I consider myself someone who is pretty low-maintenance with their hair. I don't like spending ages with a hair tool when styling my lengths, and so I'm always drawn to low-effort hairstyles that not only look effortless, but are also effortless to create, too. And if you're like me and the rest of the internet, you too have been swooning over Zendaya's The Odyssey press tour hair moments, which have been featuring some stunning Grecian-inspired waves that I've been desperate to re-create. And as we're in the height of summer, now is the perfect time to try "S" waves. I spoke with a top hairstylist to break down exactly how to achieve this low-effort style for summer.

How to Do S Waves

"S waves are a looser, more luxe take on the classic mermaid waves and the perfect style for summer," says hairstylist and GHD ambassador Patrick Wilson. "It tells the story of an 'I just got out of the sea' glossy look that looks effortless and summery. The style is all about having luxuriously deep waves with a shaken-out finish for an uber fresh, cool look," he says. "It is all about creating a subtle, wavy texture rather than curl. This is a flatter wave that doesn't have the volume or width of a traditional curly blow-dry, making it ideal for a more modern, sleek look. It’s a great look that can be created on all hair lengths."

What You'll Need

To create your S waves, you'll need a good heat protector, a pair of hair straighteners, a wide-toothed comb and a texturising spray or salt spray.

1. Prep Hair

You'll want to start on straight, dry hair and use a good heat protector before styling your hair to shield your lengths from heat damage.

2. The Technique

Wilson tells me that you can use a triple waver; however, a hair straightener can achieve the same look and gives you more control over the wave. "Personally, I like to use the GHD Chronos Hair Straightener (£299) to add bends and kinks in the hair using an S-bend motion," he says.

"Place the straightener at your eye level and move the styler down an inch and flip it in the opposite direction, creating an 'S' shape in the hair," says Wilson. "When starting the bends and waves in your hair, don’t start too high or into your parting; otherwise, this creates too much height at the root and looks more done than it needs to," he says.

3. Wave Hair

Then, repeat the motion throughout the rest of your hair. "Continue this motion back and forth, leaving the ends straight for a more undone finish," says Wilson. You can experiment with the size of each section you're waving. I find larger sections will give a softer effect, whereas smaller sections give a more piecey texture, which works well on face-framing layers.

4. Brush Out

Next, you can dishevel the waves with a wide-toothed comb to make them look even more effortless. "Let the hair cool and set before brushing out; otherwise, the style won't stay," says Wilson.

5. Add Product

"Finish with a spritz of hairspray and follow with Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Texture Mist for a ‘done’ yet ever so slightly dishevelled, effortless look," says Wilson.

6. The Result

And there you have your S waves. For second-day hair, Wilson recommends misting through a salt spray, which is the perfect product to revive the waves and add grit and texture.

As someone old enough to have dipped my toe into Y2K beauty trends the first time around, I've got a soft spot for the pastel streaks, chunky highlights and dip-dyed ends that defined the era. After watching '90s fashion, noughties beauty and even our favourite TV shows make a comeback, it was only a matter of time before the hair colour trends followed. From ribbon highlights to candy-coloured pastels, the nostalgic looks I once begged my hairdresser for are back—and this time, they're chicer than ever.

Colourist Harriet Muldoon at Larry King South Kensington agrees. "At the beginning of the year we [witnessed a big] 2016 throwback, and I think it began to tease us with the nostalgia of pastel hair," she tells me.

Alongside flip phones and frosted lip gloss, the Y2K era was all about exaggeration and making iconic moves. "For colour, this was a really major period. The use of vivid colours and unique section patterns made it so exciting to be a colourist," adds Muldoon. Recalling the signature shades, she says, 'For technique, we were looking at chunky highlights, strong section patterns and the beginning of the dip dye, and it ranged from vivid colours to pastels."

Thinking of giving it a go? Muldoon agrees. "It's a great time of year to go for these shades as they really stand out in the summer. If you're unsure about what's right for you, speak to your colourist, get a moodboard together and have some fun. You can always go for just the tips if you just want to dip into it," she adds.

Below, we spoke to stylists and ambassadors for L’Oreal Professionnel and Colour Trophy, Adam Read and George Curran, on how the trends have come back around and how to wear them for 2026.

1. Pastel Pink

As Muldoon tells me, pastels were a huge Y2K trend, and bringing the colour palette back only weeks ago was none other than Kylie Jenner. Famed for her bold hair colour choices, we love this soft pastel take on long locks, proving the nostalgic trend is making a stylish comeback for a new generation.

2. Velvet Brunette

Rich, glossy brunette was a defining look of the Y2K era, worn by stars like Anne Hathaway, Katie Holmes and Eva Longoria, whose deep chocolate shades became synonymous with glossy, healthy hair.

Today's take moves away from flat, single-process colour in favour of a more nuanced finish. "Brunette is becoming richer and more dimensional. Rather than flat, solid colour, we’re seeing luxurious depth with multiple tonal reflections," reveals Reed.

It's a trend, Reed believes, that is "best suited to natural brunettes wanting richness without dramatically changing their colour, or blondes looking to return to darker hair in a softer, more sophisticated way." He adds that this isn't about dialling down the colour. "The most luxurious brunette isn’t the darkest; it’s the one with the most dimension. When light moves through the colour, the hair comes alive."

3. Lived-In Grey

Sonic silver blonde hair was a big late '90s, early '00s trend, but as Reed puts it, "We’re seeing a real shift in the way people think about grey hair. Rather than feeling the need to cover every silver strand, clients are embracing their natural colour and asking how they can make it look intentional, healthy and beautifully lived in."

This isn’t about letting grey simply grow out. It’s about working with it. "Through thoughtful colour placement, glossing and soft blending, natural silver becomes part of the overall colour story, adding depth, light and dimension," adds Reed.

4. Cowboy Copper

The copper of Y2K yore has evolved from a bold fashion statement into something much more wearable. Instead of bright orange reds, velvet copper combines cinnamon, chestnut and soft auburn tones to create richness and sophistication. "Clients still love warmth, but they want elegance over intensity. Cowboy copper feels luxurious because it's soft, multi-dimensional and catches the light beautifully," reveals Curran.

It's best suited to fair through medium skin tones wanting warmth without dramatic commitment. "Think Sadie Sink, Emma Stone and Kelly Reilly," he adds.

5. Gold Rush

Golden blonde ruled the early 2000s, with glossy, sun-kissed shades becoming the signature look of stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Cat Deeley and Sienna Miller. But unlike the brassy, high-maintenance blondes of the era, today's revival is softer and richer. "This isn’t the gold of the early 2000s. Think refined honey, soft caramel, buttercream blondes and beautifully balanced golden ribbons that reflect light naturally," reveals Curran.

As for who it's best suited to? "Anyone wanting to add warmth and brightness to their complexion. It’s particularly flattering on mature skin as it restores softness and luminosity," he says.

6. Skin Tone Hair

Think back to the glossy, expensive-looking hair colours that defined the early 2000s. Jennifer Aniston's honey blonde, Jessica Alba's caramel brunette and Eva Longoria's glossy chocolate brown all had one thing in common: they were chosen to enhance each woman's natural colouring rather than overpower it. Whilst today's version is far more bespoke, the inspiration remains the same. "The perfect hair colour is one that doesn’t feel like it’s been done. It simply looks like the best version of you," says Reed.

