I’m not trying to brag, but as a beauty writer who’s tried a lot of different braid hairstyles over the years, I have a pretty good idea of which braid styles actually protect the hair and which ones to avoid due to the high manipulation needed to install them.

It’s normal to shed hair daily, but there’s a point where it shifts from normal to noticeable. Thomson notes that warning signs include “more hair on the pillow or in the shower, a significant amount of hair on the brush, hair feeling less dense, a widening part, or increased scalp visibility when wet.” He adds that if multiple symptoms persist for more than three months, it’s worth seeking a consultation to understand the underlying cause. I don't think I've ever spoken as much about hair health as I have in the past few months. So, I spoke to Anabel Kingsley, trichologist and brand president of Philip Kingsley, about whether an LED hairbrush was a worthwhile addition to my haircare routine, and I even roped in some more Who What Wear UK team members who were experiencing similar issues with their hair to help put these tools to the test.

What Can an LED Hairbrush Help With?

"Light therapy is thought to prolong the growth phase of the hair growth cycle, as well as encourage resting follicles to re-enter the growth phase," explains Kingsley. "It may also be anti-inflammatory, and inflammation is present in both male and female pattern hair loss." That being said, Kingsley tells me that whilst there is evidence that LED can help support hair growth, an LED hairbrush is more suitable for early signs of thinning and is more effective when used alongside other established treatments.

"Devices with teeth that part the hair can be better if you have thicker or denser hair. Consistency is key, so choose a device that you enjoy using," she adds.

How Often Do You Need to Use an LED Hairbrush?

As mentioned, consistency is key. "Female and male pattern hair loss are progressive hair loss conditions, so any treatment you use needs to be ongoing," Kingsley explains. "Frequency of use varies between devices, and you should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Usually, this is 3-4 times per week."

Editor review: I wanted to try an LED hairbrush to see if it could help with my scalp psoriasis. Cloud Nine’s LED Hair Care Brush is billed as a "breakthrough" that supports scalp health and helps hair appear thicker and shinier, and whilst I don’t really have any complaints with my hair in these areas, I’ll never say no to more thickness and shine! The brush is cordless (it comes with a charger) and is super lightweight, so it has fitted pretty seamlessly into my evening routine. I use it whilst I’m reading in bed, passing it through my hair so I cover my whole scalp. I then go through again, brushing up from the bottom as my scalp is particularly itchy around my ears and the nape of my neck.

The brush has three settings: vibrate, red LED and blue LED. Blue LED has been shown to reduce inflammation in mild-to-moderate scalp psoriasis by slowing skin cell turnover. Whilst it’s too early to see true results yet, I’ve been using it daily for around three weeks and can report that my scalp feels soothed and a little less itchy with consistent use. My only gripe is that the instructions say to run through the settings for one minute each, but the brush is lacking a built-in timer to indicate when it’s time to switch to the next setting. That said, you can use it for up to 20 minutes at a go, so there’s no danger if you end up running over the recommended time. I've always been blessed with thick hair, which means I've never even considered adding a scalp oil or scalp serum into my haircare routine. Sure, I've moaned about it at times, complaining about how long it takes to wash and dry or how much my arm hurts after using my hair straightener, but really, I know how lucky I am. Well, that was the case until about a few months ago, when I was styling my hair into a ponytail and noticed it was seriously thinning and breaking around the front of my head.

I have to say, it's incredibly simple to use, and it has been easy to slot into my daily beauty routine. The brand advises applying three to four pipettes on damp or dry hair; however, I personally found this a little too much product, and instead used around one to two pipettes per evening. I applied it to my scalp before bed, massaged it in, then styled my hair into a plait or low ponytail to sleep. I was worried I would wake up with greasy roots, but this product sinks in quickly and is genuinely undetectable the next day. It smells fresh and powdery, too, so I actually loved using this in between wash days. In fact, I've not even reached for a hair perfume since using this.

Whilst there's no major hair regrowth, it's early days, and I have high hopes for the future. And although this might initially sound like quite a high-maintenance routine is in your future, the truth is that with a few simple product swaps, you too can give your hair the viral glass-effect. And these have gone beyond the simple hair glosses that we saw almost every brand bring out last year. What Is Glass Hair?

"Glass hair refers to hair that is polished, high-shine and ultra-sleek—think hair adverts where the hair looks almost reflective it's so glossy. It's noticeable when hair moves, as if light is bouncing straight off the surface. The finish is smooth, frizz-free and precise, often worn in a sharp bob or as long, liquid lengths. It's not about masking the hair with shine spray, but surface perfection. When the cuticle lies completely flat and aligned, hair reflects light more evenly, creating a glass-like effect," says Collier.

Is Glass Hair Possible for All Hair Types?

"Healthy hair is the real foundation for creating the glass hair effect. Damaged, porous strands struggle to reflect light evenly, so treatments are just as important as styling. Straight and fine hair types will find it easier to achieve the glass hair look because the cuticle already lies relatively flat. Wavy, curly or coily textures can absolutely create a glass finish too, but it usually requires either a silk press, blow-dry stretch, or smoothing treatment first. Alternatively, curls can be made glass-like by enhancing definition and shine rather than fully straightening."

How Do You Get Glass Hair?

1. Start with a clarifying shampoo and conditioner, as you want to use a smoothing shampoo and conditioner to remove buildup and begin sealing the cuticle.

2. Before blow-drying the hair, work a lightweight serum or blow-dry cream alongside a hybrid heat protectant, and work either through damp hair to prep and protect. You don't need to look for products that say "volume/root boost" as the focus is on polished results for glass hair.

3. When drying the hair, use a nozzle and a paddle or round brush, directing airflow downward to smooth the cuticle flat. If you want to create the ultra-slick finish, use straighteners in small sections for a precise, glossy finish. One slow pass is better than multiple quick ones.

4. Finish with a shine serum or spray—it can be a hair oil, but whatever your preference, only apply sparingly to mid-lengths and ends, as less is more. You want reflective, not greasy.

5. Adapt your hair routine if you don't already use a hair mask 1-2 times weekly, depending on how dry and damaged your hair is.

What Ingredients Should I Look for in a Glass-Hair Product?

"Amino acids support smoothness, as do plant oils like argan, jojoba and camellia, which add gloss without the heaviness. Avoid heavy butters as they can dull shine. For a look like glass hair, silicones (ingredients like dimethicone and amodimethicone) are actually one of the most effective ingredients because they physically smooth and seal the cuticle. When the cuticle lies flat, hair reflects light evenly, and that’s exactly what creates that mirror-like shine. Older or heavier silicones (particularly in very rich formulas) can accumulate on the hair if you’re not cleansing properly. Over time, that can make hair feel coated or flat, but modern formulations are much more refined."

Cold air outside, dry central heating indoors and product overload also disrupt the hair’s moisture balance."

In other words, even well-maintained hair is under pressure. So yes, it’s safe to assume it may not be looking its absolute best right now. The first step? A decisive trim. "This will give you a healthier base to work from and prevent splits from moving up the hair shaft and causing further damage," Cook advises.

But restoring strength is only half the story. Maintaining a sleek, glossy finish requires intention and consistency. With a considered haircare routine and expert insight, strengthening strands becomes far less daunting. Think of this as a strength training plan for your hair, because healthy hair isn’t just about quick fixes, it’s about understanding what it truly needs. The good news? With the right balance, even compromised lengths can make a refined return to their former glory.

1. Treat Your Scalp Like Skin

"Your scalp is your hair’s support system," says Anabel Kingsley, lead trichologist and brand president at Philip Kingsley. "It’s skin, and it needs similar care to the skin on your face."

Good scalp hygiene is essential for healthy hair growth, which means washing it regularly, ideally every other day or even daily, advises Kingsley. If you have fine hair and are washing it less in hopes of reducing greasiness, Kingsley says this is pointless. "Contrary to popular belief, hair cannot be 'trained' to produce less oil by washing it less. In fact, product buildup can clog follicles and compromise hair growth."

Flaky or irritated scalps are also common in colder months due to wind, stress and central heating. Kingsley suggests targeted scalp treatments and overnight serums, which can help balance oil, strengthen the scalp barrier and support long-term hair health.

2. Up Your Moisture Game

A shift in texture, subtle thinning or increased hair loss can feel alarming, but these changes are often the result of entirely normal, cumulative stressors. Seasonal fluctuations, heat styling, lifestyle demands and even product overload can gradually compromise the hair fibre, leaving it weaker, drier and more prone to damage over time. The result? Hair that’s not just dry on the surface, but weakened through the mid-lengths and ends after losing both water and protein support.

Rather than just relying on heavy, occasional treatments, Cook recommends consistent, lightweight hydration (like conditioner) to reinforce the hair fibre without weighing it down. "Used regularly, moisture-focused products that combine hydration with protein support help hair stay resilient, softer and shinier, instead of just repairing damage once it’s already done."

3. Cut Back on Damage-Causing Habits

If you’re trying to strengthen your hair, experts agree it’s time to pause chemical processes like bleaching, keratin treatments or frequent colouring.

"These processes force open the cuticle and break internal bonds," reveals trichologist Hannah Gaboardi. Over time, this leads to protein and lipid loss, increased porosity and damage to the cortex, the part of the hair responsible for strength and elasticity.

Heat styling should also be limited. Cook advises keeping it to once a week, where possible, or less, as constant heat dries and weakens the hair shaft.

Finally, avoiding tight hairstyles is also a good shout, as overuse can delay regrowth and place tension on already weakened follicles. "Styles such as braids, ponytails, weaves and extensions can cause excessive stress on the scalp, leading over time to follicle damage and potential hair loss, particularly around the hairline, temples and nape of the neck. Less strain allows better blood flow to the scalp, helping hair receive the nutrients needed for healthy growth," explains Gaboardi.

