As celebrity hairstylist Sky Kim shares, "Summer always brings hair back to freedom. It’s less structured, more expressive." Beauty trends have a funny way of cycling in and out of the spotlight, so you might very well see them again once fall rolls back around. For summer 2026, though, these are the seven swaps on the rise.

Out: Blunt Bobs | In: Lived-In Layers

If you sported a chin-skimming crop last summer, you're not alone. It was arguably the year of the bob—from voluminous "Riviera" bobs to sleek Prada" bobs to '60s-inspired "flipped" bobs—and if you, too, committed to the shorter cut, you're probably currently residing in lob territory. As you encompass the grow-out period, try leaning into soft movement and texture (such as airy layers) as opposed to blunt bobs.

Celebrity hairstylist Reece Walker agrees: "Many clients who had strong blunt bobs are now growing them out and really embracing hair that feels less structured and more lived-in," he shares. Consider it the pendulum swing from bold, sophisticated cuts to styles with more of an "undone" feel.

Out: Solid Cool Tones | In: Warmth and Dimension

"Flat, one-note hair colour is fading, especially overly cool, ashy tones that don’t reflect light," says Kim. "Instead, people are leaning into dimension and natural undertones. Think warm blondes, reds that enhance what’s already in your hair, and brunettes with subtle tonal ribbons. It’s very reflective, very alive—colour that shifts in the light rather than sitting flat." Walker echoes her declaration, adding that dimension in colour is going to be huge. "Less flat, solid colour and more depth and movement," he notes.

Dakota Johnson is the perfect example, as she recently transformed her rich brunette length to a dimensional dirty blonde at this year's Time 100 gala. It's the first time in years she switched up her go-to shade, so that's when you know the colour trend has legs. Time this as your sign to book in for some balayage.

Out: Blended Curtain Bangs | In: "Bratty" Bangs

Long curtain bangs are A+ for those who aren't necessarily ready to commit to the bang life, but in summer 2026, there's little room for middle ground. "Soft, overly blended curtain bangs are out," Kim asserts. Instead? A bold, "bratty" side bang reigns supreme. "It’s shorter, slightly choppier and more intentional. It sits higher, hits around the cheekbone or brow, and feels a little undone in a way that gives attitude rather than softness," she adds. "It’s less about perfectly feathered face framing and more about creating shape and edge."

Out: Subtle Tones | In: Expressive Colour

While haircuts are becoming increasingly more lived-in, "Colour is where it gets exciting," notes Kim. "We’re seeing a move toward dimensional, expressive colour, similar to that Alyssa Liu energy where it feels bold and wild." You don't necessarily have to commit to a halo hair colour like Liu, but for those craving more of a summer statement, consider this your sign to embrace high-contrast (dare I say ombré?) hair. "I think the drastic dual tones are coming back, like Billie Eilish’s green hair roots, dark tips, etc.," adds Kim.

Out: Glassy Slick-Backs | In: Textured Updos

Allow me to clarify: a slick-back will never truly fall out of favour. But stylists can't ignore the onslaught of lived-in, piece-y updos that just feel unrestricted. Shares Kim, "2025 felt very controlled, sleek, polished, and almost uniform—a lot of glass hair, tight finishes, and minimal variation. 2026 is breaking that open. There’s more personality, more texture, and more confidence in letting hair feel lived-in." Again, slick-backs will never be fully "out," but they are becoming less helmet-like. "Even when the look is polished, it’s not rigid. It’s less about perfection and more about identity," Kim adds.

Out: Tucked Bobs | In: Tucked Bixies

Remember when the tucked bob (aka a bob secured behind one or both ears) became all the buzz? We're starting to see a similar style take shape this summer, but it's a tad shorter, kissing the nape of the neck instead of the tops of the shoulders. Celebs like Gracie Abrams, Carey Mulligan, and Olandria Carthen (pictured above) have all embraced the chic tucked pixie cut, choosing to tuck their pixie behind just one ear to show off their bone structure. That said, you could also clip the pieces away using a subtle bobby pin or bold hair accessory. Artist's choice!

Out: Bombshell Blowouts | In: "C" Curls

Like classic slick-backs, bouncy, bombshell blowouts will never completely go away. Feel free to enjoy your '90s style all summer long, but if you want to embrace the new It-girl blowout, try your hand at softer "C" curls. "It’s a classic French blowout but with a nice bend and 'C' shape at the ends," explains celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, who recently created the look for Gigi Hadid. "Instead of a flat-ironed straight hair look, this is a beautiful blowout with a gorgeous bend."

According to the pro, it also looks divine paired with a feathery, mid-length cut. "This look is very modern and fresh," he adds. "The 'C' curl is going to be the new hairstyle for the summer!"

“The longer your hair, the higher the maintenance” is something we’ve all probably heard when considering whether or not we should opt for a bob. But I have to admit that as someone with Afro hair, I’ve always been under the impression that getting a bob would be more stress it’s worth.

The truth? Even the shortest of haircuts still requires a lot of upkeep, something that I’m sure low-maintenance girls like myself are heartbroken to hear. However, there are plenty of bob hairstyles around that are perfectly suited to naturally curly and coily hair and don’t require the hours of upkeep you might initially expect.

A few days ago, I sat down with professional hair stylist and brand founder, Charlotte Mensah, to get her honest thoughts on what bob haircuts are the best for Afro hair, as well as how to maintain your own bob at home. Here’s what she had to say...

What Is an Afro Bob Haircut?

Mensah says, "An Afro bob is a bob shaped specifically with textured hair in mind. It honours the density, movement and beauty of curls, coils or stretched natural hair, rather than forcing the hair into a shape designed for straighter textures. It can be sculpted soft and rounded, sharp and graphic, chin-length, shoulder-grazing or layered for lift and movement. The beauty of an Afro bob is that it celebrates shape."

Do Bobs Suit Afro Hair?

"Absolutely! Bobs can be beautiful on Afro hair. In many ways, textured hair gives a bob more character, volume and presence. The key lies in tailoring the cut to your curl pattern, density, shrinkage and how you like to wear your hair day to day. A good bob should work with your texture, not against it", says Mensah.

Tips for Getting a Bob with Afro Hair

• Book a consultation first and foremost so that you can speak to your stylist before doing anything. Understand the look you want to achieve, and talk through how your stylist will approach it. A lot can be uncovered in that conversation.
• Bring reference images to help communicate shape, fullness, length and finish, while giving your stylist something tangible to respond to. Come open-minded too, as the right bob should suit both your texture and your features.
• Wear your hair as you usually wear it so your stylist understands its natural behaviour. Talk about shrinkage, as a curly bob and a stretched bob can sit very differently. Be honest about maintenance, too. If you want ease, say so. If you enjoy styling, that opens up other possibilities.
• Face shape, neckline and the experience of the stylist all matter. A well-cut bob should frame you beautifully, and textured hair deserves someone who understands how to cut for shape.

