If there's one hair trend that's not going anywhere this autumn, it's short hair. I'm not just talking about bob hairstyles, either. Yes, the bob is very much here to stay this season, but autumn brings a whole host of short hair trends if you're thinking about getting the chop.

"Long hair will always be in fashion, but we are seeing more clients asking for shorter haircuts, looking for a tailored look that suits their hair texture, highlights their bone structure, but is still versatile and on trend," says Cos Sakkas, three-time British Hairdresser of the Year and Toni&Guy global creative director.

It makes sense, really. A new season always makes me want to try something new with my hair, and after chatting to Sakkas about the biggest autumn short hair trends of 2026, there are plenty of looks to choose from. 6 Short Hair Trends to Try This Autumn

1. The "Trixie"

First up, the "trixie". A soft take on your classic pixie, Sakkas says this will be one of the biggest short hair trends this season. As Sakkas explains, this style balances precision with soft, airy texture. "This version is a gentle, grown-out take on the timeless crop," he says. "Partner with a velvety, ultra-dark brown [hair colour] designed to elevate your style with richness and dimension."

2. The Mini Shag

Next up, the mini shag. "[This is] everything we love about the shag hairstyle, sized down with short face-framing texture around the cheekbones, and a heavy fringe that’s mischievous and bold," says Sakkas. "Apply LABEL.M Fashion Edition Styling Cream for hold and definition."

3. Lots of Layers

Lob hairstyles are still going strong, and according to Hailey Bieber, this season is all about layers. As you can see from the picture above, her layered lob features lots of natural movement, creating that effortless-looking feel that I'm always desperate to recreate.

"This bob sits above the shoulders and reinvents the classic cut with an undone, effortless take," Sakkas tells me. "It’s understated, chic and iconic. It feels fresh and fashion-forward but still gives you enough length to wear it tucked behind the ears or pulled back when you want to."

5. The Precision Crop

If you want something super fashion-forward, why not try this style? "Short, sharp and graphic, this sculptured crop is perfect for those looking for something a bit bolder," says Sakkas. "Pair it with a strong parting and play with the length through the top for a hint of attitude."

6. The Honey Bob

Whilst everyone is busy discussing all of the best fashion looks from the Venice Film Festival, it's Penélope Cruz's honey-coloured bob that's captured my attention. In my opinion, this is the perfect short hairstyle for the autumn months, as the warm, golden hue and sleek finish look so elevated.

There's an unmistakable chill in the air, and the evenings are drawing in. Autumn is mere days away. Even as an incredibly summer-pilled person, I can't resist the allure of warm, cosy nights and the "back-to-school" reset that happens around this time. Whilst I may no longer be studying, there's something about September that makes me want to shake up my routine, from purchasing unnecessary stationery to re-thinking my beauty rotation.

Yes, with the change of seasons comes the familiar urge to chop off my split ends, and of course, brave a bob. It's the quintessential short autumn hairstyle—I mean, what looks better with a trench and a chunky knit? And of course, there's no dearth of inspiration this AW26. "Bobs are definitely back this autumn with a myriad of ways to wear them," notes TONI&GUY Global Creative Director, Cos Sakkas. "We’ve had structured, smooth and high-shine finishes, and are moving to more lived-in, effortless styles that are easy to achieve if you’re short on time and skill."

So, whether you're partial to an undone shag, or want something that complements your features beautifully, there's something for everyone ahead.

6 Autumn Bob Trends for 2026

1. The Bixie

Eva Goulding at Nicola Clarke Salon has hailed the "bixie" as the bob of the season. As the name suggests, it's a mix between a pixie and a bob. "It's a little more daring than your below-chin bob, so it’s perfect for those who are contemplating a pixie cut, but want to test it out first," the hairstylist explains. "Think of it as a short bob with graduation, but not in the way we've seen before. This shape is a lot less structured, and the length lifts up to the lips, rather than falling triangularly."

2. The Butterfly Bob

If you're a fan of the wolf cut, which was everywhere last autumn, then you'll probably be keen on the butterfly bob too. It's a softer, more whimsical evolution of that movement, explains award-winning hairstylist Gustav Fouche. "Rather than strong, solid lines, you have much more texture here. There are lots of layers around the face to emphasise the cheekbones and jawline, and the overall length sits somewhere between the jaw and collarbone. You can think of it as a more modern, layered version of the bob."

3. The Kicked-Out Bob

The kicked-out bob continues to reign supreme for AW26. This time around, though, it's a little longer, but still all one length with minimal layering. As Goulding explains: "Your hairstylist will focus on graduation to encourage the hair to naturally kick outwards." Plus, it's very easy to style and great for most hair types, as you can wear it wavy, curly or straight."

4. The Boyfriend Bob

This season's androgynous boyfriend bob is a slightly shorter, sharper take on the style. "This isn't a heavily layered bob," notes Fouche. "You want to retain a strong line through the bottom to give it that androgynous feel, but personalise it through the front with subtle layering around the cheekbones and movement around the face. It’s often worn with a centre parting, although it can easily be flicked to the side." Of course, if you prefer, it can sit anywhere from below the ear to more of a lob length.