4. Use Hair Masks Strategically

"A hair mask helps deeply hydrate, improve elasticity and reduce breakage," explains Gaboardi. Masks work by filling in weak or damaged areas of the cuticle, restoring strength where protein or moisture has been lost. The key to results lies in choosing the right formula.

"Protein and amino-acid rich masks help rebuild structure, while oil and lipid-based formulas smooth and protect the hair shaft by sealing in hydration," she adds.

If hair feels weak, stretchy when wet, snaps easily or won’t hold its shape, it’s usually a sign that the internal structure needs support. This points to protein loss, meaning a mask rich in amino acids or proteins will help rebuild strength and resilience.

If hair feels rough, dull, frizzy or dry but doesn’t necessarily break, dehydration is more likely the issue. In this case, oil- and lipid-rich masks are better suited, as they smooth the cuticle and seal in moisture.

As for how often? Aim to use a hair mask once or twice a week, especially if you’re heat styling more frequently or spending time in dry, centrally heated environments

5. Protect Hair From Stress

Small changes can make a big difference when hair is fragile. Microfibre towels, silk pillowcases and shower filters all help reduce unnecessary stress on hair and scalp.

Cotton pillowcases are particularly troublesome. "Cotton is highly absorbent, so it saps moisture from strands," explains Gaboardi. "But swapping to a silk pillowcase helps hair retain moisture overnight," she adds.

Gaboardi also recommends an at-home shower filter. "It can support hair health by removing harsh minerals, such as magnesium, that leave hair dry and brittle. By reducing mineral buildup, it helps minimise breakage and keeps the hair shaft stronger and better nourished." Even better, shower filters may also support scalp health by easing dandruff, itchiness and irritation, allowing follicles to thrive.

6. Support Hair Strength From the Inside Out

Hair health doesn’t begin and end with products. "Blood tests and nutritional support are crucial, especially for women experiencing thinning, breakage or post-pregnancy shedding," says Gaboardi.

She adds, "Many women have underlying iron or vitamin deficiencies that directly affect hair growth and strength, so levels need to be in the higher range to support healthy growth." This is particularly important for those with PCOS, endometriosis or postpartum hair loss.

A nutrient-rich diet high in iron, protein, biotin, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, alongside targeted supplementation, can help strengthen the hair shaft, reduce breakage and promote healthier growth overall.

For more advanced concerns, Gaboardi notes that in-clinic treatments such as PRP may be considered. "The treatment uses concentrated platelets from the patient’s own blood, which are injected into areas of thinning to stimulate follicles and support hair growth and scalp health."

Growing up, I always noticed the stark difference between my hair and that of the other women in my immediate family. Unlike my thick, curly hair, my mother and grandmother had straight, fine hair. Start with hair that is fully dry, as shine spray on damp hair can make it look flat.

1. Always prep the hair first. If you live in a hard water area, use a shower filter so you are working with the cleanest canvas.

2. If your shine spray is meant to be used on damp hair, apply it after using a leave-in conditioner.

3. Style your hair as usual.

3. If your shine spray is meant to be used on dry hair, hold the shine spray about 30cm from the head and mist lightly. Think a fine veil (never a heavy coat).

4. Use your hands to gently polish the mid-lengths and ends. Avoid the roots unless you want a very sleek look.

5. For maximum glow, finish with one drop of a hair oil on the ends. It seals everything in without adding weight.

This may sound vain, but one of the features that I take the most pride in is my hair. Because there’s no bleach, peroxide, or ammonia involved whatsoever in the formula, this gloss is safe to use whenever, wherever—all you need to do is slather it on your hair instead of conditioner and leave it on for three to 30 minutes (I usually shave while I wait for the gloss to do its magic) before rinsing it out.

How Long Should You Keep Braids In?

Most braids can be worn for four to six weeks, depending on the style and how well they're maintained. Too long, and you risk matting and breakage. Listen to your hair. Once you start noticing buildup, obvious overgrowth, frizz or if your scalp feels itchy no matter how much you refresh it, it’s probably time to take them out.

Top tip: To keep braids looking fresher for longer, Tosin Johnson, owner of SIMPLYGorgeous, advises to “lightly mist with water and braid spray every few days to keep them fresh and hydrated.” You also can’t go wrong with “protecting at night and preventing frizz by sleeping in a satin bonnet or scarf,” Jonhson adds.

How Do You Keep Braids Clean?

You don’t have to drench your whole head to keep your braids fresh. The big focus should be on your scalp. Use a gentle cleanser or diluted shampoo in an applicator bottle to target buildup and rinse lightly. Johnson adds, "Start with a well-hydrated and cleansed scalp, so do a good wash with a shampoo such as The Steam Bar Scalp Shampoo, £30.” For boho/mermaid/goddess braids, Johnson also advises, “Blend curly human hair into different sections throughout the braid for that effortless boho vibe, then use a curl-defining mousse to keep the free pieces bouncy. Avoid heavy oils so the curls don’t matte or look stringy.”

Top tip: Put a wig cap on while washing braids and wash through it to protect the partings and keep braid frizz to a minimum. Some rosemary hair oil goes a long way to moisturise, and be gentle with those edges.

How to Prep Hair Before Braiding

Healthy braids start with healthy hair. That means a good wash, deep condition and a hydrating base to make sure your strands stay moisturised underneath the style to help prevent breakage. “Always prep your hair with a hydrating leave-in conditioner before braiding to ensure it’s well moisturised in the braid, and wrap your hair at night to prevent frizzing,” says Johnson.

Claire Martin, curl educator at The Doux UK, advises, “Use a base gel for neat partings (Try: The Doux Push It! Honey Braid & Edge Gel, £14) and follow with a foam for a smooth base and frizz-free hold (Try: The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam, £16). Lock in moisture with coconut, rose, avocado and monoi oil.”

Johnson doubles down on this. "Apply a strengthening serum, like Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Oil (£11), beforehand to protect your strands. Lightly mist with water and braid spray every few days to keep them fresh and hydrated."

How to Protect Your Scalp While Wearing Braids

Don’t ignore your scalp just because it’s tucked under braids. Make sure your style isn’t too tight and give your roots some love throughout the week. A tension-free base is key. Use soothing products like aloe-based sprays or oils to calm your scalp if needed.

"Wrap your hair at night with a silk or satin scarf to reduce friction. Lightly mist your scalp with water and braid spray every few days to keep it hydrated and calm," says Johnson.

Top tip: Use lightweight extensions (perhaps even plant-based) and a gentle shampoo while wearing a wig cap to keep things clean.

Can You Work Out or Swim with Braids?

You can absolutely swim with braids. Braids are made for movement; you just need a rinse-and-dry game plan post-activity. Just rinse your scalp with water after workouts or swims to remove sweat and chlorine, and pat your braids dry with a microfiber towel. Wear a swim cap for chlorine-heavy pools and always dry your braids completely after exposure to water.

Four years ago, I made one of the biggest changes of my life. In October 2020, I underwent the "big chop," trimming my chemically altered hair to the root for my natural texture to make a triumphant return. Going back to natural coils also prompted a deep edit of the hair products I used daily and required relearning how to care for them. In truth, I wouldn't have known where to begin my natural hair journey if not for the guidance of trusted hairstylists who taught me about celebrity hairstylist and educator Andre Walker's popular curl-typing system.

To get a better idea of what the different curl types are and what each needs to thrive, I tapped Maria Sotiriou, curl specialist and founder of Silke London, and celebrity hairstylist Sophie Rose Gutterman to share the perfect curly hair routine for your needs and their favourite products designed to enhance curls of all types. Whether you're looking to completely revamp your haircare routine or have yet to be introduced to your hair type, they've got you covered. The Different Curl Types

"Curly hair" is an umbrella term used to describe hair with tighter textures and the pattern of individual hair strands. The texture of each is categorized as being fine, medium, or coarse. "Each category is determined by the circumference of individual strands," Sotiriou explains. A hair type is assigned to determine how we expect the hair to act. "1a, 1b, and 1c hair is straight hair and will probably be difficult to style and hold a curl, whereas 4c type hair will be coily, but the texture can be fine and delicate even though you might not think it is," she says.

If you're unsure of where your strands fall on the spectrum, you're in luck. Sotiriou tells me there's a quick trick to revealing the nature of your hair. "The easiest way to determine curl pattern is by looking to see if the curl rotates round and back to sit just below the curl above. That would probably be coily hair," Sotiriou says. "If the hair curls around but drops lower when moving into the next curl, that is probably curly hair. Finally, if the hair doesn't curl back around but drops into a bend, that is wavy hair."

Is it possible for there to be different curl types on a single head of hair? According to Gutterman, not only can someone have multiple curl types in different locations, but they can also change over time. "It can be [more] curly, and the texture over time can get straight or be different from heat damage, chemicals, or even taking hormonal supplements," she explains. It's also helpful to know if your curls are high or low porosity, since water and products can enter the hair but also leave it easily. "Hair porosity will play a big role in how much product you need. Depending on how well your hair retains water, you may have to use a more hydrating leave-in," says Gutterman.

Type 2 (Wavy Hair)

Type 2 curls range from fine to coarse textures, are bendable, hold their shape, and grow in an S-shaped pattern from the scalp. To extend the longevity of styles with type 2 curls and reduce the chance of flattening, try diffusing your curls for maximum volume and definition. Then, finish off with a lightweight holding spray.

2a: This curl type features a fine texture that can be easily straightened. It also tends to lack volume at the root. To give the hair more volume and fullness, consider using light hair mousse to add some fullness at the base and pump up the volume without weighing down your strands.

2b: Lying flat at the crown with defined S-shaped waves starting from mid-length, the strands of this hair type have a thicker diameter than 2a. To play up your natural waves, try using a sea salt texturizing mist.

2c: Because the 2c curl type features S-shaped bends that are defined at the root and thick, they're susceptible to frizzing. To keep your curls well-maintained and defined, use a non-lathering, sulfate-free co-wash between washdays that won't strip natural oils and moisture away. Layering styling cream with mousse will lock in moisture and add hydration.

