The new-generation Gucci Play Watch honours the debut creation. It features a bangle-like strap, round face and interchangeable bezels, much like the '80s classic. However, there are subtle differences. The new version boasts a slightly larger face that measures 28mm, a thicker strap with hinges to make it easier to slip onto the wrist, whereas the original has a fixed slimline bangle. The fastening has also been modified; the click-ball back replaces the classic hook closure.

The gold-plated stainless-steel watch still features the distinct interchangeable bezel faces. However, the material has been refined; it's now made of durable ceramic rather than the former featherlight—yet fragile—acrylic. The new faces have a slight pearlescent shimmer, whereas the original bezels are a bold opaque colour.

Whilst we're on the topic of faces, the new iteration of the Gucci Play Watch has fewer bezels (seven instead of the original 11). Thanks to my mum's safekeeping, I know the original included white, black, lilac, deep purple, light blue, navy blue, burgundy, yellow, pink and red, as well as Gucci's signature green with a red-stripe bezel. The new version only includes the signature green-and-red stripe, as well as block green, red, black, white, lilac and navy blue.

Fast forward 40 years from the first launch, and Gucci officially re-released the Play Watch in November 2025, thanks to rising demand for the original. Of course, it would be remiss for me to boast in such broad strokes about the affordability of products that will still set you back hundreds of pounds. It’s not to say that these pieces are inexpensive by any means of the word, but more accessible than the higher end of the spectrum, which can sometimes reach into the thousands. Better still, these are pieces that will still hold their investment for years to come, knowing that you can invest a small amount of money in and still reap the benefits should you ever choose to part ways with the item later down the line.

Over the past year, luxury has been defined by a nostalgic mood, and it’s already laid the foundations for 2026. One of the most defining features of luxury designs is the heritage that they hold, and now, designer brands are leaning into this by digging through the archives to celebrate their history with rediscovered icons. Last year, we saw the return of a series of heritage bags, from Chloé’s Paddington to Balenciaga’s Le City. Every year, alongside my admittedly over-ambitious list of New Year’s resolutions sits an equally hopeful fashion wish list for the year ahead. Writing it down has become something of a ritual; part planning, part manifestation. Whilst we await the countdown to 2026, it’s time for a little reflection. Looking back at the previous year, a host of exciting trends arose, newly ingratiated It bags settled into their titles, and a selection of classic buys have spent the past 300-odd days proving their timeless appeal. Now, I’ve spent a few hours sifting through the data to uncover the best-selling pieces of 2025.

As a shopping editor, I spend a considerable amount of time analysing data. Truthfully, it’s a lot more fun than it sounds. I get a certain amount of insight into our readers’ actual shopping habits, from their favourite cashmere jumpers to the investment bags they’ve saved up for. Here at Who What Wear UK, we love a recommendation, so putting this data to use, I can share the actual pieces that have come directly from your (and our) baskets.

Most of the pieces on this best-seller list won’t be surprising. As we spend day in and day out celebrating the best buys around, you may be well acquainted with some of these hero buys already. It wouldn’t be fashion without a new notable trend arriving at the very tail end of the year. On the heels of Matthieu Blazy’s masterful Métiers d'art 2026 show for Chanel, Demna has delivered his sophomore offering at Gucci and made a case for this signature silhouette to make its return: cigarette trousers.

Reimagining the Italian house’s codes through a time-warping lens, the creative director presented a look book that imagined a “show that never happened”, as the luxuriate put it in a press release. However, from the very initial glimpse of Alex Consani dressed in a bubblegum pink suit set for the opening look, it was immediately clear that whilst this exact staging never occurred, it’s not far off from the slinky cuts and iconic designs made famous by Tom Ford during his tenure at the helm of the brand in the ‘90s.

To know the Texan-born multi-hyphenate is to be aware of his legendary oeuvre—plunging body-conscious silk tops that trim the naval worn by everyone from Amber Valetta to Madonna, a chianti-coloured velvet suit worn by Gwyneth Paltrow and campaigns that can only be described as erotic. But out of all of these silhouettes in his impressive sartorial vocabulary, it’s the humble cigarette trouser that remained the most overlooked. Well, that was until now.

For the uninitiated, cigarette trousers refer to a specific slim-fit shape that runs straight down the leg and resembles, as the name suggests, something you find in a packet of Marlboro Reds. The piece usually crops right at the ankle and is the direct antithesis to the slew of languid and relaxed bottoms like barrel-leg trousers and wide-leg pants that have reigned supreme.

