical aesthetic."

You can embrace this through artwork, pottery inspired by different periods and with the types of designs and patterns you choose to incorporate.

8. Curtains

Style Notes: I'm always interested in finding new ways of using elements that already exist in my home. Or finding a versatile way to use a piece of furniture or a textile that isn't necessarily its primary use. That's certainly the case now with window treatments.

“Curtains are no longer confined to the role of window dressing—they’ve become a versatile design statement," says Rebecca. "When chosen thoughtfully, they merge form and function beautifully, transforming the atmosphere of a room while adding a sense of theatre and intimacy."

She recommends incorporating them as a way to divide your living space or to create a cosy nook. Even hanging them against a wall can add texture and dimension to your room.

9. Silver and Mirrored Accents

Style Notes: One thing I've been noticing more and more across my social channels is a love for silver and mirrored finishes. They're cropping up in two ways: One, as metallic mugs, trays and décor that are modern and elevated. This is perfect for design minimalists or anyone leaning into Scandinavian and sleek interiors.

Then, there's the more characterful approach that's antique-inspired. Rebecca says, "The gently weathered patina is more than just a surface detail—it’s a narrative, a visual story that connects past and present. Each imperfection catches the light differently, adding depth and movement while softening reflections with a romantic haze."

She says you can bring these into a room with smaller details, like antique mirrors, or through larger elements, like accent walls and splashbacks.

The French are known the world over for their style—effortless fashion, perfectly imperfect hair and that innate ability to make even the simplest outfits look chic. Lately, I’ve discovered that this sensibility extends well beyond their capsule wardrobes. While decorating parts of my own house, I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to the way Parisians dress their homes. There’s a certain confidence in their interiors, a mix of ease and intention that feels both lived-in and elevated all at once.

Parisian homes don’t follow trends for the sake of them. Instead, they tend to layer personality, history and a sharp eye for detail. So, along with scrolling, saving and screenshotting inspiration from some of the city's flats and townhouses, I’ve also spoken to an interiors expert about the key homeware trends French tastemakers are leaning into right now.

Having recently designed the interior of one of Paris's most stylish new hotels, Le Jardin de Verre, Locke's design director Finn Wilkie is well versed in making a space feel more French without veering into cliché or predictable territory. So who better to ask for ways in which I can add some of that charm to my traditional semi-detached property?

1. Clash Vintage and Modern

Rather than sticking to one era, stylish Parisians are combining sleek modern pieces with antiques and vintage finds. It makes a space feel curated rather than decorated—and I love how it gives every item a sense of purpose.

"One of the biggest current trends in Parisian interiors is eclecticism in style; contemporary pieces juxtaposed with antiques," says Wilkie. "The result is a personal and layered aesthetic that feels collected over time rather than executed at once."

2. Layer Your Textures

Parisians are adept when it comes to layering texture—bouclé sofas with Berber rugs, linen curtains next to polished chrome. The result is tactile, rich and far from flat.

"Another key trend is sensory materials chosen not purely for their visual effect but to engage the body through tactile experience," says Wilkie. "Materials like velvet, linen and silk evoke feelings of comfort, intimacy and luxury, drawing attention to the materiality of the space itself."

3. Try a Romantic Palette

Soft pinks, pale yellows and chalky blues are being used to add lightness and warmth to homes in Paris. These gentle tones feel more grown-up than sugary sweet and they pair beautifully with natural woods and stone also favoured by the city's stylish dwellers.

"In contemporary Parisian interiors, pastel hues are used as form of romantic nostalgia," says Wilkie. "A reference to the French Rococo period’s celebration of lightness and grace, pastels lend an interior a gentle elegance and act as a counterpoint to heavier tones and textures."

4. If in Doubt, Stick to Neutrals

If pastels aren't your thing, rest assured cream, taupe, biscuit and greige are going nowhere. French interiors often begin with a restrained, neutral base and build character through form, texture and contrast.

"The use of neutrals can be seen as reflection of the underlying Parisian sense of restraint and simplicity," says Wilkie.

5. Add Deco Lighting

As I've already elaborated, Parisians know how to blend the old with the new (more on that in a moment). However, they seem to have a particular penchant for Deco-inspired lighting, a statement light can instantly elevate even the most minimal of rooms. Think fluted glass, brass finishes and sculptural shapes.

"If you want to make your home look more Parisian, concentrate on timeless design rather than the latest style—Art Deco lighting is a popular choice," says Wilkie.