Type 3 (Curly Hair)

Type 3 curls range from shiny, loose S-pattern curls to tight corkscrew-shaped curls that form ringlets. The secret to maintaining the health of these strands is to use products that moisturize and define while combating halo frizz. You may also see some success layering products for extended wear time.

3a: This hair type tends to be shiny and have large, loose curls. It's also one of the most fragile curl types, as any friction can create frizz. Try scrunching a curl-enhancing product into damp hair to emphasise its texture and spritz with a lightweight curl refresher.

3b: Strands with a 3b curl type come in the form of springy, tight ringlets. This texture can get dry, so make sure you use curl gel formulated with humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and aloe vera to attract moisture, offer definition, and deter frizz.

3c: This curl type is defined by densely packed, high-volume curls that are impacted by humidity, resulting in frizz. To stop your curls from drying out, use sulfate-free, creamy cleansers followed by mousse and styling cream while your hair is still wet.

Type 4 (Coily Hair)

Type 4 hair—also referred to as kinky or Afro textured—features tight, small curls that are naturally dry and can range from fine to coarse. They form tight, Z-shaped strands at the scalp and often experience shrinkage without help from products formulated to lengthen and define the hair. No matter how these curls are styled, moisture is their best friend!

4a: If someone has 4a curls, it means the hair has a visible curl pattern with springy, densely packed, S-shaped coils. Try pairing a curl cream with leave-in conditioner and incorporating a scalp massager in your haircare routine to detox the scalp while reducing buildup.

4b: This densely packed curl type has sharp, Z-shaped angles instead of coils that can be shaped and styled in many ways. Because this hair type is prone to dryness, combine priming and moisture sprays with leave-in conditioners with hydrating curl creams between washes.

4c: The 4c pattern has a zigzag shape like 4b curls, but it's less defined and sometimes indiscernible to the eye. This curl type also experiences more shrinkage than any other curl type. Avoid using products containing sulfates that strip the hair of moisture. Instead, opt for natural oils like argan, shea butter, and coconut oil in leave-in conditioners and creams to keep the hair moisturised.

Building a Curly Hair Routine

For anyone who's just beginning to learn about their curls, consider scaling back on hairstyling products and heat-styling to focus solely on creating a haircare routine built around the wellness of your hair. This can be done by trimming your strands every 10 to 12 weeks and using pre-wash oiling treatments, hydrating/repairing products, leave-in conditioning creams, heat protection, and sleep protection.

"All your hard work is lost unless you use nighttime hair protection to protect not only your hair but also all the products you've applied to your hair from being lost to the abrasive fabrics of your pillowcase," Sotiriou says.

Unsure of where to start on your curly hair journey? Below, Sotiriou shares four steps you can take to promote healthy, thriving curls through hydration, styling, and maintenance as well as the products she recommends adding to your natural haircare lineup for the best possible results. She likes to call her go-to routine the "lock in, ease out, maintain" method.

1. Lock In (Hydrate): Wash the scalp with a moisturising, protein-rich shampoo that will bring your hair to a level where you will need far fewer styling products. Follow with a hair mask or conditioner and distribute product through the hair with a wide-tooth comb or a wet brush, rinse, squeeze out excess water and apply a leave-in conditioner.
2. Ease Out (Cast and Release Curls): Apply curl mousse, styling cream, or styling gel before leaving the hair to dry and set into curls. Once set, rub oil serum into the palms of your hands, tip your head upside down, and squeeze the serum into the mid-lengths and ends of the hair.
3. Maintain (Make Curls Last): Extend your curly style by protecting it overnight with a silk hair wrap. Sleeping on curls without it will cause your curls to frizz and dehydrate. You'll also want to avoid overwashing!

Additionally, finding a line of products that works for your particular haircare needs and sticking with it will reap the best results. "I promise you will always be searching for the perfect product, but my honest opinion is that it doesn't exist for everyone. The product that works for your bestie will not give you the same results because you have different hair," says Gutterman. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t until I cut my long hair and started trying to style a bob that I actually started using a hair dryer. For years, I’ve sat firmly in team air dry, choosing instead to let my strands dry slowly in their natural state.

Why? Well, for the most part, I’m lazy, and air drying has long meant one less thing for me to do when it comes to styling my hair. Secondly, blow drying has always been a skill I’ve struggled to master, and so I’ve always preferred to leave it to the professionals rather than attempt to give myself a bouncy blowout at home. That’s not to say I’ve sacrificed on achieving a sleek, shiny look, however, only that I’ve had to look for other ways to achieve it.

For glam occasions, that usually means a sweep with a straightener or curling tong once my hair has dried fully to create my desired style; however, at times, even that feels like too much work. It is on these more low-maintenance days that I lean into my natural texture and rely on the best air-dry products to define my naturally wavy hair and offer a more effortless look—products like hair creams and wave sprays, which add shape and reduce frizz without the need for added heat.

Before we get onto exactly what those products are, however, let’s talk about air drying as a whole, as there is a lot of advice circling in the beauty world on the effect air drying can have on your hair. To get to the bottom of it, I thought why not speak to an expert in the form of Neale Rodger, style director at STIL salon. Here’s what he had to say…

Is Air Drying Good for Your Hair?

“Yes, it can be! Air drying is a great way to avoid heat damage from blow dryers and styling tools, but only if you do it right,” he tells me. “A few things to keep in mind: hair is super fragile when it’s wet, so rough towel drying or aggressive brushing is a no-no. Also, having wet hair all day isn’t ideal either, as this can cause hygral fatigue, which basically means your hair gets worn out from soaking and drying it over and over.” So, if you find your hair takes hours to dry, it may not be the best method for you.

“Leaving it wet can also cause a fungus to grow, which will give symptoms such as dandruff,” Rodger continues, so if you’re noticing these problems, you may want to look into your drying routine. “I would say, however, air drying is especially great for wavy, curly or fine hair that tends to freak out under heat. Just let it relax into place.”

Is It Bad to Sleep With Wet Hair?

“It’s not the best habit,” says Rodger. “Wet hair is weak hair, and tossing and turning can cause breakage, frizz or those lovely morning cowlicks. A damp scalp also creates a cosy environment for fungus and dandruff, which no one invited. And let’s be real, you’ll probably wake up with weird, lumpy, mystery texture hair.”

“If you have to sleep with wet hair, however, use a silk pillowcase or wrap your hair in a silk scarf,” Rodger advises. “Do a loose braid to help keep it from going wild, and towel dry or hit it with a little low heat before bed if you can.”

How to Air Dry Your Hair Nicely

“My first piece of advice is to swap your towel for a microfibre one or a cotton t-shirt, as these fabrics cause less friction and are way gentler on your strands,” says Rodger. “Add a leave-in conditioner or curl cream right after washing to keep things smooth and defined and avoid touching your hair while it’s drying as this teases the cuticles back up.”

“Got waves or curls? I would try wrapping your hair up in a t-shirt or putting it into a loose protective style, such as a braid, to shape things nicely,” he continues. “Always let hair dry in a space with good airflow, not a steamy bathroom, and detangle gently while it’s still wet using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Be gentle, and the best result will come.”

As a beauty editor who has experienced hair loss firsthand, I know how distressing it can be. There are tonnes of products for hair loss and hair growth out there, which can not only make it extremely tricky to choose from, but also to know for sure what actually works (and where to invest your money). And while I'd always recommend seeing a trichologist as an ideal first port of call when treating hair loss, booking in for an expensive clinic consultation is not always feasible for most.

So, I've asked Anabel Kingsley, consultant trichologist and brand president for Philip Kingsley, to share everything you need to know about hair loss and what to look for when buying products for hair loss. Ahead, I've shared some of the products I've been recommended for hair loss over the years that I've tried firsthand.

What to Look For

Hair loss is a complicated topic (we've covered some of the most common FAQs below), and most trichologists will recommend prescription medications to treat signs of hair loss. "For female pattern hair loss, minoxidil is one of the most effective products and tends to be prescription-only," says Kingsley.

"If you do not wish to use Minoxidil and prefer to go down a less medicated route, topical melatonin and caffeine may help," she says. "Shampooing a few times a week with an anti-fungal shampoo can also help. From Philip Kinglsey, we have our Density Drops (£50) and Density Toner (£21). I like to use them in tandem, applying one in the morning and one at night."

While it can be tempting to follow TikTok trends and viral products, trichologists advise otherwise. "I wouldn’t recommend rosemary oil, as the one study conducted was very flawed. Anyone with ongoing hair loss should see their doctor, dermatologist or trichologist for a blood test to ensure that an unresolved internal factor isn’t contributing," says Kingsley.

Similarly, if a hair loss product sounds too good to be true, it probably is. "My general advice when selecting hair growth products is to always look at what the brand is saying and their marketing messaging," says Kingsley. "Misleading claims are an indication that their products are not trustworthy. Things like promising regrowth in less than three months, using before and after photos of patchy hair loss or claiming a peptide blend, rosemary oil or castor oil will cure female pattern hair loss are good indications you should look elsewhere," she says.

What Causes Hair Loss?

"There are many different types of hair loss, but the two that most commonly impact women are female pattern hair loss and telogen effluvium (excessive daily hair shedding)," says Kingsley. "Hair loss in women is often multi-faceted. Menstruation, hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause, as well as the medications we take, like oral contraceptive pills, can all impact our hair," she says. "Societal pressures regarding women’s bodies can also contribute; crash dieting and restrictive eating are common causes of hair loss."