Of course, it’s this context that makes us primed for the return of cigarette trousers. The past few months have been defined by a renewed interest in 2010s style tropes, including the Alexander McQueen skull scarf, Isabel Marant wedge trainers and the Celine New Luggage.

Topping it all off with a jumbo takeaway iced latte, the look was proof that you need not be intimidated by the name or tropes associated with the style. This fresh-off-the-runway bag has already been spotted on the shoulders of some seriously stylish celebs since debuting in Gucci's 2026 Cruise collection, and not only does it look like something the brand has plucked from its illustrious archive, but it is designed with the modern wearer in mind. Spacious enough for your daily haul of belongings and utilising a potent mix of Gucci's heirloom characteristics, the Giglio taps into this current desire for all things old school, but still exceedingly luxurious in style, attitude and practicality.

As a classic dresser, I truly believe in the art of curating a thoughtful and purposeful wardrobe and roster of accessories that you can rely on for years to come, without the worry of fading trends, seasonal fads and fleeting obsessions which fizzle fast. I’ve been hunting down my next luxury handbag purchase for a while, so I thought it best to give this new Gucci style a thorough test drive and review. Someone has to! I’m after the perfect bag to take me from office days to evenings out in the city, as well as to accompany many an off-duty weekend outfit. I spent a sunny Sunday in London with the latest iteration of the Gucci Giglio in suede to see if it lives up to its style credentials and celebrity fanfare. What Is the Gucci Giglio?

The Gucci Giglio is a brand-new handbag design, unveiled during Gucci's Cruise 2026 runway show, which took place in the brand's birthplace of Florence in May 2025. The show was hosted at Palazzo Settimanni, a 15th-century mansion which is home to the official Gucci archive. Lifting inspiration directly from said archive, the new Gucci Giglio has been imagined as an homage to the city of Florence, as well as to pay respect to the “giglio” (Italian for lily flower), which has been an emblem of the city since the Renaissance.

The Giglio features an all-over interlocking double-G monogram pattern, plus classic red and green striped webbing trims, recalling the Italian ancestry, equestrian legacy and fine-luggage heritage of the brand. It’s a large shopper shape with a rounded cut-out handle, which flows with the silhouette of the bag and its trim. This makes it wearable on the shoulder, in the crook of the arm or simply by holding the handle. Unstructured, with a soft, malleable feel, the Giglio feels plush, sumptuous and easy to grab and throw your daily items into.

It has a single hidden magnetic closure inside and is complemented with a detachable pouch in matching fabric for small, loose items. I chose to test-drive the Medium Brown GG iteration: a rich, nutty brown in a velvety-suede fabrication, lined with a cotton-canvas twill. The bag is available in sizes Large and Small (the Small also comes with a handy crossbody strap), as well as in other hues including beige, black and denim canvas, smooth black and dark-brown leather and, lastly, dark-blue suede monogram.

My Review of the Gucci Giglio

As far as iconic handbag labels go, Gucci has always been high up there. Having long been an admirer of the brand and owning a few of its styles over the years, I was excited to take this brand-new model for a spin. When I first saw the Giglio on the runway, what struck me initially was its all-over monogram, oversized shape and distinctive sporting stripes, all of which are synonymous with the brand. This potent mix of House codes means it is unmistakably and timelessly Gucci. I, for one, love these accents and how they add an expensive-looking, runway-inspired and vintage-leaning allure (my holy grail) to an otherwise understated outfit.

I took the Giglio on a Sunday-afternoon jaunt through London's ultra-stylish Marylebone neighbourhood, popping into shops, a café, public gardens and my favourite florist. For my outfit, I took cues from Sienna Miller and Suki Waterhouse, reaching for a classic pair of blue denim jeans, my trusty suede Gucci Horsebit loafers, a white tee and a cashmere crew neck, finished with a boxy green blazer and oversized aviators, from yes, you guessed it, Gucci. This sort of outfit is classic "me": tailored but casual, sharp but easy and could easily have been transported from, say, the '70s or '90s, but still stylish now and (I say, confidently) for years to come. The bag felt like a natural addition to this ensemble, adding a retro flair but aiding my busy, city-based, day-to-night needs.

Its oversized shape also harks back to the Y2K era of the "ludicrously capacious bag", seen on every starlet and It girl of the time (I'm looking at you, Paris, Nicole et al.), which, as a millennial, is one of my eternal style references. I also adore its maximalist-meets-minimalist charm. Yes, it's big, bold and a little bit head-turning, but it's also luxurious in texture, classic in colour and pattern and super practical. The big ol' fashion dial is slowly but surely swinging back to loud luxury, having been quiet for quite some time now. The Gucci Giglio sits in both camps quite confidently; I believe both pared-back dressers and those who like to style themselves more boldly can equally find common ground with this bag.

