If you’re shopping for a new pair of sandals right now, you’d be forgiven for thinking that '90s-inspired flip-flops are the only trend that matters. Dominating new-in sections and peppering Instagram feeds, these barely-there styles have become the defining shoe of the summer. But if you’re not entirely convinced by fashion’s buzziest trend, allow me to point you in the direction of a sandal silhouette with genuine staying power, and a glowing endorsement from none other than Victoria Beckham.

Spotted in sunny Ibiza, Beckham skipped the season’s ubiquitous flip-flops in favour of an eternally chic pair of Hermès Oran sandals (£650). One of my favourite parts of being a beauty editor is testing nail polishes. From OPI and Manucurist to Chanel and Essie, I've become somewhat obsessed with finding the chicest nail polish shades and the best nail polish formulas to rival a gel manicure.

However, one nail polish brand that I have yet to try is Hermès. I've tried a handful of Hermès beauty products, from its perfumes to its makeup, and I've had my eye on the nail enamels ever since they launched. And finally, I've got my hands on a couple of the shades.

It's safe to say this may be the most luxurious nail polish that has ever graced my nails. But at £46 per bottle, I wanted to really put it through its paces, because for that price, I have very high standards. I put some of the nail polish shades, including the base coat and top coat, to the test over the past week to find out how they fare. Scroll ahead for my honest thoughts.

The Packaging

The first port of call is the packaging. We have to talk about it. The Les Mains Hermès Nail Enamels are, without question, the chicest nail polishes I've ever seen. They even come in their own orange Hermès box, which makes them a particularly great gift for an Hermès lover or anyone who dreams of one day owning a Birkin and wants to own a small piece of the luxury brand.

When you open the box, the nail polishes themselves are a thing of beauty, too. With brushed gold accents and the Hermès emblem embossed on the brush lid, everything looks and feels incredibly premium. A great first impression.

The Formula

For £46, I was surprised to find that Hermès doesn't particularly tout any nail-enhancing or strengthening ingredients in the formula for either its Nail Enamels or the Top Coat. However, the Base Coat contains resins from the mastic tree to strengthen nails within its milky-white consistency to help prep the nails.

That being said, these nail polishes basically apply like a silk Hermès twilly—glossy and satiny to the touch. The consistency of the polish is just right. It's not too thin and watery, nor too thick and gloopy. Instead, it applies evenly onto the nails. The brush is thoughtfully designed with a rounded shape that fits snugly into the base of your nail bed, so you can easily cover your nails in a thin veil of pigment in one or two strokes.

Some shades, like some of the lighter pinks, are sheer polishes, so depending on your preferences, you may prefer to wear two or three coats here. Other shades that are more opaque look perfect with two coats. The formula is really glossy, and I found that it dries quickly. However, if you're layering up some of the sheerer shades, I'd recommend waiting a little longer for them to fully dry in between, as I did smudge my nails on a few occasions. That being said, I didn't experience it with the more opaque colours that only needed one or two coats. These dried a lot faster.

I tested the shades Rose Porcelaine, a sheer light pink and Brun Bistre, a dark chocolate brown, and prepped both manis with the Base Coat and finished with the Top Coat. I'm quite heavy-handed, and I found these held up pretty well over three or four days before they started to chip. However, I noticed that it chipped a lot faster without the top coat.

The Shades

The shades are all named after the shades you see on Hermès enamel bracelets. Naturally, being Hermès, they're all as beautiful as the next. But what's brilliant is that out of the 24 shades (a nod to Hermès' historic address, 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in Paris), there's something for everyone.

There are sheer pinks to suit minimalists and classic reds to suit traditionalists, but there are also a handful of playful colours too. I'm fond of Brun Bistre, a brown nail colour that's perfect for the colder seasons, while Rose Porcelaine is a pretty sheer pink nail polish that adds just a touch of colour to the nails, but can be layered for a more milky consistency. However, you can also find more playful shades, such as Vert Écossais with its luxe, dark green tones or Orange Boîte, a bright Hermès orange.

The Verdict

Having tried Hermès Les Mains Hermès Nail Enamels and put a handful of the shades through their paces over the past week or so, I have some thoughts. Of course, it would be remiss of me not to address the price tag. At £46, these are premium, super-luxurious nail polishes. I do feel the overall experience of the packaging and application is a fair reflection of the price point. They're ultra-luxe to hold, look at and use, with a silky formula that dries into a glossy lacquer. Have I tried other drugstore nail polishes that last just as long (Essie's Gel Couture Nail Polishes, I'm looking at you)? Yes. But do they set my heart racing as much as Hermès' nail polishes do? Probably not. And I think that's part of the thrill.

Of course, the Birkin and Kelly are both based on chic fashion icons of yore, and are certifiably Hermès' most well-known styles, but, as highlighted in the eBay search data, there’s so much more to the brand than these pieces.

As anyone who is familiar with the brand can attest, purchasing an Hermès bag can be arduous. It’s not the case that you can walk into your nearest boutique and pick one up off the shelf. The purchasing process is the stuff of legend, as owners are rumoured to have endured long wait lists and be required to have maintained a regular purchase history with the brand to nab a bag of their own. Plus, I cannot overstate how often I'm asked, as a fashion editor, about the price of an Hermès Birkin. Those who manage to secure one join an exclusive group that shares a part of fashion history.

For the uninitiated, the Hermès Birkin was born in 1984 of a chance encounter between French-British actress and songstress Jane Birkin and then chairman of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas. Birkin boarded a flight from Paris to London carrying her wares in her signature basket bag, and as she entered the first-class cabin, the contents of her woven tote poured out. Whilst up in the air, the then 37-year-old lamented to her neighbour the struggles of finding a chic bag that could fit the essential items of a woman’s life to her neighbour. Her seat partner happened to be Dumas, and so, somewhere over continental Europe, the pair landed on the machinations of the Hermès Birkin. The rest, as they say, is history.

In 2022, the most expensive Birkin—a Birkin 30 made from speckled crocodile skin and encrusted with 18k diamond hardware—sold at auction for $450,000 (roughly $331,400). Let’s not pretend the packaging isn’t half the thrill here. Housed in a heavyweight tube with lacquered, minimalist colour blocks (mine: glossy black, creamy ivory and a glimmer of brushed gold. Other limited-edition shades have collectable, bolder colour-ways), it whispers:“If you know, you know.” It’s the kind of lipstick you’d nonchalantly whip out at an art gallery pretending you’re not low-key thrilled someone clocked it. It also comes housed in its own orange Hermès box, complete with a canvas pouch to protect your lipstick while on the go.

The texture is where Hermès flexes its luxurious craftsmanship. Inspired by the house's silk Twilly scarves, the Rouge Hermès Silky Lipstick Shine isn't your average sheer lipstick. The angled bullet hugs your lips and glides on like silk pyjamas on freshly moisturised legs—light, hydrating and impossibly smooth. It’s buildable too, which I love. One swipe bestows a translucent veil of colour; three swipes and you’ve got a polished, glossy pout that looks expensive (because at £63 a pop, it is).