5. The Overgrown Shag Bob

The shag has been sported by everyone from Jenna Ortega to Selena Gomez and Alexa Chung. It's not hard to see why it's so popular; it's endlessly versatile, and this season, it's grown out a tad more.

"It's slightly longer and sits between the jaw and collarbone," explains Sakkas. "It comes to life when worn tousled, and is the anti-glass hair finish. The trick is to style it like you're not trying—use product for texture and hold rather than smoothness and shine. The undone finish makes it perfect for square and heart shapes with fine and medium naturally textured hair."

6. The Curved Bob

Perhaps the most flattering for those with round and oval faces, the curved bob is a rounded, jaw-skimming blunt cut, which is softened with a subtle curve. "The curves keep it strong, but its softer corners are more wearable, making it ideal for people with medium to thick hair," notes Sakkas. "It’s less messy than the French bob but looks more expensive and fashion-forward."

Whilst January marks the official start of the year, September is a new beginning in itself. Even as an adult, I still get that seasonal itch to head to a WH Smith for a fresh set of stationery and a pencil case. It marks the start of a new season, where many of us enjoy that scholastic nostalgia whilst simultaneously embracing new beauty trends, whether a new haircut or making some autumnal switches in our makeup bags. In beauty, September carries the same energy as a new academic term.

For many, school photo day immortalised the best (but mostly the worst) in our beauty discoveries at school. At 13, I vividly remember curling just the front sections of my hair with my GHD straighteners, applying four coats of two different Rimmel and Maybelline mascaras and overplucking my left eyebrow with tweezers stolen from my mum's makeup bag the morning of photo day. By the time I sat down in front of the mottled blue photo screen, the curls had dropped despite copious amounts of hairspray, and my wonky brow looked extra surprised as the photographer chirped, "Say cheese!"

Nearly two decades on (and an eyebrow re-growth journey later), I've thankfully learned most of my beauty lessons. That being said, I often yearn for that sense of experimentation during school years, and the novelty of discovering new beauty products or trying a hairstyle for the first time. And with the arrival of autumn, in my opinion, there is no better time to try something new. There are both benefits and fun to be had from a seasonal hair switch-up, or shaking up the uniform of our makeup bags. So, notepads at the ready; ahead, we're championing back-to-school beauty, with three school-inspired looks alongside tips and tricks from the pros to inspire your beauty routine for autumn. Class is in session.

Lesson One: A Study in Blush

First on autumn's curriculum, blusher. Specifically, A fresh-faced glow you'd have from a morning darting around the hockey pitch, or locking eyes with your crush in the year above in the school corridor. Rather than placing blusher high up on the cheekbones, which we've become accustomed to over recent years, experiment with a lower placement. Not only does it feel modern and fresh, but the makeup trend gives youthful playfulness that brings a healthy glow to your complexion. "Going into autumn, I tend to veer from that dewy, bronzed summer skin, and lean into a more velvety satin skin finish," says makeup artist Faye Bluff. "I also tend to push the cheek placement back, gently sculpting and highlighting from the ears forward, rather than the sun-kissed bronzers through the centre of the face," she says.

The Homework: Swap your cream blush for a powder formula, which gives the complexion a more realistic, skin-like flush, and focus the placement lower on the cheeks. Here, Bluff used Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Matte Bouncy Blush in Thriving (£26) and Grateful (£26), and Violette_FR Plume Blush in Rose Fumé (£35). Both have a plush texture that lends a healthy glow to the apples of your cheeks.

Extra-Curricular Credit: Autumn hair needn't require a drastic hair colour transformation or haircut. Instead, it can be as simple as switching your parting or adding hair accessories to your style, says hairstylist Masayoshi Fujita. "I think the easiest thing is simply changing your hair parting. There’s no real risk, but it can completely change the feeling of your hairstyle," he says. "I’d also recommend trying some new hair accessories, like clips or scrunchies in a different colour. It’s a really simple way to refresh your look without making a big change." Miu Miu's pink hair clips are both chic and delightfully nostalgic.

Lesson Two: Giving Lip

Whilst we might have been subjected to uniform rules at school, autumn feels like an apt time to go forth with a distinctively rebellious spirit. If a bright, glossy lip would have landed you straight in detention at school, then take this as your sign to try it again. "I’m excited about makeup feeling a bit more individual again. I love seeing texture, colour and imperfection rather than everyone chasing the same hyper-perfect skin or identical lip shape," says Bluff.