Common triggers are:

• -Vitamin and mineral deficiencies: "Particularly in women, iron and ferritin (stored iron) deficiency are very common due to monthly blood loss from our periods," says Kingsley. "You are more prone to iron/ferritin deficiency if you have heavy periods, which often occurs alongside conditions like endometriosis and adenomyosis."
• Illnesses such as the flu, covid or pneumonia
• Any high fever
• Surgery under general anaesthesia
• Miscarriage
• Childbirth
• Medication changes: "Anything that rapidly manipulates hormone levels, like starting or stopping an oral contraceptive pill or drugs given in preparation for egg/embryo freezing," says Kingsley.
• Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause
• Intense stress, bereavement or shock
• Thyroid disorders
• Rapid weight loss, or restrictive eating
• Certain medications

Types of Hair Loss

As Kingsley mentioned above, there are several types of hair loss, but two of the most common types in women are female pattern hair loss (FPHL) and telogen effluvium (TV).

Female Pattern Hair Loss

"Female pattern hair loss is a slow and progressive loss of hair density on the scalp. Hair follicles gradually shrink and hairs become shorter and finer with each growth cycle, leading to increased scalp visibility," says Kingsley.

"It usually affects the top of our scalp and, unlike with men, is more spread out and doesn’t cause actual bald patches. FPHL is linked to genes, and we are just beginning to understand the driving factors. For some, it can be due to an excess of male hormones (such as androgens or testosterone, as is seen with polycystic ovary syndrome), but more commonly, it’s simply that hair follicles are sensitive to normal levels of androgens. It has also been postulated that FPHL can be influenced by the ratio of our estrogen to testosterone levels," she says. Lifestyle and environmental factors, as well as age, can play a part too.

Telogen Effluvium

"Telogen effluvium (TE) is not genetic and can impact anyone of any age. It’s a reactive hair loss that occurs about 2-4 months after the event that caused it," says Kingsley.

"Hair is an excellent barometer of general health, and it is very sensitive to internal fluxes. Being non-essential tissue, our bodies give it the last priority. Hair cells are also the second-fastest dividing cells our bodies produce, making their energy requirements incredibly high," she says.

"Because of this, hair shedding is often one of the first signs of an underlying imbalance. Some cases of TE self-correct if the trigger was transient, like a high fever," she says. "But other cases can be ongoing, like from nutritional deficiencies or thyroid imbalances, and do need the underlying cause found and treated."

How to Treat Hair Loss

Generally speaking, you'll find that most trichologists will treat hair loss holistically, both with treatments and by assessing your overall health. "The hair follicle is a reactive, sensitive mini organ that is incredibly in-tune to our general health, as well as to the health of the tissue supporting it (i.e., our scalp!)" says Kingsley. "Hair loss is often due to more than one thing, and to treat it effectively, you must look at the whole picture—scalp health, diet, stress levels, oxidative stress, genetics, general health, and, of course, the quality and condition of hair," she says.

"While certain types of hair loss, like female pattern hair loss, are largely genetic, optimising all variables that can impact hair growth will give you the best results from any topical or oral treatments you use. Like with skincare, it’s not just about the creams and serums you use on your face, but how you are looking after your body," she says.

"There are also types of hair loss—like those resulting from iron, ferritin, vitamin D or vitamin B12 deficiency, underactive thyroid and stress—that cannot be treated simply by using a product. You need to find the cause and address it with relevant medications, supplements and/or dietary and lifestyle changes," says Kingsley.

"Treatment varies depending on what type of hair loss you have. So, finding out exactly what type of hair loss you have is the first step. Is it female pattern hair loss or telogen effluvium—or both? Perhaps it’s neither of these. I’d suggest going to a trichologist or your dermatologist if you are concerned. I understand that not everyone is able to do this, so here are some clues," says Kingsley.

How to Work Out Type of Hair Loss

"If handfuls of hair are coming out each day from all over your scalp, it is likely you have telogen effluvium," says Kingsley. "This can cause as many as three times the normal amount of hair to come out per day, so 300 vs 100," she says. "Sometimes there’s an obvious trigger, like being unwell 2-4 months prior, or starting a medication. This type of TE usually stops on its own and doesn’t need treatment. That said, it does really help to take an active role in your recovery—plus there are certain topicals that can help keep hairs in the growth phase for longer, which does lead to a decrease in shedding and helps your hair recover faster," says Kingsley.

"If there’s no obvious cause for your TE, and/or it has been going on for more than 4-6 months, see your GP for blood tests," she says.

"If you haven’t experienced obvious extra shedding but suddenly find your scalp is more visible over the top/crown and/or your parting is wider, this is a good indication of female pattern hair loss," says Kingsley. "The most well-researched and effective treatment for FPHL is Minoxidil—either topical or oral," she says. "You do have to be consistent as it only works for as long as you use it and, if you stop, your hair will revert to its former density and then continue to decline."

Treatments for Hair Loss

"As female pattern hair loss is progressive, it’s important to treat it from the get-go with evidence-based ingredients—don’t jump on the latest Instagram trend," says Kingsley.

"I prefer topical minoxidil as it has fewer risks of side effects and it can be compounded with other hair supportive actives like hormones, anti-androgens and/or anti-inflammatory ingredients," she says.

"For telogen effluvium, do not use minoxidil. This can make your hair shedding much worse and usually isn’t necessary or recommended," says Kingsley. "Instead, use a blend with peptides and ingredients such as melatonin, caffeine, sandalore, anti-inflammatories and antioxidants."

Anti-androgens can also support hair loss treatment. "For hair loss from PCOS, spironolactone can help, as can certain oral contraceptive pills. For this, you need to speak to your GP or dermatologist as it isn’t suitable for everyone and carries a risk of side effects," says Kingsley.

"Anyone’s hair will benefit from eating well, managing stress and looking after the scalp. A flaky scalp and scalp inflammation can contribute to hair loss, so it’s important to shampoo regularly and address scalp issues, like dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis," she says. "If you have hair loss occurring in patches, or your hair loss is accompanied by scalp pain, redness or inflammation, you should see a specialist."

While I don't consider myself a naturally sporty person, I do like to get moving throughout my day to counter the hours I spend typing away at my desk. When I get some free time in my schedule, you'll find me stretching on my yoga mat, doing reformer Pilates, or taking a walk through the park with a matcha latte. That said, I wouldn't be completely honest if I didn't mention the monumental role my natural coils and heat-treated tendrils have played in my wellness journey.

My long hair has become such a part of my identity that the thought of ever cutting it into a bob (no matter how chic some of the short trends look) fills me with intense fear. I have spent my entire adult life utilising the best hair oils and having regular trims in a bid to prevent hair breakage and keep my lengths as healthy as possible—and I'm not about to undo all of that work.

In fact, while the rest of the beauty world appears to be chopping off their hair in favour of a bob, I am taking this time to lean into my lengths, meaning I'm receiving more interest in my routine than ever before. You see, because my long hair has become a sort of trademark for me as a beauty director, in recent months I have been bombarded with questions in relation to my lengths: How do I grow my hair so long? How do I keep my hair knot free? How do I stop my fine, thin hair from breaking? And while I don't have a definitive answer on how to get the long hair of your dreams, I do know this: if my long hair is my comfort blanket, then Ouai Hair Oil is my go-to fabric softener.

While I typically hate using really nourishing products in my hair (its fine, straight nature means I avoid additional weight where possible and opt for volumising hair products, instead), I do appreciate that the length of it means some extra TLC is required. For years I battled breakage, split ends and general dryness (my long hair is also bleached—so that doesn't help things), but when a hair stylist recommended I try Ouai Hair Oil (along with the brand's Ouai Detox Shampoo) as a means to give my hair the nourishment it requires without weighing things down, I decided to give it a go.

And, genuinely, I've never looked back—I have been through countless bottles of the stuff. Not only is it lightweight enough that it doesn't weigh my already very flat hair down any further, but it also provides ample nourishment, can be used in a multitude of ways and generally makes my hair look (and feel) so much healthier. “Hair Oil is such a versatile product and really focuses on maintaining and improving the health of your strands," says celebrity hair stylist and founder of Ouai, Jen Atkin. "It creates a UV barrier to protect from sun damage, is formulated to provide incredible hydration and includes heat protectant which is a must when heat styling. You can apply it on wet or dry hair, plus it doubles as both a styling product and as an overnight hair mask.”

Since incorporating into my daily hair routine 18 months ago, not a day has gone by where I haven't used Ouai Hair Oil in one way or another. Here's why I think it might just be the most versatile and effective product for long hair.

The Formula

While there seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment to use one specific type of oil to "cure" all of your hair woes, I don't buy it. There are heaps of different oils that deliver different benefits, and there is absolutely no reason they shouldn't all be formulated together in one does-it-all product. Ouai Hair Oil is formulated with a whole bunch of hardworking oils, including African galanga, ama and Asian borage oils—so I like to think of this as a hair equivalent to a really hardworking, all-in-one moisturiser. As Atkin mentions, it also contains heat protectant, so you don't have to worry about using another spray or cream in your routine.

The formula has been purposefully designed to be used in a variety of ways. If you have thin or fine hair, like me, you can use it on wet hair after washing to deliver a boost of strengthening nourishment. If your hair is thicker and/or curly, it can also be applied to dry hair for extra sleekness and an added shine boost. When my hair is feeling particularly dry and damaged, I also use it as a deep treatment—applying it all over in the morning, popping it into a slicked bun for the day and washing my hair in the evening.

The Texture

Beyond how efficacious the formula is, I also think there is a lot to be said for how lightweight the texture is. For finer hair types, it is not often you come across a really hardworking and nourishing treatment that doesn't leave your hair feeling weighty and looking greasy, but the silky texture of this stuff really does get soaked up in a matter of seconds.

However, this does lead me onto my only caveat. While it is marketed as a product for all hair types (and I do think it has a place in every routine)—if you have coarse or coily hair and are used to using thicker oils and butters, you'll find yourself having to use a lot of product to get your desired results. That's not to say I can't see you using it as a daily nourisher and styling product (it's great for curl definition), but it probably isn't going to be your main port of call for deep hydration and moisture.