The Best Bobs for Afro Hair

1. Blunt Bob

If you often blow-dry your hair, try opting for a one-length, also known as a blunt bob. It requires much lower upkeep than a traditional cut and less frequent trims, not to mention it looks sleek and intentional.

2. Layered Bob

If your hair has natural, different-length coils to it, embrace it in the form of a layered bob. This voluminous hairstyle will give your bob effortless structure and requires minimal styling to look chic.

3. Tapered Bob

A tapered bob is longer on top and gradually gets shorter toward the nape of the neck, creating a clean, structured finish that looks put together. It perfectly balances feeling laid-back and looking elegant, and the bob will evolve nicely without any interference needed as it grows out.

I've enlisted the help of Luke Hersheson, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Hershesons (who also tends to the hair of Victoria Beckham, Sienna Miller and Iris Law, to name but a few of his celebrity clientele), to share his top tips for achieving a perfectly sleek bun at home. How to Do a Slicked-Back Bun

Before you begin, there are a few tools and products you will need to get a professional-looking finish. "For this look, I recommend a mixed bristle brush, a styling cream like Hershesons Almost Everything Cream (£25), a texture spray, Frenchies hair pins and a hairspray like Got2b Glued Hairspray (£6)," says Hersheson.

"Second-day hair is ideal, especially if it’s already straight. Natural texture helps the product grip and hold the shape better than freshly washed hair," he says, so forgo your shampoo, as a little bit of oil will help to hold the hair in place.

1. Prep Hair

Begin with dry hair. If your hair is slippery or freshly washed, you can mist through some texturising spray to help give the hair some grit and hold. I'm using Oribe's Dry Texturising Spray (£47) through my lengths for extra grip.

2. Choose Parting

Next, it's time to choose your parting. "The parting completely changes the character of the style," says Hersheson. "No parting feels more androgynous and editorial, a side parting gives a slightly boyish, directional feel and a centre parting reads softer," he says. "The position of the bun also plays a role; lower buns feel more classic and polished, while higher placements feel more lifted and sportier."

3. Section Hair

If your lengths are on the longer or thicker side, it can be helpful to section your hair into two parts to help get a smooth finish and minimise bumps. Here, I've separated my hair into a top section and a bottom section with my tail comb, the latter of which I'll slick back into a ponytail first before repeating with the top section.

4. Apply Pomade

"Apply Almost Everything Cream generously through the lengths and roots," says Hersheson. This will help to provide hold and allow you to achieve a sleek and shiny result.

5. Slick Back

"Brush hair back (or into your chosen parting) using a mixed bristle brush, keeping tension firm to eliminate bumps," says Hersheson. Look for a hair brush with boar bristles that are densely packed together, as this will help to tuck all the hairs into a smooth finish. "Continue brushing until the hair sits flat and close to the head," he says. "Curly or coily hair requires more intensive brushing and product to get the hair as flat and compact as possible," he says.

6. Tie Hair

"Gather into a ponytail at your desired height, ensuring it stays tight and controlled and secure with an elastic. Keep the hair balanced and neutral in placement so the nape doesn’t drop or sag throughout the day," says Hersheson.

7. Slick Back Front

Next, you can repeat the sam process with the front section to join the ponytail, using a pomade and your brush to smooth the sections into place.

8. Twist Into Bun

"Twist the ponytail and wrap it around the base to form a bun and pin or secure the bun in place," says Hersheson.

9. Smooth Flyaways

If you have any shorter layers that don't quite reach or stubborn flyaways, Hersheson has some tips to remedy them. "Shorter pieces need extra control," he says. "Use more product and apply heat where needed to set those sections in place so they don’t shift or pop out." I like using a hair wax stick to provide more targeted control and boost the glossy finish.

10. Apply Hairspray

As a final step, you can then finish with hairspray for extra hold and gloss.

The Result

And there you have your slicked-back bun. It should feel secure, but never too tight, and last all day. For extra hold, you can go in with another blast of hairspray to ensure your slick-back bun stays in place all day and night.

The “bratty little side bang” (BLSB for short) has attitude. She’s bold, defiant and bratty in the complimentary, Charli XCX–anointed sense. And by all accounts, she’s back—ready to take over spring and summer hair trend mood boards like the early 2000s diva she is. Cue the iconic hair flip.

“I am endlessly inspired by what I’ll call an ‘early 2000s hot suburban mom,’” says content creator Natalie Shine, who actually coined the BLSB during a trim back in January. Think Julie Cooper from The O.C., whom Shine credits as a key reference. Like the majority of beauty fans, she was craving a haircut refresh to kick off 2026, and it's no secret that nostalgic styles—including side fringes and side partings—have skyrocketed in popularity as of late. “The side bang was calling,” Shine says. And so the BLSB was born.

Shine isn’t the only one to hop on the side-bang bandwagon. Plenty of celebs (such as Bella Hadid, Zoë Kravitz, and Quenlin Blackwell, to name a few), designers (such as Sandy Liang and Tory Burch), and beauty insiders (like makeup artist Lila Childs) have cosigned swoopy side bangs over the past few months, and top hairstylists only expect the trend to soar as we edge closer to warmer weather.

“We’re in a moment [where] huge waves of early 2000s nostalgia are coming back in full swing,” explains celebrity hairstylist Sky Kim. “We’re seeing it across fashion, beauty and culture—but the difference now is that it’s more self-aware.” Campy, if you will. One who dons a BLSB is plugged into the Y2K reference and likely has the low-rise jeans and frosty eye makeup to match it.

But what separates the BLSB from its early 2000s predecessor? “It’s shorter, slightly piece-y, and sits higher on the cheekbone or just at the brow, almost like it’s been flicked into place,” says Kim. “It doesn’t try to blend perfectly into the rest of the haircut, which is what gives it that attitude.” According to celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan, it's also full of fluffy volume. “It’s not as literal as it was before,” he shares. See, while Y2K side bangs were typically flat-ironed into submission and, as a result, flopped lifelessly over the eye, “this year, the ‘bitchy little side bang’ is sexy and messy,” McMillan says. “It’s all about a flirty, voluminous hairstyle.”

Kim agrees—gone are the days of heavy, uniform, smoothly tucked side fringe. "The 2026 version keeps the reference but strips away the stiffness—it’s lighter, airier. Also, older bangs just came with really chunky highlights and layers," she says.

To ensure your BLSB appears fresh and updated while retaining just the right amount of nostalgia, she recommends lightly prepping the bangs with a blow-dry primer or touchable hair mousse (“Something that gives control without stiffness,” she says) before blow-drying from side to side with a small round brush. Shine personally separates her bangs into three layers before blow-drying (a key tip she learned from her stylist, Aurora, at Yves Durif Salon) to encourage bounce. Finish with hair spray for that side-part hold and a bit of hair oil to enhance the shine.

A final tip? “Keep the bang at the right length and don’t over-blend,” Kim suggests. “Isolate the bang to let it have a moment.” While traditional side bangs tend to be softer, more romantic, and long enough to melt into layers, the BLSB has enough personality to stand out on its own. It’d be a sin not to embrace the attitude.