Even in the most contemporary apartments, I’ve noticed that French decorators love to weave in one or two period pieces—whether it's an ornate mirror, an antique fireplace or even making classic cornicing pop with contrasting colours.

"Period furniture and French provincial pieces are key to Parisian style—through these kinds of items, you can create a sort of cultral prestige, which is something I see in a lot of French homes," says Wilkie.

Style Notes: Thanks to the rise and rise of the coquette aesthetic, the far-reaching influence of the hyper-feminine has extended beyond fashion and shown up in our tablescapes too. Bows are still having a moment (and expect to see much more of them this Christmas), but a less sugary-sweet take on the trend leans heavily into the vintage and antique, particularly ornate silverware and trinkets paired with taper candles and champagne bowls. Style Notes: Is it fair to call checkerboard print the avocado on toast of the interior design world? After using my home as a cocoon for the past few months, it's only now, with the sun starting to filter through the windows once more, lightening up corners that have felt dark and cosy during the winter, that I realise that my interiors could use a little tender loving care. To be fair, I am still living in the midst of a year-long renovation, but I understand why anyone might want to give their surroundings a small refresh for the new season, regardless of the finish state of their home.

This doesn't mean you need to call in the developers or consider a loan—there are small many ways you can breathe new life into your surroundings that can drastically alter how they look and feel. Of course, if you're feeling up to the task, one of those solutions might be to dust of your brushes and give that wall you've been staring at a lick of paint (more on the colours to consider for this endeavour in a moment). "Some people call it Balletcore, but it’s more than that," says Spiteri. "The New Pretty takes the muted pastels, chalky neutrals and curved edges of Balletcore and gives it a 2024 edge with ruffles, sheers, frills and a dash of '90s modernism. It’s romantic and ethereal, yet also contemporary and fresh. It feels Mittel European and sophisticated and we’re seeing it everywhere in the new furniture and fabrics collections."

2. Magnolia 2.0

"Forget 'off white', it’s stark and it’s cold. Look instead to warm, yellow-toned beiges—you’ll instantly create a cocooning space," suggests Spiteri. "We’ve been brought up to view them as boring and bland but the reality is that they’re cosy and chic. It’s best used with organic shapes and textural materials. I’ve recently used Farrow & Ball’s Jitney in my bedroom in and, yes—it’s incredibly cosy. And stylish."

"Rich, red wine-like hues have become the go-to with leading designers wanting to work a moody, luxey vibe," says Spiteri. "If you’re planning to use burgundy on walls, consider colour drenching and continue the colour on to the ceiling—or go for a lovely soft pink on the ceiling which is always flattering. In any case avoid white as this will contrast too much with the walls."

"We’re still obsessed with fluffy, snuggly, sheepskin-like chairs and sofas," admits Spiteri. "It started with bouclé but this shaggier pile is the next step. The material gracefully ages over time, and works particularly well with textural plaster walls. This trend works best in a neutrals context."

"The modern take on folk comes down to layering colour, pattern, embroidery and embellishment and leaning into the handmade look," explains Spiteri. "Inspired by traditional folk art, the style sees lively yet borderline naïve patterns that often feature mythical beasts or fairytale figures mixed with graphic lines. British-based Swedish designer Beata Heuman does it well."

As much as I love it when someone compliments my outfit or my manicure, there's something so lovely about when someone compliments your home. Although I'm currently renting, I like to make my flat feel as chic and cosy as possible, and nothing does that quite like an expensive-smelling candle. As a beauty editor, I've tried my fair share of candles over the years from the likes of Diptyque and Jo Malone, but I truly believe that you don't have to spend a fortune in order to make your home smell luxurious. I'm a big fan of affordable candles from high street stores such as H&M and Zara, and I often find that these are the ones that my friends and family comment on when they walk through the door.

I'm a huge fan of Jo Malone candles, so when I saw this Blush Peony candle on Marks and Spencer's website, I was immediately intrigued. Not only does it look chic, but it smells super luxurious thanks to the uplifting, floral notes.

4. Diptyque Vanilla vs. Beauty Pie The Birthday Candle

Vanilla is such a great scent to have in your home thanks to the warm and comforting aroma that it gives off. Diptyque's candle is a personal favourite of mine, but after smelling Beauty Pie's alternative, I might have found my new go-to. It really does smell like a vanilla birthday cake, with hints of fresh bergamot and freesia giving it an expensive edge.