As someone with a lot of stuff and a desire to carry it with me at all times, seven days a week, the Giglio really does fit the bill. Holding my laptop, book, wallet, sunglasses case, AirPods and various other accoutrements, this bag really can house it all, and quite comfortably, too. The thick straps are reinforced with the webbed trim, so as much as the bag is relatively unstructured and light, it has a grab-and-go quality I appreciate. The straps allow for over-the-shoulder wear, which is great when you need to be hands-free. I also quite like the look of tucking the whole bag under the upper arm, and this is quite possible given how soft and supple it is. Otherwise, hanging from the crook of my arm felt natural, as did swinging the bag from the straps in one hand.

All in all, I really enjoyed my time with the Giglio. Its nostalgic charm, modern ease and everyday practicality tick so many boxes for me, and its colour and finishes will give my Monday-to-Friday looks an expensive edge, as well as my off-duty weekend 'fits. It's the kind of bag I know will work with dresses, much like on the runway, as well as suiting, separates, skirts and jeans. The house of Gucci has always pioneered individuality, cutting-edge style and progressive ideas in fashion, always through its classic, archival lens. This is a sentiment which allows for playful styling and constant re-invention with the Giglio; it's not a bag that takes itself too seriously, and I'd be excited to explore investing in this bag in the near future for a daily dose of iconic, timeless and heritage spirit, as well as endless styling possibilities.

Is the Gucci Giglio Worth It?

Competing with other luxury household names such as Prada, Chanel and Saint Laurent is no small feat. Luckily, Gucci has well over 100 years under its belt, with its first store opening in Florence way back in 1921. By today's standards, Gucci still reigns supreme, and with Demna Gvasalia (previously creative director at Balenciaga and co-founder of Vetements), now firmly in the driving seat, the fashion world is excited to see how he takes the heritage house forward, particularly with bags, shoes and leather goods—Gucci's defining calling cards.

In terms of the Giglio, you may be wondering if it's really worth the price tag. Remember, this is a luxury item, so careful consideration and thoughtful mulling over are necessary before parting with your hard-earned cash. The Large tote bags have a starting price of £1600 for the GG canvas, going up to £2170 for the suede colourways and £2470 for the full leather. The Small is a little gentler on the pocket, with all three canvas colourways offered at £1420.

Karl Lagerfeld's tenure at Chanel delivered so many iconic moments, and one of the most impressive shows in recent memory was staged at Paris's famous Grand Palais. Donatella Versace is undoubtedly one of the most legendary figures in fashion. For the House of Versace's spring/summer 2018 show, she honoured her late brother and House founder, Gianni, presenting a collection that played to his iconic prints, use of gold and sexy silhouettes; with a finale that saw a whole host of supermodels pay homage. Striding down the runway herself, Versace was joined by Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen, harking back to George Michael's hit song "Freedom! '90" and its accompanying music video, in which many of these supers featured. Nothing will ever come close to this heartfelt and special moment.

3. Jacquemus S/S 20

Simon Porte Jacquemus started his eponymous label in 2009, dedicated to his late mother. The virility of his designs skyrocketed him into mainstream popularity, with playful handbags, enormous hats and skin-revealing ready-to-wear. For his spring/summer 2020 show, the brand's 10th anniversary collection, Jacquemus staged a co-ed runway show within the lavender fields of the French countryside, a couple of miles from his childhood home. Models strutted down a seemingly endless carpet of fuchsia pink, flanked by rows of purple lavender—both hues are synonymous with the brand. Mixing colour-pop brights, muted neutrals, printed scenic landscapes and watercolour florals, the show and its collection were completely and utterly striking and cemented Jacquemus' place in the fashion, social and pop-culture spaces. Needless to say, we were tickled pink!

4. Loewe A/W 22

Since Jonathan Anderson took the creative director reins at Loewe in 2013, with a tenure lasting a whopping 11 years, things were never again the same. Embuing art, craft and high-concept design into all of his collections for the House, the Irish designer has not only become a (fashion) household name, but has managed to firmly place Loewe at the top of the list of the most desirable designer labels of now. For the brand's spring/ summer 2022 show, he employed surrealist shapes, extreme drapery, backwards-worn garments and high-shine metal breastplates. Accessories, too, tapped into pop-art themes, with heels resembling roses, birthday-cake candles and broken eggs. Not only was this collection extremely directional, forward-thinking and fun, but it was also super wearable. Kendall Jenner gave this it serious celebrity kudos when she was famously spotted in one of the jersey tank dresses, with an all-over digital print of fuzzy colours.