Miraculously, despite its buttery texture, it doesn’t slip and slide around like some glossier formulas. It delivers just the right amount for a grown-up sheen and wears off evenly, leaving behind a soft tint. And thanks to its blend of nourishing vegetable butters and waxes, it leaves lips feeling moisturised and soft, too. It really feels like more of a tinted lip balm than a traditional lipstick. "I tried Hermès Rouge Hermès Silky Lipstick 30 Rose Gélatine," says Who What Wear UK insights analyst, Sophie Cookson. "The application of the lipstick was so incredibly smooth, it felt like putting butter on my lips. It glided on seamlessly and immediately had a good amount of pigment, so I didn't need to apply loads. It gave a glossy shine that looked natural and moisturised my lips. I would say that colour was quite pink for me, but with the right outfit it would be perfect."

There was nothing that could have prepared me for the reaction of my fellow editors when a package containing an Hermés Birkin landed on my desk at Who What Wear UK HQ.

The gasps! The touching! The collective awe! This is a bag that still commands unwavering reverence everywhere it goes, and despite being on the market for well over 41 years, it is still as coveted today as it was when it launched. My introduction to the Birkin (as I'm sure is the same for many millennials) was the episode of Sex and the City when even Samantha Jones can't get her hands on one. The implication even then was clear: the Hermés Birkin is in the upper echelons, and no waiting list or amount of sweet-talking sales staff will get you one, but with the unexpected drop of a $80 Wallmart dupe dubbed the "Wirkin" at the end of last year, TikTok is one again buzzing over the bag that is as much a status symbol as it is an accessory.

"Hermés bags are the pinnacle of luxury, and great from an investment perspective, as most models double or triple their value the minute they leave the shop floor," notes Hanushka Toni, founder of luxury preloved boutique Sellier. "It is nearly impossible to walk into Hermés and simply buy a Birkin or a Kelly. Whilst the crafts[person]ship and quality are second to none, what really makes Hermès bags so desirable is their exclusivity. That sense of rarity, combined with their timeless design and investment potential, makes them the ultimate status symbol, which is why consumers are so eager to get their hands on one."

So, is the Birkin truly head-and-shoulders above the rest, or just the product of some extremely well-thought-out marketing and endorsements? Well, prices aside, the secondhand market would suggest that similar to the Chanel Flap and Dior Book Tote, the allure of the Birkin, and in fact, of most designer handbags, no longer lies in the shopping experience alone, but the preservation of archival pieces.

"The preloved market is the best place to invest in timeless luxury pieces. When an item is on its second life, it’s a testament to the quality of its fabric and crafts[person]ship—provided it has been well cared for," adds Toni. "Buying secondhand makes investment pieces more accessible, as price points are often lower than buying new. The secondary market has completely transformed access to luxury. It allows buyers to find rare and discontinued pieces that would otherwise be out of reach without spending years building a relationship with a sales associate.

"Many designer bags even hold or increase in value over time, making them a smarter investment than buying retail, and, for those who want to experience the magic of a Hermès bag without a long-term commitment, luxury rental is also a fantastic alternative. It allows people to enjoy iconic pieces for special occasions or try different styles before making a purchase. Luxury should be enjoyed, and the resale and rental markets are making that more possible than ever."

Keen to feel the quality and road-test this iconic bag for myself, I reached out to the Sellier team and asked to spend 24 hours with the world's most famous handbag. Would it feel luxurious? How would it carry? And most importantly, would it be worth the money?

Hermés Birkin Bag Review

So, let's start off with the look and feel of the bag. There's no denying the wow factor when you slide off the dust bag to reveal the tote underneath, and given the current penchant for structured top-handle bags of a medium size and minimalist design (specifically The Row's Margaux and the Ferragamo Hug), this bag immediately ticks all of the right boxes on style.

My first stop of the day was a breakfast meeting, and the last thing I wanted to carry was a super-heavy bag that I'd have to lug around on the tube. Although the Birkin I tested isn't quite big enough for my laptop and extras, it comfortably fits my makeup bag, phone, keys, perfume, a hairbrush and my book—in other words, the essentials, without weighing me down. The clasp may have taken some initial fumbling to get open, but if ever there was a bag that you needn't worry someone could slip their hand into, it's this.

Although we may be more used to slouchier totes that you can fold up under your arm, there's something satisfying about the Birkin's rigidity. Whether it was in my locker, on the train or sitting on a coffee table, it holds its form whilst taking up minimal space. At times, I was suddenly aware that I was treating the bag like a baby (and yes, it deserved its own seat at the breakfast table), but in this colourway in particular, I'm inclined to treat the leather like a precious object. It's not buttery soft, but instead, it's a much thicker, grained leather that feels more durable—perfect for protecting the far smoother and more sumptuous suede inside. Now, that looked and smelt like pure luxury.

I got plenty of looks carrying this around, and I wondered if it was because of the bag itself, people trying to figure out whether it was real or fake or the fact that I immediately carried myself like a celebrity despite standing in a queue for a salad at lunch. Clearly, this bag unlocked the latent A-lister in me, and I'm not about to consider that a problem.

So, how did it hold up for the rest of the day? Well, given that this is not your average throw-on-and-go bag, I did spend a lot of time undoing the clasp, lifting the flap, aligning everything and fastening it again (and that's without locking it with the key, as I didn't trust myself not to lose it). It's a strong safety measure that will please many buyers, but I'm perhaps a little too impatient. By the time I make it to the evening, I'm ready to go out for drinks after work without having to swap to a different bag, and I cannot stress enough how convenient this is when I see so many commuters stuggling with a nice handbag, a tote bag and potentially a laptop bag all at once.

"On the resale market, the classic Birkin 25 in black with gold hardware or gold on gold is a sought-after item, making it a worthwhile option for collectors looking for a long-term investment," points out Toni. "Additionally, we’re seeing the classic size of the Birkin (the 35) becoming more popular amongst buyers." And for very good reason. The size is what scores the real points here, as it isn't the biggest Birkin available (that's the whopping 50), but the shallower mini 25 is just too micro to fit everything inside, making the 35 the happy medium.

Unlike many top-handle bags, the Birkin doesn't come with a shoulder strap, so if you want to switch around positions for comfort, you're looking at swapping the hand you carry it in as opposed to wearing it crossbody or on the shoulder, but as someone who never uses the extra attachments anyway, this is more of an observation than a criticism.