The Scent

It's not a Ouai product if it doesn't smell great, so it's almost needless to say that this hair oil leaves your lengths smelling exceptional. Combining notes of violet, gardenia, ylang ylang and white musk, it truly does smell like an expensive fresh, floral perfume.

The Results

After using Ouai Hair Oil.

Personally, I use Ouai Hair Oil most after washing. I apply it to towel-dried hair, warming a couple of pumps up in the palms of my hands and distributing it evenly through my mid-lengths and ends. Then, depending on how much time I have, I will either leave my hair to air dry (it makes for a great air dry product due to its sleek results) or blow dry. What I am left with is smooth, sleek hair that looks healthy, feels stronger and possesses a truly unparalleled sheen.

On 17 October, 2024, I had the best hair day of my life.

My roots felt airy and fresh; my tapered, stringy ends looked bouncy and full (despite delaying a trim for yet another three weeks—oops); and my colour appeared ten times more vibrant. All I did was saunter over to NYC's Paul Labrecque Salon & Skincare Spa for a casual (read: very extensive), multi-step scalp treatment with pro hairstylist Frederic Moine, who focused on a French skincare staple—Biologique Recherche's Lotion P50.

Those familiar with the cult favourite exfoliator might (understandably) raise a brow. How can this vinegar-smelling solution possibly help with hair? Well, allow me to reveal that P50 comes in a scalp version—called Lotion P50 Capillaire (£157)—that helps balance oil production, reduce flaking, and stimulate the skin up top. Since Moine taught me how to properly massage it into my scalp (which was an experience nothing short of marvelous, let me tell you), my hair has never looked healthier. I'm currently two-ish months into the routine, and the commitment has been well worth it. Allow me to gush about my latest winter haircare saviour.

Wait, what's P50?

For the uninitiated, let's begin with a quick download of the beloved Biologique Recherche staple. Lotion P50 (£94) is an exfoliating toner that works wonders for fading hyperpigmentation, smoothing skin texture, and brightening overall tone. In addition to standard skin-buffing heroes like lactic acid, salicylic acid, and malic acid, it contains some unconventional players like onion extract, horseradish extract, myrrh, myrtle, and vinegar for extra purification. This is why P50 has a reputation for a funky, salad dressing-like smell (some can't get past it, but I honestly don't find it too distracting!).

Biologique Recherche has launched multiple versions of the classic since its inception, including a targeted formula for dry skin, sensitive skin, and those struggling with hyperpigmentation. And in skincare circles, P50 has become a household name, lauded by derms, aestheticians, and celebrities alike for its smoothing, clearing properties. The general consensus? It's pricey—but it's worth it.

How to Use It on the Scalp

As I mentioned up top, P50 also comes in a scalp-focused solution, dubbed Lotion P50 Capillaire. It contains the same core ingredients as the aforementioned skincare savior, like AHAs and BHAs, but it also features specific, good-for-scalp actives, such as rosemary extract and niacinamide. Not to mention, it contains garlic bulb extract (which research shows can help with hair growth) and vinegar, which has purifying properties. Given those pungent actives, P50 Capillaire also has an acidic scent that doesn't exactly lend itself to a soothing spa day, but not to fret—it works best as a pre-shampoo treatment.

Simply section your hair and apply the tonic until your scalp is evenly coated, massage it gently with your fingertips, then let it marinate for about five to 10 minutes. (Like the toner, you might experience a slight tingly sensation with P50 Capillaire.) Once all those purifying, nourishing ingredients have properly soaked in, you can hop in the shower and shampoo and condition your strands as normal.

My Experience and Results

I don't have capital-D dandruff, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't accrue itching and flakes once the air turns crisper. (Maybe that means I do have moderate dandruff? Derms, weigh in!) As soon as I implemented P50 Capillaire into my routine, however, those side effects quickly started to ebb. Even just applying the solution on my scalp gave me immediate relief, the tingly formula instantly refreshing my senses.

But let me back up for a moment. In Moine's chair, I was given a full-on scalp detox treatment that lasted around one and a half hours. He first used a pipette to precisely apply the P50 solution all over my scalp before giving me a lovely, 10-minute head massage, during which I could literally feel the tension melting from my body. After said bliss, I skipped over to the wash bowl, where Moine scrubbed out all the buildup and overall gunk the P50 brought to the surface. I'll admit, it was strangely gratifying to see those white flakes swirling down the drain.

Next, he applied the brand's Masque Dermo-Apaisant, another pre-shampoo mask meant to calm any inflammation—sort of like how a facialist might apply a cooling, moisturising mask post-chemical peel to neutralise the effects. Then I headed back to the wash bowl, where Moine shampooed and deep conditioned my strands (using Biologique Recherche products, of course). Before blow-drying, he gave my lengths a healthy spritz of the brand's Keractive treatment to strengthen the hair fibre, smooth the cuticle, and provide shine. My hair has never looked glossier, smoother, or healthier—and it all started with some scalp T.L.C.

Now, I'd be lying if I said I followed this exact same routine for the next two months. I've got things to do! People to see! Dedicating 10 minutes to weekly scalp massages doesn't sound like a huge commitment, but after a particularly long work day, even 60 seconds can feel like a giant undertaking.

Yet even without the spa-grade relaxation, P50 Capillaire gave me that same level of scalp-refreshing bliss. I shampoo my hair one to two times per week, so I make sure to give my scalp a good spritz each wash day. I don't use a pipette like Moine; rather, I section my hair and apply P50 to each, massaging it in with my fingers before moving onto the next area. Once my scalp is thoroughly coated, I'll use a scalp brush for some extra stimulation, massaging all over in circular motions. The whole process takes no more than five minutes. After leaving it to marinate for around 10 minutes, I then hop in the shower and shampoo and condition as normal.

I'm currently two months into the routine, and I won't ever look back. My 2C waves air-dry to perfection—soft, smooth, and bouncy—and most importantly, my scalp feels comfortable, nary a flake in sight. Considering the frigid temperatures we've experienced in NYC lately (it's a balmy -9 degrees celcius as I type this), that's an impressive feat. Now, whenever a friend or colleague asks me if I'm a P50 fan (as I said, it's a household name!), I respond with: Yeah, the toner is great, but I think it works even better on your scalp. Call it a French haircare secret.

If you know me, then you know that I have very thick, long hair. In fact, I have so much hair that I have to make sure to book in a few extra hours at the hairdressers as my appointments take so long. Because of this, I've never really been worried about hair breakage. I figured I had so much hair that it would always be fine. Oh, how wrong I was. No matter what your hair type, we can all become victim to breakage.

I quickly became aware of this on my most recent trip to the hairdressers. After years of bleaching and heat styling, my hairdresser informed me that those shorter hairs on my head weren't new hairs coming through, but were in fact broken hairs that were incredibly damaged. I went home that day feeling a bit deflated, and decided to find out as much as I could about what causes hair breakage, and most importantly, what I could do to stop it. So, I reached out to TRESemmé brand ambassador and celebrity hair stylist, Jay Birmingham and consultant trichologist and brand president at Philip Kingsley, Anabel Kingsley, and asked them all of my burning questions. What Causes Hair Breakage?

First things first, what actually causes hair breakage? "When the hair's outer layers are compromised, this can expose the hair’s cortex (where the bonds are found) causing them to become damaged, weak and broken," says Kingsley. So, why does this happen? "Most of the time, it is due to a number of varying factors," explains Birmingham. "This can range from too much heat, colour damage, tight hairstyles and a lack of regular cuts."

How Can You Tell If You Have Hair Breakage?

Something I was keen to find out was how you can tell if your hair is breaking. Birmingham says to keep an eye on whether your hair feels rough and brittle towards the ends or whether it starts to feel thinner. "Most of us know our hair and its texture so if you begin to notice split ends or fallout, that is a tell tale sign," he adds.

Can Hair Breakage Be Repaired?

Although my main aim was to find out how to stop hair breakage, I also wanted to ask the experts if hair breakage could be repaired once the damage is done. As it turns out, it can. "With more regular cuts and a hair mask, you can repair the strength of your hair gradually and recreate that salon look at home," says Birmingham.

"To combat damage and dryness I advise all my clients to use a weekly pre-shampoo deep-conditioning treatment and bond building treatment," adds Kingsley. "At Philip Kingsley these two products would be our Elasticizer, and Bond Builder Restructuring Treatment."

How to Stop Hair Breakage

Below are seven of the best ways to stop hair breakage, straight from the experts.

1. Minimise Heat and Use Heat Protectant

Too much heat styling can damage your hair, and although it would be better to avoid heat all together, we all know how hard this can be. So, if you do feel the need to heat style your hair, make sure you are using a heat protectant. "I'd advise regularly using a quality heat protection such as the TRESemmé Heat Defence Spray to ensure you are protecting your hair," says Birmingham.

2. Choose the Correct Shampoo for Your Hair

"You should always choose a shampoo that suits your hair texture [to minimise breakage]," says Kingsley. "I recommend our Moisture Balancing Shampoo, as it targets dry hair and delivers moisture where it is needed the most. 3. Use a Pre-Shampoo Treatment or Conditioning Mask

Another tip is to use a pre-shampoo treatment or mask. "The most important product to treat dry and damaged hair is our pre-shampoo treatment, Elasticizer," says Kingsley. "When treating dry and damaged hair, relying solely on conditioner is not enough. Hair elasticity is really important. However, when hair is dry and damaged it lacks stretchability, becoming brittle and snapping more easily under tension."

4. Brush Your Hair Properly

Kingsley says that using scratchy hair brushes, brushing hair too roughly and detangling wet hair from the top can all contribute to hair breakage. Instead, make sure to take care when brushing your hair and start detangling from the bottom and work your way up. Also, make sure you are using the correct hairbrush on both wet and dry hair.