5. Miu Miu S/S 22

When Miu Miu launched its spring/summer 2022 collection, you couldn't walk a mile without seeing one of its looks on the cover of every magazine on the stands of your local newsagent or supermarket. The collection was applauded for its preppy suiting, poplin shirts, cable knits, pleated twill skirts and flashes of logo-adornded lingerie, many pieces of which were slashed and cut to show off abs, legs and undies, in typical bad-school-girl style. Mixing sexiness, structure, sportiness and pretty 3-D florals, this collection was a Miuccia classic. This is where the much-hyped New Balance sneaker collab was previewed, which has since become every influencer's favourite off-duty trainer of choice. Now, everyone, "Thank you, Mrs Prada!"

6. Bottega Veneta S/S 23

Matthieu Blazy had a brief but successful three-year stint at Bottega Veneta before moving to the powerhouse that is Chanel. His spring/summer 2023 show at Bottega was truly spectacular, tapping artist and architect Gaetano Pesce to craft a kaleidoscopic poured-resin floor and handmake around 400 unique chairs for guests, all of which have become collector's items. Some of the standout looks from the collection appeared quite simple and understated, but a closer look revealed many pieces crafted from soft, luxurious leather for a trompe-l'œil effect. Kate Moss's normcore outfit, consisting of a plaid shirt, white tank and jeans, also played with deception by tapping into the craving for quiet luxury at the time in an unexpected way. The look remains a mainstay on every fashion enthusiast's mood board to this day.

7. Gucci S/S 23

Only Alessandro Michele could send 68 pairs of identical twins down a runway. Yes, you read that correctly! Never one to miss an opportunity for theatricality and the wow-factor, Michele's time at Gucci was full of jaw-dropping moments that no one else could re-create if they tried (see the Aria, Love Parade and Cosmogonie collections). The Twinsburg show of spring/summer 2023 stunned guests and fans alike. Models took to the runway in typical Michele fashion (think decadent prints, pussy-bows, monogram handbags, '80s suiting and bucket-loads of sequins)—but double it. Only at the show's finale did the curtain rise to reveal the paired looks and their twin models, who came together in single file holding hands. Inspired by Michele's mother and her twin sister, this show was mesmerising and mind-bogglingly good.

8. Simone Rocha S/S 24

Simone Rocha debuted her eponymous line at London Fashion Week in September 2010. 15 years on, and the label is still one of the biggest, most exciting moments on the fashion month calendar, and always the hottest ticket in town. Known for her subversive yet pretty collections, full of pearl, ribbon and lace adornments, Rocha has become a celebrity favourite, with the likes of Alexa Chung, Bel Powley and Fiona Shaw lining up to wear her collections on the red carpet and have their turn on the runway for her. The spring/summer 2024 show featured pink roses throughout, some held by models and some sewn into the bodices of dresses. Sarah Jessica Parker wore a dress-and-coat ensemble from this very collection in an episode of And Just Like That..., further cementing Rocha's merit in the fashion sphere and wider public eye.

9. Maison Margiela S/S 24

Celebrated designer John Galliano's final show at Maison Margiela, after 10 years as creative director at the esteemed house, was the talking point of many a fashion and beauty group chat for weeks after it was presented. A little X-rated and a lot of exoticism (Galliano's potent combination), models danced, staggered and gingerly stepped through the underbelly of Paris's streets, inspired by the images of Hungarian–French photographer Brassaï. The haute couture spring/ summer 2024 collection featured corsets, sheer dresses and 1920s doll-like suits, with Pat McGrath's famous painterly makeup set with a spray lacquer to give a high-shine, glass-skin finish. Gwendoline Christie's marionette-like walk for the finale look was like poetry in motion. Truly unforgettable.

10. Saint Laurent S/S 25

Anthony Vaccarello has been nothing short of a hit-maker for Saint Laurent since his spring/summer 2017 debut, crafting a vision which is at once sexy, desirable and classic. It has become one of the most illustrious, trend-setting brands on the planet, and celebs and shoppers can't get enough. The spring/summer 2025 show meant serious business, with an array of sharp, exaggerated suits, complete with shirts, ties and '80s eyewear, resembling the brand's famed founder, Yves. Nostalgic but modern, dapper but wearable, stars such as Elsa Hosk and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have since been spotted wearing these ensembles, fresh from the runway. Bella Hadid's black suit-and-tie combo was a standout, serving classic power suit. Hot!