On close inspection, the faultless seams and joins are a clear sign of the craftspersonship that goes into these pieces. Every detail, from the colour of the thread to the embossing on the padlock, has been thought out and executed by the artisans who make every cut and stitch by hand to uniformity. It may sound like a lot, but as someone who has paid to have bags restored, handles replaced and shoes re-glued, it's reassuring to find a designer item that hasn't cut corners just to increase the markup. Every penny spent to make this bag (and believe me, it's a lot) must count for something.

Final Thoughts

It's almost impossible to ignore the eye-watering price when discussing the Birkin. It's not the kind of purchase that anyone could easily describe as "value for money", but it is an example of just how designer bags can retain their value on the resale market. Out of all of the luxury greats to stand the test of time—the saddle bag, the baguette, the Jackie—it is Hermés with the most impressive and farthest-reaching legacy, and even its sister bag, the Kelly, doesn't have quite the same pull as its younger counterpart.

The bag I loaned was one of the "cheaper" options, retailing at around £8850 secondhand, so it didn't hit the £20K benchmark like some of the rarer styles, but it still felt far too special to be an everyday bag option. If you're looking for one of the more entry-level options, go for palladium hardware over gold, Clemence leather over Chèvre leather and exotic skins and stick to sizes 35 and below—anything more sizable can send costs into five figures on reputable sites.

Is the Birkin the kind of bag you carry on the tube for your everyday commute? Absolutely not. But is it the kind of special-occasion style you can hand down to the next generation? Honestly, yes. What you may or may not consider a "wise investment" ultimately comes down to budget, and if you are a bag collector who would happily spend thousands on the latest styles from Loewe or Khaite, a Birkin feels like it has far more longevity in the long run. Whilst owning a Birkin is outside the realm of possibility for this fashion editor, I did get a buzz from this moment of proximity to fashion greatness and would happily recommend renting one for the curious.

PROS: Exclusivity, elegant design, exceptional craftspersonship, iconic legacy, roomy, lightweight, cleaning kits available (depending on colour), resale value.

CONS: Price, wearability, ease of access.

Keeping a relatively low profile, she steps out only occasionally, making each sighting feel like a rare treat. What makes these moments even more special is her impeccable sense of style. Having developed a deep appreciation for Zellweger’s style, I was delighted to see her making an appearance at a photocall in London for the release of her new film Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Making a few slight adjustments, Zellweger skipped the knee-high boots, selecting some classic black pointed-toe heels from Christian Louboutin instead. The switch lent the ensemble a lighter, more transitional feel that felt better suited to the sunny, springlike day. Adding the finishing touch, she slipped on a pair of black Persol sunglasses, lending her look a playful spin.

Chanel's Rouge Noir may just be the world's most iconic nail polish colour, and Chanel's best nail colours ever. "If you don’t know about this iconic colour then we can’t be friends," says Shelton. "This colour is probably older than I am and an icon for sure. This is the shade for A/W and if you haven’t tried it then what are you waiting for?"

The deep black cherry hue was born from Chanel's A/W 94 show when makeup artist Heidi Morawetz and Chanel's then director of makeup Dominique Moncourtois mixed a red and black pigments just days before the show to paint the model's hands, and it was an instant hit on the runway. The brand's range of nail colours are inspired by the very enamel colours you'll find among Hermès goods . So if you're pining for a Birkin or a Kelly, Hermès' Nail Enamels may help to tide you over for the time being. The most iconic shade for Shelton is Orange Boîte. "It’s a colour most would describe as the “Hermes orange” and they aren’t wrong. I love this shade so much because it looks great on everyone." What's even better is that these nail polishes also come in a mini Hermès box—so chic and great for gifting.

5. OPI Funny Bunny

Whenever I ask any nail tech or salon about their most requested and most loved nail colour shades, OPI Funny Bunny is always, always mentioned. "Funny Bunny is an iconic milky shade I think everyone should own," says Shelton. "This shade is so versatile and I love applying a couple of layers of this as it creates the perfect milky nail look." It has a sheer finish, but it can be layered to a more opaque finish, and it's a popular shade to layer with OPI Bubble Bath or topped with chrome powder for the iconic 'glazed doughnut' manicure.

6. Chanel Ballerina

Next to Rouge Noir, Ballerina is one of Chanel's most popular nail polish colours. And it's not hard to see why. It’s beautiful and a classic colour that can really make a statement." Many people are loyal to this true neutral red (the perfect balance of warm and cool undertones) which looks just as good on all skin tones, chic short nails as it does on longer lengths, and it's also an elite pedicure colour year-round. It rose to fame in the 2000s when it launched as part of OPI's New York collection and was so popular that it became a permanent colour in the brand's core collection. "This is a summer classic," says Shelton, who says this is a great shade to make your nails pop. It's more pink and orange-toned than Big Apple Red, which adds a bright and cheerful to your fingertips and toes. It dates back to 1990, when OPI co-founder went to dinner in New Orleans and tried Cajun spiced prawns for the first time.

There are so many extraordinary things in this life that money simply cannot buy. Equally, there are many extraordinary things that can only be yours after money has been exchanged. Sadly, a Birkin bag falls into the latter category. Topping the wish lists of fashion people across the globe, there may be no other material item more highly coveted than the inimitable Hermès Birkin handbag, nor harder to get your hands on. After our slightly '80s-inspired (and very loud luxury) cover spread starring none other than 2023's It girl Sofia Richie Grainge, I can't say I was surprised to find a slideshow featuring one of the era's biggest and most relevant-right-now trends pop up on her Instagram feed. That's not to say I wasn't happy to see it there, especially since I've been rallying behind the vintage outerwear's return to fame for quite some time now. If you haven't yet guessed, I'm referring to the tapered-in, gold-buttoned, big-shouldered blazers and jackets from the oft-slept-on decade in fashion that—thanks to brands like Saint Laurent, Alaïa, Schiaparelli, and more—are making a massive comeback for autumn. 

Richie Grainge, in particular, chose a highlighter-yellow take on the style, with hers featuring a military-style collar and a long-line silhouette. Though the photos, which she captioned with just a lemon emoji, don't show her entire 'fit, she appears to be wearing black jeans and carrying an Hermès Swift Kelly bag, a style that's currently on sale for over £13,000 (casual).

When I was 19, I worked in a small clothing boutique that sold a surprisingly impressive designer assortment for a college town such as mine. On the ready-to-wear side, its racks were lined with Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Lauren Manoogian, and Samuji. And for denim, we exclusively sold Frame Denim, the brand every LA and NYC fashion girl was wearing at the time. I adored every pair from the brand and too often spent my entire paycheque on jeans. 

One pair, in particular, that I bought and subsequently wore roughly three times a week every summer for years, was Frame’s Le Skinny de Jeanne style in white. When I graduated and moved to New York, I left a ton of clothing items behind, donating most of them and selling the rest. But even with all of that draped on her, the fashion item that my eyes were immediately drawn to were her jeans, the same exact pair of white Frame skinnies that I owned in college. For many of us, a new month means a new mani and with it the chance to choose a new nail colour. In my opinion, never is this choice more joy inducing than during the summer months - when the weather warms and summer stretches out before us and we can manifest that sunshine with a dopamine-inducing colourful manicure (and maybe a pedicure too, now that sandals are making an appearance).