For hair, we're following suit, embracing our natural texture in all its glory. "Hair is a form of personal expression. So rather than following one specific hair trend, I’m more interested in people expressing who they are—their background and their own character," says Fujita. "The fashion industry is embracing the rawness and natural character of hair rather than making it look too stiff or overly controlled," he says

The Homework: Go all out with bright, juicy persimmon or berry-toned lip gloss for a lacquered finish. Here, Bluff used Gucci Rouge à Lèvres Voile Lipstick in Agatha Orange (£40) and Gucci Gloss à Lèvres Plumping Lip Gloss in Sadie Coral (£36), with Kiko Milano Smart Fusion Lip Pencil in Lively Pink (£5) for a bright pop of colour.

Extra-Curricular Credit: Work with your natural hair texture, enlisting the help of curl creams or texturising mists to enhance its natural movement. "I wanted to keep both looks quite dry and natural, so I didn’t use much product," says Fujita. "I used a small amount of Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist (£29) through the ends of the hair, and a little Schwarzkopf Professional Osis+ Shine Spray (£17) on the top. I also used GHD Perfect Ending Hairspray (£15) at the beginning to control and hold the shape," he says.

Lesson Three: Colour Theory

The final lesson of the term? To play with colourful eyeshadow again. After seasons of bare lids and no mascara on the runways, for A/W 26, we're finally seeing colourful eyeshadows once again. From painterly daubs of apple green on the lids at Acne Studios to sparkling silver at Chanel, now's the time to try those rule-breaking hues. But you needn't have the skills of an MUA or an A* in GCSE art to get involved. "A wash of olive or taupe using your finger feels much more modern than a perfectly blended smoky eye," says Bluff. And if you're not ready for saturated shades, you can still tap into the mood. "For eyes, introduce more of those traditional autumnal tones, but keep the application quite undone," she says.

The Homework: Look to sheer washes of colour in vibrant tones, but don't stress about the application. One rule to break? "The idea that makeup has to be 'perfect'," says Bluff. "Perfection, symmetry and over-analysed colour theory is boring. Great makeup looks best when it sits alongside your features and becomes an extension of your character. Not an overworked, technically 'perfect' stamp on top," she says. Take your pick from Chanel's Les 9 Ombres in The New Singular (£130), or go for a solo shadow, such as Kiko Milano's Water Shadow in Violet (£12).

Extra-Curricular Credit: Once you've curated your autumn makeup bag, look to simple swaps to keep your makeup feeling modern. "Once you have your tried-and-trusted makeup 'uniform' down, you can start to play with changes in colour or texture. Burgundy mascara is my current favourite switch-out for a subtle autumnal pop," says Bluff.

Whilst I've stayed true to my blonde balayage for years now, everyone around me seems desperate to switch up their shade. From deep brunettes to striking copper hues, there are lots of autumnal hair colour trends to choose from, but as a beauty editor, I'm keen to know what new shades are taking over this season. So, I thought it was only right to go straight to the experts.

I asked not one, not two, but three of Hershesons' top hair stylists, and they all weighed in on this autumn's biggest hair colour trends. From classic colours reimagined to striking new hues that will be most requested in salons this season, there are so many stylish hair colours to choose from that it's even convincing me to book an appointment.

6 of the Biggest Autumn Hair Colour Trends 2026

1. Amber-Veiled Blonde

First up, this stunning "amber-veiled" blonde hue. "This is perfect for naturally darker blondes and brunettes," says James Samuel, colourist at Hershesons Belgravia. "[It features] scattered, softly defined pieces of a rich, intense golden shade. This gives a dimensional finish that looks luxe." If you went brighter for summer but want to tone your blonde hair down a little bit for the autumn months, I think this trend is perfect.

2. Toasted Copper

It wouldn't be autumn without a striking copper shade, and toasted copper is the one to watch this season. "[This is] a muted red brown combing depth and rich tone," explains Samuel. "An intentional deep bronze tone that’s subtle and understated."

3. Naked Blonde

Another blonde hair trend I am currently loving is "naked blonde". "[Think] hair that matches your skin: seamless, flattering shades that feel custom-made," says Nicole Kahlani, colourist at Hershesons Fitzrovia. "For textured hair, favour honey blondes and dark caramels—warm, curl‑friendly tones over icy platinum. Deeper/olive skin suits fudge, caramel and burnt terracotta [shades], whilst fair skin looks best in muted, runway‑soft versions."

4. "Greige" Brunette

According to Kahlani, this season, mousy blonde is getting its moment. "Think Mia Goth," she says. "A grey‑metal finish, soft ends and barely‑there dimension. It's perfect for a bleach break — subtle shimmer or a touch of brightness keeps it fresh without going full brunette."

"[Sandy blonde] is the perfect seasonal transition for brighter blondes wanting to soften their colour and embrace something a little more dimensional," says Hannah Gayle, colourist at Hershesons Belgravia. "Think sandy, creamy tones with added depth and richness, creating a beautifully lived-in blonde that feels warmer and more luxurious for the colder months."

6. Deep Brunette

Last but not least, let's talk about this deep brunette hue. "It’s no surprise that glossy, richer brunettes are having their moment again," says Gayle. "[This is] the perfect transition into autumn, embracing deeper chocolate and chestnut tones, elevated with beautiful dimension, depth and a luxurious, glass-like shine."