In fact, its secret lies in the fact that this bob actually isn’t a one-length cut despite looking very much like one. “It actually has cleverly concealed layering which slims the silhouette and gives a relaxed and undone texture,” explains Tom Smith, hair stylist, trend forecaster, and founder of Aevum Salon. Despite its laidback look then, the lazy bob can actually be personalised precisely to your hair texture and thickness, unlike a more classic cut.

“It’s ideal for medium hair density that has a wave or loose curl naturally, but on thicker hair, concealed layers can provide a real opportunity to contour and shape the silhouette, whilst on fine hair, the bluntness of the ends can help add the appearance of thickness,” explains Smith.

As we come to the end of fashion month, I thought it was only right to cast my eyes over the Paris Fashion Week hair trends from this season. The Autumn/Winter 2026 shows have been a total feast for the eyes for hair trends, makeup trends and nail trends. However, as much as I love gawping at the runway shows and spying on the beauty trends backstage, there is nothing I love more than spotting what beauty looks the fashion week attendees are wearing themselves.

You see, I always appreciate the incredible avant-garde beauty moments you see on the runways, but they aren't always the most wearable of looks to pull off day-to-day. If your feeds are anything like mine right now, French pins are everywhere. There's no denying that French hair accessories are having a huge moment right now and have asserted themselves as a key player in 2026 hair trends. And ever since spotting the masterfully placed French pins and French combs at The Row's Spring/Summer 2026 show (it's probably my favourite beauty trend of the season), I've not been able to stop thinking about them. Claw clips may have reigned during the first half of the decade, but I'm willing to bet that 2026 belongs to the French pin.

Whilst I might not have the magically coiffing hands of legendary hairstylist Guido Palau, who was behind the intricate hairstyles backstage, it has encouraged me to get out of my hair rut of wearing my hair down every day, and so I've been researching exactly how to use a French pin.

If you've never used a French pin before, it can be both a bit intimidating and finicky (my first few French twists? They fell out in seconds). I've scrolled through countless video tutorials, which all make it look so easy to do. But, as I've since learned, there are so many hidden tricks to ensure you're using your French pin correctly. So, I enlisted the help of hair stylist Limoz Logli to share his expert tips on how to use a French pin and actually get your French twist to hold in place all day.

How to Use A French Pin

First things first, you'll need to choose the right French pin for your hair. Smaller French pins work on bob-length shoulder-length hair; however, those with longer or thicker lengths will get a more secure hold from a larger French pin. I personally love Logli's Yael French Pin (£19), which is larger than most and gives me the most secure fit on my long and thick hair. It's also a little flexible, helping to easily secure it into twists. For shorter hair lengths and finer hair types, & Other Stories Sculptural Hair Pins (£19) are a good size and have a chic chrome finish that peeks out of your French twist, effortlessly updating your everyday updo.

Prepping your hair will also ensure your French twist holds in place, especially if you have silky lengths that are more slippery to work with. "Hair should be clean but not greasy or slippery. Day-old hair is ideal, or freshly washed hair with a bit of added texture. You want grip; overly clean, soft hair won’t hold as well," says Logli. "A light texture spray or dry shampoo through the roots helps enormously. Start by adding light texture through the roots and mid-lengths; this gives the hair grip and movement," he says. "Avoid pomades, as they’re too slippery and can make the twist collapse," he adds. "Curly or textured hair often holds naturally and usually needs less product, just careful shaping and anchoring."

As for using the French pin itself, there are endless ways to use it. Ahead, I'm sharing two ways to create a French twist using a French pin.

Method 1

This technique involves wrapping your hair around your fingers to create a twist before inserting the French pin to secure it. I find this method gives more of an effortless and undone vibe, especially if you let the ends peek out of your twist. For something more polished and refined, scroll on to method two further below, where you use the pin in place of your fingers (I also find this to provide a more secure fit, IMO).

Step 1

After prepping your hair with any styling products, gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck and hold onto it with your non-dominant hand. "Just above the nape is the most flattering and secure place," says Logli. "Keeping it slightly off-centre makes it feel more modern and relaxed."

Step 2

Wrap your ponytail underneath your index and middle fingers of your dominant hand. This allows you to easily twist the hair upwards. My biggest tip? Remove your rings for this part, as they can sometimes catch on the twist.

Step 3

"Gather the hair at the nape and twist it upward, following the shape of the head," says Logli. Twist your hair in a circular motion until your hair is fully twirled into the twist, and use your other hand to help guide the hair up and hold it at the top of the twist. If you have long hair or layers, don't worry if they won't all fit in the twist at this stage.

Step 4

For any ends that are peeking out of the twist, you can simply tuck them inside the twist using your other hand as you hold the twist in place.

Step 5

I'd argue that the technique you use to secure the French pin into your hair is the most crucial step. Above, I'm showing how to move the French pin into the hair for the most secure fit. "Insert the pin with the curve facing outward, not toward the head," says Logli. "Then, slide it into the twist, then rotate it inward so the curve cups the shape of the head," he says.

Step 6

"Hold the twist in place, then insert the French pin from the side with more volume. Catch a section of the twist, rotate the pin inward, and slide it down so it anchors into the hair at the base of the head," he adds.

It can take a few tries to get the right tension, so if it feels too loose or too tight, you can start again. "If it feels loose, it isn’t anchored into the hair near the scalp," says Logli. "If it feels uncomfortable, the pin is pressing against the head instead of sitting within the twist."

Step 7

If you have any ends popping out that bother you, you can slide in some hair grips for a neater look. "With shorter layers, secure the twist first, then pin loose pieces afterwards," says Logli. "For very long hair, fold excess length back into the twist rather than building it upward so the shape stays elegant." However, if you're going for a more effortless look, you can keep them peeking out for a casual French twist.

Step 8

And there you have your French twist. "The twist should feel firm and controlled, but never strained," says Logli. "If it’s too loose, the pin won’t have enough structure to anchor into; if it’s too tight, the hair loses flexibility, and the pin can slip," he says. "Aim for a smooth, secure twist that stays close to the head; the pin should lock it in place, not fight against it," he says.

As a finishing step, you can use a light touch of hairspray to set it into place. and pull a few face-framing tendrils free if you prefer. "Finish with a light mist of hairspray for hold and polish; the result should look glossy and intentional, never stiff," says Logli.

Method 2

If the first method doesn't feel secure enough, try this one instead. Instead of wrapping your hair around your fingers to create the twist, you'll instead wrap it around the French pin itself. I find this method results in a much more secure French twist, as well as looking a little more polished and sleeker overall.

Step 1

Begin by gathering your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck using your non-dominant hand.

Step 2

Wrap the base of the ponytail around the top of the French pin in your other hand, twisting upwards to form a coiled twist at the back of your head. Again, don't worry too much if any ends are peeking out at this stage—they can be tucked away at the end if you wish.

Step 3

Just like the technique used in the first method, we're using a similar process to insert the pin as shown above. You want to angle the pin so that it catches the back of the head, before angling it downwards to secure it to the back of the head as you slide it down towards the nape of the neck.