5. Byredo Cotton Poplin vs. Zara Absolute Linen

Who doesn't want their home to smell like freshly-washed linen? Byredo's Cotton Poplin candle features light, airy notes of chamomile, lemon and cedarwood, and Zara has an incredible alternative that features zesty tangerine and fresh iris.

6. Christian Dior Ambre Nuit vs. Zara Dark Amber

In my opinion, any candle or perfume that features notes of amber smells so luxurious. Christian Dior's Ambre Nuit candle is definitely more of a treat, but if you don't want to break the bank, Zara also do an amber-scented candle that is beautifully balanced with sandalwood, cedarwood and ylang-ylang.

7. Carrière Frères Tomato vs. Woodwick ReNew Tomato Leaf & Basil

One of my most unique (and most complimented) candles is the tomato scent from Carrière Frères. It has a beautifully sweet, ripe aroma, but I tend to use it sparingly so that it doesn't go to waste. Luckily for me, Woodwick do a tomato leaf and basil-scented candle that sounds just as delicious and looks just as chic.

8. Bamford English Lavender vs. H&M Dusty Lavender

Bamford is one of my go-to brands for relaxing scents that make my home feel like a spa, and I like to burn this lavender one in my bedroom before going to sleep. So, you can imagine my delight when I saw that H&M also do a lavender-scented candle for just £10. Alongside the soothing notes of lavender, this candle also contains fresh bergamot and smooth sandalwood, making it the perfect affordable option if you like calming, soothing scents.

I've been renovating my house for two years—to the naked eye, it might not look like a lot has changed, save for some new flooring and fresh paint on the walls. However, under the surface, there's a lot more that's been going on. Cue an unexpected, full-house rewire (which meant an unexpected, full-house replaster), a sneaky lead-pipe situation that forced some of our newly laid flooring right back up again, and more DIY mishaps than there are aisles in B&Q.

Whilst all this has been testing, to say the least, the thing keeping me on course is my creative vision. Sure, I might not have the actual funds to furnish said house right now, but that doesn't mean I can't keep dreaming up beautiful interior moments in my head. I could talk interiors all day and often do—my poor colleagues have listen to my woes and affirm my design decisions all day long.

I've been sending them link after link asking, "What do you think of this?", or suggesting pieces I've spotted that I think they'd like themselves ("This would look gorgeous in your living room."). As such, it was mutually decided that I would start a Who What Wear first—a rolling homeware column—so I could live out my décor fantasies and afford my colleagues some peace. A win-win, so they say.

Whilst I won't claim to be a professional interior designer, my 13 years as a fashion editor means I have a trained eye for stylish pieces, as well as the ability to identify items that go beyond whatever the current trend cycle may be—something that's especially important when it comes to interiors. For some reason, buying something for the home always feels like more of an investment than doing the same for your wardrobe, doesn't it?

Since moving house, I've become obsessed with luxury candles. In fact, I've made it my mission to have a candle proudly on display in each corner of my home. Not only do they look great, but they make my house smell super expensive and earn me so many compliments whenever my friends or family pop round for a coffee. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m something of a fragrance obsessive in all its forms—perfumes, body mists and, of course, candles. I have an embarrassingly large collection on hand at all times and I burn through them at a frankly alarming rate, regardless of the season. Call me basic, but when it comes to candles there is one aroma that I'm always drawn to when scenting my home: vanilla. If there’s one thing I love about summer, it’s hosting. Gathering friends and family is the essence of the sunnier season for me. In winter, I have a habit of hunkering down, but summer is for socialising. Living in London, I often yearn for the components of overseas destinations: Consistently good weather, local cuisines and, of course, varied cultures are always a pleasure. Despite being a relatively avid traveller, there is one place that has remained close to my heart: Italy. Loving the Italian lifestyle is not unique to me—countless internationals want to inhabit the Italian lust for life, flair for flamboyant fashion and delightful Mediterranean dishes. I find myself particularly looking to the Italian way of life when I’m hosting. Whether I’m incorporating the Amalfi colour palette (think zesty-lemon yellows set against the bold turquoise of the sea) into my tablescape or cooking regional food, I always try to bring an element of "la dolce vita” into my home. And one way to do this is with Malfy Gin.