As for what makes it modern this time around? "Colour is selected to complement skin tone, undertone, eye colour, natural hair colour and even wardrobe palette, making every result completely bespoke," adds Reed.

The good news is that everyone can get in on this trend. "The beauty of 'skin tone hair' is that it isn’t one colour; it’s an approach. By taking into account the individual rather than following trends, the result always feels authentic," adds Reed.

Heritage blonde is inspired by iconic techniques from previous decades but blended seamlessly with modern colour placement, softer root transitions and luminous glossing. "It's best suited to existing blonde clients looking for an update rather than a complete transformation," reveals Curran. Think Gigi Hadid, Margot Robbie and Sienna Miller.

High-contrast highlights are making a major comeback, reviving the bold, statement colour that defined the Y2K era. Instead of ultra-blended balayage, the focus is shifting back to brighter, more defined ribbons of blonde that create instant dimension and frame the face. The trend has recently been spotted on Megan Thee Stallion during her Fiji getaway, proving that bold, high-impact colour is firmly back on the agenda.

The shift is evident in the haircuts that people are asking for in salons right now too. Forget blunt bobs and coiffed pixie cuts; it’s styles with fluidity—think waterfall layers, lazy bobs and pared-back shags—that are proving popular. And it’s this shift that has put brushed-out curls firmly on the agenda.

What Are Brushed-Out Curls?

Rather than perfectly sculpted curls or immaculate mermaid waves, brushed-out curls have an airy, almost cloud-like texture that manages to feel both relaxed and effortlessly elegant. “I’d describe this look as soft, brushed-out glamour with a modern feel,” explains STIL Salon Style Director, Neale Rodger. “The curls are there, but they’re not the main event—it’s more about the movement, volume and silhouette they create once they’re brushed out. I would say there’s definitely a nod to old Hollywood hair, but it also feels very current.”

Rodger points to Olivia Dean’s voluminous, bouncy curls that she wore recently on her The Art of Loving tour as the epitome of this trend. “Dean wears brushed-out curls beautifully because it never looks too polished or overly done,” he says. “It sits somewhere between natural texture and glamour, which is exactly where a lot of hair trends are heading right now.”

Part of the appeal of brushed-out curls is certainly their versatility. The softly diffused finish works just as well with a T-shirt and jeans as it would a wedding guest dress, making it a versatile option for everyday styling and a special occasion ‘do. But does the trend work for every hair type? Rodger certainly thinks so, but you need to tailor how you approach the styling depending on whether you have textured or naturally straight hair.

“For textured hair, I’d focus on enhancing what’s already there rather than fighting against it,” Rodger explains. “Using a diffuser, some curl-defining products and gently brushing out once the hair has completely cooled can create a really beautiful version of the look, while still maintaining the hair’s natural character.”

“However, for naturally straight hair, you will need to build the shape first,” Rodger says. “I’d use a large barrel tong or rollers to create soft curls throughout the hair and then leave them to cool completely before brushing through.”

The biggest mistake that people make when attempting the brushed-out curl trend, according to Rodger? “Stopping when the curls look perfect. Don’t be afraid to brush the curls out,” he says. “Most people spend ages creating curls only to leave them exactly as they are. The magic actually happens once you brush them out and let everything blend together into one soft shape, giving that effortless, expensive-looking finish that everyone’s obsessed with right now.”

Whilst this is true, spring saw mid-length and long hairstyles make a return, but for summer, it's all about the balayage bob. Combining one of the most popular hair colour techniques with this season's short hairstyle of choice, the balayage bob is a timeless look that still feels bang on trend.

I first spotted this trend on some of my favourite celebs, including Emma Stone and Penélope Cruz. However, a quick look at Instagram told me that the most stylish people were already one step ahead, with lots of fashionable creators sporting a balayage bob, too.

To me, braids are synonymous with the summer season. Not only is this hairstyle a foolproof way to look polished with minimal effort throughout the warmer months, but it’s also a great opportunity to give my hair a break from the silk presses, blowouts, and extensions I often opt for throughout autumn and winter.

Rather than starting with a large amount of braiding extensions, the hairstylist will gradually add hair to each braid, creating a more natural appearance while reducing tension at the hairline and on the scalp. This limits the amount of stress applied to delicate edges and, therefore, lowers the risk of breakage. But the best part? This style is versatile and can be worn in many patterns while still protecting your natural hair underneath.

3. Boho Braids

By twisting the hair rather than braiding it, this hairstyle reduces the tension on the scalp, minimising breakage and split ends. Miles Davis once said, "Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself." I think the same is true of appearance; sometimes it takes a long time to look like yourself, too. For me, it started with a dramatic haircut at the age of 16. Previously, my dark blonde, wavy hair fell long past my waist. At that time, I was deep into a fierce obsession with the 1970s, and I genuinely believed my long, beachy hair was paying homage to Iggy Pop, or perhaps, on a good day, Stevie Nicks. My wardrobe reflected this fantasy too; I had become especially enthralled by a pair of gold leather Fiorucci trousers. Suffice to say, if the outfit didn't look like an ageing rockstar, I didn't want it.

But by the time I turned 16, my relationship with my hair began to change. I was studying, and my world was expanding. I was submerged in philosophy, English literature and film. I was discovering the things that would shape the intricacies of who I am: books, clothes, ideas and the people I admired. I was becoming the sort of person I am today: someone who would rather elicit a laugh than a compliment on my appearance.

The women I admired seemed to possess a different kind of beauty. I adored the crispness of a perfectly cut suit; seeing women wear Bella Freud tailoring made my heart sing. There was something about what it projected, perhaps the professionalism and seniority it represents. The appeal wasn't separate from their minds, nor was their identity centred on appearance alone. Increasingly, I felt my long hair didn't represent any of that. By that point, I wasn't so much concerned with following conventional ideas of what was "pretty", or, as my dad liked to remind me, "fanciable". He was convinced boys preferred girls with long hair. I only cared about being chic.

The turning point was when my love affair with French culture started to bubble. I was obsessed with French films, music, men—and dare I say, cheese. Then I watched Amélie (2001). The moment I saw Audrey Tautou, that was it; I was sold on the idea of cutting my hair into a bob. If I could get close to Amélie, or at the very least, Margo in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), I would be happy. Like most decisions I make, I was decisive. I booked an appointment and cut all my hair off. As the lengths fell around me in the hairdresser's chair, everything felt strangely right. I remember vividly how different it felt to lie in bed that night without my hair spilling across the pillow, and how strange it was to run my hands through it in the shower the next morning. But from that day forward, I knew I would never grow it long again—I was me.

Now that I’m older, it's striking to think just how monumental that haircut was. What I realise now is that I wasn't rejecting femininity; I was trying to invent a different version of it to become the woman I wanted to be. The bob felt deliberate. Long hair, in contrast, felt conventional and, to me, carried associations I didn't particularly want, to a version of womanhood that prioritised softness or prettiness. Of course, hair doesn't determine personality, but the bob seemed to suggest the alternative.

Hair historian Rachael Gibson explains, "Through most of history, white women in Western countries have been associated with long hair. It's inextricably linked to long-held ideas of femininity and beauty standards, so anything that challenges it remains connected with ideas of strength, freedom and modernity." Perhaps that's why the haircut felt so significant.