Much like the start of a school year, autumn marks the beginning of a new fashion year. It feels like a momentous reset, as the days start to cool, we prepare our wardrobes for the chilly months ahead, which will stick around until the first flowers bloom in spring. For some, the new season is denoted by the September equinox; for others, it's the first walk through crunching leaves. For me, it's signalled by my first sighting of a Gucci loafer. The small respite before the arrival of the new season is the perfect pause, allowing us to get ready for the upcoming change in weather and see how our wardrobes will adjust. Already, we've hunted down the capsule wardrobe pieces to see us through autumn 2025, assembled an edit of trench coats to battle the forecasted showers, and now I'm here to talk about my personal favourite aspect of entering a new season: the autumn 2025 It bag lineup.

Much like the school year, September feels like a reset in the fashion world. Our assembled wardrobes of cosy knitwear and tailoring will see us through the next three seasons, adjusted slightly for varied temperature changes. And alongside, the handbag switch-up occurs. Spotted in London last week, the actor paired the tan tote with her signature relaxed tailoring, instantly giving the bag that lived-in ease she does better than anyone. It’s Miller’s enduring style talent: the ability to make a brand-new piece look as though it’s been part of her wardrobe forever. Adding to its momentum, Dakota Johnson has also been spotted with the spacious tote, styling it in her own understated, polished way.

Daisy Edgar-Jones rarely misses when it comes to style and this week in New York she stepped out in a deceptively simple outfit that ticked off a handful of the season’s most-coveted trends and items.

Starting with a sleek foundation, the actor opted for a sleeveless black boat-neck top—understated yet elegant. Next, rather than leaning into the current obsession with baggy or flared denim, she chose a more directional silhouette: carpenter jeans. Daisy Edgar-Jones has strong memories tied to Italy. One of the most significant is the time she spent in a villa outside of Rome filming the final scenes of Normal People—the television show adapted from Irish author Sally Rooney's 2018 novel—which was released in 2020 and became the BBC's most streamed series with 62.7 million views. "That was my first time spending proper time in Italy," the actress shares with Who What Wear. "I just remember thinking, 'Oh my gosh, this is incredible.'"

Five years later, the 26-year-old actress returned to the shores of Italy for another big moment: as the new face of Gucci and its Gucci Lido campaign. Edgar-Jones arrived in the cliffside town of Sorrento to shoot the new Gucci Lido campaign with photographer Jim Goldberg alongside actors Aliocha Schneider and David Jonsson. The campaign is a celebration of summer, the storied charm of Italy's coastal lidos, and tranquil days spent on the Mediterranean coastline, capturing Edgar-Jones with the effortless cool of Jane Birkin in printed silk scarves, woven GG Marmont bags, and terry-cloth swimsuits primed for breezy summer days. Ahead, read our conversation with Daisy Edgar-Jones as she talks about summer packing, Normal People memories, and behind-the-scenes moments from her new campaign with Gucci.

How did your relationship with Gucci begin?

I've known about Gucci and loved the house since I was young enough to know about fashion. The history of the house I find so incredible, and I feel very lucky to get to work with them.

Now, you're the face of the new Gucci Lido campaign. Is there a specific piece or look from the campaign that you felt particularly connected to or excited to wear?

I loved the clothes in this Gucci campaign, but there was one particular look: a white shirt and white shorts with these beautiful sandals and this gorgeous bag. I absolutely loved that look. It felt very Jane Birkin, very effortless. There's also some beautiful loafers that I loved and some scarves. The whole world of the campaign, I just loved it.

The Gucci Lido campaign evokes the spirit of an Italian summer, highlighting a sense of escape and timeless glamour. Do you have any personal memories or favorite summer destinations in Italy that evoke similar feelings?

I felt so lucky to shoot the campaign in Sorrento, and I'd love to go back and spend some time there… When it comes to favourite memories and places in Italy, we shot the final couple of weeks of Normal People in this incredible villa just outside of Rome. It was one of my favourite couple weeks of filming ever. I went to the Amalfi Coast when I was very young, and I remember eating so much lemon sorbet and just finding it all incredible.

What was the creative process like behind the scenes? Any memorable moments you can share from the shoot?

The creative process was so fun! Jim is an absolute legend, and I loved hearing his stories. He's such a brilliant artist, and I'm such a fan of his work, so I was so excited to work with him. He really invited us into the world, and he very much wanted us to feel like he was truly taking candid photos on holiday. I just loved hearing his vision and how he works with his subjects to make the art that he makes.

Your style has evolved over the years, from red carpet looks to street style. How has your personal style changed over time?