Choosing exactly what colour to go for however is often where the difficult arises. After all, summer's nail trends have us spoilt for choice when it comes to incredible looking manicures.

"This vibrant pop of colour is all you’ll be needing this summer. It’s so beautiful and really lifts your mood. It’s a colour that will definitely make you feel summery.

"With that in mind I have recently shared a baby blue by Chanel in shade Muse and that has also been one of my go-tos," she adds. "It flatters the skin and is a great alternative for those who aren’t into strikingly bold colours. Although this is only available in lacquer, it leaves a beautiful gel-like finish."

2. Neutrals

"We’re never going to get away from neutrals," says Shelton. "Whether it’s the sheer nudes to the fully pigmented skin tone nudes, they’re here to stay. I think there’s a current obsession around being effortlessly chic that we’re now reverting back to shorter, more natural looks," she notes. "This isn’t just with nails mind you. It’s with fashion and makeup also. Less is more and I really like that." Shelton's favourite neutrals are some of OPI's classics, including Bubble Bath, Put It In Neutral, Baby, Take a Vow and Bare My Soul. "These are my go-to shades always," she says.

3. White

"White is a must for summer, especially for toes," says Shelton. "You know you’re ready for your holidays when you’ve got freshly painted white toes." Indeed, white is the ideal pedicure colour, and it will always go with any outfit, no matter what you are wearing. Plus, a bottle of white polish is ideal to keep on standby for French manis, too as well as fresh block coloured looks.

"How can we not be into pink?" asks Shelton. "It’s a feel-good colour." The best bit about pink nail polish is that you can choose from a range of shades. "Whether that’s a bright and bold hot pink or a baby pink, which I think is more in-keeping this season, it’s entirely your decision. OPI I Quit My Day Job is a beautiful pink which looks great on all skin tones. It’s the perfect shade for summer."

"Red is a classic and will forever be trending. It’s such a sexy colour that will definitely make you feel good. My top reds are Hermes Rouge Casaque. It is a super-pigmented lacquer and leaves a gorgeous high-shine finish," she says. OPI Big Apple Red and Cajun Shrimp are also amongst her favourites for summer red. "Big Apple Red is a true red and Cajun Shrimp is more of an orangey red! Both are stunning," she adds.

6. Milky

Our love affair with milky nails isn't going anywhere this month. "My holy grail for this is OPI Funny Bunny," says Shelton. In fact, this is the exact shade that celebrity manicurist Zola Ganzorigt used on Hailey Bieber's viral doughnut-glaze nails. "This is another iconic shade that is lovely for those who love white nails but just don’t want anything too bold," says Shelton.

Not a colour, but a whole look that's set to be hugely popular this month, says Shelton. While we're seeing plenty of colourful French tips, a classic white French feels fresh. "I feel incomplete if I’m not wearing French on my toes," she says. "It can look beautiful on hands too, of course, but it can make your feet just look super pretty!" And there are so many versions of French tips to try. "Pops of colour are so fun for summer, but when you’re going away on holiday and don’t have an outfit planned it's best to go for a classic French manicure as it’ll go with absolutely everything," says Shelton.

We Brits are known for our laid-back, fashion-forward take on dressing, and just about every major trend to come from the capital city in the last few years has gone global (and kick-started a few hashtags in the process). As we head further into the depths of winter, top-performing categories are without a doubt flat shoes (loafers, trainers and ballet pumps score highly) and, of course, boots (namely ankle and knee-high). Quite often, when you look at the names of nail polishes, they tend to fall in to two camps. They are either quite literal or tongue-in-cheek. OPI's Bubble Bath nods to the glossy, clean-girl finish it leaves on the nails, and it's hard to not laugh a little at the shade Tickle My France-y. Hermès, however, steers clear of this—but what else would you expect of one of the chicest names in fashion? Nothing says luxury like Hermès. Many of us have dreamed of getting our hands on one of those signature orange boxes. From hard-to-get handbags to designer footwear and expensive-smelling fragrances, the brand knows no bounds when it comes to creating sought after products in the fashion and beauty industry.

Although a Birkin bag would be nice, as a beauty editor, I always find myself drawn to the brand's stunning selection of luxury makeup. The French fashion house entered the makeup space back in 2020, and although the products haven't been around for long, they have certainly captured the attention of editors and makeup artists alike. So much so, that I have been desperate to try the makeup offerings out for myself to see if they live up to the luxury price tags.

Yes, these products don't come cheap. A lipstick will set you back a cool £62, but trust me when I say that you are getting a designer experience from start to finish. Each item comes housed in an orange Hermès box and the products themselves look almost too good to use. No, this isn't makeup on a budget, but it is luxury beauty in all its glory. I was lucky enough to get my hands on some of the brand's bestselling products, so I decided to do a full face of Hermès Beauty to really put the products through their paces. I called in a selection of products from Hermès Beauty, which I put to the test straight away. I tried everything from complexion products to mascara and lipstick, and have made sure to give my honest opinion of each product below.

The Best Hermès Beauty Products, Tried & Tested

1. Hermès Plein Air Complexion Balm

First up is the Complexion Balm. This was probably the product I was most excited to try. I'm not a huge fan of heavy foundations, but this is more of a tinted cream with both makeup and skincare benefits. The formula contains hydrating hyaluronic acid, antioxidant-rich vitamin E and soothing evening primrose extract, so it's perfect for those winter months when your skin is feeling a little dry and irritated. Oh, and it also contains SPF 30 which is an added bonus.

Now, if you like heavy coverage, then this isn't the product for you. No, it won't cover blemishes or breakouts, but what it will do is even out your complexion and give the most gorgeous, luminous-looking finish to the skin. This is the kind of base product that I would reach for on a daily basis. Not to toot my own horn, but I think my skin looked pretty great after using this. I did pop a little bit of my own concealer on my under-eyes (Hermès sadly don't have a concealer as part of their makeup line) but apart from that, this is the only complexion product I am wearing on my face.

You can definitely tell that this product contains skin-loving ingredients, as my skin felt silky smooth after applying this and the balm didn't cling to any dry patches throughout the day. All in all, I've fallen head over heels for this tinted cream.

Are there any downsides, I hear you ask? Well, for one, it's pretty expensive. But that being said, similar products from the likes of Chanel or Dior will cost you around the same amount. The only other downside is that there are currently only 13 shades to choose from, and while the brand do have a good selection of shades on their website, it would be nice to see more options in the future. I opted for the shade Ficelle, which is described as a "neutral medium beige".