5. Use Smarter Hair Tools

Something I've noticed since going on a hair health journey is that there are so many amazing tools out there that put your hair health first. As mentioned above, as much as I would like to avoid heat all together, I still like to style my hair now and again, so this year I'm going to invest in a handful of tools that help to minimise heat damage and protect my scalp.

6. Try a Silk Pillowcase

Something that I've personally found has made a huge difference on my hair health journey is a silk pillowcase. These pillowcases help to reduce friction on the hair while you move around in your sleep, in turn helping to reduce breakage too.

Who What Wear editor review: US beauty director Erin Jahns regularly uses Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector to keep her strands healthy. "It's been my saving grace ever since I started bleaching my hair, and I swear it's the reason I only lose about three strands when I carefully comb through it," she says. "That said, it's great for every hair texture and every level of damage. It's one of those products anyone with hair on their head needs in their arsenal."

11. JVN Nurture Intense Hydration Mask

Why we love it: Products that do a little bit of everything don't always do everything well, but this hair mask is an exception. It works to strengthen bonds, protect the hair shaft and boost moisture in one go. It immediately makes hair feel silky and soft, but used regularly (aim for weekly), it will help to improve hair health in the long term, too.

Who What Wear editor review: "I don't get tonnes of colour in my hair, just some light balayage once or twice a year, but I always notice a dramatic change in its texture when I do," says Day. "I like to use this mask in the run-up to and immediately following my colour appointment to keep it as healthy (and therefore as smooth and soft) as possible."

Why we love it: If your scalp is prone to oiliness, product buildup, or irritation, this mask is well worth adding to your routine. Unlike traditional hair masks that focus solely on nourishing the lengths, it works to rebalance the scalp while still leaving hair feeling soft and hydrated. It helps soothe discomfort, lift away lingering impurities, and restore freshness without stripping—making it particularly brilliant if your roots become greasy quickly.

Who What Wear editor review: "I've always found that when my scalp feels healthy, my hair looks better too, and this mask is one of the few treatments that genuinely seems to improve both," says Day. "I use it once a fortnight to stay on top of congestion, concentrating it on my scalp before working any excess through my lengths. How to Choose a Hair Mask

If you're struggling to choose the right hair mask, consider your main concern. Repairing damage? Reducing flyaways? Boosting moisture? Enhancing shine? Then look for a mask that will help with that specifically. "To address moisture depletion, a weekly treatment with a deep-conditioning mask is essential to add elasticity back to strands, giving them back their stretch, which gives resistance to breakage," says Anabel Kingsley, trichologist and brand president at Philip Kingsley. "For damage and split ends, use a bond-repair treatment to repair and strengthen broken bonds and give hair back its strength."

Keep an eye out for phrases like "bond-building" and "repairing", as these masks target split ends and damaged hair. If your scalp is more sensitive, you may want to avoid fragrances wherever possible.

What Ingredients Should You Look for in Hair Masks?

"Healthy hair growth is as much about what is happening on the inside as what you do on the outside," says Kingsley. "In terms of product formulation, you want to look for stimulating ingredients such as caffeine, and for breakage, look for formulas that contain nourishing, strengthening and hydrating ingredients.

"Our Elasticizer Deep-Conditioning Treatment contains hydrolysed elastin, a protein that penetrates your hair shaft and increases its elasticity without weighing [it] down to provide stretchability to the hair to provide strength and resistance against breakage," she adds. "This, along with nourishing olive and castor oil … makes hair look shiny and healthy."

Jojoba oil, marula oil and shea butter are other great hydrating ingredients to look out for.

What are hair bonds and how do they break?

"Hair bonds are the chemical interactions between protein chains in our hair fibers—essentially, they are what gives our hair its structure, strength, shine, and elasticity," explains Yates. "Hydrogen bonds are delicate and can get damaged simply when they are wet, ionic bonds can be damaged from a change in pH (which can also be caused by health / hormonal problems) and the strongest (disulphide) bonds, get damaged when exposed to chemical processing and excessive heat."

At the very core of these bonds is the polypeptide chain, which Yates refers to as the 'building blocks of hair'. It's these chains which the best bonding hair products will target in order to have a long-lasting impact upon hair health.

How do bonding hair products work?

"Bonding hair products work at the cortex of the hair to strengthen weakened bonds and restore hair strength and shine," says Yates. "They do this by mimicking the natural chemical bonds, however this also means that they can wash out and don’t always have long lasting results."

Yates adds that one of the most important things to consider when choosing bonding hair products is a formula that works by actually rebuilding the structure of the polypeptide chain. "This means the damage is reversed at the very most inner layer and is long lasting."

When should you use a bonding hair product?

According to Yates, everyone can benefit from using bonding hair products; even if you don’t colour or heat style your hair, because things like hard and chlorine-filled tap water can damage hair bonds.

"You should use bond repair products as a treatment, not as daily use, so you can just choose to use them when you feel like your hair needs some help," Yates himself uses and recommends K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask (£70). "You use the treatment products for 4-6 washes in a row to get your hair to a level of health you’re happy with, then reduce down to once a week, once every two weeks or however often you feel like your hair needs it, depending on the level of hair damage and what your hair is exposed to each day," he explains. "K18 also have a daily shampoo and conditioner for use in between treatments which help to prevent damage occuring in the first place."

How long do bonding hair products take to work?

"It really depends on the level of damage to your hair; you can see results after just one use with some products, but if you have very damaged hair, you might need consecutive uses before you start to see results," says Yates. "You can also visit your local salon for a treatment, as often the professional products are greater in strength and can work faster. On my clients I do the K18 Repair Service that uses their professional-only hair mist, but there are lots of brands and options to choose from so I’d recommend asking your stylist."

Who What Wear UK Next in Beauty Awards 2024: Best Hair Products 

Shampoo is the foundation of a good hair day, and it can make or break the rest of your hairstyling routine. However, Alfaparf Milano's Detoxifying Low Shampoo won over our judges, who now can't live without it in their bathrooms. The detoxifying formula gently removes build-up at the roots, leaving hair bouncy and glossy through the lengths.

"The product is one of very few shampoos that make a difference. My hair feels lightweight and instantly cleaner, and looks much thicker and glossier," says makeup artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis.

Our judges also loved how well it removed product build-up to leave their roots feeling super clean, which even extended the amount of time they could go without shampooing again. "Unlike other detoxifying shampoos, this formula doesn’t strip the hair but it does make it feel incredibly soft after use," says deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger. "My hair is less greasy and I definitely get an extra day out of it compared to my regular shampoo. My friends told me how shiny my hair looked, and the only difference I had made was using this shampoo, so that speaks for itself," she says.

Hello Klean's efficacious formula impressed our judges, who highlighted how well this helped counteract the effects of hard water on their hair. It's the brand's specialism, and its innovative formulas are often found in beauty editors' showers to help prevent hair colour from fading, reduce scalp irritation and ensure hair looks shinier and healthier. It comes in two versions: one for light and one for dark hair colours, to leave lengths looking and feeling their best.

"I really love this product," says freelance beauty journalist Laura Pearson. "After just one use, my hair felt so much cleaner and softer compared to other products. It felt so deeply cleansed like I’d washed it twice, but I hadn’t. After using it for multiple weeks, my hair was lasting longer between washes as if it had been properly 'detoxed' from any excess product," she says.

It also impressed our managing editor Poppy Nash. "I have hard water and noticed when I first moved into my house that my hair was suffering. I have long but thin hair and it felt weighed down and flat. Since using this, my hair feels healthier and more nourished," she says. "I noticed less breakage and it feels softer and more lightweight. Before, my scalp felt a touch greasy and even flaky, but this has sorted me right out!"

Our judges' favourite conscious hair product was Hairstory's New Wash, which came out head and shoulders above its competitors. This non-conventional shampoo features a cream formula that cleanses roots whilst leaving ends hydrated. Its ability to leave our judges' lengths looking lustrous and cleansed—as well as its sulphate and phthalate-free formula that is also biodegradable (making it kind to sensitive scalps and the planet)—made it our top pick for our conscious hair product category. We also love that it comes in three varieties depending on the dryness or oiliness of your hair.

"I love that it's shampoo and conditioner in one," says facialist, manicurist and tanning expert Emily Rose Lansley. "I like my shampoo to foam to feel clean and this doesn't, but my hair looks nice and shiny—I even have volume, which is great for my fine hair," she says.

Those with curls need a curl product that can create hold without the dreaded crunch. It's a tall order, but Camille Rose has delivered. Ideal for wash-and-go styles, this curling jelly leaves your curl pattern defined, hydrated and bouncy, thanks to nourishing coconut and pomegranate oils, aloe vera, vitamin E and B12. Our judges loved how it left their curls soft, with definition lasting beyond the first day.

"It’s one of the few styling gels I’ve used that holds my hair without making it crunchy—I love the results," says beauty content creator Lesley Buckle. "My curls feel really soft and the definition actually lasts beyond day one, which is rare for me." Who What Wear UK's endorsement sales director Efi Mandrides agrees. "This product defines and tames my curly hair very well and smells lovely too—I would definitely recommend it," she says.

Sam McKnight is one of the industry's most esteemed hairstylists, so it's unsurprising that our judges adored the Cool Curls Refresh & Revive Mist, which does exactly what it says on the bottle. From refreshing curls in between hair washes to leaving curls and coils perfectly defined, our judges loved how versatile this lightweight yet hydrating mist is—not forgetting the incredible scent that it left in their curls.

"I absolutely loved this mist," says makeup artist and journalist Rose Gallagher. "I’m still learning my curly habits, and one thing that hugely impacts my ability to follow recommendations is that so many formulas are too rich for thin hair like mine," she says. "This mist worked perfectly to reduce frizz without weighing down my thin hair. I also really love the chic packaging."

It also impressed our social media editor, Megan Storey. "I’m so happy to have found this product! I love using it on day three hair to revive my waves and tame the frizz," she says. "My hair doesn’t feel heavy with product afterwards and it certainly looks 'refreshed and revived'. Bonus points for the cool packaging and gorgeous scent."