I've always loved fashion. I've watched every fashion documentary you could possibly watch. I love the history of designers and the houses, how much fashion changes how you feel and how you navigate the world, [and] what it says about the world that we're in.

Can you share how you work with your stylist, Dani Michelle?

I've so loved working with Dani. She has such a talent for seeing what you feel most confident in and finding your own personal style from there. We really collaborated to find that for me. She's amazing. I've loved every minute of working with her. I feel very lucky. I think she's one of the best in the game.

If you could pack one piece from Gucci Lido in your suitcase for a summer trip, which item would you take with you?

If I could pack one piece from the Gucci Lido collection in my suitcase, it would be the suede loafers. I think they're so cool, and they would look really cute with jeans or shorts or a dress. I just think they're a must-have shoe!

As we begin to think about spring, I've started looking for clues as to what the next It shoe may be.

After the popularity of Alaïa's mesh flats took me by surprise last year, I've been keeping a close eye for hints earlier than usual about which designer shoes might dominate next season, and I think I've cracked it. Quickly amassing some buzz, Gucci's Horsebit Ballet Flats (£780) have all the hallmarks of becoming the season's favourite shoe. How can I tell? Well, Alexa Chung has just given them her stamp of approval, and typically, that's an excellent indicator.

Selecting a style in smooth black leather with unmissable three-strap detailing, Chung wore her Gucci ballet flats in her typically chic and seemingly effortless manner—with dark-wash jeans, burgundy socks and a cosy black knit.

Beyond having Chung's backing, I've also spotted actor Daisy Edgar-Jones wearing the exact same shoes in recent weeks. Featuring a flat sole (which we've all come to rely on) and a square-toe design, Gucci's signature Horsebit detail sits on the toe of the shoe, nodding to the brand's heritage and instilling a classic energy. The straps, however, make them feel all the more 2025.

Debuting in Gucci's Cruise 2025 collection, led by creative director Sabato De Sarno, the new-season flats are an evolution of the Horsebit loafers the brand has become known for, reflecting the continued growth of and demand for the ballet-flats trend. Although Chung and Edgar-Jones had early access to the shoes, Gucci's covetable ballet flats are finally available to shop as of this week. I don't think it'll be long before many of my favourite influencers have added them to their wardrobes.

Style Notes: Mock croc fabrications always look expensive, owning to the fact that when the real thing was used more frequently in fashion, it was just that—very expensive to buy. Now, however, there are so many sleek-looking faux iterations of the material that haven't lost their elegant connotations. Style Notes: Right now we're seeing more demand for tote bags than ever before, but there is a nuance to this sudden popularity. While leather styles will always be in, it's suede totes that have won fashion people over. Style Notes: It might not be the most practical bag on the list but, in terms of looking elegant and refined, a clutch bag will always serve you well. Last night, Gucci held its Cruise 2025 runway show in London, and what a night it was! The collection is the second time the brand's Creative Director Sabato De Sarno showcased his new vision for the Italian heritage brand, and it was rife with refined looks. Witnessing the collection's debut, De Sarno's front-row guests were already decked out in pieces from the collection, and amongst them was a quiet but distinctive cult bag in the making.

Gucci is of course well acquainted with what it takes to craft an iconic item, and the Blondie bag already has all the hallmarks of a new-season cult buy. Spotted in Gucci's Cruise 2025 runway collection, the Gucci Blondie in leather and toile draws inspiration from Italy in the early '70s. Designed to drape from the shoulder, the logo-embellished design emulates techniques used throughout Gucci's jewellery collection.

Styled for the occasion by actor Daisy Edgar-Jones, the new design is already asserting itself as a London-girl favourite. Selecting the pouch in Gucci's iconic Ancora red shade, Edgar-Jones paired the ruby bag with a brown leather outfit, demonstrating its wearability.

Across the runway, the bag was styled with delicate lace, rich leather and floral motifs, transcending a singular trend and speaking to its versatility.

Last September, when Gucci's new creative director Sabato De Sarno debuted his inaugural collection for the fashion house, he introduced us to a fresh term from the Gucci dictionary: Gucci Ancora. Marking the beginning of his time at the helm—and a step away from the "maximalist era" that emerged over the course of Alessandro Michele's tenure—De Sarno launched the Gucci Ancora campaign with a namesake S/S 24 runway show in Milan.

Between the chatter around De Sarno's arrival and the social media buzz surrounding the term, you might not have picked up exactly what it means. Rest assured you're not alone—the term "What is Gucci Ancora?" is currently being searched for on Google. So, what is Gucci Ancora and what does it mean for the heritage brand?

WHAT IS GUCCI ANCORA?