Pros: Lightweight, hydrating formula and adds a luminous finish

Cons: Expensive and doesn't offer much coverage

2. Hermès Plein Air H Trio Healthy Glow Mineral Powder

Next up is the Healthy Glow Mineral Powder. First of all, can we talk about how chic it looks? The powder comes with an 'H' for Hermès, and I already dread the day that my makeup brush ruins this. The compact itself is gold and white, and comes with a large mirror in the lid which is ideal for doing your makeup on the go. This is the kind of powder that you always want to have in your handbag.

Now, it's technically a bronzer, but I opted for the palest shade and actually used this all over my face to add a healthy glow. It has a semi-matte finish but still manages to illuminate the skin and add subtle warmth. You could definitely use a couple of different shades to sculpt and contour the face, and the colour can be built up depending on your desired finish.

Similar to the Complexion Balm, this is a more minimal makeup product that will help to give your skin that lit-from-within look, rather than a statement finish. If, like me, it's your goal in life to wear makeup that doesn't actually look like makeup, you definitely need this powder on your radar.

Pros: Looks chic, packaging is easy to travel with and adds a healthy, warm glow to the skin

3. Hermès Rose Hermès Silky Blush Powder

Funnily enough, I wasn't that excited to try this product, but it ended up being the one that I loved the most. You see, I've always been more of a cream blusher kind of person. I like my cheeks to look dewy and juicy, and in my opinion, only a cream product can give this effect. However, it seems that this powder blusher was here to prove me wrong, as one swipe gave me a healthy glow that made it look as if I'd gotten a full eight hours sleep and drank a green juice for breakfast (I had in fact scrolled on my phone till 1am and woken up to a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit).

Although it has a semi-matte finish, it has this beautiful (albeit very subtle) luminosity to it that awakens your complexion. I opted for Rose Cuivré, a powerful pink with hints of gold throughout. What I loved about this shade is that one swipe gave a natural flush to the cheeks, but after a couple more applications I was able to create a more statement look. I actually used this blusher on my eyelids as well to add a hint of colour and pull everything together, and I was over the moon with the results.

The product comes in similar packaging to the powder above, with another handy mirror for applying on the go. There are currently 12 shades to choose from, and you can purchase refillable palettes which allows you to switch up the shades whenever you fancy.

Pros: Impressive colour payoff, silky smooth formula and chic packaging

4. Hermès Trait D'Hermès Revitalizing Care Mascara

Hermès currently have one mascara within their makeup range, called the Revitalizing Care Mascara. As with all of the brand's products, this comes housed in the signature orange box and has the most stunning gold packaging that you'd definitely want to have on display. It comes in a selection of shades but I chose to go for classic black, as this is the colour that I tend to wear the most.

The formula contains 97% natural ingredients and can even be used on sensitive eyes (a big plus from me). It contains nourishing shea butter and moringa butter, alongside millet seed extract which helps to protect the lashes. It has been designed to add volume, with an incredibly accurate and ultra-fine wand that coats each lash from root to tip. The result? Long, fluttery eyelashes that don't flake or transfer throughout the day. Yep, I was impressed with this product.

That being said, it's worth noting that this mascara retails for £57. While the packaging and the product are worth every penny, I do think that there are more affordable mascaras on the market that do just as good a job. I personally couldn't see myself spending £57 on a mascara all the time, but, if it's luxury you're after, then this would be my top recommendation. I also think that this would make the most special gift.

5. Hermès Rouge Hermès Matte Lipstick

Last but by no means least, let's talk lipstick. I'm not usually a matte lipstick kind of person, but I was intrigued to give the Hermès formula a go. Again, this product looked so chic, and it even had Hermès written on the bullet of the lipstick for an extra touch of luxury.

Although it is a matte lipstick, it promises a moisturising, comfortable formula, and it really delivers on this. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that this is the most hydrating matte lipstick I have ever tried (although I do always recommend applying a little bit of lip balm beforehand). It feels velvety on the skin and although it gives a matte finish, it doesn't crack or look dry. Instead, it delivers impressive colour payoff in just one stroke.

I opted for the shade Beige Naturel, a soft pink that tied in nicely with the blusher. This is another product that I can see myself reaching for on a daily basis, and although it's expensive, I can see it lasting quite a while.

Many of us are astounded at just how pricey these beautifully crafted pieces can be, but if money was no object, then an expensive arm-candy investment—and they are very often a real investment, accruing value over time—is not a bad way to spend, oh, the same amount as a deposit for a house.

The quality craftsmanship, hours put into production, fabric and fastenings (often sourced from across the globe) all contribute to a bag's price. A history, celebrity association, fashion folklore, notable collaboration and availability can also contribute toward a designer bag being worth more than any non-believer would ever be able to imagine. From the £50k Chanel minaudière to a £92k tote with cognac diamonds on the clasp, here are the most extravagant and expensive designer bags on the planet.

Hermès

Hermès will undoubtedly be the brand you think of first and foremost when it comes to bags that cost a small fortune. The Birkin handbag—inspired by Jane Birkin but now owned in multiples by the likes of Victoria Beckham and the Kardashians—is perhaps the most famous of them all. "Cheaper" Birkins start at around the £10k mark, holding their retail value by 130%. With some rarer styles (you know the kind: 18-carat gold hardware, covered in real diamonds) are known to be sold for up to £253k in auction. According to Christie's, the most expensive Hermès bags tend to be custom-created pieces that are rendered in crocodile with real gold hardware.

The Hermès family includes many other investment-worthy siblings that will likely accrue money over time: the Kelly, which was renamed after Grace Kelly fell in love with the style back in 1954 (these now fetch secondhand for anywhere between £6k and £12k); the Constance, a lesser known to the mass market but a popular crossbody choice for fashion editors (£10k); the Evelyn, perhaps one of the most "affordable" options (£1.5k); the Picotin, a slouchy tote with less noticeable branding or detailing (£2.5k); and the Toolbox, which, yes, is inspired by a toolbox and features a canvas strap (£3k to 5k).

Delvaux

Founded in Belgium in 1829, Delvaux has been leading the charge for luxury leather goods, creating the brand's first handbags around the turn of last century when the team realise women wanted to keep their "precious belongings at hand during their travels."

Highly skilled leather artisans are behind each piece, with the buckle-fronted, vintage-feeling Brilliant tote being particularly recognisable. This style is available in many classic colours and finishes (as well as eight different sizes), but celebrities tend to favour the brand's more surreal, artsy versions.

Rihanna has a see-through plastic version and one inspired by Rene Magritte, inscribed with "Ceci n'est pas un Delvaux." The latter is now available on 1stdibs for £12k. These rare designs cost significantly more than more simpler iterations (you can pick up a good-looking vintage Delvaux on Vestiaire Collective for around £800), but like all of the super-luxury bags, exotic skins will be the most-expensive options.