Step 4

As you come to the end of your twist, angle the end of the pin towards the scalp, angling the pin downwards so the curve of the pin hugs the back of your head as it slides into the twist. You might have to gently wiggle the French pin into place at the top of your twist to find the right angle to comfortably insert the pin. It should feel secure. If it feels too tight or too loose, start again until you find a more comfortable fit.

Step 5

You can then tuck in any ends that didn't fit into the twist at the side of the twist using your fingers, or add a couple of hair grips to secure them more firmly if needed.

Step 6

And there you have your finished French twist. You can then pull a few strands free for some face-framing tendrils if you like, and fix with some hairspray for extra hold.

You might not think twice about the claw clip you use to haphazardly toss up your lengths or the headband that keeps your bangs away from your eyelashes, but make no mistake: A chic hair accessory is the key to elevating any outfit—it's similar to jewellery in that way. And this year, fashion-forward beauty fans are having a lot more fun with the ornaments, including tasselled details, heirloom-like brooches, and "wonky" clips that make a surrealist statement. Oversize Barrettes

When it comes to jumbo accessories, swap the oversized scrunchies for ginormous barrettes, which you can use to pull back front pieces, add a touch of glamour to half-up styles, or even secure a ponytail. "Hair accessories are blending seamlessly with jewellery-inspired trends," notes L.A.-based hairstylist Hayley Heckmann, and just like in the jewellery space, sculptural and art deco–inspired pieces are starting to reign supreme. That said, you'll be seeing barrettes with sharp geometric shapes over dainty, crystal-adorned clips in the months ahead.

Decorative Hairpins

Pinterest predicted people would enhance their outfits with vintage pins, crystal clip-ons, and heirloom brooches in its 2026 trend report, and we can expect similar heirloom-like touches in the hairstyling space. Just take it from Zoë Kravitz, who topped her braided updo with a delicate silver brooch at the 2026 Golden Globes. Pins come in all shapes and sizes, but Stephanie Angelone predicts an uptick in ones particularly bedecked with gemstones, offering a precious, got-it-from-Grandma element that adds instant elegance. "Everything will be embellished, giving vintage, feminine vibes," she notes.

French Combs

French combs also feel like little heirlooms, especially the ones tucked into models' sculptural chignons at The Row's S/S 26 show during Paris Fashion Week. These chic accessories have seen quite the resurgence since then, with tutorials popping up all over TikTok, and despite looking rather intricate, fastened to an elegant French twist, all it requires is a little scoop-and-slide manoeuvring to look sophisticated. (I'm speaking from experience!) Grab one with gemstones for more of a vintage feel, or you can find simple tortoiseshell combs. Rest assured, both routes appear equally elevated.

Tassels

"Tassels will be a big hair accessory trend too, and I can’t wait to see all the ways they can be incorporated into looks," Angelone shares. It's no secret that fashion insiders fawned over tassels in 2025, and this year, we'll see those details incorporated into plenty of jewellery and hair moments. Instantly adding texture and movement to any outfit, tassels are a wonderful option for those hoping to dress up minimalist basics. If you're reluctant to commit to a bold pair of earrings, however, a tasselled barrette or pin offers the same eye-catching effect.

Statement Clips

Allow Angelone to declare: "The classic claw clip is levelling off." You heard it here first! Now, that doesn't mean we won't see these accessories crop up at all—they're classics, of course. Claw clips are just becoming more, well, compelling. Think truly unique shapes with "out-there" concepts, such as a tin of sardines or a mini model of an iconic designer bag. "Hair accessories have shifted from being purely functional to being a way to express individuality and personality," confirms Heckmann. A campy claw clip certainly allows you to express your playful, wonky side, wouldn't you say?

Crochet Pieces

Crochet dominated spring/summer 2025 fashion, but insiders expect this texture to stick around, especially in the form of versatile, intricate hair pieces. "Crochet meshed hats that are fitted (not slouchy) will stay relevant and more refined this year," Angelone shares, noting that they'll transcend the summer season. If you're looking for a subtler way to wear crochet, bun covers are a gorgeous route to take; it's giving vintage balletcore, be it a cream, black, or beaded item.

The New Coquette

"The coquette trend isn’t disappearing. It’s just shifting," notes Heckmann. While bows and ribbons remain en vogue (the 2026 Golden Globes red carpet is proof of that), "pretty" versions of balaclavas, triangle scarves and preppy headbands feel slightly more of the moment, especially during winter. "[They] keep the same coquette vibe while updating it for a more 2026 look," Heckmann adds.

Anything Tortoiseshell

Consider it the CBK effect. "Carolyn Bessette Kennedy has always been a style icon, and with American Love Story about to be released, we’re already thinking of more ways to channel her classic, chic style," Angelone explains. In addition to her minimalist-chic fashion moments (plus that bold tomato-red coat, of course), beauty fans are itching to re-create her signature hair looks—many of which were adorned with a sleek, tortoiseshell headband. As a result, Angelone predicts "anything tortoise" to have major staying power, from headbands to barrettes to French pins. "Tortoise is truly timeless, and the classic tortoise or blonde tortoise can complement your hair colour," she adds.

In 2026, we're seeing a clear transition from the "clean-girl" era to the "messy-girl" era, especially when it comes to hair trends. Whilst super neat, slicked-back styles and perfectly sleek butterfly layers will always be in style, if the spring-summer 2026 runways were anything to go by, this year is all about embracing tousled waves and shag haircuts. However, as hair trends continue to evolve, we're seeing more elevated versions of these cool-girl styles, which is why I want to talk a little bit about the muted shag.

What Is the Muted Shag Haircut?

As the name might suggest, the muted shag is a softer iteration of the popular shag hairstyle, leaning into those "messy girl" vibes whilst remaining incredibly wearable. I've spotted this style on the likes of Suki Waterhouse and Miley Cyrus as of late, proving that it's set to be one of the biggest haircut trends of the season.

It still features all the elements of a shag haircut we know and love (hello, choppy layers and tousled texture), but the outline is much less harsh. Because of this, the muted shag appears effortlessly chic, and I can totally see why all the stars are opting for this laid-back finish. I know I've said countless times by now that I'm not one for crazy New Year's resolutions, but if I'm being totally honest, there is one thing I really want to do this year, and that's move my body more. Ideally, I'd opt for a clarifying shampoo, such as Ouai Detox Shampoo (£28), which removes buildup from the roots and ensures that no lingering product or oil on the scalp can weigh down your hair. Use a lightweight conditioner just on the ends and thoroughly rinse to keep your hair feeling as light as possible.

After towel-drying, I prefer to use one or two styling or volumising hair products at most before blow-drying. I like Hair by Sam McKnight's Cool Girl Volume Blow Dry Foam (£28), which has a non-tacky, aerated texture to add volume, hold and oomph without the heavy stickiness of traditional hair mousse. If you have fine hair, then L'Oreal Professionnel Pli (£17) is a great lightweight styling spray to help lock in your style. I see this product in every hairstylist's kit bag, and it is a favourite of the pros for a reason.