It's helpful to first understand the meaning of the Italian word Ancora. Gucci translates the term to mean "Also now, also then", using it as a metaphor for where it currently finds itself in its journey: proud of its past and excited for what the future holds. The fashion house has splashed the term everywhere. Spotted in its signature burgundy shade on billboards, at popups and of course, all over social media, the Gucci Ancora campaign and collection were carefully crafted to spark conversation.

As well as Gucci's S/S 24 runway show, the Gucci Ancora campaign has also involved an activation that brought together the minds of De Sarno and creative consultant Michela Pelizzari. Creating a capsule collection of five homeware items that celebrate the golden age of Italian craftspersonship, the duo launched the Gucci Design Ancora pop-up at its flagship store in Milan from 15–21 April.

WHAT DOES THE GUCCI ANCORA CAMPAIGN MEAN FOR GUCCI?

Gucci Ancora marks a decided change in direction for the brand. Steering its current image towards a Tom-Ford-era Gucci, the brand aims to have shoppers "fall in love with Gucci again," explained De Sarno in an interview with Vogue Business. Reviving forgotten designs whilst paying homage to some of its most iconic pieces, De Sarno's time in the driver's seat will see the fashion house hark back to its heritage roots. That's Gucci Ancora.

If you're a regular around these parts you'll know that I'm vehemently championing the wardrobes of French women. French style has become aspirational for its anti-trend element and when studying the nuances of French women's style, I've observed the timelessness when it comes to footwear. Like their apparel, there's an unwavering element to certain styles, which although may come in and out of fashion, are staples in a French women's arsenal. Take the Mary Jane flat. Its revival heavily inspired in 2023, however, the crossover strap iteration has been celebrated across France and championed for its feminine elements for decades.

The same sentiment applies to ballet flats. Miu Miu undeniably spearheaded the reimagined satin iteration, but ballet flats are known as the epitome of French style and are routinely paired with rigid denim for a dreamy juxtaposition. French women's shoe preferences are ever so subtle but there's a common theme — prioritising comfort and with a feminine lilt, by way of streamlined silhouettes. Aside from boots worn during the colder seasons, footwear airs on the side of flat. Most commonly worn heels are itty bitty with women preferring to wear minuscule kitten heels, gloved pumps with block heels or flat-surfaced espadrilles.

As we transition from winter to spring, you'll notice a slew of slingback and slip-on mules, ballet flats and loafers and continuing into the warmer months, you'll witness the integration of slip-on sandals, trainers (namely Adidas or Veja) and easy-to-wear thong sandals. It's like clockwork, but it's a recipe for success. 1. Pointed Mules

Style Notes: You'll be hard-pressed not to find a pair of mules in a French woman's wardrobe and I've been heavily leaning into this style since moving here. It bridges the gap between formal and dressy casual and it can easily be integrated into a transitional wardrobe. The most celebrated styles are pointed with a slight heel.

2. Mary-Janes

Style Notes: We saw the resurgence of Mary-Janes seasons back but it's safe to say it's a forever staple for French women. What's current, however, is the adoption of micro trends onto classic silhouettes. For this reason, you'll see them donning mesh detailing, unique straps or fabric styles and I'm certain they'll be worn for years to come.

3. Ballet Flats

Style Notes: Contrary to popular belief, French women don't wear ballet flats all too often, as they prefer to wear trend-forward interpretations such as Mary Jane's or slightly elevated espadrilles. Having said that, they'll own at least one pair to wear when the occasion calls. I've seen many of my favourite French Saartorialists don Chanel's iconic ballet flats. It has a wonderful silhouette that's proven hard to replicate but if it's not in keeping with your budget, I've found some notable and equally chic contenders.

4. The Micro Heel

Style Notes: You may notice that French women like to prop an outfit up with a little heel. No bigger than a couple of inches but with a statement effect, you'll see them styled with everything from straight-leg jeans to dresses. This category feels a little miscellaneous but all mini heels create a similar effect.

5. Loafers

Style Notes: Although most French women's footwear bears a feminine silhouette, they're often spotted wearing loafers, particularly during the transitional months. Hardwearing, practical, yet chic, they've become the bedrock of a footwear capsule. Rigid denim (namely Levis 501s), a pale trench coat and a supple white t-shirt complete the uniform.

Stepping out in New York last night, 

Dakota Johnson carried a relaxed handbag style that, the more I looked at it, I was sure I had seen before. Opting for a large black bag in a quilted leather fabric from Gucci, Johnson styled her oversized tote with a longline structured coat and light-wash jeans. Adding a practical element to her casual look, Johnson's quilted bag was large enough to stow away her essentials but neat enough to retain a polished edge.