We're officially in autumn. And as a beauty editor, my favourite season may be summer, but when it comes to beauty trends, autumn is by far the season that I favour. I get particularly excited at this time of the year, because now is the time that autumn hair trends begin to announce themselves. You see, September has that specific back-to-school energy that begs us to finally book in for an overdue haircut, or perhaps try a new hair colour to welcome us into autumn. And even if you're not in the mood for a big hair transformation, some clever styling tweaks with hair tools or hair accessories can instantly bring your look into the new season.

So what autumn hair trends is 2026 bringing? I spoke to the hairstylists and hair colourists from Hershesons to find out what we'll all be booking in for at the salon, as well as the products to make sure you step into autumn with your best hair of the year.

1. Layered Cuts

Chop chop—autumn is the perfect time to try a new haircut. Not just to remove the dead ends from summer, but opting for a layered hairstyle will provide your hair with the bounce and swish many of us often crave at this time of the year. "Layers are becoming more defined and intentional this season. Rather than lots of wispy, disconnected layers, Autumn/Winter is about maintaining a stronger perimeter through the lengths while using more dynamic face-framing pieces to create movement," says Nataliia Bumford, hairstylist at Hershesons. "The result is hair that feels fuller and more structured, but still has softness and bounce. One of the key styling details is an inward flip through the ends, giving layers a subtle '90s finish," she says. I'm taking Gigi Hadid's flicky, face-framing layers straight to the salon.

2. '90s Updos

"The classic ’90s updo is back," says Bumford. However, you don't need expert skills to achieve these updos, which she tells me are stripped of anything overly complicated. "Ponytails, braids, French twists and minimalist buns are all having a moment, with the emphasis on polished simplicity. These styles feel refined rather than formal and work particularly well with a strong centre or side parting and a glossy finish," she says.

3. The Bixie

Gracie Abrams's bixie cut has been tempting me to go for a short haircut, and Bumford predicts that we'll see a lot more of this bob-pixie cut hybrid going into autumn. The bixie is evolving for Autumn/Winter, becoming more structured in shape while remaining soft around the edges. Rather than an ultra-short, severe crop, the focus is on elongated front pieces, softer sides and expressive fringe shapes. Micro fringes work particularly well, whilst heavier, bouncy bangs that sit around the bridge of the nose create a more dramatic effect," she says. "The beauty of the bixie is its flexibility: it can be worn sleek and glossy for a sharper finish, or textured and airy for something more undone." Talk about a versatile haircut.

4. Nude Hair Colour

Rather than a handful of specific hair colour trends dominating this autumn, instead, we're seeing a shift to more natural hair colour that's tailored to your hair and complexion. "As a colourist, the art lies in choosing the perfect shade for each individual," says Nicole Kahlani, consultant colourist at Hershesons. "For instance, with textured hair, warm honey tones reminiscent of the ’90s and early 2000s, seen on icons like Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Tyra Banks and Ciara, are making a comeback. Instead of going for ultra-platinum shades, opting for honey blondes and dark caramels allows the natural integrity of textured hair to shine through while preserving its curl pattern," she says. "In essence, the skin-tone-matching trend, what I call nude blonde, revolves around minimal dimension and subtlety, embracing colour placement that looks natural. An overall muted tone paired with gentle, almost invisible highlights creates the illusion of a more authentic colour."

5. Gothic Waves

A week hasn't passed where I've not thought about Margot Robbie's Wuthering Heights waves from earlier this year, and Bumford predicts we'll see more of these gothic yet romantic waves returning for autumn. "The look has a vintage, romantic quality, with movement concentrated around the face rather than throughout the entire head. It works particularly well with longer fringes and ’90s-inspired cuts," she says. "The key is keeping the rest of the hair relatively soft and understated, allowing the face-framing wave to create the impact." Use a hair waver to create tumbling waves, or use hair straighteners to create S-waves and soft bends in the hair.

6. Fringes

Fringes are an enduring autumn hair trend that reliably returns every single year, and they're a great way to switch up your hairstyle without committing to a major change. "Bangs are the universal add-on trend for Autumn/Winter, working across bobs, pixies, bixies and longer layered cuts. They offer an easy way to completely change the personality of a haircut without committing to a major change in length," says Bumford, who is seeing baby bangs, side-swept bangs, soft cowboy bangs and the Birkin fringe returning in the salon. "The fringe is almost becoming an accessory in its own right. It’s one of the easiest ways to make an existing haircut feel completely new," she says.

I've always had frizz-prone hair. But as my hair texture has become coarser and wavier in my adult years, I've been even more susceptible to a halo of frizz and flyaways around my crown. I have coarse, wiry hairs in places which, much to my annoyance, often stick out the top of my hair as soon as there is a hint of moisture in the air. Of course, there are remnants of the minimalist and effortless moods we've seen previously (take note of the absence of bold blusher this season); however, even the more out-there trends remain completely wearable. If you're in need of some hair, makeup and nail inspiration for the new season, scroll on for the defining Autumn/Winter 2026 beauty trends that you won't be able to wait to try.