And because we're using heat on our hair, I recommend misting through a hair heat protector such as K18's Biomimetic Hairscience Heatbounce Conditioning Heat Protectant (£48) to shield your lengths as you style. Hersheson's top pick is the Zhoosh Foam (£16). "It gives instant lift and movement without crunch, which makes the whole process easier," he says.

2. Rough-Dry

When you're doing a bouncy blow-dry, you want to work with hair that's 80-90% dry. "It will make your life a lot harder if you're starting with wet hair," says Hersheson. "Rough-dry first so you’re working on damp, not wet hair, and use the right product," he says. Concentrating on the roots, I like to flip my hair to the opposite side of where it naturally falls and the hair dryer nozzle to create lift and volume. You can also tip your head upside down and point your hair dryer upwards to the roots to encourage more lift.

3. Section Hair

I'd highly recommend sectioning your hair before blow-drying, as it will make your life so much easier. If you have long or thick hair, I'd especially recommend that you don't skip this step! I like to section off my hair into two parts by clipping the top half of my hair on top of my head before working on the bottom half of my hair first. You could also split your hair into quarters if you're blessed with a lot of hair. This will help you effectively blow-dry each section without battling with other parts of your hair getting in the way.

4. Blow-Dry

Now you're ready to blow-dry, you have two choices. You can use a hot brush or hair multi-styler with a round brush attachment to style, or, if you're particularly dexterous, you can use a traditional round brush with your hair dryer. I usually opt for the former; otherwise, it can become quite the arm workout!

"For the technique, think 90s supermodel: width, movement and confidence, not perfection. Work in medium sections, wrap, heat and set," says Hersheson. Start with taking a small section (around an inch or so is ideal—it should be able to comfortably fit around the round brush) and wrap the length around the brush. I like to roll the brush under and above the hair a couple of times to dry and polish the hair to add shine.

The direction you roll the hair into will also dictate the effect. Rolling it with your hair on top of the brush will result in more volume at the root. Rolling it with the hair sitting on the underside of your hair will give a face-framing effect. Another top tip is to hold the brush horizontally, rather than vertically, for extra volume at the root and more body through the lengths.

Ensure you're creating a comfortable amount of tension to help shape the hair as you dry each section. Take your time on each section, ensuring it's thoroughly dry before winding it all the way up. Then, you can roll the section all the way up the brush and hold it in place for a few seconds to lock in the style.

5. Use Cold Shot

Whether you use your cold shot setting on your hot brush or hair dryer will make or break whether your bouncy blow-dry holds or falls flat. Heating your hair allows you to manipulate the shape, but cooling it back down again is paramount to locking it in. "The setting stage is what makes the blow-dry last," says Hersheson. "And if you’re short on time, focus on the front. Shaping the face frame instantly makes the whole look feel more polished," he says.

I like to use the cold shot button on my hot brush for 10 seconds, or until the hair feels cooler to the touch, before unravelling the section from the brush. Don't skip this step, as it will ensure your style stays bouncy.

6. Set in Rollers

Using some Velcro rollers will help to further set your hair in place. That’s what locks everything in and gives you glossy, touchable bounce that lasts. I like to do this as soon as I've released my hair from the brush after using the cold shot setting. Wrap the end of the section around the roller and gently roll it up the length of your hair. You'll want to follow the same direction you used to blow-dry the section, and then use a hair clip to secure the roller in place. Repeat steps four to six on each section and pop it in a roller as soon as you've blow-dried it.

Like the round brush or hot brush you're using, the size of the rollers will also dictate the outcome. For a bouncy blow-dry, you want to use medium to large-sized rollers for maximum body and bounce. Smaller rollers, on the other hand, will create a tighter curl. 7. Leave to Cool

Now your hair is set in rollers, you want to leave them in for as long as you possibly can, but at a minimum for 15-30 minutes. The longer they're in your hair, the longer your style will last, so don't be tempted to take them out too early. To help speed up the process, you can use the cold shot button on your hair dryer at a low speed to gently cool your hair while it sets in the rollers.

8. Remove Rollers

Now it's time for the big reveal. Start on the underside of your head and gently unclip each roller, gently rolling it down to remove it, and you should have some bouncy curls. Personally, I'd avoid using a hairbrush at this stage and instead use your fingers to gently coax your hair into place without disturbing the shape of the hair too much. "When brushing out, don’t panic at large curls," says Hersheson. "It’s easier to take out volume than add it. Use a wide-toothed comb instead of a flat brush, and stop combing when you hit the movement you want," he says.

For extra volume and root lift, you can flip your hair into a side parting. If you already wear your hair in a side parting, try flipping it over to the opposite side for more root lift. I like to push the front section back and allow it to naturally fall into place. But the beauty of a bouncy blow-dry is that whichever way you wear it, you should have lots of bouncy volume.

9. Finishing Products

Now that you have removed all of your rollers, you can mist through some hairspray to lock in the style. You could even use some texturising spray or a volumising spray at the roots for extra root lift, but avoid overloading the hair with too much product. Applying too much can weigh down the lengths and cause your bouncy blow-dry to drop. So avoid undoing your hard work and start with a light misting and build up.

10. The Result

And there you have your bouncy blow-dry! To make it last, I'd avoid touching your hair too much (which can make the bounce drop) and, if you want to retain the volume the next day, you can wear your hair in a low, loose bun tied with a satiny scrunchie, or by sleeping on a silk pillowcase. Both help to reduce friction on your hair, so you can enjoy your bouncy blow-dry well into your second-day hair.

"I think I just want what Margot has—like this," I say into the salon mirror as I hold my phone up behind my head to showcase my blonde-hair inspiration picture. It's an uncharacteristically hot and sunny Friday morning in the midst of New York Fashion Week, and I'm sat in Jenna Perry Hair Studio (New York's coolest, most in-demand salon), showing hair colourist, Jacob Schwartz, a picture of his own celebrity client as a reference point.

In my line of work, as a beauty director, it's considered somewhat of a faux pas to talk to an expert about a celebrity client, let alone ask them to recreate their signature look. But I've spent years trying to achieve Margot Robbie's laid-back, California-cool, lived-in, worn blonde, and this is my one opportunity to have her actual hair colourist do my own colour. So, yeah, I'll suck up my pride for that.

You might be wondering how I ended up in this situation, and trust me, it's something I've asked myself a fair few times, too. But it all started with an email. I was flying out to New York for a tour of the Olaplex labs. (FYI, I was the first journalist to ever set foot in the brand's top-secret labs, but I'll save that story for another day—I'm just bragging now.) And, a few days before I was due to fly, I received an email from the brand. They asked if I fancied a hair appointment while I was out there. I needed a colour refresh, I thought—sure, I'll have a quick hair gloss treatment or something similarly low-key.

And then the confirmation came through that my colour appointment would actually be with Olaplex ambassador, Jacob Schwartz. And if you're not clued up on who exactly Jacob Schwartz is and the sort of work he does, let me enlighten you.