Whilst her Gucci bag offers heritage design in a new-season silhouette, the cool £2780 price tag firmly cements it as a luxury buy. And rightly so—Gucci bags have proven themselves to have eternal appeal (the Jackie alone is evidence of this), and if you do decide to invest in the real thing, I know you'll have it in your wardrobe for a very, very long time.

Sadly, my current budget doesn't stretch that far, which is why I'm considering one of the styles I had previously spotted on the high street. 

I've seen so many high-street brands embark upon creating their own slouchy totes lately, but it's COS' quilted styles that stick out in my mind. The brand's Ripple Crossbody (£65) is a current favourite amongst Londoners, but its sleeker leather styles are a near-perfect match for Johnson's new favourite. Complementing a casual outfit and adding a laid-back edge to more structured silhouettes, the buzzy handbag trend is set to enjoy more popularity in 2024.

"She's '90s and 2000s Calvin Klein archive, Dolce & Gabbana, and Ralph Lauren," 22-year-old Paris-based fashion student Asia Bieuville says in a TikTok. "She's the office siren." As her video goes on, a picture of this hypothetical woman and her immediately recognisable but formerly nameless aesthetic begins to form. "She wears bold lips and bold nails, chunky jewellery that makes a statement, but simple outfits," Bieuville continues, name-dropping Bayonetta glasses, thigh-high socks, and Elsa Peretti jewellery. "She's everything we aspire to be this year," she says. And she's not wrong. Looking at the green-screened collage behind her—which features Bella Hadid in a black pencil skirt set from Tom Ford's S/S 98 collection for Gucci; Gisele Bündchen walking the runway in a turtleneck sweater, croc-print skirt, and stiletto knee-highs at Ralph Lauren's A/W 00 show; and Chanel's beloved and forever-sold-out Oiseau de Nuit nail colour—it's clear that the office-siren look is exactly the one every brand and fashion girl is striving to achieve in 2024.

"I began to see the influences of this trend in the F/W 22 shows, where we were starting to move away from 'fuzziness' and back towards something more structured," she explains over email. After spotting video after video surrounding back-to-office shopping and dressing on her TikTok feed at the start of the season, similar to the way we were once inundated with back-to-school fashion content, the trend and its now-viral name sort of just clicked in her head. "I think it's the natural evolution of a generation that has gone from [one to the other]," she says, from school to work. According to Bieuville, the trend is all about challenging feminine energy in the office, a space that's so often male-dominated. "We've often been told that women have to adapt to masculine codes to be respected and admired in the corporate world, but I think there's another, more sensual and stylish way," she explains. "The woman who represents this has ambition, likes to assume her sensuality and femininity, and doesn't care about judgment. She proves herself through her actions. She's Samantha Jones in Sex and the City: feminine, sexy, and successful." 

Though the office siren's closet is made up of primarily vintage pieces and archival runway looks by the aforementioned designers and more, Bieuville says that today's creative directors who are adopting this trend right and left and thus adapting it for the modern woman are just as qualified to fill up her wardrobe. "Miu Miu's F/W 23 collection is what lit the office-siren flame in me," she says of the librarian-chic offering designed by Miuccia Prada that debuted in February. "More recently, Gucci's Ancora collection and Peter Hawkings' debut collection for Tom Ford fit perfectly with what I imagine this woman wearing." For her, there's a clear through line from these two recent collections to Tom Ford's original designs for Gucci from the '90s and 2000s, which act as a strong foundation for this trend. But let's be clear: This aesthetic is present in plenty more collections from the past few seasons, including Ferragamo's most recent offerings by Creative Director Maximilian Davis and Anthony Vaccarello's for Saint Laurent. 

As many dos as the office-siren look has—Bone Cuffs, slinky blouses, pencil skirts, stilettos, and cherry red—it likewise has its don'ts, Bieuville shares. One common misconception when it comes to the trend is that it's vulgar, especially for an office setting. "A big 'don't' for me would be to be inappropriately dressed," she says. "The corporate side is still very much present, but [the office siren] lifts it all up with a play on materials, and in the end it's quite a subtle balance." Putting an emphasis on the word subtle, she says that ending up in anything leopard print with patent-leather stilettos is a sign you've gone way too far. "The aim is not to be noticed only for your looks, but to shine with all your qualities." Really, it's more about the woman than her closet. Though, when someone has themself fully figured out, they usually also have a good grasp on their personal style. And the office siren is 100% the type to know exactly who she is and what she wants—from her job, from her style, from her life as a whole.