Of course, these meanings aren't universal. Gibson stresses that the symbolism of hair changes dramatically across cultures, religions and histories. In many Black communities, for example, hair carries entirely different political and personal meanings, shaped by histories of colonialism, discrimination and cultural pride. Across South Asia, East Asia and Indigenous cultures, long hair has often symbolised spirituality, ancestry or strength rather than passive femininity. The idea that long hair simply equals traditional womanhood is largely a product of white Western beauty ideals, and I recognise that my relationship with the bob belongs to that particular cultural context, not a universal one. Gibson points out that when women first adopted bobbed hair in the early twentieth century, it represented much more than a trend. "Short hair represented a shift in women's liberation and all the freedoms that came with it," she says.

Of course, I wasn't making a political statement at 17 or thinking about first-wave feminism, but that doesn't mean the cultural baggage wasn't there. The bob haircut has always carried a particular set of associations. Looking back at Louise Brooks in the 1920s, Vidal Sassoon's sharp geometric cuts of the 1960s or the power bobs of the 1990s worn by women like Anna Wintour and Linda Evangelista, again and again, the hairstyle appears on women associated with authority, creativity and independence. As Gibson puts it, "We tend to associate shorter hair with a certain type of woman: someone strong, someone cool, someone independent." And certain women have indeed become almost inseparable from their bob, whether that's Wintour or Alexa Chung.

Sam McKnight MBE, hairstylist and founder of haircare brand Hair by Sam McKnight, explains it perfectly. "The silhouette is a powerful thing. You instantly recognise someone by their silhouette. Think of Anna Wintour, Marilyn Monroe, Cleopatra! A bob has all the complexities that women do; the cut can be strong yet feminine, alluring yet commanding, strong [yet] soft and romantic."

He notes, "Alexa [Chungs]’s bob is always at the top of the Pinterest board because she knows when to make small tweaks and it feels instantly new. Whatever version of a bob she has, the essence of her is always there." Perhaps that's why the bob has endured for more than a century. It isn't one hairstyle, but hundreds. A sharp chin-length bob with blunt ends projects authority and precision. A softer French bob suggests creativity and insouciance, whilst a longer, shaggy version feels artistic, slightly rebellious and less interested in perfection. The silhouette remains recognisable, but its style can be ever-evolving. Like tailoring, it's endlessly adaptable; you can make it clean, romantic, or rock and roll.

At 17, I wanted all of those things at once. I wanted to seem intellectual without being boring, attractive without being accommodating, feminine without being conventional, in the same way as Elastica’s Justine Frischmann. The bob felt like it held all those possibilities. For a while, I genuinely believed that if I looked like those women, I might become them, but what happened instead was something better. The haircut became part of my identity as Eve, a kind of shorthand for the person I wanted to be: curious, opinionated, funny, ambitious and hopefully, just a little bit chic. Looking back, I realise I wasn't trying to look like Audrey Tautou or Justine Frischmann forever; I was borrowing confidence until I found my own, and that's what style so often does. We imitate before we individuate. Eventually, the references fall away, and what remains is you.

Years later, I still have my bob, and I've learnt that there is something deeply valuable about allowing yourself to become who you are. I think it is so important for women to believe in themselves, to take risks and see whether that next step leads them a little closer to who they are. Sometimes it won't, sometimes you'll get it wrong, but occasionally you make a decision that feels less like becoming someone new and more like recognising someone who you were all along.

Last week, a sales assistant in Tom Ford looked at me and said, "I'm from Jamaica, from a family of spiritual women; we know things. You have power. I can tell you're going to do big things. I mean, look at you, girl, with your Anna Wintour bob." I laughed, but I knew exactly what she meant. The bob has always carried cultural meaning. For more than a century, it has been associated with women who refuse to do what is expected of them, women who choose themselves. As McKnight says, a bob provides "a true sense of individuality, a rock-and-roll, devil-may-care rebellious streak. And we all love a rebel."

For years, hair mousse had something of a bad reputation. If you grew up in the early 2000s, you’ll probably remember the sticky foam that promised volume but more often left hair feeling stiff, crunchy or slightly helmet-like. It was a trade-off—lift at the roots in exchange for softness and natural movement. As a result, I abandoned it altogether in favour of lighter hairsprays or hair serums that felt more flexible and wearable for my fine hair.

But mousse has had a serious upgrade. Today’s formulations are a completely different category of product. They're lighter, more refined and far more intentional in how they build volume. Instead of that dense, sticky foam, modern mousses tend to feel airy and almost weightless, distributing evenly through the hair without clumping or coating strands in residue. The focus has shifted from stiff hold to flexible body, meaning hair can still move naturally whilst holding shape and lift throughout the day.

Why Do Some Hair Mousses Not Work for Fine Hair?

Not all mousses are created with fine hair in mind, which is often why results can feel underwhelming—or worse, heavy and sticky. How Do You Apply Hair Mousse to Fine Hair?

The key to applying mousse to fine hair is restraint and even distribution. Start with a golf-ball-sized amount (less for very fine or short hair), and work it through damp (not soaking wet) hair, focusing on roots for lift and mid-lengths for body. Timperley advises to “apply in sections and always mix the product in your fingers first so it’s evenly distributed.” To avoid crunchiness, steer clear of over-saturating the ends and use a hair dryer to activate lift. For softer results, she recommends layering gradually rather than applying too much at once, which is what typically causes heaviness or stiffness.

Whilst I've been known to dabble in various hair colour trends over the years, from balayage to highlights, I'm a brunette gal through and through. Possibly my favourite hair colour trend of the season, say hello to 'In-Between Brown'. "This is an updated version of sun-kissed brown as it’s the perfect in-between brown, with naturally lightened ends," explains Barron-Hough. "It can be tailored to suit both warm and cool complexions as the tones can be dialled up or down. We love hand-painting the lighter strands with a high-lift colour and glossing the roots and ends in between with a semi-permanent hair colour."

If you want to change things up a little bit, you can't go wrong with spiced brunette. "This colour trend is filled with a lot of energy and warm hues, such as gold and red," Barron-Hough tells me. "We love this colour as an all-over gloss for ultimate high-shine quality."

Fancy something with a little more depth? Deep summer brunette is giving me all the quiet luxury vibes. "[This trend] is all about drama and mystery," says Barron-Hough. "It’s somewhere in between dark brown and pure black. This is great as a semi-colour choice as it will add lots of depth and gloss to the hair. We [also] love it with a bob as it looks super chic."

Last but not least, this stylish, chocolatey brown hue. "This is the ultimate brown hair celeb trend worn by Peggy Gou, Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa and many more," says Barron-Hough. "It’s all about enhancing the natural hair colour with lots of depth and bringing out warmer hues such as brunettes and gold."

To get the look, Barron-Hough says to layer different hues and brunette levels, making it look natural but full of energy. "It can also be tailor-made to suit warm or cool complexions by adding more warmth, or subduing the brunette hues for a more opaque appearance," she tells me.