Inspired by the lifestyle, colours and flavours of the Amalfi Coast, Malfy Gin draws on quintessential elements of Italian culture, from the design of its bottles to the botanical flavours of its drinks. For my Italian feast, I invited two friends who also have a deep love for the country. Who What Wear contributor Lily Russo-Bah is half Italian, or as she told me with recent DNA heritage results in mind, "more Italian than English as my mother is so mixed.” Lily’s work as a fashion stylist and editor has been massively influenced by her roots, and she has many anecdotes of her experiences in the country. (We’ll get to those—stay tuned). My other guest was Kirthanaa Naidu, who you may already know from Instagram, where she posts a lot of her work as a creative director and stylist. (If you don’t follow her, I implore you to do so immediately.) She also has a deep passion for Italian cuisine. "It’s undoubtedly one of my all-time favourites to cook and indulge in! It’s my go-to when hosting friends, as it’s always a crowd-pleaser,” she said. I mean, really, who doesn’t love Italian food?

To celebrate our shared love of hosting, especially with Italian food and drink, I organised a long lunch to get us all together to swap tips, tricks and stories on the very best of Italy, from its fashion to its food to, of course, its gin. By using a range of Malfy’s gins, I was able to create three unique drinks: an aperitivo upon arrival, a cocktail to pair with our meal and a digestivo later in the evening. With the help of Kirthanaa’s culinary expertise, I paired each drink with food and snacks that complemented its flavour. So if you want to bring a touch of Italy to your home when hosting this summer, here are our insider tips from the food and fashion industry’s experts.

It was a warm spring day, so I wanted to welcome my guests with something refreshing and fairly light on arrival. A gin and tonic is a great aperitivo because it’s so quick to make. When your guests first arrive, you’re excited to see each other and full of chat, so the last thing you want to do is to be stuck in the kitchen or lingering around the bar agonising over a drink recipe when everyone else is gossiping on the sofa. Whilst a G&T is a classic cocktail in the UK, I wanted to give ours an Italian twist. First of all, I chose one of my favourite short glasses to serve them in—I love these for this drink specifically because the pink hue of the gin and grapefruit contrasts the green-turquoise detail of the glass, which is also reflected in my kitchen furniture (pink sofa, green cushions). It might be a minor detail, but the coordination pulls everything together, and my guests always want to take a photo!

For the recipe, you want to have 3 parts tonic (I only use Mediterranean Fever Tree) for every 1 part gin (50ml of gin to 100ml of tonic). I opted for Gin Rosa, and immediately Kirthanaa, the flavour connoisseur, noted that "the combination of the light and crisp gin, the tangy grapefruit, and the aromatic rosemary was the ideal drink to set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. It was fresh and light.”

Top tip: If you prefer a dry G&T, swap out the Malfy Con Rosa for Malfy Originale and the grapefruit wheel for a lemon.

The emphasis for this meal was on sharing plates that incorporate only the freshest seasonal ingredients. With the help of Kirthanaa, I created a classic Italian feast that comprised of focaccia accompanied by anchovies and lemon, a selection of Italian cold cuts, burrata cheese paired with blood orange and purple basil, and sardines complemented by lemon zest and olive oil. I also made a radicchio salad, a fennel and olive salad, and asparagus, spring peas and watercress served with tonnato sauce. These are all light and colourful, so they not only look great placed together but are also easy to pick at as the day goes on. According to Kirthanaa, this feast style of food allows you to save time on preparation: "What I adore about Italian cuisine is that I can create large platters of food that are not only impressive but also easy to prepare ahead of hosting. This menu is just the thing for a group lunch that won’t weigh you down!” As much as I love hosting, I’m sure I’m not alone in finding myself running around in the days leading up to the occasion.

Whilst the three of us lead busy lives and want to save time where we can, Lily noted that older generations in Italy enjoy the process and time taken to prepare a meal for their family or friends. "My grandmother’s generation really took great care and time over what they were preparing,” she explained. "I always remember reading a book at school called Like Water For Chocolate about how when you cook with love, something magical happens—and it has always made me think of Italians, and in particular, my family.” Our relationship with this type of food is intrinsically linked to our memories. Our taste is powerful and nostalgic, so when we cook for our loved ones, we are automatically cooking with love. This is a sentiment that will stay with me. Thanks for the pertinent reminder, Lily!

Top tip: It will come as no surprise that the best Italian dishes are made with authentic Italian ingredients. If you’re not heading there anytime soon (Lily confessed that she always brings an extra suitcase to Italy for Mulino Bianco biscuits and cakes and a local Puglian cheese called Cacioricotta), then head to your nearest Italian deli.