It's no secret that there are hundreds of hair serums out there. But Authentic Beauty Concept's Glow Spray Serum stood out as our judges' favourite amongst the several we tested this year. From the does-it-all formula with heat and colour protection to the chic pink glass bottle that instantly elevates a bathroom counter (not forgetting the luxurious scent), there was nothing our judges didn't love about this hero hair serum. Each reported how healthy and shiny this serum left their lengths.

"I really like this product, from the aesthetically pleasing pink glass bottle to the lovely relaxing scent that makes it so enjoyable to use," says Pearson. "The mist is a light lotion that feels so nice, but what’s best about this product is that it combines heat protection, colour maintenance, hair strengthening and environmental protection so effectively. An amazing multi-tasker!" she says.

It also caught the attention of junior beauty editor, Grace Lindsay. "I colour my hair a lot and haven’t come across anything like this before. Not only is the packaging cute, but this spray really enhanced my highlights and left my hair with salon-worthy shine," she says. "A big plus is that it also doubles as a heat protector. I could see myself buying this again thanks to the results."

Regular hair treatments hold the power to supercharge your haircare routine, and Alterna's Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Masque did just that, scoring 10s across the board. This leave-in mask features bond-repair technology to rebuild broken bonds in strands, leaving all hair textures looking and feeling healthier and stronger. The leave-in formula seamlessly complements a hair-wash routine, without the need to rinse it out like traditional hair masks.

"I would recommend this to help with breakage, as my hair definitely felt stronger after use," says makeup artist Michelle Leandra. "The texture is a smooth cream and only a small amount is needed. I also like that it has heat-protection properties," she says.

It also impressed our beauty editor, Eleanor Vousden. "This made an incredible difference to my hair! "The leave-in treatment doesn’t weigh hair down, but I both see and feel a difference in the health of my hair. Gisou's hair oil has the ability to make any beauty editor's heart race, but it particularly blew away our expert judges, who loved this hair oil's versatility as a styling product to nourish all hair types and textures. Featuring honey as its star ingredient, it adds hydration and a glossy shine to lengths, all whilst offering heat protection as well as effortlessly smoothing flyaways on dry hair. The indulgent scent won it extra points.

"I really enjoyed this oil—it made my hair feel really nice and left me with a nice shine after styling," says hairstylist Dionne Smith. "You can also use it as a scalp treatment cocktailed with a conditioner," she says. It was also a hit with Lindsay. "I loved this hair oil! The packaging is so nice, it smells incredible and it made my hair so soft and shiny. I am a big fan of the brand and this didn’t disappoint," she says.

Cantu's Protective Styles Hair Freshener is our very deserving winner in this category. It can be used on braids, wigs, locs and weaves to instantly refresh and soothe the scalp. It makes it quick and easy to extend the life of protective styles without a deep shampoo—a quick spritz is all you need.

"What I like about this product is that it does what it says on the tin. It's a great way to quickly refresh the hair," says Smith. "It smells nice, feels weightless and really does remove odours, leaving the hair feeling fresh again."

It also got the stamp of approval from our fashion editor, Remy Farrell. "Finally, a product for protective styles that refreshes hair without having to start from scratch with a deep wash! After fluffing up my braids by trying to intermittently tackle build-up with clarifying shampoo and scalp treatments, this manages to let my scalp breathe and adds freshness in just five minutes— ideal for hair textures that dry shampoo doesn't serve," she says. "It's light, has a mousse-y texture, a lovely fragrance and gives impressive long-term results."

Cloud Nine's hair tools are highly regarded amongst the industry's top hairstylists, and The Airshot Hair Dryer particularly blew our judges away—no pun intended. The anti-static tech features negative ions to ensure a polished result, and the mineral heating element inside the hair dryer helps to prevent moisture loss each time you dry your hair. This is a total game-changer that makes the chore of blow-drying your hair a treat.

"This hair dryer really impressed me. It’s sleek, modern and features amazing technology," says Lindsay. "I love that it comes with a diffuser for curly hair, and the self-clean mode is a big plus. It is easy to use and switch between different heat settings, drying my hair in no time," she says.

There are now several hair multi-stylers out there to choose from. But out of every styling tool we tried, Shark's Flexstyle came out on top amongst our hard-to-please judges. Our testers applauded the range of attachments that work across hair textures and made styling super quick and easy. With the option to create bouncy blowouts, super-sleek, polished looks and dry your hair; this is one hard-working hot tool you won't regret adding to your routine.

"I absolutely loved this," says Lindsay. "These attachments worked a lot better on my thick, naturally wavy hair. It comes with different heat and speed settings and a cool-shot feature to lock your style in place. I also found that lightweight and easy to use," she says. "It is still quite an investment, but one I would happily make myself."

For affiliates manager Jerrylyn Saguiped, it was all about how quick and easy it made styling her long, thick hair. "Long gone are the days of achy arms from holding up a curling wand or hair dryer, as the Shark FlexStyle makes it incredibly quick and easy to style your hair," she says. "It has become my go-to hair tool, and I give it extra points for having a range of different attachments that are suited to all hair types." Bravo, Shark.

We had to award a highly commended accolade to GHD's Duet Blowdry Hair Dryer Brush, which also impressed our panel as one of the best hot brush launches of 2024. It creates a bouncy blowout that genuinely looks like you've come straight from the salon. The large, round brush captures a lot of hair (making it great for those with very thick or long locks) and provides great tension as it twists through the lengths to leave you with tonnes of volume at the roots, bounce through the ends and a smooth, shiny gloss. The fact it takes hair from wet to dry was also appreciated by our testers.

"This is an amazing hot brush, which really does give a blowdry finish without the need for a hair dryer and a round brush. It easily streamlines the process from wet to styled," says Vousden. "The brush head captures a lot of hair— which is great for someone like me with both long and thick hair—and gives a volumised bounce at the roots through to the lengths with a salon-worthy shine. It left my hair really smooth and also took no time at all to dry."

The hot brush also got a thumbs-up from hairstylist James Lear, who used the tool on his clients. "I loved how smooth this tool made the hair from wet, and how close it got to the root, allowing you to create real volume," he says. "Even on frizzy hair, the results from wet were quite surprising to me! You can get a really good grip and hold, which allows you to create a blowdried look."

In our opinion, Manta's hair brush stands out from its competitors. The flexible design fits effortlessly in the palm of your hand and glides through the hair as gently as if you were combing your fingers through. It was designed for the founder's wife who lost her hair after illness. When she saw regrowth, she wanted a brush that would detangle very gently. It's certainly high up on the list of my haircare agenda, especially after recently adding colour to my hair for the first time in years. I'm also guilty of using my hairdryer and heat styling tools on a weekly basis, and am well aware that colouring and heat styling hair are two of the biggest contributors towards hair damage... Damage that results in hair breaking easily, being difficult to style, and looking dull, fluffy, and frizzy. Not ideal.

Of course, there are plenty of shine-boosting sprays and serums out there that can help you to to cheat glossy hair in a matter of seconds. But if you're wondering how to make hair look glossy all of the time, it requires more than just one product. Don't worry though, achieving glossy hair doesn't have to be complicated—turns out, it's all about using the right products in the right order.

Below, haircare experts Michael Shaun Corby (salon and haircare global education ambassador at Amika) and Casey Voss (curly hair educator and Innersense Artist) gave me all of their top tricks and tips for achieving glossy hair at every point in your haircare routine, from prep to finish.

1. Build a haircare routine

"When styling, it’s essential to treat your hair with the same care and precision you give to your skincare or makeup routine," says Corby. "Start with a scalp care treatment, hydrating mask, or smoothing treatment to eliminate unwanted frizz and create a sleek base then use a strengthening shampoo and a shine-boosting conditioner to ensure your hair is well-prepped for heat styling."

When it comes to styling, Corby recommends using a foundation product (such as a mousse, cream, or serum to smooth and protect your hair. "The final step is applying a topcoat product to lock in shine," he adds. "For finer or thinner hair types, I recommend using a serum, followed by a lightweight finishing spray to seal in the look."

2. Use build-up removing products

Just as a deep cleanse is an essential component to a skincare routine built to achieve shiny, smooth skin, the same principle applies within hair. "My favourite wash day hair care routine for creating glossy, shiny hair always starts with a detoxifying hair mask. A lot of times, buildup is what creates dullness on the surface of our hair," explains Voss. "Just like skin needs hydration to glow, our hair also requires moisture to shine. By removing buildup, a detoxifying mask allows hair to better take in hydration."

3. Increase hydration

"Achieving glossy hair is all about identifying and addressing your hair's specific needs, so for those dealing with dryness, your hair may not immediately benefit from glossing products," explains Corby. "It’s essential to first restore moisture and strength. Using deeply hydrating treatments can triple moisture levels and fortify the hair, creating a stronger base for achieving gloss."

4. Reduce heat

Since shiny hair is an indicator of healthy hair, it's far better to focus on ensuring hair is healthy and hydrated (and therefore naturally glossy), than just masking dullness with a finishing product. According to Corby, ensuring your hair isn't exposed to high or unnecessary temperatures is one of the number one things to keep in mind.

"Higher heat settings can cause unnecessary damage, so instead, use a heat protectant and lower the temperature, making multiple passes with the tool as needed," he explains. "Adjust the heat based on your hair texture, thickness, and density—the finer the hair, the lower the heat should be."

"One of the biggest mistakes people make is styling hair that isn’t completely dry," he adds. "Any residual moisture can cause frizz, dullness, and an uneven blowout, so always make sure your hair is fully dry before applying heat. Once you think it’s dry, take a moment to feel the hair as it cools. If any part feels cold, there’s still water present, which can lead to damage during heat styling."