As a beauty editor, I've tested my fair share of interesting products over the years, from red light masks to foot peels, but my husband is actually the reason I’ve ended up going down the rabbit hole with hair thickening products. He’s always asking me what actually works, what’s hype, and what’s worth spending money on when his hair feels like it’s “not what it used to be”. So over the past year I’ve properly researched it, spoken to experts, and tested a lot more products than I ever expected to (he's also been a willing guinea pig). What I’ve learned is that hair thinning is rarely as simple as “just use a hair-strengthening shampoo” —it’s usually a mix of internal and external factors, and the solutions tend to be just as layered.

What’s also become really clear is that most people don’t notice thinning overnight. It’s gradual and often shows up months after an initial trigger. As Hollie Rose Clarke, stylist ambassador for Living Proof, explains: “Usually it’s not just one thing, it's part of our holistic health and wellness. Hair health is often a reflection of what’s going on internally as well as externally, and hair thinning normally begins four to six months after the trigger." That delay is what makes it so confusing—you’re often trying to fix something that started long before you noticed it. Between genetics, stress, diet shifts, hormonal changes, illness and even build-up from hard water or products, there are a lot of potential culprits. And in reality, it’s often a combination rather than a single cause.

What causes hair thinning?

Hair thinning can be triggered by a wide range of factors, and most people experience more than one at once. As dermatologist Dr Jason Thomson, consultant dermatologist and head of medical at Hair + Me, explains: “Pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss affecting both men and women. It is typically a gradual process influenced by both genetic and hormonal factors.” On top of this, stress can push hair follicles into the shedding phase, often showing up a few months later as increased hair fall. Diet, sleep, illness, seasonal changes and even rapid weight loss can also disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to temporary shedding known as telogen effluvium.

When should you seek help from a professional?

It’s normal to shed hair daily, but there’s a point where it shifts from normal to noticeable. Thomson notes that warning signs include “more hair on the pillow or in the shower, a significant amount of hair on the brush, hair feeling less dense, a widening part, or increased scalp visibility when wet.” He adds that if multiple symptoms persist for more than three months, it’s worth seeking a consultation to understand the underlying cause. Similarly, Clarke advises that if shedding is “excessive and lasting longer than a few months, or you’re seeing your scalp show through more or have developed patchy areas, it’s time to see a trichologist.”

What lifestyle changes can you make to help make hair thicker?

This is one of those areas where consistency genuinely makes a difference, but it takes time. Clarke explains that “consistency is key for healthy hair growth and does require patience and perseverance,” with improvements often seen after three to four months. Supporting hair from the inside out is essential—Thomson highlights the importance of “a healthy diet with enough protein and micronutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamin D.” Beyond nutrition, managing stress levels, prioritising sleep and avoiding excessive heat styling can all help reduce unnecessary shedding. Simple additions like scalp massage, using a clarifying shampoo to remove build-up, or even considering water filters or hair supplements can all contribute to a healthier scalp environment.

What products and ingredients can help make hair thicker?

When it comes to products, it’s less about quick fixes and more about creating the right conditions for the hair you already have. She also recommends using a flexible hairspray as both a heat protectant and a hold, then finishing with a dry volume spray for added fullness that can be reactivated throughout the day. A blunt haircut can also instantly create the illusion of thicker ends, while strategic colour placement and highlights add depth and dimension. Ultimately, it’s about building volume through both technique and product, rather than relying on one miracle step.

With summer finally here, I'm meticulously planning my next haircut. And as a beauty editor who studies hair trends for a living, it's easy to get swept up in TikTok hair trends. You see, I'm a low-effort hair person, and so I want a low-maintenance haircut that will see me through the season with minimal styling. Because when it's sunny out, I want to spend less time hairstyling and more time enjoying the weather whilst it lasts. And on a practical level, when it's hot, the last thing you want to do is be styling with your hair dryer for hours.

1. Soft Layered Bob

Bob haircuts aren't going anywhere for summer 2026, and a soft, layered bob is the perfect cut if you want something low-maintenance and versatile. A soft layered bob gives softness and movement, and is short enough that you won't need to tie it up in the heat, and stunning when blow-dried," says DeCarlo. "In the salon, ask for a bob with soft internal layers to create shape, keeping the outline clean for the classic bob look," he says. "At home: blow-dry with a round brush for volume, or leave to air dry for an effortless finish." If you're thinking of going for a bob hairstyle, then summer is the perfect time to go for the chop.

If you want a different short haircut, then don't overlook the mullet, which is getting a modern twist for 2026. "The mullet is back— longer at the back, shorter on the sides and front," says DeCarlo. "It's edgy, without being too committed to change if someone wants to try something new," he says. It's a great cut to go for if you're growing out a pixie cut, too. "In the salon, ask for a disconnected cut with length kept through the nape and a textured, cropped finish up top," says DeCarlo. "At-home style using a light matte paste for definition, or leave it undone for a relaxed feel," he says.

"For those who want low-effort with styling, the textured shag is the cut of the summer," says DeCarlo. "This cut works beautifully for everyone, especially for those growing out a pixie who are craving something longer, and messier hair is having a real moment right now," he says. "In the salon, ask for soft, shaggy layers with plenty of texture throughout. And to style at home, spritz through some salt spray on damp hair, leave to air dry and you're done."

4. '90s Layers

Wanting to keep your longer lengths? '90s face-framing layers are the haircut to bookmark for your next salon visit. "90s layers offer pure nostalgia," says DeCarlo. Think face-framing layers and angles at the front with a blunt finish at the bottom, which creates seamless movement. It's gorgeous worn sleek or with a voluminous 90s blow-dry," he says. Eagland recommends using a large round brush to create the bounce, but you can also get the look with a hot brush if you want to dry and style at the same time.

If a shag haircut feels like too much, opting for shaggy layers is a way to add more movement and body to your hair. "Shaggy layers were made for summer, and this cut is perfect for those who want minimal effort and a lot of movement on medium and long hair. It's perfect for air-drying on hot days, beach trips, or holidays, too," says DeCarlo. "In the salon, ask for lived-in layers with a choppy, undone finish. Then at home, scrunch in a styling cream or salt spray on damp hair and let it air dry. Or enhance your air-dried hair with curling tongs for a bit more of a polished finish," he says.

Thinking of a fringe for summer? DeCarlo tells me that it's a great way to tweak your style without undergoing a drastic change. "There are two fringe options that transform your look without changing your entire haircut," he says. "A curtain fringe is perfect for summer, and you can wear your hair up, and you still have a style with the fringe down. Or, wispy fringes sit shorter at the brow for a chic edge," he says. "In the salon, ask for either a centre-parted curtain fringe, or a feathered fringe cut shorter at the centre, sitting at the brow," says DeCarlo. "At home, a quick blow-dry of the fringe alone and you're polished in minutes."

What Is a Tapered Bob?

There seems to be countless bobs trending at any one time, so understanding exactly what defines a tapered bob is crucial if you’re thinking about asking your hairdresser for this cut. “It’s a bob that gradually gets shorter towards the nape of the neck, creating a neat, close-fitting shape…with a soft, streamlined silhouette,” explains hair stylist Elliot Bute from Hershesons, Fitzrovia. While some people use the term interchangeably with graduated bob, Bute does point out that they aren’t the same cut. “The two styles do overlap, but a graduated bob relies on stacked layers to build volume at the back,” he explains.

Who Suits a Tapered Bob?