1. Barely-There Blush

Bold blush has been dominating our feeds and makeup bags and most new launches for the best part of the decade so far, but this season, we're seeing a more subdued look emerging on our cheeks. In fact, it's barely there. Instead of brightly painted cheeks, the models at Victoria Beckham, Fendi and Altuzzarra had delicate, natural flushes that you'd see from a brisk walk on the first cold day of autumn.

At Ralph Lauren, the blusher placement was lower on the cheek; replicating softly windswept cheeks feels more authentic than the sculpting blusher placements we've seen that sit higher on the cheekbones. At Victoria Beckham, makeup artist Lucia Pica drew inspiration from the gentle flushes in the portraits by artist Tamara de Łempicka. “The skin remains beautifully transparent and perfected, with a gentle touch of pink on the cheeks that brings a fresh, unexpected warmth to the complexion," she says.

2. Great Lengths

It's undeniable that short haircuts and bobs have been dominating the fashion set of late, but if the A/W26 shows are anything to go by, now may be the time to grow your hair out long. We saw waist-skimming pre-raphaelite lengths finished with plaited accents at Chloe and Acne Studios, whereas the hair looks at Patrick McDowell and Holzweiler showcased long, buoyant curls in all their halo-like glory. The common thread is that each show enhanced the models' natural texture.

Hairstylist Anthony Turner explained how he achieved the effortless wavy lengths at Chloé. "The hair itself feels very weather. It's mountainous, it's windy, it's sunny, she's making her way through all of the elements," he says. "A lot of the girls have naturally very curly hair, so we're using the Dyson Supersonic R Hairdryer (£450) with the diffuser on the end and making [the curls] even more. For the girls with really long hair, we've braided them, taken the braids out and then brushed them."

3. Eyeshadow Abundance

After seasons of bare lids and the omission of any mascara from the lashes, A/W26 is heralding the triumphant return of bold eye makeup once more. From holographic silver dusted on both the lids and the hair at Chanel to metallic purple smouldering the eyes at Carolina Herrera, now is the time to pull out the shimmers and glitters that have been waiting in the wings inside your eyeshadow palette.

At Acne Studios, the eyes were a study in colour, with bright smudges of apple green and electric blue winged from the model's sockets, but if you prefer something more subdued, take inspiration from the makeup at Tolu Coker, which saw models with hazy washes of blue, spanning from smoked petrol blue to powdery hues. Either way, it's time to dust off those eyeshadow brushes and get creative.

4. Nail Renaissance

At several shows in past seasons, we've become accustomed to seeing bare nail-inspired looks with sheer washes of pink backstage—or even nothing at all. However, the A/W26 shows welcomed back nail art and shimmering shades in all their glimmering glory. Long almond nails adorned with aura nail art and reverse French tips featured at Christian Cowan and Harris Reed, whilst bold blues were painted on the nails at Proenza Schouler. But perhaps the most mesmerising of all were the jewel-like nails at Chanel.

"In and amongst the classic pieces of the Chanel A/W26 collection, the clothes and accessories had an element of fantasy; the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly," says Ama Quashie, the key session manicurist behind the looks. "So for the nails I tapped into my favourite elements of insect and bug colourings, choosing a palette that touched on iridescent and subtle shimmers," she says. "It feels like globally we’ve collectively and individually had a hard couple of years, definitely some more than others. In a time where we’re being stripped of so much, fantasy and escapism, even on the smallest canvas, remind us of the simple joy of beauty."

5. Parting Shift

Perhaps the easiest trend to adopt from the Autumn/Winter 2026 shows is switching your parting. We saw deep side partings and swooping side fringes all over the runways this season, so take this as your sign to switch from a middle part. It's a great way to boost volume for finer hair, too.

Hairstylist Anthony Turner created a sleek side-parted style for the Victoria Beckham show, explaining: “We wanted the hair to feel effortless and feminine but still refined. There’s a strong side parting which gives the look structure, but the overall feeling is relaxed and slightly undone—almost like the girls have already been to the after-show party," he says. "It’s simple, elegant hair with a little bit of personality and ease.”

6. Smoked Eyes

The smoky eye is a timeless Autumn/Winter makeup trend; however, it was particularly prevalent on the runways this season in a whole spectrum of smouldering shades. At Connor Ives, Dominic Skinner, director of makeup artistry for MAC UKI, drew inspiration from femme fatales of the '60s, with an '80s twist of garage door eyeshadow, generously applied all over the lids and up to the brow bone. At Hermès, the eyes were framed in nocturnal shades of deep green-grey and midnight blue, whilst at Rabanne, the effect was softer but mesmerising with watercolour washes of burnt umber buffed all over on the upper and lower lids. And if you're feeling bold, you could even channel Bella Hadid's smudgy, sooty kohl-lined eyes at Prada. Get your eyeliners and eyeshadows at the ready.