When it comes to haircare, we have so many product options at our fingertips—not just shampoo and conditioner but reparative hair masks, growth-boosting serums, nourishing oils, and scalp treatments. Indeed, it's now possible to have a haircare routine to rival your skincare regime, with multiple steps to help target concerns ranging from dry ends to an oily scalp.

However, of course, sometimes simple really is best. If you prefer a low maintenance haircare routine, then it's understandable that aside from your shampoo and conditioner you may only want just one other product.

Personally, I love (and dare I say need) a multi-step haircare routine but if I was to strip things back, a hair oil would be an absolutely non-negotiable for me. Since they can be used in multiple ways—as an overnight mask, as a leave-in split ends treatment, or even as a frizz-smoothing, shine-boosting styling product—they have multiple benefits.

The likes of argan oil and rosemary oil have proven particularly popular in recent years, and can now be found within some of the bestselling haircare products on the market. However, searches are on the rise for batana oil, a lesser known (but still super effective) plant-derived oil. To learn more, I spoke to dermatologist Sonia Khorana for her verdict on this buzzy ingredient.

What is batana oil?

First things first, what exactly is batana oil? "It's an oil extracted from the American palm tree that is native to Central and South America," says Khorana. "It can be used to hydrate and moisturise the scalp."

What are the benefits of batana oil?

"Batana oil is often used for hair and skin," explains Khorana. "It has a smoky, tobacco-like, earthy scent, but that tends to go away once you rub it in and it doesn’t linger."

Like other plant-derived oils, batana oil is full of nutrients which can help to moisturise your hair and skin. "It’s rich in fatty acids like oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, and stearic acid, which all help to moisturise the hair and scalp to increase shine and strength," she adds.

Can batana oil help hair to grow?

There are currently no studies on batana oil for hair health or hair growth, and according to Khorana you'll need more than just a simple oil to do the trick. However, if you're after an oil to help soften and nourish your hair, and support a healthy scalp, it's a great option. "Batana oil contains carotenoids, particularly alpha and beta carotenes, which are beneficial for scalp health but cannot actually regrow your hair," she says.

Are there any side effects to using batana oil?

According to Khorana, batana oil is suitable for all hair types and textures, so there's no need to be concerned about any unusual side effects. "As with any oil, the only risk is potentially weighing down your hair, but you can’t really overuse it," she explains. "Batana oil might be a bit too rich for some fine hair types however, and individuals with nut allergies should exercise caution when using batana oil."

Alternatives to batana oil:

Batana oil is rarely used as an ingredient within formulations and isn't easy to source on its own. For similarly nourishing, shine-boosting benefits, Khorana recommends looking for hair products that contain ingredients like argan oil, castor oil, rosemary oil, and pumpkin seed oil. If you're specifically after an ingredient with hair growth benefits, she advises speaking to your GP about minoxidil, an ingredient with proven abilities as a hair loss treatment.

How We Chose the Best Heat Protectant Sprays

Between myself and the wider Who What Wear UK team, we've tested countless heat protectant sprays. From more affordable formulations to salon-standard brands, we tested a range of heat protectant sprays at different price points and for different hair types, rating them on how well they protected our hair by evaluating how conditioned, smooth and healthy our hair felt after heat styling.

What Do Heat Protectant Sprays Do?

Cobella equates not using heat protectant on your hair to skipping your daily application of SPF on your skin. “The best heat protectant sprays create a barrier on your hair shaft, reducing heat damage from styling tools by preventing excessive moisture loss and structural changes in the hair proteins,” Cobella explains. “Using one can drastically reduce the temperature and the damage that the surface of your hair is exposed to, hence increasing the chances of healthier hair.”

How to Use a Heat Protectant Spray

Basically, whenever your hair is going to be exposed to heat, you should be using a heat protectant spray. “To apply heat protector, your hair can be towel-dried or damp, but not soaking wet, as this will dilute the product too much,” explains Cobella. “Plus, water conducts heat, so try to thoroughly towel-dry your hair before applying any heat protectant products.” Be generous with the application too—if you have particularly thick hai,r then you might want to section it off and spray the heat protectant through in layers to ensure you’re coating all of your strands.

What to Look for in a Heat Protectant Spray

There are so many heat protectant products on the market, but Cobella personally recommends looking for formulas that are free from parabens, sulphates and alcohol, which can be drying. Alongside heat protectant sprays, which “guard against damage caused by styling tools like blow dryers and straighteners,” there are also UV protection sprays, which can shield hair from ultraviolet rays from the sun. “These can prevent colour fading, dryness and brittleness, and it’s possible to find some products that do both,” Cobella explains. “However, it is a different technology, so you should especially look for UV protection on the label for this, not just heat protection.”

I have always had extremely dry hair. In fact, for years, no matter how many masks I applied or how often I would get it trimmed, my hair’s natural texture would remain slightly frazzled and always parched. As an esthetician, I see first hand the dramatic change that happens in my clients' skin from the start of November. The impact of winter upon skin doesn't always manifest in the obvious ways—dry and flaky skin. "if your hair care has stopped working, your hair needs may well have changed," says hair stylist, Sam McKnight. "In winter, hair needs more moisture and your focus will be on fighting frizz." Hair that feels dry, coarse, and brittle, and a dry, flaky scalp are all signs that you may need to switch up your haircare routine.

""If hair is fragile or brittle, or you want to prevent frizz, avoid rubbing the hair—when it’s wet, it’s at its most fragile so always towel dry gently," McKnight advises. "Squeeze hair lightly with a towel, as close to the head as possible, and move down towards the ends. Then, detangle with a wide tooth comb or detangling brush with flexible wide teeth. And finally, bear in mind that changes in clothing – coats, jumpers, scarves and hats – cause friction and can lead to frizz.”

Struggling with damaged hair? You're not alone. In fact, my hair and I have been on quite a journey over the last year, but it's safe to say that we are in a much better place now. Let me give you a little backstory. I have always been blessed with thick, healthy hair, and when I was younger, it seemed that no matter what I did, the condition of my hair didn't change. If you're wondering how they do this, it's all about the material. Stewart explains that silk reduces friction on the surface of your skin and hair that can be caused by cotton pillowcases. This friction can stretch and tug the skin and cause hair tangling, but sleeping on silk will reduce this. Not only that, but cotton pillowcases can absorb more of your nighttime skincare and hair products, meaning they aren't working as hard as they should. Again, by sleeping on silk, your moisturisers and hair oils should stay exactly where you want them.

What to Look For in a Silk Pillowcase

"Not all silk pillowcases are created equal," explains Stewart. "Watch out for toxic dyes and false claims of momme, which refers to the silk weight and thickness." Once you've found a good one, it's important to take care of it the right way. Stewart recommends handwashing and dry-cleaning only. However, some brands are machine washable on certain settings, so make sure to read the label. 

Stewart also recommends using a pH-neutral liquid detergent and/or fabric softener. "Silk is a natural fibre, and washing in a solution that’s too acidic or alkaline can cause it to harden in a single wash. If you can't find a detergent that specifies pH level then just go for one that specifies silk," she advises.

I'll be the first to admit that I've always been blessed with a lot of hair. Growing up, I found it hard to deal with my thick, curly ends, but as I got older and learnt how to properly care for and style my hair, I quickly came to appreciate its natural texture. That being said, after many teenage years spent bleaching and straightening my locks, they are definitely not as healthy as they once were. In fact, lately I've found it hard to grow my hair past a certain length, and I've found that my ends are looking really dry and my roots are not feeling as strong and thick as they used to. 

Here at Who What Wear UK, I had noticed a lot of readers opting for the Grow Gorgeous hair mask to help with their hair struggles, so I was intrigued to see what all the fuss was about, and whether it could help with my specific concerns. After doing some research, I learnt that the mask is designed to tackle thin, flat and weak strands, and help make your hair appear thicker.

The product itself is enriched with caffeine, biotin and niacinamide. These clever ingredients help to stimulate the roots, while shea butter and coconut oil condition the ends. It also contains keratin to improve strength, and pea peptides to help with body and volume. 

Although my hair looks thick, it has become a lot dryer and more damaged, and I am struggling to regain the thickness and length that it had before bleaching. 

However, what really intrigued me about this mask is that it isn't just designed to be applied on the ends of your hair, but your roots too. I won't lie, at first the thought of putting a thick hair mask on my roots kind of scared me, and had me worrying that it would leave my hair feeling and looking greasy. Grow Gorgeous Hair Mask Review

On first look, I really liked the hair mask's packaging. It wasn't too chunky which makes it a little easier to travel with, but it looked chic in my bathroom thanks to the gold and brown tones. The mask itself had quite a thick, butter-like texture, and smelt really luxurious and fresh. All in all, we were off to a good start. 

When it came to using the mask, I made sure to follow the exact instructions on the tub. The brand said to apply the mask to damp hair after shampooing, and massage the product onto your scalp before smoothing it through the lengths. Then, leave it for ten minutes before rinsing it out. The ten minute bit through me off a bit, as I usually leave my masks in for around 2-3 mins, but seeing as I'd only be using it once or twice a week, I didn't mind leaving it in for a bit longer.

Once I'd rinsed it out, I went to blowdry my hair straight away as I was so intrigued to see if my scalp would be greasy. To my amazement, my roots were silky soft, and there was no product residue in sight. In fact, all of my hair felt super soft, and I noticed it was a lot smoother and shinier when blow drying. 

In terms of thickness, I definitely felt like my hair looked more full, but I think I would need to use it for a while to start to see actual differences in the thickness and length. That being said, if I'm this impressed after one go, then I'm really excited to see the long-term results.

My one bit of advice when using this mask is to not apply too much to the hair. Because it is a little thicker in texture, I do think that it could weigh thin or fine hair types down if you apply too much. However, apart from that, I highly recommend giving it a go. Also, for just £25 you get a lot of product, and the fact that you only have to use a little bit means that it should last you a long time.