As someone with textured hair, I’m always on the fence about going short for fear that my cut will end up looking blocky or overly volumised. However, Bute believes the beauty of the tapered bob is that it is so versatile and works on most hair types. “Fine hair can look fuller, thick hair benefits from having some weight removed, and natural waves add movement to the cut,” he says. “The key is tailoring the shape to the individual’s hair density and face shape… maybe with some subtle graduation or layering to enhance the tapered silhouette.”

Tapered Bob Inspiration

While we expect the tapered bob to really take off over the next few months, Bute advises looking to celebrities like Lily Collins, Selena Gomez and Millie Bobby Brown for inspiration right now. "Each wears a slightly different version, from sleek and sharp to softer and more textured, making them useful references for a salon consultation," he explains.

If you're thinking of dipping your toe into the tapered bob trend, then make like Lily Collins and keep the lengths at the front just slightly longer than the back.

Sometimes, when it's hot outside, I just want to throw my hair up into a bun. However, the trick to making it look modern is a high-shine, glossy finish. "The slicked-back bun is the ultimate summer style as it suits all hair types, from straight to wavy, short or long," says Cos Sakkas, three-times British Hairdresser of the Year and TONI&GUY global creative director. "For that high-shine finish, work a hair oil through the hair before pulling it back. Use a strong-hold gel such as LABEL.M Fashion Edition Gel to smooth and hold flyaways."

If you prefer to wear your hair down, why not go for a wavy style? "Summer waves are softly sculptured, weightless, fluid and full of natural movement," Sakkas tells me. "Break up the waves with a styling cream for that lived-in texture."

He recommends starting with a volumising mousse through the roots, then working a hair gel through the ends to keep everything smooth.

Ok, I know this technically involves cutting your hair, but a fringe is a great way to switch up your hairstyle for summer. "A fringe is one of the most powerful tools in a hairdresser's kit. It can completely reframe someone's face and change the whole personality of a haircut," says Mark Woolley, founder of Electric London. "Soft, effortless fringes such as the side fringe are popular this summer as they can look bold or subtle, gently textured or with a little bit of attitude."

Even with tonnes of hair tools such as hot brushes and curling wands at my disposal as a beauty editor, I actually can't stand my hair looking too "done". Don't get me wrong, I love a bouncy blow-dry when the occasion calls for it. But day-to-day, I like my hair to look effortless and undone, like I just so happened to have rolled out of bed with perfectly dishevelled loose waves.

So it's probably unsurprising that Sienna Miller, Alexa Chung and Kate Moss are amongst some of my hair icons for their perfectly undone hairstyling and piece-y waves. The best thing about summer hair trends is that they aren't really all that rigid—literally and figuratively. We tend to see lots of airy, textured silhouettes on the rise, yet the trends themselves also aren't too stringent. As celebrity hairstylist Sky Kim shares, "Summer always brings hair back to freedom. It’s less structured, more expressive." As we shed our winter layers for linen sets and breezy slips, hair becomes looser, more lived-in—especially in 2026, when embracing piece-y movement is very much en vogue.

"2025 was sleek, minimal, and controlled. 2026 is expressive, textural, and a little rebellious in a wearable way," adds Kim. As such, we're seeing polished cuts and styles give way to bolder (yet still natural) iterations, all of which you can find when you scroll ahead.

Just a quick note before diving in: While I've labelled some haircuts and colours below as "out," by no means am I saying they should stay buried. Beauty trends have a funny way of cycling in and out of the spotlight, so you might very well see them again once fall rolls back around. For summer 2026, though, these are the seven swaps on the rise.

Out: Blunt Bobs | In: Lived-In Layers

If you sported a chin-skimming crop last summer, you're not alone. It was arguably the year of the bob—from voluminous "Riviera" bobs to sleek Prada" bobs to '60s-inspired "flipped" bobs—and if you, too, committed to the shorter cut, you're probably currently residing in lob territory. As you encompass the grow-out period, try leaning into soft movement and texture (such as airy layers) as opposed to blunt bobs.

Celebrity hairstylist Reece Walker agrees: "Many clients who had strong blunt bobs are now growing them out and really embracing hair that feels less structured and more lived-in," he shares. Consider it the pendulum swing from bold, sophisticated cuts to styles with more of an "undone" feel.

Out: Solid Cool Tones | In: Warmth and Dimension

"Flat, one-note hair colour is fading, especially overly cool, ashy tones that don’t reflect light," says Kim. "Instead, people are leaning into dimension and natural undertones. Think warm blondes, reds that enhance what’s already in your hair, and brunettes with subtle tonal ribbons. It’s very reflective, very alive—colour that shifts in the light rather than sitting flat." Walker echoes her declaration, adding that dimension in colour is going to be huge. "Less flat, solid colour and more depth and movement," he notes.

Dakota Johnson is the perfect example, as she recently transformed her rich brunette length to a dimensional dirty blonde at this year's Time 100 gala. It's the first time in years she switched up her go-to shade, so that's when you know the colour trend has legs. Time this as your sign to book in for some balayage.

Out: Blended Curtain Bangs | In: "Bratty" Bangs

Long curtain bangs are A+ for those who aren't necessarily ready to commit to the bang life, but in summer 2026, there's little room for middle ground. "Soft, overly blended curtain bangs are out," Kim asserts. Instead? A bold, "bratty" side bang reigns supreme. "It’s shorter, slightly choppier and more intentional. It sits higher, hits around the cheekbone or brow, and feels a little undone in a way that gives attitude rather than softness," she adds. "It’s less about perfectly feathered face framing and more about creating shape and edge."

Out: Subtle Tones | In: Expressive Colour

While haircuts are becoming increasingly more lived-in, "Colour is where it gets exciting," notes Kim. "We’re seeing a move toward dimensional, expressive colour, similar to that Alyssa Liu energy where it feels bold and wild." You don't necessarily have to commit to a halo hair colour like Liu, but for those craving more of a summer statement, consider this your sign to embrace high-contrast (dare I say ombré?) hair. "I think the drastic dual tones are coming back, like Billie Eilish’s green hair roots, dark tips, etc.," adds Kim.

Out: Glassy Slick-Backs | In: Textured Updos

Allow me to clarify: a slick-back will never truly fall out of favour. But stylists can't ignore the onslaught of lived-in, piece-y updos that just feel unrestricted. Shares Kim, "2025 felt very controlled, sleek, polished, and almost uniform—a lot of glass hair, tight finishes, and minimal variation. 2026 is breaking that open. There’s more personality, more texture, and more confidence in letting hair feel lived-in." Again, slick-backs will never be fully "out," but they are becoming less helmet-like. "Even when the look is polished, it’s not rigid. It’s less about perfection and more about identity," Kim adds.

Out: Tucked Bobs | In: Tucked Bixies

Remember when the tucked bob (aka a bob secured behind one or both ears) became all the buzz? We're starting to see a similar style take shape this summer, but it's a tad shorter, kissing the nape of the neck instead of the tops of the shoulders. Celebs like Gracie Abrams, Carey Mulligan, and Olandria Carthen (pictured above) have all embraced the chic tucked pixie cut, choosing to tuck their pixie behind just one ear to show off their bone structure. Out: Bombshell Blowouts | In: "C" Curls

Like classic slick-backs, bouncy, bombshell blowouts will never completely go away. Feel free to enjoy your '90s style all summer long, but if you want to embrace the new It-girl blowout, try your hand at softer "C" curls. "It’s a classic French blowout but with a nice bend and 'C' shape at the ends," explains celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, who recently created the look for Gigi Hadid. "Instead of a flat-ironed straight hair look, this is a beautiful blowout with a gorgeous bend."