Chanel

Chanel's handbag offering is so vast and varied in price and style that it's hard to pinpoint just a few key investments, but you can often rest assured that whatever your purchase, it will gain value over time. Hold onto a Chanel for over 10 years, look after it well, and you've got a safe investment, according to resale experts.

Signature styles like the 2.55 or Classic bag are just as popular as the day they were born. To buy brand-new in 2018, these will set you back around £4k for a relatively unfussy iteration; the most expensive is a white crocodile Classic bag featuring 334 diamonds set into 18k gold (only 13 were ever made and each cost almost £200k). Newer additions to the daytime range include the Boy bag (a boxier crossbody that has been a favourite in the resale market and will cost you around £3.5k new) and the Gabrielle bag.

What's interesting about Chanel's bag offering is that styles with a long history are not necessarily going to be more expensive at auction than newer more OTT creations. Karl Lagerfeld has generated many a collectable during his tenure thanks to an array of novel designs. From hula hoops and milk cartons to bejewelled mini bags and Lucite robot clutches, there are countless Chanel items worthy of cult status. However, many of these beauties sit within a section called Collectors, which include items that are listed as "price upon request," which means they're super expensive.

Even more elaborate options that were created by the fine craftsman Chanel highlights during its biannual Métiers d'Art runway shows are particularly covetable. A Matryoshka evening bag from the Paris-Bombay A/W 09 collection was bought in a Christie's auction last year for just under £15k.

Bulgari

Bulgari's decorative bags are as vibrant and eye-catching as the Italian brand's sparkling fine jewels. Some of the most expensive Bulgari styles are part of the Serpenti family. Some Bulgari Serpenti purses are made from exotic skins and can cost around £10k, though pared-back leather styles can range from £560 to £2560 for a mini version.

Where things start to notch up a few extra zeros is in the evening and clutch bag realm. Some Cocktail clutch bags feature jewellery detailing with silver snake closures studded with amethysts and African jade, for example. A style like this will cost around £3.5k.

Some of the rarest Bulgari clutches are quite literally made out of gold, weighing enough to give your arms a small workout. These sculpted Melone shells sometimes come with diamonds set into them and often feature a silk tassel for good measure. There is one stocked on Vestiaire Collective for £26,820, if you're interested.

Stalvey

Stalvey is the new kid on the block. Established only a few years ago by Jason Stalvey, a neuroscientist turned designer, the mini trunk Top Handle 2.0 bags have been wildly popular among the A-list. Gigi Hadid has barely stopped carrying her cute mini bag throughout the recent round of New York Fashion Week shows, and why would she? These are 24k gold–finished, crocodile trunks and bumbags designed in real "look at me" colours. As the brand is so new that there are no real auction stats to speak of or much of a resale market, so you'll need to buy new. As far as future collectables go, I predict that the more novel creations will go up and value: a 24k Gold Crocodile Pillow (£20,952) and 24k Gold Crocodile Teddy Bear (£29,796) are currently available.

Asprey

London-based Asprey is a purveyor, by royal appointment, of home goods, jewellery, timepieces, leather goods and more. Its luxury everyday bags are all super-classic shapes and come in neutral, versatile colours: The Taylor, Polo, Wiltshire, Boxer and many more silhouettes will cost between £2.4k and £20k, depending on the leathers involved (you can pick pre-loved pieces up for considerably less on Vestiaire). Where things start to get über is in the Precious handbags department, where the brand's 167 style can be found in unusual crocodile leathers and have clasps that are fully dotted with diamonds. New versions of this style can hit around £100k.

Louis Vuitton

There are many collectable Louis Vuitton bags in the Parisian fashion house's stable: The supersized Neverfull tote is a more affordable route in and continues to be wildly popular (£920 for a classic monogrammed version). The Speedy—as favoured by Audrey Hepburn—remains an adored option (£730 in its most basic form).

Noe BB, the most recognisable bucket bag style (£855, and originally designed to carry champagne—how fabulous), is often bought vintage by fashion eds. Louis Vuitton's Alma styles are handy with their short and long handles, and often bought in the smallest size (£855)—perhaps that's no wonder when the handbag was first requested by Coco Chanel as a handheld version of a larger piece of luggage back in 1925.

Since Nicholas Ghesquière took the creative helm of the brand, new It bags have also been born. The mini trunk-style Petite Malle was one of his first big hits, and there are now elaborate versions that'll set you back around £23k, should you not want to opt for a simpler £4k piece instead. The Twist bag (featuring an ingenious LV lock) comes in countless options, from the subtle (black leather, £2.4k) to the outrageous (cerise pink crocodile, £22.9k).

One of the most expensive current options, alongside the ladylike Capucines bag (many of which you need to phone Louis Vuitton directly for to register your interest), is the above Volta backpack—considerably more than the street style–snapped mini LV logo backpacks trending right now. One of the most expensive new Louis Vuitton bags to date was a City Steamer top-handle bag rendered in crocodile and worth around the £42k mark.

Louis Vuitton not only has a heritage that adds hugely to the value of any handbag going for auction, but the brand has also collaborated with artists, architects and other notable names over the years, creating items that are bound to be collectable.

A classic set of luggage (much like the type famously owned by Elizabeth Taylor) was sold for £84k back in 2012 at Christie's. However, on the flip side, you'll find that ultra-modern collabs (like the recent pairing up with cult streetwear brand Supreme) include some of the most expensive pre-loved LV bags on Vestiaire Collective right now. In fact, you'll need £12,164 for one backpack.

One of the most talked-about and most expensive Louis Vuitton bags is the Urban Satchel, which was originally made as a spoof. Fun fact: The bag was literally crafted out of rubbish (cigarette packets, tickets, a water bottle and more). According to fashion lore, this rare piece created a bidding war between The Olsen Twins, Victoria Beckham and Anna Wintour, and is said to be worth £115k.

Cartier

Although you might associate Cartier with jewellery and watches more than handbags, the French luxury brand has a wealth of other categories on offer—including bags, sunglasses, accessories, stationery, scarves and more.

For example, the elegant C de Cartier totes come in a vast array of hues that range from £1.3k to £14.5k, depending on which size and leather you opt for. The brand's Must C range includes super-chic saddle bags, buckets and totes—all of which can be yours for approximately £1.5k.

Reflecting Cartier's iconic Panthère jewellery, there's also a Panthère line of evening bags with ultra-luxe versions reaching into the £100k mark. However, it's the Cactus de Cartier range that really amps up the wow factor, with alligator leather, yellow gold, emeralds, diamonds and carnelians being listed as the core elements of the neat design.

Even with its jaw-dropping and eye-watering value attached, the Hermès Birkin remains one of the most difficult designer bags to get your hands on because of overwhelming demand. In 2020, luxury resale site Vestiaire Collective revealed that the Birkin was one of the most in-demand bags and saw a 185% increase in sales that year.