I’ve written extensively over the years about my rather complex relationship with my hair, and how it’s only now that I’m in my thirties that I’ve really learned to truly embrace it in its natural form. Now, on wash day, I can say that I really love how my hair looks. When my strands are freshly-washed, conditioned and styled (and as an air-dry loyalist I say styled in the loosest sense of the word) my loose curls and waves have definition and bounce and make me wonder why I ever complain about my hair. By day two, however, it’s a different story. I usually wake up to find that some of my curls have flattened, whilst others have become frizzy, dry or lost their shape altogether. And by day three, despite my hair not really needing a wash still, I’ve usually reached the point where lathering up again is my only option unless I want to tie it all up and avoid looking at it.

What Is a Curl Refresh Spray?

“A curl refresh spray is designed to reinvigorate and enhance curly to wavy hair types, helping you get an extra day or so out of your styling without having to wash, condition and dry your hair from wet,” explains Issie Churcher, creative director at STIL Salon. And while curly girls will be used to having a misting bottle of water on hand to help with styling second and third day curls, using a dedicated curl refresh spray does have added benefits. “They contain ingredients that are not only helpful at wetting down the hair, but they also provide a light conditioning benefit,” says Churcher. “This can help to define and re-sculpt curls, while also adding shine and vitality back into the hair.”

How to Use a Curl Refresh Spray

“For best results, start by lightly misting in sections, working down the hair from roots to the mid-length and ends,” says Churcher. She recommends avoiding the roots if you have a finer texture to prevent them from looking oily. “Depending on your curl type, a wide-tooth comb or your fingers can be useful for smoothing down the hair, or a light scrunch can be effective at allowing the product to disperse and coat the hair evenly.”

Celebrity hair stylist Sam McKnight MBE suggests twisting your hair around your fingers to really enhance the curl after using a curl refresh spray. “For tighter coils, they can be used to style your twists or braid-outs by simply misting evenly through hair and styling. Allow hair to dry before unravelling for a softer, elongated look without the frizz,” he explains. You can even add a little heat with a diffuser if you want to speed up the drying process.

The trend cycle has been noticeably condensed in recent years, compressing years- or decades-long movements into monthlong micro-moments that lose steam as fast as they're conjured. We see it across fashion and beauty, but one category that never seems to change as swiftly as the latest TikTok makeup aesthetic or Pinterest fad is hair. Hairstyles still move at a slower pace. After all, people usually change up their mane seasonally for a fresh start more than anything. But there's one hairstyle we beauty editors have been keeping our eyes on as it gains momentum, and that, my friend, is bangs.

Whether you've watched in awe or horror as Y2K side bangs began to reenter the style stratosphere or pined after Daisy Edgar-Jones's cool-girl curtain bangs, it's hard to ignore the onslaught of fringe inspiration we've seen over the last few years. When I started looking closer at the tastemakers who define future fashion moments, one thing became clear: Feathered, flippy whisper fringe is the next biggest hair trend on the horizon, and celeb hairstylists would have to agree.

What Is A Whisper Fringe?

In short, whisper fringe is the piecey curtain bangs you've likely seen on celebs as of late—the longer kind that you can swoop away from the face like Miley Cyrus and Zoë Kravitz or full-send Gen Z side bangs à la Bella Hadid and Mika Abdalla.

"I like to think of this as the noncommittal bang," celebrity hairstylist and brand founder Benjamin Mohapi tells Who What Wear. "It's so versatile. You kind of have it, but you can also kind of don't. It's perfect for a world where constant reinvention is the norm and attention spans are so limited." Whether worn as feathery, light curtain bangs or piecey side bangs, these face-framing snippets allow you to reinvent your fringe every single day—a necessity for the fashion-forward folks who yearn to stay ahead of the curve.

"I feel like 2026 has really been the year of the curtain fringe," says celebrity hairstylist Marylle Koken. Whilst the stylist doesn't expect this trend to go anywhere just yet, she does see people taking a lighter approach to the cut rather than going for a Dakota Johnson–thick shear. "This autumn, we're going to see clients become a little more daring. The fringe is becoming softer, more personalised, and really tailored to each person's face shape and natural texture," she explains. "What I'm seeing behind the chair is that clients aren't asking for one trend anymore. They want a haircut that works for them."

Forget about cut-and-dry trends. Real clients want high-functioning versatility that works for their day-to-day lives, which means finding a low-maintenance style that suits their personal taste. "It's less about creating a perfect blowout and more about creating a beautiful shape that enhances how their hair naturally moves," Koken adds. "That's where, I think, fringe is heading this autumn: more customised, more effortless, and designed to work with the person instead of against them."