According to the pro, it also looks divine paired with a feathery, mid-length cut. "This look is very modern and fresh," he adds. "The 'C' curl is going to be the new hairstyle for the summer!"

I reached out to Andrew Heasman, international creative director at Rush Hair, to get his take on the biggest summer bob trends of 2026. First up, the butterfly bob. "One of the top bob trends for summer 2026, the butterfly bob will be everywhere," says Heasman. "This cut infuses the silhouette of the classic bob cut with the ‘undone’ essence of a butterfly cut." When it comes to styling, Heasman tells me that texture and movement are key. "I’d recommend using a medium-sized round brush and volumising mousse to heighten the appearance of the graduated layers and amp up the volume without looking overdone."

2. Midi Bob

If you're looking for a more relaxed version of the classic bob haircut, Heasman wants you to know about the midi bob. "As the name suggests, it falls somewhere mid-length between the shoulder and collarbone," he tells me. "This cut can revitalise the hair to create healthier, fuller, thicker-looking locks, getting rid of split ends and preventing further damage."

3. Curved Lob

Speaking of relaxed bob hairstyles, you can't go wrong with a lob, and this curved finish looks so chic. "A curved lob is a super-precise shoulder-length bob which curves inwards at the ends, mirroring the silhouette of a ‘C’," explains Heasman. "This exaggerated finish is a new approach to styling what is quite a simple cut—it’s elegant with an essence of drama." To style, Heasman advises lightly spritzing a heat protectant over the hair and using straighteners to accentuate the curve. "Lightly pull the hair towards the chin for a sculpted appearance and finish with a light-hold hairspray to ensure your style stays in place all day."

If you want something super sophisticated, why not try the Italian bob? "The Italian bob pays homage to the Dolce Vita lifestyle, mixing the Milanese aesthetic with your classic big, bouncy blow-dry," Heasman tells me. "It’s glamorous, playful and beaming with styling opportunities, making it one of the more versatile options for summer 2026. The voluminous finish gives the hair a full and healthy appearance, which is always a good look."

5. Micro Mini Bob

"Fun, flirty and totally flattering—the micro mini bob has cool girl written all over it," says Heasman. "This style focuses on precise lines, which naturally enhance softer face shapes, but this style can easily be altered for a more delicate finish." Although there are lots of ways to style this cut, Heasman says it looks great when left to air-dry, which is music to my ears for the summer months. "I’d recommend using a light spritz of texture spray to boost volume and style the hair," he tells me.

Last but by no means least, say hello to the soft bob. "The soft bob encapsulates a feminine approach to the classic blunt bob, offering a much more effortless rendition with its summery, relaxed feel," explains Heasman. "The ends of the hair are feathered, which amplifies the hair’s texture and adds movement and definition with the cut’s shoulder-length finish. This cut pairs beautifully with a face-framing fringe to harmonise the face's features and add a sculpted essence to the look."

I don't think I've ever spoken as much about hair health as I have in the past few months. Between prepping for my wedding and suddenly experiencing hair loss at the front of my scalp, I've found myself researching all the best shampoos, conditioners, scalp serums and hair tools to keep my strands in tip-top condition—not to mention reaching out to every single expert I know to ask them what I can do. That being said, as a beauty editor, I've learned to become a bit more sceptical over the years, especially when it comes to beauty tech. What Can an LED Hairbrush Help With?

"Light therapy is thought to prolong the growth phase of the hair growth cycle, as well as encourage resting follicles to re-enter the growth phase," explains Kingsley. "It may also be anti-inflammatory, and inflammation is present in both male and female pattern hair loss." That being said, Kingsley tells me that whilst there is evidence that LED can help support hair growth, an LED hairbrush is more suitable for early signs of thinning and is more effective when used alongside other established treatments.

"Devices with teeth that part the hair can be better if you have thicker or denser hair. Consistency is key, so choose a device that you enjoy using," she adds.

How Often Do You Need to Use an LED Hairbrush?

As mentioned, consistency is key. "Female and male pattern hair loss are progressive hair loss conditions, so any treatment you use needs to be ongoing," Kingsley explains. "Frequency of use varies between devices, and you should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Usually, this is 3-4 times per week."

I then go through again, brushing up from the bottom as my scalp is particularly itchy around my ears and the nape of my neck.

The brush has three settings: vibrate, red LED and blue LED. Blue LED has been shown to reduce inflammation in mild-to-moderate scalp psoriasis by slowing skin cell turnover. Whilst it’s too early to see true results yet, I’ve been using it daily for around three weeks and can report that my scalp feels soothed and a little less itchy with consistent use. My only gripe is that the instructions say to run through the settings for one minute each, but the brush is lacking a built-in timer to indicate when it’s time to switch to the next setting. That said, you can use it for up to 20 minutes at a go, so there’s no danger if you end up running over the recommended time. According to King, its popularity lies in the way it hits the sweet spot between low-maintenance ease and fashion-forward feel. “It’s all about removing weight, creating airy movement and allowing the texture to develop organically,” says King.

2. Blunt Bob

"Even with stronger silhouettes like the blunt bob, the trend now is towards softness and movement rather than overly polished finishes," reveals King. "The shape still feels clean and elevated, but the internal texture stops it from looking rigid. We’re seeing people want glossy, healthy hair that still has personality and movement," he adds.

3. Asymmetric Bob

This style is perfect if you don't want to lose too much length. It's easy to wear as you don't need to do too much to it. "The movement feels natural rather than overly styled," explains King. The shaggy bob really reflects where hair trends are moving right now, towards cuts that feel naturally beautiful, slightly imperfect and full of movement. "Texture sprays are essential for creating grit, separation and that perfectly lived-in texture without losing softness," he says.

Being a beauty editor, I try a lot of hair tools for a living. From hair straighteners to hair multi-stylers and hair dryers to curling wands and thermal brushes, I've tried nearly all of them. I'll admit it's a saturated market, and whenever a new hair tool lands on my desk, I greet it with a bit of scepticism. Can it really do anything different from what's already out there?

However, when I heard that Hershesons was launching The Great Iron (£120), I already knew it wouldn't be just like any other hair tool. My Experience

Before

I'd describe my hair type as somewhat wavy, thick and coarse in areas (hello, frizz). It's not often that I straighten my hair, but my biggest gripe with most straighteners is feeling like they're dragging or tugging through my hair. These, however, glide through my hair like a hot knife through butter and give me a very sleek result in just one pass.

I have a lot of hair, but I could easily straighten my hair in 10 minutes. Of course, if you have curly or coily hair, this will take longer. And if I had to nit-pick, I do wish the plates were slightly wider for straightening larger sections. That being said, the plates are nimble enough to get right to the root and are a great size for short and medium-length hair.

It features tourmaline-titanium floating plates that bend and move with your hair as you work it through your lengths. The 360° swivel cord means you never feel tethered by the cord, and there are three different temperature settings (120°C, 180°C and 230°C), which you can toggle through the main power button with ease, so you can tailor the heat to your hair type and texture. I opted for 180°C and applied a heat protector to shield my lengths from the heat. They also heat up very fast, and come with a protective cover and pouch to store when they're not in use.