As I served the main course, Kirthanaa made Malfy La Dolce Vita Spritz, which was a perfect pairing to complement the meal. "The hint of juniper and blood orange combined with the Italian orange in the gin was refreshing and added a burst of flavour,” she said. The spritz was made using Malfy Con Arancia (35ml), Prosecco (50ml) and San Pellegrino Limonata (50 ml). She stirred it repeatedly to mix the different elements (but you must do so gently so the Prosecco doesn’t fizz everywhere), and then she garnished the glass with blackberry, pink grapefruit and thyme, which elevate the herbaceous and fresh flavours of the cocktail. People often look to wine for a main meal, but I think a Prosecco and gin cocktail is a welcome alternative. It’s less heavy, and a little fizz always feels celebratory. But what does "la dolce vita” actually mean? For Lily, it’s "all about enjoying life, whether that is with your family, friends, enjoying the weather, food, drinking, the architecture, cars, the beach, or the mountains. There really is beauty in everything in Italy, and recognising and appreciating this is the essence of ‘la dolce vita!’”

Top tip: I love to freeze my blackberries before making the spritz so the drink stays extra cool.

It’s no secret that Italians love design. Their attention to detail, love of colour and appreciation for creativity is seen in so many facets from fashion to food to architecture. As a fashion editor hugely inspired by her English-Italian heritage, Lily knows too well that Italians know how to dress. "No outfit is accidental. Everything is carefully thought out, and accessorising is essential. Italians love colour, and that has definitely come through my parents’ style and rubbed off onto me,” she said while wearing a Kitri dress printed with plates filled with lemons, sardines and olives, which couldn’t have been more on theme. "Even at the beach, my mother would always have a different bikini with a matching kaftan, earrings, hair clip, sandals—you name it. My dad, on the other hand, used to only wear embroidered tunics over flares with jewellery. Now his style is more classic, but his Italian heritage runs deep. His wardrobe is a riot of colour from bright striped shirts to pastel cashmere sweaters, with a pair of trousers to match every possible colourway.” This celebration of colour is intrinsic to Italian styling and something Kirthanaa and I love to indulge in when decorating our tables. The table linens, glassware, flatware, flowers and every other aspect should be curated to complement the food and drinks being served. You can always draw "inspiration for colour palettes from the season and the available flowers during that time of year,” noted Kirthanaa. For our meal, I looked at the quintessential Amalfi turquoise for the table linen and built a palette theme around that.

Top tip: If you want to take your colour matching up a notch, opt for flowers that also blend in. Icelandic poppies in this rich orange and pink palette complement the grapefruit and rose tones of the gin, as well as my embroidered coasters.

Later in the evening, as the sun began to set, I took my guests inside and into our snug. The darker interiors are atmospheric and moody, and I love to serve dessert and a digestivo there. Negroni with Malfy Originale is my all-time favourite cocktail. It’s the perfect blend of bitter and sweet. People always say that you have to try a Negroni a few times before you know if you like it. Sometimes, your first sip can take your breath away a little, but after a few tries over different occasions, you’re a Negroni lover. To create this, you want a tumbler and lots of ice. You mix 35ml of gin with 25ml of an Italian bitter aperitif and 25ml of sweet vermouth. Stir continuously until thoroughly mixed, and add a half slice of orange. For such a classically Italian cocktail, I wanted a classic Italian dessert, so of course, I made tiramisu. I love how ’80s tiramisu is, and the rich and creamy texture is a perfect sweet treat at the end of a meal. By this point, my guests were serving themselves dessert as I made the drinks. And according to Kirthanaa, "It was the ideal way to end the night on a high note!”

Top tip: The best glassware can be found on holidays in Italy. Whilst I love antique linens and crystal glasses found in flea markets, Kirthanaa loves to collect Murano glass for its unique colour patterns.

We've all experienced a moment when a fragrance transported us to a certain place and time, and perfume is the easiest way to travel without stepping on a plane. Indeed, our memories and the scents that accompany them are strongly entwined. "Our sense of smell is the strongest of our five senses," says Jo Malone CBE, fragrance expert and founder of Jo Loves. "Our memory and our sense of smell sit side by side and are very close to the olfactory part of our brain, which is why certain fragrances can take you back to a very specific moment in time." Indeed, one spritz and your eau de parfum can become your passport. "You are not just teleported to that time, but you can feel the emotion around that memory, which is incredibly clever," says Malone. "You are almost sitting back in that same moment, from the music that you hear to the food you eat. That is how fragrance can allow you to travel around the world within four walls."