Schwartz is, usually, based in L.A., and he is the man behind pretty much every major celebrity hair colour trend that I have in my Saved folder: Daisy Edgar Jones's rich chocolate hues, Bella Hadid's honeyed blonde transformation, Lily Collins's dark suede bob and, of course, Margot Robbie's cool-girl blonde. And given my track record of trying to mimic Margot's blonde on my own lengths, it's safe to say I was already somewhat of a Schwartz fan.

So, when I learned he would be in New York to hang out with me for dinner and then do my colour the next morning, I left my inhibitions on the tarmac at Heathrow Terminal 5 and boarded a flight to JFK, with my phone storage full of Margot Robbie inspiration pics. Playing it cool was simply not on my agenda.

And so, given that I appreciate just how spoilt I am, I thought I'd share my experience with you all, so that you too know exactly what to ask for at the salon to achieve Margot Robbie's iconic blonde hair. You can thank me later.

How to Achieve Margot Robbie's Blonde

As Schwartz got to work on sectioning out super-fine highlights around my head, I asked him to explain the process. "I start off by highlighting your lengths with really fine highlights, which is what I would do with Margot. Once that's done, I start rinsing it in sections. So, if I've started applying the colour at the back, I'll rinse the back first and then I'll work my way around the head. At the end, I'll do a gloss treatment, which will blend any greys and soften the root while harmonising everything and tying together the whole look," he explains.

He also mentions that he would be leaning on the Olaplex in-salon system for this sort of transformation. The bond-strengthening and restoring technology means that, when mixed into the bleach and colour, the hair bonds aren't broken in the same way they would be otherwise. Otherwise, he adds, an extreme bleach transformation like this simply wouldn't be doable without all kinds of hair breakage. (Long live Olaplex is what I say.)

Besides rinsing out the colour in stages, there are a few other things I notice Schwartz do differently. For starters, he brightens up all of the hair that frames my face, and while other colourists might shy away from doing this because the finer hair is more prone to breakage, he has a very effective technique—immediately after the highlights have been applied, he grabs a wet towel and removes the foils in those more delicate areas. "I wipe off the bleach with a damp, cool towel, so that the rest of the bleach can develop without overprocessing these finer areas," he says.

The other unique step? Once the highlights are rinsed, it's back in the chair for a rough dry. He then brushes everything out and hand paints in some balayage. This, he explains, is because highlights alone won't achieve this sort of look—he needs to see if there are any areas that might need brightening up with wider ribbons of blonde. This, along with the gloss treatment at the final stage, is what really creates that lived-in, natural-looking result.

The Result

The result was, in short, the blonde of my dreams. It's multi-dimensional, bright around the face and the gloss at the end still creates a softness to the root that means regrowth isn't much of an issue at all. In fact, I'm almost certain this blonde is going to grow out in the most low-fuss way possible. I truly couldn't be more thrilled.

Although, it's not for everyone: "It sits right in the eyes, and as saucy as it looks, it can get annoying for some," Schlabach caveats. "The beauty and the pain of this bang choice is that it grows out all too soon and can quickly be swept to either side or down the middle and turn into face-framing rather than a bang."

For the bold beauty lovers among us, baby bangs are a very on-trend choice. They're easier to style if you have a looser curl type, says Schlabach, and they're typically cut well above the eyebrow. "About an inch down from the hairline above the nose," he adds. "This can pair up great with an exaggerated mullet or shag, as it offers some serious balance to the asymmetry."

Yara Shahidi always makes an appearance on hairstyle mood boards, and for good reason: Her hair shaping is simply divine. Case in point? Her full curtain bangs pictured here with wispy tendrils that perfectly frame her face.

14. The Crown

“The 'crown' bang has a lot of volume and connects to the rest of the amplified shape that only the curly can have," Schlabach shares. It's lush and voluminous and pairs great with a shorter cut—think collarbones and up, Schlabach notes. "You need to be relatively curly for these bangs and have enough density to support the shape, though," he adds. "You can wear these bangs defined or shaken out, the latter being my personal favorite."

15. '90s Curly Bangs

"I'm seeing a lot of '90s revival meets French girl texture: soft, fluffy, barely-there bangs paired with volume and layers," Alfaro notes. "Think undone, romantic curls that frame the face instead of strict, polished shapes. The look feels effortless and confident." Technically, this shot of Sarah Jessica Parker was taken in 1989 (semantics!), but the undone effect still holds.

16. Wispy Curly Bangs

The great thing about curly bangs is that they don't have to be too precise—the more imperfect the better, actually. Dueñas recommends leaning into your natural texture by opting for wispy, intentionally mismatched pieces. "Some strands [will] be longer, some shorter. These bangs help add movement and don't overwhelm your face," he shares.

What Fringes Look Good With Curly Hair?

"Curly bangs look best when they flow naturally with your curl pattern instead of fighting against it," says Alfaro. "Shapes like soft, rounded bangs or curtain-style curly fringe frame the face beautifully and blend into the rest of the curls for a seamless look. These styles work because they keep the curls' natural volume and bounce so the bangs feel lived-in, not forced."

All three experts I spoke to were quick to highlight the curly shag—one of the most on-trend hairstyles for 2025. "It gives movement, personality, and a 'perfectly imperfect' vibe," Alfaro adds. Dueñas agrees, gushing over Zendaya's curly fringe. "But honestly, I'm a sucker for short, curved fringe that's carved into tight curl patterns," he adds.

Are There Any Bangs Those With Curly Hair Should Avoid?

According to the pros, those with curly hair might want to avoid blunt, straight-across bangs, namely because it's tricky to get a razor-cut edge on curly textures. "They tend to shrink unevenly and lose shape as curls dry. Instead, opt for textured or point-cut bangs that follow your curls' natural pattern," Alfaro suggests. Shrinkage is also an important factor to keep in mind when opting for shorter types, like baby or micro bangs.

On a similar note, both Alfaro and Dueñas advise against cutting curly bangs on wet hair. "A wet and dry cut is key," Alfaro adds. "Wet to get a foundation haircut and make sure you're cutting three inches longer than what you originally want. Then cut again when they're dry and styled. That's when you can see exactly how each curl falls."

Are Curly Bangs in Style in 2025?

Absolutely—and they'll never leave the chat! Leaning into your natural curl pattern will ensure you wind up with a timeless and flattering haircut every time. "I would say top of the list for curly bang styles are shag bangs (the ones that look like they are preexisting layers of your haircut)," Dueñas notes.

How to Style Curly Bangs

Consider leave-in conditioner, hair oil and mousse your new best friends. On wet hair, apply a lightweight leave-in or oil to provide moisture and slip. "Make sure your fringe is absolutely drenched with water before applying any product," Dueñas advises. Next, grab a mousse and "lightly scrunch upward to encourage curl formation," Alfaro explains.

Leave them to air-dry, and try not to mess with them too much—the more you touch curly bangs, the more they'll frizz. If you'd like to quickly style, "use a diffuser on low heat and low airflow, cupping the bangs to shape them as they dry," shares Alfaro. "The goal is soft, lived-in texture not perfection. Curly bangs should look like they belong with the rest of your curls, not like they were forced into place."