Possibly my favourite feature is the curved edges, which means you can do so much more with these than regular hair straighteners. I've never mastered curling with hair straighteners (I always end up with kinked curls that look like I've curled ribbons with scissors—anyone else?), but the rounded plates and curved barrel on these mean I can get the soft, loose curls I favour. But that's not all. You can even do S-waves with these to get that piecey Sienna Miller-esque waves that I cannot wait to try over summer. I can see why Hershesons called these The Great Iron and not The Great Hair Straightener, because they really can do so much more than just straighten your hair.

Having put The Great Hair Iron through its paces over the past couple of weeks, I have to say I like it even more than I thought I would. I'm already a fan of Hershesons hair tools (the Multi-Tasker is a favourite 3-in-1 tool I use regularly), but this feels like the missing piece in my hairstyling routine. Not only is it a great hair straightener, but it can be used in so many different ways to add soft bends, waves or curls into your hair. At £120, they're an investment, but on par with similar hair straighteners on the market and feel like a justified investment. They're a joy to use, they look chic, they give great results and deliver an incredible shine. But most importantly, the versatility means you're getting multiple hairstylers in one.

Mensah says, "An Afro bob is a bob shaped specifically with textured hair in mind. It honours the density, movement and beauty of curls, coils or stretched natural hair, rather than forcing the hair into a shape designed for straighter textures. It can be sculpted soft and rounded, sharp and graphic, chin-length, shoulder-grazing or layered for lift and movement. The beauty of an Afro bob is that it celebrates shape."

Do Bobs Suit Afro Hair?

"Absolutely! Bobs can be beautiful on Afro hair. In many ways, textured hair gives a bob more character, volume and presence. The key lies in tailoring the cut to your curl pattern, density, shrinkage and how you like to wear your hair day to day. A good bob should work with your texture, not against it", says Mensah.

Tips for Getting a Bob with Afro Hair

• Book a consultation first and foremost so that you can speak to your stylist before doing anything. Understand the look you want to achieve, and talk through how your stylist will approach it. A lot can be uncovered in that conversation.
• Bring reference images to help communicate shape, fullness, length and finish, while giving your stylist something tangible to respond to. Come open-minded too, as the right bob should suit both your texture and your features.
• Wear your hair as you usually wear it so your stylist understands its natural behaviour. Talk about shrinkage, as a curly bob and a stretched bob can sit very differently. Be honest about maintenance, too. If you want ease, say so. If you enjoy styling, that opens up other possibilities.
• Face shape, neckline and the experience of the stylist all matter. A well-cut bob should frame you beautifully, and textured hair deserves someone who understands how to cut for shape.

If you often blow-dry your hair, try opting for a one-length, also known as a blunt bob. It requires much lower upkeep than a traditional cut and less frequent trims, not to mention it looks sleek and intentional.

If your hair has natural, different-length coils to it, embrace it in the form of a layered bob. This voluminous hairstyle will give your bob effortless structure and requires minimal styling to look chic.

My hair might be thick, but the weight of it all means my roots often look seriously flat. No matter how many volumising hair products I use, I can never get that bouncy finish I long for. However, what really caught my attention when researching the brand was the concise edit of products, the easy-to-follow routine and affordable price point. Even as a beauty editor, I find the world of haircare overhwhelming, but this launch was a refreshing change. So, I did what any good journalist would do, and called the products in to try them out for myself.

With four products currently available, including a shampoo, conditioner, leave-in hair mask and scalp serum, I decided to put everything to the test on hair wash day. Of course, it goes without saying that you would need to use the scalp serum for a long time to see results, but I was intrigued to see whether I'd notice any immediate changes when using the rest of the range. So, I stepped straight into the shower and got to work.

The first thing I noticed when testing the shampoo and conditioner was how fresh and subtle the scent was. I personally don't like anything too overpowering, so this already got a big tick from me. The only thing I didn't like was that the shampoo didn't lather that much, but it did leave my roots feeling squeaky clean, so I can't complain. The conditioner was nice and lightweight yet still felt nourishing, and when I towel-dried my hair after washing, I could already tell that my ends felt softer and like they had more elasticity.

I applied the leave-in mask onto damp ends, and wow. This product feels like butter, and after applying a small amount, my brush glided through my hair with ease. If you have finer hair, I would definitely be careful not to apply too much, as it could weigh hair down, but I have to say, this might be my favourite product from the brand so far. I also applied the scalp serum to my roots, and whilst the brand recommends using it for at least three months to see results, I'm already impressed by how lightweight and non-greasy the formula is. The minty scent and fun dropper applicator also get top points from me.

After using all four products from the brand, I can confidently say that I am excited to add everything to my permanent haircare routine. After blow-drying my hair, I was blown away (pardon the pun) by how healthy and bouncy it looked and felt, and that's just after one use. Seriously, I can never get my roots to look this voluminous without heaps and heaps of product, which inevitably makes them look greasy, but I am so impressed by the shampoo and conditioner alone.

When new brands come on the scene, I'm always a little skeptical about whether we need more products in our lives, but Bouf's simple, science-based approach feels like a welcome change. However, the departure from CBK’s decisively understated sartorial philosophy didn’t end with the daring hue; it continued into her beauty look, where she traded her iconic straight lengths for tousled, loose waves that certainly piqued interest.

Perhaps channelling the waves of Hyannis Port—an exclusive enclave in Massachusetts that plays home to the Kennedy Compound, where CBK and her husband, JFK Jr., would spend most of their summers—the hairstyle added dimension and movement to her otherwise slick set.

However, as a certified lazy girl myself, it was the effortlessly elegant feeling imbued in these beachy bends that I found the most profound. As revealed on Instagram by celebrity hairstylist Christian Wood, the look only required a few hair tools and a spritz of a solid shine spray that “cheats hair health while adding subtle separation and definition to the waves”.

In fact, with the weather warming and plans being made to spend the upcoming season escaping to some sun-kissed paradise, I would contend that this hairstyle is like a shortcut to achieving those balmy, blissful curls that only come after spending your day in salty water and holding an Aperol Spritz.

Still, as undone and carefree as it is, there’s still quite a bit of shape and hold in the strands, providing that “just came from the most expensive hair salon in the city” sensation that’s always so covetable. How to Re-Create Sarah Pidgeon's 2026 Met Gala Hairstyle

Starting with damp roots, Wood first went in with the Kenra Root Lifting Spray before spritzing Pidgeon’s mid-lengths and ends with the Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray and finishing with a final coat of Kenra Platinum Silkening Gloss from root to tip for “extra shine and softness.” (Kenra isn’t currently available in the UK, but there are plenty of incredible alternatives that will deliver a similar result, which I’ve shared below.)

Once the hair was prepped and primed, he then “sectioned the hair starting at the nape and blow-dried it section by section with a round brush to create a smooth, silky base for the waves,” as Wood explained on social media. “Once the hair was completely dry, I parted it down the middle using a tail comb.”