Years on, it's risen in both interest and cost—proving once again that luxury goods can be great investments. But what exactly has given this iconic "it" piece such enduring popularity? The History of the Birkin Bag

In 1983, so the story goes, Jean-Louis Dumas—chief executive of Hermès at the time—was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. When the French-British actress's top-handle basket bag tipped over, pouring all of its contents on the floor, Dumas felt inspired to design the icon a bag that was equally as stylish as her signature style but would actually stay closed. He was so inspired, in fact, that he drew the initial design on an aeroplane sick bag (chic) right then and there. Soon after, the Birkin bag was born.

What Influences Birkin Bag Prices?

Just what is it about the Birkin bag that has garnered it such a cult following, thus making them so pricey? Exclusivity, of course. Its difficult-to-get nature and recognisability make it the perfect flashy piece for those who love the spotlight. Remember how Samantha Jones threw Lucy Liu's name around in Sex And The City just to get a red leather one of her own? (It might have cost USD $4000 in 1998, but it still had a five-year waitlist. At least that was the case for the fictionalised version of Manhattan that we've all come to know and love.)

A Vestiaire Collective spokesperson says that "several factors influence the price of a Birkin.

"Firstly, the materials used, including premium leathers and exotic skins, significantly impact the cost," they add. "Additionally, the meticulous craftsmanship and time-intensive production process contribute to its high price."

"Furthermore, the Birkin's limited availability and the brand's strategic scarcity maintain its exclusivity, driving up demand and price on both the primary and secondary markets," they continue.

The luxury resale market has seen a massive boom in the past few years, with companies like Vestiaire Collective asserting that the Hermès Birkin bag retains around 130% of its retail value at resale. The reasoning behind this? Scarcity. It's widely known that you can't just stroll into any Hermès shop and expect one of the pristine shop assistants to lift the red ropes and present you with a selection of Birkin bags to choose from.

As luxury expert and Vestiaire co-founder, Fanny Moizant succinctly puts it, "Anything that is hard to get is highly coveted, and there's a mystery around the bags, which makes them even more sought-after".

Is a Birkin Bag Actually Worth Investing In?

As we've established, Birkin bag prices are constantly changing. But is a Birkin really worth the cost? Indeed, it seems that a Birkin's worth just keeps going up. Designer re-sale platform Baghunter shared that between June 2016 and 2017, the value of Birkins on the resale market rose by 16%. Since then, Baghunter has conducted a new report, which found a growing gap between demand and supply of Birkin handbags, leading to a "mini Hermès drought” in the resale market. "With all indicators showing Hermès has not increased production of the Birkin bag, the value of the Birkin is set to spike soon,” said Evelyn Fox, co-founder of Baghunter.

Furthermore, Vestiaire Collective claims that Birkin bags have appreciated at an average annual rate of 14.2% over the past 35 years, outperforming the S&P 500 and literal gold. How Much Will a Birkin Bag Cost?

On 12 June 2019, Christie's London hosted a handbag auction featuring some of the world's most exotic finds, including an Hermès Birkin bag that sold for an unbelievable £162,500. This was one of the mostexpensive handbags ever sold at auction—the record was broken in 2018 when the Matte Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Birkin 35 with 18-karat white gold and diamond hardware went for a colossal £236,750. One has to wonder—when would a person wear a six-figure handbag? Certainly not when their personal security team takes annual leave.

When we spoke to a Vestiaire Collective spokesperson, they affirmed that resale prices can exceed these figures, with particularly rare or sought-after models fetching over £300,000. Factors such as the bag's condition, age, and provenance affect its resale value, making each Birkin Bag a unique investment. Luckily, most resale platforms have also Birkin bags that start at a significantly lower price point than 6 figures. On sites such as Vestiaire Collective, prices usually start at around £5000.

What is the Most Expensive Hermès Bag?

In 2025, history was made when Jane Birkin's original Birkin bag broke records to become the most expensive Hermès bag ever sold. After being auctioned off at Sotheby's in Paris, a private collector from Japan purchased the legendary style for £7.4 million. According to the house, the sale concluded after a "10-minute bidding war involving nine collectors bidding by phone, online and in the room".

This style was more than just being the original Birkin, as it actually served as the prototype for all subsequent pieces to come. As for the bag itself, it was presented in the slightly-beaten condition in which the musician and actor left it in, bore her monogrammed initials and even featured her nail clipper hanging from the strap—the first bag charm, if you will.

Celebrities are no strangers to the Birkin bag—surely you've seen the Kardashian squad toting their Birkins on any highly papped gym run or airport outing. Kris Jenner is said to have a whole room dedicated to her Birkins, complete with a neon sign that reads "Need money for Birkins," a sentiment we can (kind of) relate to. Kim Kardashian West even let her daughter North customise one of hers in what has to be the most expensive arts-and-crafts session of all time.

Ashley Olsen is another celebrity who is often seen dashing around with a Birkin in the crook of her arm, as is Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio. The term "investment buy" gets bandied around a lot in the fashion world. Sure, classic camel coats and well-made shoes will see you through many years, but they're only an investment in terms of how often you'll wear them. It's unlikely you'll make much when reselling a pair of worn-out loafers.

This is why you really can put "bag" and "investment" in the same sentence. Some designer bags will even increase in value (we're looking at you, Hermès) as they patiently sit in a dust bag at the back of your wardrobe because of the waiting lists for new styles, which we can attribute to the time and craft needed to bring a single, say, Birkin to life. Other styles, such as Chanel's 2.55, just never date.

According to resale site Open for Vintage, more and more high-end designers are looking to the archives to inspire new-season designs, sparking a wave of consumers to head online to find pre-loved styles. "Vintage versions of the season's It trends become the purse-friendly option with a much lesser environmental impact," the site reports.

So which brands have the biggest resale value and therefore are sound investments? We posed this question to Nicola Ghin, authentication manager and resident designer handbag expert at The Luxury Closet. "The best performing brands for resale value on the secondhand market right now are Hermès, Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton. Brands like Prada, Gucci and Fendi offer extremely trendy options, but some styles aren't as reliably rewarding when it comes to their resale value—you need to choose wisely," says Ghin. "Trends and icons are two different things. The Fendi Baguette and Gucci Bamboo bags might be some of the hottest pieces to buy right now, but in the long run, Birkins and Chanel's Classic Flaps will always lead in terms of most desirable and best to invest in on the secondhand market."

Of course, any designer handbag purchase is a big one, and maybe you like the idea of rationalising the price by thinking about its eventual resale yield. Still, perhaps this shouldn't be your priority, says Ceanne Fernandes-Wong, the CEO and co-founder of Cocoon, the UK's first membership subscription service for luxury bags. "Buy a bag you love. If you're lusting after a vintage Chanel Diana, don't buy a Caviar Flap bag just because you think it will have a better resale value. Chances are if you're truly lusting after a bag, you will want to keep it for years to come." Wise words. And she has some more inspired suggestions on how to go about finding the perfect investment bag for yourself.