Soft Swoops and Side Bangs

Whilst millennials may style whisper fringe like curtain bangs, Gen Zers are taking things a step further by swooping their wispy bangs over to one side—paying homage to the early aughts. (Millennials aren't quite ready to revisit them yet.) "I think the move to the side is long overdue," muses Mohapi. "Playing with bangs, no matter how slight, is a great way to start reframing the face." They can be as whisker thin as Kravitz's romantic tendrils and still make an impact.

If you crave a more voluminous look, take a page out of Abdalla's book. The Off Campus star wore her thick curtain bangs pulled and pinned to the side in a messy-chic updo fashioned by celebrity hair and makeup artist Ruby Neves, and I've never saved anything to my autumn hair board faster. Mohapi, for one, is all for the voluminous-bangs movement.

"As soon as the bangs come into focus, you can start flipping the top over and giving yourself more volume without changing the overall look," says Mohapi. Think round-brushing the opposite way for extra volume or pinning them where necessary, like Abdalla. "Once autumn takes hold, we'll start to see more side sweeping and flipping, but bangs will continue to be worked into the look," he adds.

Koken thinks that there are simpler, more personal reasons driving this trend: People want styling options that will give them their time back in the morning. "Some people are growing out a heavier fringe and naturally transitioning into something softer. Others want the versatility of still having a fringe without committing to a full, blunt bang," she explains. "The thinner, piecier fringe gives you options. You can wear it parted in the middle, sweep it to the side or tuck it away depending on your mood." In short, people want styles that feel easily adaptable rather than a high-maintenance cut that requires daily blow-dries, rollers, and hair spray.

As we approach the end of summer, I'm getting that all familiar seasonal itch to switch up my hair colour. Whilst I'm excited to try some autumn hair colour trends (I'm currently tempted by a deep, icy espresso brunette hue), I'm not ready to commit to a drastic hair colour transformation quite yet. So, I've been scrolling my feeds and saving some summer-to-autumn transitional hair colour trends for my next salon visit, ready to tie me over until we get into the full swing of autumn.

If you're currently a light brunette, then opting for a shade or two deeper in a cooler tone is a great way to welcome in autumn without feeling too dark. Take Zendaya's glossy malted brunette shade that she's been wearing at the Spider-Man and The Odyssey this summer. It's a cool, mid-toned brunette that looks so glossy and expensive. This can easily be achieved with a semi-permanent gloss in the salon, or a colour-depositing hair mask if you want to test out the new shade at home first.

2. Suede Blonde

Just look at this stunning hair colour. Gigi's suede blonde is the perfect shade for blondes wanting to transition their hair colour from summer to autumn. Note the carefully placed blonde balayage that melts in smoothly from her dark blonde base. It feels multi-dimensional and suitably autumnal whilst making your hair look like you've just returned from a late-summer holiday. I've never been more tempted to go blonde.

3. Ribbon Brunette

Her warm chestnut brunette hair colour is given dimension with ribbon-like swirls of caramel highlights that only add more gloss to that multi-dimensional shine. 4. Sandy Blonde

Bella Hadid's sandy hair colour may just be the coolest late-summer blonde shade going. The dark brown root smudge melts into golden, sandy tones that feel perfect for blondes at this time of the year. It's not so bright that it looks too summery, but won't look out of place come the start of autumn either. It looks great paired with some surfer-inspired, beachy S-waves like Bella's.

5. Teddy Bear Brunette

Aside from her stunning lob haircut, Hailey Bieber's hair colour has a very natural and healthy-looking glow, which has both subtle cool and warmer tones that make it look plush and velvet-like. I have a confession to make. Despite being a beauty editor with a cupboard full of hair products at my disposal, I'm actually pretty low-maintenance when it comes to my hair. It's not so much of a cream in the typical sense, but more of a thick, milky liquid that leaves my waves feeling naturally tousled and smoothed, without the frizz," says SEO writer Ava Gilchrist. "A little goes a long way, and you have to shake well before use, but it instantly makes me look more put-together than if I let my hair dry on its own."

If you find that most hairstyling creams are too heavy, then this lightweight, milky cream comes in a mist format that's easy to distribute through your hair without weighing your lengths down. "I will say I’m a little OTT when it comes to skin and haircare products—more is always good! Though there are a few I move around in rotation, the one product that I will never replace is the Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Primer," says junior branded content editor Humaa Hussain. "It has seriously kept my hair from heat damage (I’ve been straightening it almost every day since I was 12, so I can only imagine what state it would have been in otherwise). I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you're severely out of the loop if you didn't have at least one conversation about Zendaya's flowing chocolate braid at the New York City premiere of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey—not only because of her impossibly long locks fashioned by celebrity hairstylist Coree Moreno but also because of her supremely shiny brunette strands that flashed caramel in the light.

"I think we're moving into a season where healthy, shiny hair is the biggest trend," muses Ballance. "Rather than lots of high-contrast dimension, we're seeing richer, more polished brunettes that look expensive because of how healthy they appear." Ballance also singles out Zendaya's castmate Anne Hathaway and her uniform iced-chocolate waves: "It's not about obvious highlights anymore; it's about creating a luxurious, shiny finish that makes the hair look incredibly healthy."