While I'm all for those fragrances that have strangers running after me to ask what I am wearing, there is something truly special about having a scent that is personal to you. This is why the perfumes we wear when we travel can become the ultimate holiday souvenir that lasts a lifetime. I personally like to choose a different fragrance to wear whenever I travel somewhere new. When I'm back home and the post-holiday blues take hold, I can reach for the fragrance again and be back there again for a fleeting moment. "I always think it's great to buy a fragrance from the country that you are visiting," says Malone. "It's not just a souvenir, but it reminds you of that very special trip and memory."

There are plenty of ways to maximise your fragrance while you're away. "When you are choosing and wearing a scent, you should also look at the outfits you are packing," recommends Malone. "If you're packing crisp white shirts, take a cleaner scent like Jo Loves Pomelo (£115) or Jo by Jo Loves (£115). If you have a wonderful evening dress, then bring something more powerful like Jo Loves Ebony & Cassis (£115). I always match my scent to the events and clothes that I will be wearing them at," she says. In fact, Malone says fragrance can become your greatest accessory. "Spray the fragrance on your clothes, your diary, your bed sheets—everything around you! It's a great way to remember your holidays and the things you did on that trip," she adds.

As for travelling with your fragrance, there are plenty of ways to optimise your packing. Malone recommends travel-sized vials or discovery sets if you're short on space. "They are small enough to fit in your hand luggage, and it means you can bring a few different scents with you so you can mix it up depending on what you're doing," she says. "I use fragrance very extensively, so I will also bring a 100-millilitre bottle of my favourite fragrance with me and pack them all in my trainers so that they are well protected. What's also great to do is lining your case with tissue paper before spritzing the paper with your go-to scent and laying your clothes on top," she says. "When you arrive and open your case, all of your clothing will smell divine."

"The minute I first spritzed Tom Ford's Eau Soleil Blanc, I felt like I was instantly on a tropical vacation (with a mai tai in hand, of course). There are so many delicious notes to call out that are featured in this scent, but I'll start with the creamy coco de mer and floral notes of ylang-ylang, tuberose and jasmine. It's easy to imagine that this combination of notes brought me back to my recent 30th birthday trip to Hawaii. Hawaii is one of the most beautiful, peaceful and magical places I've ever been. The island of O'ahu is also packed with rich-smelling botanicals that are present in every drink and item of clothing you can imagine there. Rounding out this delicious fragrance (and giving it somewhat of an edge) are notes of pistachio, Moroccan orange flower and radiant citrus. It's definitely more of a spring/summer fragrance for me, but now that the weather is warming up, I couldn't be more excited to whip it out and feel like I'm right back in Hawaii. 

"In the best way possible, this scent also reminds me of the beach and sunscreen. Okay, hear me out. I know no one wants to smell like actual suncream, but that's the beauty of wearing a solar fragrance. It makes you think of the sun, sand and your favourite SPF without actually making you smell it. Longevity is an important factor for me when it comes to choosing a fragrance, so that's yet another reason it has fast become a favourite of mine. "Perfume has a particular place in my heart. The month of Ramadan, which is observed annually by millions of Muslims, takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed through fasting and taking increased time for prayer, self-reflection and charity. As we approach the end of the month, with the last 10 days being the most significant, Muslims around the world are increasing their focus even more as we try to make the most of these blessed days.

However, it is also a time to start looking ahead to Eid al-Fitr, the festival which marks the end of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr, which translates to "the Festival of Breaking Fast" is a time to celebrate with loved ones, dressing up in new clothes and hosting traditional dinners. Is anyone else frantically decluttering their home now that spring is here? I don't know what it is about the sunnier weather, but it instantly makes me want to refresh my space for the season ahead. "I think that much of the design trends for 2023 will be based on longevity and function, focussed less on 'what's in' and more on 'what's right for my family and my home, with lots of people looking to nature, the environmental impact of design, and the mood and atmosphere their decisions create," says interior designer and expert Toby Perryman-Payne.

"Clashing your prints is something that happens almost naturally in the spaces of those conscious of living more sustainably and resourcefully but is now being noted by larger designers and furniture manufacturers. Use a playful mix of ginghams, painted dinnerware and decorative candle sticks in coloured glass to create a joyful mood perfect for entertaining, which is going to be all the more important for our customer in 2023," says Sarah O'Sullivan, home designer at John Lewis & Partners.

"A trend that’ll carry into 2023 is the consideration for a layered lighting design in homes, which is much like one you’d find in a boutique hotel or country manor. From pendants, floor lamps, downlighters, table and wall, the atmosphere a carefully considered lighting strategy can create is astonishing—something I think lots of people are only starting to realise," says Perryman-Payne.