If you have micro or baby bangs, "you might want a little more control to keep them from standing up," Schlabach shares. "A lightweight gel should do the job, and definition is a good option to really showcase the blunt line they create to outline the top of the face."

Note, fringes often get oily at a faster rate than the rest of your hair (given that they're in constant contact with your face), so a daily refresh is always a good idea. Alfaro recommends reviving the fringe with a small bit of water and leave-in and/or gel. Don't forget to scrunch!

As a beauty editor who studies hair trends for a living, I'm surprisingly unadventurous when it comes to styling my hair. If I am doing it, though, nine times out of 10, I'll be using a curling wand to create loose waves. I like hair that looks effortless and never too "done", and crucially, any hairstyle I'm doing has to be quick and easy. Loose waves tick all the boxes for me.

Coincidentally, it's often the low-maintenance hairstyle that gets me the most compliments, and I always have people asking me how to do loose waves on their own hair. Having sat in the chair of some of the best salons and spoken to celebrity hairstylists throughout my decade in the industry, I've picked up plenty of tips on exactly how to do loose waves. Ahead, I'm sharing my step-by-step guide to getting effortless waves. From the best curling wands to the styling products that make all the difference, here's everything I've learned about creating loose waves. And trust me: it honestly couldn't be easier.

How to Do Loose Waves

1. Smooth and Prep

First things first, you want to start with clean, dry hair. If you have naturally curly hair, you'll want to first straighten your lengths with a hair straightener as a starting point. Gently brush to detangle, and prep with a heat protectant.

It can be tricky to find heat protectants that work on dry hair (most are better suited to damp hair pre-blow-dry), but my favourite is Oribe Gold Lust Dry Heat Protection (£42). It's an aerosol spray, so it doesn't make your hair wet, and it applies evenly in a light, non-sticky veil. Another hairstylist favourite is L'Oréal Professionnel Flex Pli (£17)—which you'll find in all the best salons, FYI—as it helps to hold your style in place whilst protecting from heat. I recommend this one if your hair doesn't hold a curl well.

2. Choose Your Wand

When you're creating loose waves, the size of your curling wand is so important. Generally speaking, the larger the wand or tong, the larger and looser the curl. The smaller the barrel, the tighter and smaller the curl.

My favourite curling wand for loose waves is the GHD Chronos Curve Max Wand (£189). It has a large 38mm barrel, which gives each section of hair a perfectly loose and effortless curl. This is a great size if you have long hair, as you can wrap the entire length around the barrel easily. However, you can still achieve loose waves if you own a smaller curling wand and don't want to buy another larger styling tool.

In fact, if you have hair that doesn't hold a curl well, then I'd actually recommend using a smaller curling wand instead. As you release each curl from the barrel, you can gently tug on the end to stretch the hair as it cools to soften the curl, all whilst getting the benefit of the hold from a tighter curl.

3. Choose Curl Direction

You can achieve different looks depending on the direction in which you curl the hair. When I style my loose waves, I like to curl away from my face on either side and continue in the same direction towards the back. This results in a more uniform, loose wave ripple throughout the lengths and looks more polished.

If you prefer more of a beachy texture, you can alternate the curl direction as you go. Start by curling away from the face around the front sections, alternating the curl direction around the head. I also find that this results in more volume and texture, as the curls offset each other and create the illusion of thicker, volumised hair, so it's ideal for thin hair types. Experiment and see which effect works best for you.

4. Wiggle the Wand

I picked up this tip from celebrity hairstylist Halley Brisker (watch the video of him using this technique on my hair here), who told me that wiggling the wand helps create an effortless-looking loose wave. As you hold your hair around the barrel, you can gently wiggle the wand up and down the section length. This results in a looser, softer curl, which makes the wave look more natural than an overly styled ringlet lot of curling wands and tongs deliver. If you curl a section and it's looking too springy, you can gently pull on the end whilst the hair is warm to elongate the curl as it cools.

5. Brush It Out

Once your hair has cooled and set into place, use your fingers to gently break up the curls. It's important to do this when the hair has cooled, because if you disturb the curls whilst still warm, it can affect the hold. Using your fingers to gently shake out the curls helps create that undone look; however, if you want something more polished, you can also use a wide-tooth comb or hairbrush to brush out the curls, particularly if they look too ringlet-y. I find this method makes the overall effect softer and glossier, whilst using your fingers helps retain texture.

6. Finishing Products

There are a few different ways you can finish and set your style. I like to run through a few drops of a hair oil or hair serum to add smoothness, tame flyaways and boost shine. But if you want more piecey waves, then a texturising spray can add texture and volume for that undone, just-rolled-out-of-bed dishevelledness (in the best way).

If you have fine hair or hair that doesn't hold a curl, then I'd recommend not overloading your lengths with too much product. A light misting of hairspray will help to keep your style in place without making your hair feel crispy.

To tame any rogue flyaways around the crown, I like to gently roll the curling wand (as it's cooling down) over the top of my head, carefully smoothing and sealing any frizz. You can then set them in place with a little hairspray (I like to apply a little to my hands first, then smooth the hair with my palms for a sleek result).

7. The Result

And there you have your loose waves. To help your style last for as long as possible, I recommend sleeping with your hair in a loose bun with a silky scrunchie or a silk pillowcase to keep the curl memory and prevent friction on your hair. This helps retain the style the following day and means you only need to go over a few sections with your wand to refresh the style on second-day hair.

As a team, we have committed what feels like every waking hour to identifying the upcoming season's biggest beauty trends—and let's face it, our hair is the thing we all really get into at this time of the year. What Is Boho Blonde?

Although most often associated with the summer months, 2025's worn blonde (that's the sort that looks somewhat dirty and grown-out in the best sort of way) has had an update going into autumn. Boho blonde is now making major waves amongst some of the coolest women I know of.

The defining traits of boho blonde are as such: ribbons of both cool- and warm-toned blonde running throughout the lengths, a dark root smudge, notably caramel hues that contrast with icier tones and, most importantly, the colour must possess a slightly dishevelled grace to it. What do I mean by this?

Well, it's all in the combination of the mousy root and delicately painted swaths of contrasting high and low-lights. Rather than looking perfectly preened (like the socialite, nineties blonde trend we have started to see emerging), boho blonde is all the joy of a summer hair hangover. I am writing this article holed up at my desk, hiding from the rain that has suddenly appeared. If this weather is anything to go by, it seems that autumn is well and truly on its way. As the new season approaches, I am starting to feel that familiar itch for a new autumn hairstyle, and judging by this year's hair trends, it seems that a shorter hair trend is the way to go right now.

"Shorter hair for autumn is really what it’s about when it comes to a refresh or new vibe for the season [ahead]," confirms Dom Seeley, top hair stylist and international creative director for Color Wow. That being said, with so many trending short hairstyles out there, what cuts can we actually expect to see in the upcoming months?