The next step was the most vital—creating the curves. Using a hair straightener, which is proof that even those with access to top-tier beauty products and tools aren’t above using something that simple and effective—he worked from the back of the neck to the front, creating an S-shaped wave as he went. To do this, you slowly curve the tool in a soft, undulating motion as you move it down the section, resulting in a subtle bend through the lengths.

Once Wood got to the front of the face, he switched over to a curling iron and repeated the same motion, noting that he bent the hair away from the face. After the hair had cooled for five minutes, he “sprayed a little Kenra Platinum Dry Texture Spray at the roots to add volume and a generous spray of Kenra Shine Spray through the mid-lengths and ends”. The shine spray “really helps cheat hair health while adding subtle separation and definition to the waves”, he noted.

As for the finishing touches, he “brushed out the waves with a wide-tooth comb and sprayed a toothbrush with Kenra Fast-Dry Hairspray to remove any flyaways”. To lock everything in and add an extra glossy touch, he “warmed a few drops of Kenra Luxe Shine Oil in my hands and gently rubbed it over the ends of the hair to add shine and give a subtle, broken-up texture.” Effective and architectural without being overly fussy, this look will be my go-to this summer.

And I’m putting it down to the fact that the summer hair trends for 2026 will undoubtedly appeal to the low-maintenance amongst us. Yes, I’ve been busy talking to industry’s top hairstylists and colourists, and there’s one thing that they all agree on for the season ahead: summer hair is going to be a whole lot more relaxed.

"Summer hair is moving away from anything overworked or overly done," says celebrity hair stylist Sam McKnight MBE. "It’s that idea of luxury through restraint; soft, touchable texture, natural movement, nothing too styled. And there’s a definite return to '90s minimalism too, which we’re seeing again through our renewed obsession with Carolyn Bessette Kennedy."

"Low-maintenance, but high impact," explains Mary Wheatley, colourist at Hershesons Fitzrovia. "Think mixes of warms and beige, blondes with natural depth, and soft, natural tones with sun-kissed vibes."

1. Shaggy Bob

Naturally, this wouldn’t be a 2026 hair trends report unless a bob was in the mix. For summer, though, it’s the shaggy bob that will dominate; a natural shift away from the precisely cut styles that we’ve been seeing towards something more relaxed.

"I am so excited about the return of the shaggy bob," says Samantha Cusick, celebrity hair stylist and ghd ambassador. "Unlike the sharp, geometric bob that we’ve had for a few seasons, this one is softer. It’s got layers, it’s got curtain fringe energy, and it moves."

What appeals most about this style is how little effort it actually requires. It’s the kind of cut that gives your hair shape and personality without the need for constant styling. "It works on so many different textures and lengths, which makes it so wearable, and it’s one of those cuts that actually gets better as it grows out," explains Cusick.

2. Floating Fringe

Call it the Margot Robbie effect, but fringes have been enjoying a renaissance of late. However, there is no denying that bangs can be high-maintenance, which is where summer’s floating fringe comes in.

"Effortless, light, wearable… this summer, it’s going to be all about a soft fringe that floats just above the brows and opens subtly through the centre," says Antonio Hector, stylist at Hershesons Belgravia. "It's not short enough to be a micro-fringe, but it should feel light and broken enough to lift and frame the face."

If you’re on the fence about going for the chop, then the beauty of this fringe is that it doesn’t take over your whole look. Instead, its wispiness gently frames the face and grows out subtly so you avoid the need for weekly trims.

3. Layered Lob

Mid-length hairstyles are having a moment right now and make for the perfect in-between option if you’re not sure about whether to chop or grow your hair.

"Softer, more relaxed shapes are really going to dominate for summer, particularly longer, grown-out bobs and layered mid-length cuts," says Neale Rodger, style director at Stil London. "These styles offer versatility and movement whilst still feeling lightweight for summer, combined with a rise in subtle face-framing layers and airy fringes, which give structure without feeling too heavy."

The beauty of the lob is how adaptable it is. As Rodger points out, this is a cut that "works with the hair’s natural behaviour rather than against it," so you can air-dry it, heat-style it, tie it up, wear it loose; it works effortlessly with whatever kind of summer you’re enjoying.

4. The Bixie

Probably the edgiest style in the summer lineup, the "bixie" is already taking over as one of the most-asked-for cuts ever since Zendaya stepped out with one this spring. However, it’s surprisingly wearable in real life too.

"The standout cut for me is a modern, textured bixie—something that sits between a classic bob and a pixie," explains Tobias Bell, hairstylist and UK Amika stylist partner. "There’s a strong rock 'n' roll influence coming through a lot of this season’s cuts, which is all about movement and shape, rather than perfection. This cut has that slightly undone edge that feels very current."

The bixie will definitely make a statement, but not in an intimidating way. So if you’re after a cool chop for summer, it makes a great option.

5. CBK Blonde

Minimalists rejoice. Buttery blonde is back, inspired directly by Love Story and Carolyn Bassette Kennedy’s iconic '90s honeyed hair.

"In salon, we’re really taking our cues from the renewed buzz around Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, which has definitely been sparked by Love Story," explains Marley Xavier, colourist at Hershesons Belgravia. "This is the kind of blonde that transcends trends—it’s cool, clean and effortlessly striking."

What makes this shade stand out is just how polished it is. This is less about trying to create a lived-in look or add lots of dimension; it’s about creating a really refined, even, golden tone with root-to-tip highlights. It works best when paired with pared-back styling, like a clean centre parting and a simple blowdry.

6. Golden-Hour Brunette

Whilst blonde always dominates as the most-requested colour change in salons for summer, this season, brunettes are about to enjoy a major upgrade in the form of "golden hour brunette".

"You’re going to start hearing this term everywhere," says Cusick. "It’s a rich, dimensional, glossy colour that almost glows under every light. Think deep bases with warm caramel and honey ribbons running through—a colour that has real depth but also catches the light in the most beautiful way."

This is the kind of colour that looks expensive without being obvious. And, as Cusick points out, the key is to find a colourist who will completely personalise the colour to each client so that it looks effortless.

7. Statement Shades

Whilst natural tones are having a moment, there’s still space for something a little more expressive this summer, too.

"Colour is definitely splitting in two directions. On one side, we’re seeing rich, glossy tones with depth, and on the other, there’s a return to statement colours like coppers, pinks and grungier tones," explains Bell. The key to making a bright or more experimental hue feel wearable lies in how it's worn. Bell advises teaming it with a textured cut so your colour feels lived-in.

Late but extremely worth the wait, Rihanna floated onto the mossy Met Gala carpet adorned in a silver, gold, and bronze gem-encrusted gown with matching makeup and hair. The devil was in the details: Golden spirals adorned her slicked curls, and gems decorated her eyes and mimicked falling tears. The multi-hyphenate also made a case for frosted lips; her Cupid's bow glistening champagne-gold.

Beyoncé looks every bit a sun goddess in her bejeweled headpiece, flowing curls, and skeleton-inspired gown (and every bit the proud mother at Blue Ivy's first Met). To allow her couture to steal the show, she kept her makeup simple and beautiful—but that by no means means boring. Her cool-pink blush, placed on the apples of her cheeks, adds a youthful glow while her eyes and lips are frosted with glittery shadows and glosses.

To finish the look, Schafer popped on a medium pink lipstick, skipped mascara, and blew her hair dry into bouncy, romantic waves.