"As purchasing a handbag is a significant investment, it's a smart idea to 'test-drive' bags via a service like Cocoon so that you can make a truly informed decision," says Fernandes-Wong. "You will get a real sense for whether a particular brand is worth the investment or if a style is right for your needs. Finding out a bag is too heavy, you don't like the quality or it doesn't fit is a costly realisation to make post-purchase. You can also get a sense of how a bag will wear over time, especially if it's vintage or an older style, and that may influence your decision, too, as new doesn't always equal best."

1. Louis Vuitton

"Probably the most recognisable and iconic monogram of all time, Louis Vuitton is synonymous with the world of high-end handbags," says Ghin. "Not every design has the same appeal, and not all Louis Vuitton purchases will mean a healthy resale value—your best bets are the Métis, Pochette, and seasonal Speedys such as cérise, multicolour and denim. These are consistently in demand, and selling them means earning between 20% to 50% more than what you originally paid." Open for Vintage is in agreement with Ghin and has revealed that sales of Louis Vuitton handbags made up a whopping 35% of its total sales in 2020.

"Louis Vuitton is arguably much cooler when it's vintage," continues Cheong. "As the Y2K trend continues to rise in popularity, it's a 'safe' way for all of us to partake without compromising our current aesthetic."

2. Chanel

According to Open for Vintage, "As prices continue to increase significantly year on year at Chanel, vintage is fast becoming the chosen way to access the iconic fashion house's designs at more reasonable prices. Additionally, more and more people are becoming savvy to the smart financial investment that a Chanel bag can be, with the resale market being a great way to make a profit if you ever choose to sell on."

"In line with Hermès, Chanel recently started reducing the availability of their iconic designs to create increased hype and demand," reveals Ghin. "While Classic Flaps and 2.55 Flaps were easily accessible a few months back, now, they're not only considerably more expensive, but they're harder to purchase from boutiques. Customers can now only buy just one Classic Black Flap per year, and this has hit like a tornado to the resell business. Your Chanel Flap is worth money now, darling!"

Cheong, too, weighs in on the Chanel price-hike, saying, "Amidst the online furore against yet another Chanel price increase, there is a way to beat it: Buy secondhand. Everyone loves to talk about how the quality was better 'back then,' and I might have to agree. Aside from real gold hardware pre-2008, I've seen leather shoes and bags from the early 2000s that have retained their integrity so well you would've thought it was a new-season style."

3. Dior

"Dior's 1969 oblique design came back in a big way in the brand's 2020 collections, and in turn, we saw sales for our vintage oblique designs spike significantly," says Open for Vintage.

"The oblique is undeniably cool," reaffirms Cheong. "Even if you're not so into obvious logos, the fact it has returned with full force and retains its covetability is a testament to the design. The colours are also neutrals that go with everything no matter the season. Think navy blue and burgundy as the most popular iterations. However, if it's your first bag purchase and this really isn't your style, I would suggest the Lady Dior instead. It's iconic."

"Dior is living a new golden era, playing with the two key elements of the Maison: Cannage (the motif coming from Napoleon III–style cane chairs composed of wood and cane webbing) and the iconic Dior Oblique pattern," says Ghin. "Lady Dior and Saddle are the among the most coveted and demanded bags in the secondhand market, owning to their practicality and classy design."

4. Gucci

"Gucci's increased injection of its 'retro' Horsebit detail in its collections meant that we saw our vintage collection become more in demand again, with the Gucci Jackie comeback particularly fuelling this," notes Open for Vintage. Indeed, the revival of the Jackie seems to have caught Cheong's attention, too. "Gucci is one of those brands that have seen an incredible transformation over the last decade," she says. "Jackie is my favourite silhouette. Its allure as a day-to-night bag is as strong as ever. Plus, I've heard that the vintage styles come roomier, which is a convincing option compared to the newer version, which I love but really doesn't fit a lot."

5. Prada

"Prada's Nylon bags are another hot topic on the internet. Is it worth it to pay £1400 for this?" muses Cheong. "If you're enamoured by its early 2000s vibe but shudder at the price tag, luckily for you, there are plenty available secondhand. Win win."

She's not wrong. According to Vestiaire Collective, the Prada Nylon bag has seen sales increased by 150% YoY, with the style being re-released by the brand in a variety of vibrant shades and finishes, many of which you can find on the resale site.

6. Hermès

"Quintessentially chic, iconic, and incredibly valuable, all Hermès handbags are made with the best craftsmanship and materials," attests Ghin. "Did you know that Birkins are better investments than stocks? While gold and stocks are volatile by definition and might give you a financial rollercoaster, Birkin bags have increased in value by a small and constant percentage over the past 35 years. Their demand is constantly growing, all the while their availability is becoming less and less. Birkin, Kelly and Constance are the magic trio from Hermès and are worth investing in if you can, as all three will allow you to earn a considerable profit if you ever decided to sell them."

"I'm a Kelly girl, but I'd never say no to a Birkin," says Cheong. "These are the holy grail of the bag world, despite what Beyoncé says. (Sorry!) However, the Herculean tasks we're expected to perform before being offered one of these don't quite appeal to me. And with the Hermès quality held in such high esteem, there is no reason not to try finding the exact size, colour and leather you want through a resale site."

Jewellery is a window into one's soul, or so the idea goes. Coco Chanel revolutionised the idea of costume jewellery—it was once seen as naff, and although the designer did have a fine jewellery collection (and the brand now creates the most incredible fine jewellery pieces), she radically introduced the idea of wearing semi-precious with precious—like those ropes of pearls, bedazzling, gem-studded brooches or chunky enamel bangles.

There are many pieces we'd like to own from Chanel's wide jewellery offering: 1980s gold logo earrings, strands of pearls, delicate diamonds and more, but there's still something unique about picking up one of the intricately designed brooches—no matter your age or personal style.

We'd be blowing kisses too if we were decked out in Bulgari ice like Bella. With a sky-high price tag thanks to the complex engineering and high-quality materials that go into making each Serpenti design, it's no wonder that this haute joiallerie range is one the most aspirational out there, and vintage pieces are known to be auctioned for phenomenal amounts: A rare Serpenti watch from 1965 went for over $1 million in 2014 (about £762,900).

When it comes to wardrobe staples, objectively only a few items really fit the bill. Yes, of course, a white shirt, a black blazer, and a pair of true blue straight-leg jeans all make the cut. But shoes? They can be much more subjective. While some might argue a classic black court shoe is a must-have, others might believe that it’s a pair of ankle boots. What I’m saying is that it’s harder to choose as shoes (and bags) are quite often the pieces you add to your white shirt or black dress to show off your style and personality.