1. Asymmetrical Bob

First up, the asymmetrical bob is making a comeback. "Asymmetry is something that's gaining traction, and I feel we will see it more this autumn, especially around fashion week," says Seeley. "I love asymmetry in a bob style, leaving one side longer [gives an] edgier feel to it and can be worn in so many textures."

In terms of styling, Seeley recommends getting your hands on a good shine spray to smooth any flyaways and add salon-worthy gloss to your ends.

2. Classic Pixie

Next up is the classic pixie cut. "The pixie is making a revival," Seeley tells me. "We have seen so many variations [over] the last few years, but a classic short crop is really picking up. It’s cool, effortless and chic and can be worn sleek and smooth or roughed up with texture."

"If you’re a dab hand with your styling skills, a pixie haircut can look incredible with finger waves, deep set partings or even some interest added on the edges or baby hairs to give a more feminine feel," says Seeley.

Don't want to go super short this season? Why not try a popular midi-length hairstyle instead? Midi-length [hairstyles] are gaining popularity for the autumn," says Seeley. "[This style] is understated, chic and minimalist without overcomplicating [anything]. It’s fun as a first step from going long to short, and enough of a change to [make an] impact."

If you have finer hair, Seeley says that this is a great length to make hair strands appear thicker and fuller. "A little layering is always key in my eye, as it keeps it effortless, free-flowing and low maintenance." In terms of styling, try a volumising mousse to ensure your look lasts all day.

The Italian bob has been in style for a while now, but it shows no signs of slowing down this autumn. "[This trend is] super versatile and can be worn in so many ways from sleek, voluminous, textured and glam," Seeley tells me.

The key to an Italian bob is all in the styling. This look involves lots of movement and bounce, and is often a little longer compared to trends such as the French bob or micro bob, to allow for a more playful finish.

For something a little different, let me introduce you to the "trinity" cut. As explained by Seeley, this style is inspired by Carrie-Anne Moss' character, Trinity, in the popular Matrix franchise, and features a '90s crop in the back, with a deep side part through the top and sides. "It's a hybrid of a bob, a pixie and a shag haircut and can be worn in so many ways."

In terms of styling, Seeley recommends a glossy serum for that '90s shine. There's no denying that a sleek, slicked-back finish will give serious Matrix vibes.

If you already got the chop this summer, but fancy refreshing your short hair for the new season, a fringe is the way to go this autumn. "Fringes are becoming super popular again, and we do normally see bangs having a revival around autumn," adds Seeley. "However, this time it's not a specific shape, but fringes in general." From wispy to blunt, cropped to curtain, face-framing and more, bangs really are back with, well, a bang.

Seeley tells me that this trend works with a range of hairstyles, but make sure to chat to your hairdresser to ensure whatever shape, length or style of fringe you want to achieve suits your face shape and accentuates your features, instead of covering them up.

I've been keeping a keen eye on the haircuts, hair colours and hairstyles that have been brewing as we head into the cooler months, and my Pinterest board is jam-packed with ideas I want to try. 1. Biscotti Blonde

Perhaps one of the most beautiful autumn hair colours I've come across is Margot Robbie's biscotti blonde. Much like the Italian almond biscuit, it has a rich, twice-baked depth and warmth that only makes her creamy highlights sing more. The biscuity blonde base makes it a great transitional hue to keep the brightness of summer blonde balayage while toning it down a notch for autumn. Belissima.

2. Torn Fringe

Fringes are firmly back on the agenda for 2025. They never really went away (they're a timeless haircut, after all), but if you've been thinking about taking the plunge, autumn is the perfect time to try them out. Daisy Edgar-Jones' torn fringe lives in my mind rent-free with its face-framing layers that frame the eyes and brows. It gives a nonchalant, cool-girl energy, even if the rest of your hair isn't styled. But there are so many other fringe styles to choose from, too. 3. Bessette Blonde

With Sarah Pidgeon playing Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy in the upcoming American Love Story series, there's been a lot of talk about the late American fashion publicist's '90s blonde hair colour, which is a great blonde shade for autumn. With its toffee base and buttery, chunky highlights ("chunking" was the signature technique of her then hair colourist, Brad Johns), this blonde feels just as modern now as it did then. Unlike biscotti blonde, which has finely woven blonde ribbons, this sees chunkier placements of lowlights and highlights, but they still melt into the rest of the hair colour. The result is a warm, golden blonde with dimensional face-framing pieces that ooze sophistication.

4. Undone Bob

It's not autumn with a bob hairstyle trend, and this time around, we're keeping things low-maintenance. While previous seasons have seen bouncy bobs and flicked bobs, now, we're putting down the hot brushes and embracing a more pared-back mood with the undone bob. The less-is-more approach feels a little cooler, plus, it's a great excuse to get to know your natural hair texture. For a little movement, you can enhance curls with a curl cream and a diffuser, while those with straight hair can try the kinked bob—a straight bob with just a whisper of a bend in the hair that you can easily create with a hair straightener.

For brunettes, I'm seeing more and more celebrities opt for monochromatic block colours rather than the honeyed brunette balayages and dimensional highlights that have dominated over the past couple of years. It's a great choice for current brunettes who want to tap into a deeper, moodier vibe for autumn without having anything too drastic. Plus, the deep, iced brunette hues always have the glossiest shine that makes them look all the more expensive. It's easy enough to achieve in the salon with a tint or hair gloss to take your current shade down a few hues, but you can also find some brilliant at-home hair glosses that will give you the look without needing to commit to box colour.

6. The Pixie

I've been spying so many chic pixie cuts of late, and it's by far one of the most elegant and chic short haircuts of all time. Not to mention, it can also be a very low-maintenance short haircut to style at home, too. For autumn, I'm seeing more and more of the longer pixie cuts with plenty of layers and choppy fringes that make it look thick and full of volume. It's an odd thing to say, I know, but I do consider myself a bob expert. I spend my days looking at bob inspiration and quizzing experts on the latest looks—but I have never had a bob myself. Although there are so many good bob hair trends out there, one thing that has consistently put me off getting the chop is the idea that I wouldn't be able to style my hair into an updo anymore. I am quite lazy when it comes to my hair routine, so I constantly rely on sleek buns and ponytails to help me look more put together. First up is an absolute classic. You simply can't go wrong with this hairstyle. It always looks elegant and works wonderfully when styling a bob. Simply part your hair in the middle and secure it into a low bun at the nape of your neck. My advice? Use a silk scrunchie to secure your bob in place to minimise damage to the hair.

If you want something a bit more relaxed, why not try this half-up, half-down hairstyle? I love this look as you get the best of both worlds. There are multiple ways to achieve it, but my favourite is by using a small claw clip to secure my hair at the back. Again, I like to part my hair in the middle, separate the top section with my fingers and secure this in place. I never aim for a super neat finish as I like that more effortless effect.

This look is a little more complicated than the ones above, but it's perfect for a dressier outfit or a special occasion. You may think you need longer hair for this look, but as you can see, a French twist works well with a bob hairstyle too. Simply twist the hair around your finger and move upwards before securing in place with a large pin.