Inky Espresso

Brunette is a spectrum of umber shadows and golden streaks, but one of the most alluring shades of brown you can try this autumn is an inky espresso. Giannetos calls the hue "romantic and timeless," spotlighting how fabulous it looks when worn down or pinned up in a chic knot, as shown in this recent look sculpted on Demi Moore.

"Instead of adding lots of brightness, I love the idea of placing just a few delicate highlights while keeping everything within the same shades. Your eye still picks up movement and dimension, but nothing looks obviously lighter."

To channel Tookes's feathery highlights, ask for two to three shades lighter than your natural colour in very small sections. "The result is a brunette that has depth, softness, and shine while still looking completely natural," says Ballance.

How to Maintain Brunette Hair Colour

"Healthy hair is always the best hair," says Ballance. To preserve the vitality of your colour, celebrity stylists suggest adding a few new products to your regular rotation. "Use a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, incorporate a nourishing hair mask once a week, and keep up with regular gloss appointments to maintain richness and shine as the colour fades," Ballance instructs.

If you're not sure where to start, Ballance suggests asking your colourist if there's a specific at-home treatment you can do to supplement your salon treatment between appointments. "The healthier the hair, the more reflective it is, and that's what makes every brunette colour look its best," he concludes.

So, I've taken to abandoning my hair tools altogether, and instead letting my hair air-dry. I have naturally wavy hair, and I've always loved how a day at the beach or a dip in the ocean magically enhances my waves. I'm lucky enough to live by the coast; however, I long to recreate that salty, tousled texture when I'm working from home or commuting into London. And that's where salt sprays come in. They're great for enhancing your natural texture or giving a piecey texture to curls or waves created with a curling wand or hair waver.

What Are Salt Sprays?

If you too crave that beachy look, then salt sprays are the key to achieving that effortless look—no day at the beach or hair waver required. "Natural sea salt enhances and defines soft, tousled texture, " says celebrity hairstylist and founder Sam McKnight MBE. "When misted into dry or wet hair, salt sprays define existing texture and enhance and accentuate waves and curls," he says.

How to Use Salt Sprays

Salt sprays work for most hair types; however, they will only work on hair with existing texture, such as waves or curls. "They won’t create texture that isn’t there already. It enhances, accentuates and defines natural texture," says McKnight.

"If hair has a natural wave or curl, go straight in and mist into wet hair, let it dry naturally. Alternatively, you can mist onto dry hair in even sections. Just scrunch with your fingers and let it air dry or diffuse slightly for added body," he says. To keep it feeling beachy—not crunchy—McKnight advises sectioning your hair first. "[The] best way is to separate hair in sections and mist from roots to ends. Be careful not to saturate the [dry] hair; it should still feel dry," he says.

Sundaze Sea Spray has been my go-to this summer for a number of reasons. Firstly, it enhances hair texture without the dreaded stickiness you can get with some salt sprays. However, it also contains UV protection to shield your hair from the sun, making it a great one to throw in your bag for beach days to prevent damage or colour fade. A couple of spritzes on wet hair go a long way to boost waves and curls whilst adding a tousled texture, so go easy. You can also use it on dry hair if you want to refresh the texture further. 2. Ouai Wave Spray

You know how wavy hair is enhanced by a dip in the sea? This is that salt-kissed effect in a bottle. A couple of spritzes through damp or dry hair before scrunching enhance waves without any crunchiness whilst boosting volume and hold. It can also be used on straight hair if you want to enhance curls created with a curling wand. This is one of my favourites I reach for when I want to air-dry my hair whilst enhancing my waves without any heat. Oh, and it smells incredible with its rosy scent.

What Is a Dry Shampoo Mist?

So, what is this product, and how does it differ from your regular dry shampoo? "[Dry shampoo] mists often feel weightless on the hair whilst still delivering a light cleanse," explains Hollie Rose Clarke, top hairstylist and Living Proof stylist ambassador. "If you are looking for a heavier-duty dry shampoo, you may find you enjoy an aerosol format more."

Whilst dry shampoo mists can be used on all hair types (I personally find my thick hair loves them), Clarke tells me that they can be especially good for finer hair. "Those with fine hair may enjoy a mist over aerosol, as it will feel more weightless in the hair." Plus, mists are more invisible and don't tend to leave any residue.

How to Use a Dry Shampoo Mist

Whilst each product will come with its own specific instructions, I wanted to ask Clarke for her top application tips. "Like everything with haircare, less is often more, and I always recommend starting small and building up if you feel you need more coverage," explains Clarke. "Shake the bottle well, section the hair and then spray directly into the roots, holding the bottle four to six inches away from the hair. The hair at first will appear slightly wet, but don’t be alarmed, as this dries down quickly by massaging the roots."
